The article is devoted to T.P. Znamerovskaya, a Russian art researcher, and her contribution to the development of Russian and world art research. It is impossible for any researcher, at least in Russia, to do without T.P. Znamerovskaya's works when studying Spanish painting. At the same time, T.P. Znamerovskaya's heritage has not been examined properly as far as its contribution to the Russian studies of Spanish art is concerned. Nowadays, with the tendency to refuse from the research methods of the Soviet period, there is a risk of "throwing out the baby with the bathwater". It is essential for the development of Russian art research to fully realize the positive contribution by the researchers of the previous decades. A.V. Morozova compares T.P. Znamerovskaya's results with the information and concepts of her Russian and foreign predecessors and contemporaries. The author stresses the importance of T.P. Znamerovskaya's studies for the popularization of Spanish painting in Russia and, in particular, for the discovery of the multifaceted work and life of Ribera and Velazquez. T.P. Znamerovskaya analyzed their art in the cultural and historical context of their epoch and showed the evolution of their imagery and style. T.P. Znamerovskaya created her own poetically represented and at the same time objective portrait of the greatest Spanish masters of the 17
th century, this fact should be considered in Spanish art studies. Although the Soviet epoch preconditioned T.P. Znamerovskaya's research in many respects, she never sinned against the research objectiveness. T.P. Znamerovskaya really discovered Ribera's art for the Russian reader, with all its diverse and controversial aspects. She certainly created a bright, unrivalled and genuine portrait of Velazquez, whose art took a great deal of her time, effort and love. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
