Abstract

The article focuses on a study which examined the tidal currents in Obatake Seto in the Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan from the viewpoint of tidal energy generation. An overview of the geography of Obatake Seto is presented. The possibility of generating tidal energy in the area is noted. An extremely uneven flow in the area was revealed by the simulated results of tidal currents.

Abstract

The article presents a study which investigated the numerical navigation for a ship running in coastal waters in simulation of winds, tidal currents and waves. It is stated that tidal currents and winds over the sea affected the maneuverability of a ship as shown by a numerical simulation and on-board experiments. The hydrodynamic forces caused by the wind and current are described.

Abstract

The article discusses a study which evaluated the safety of ferry berthing under strong tidal currents. It presents as case study the existing situation in Japanese ports, wherein meteorological and oceanographic parameters have been studied to assess the characteristics of seawater and tidal currents through the use of numerical simulation models. The impact of tidal currents is a major factor that should be considered in port planning.
