15. EnEx-RANGE - Robust autonomous Acoustic Navigation in Glacial icE.

Abstract

Within the Enceladus Explorer Initiative of the DLR Space Administration navigation technologies for a future space mission are in development. Those technologies are the basis for the search for extraterrestrial life on the Saturn moon Enceladus. An autonomous melting probe, the EnEx probe, aims to extract a liquid sample from a water reservoir below the icy crust. A first EnEx probe was developed and demonstrated in a terrestrial scenario at the Bloodfalls, Taylor Glacier, Antarctica in November 2014. To enable navigation in glacier ice two acoustic systems were integrated into the probe in addition to conventional navigation technologies. The first acoustic system determines the position of the probe during the run based on propagation times of acoustic signals from emitters at reference positions at the glacier surface to receivers in the probe. The second system provides information about the forefield of the probe. It is based on sonographic principles with phased array technology integrated in the probe's melting head. Information about obstacles or sampling regions in the probe's forefield can be acquired. The development of both systems is now continued in the project EnEx-RANGE. The emitters of the localization system are replaced by a network of intelligent acoustic enabled melting probes. These localize each other by means of acoustic signals and create the reference system for the EnEx probe. Abstract

In this paper we discuss the characteristics and difficulties of the production ramp-up processes in general and the resulting challenges for logistics during ramp-up. Ramp-up as a non-linear, socio-technical system presents companies with great challenges with regard to ensuring a satisfactory product quality and quantity. One of the main obstacles of the ramp-up environment is the robustness against informational deficits such as missing availability of data, fast state changes and information uncertainties. Internal turbulences on the shop floor level and a changing target system present the ramp-up system with further challenges. In this context, we discuss the characteristics and difficulties of ramp-up processes in general and the resulting challenges for ramp-up logistics, especially with respect to autonomous logistics by means of mobile transportation robots. To overcome the problem of missing models and simulations for ramp-up management we propose the RoboCup Logistics League as a test bench for new approaches for ramp-up logistics. We therefore map the identified characteristics of ramp-up processes to the RoboCup Logistics League and show the suitability of the game based approach for serious research on ramp-up management. The Robocup Logistics League has an automated referee and an overhead tracking systems. These systems allow for logging of events together with transportation routes and robot positions. With this information the behavior of the logistic system can be analyzed and automated benchmark procedures for logistics tasks can be established. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
