Abstract

This work focus on the electromagnetic decay properties of the heaviest known mirror pair 67As and 67Se, produced in the fusion evaporation reaction 32S+40Ca, with a E = 90 MeV beam provided by the ATLAS accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory. The high selectivity required to investigate these proton-rich nuclei was achieved with the concurrent employment of Gammasphere, Neutron-Shell, and Microball. The full array allowed to obtain the level scheme of the 67Se nucleus up to 5.56 MeV, and 5 new transitions were assigned to the known 67As level-scheme. The level spin and parities were assigned using the ADO analysis and symmetry arguments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In a recent experiment at Argonne National Laboratory, new spectroscopic information was obtained for the mirror pair 67As and 67Se via the measurement of the lifetime of analogue 9/2I+ excited states. The nuclei of interest were populated via the fusion evaporation reaction of 32S on 40Ca, and selected by the combination of Gammasphere, Microball and the Neutron Wall arrays. The mirror B(E1) strengths were measured via the centroid shift method in analogue E1 transitions in 67As and 67Se. These findings are significant in determining the extent of conservation of isospin symmetry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A new decay mode, the so called prompt proton decay, was discovered in 1998. It has since proven to be an important decay mechanism for several neutron deficient nuclei in the A∼60 region. To measure with high accuracy the energies and angular distributions of these protons, a state-of-the-art charged particle detector—LuWuSiA—was developed. It was first utilized during a fusion-evaporation reaction experiment performed at Argonne National Laboratory, U.S.A. In this contribution, the characteristics of the prompt proton decay are discussed along with the special features of LuWuSiA as well as a revisit to the prompt proton decay in 58Cu. Abstract

The yrast superdeformed (SD) band in 84Zr has been linked to states of normal deformation (ND) by three single-step γ decays. The spins and parity of the SD band were determined through angular distributions of two of these links. The properties of this band and its decay to ND states are compared with linked SD bands in other mass regions. SD intensity profiles, calculated SD-ND potential barriers, and results of a statistical-decay analysis suggest there is significant SD-ND mixing involved. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Multiple superdeformed bands in the nuclei [sup 80-83]Sr, [sup 82-84]Y, and [sup 83,84]Zr have been studied in a backed-target experiment using the Gammasphere and Microball detector arrays. For 15 bands in these nuclei, average transition quadrupole moments (Q[sub t]) have been measured accurately. Among those are two pairs of "isospectral" bands and the Q[sub t] values obtained in each case are nearly identical. The measured Q[sub t] values and dynamical moments of inertia place stringent conditions on configuration assignments for the bands obtained from mean field calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
