1. Bridging physics and machine learning in material design and optimisation?

Abstract

Lightweight materials have become integral in diverse sectors such as transportation, energy, and healthcare. Their varied microstructures and properties present significant potential for applications from load-bearing components to multifunctional structures. However, a major challenge lies in the heterogeneous material properties and vast design space of materials, impeding effective design and optimisation. My talk will address this challenge in two parts. Firstly, I will explore mechanics-based approaches to model the failure of materials. This will encompass a wide range of scenarios, from fracture, crushing behaviour, ballistic impact to liquid-solid impact of materials. Secondly, I will showcase the application of machine learning approaches for the design of porous architected materials, focusing on optimisation strategies. By bridging mechanics and machine learning, our work aims to unlock new possibilities in material design and optimisation.

2. AI Transparency as the magic pill?

Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) gains prominence, managing its associated risks and challenges will become increasingly paramount. This presentation explores the value of AI transparency as the “magic pill” in inspiring more ethical, responsible and trustworthy AI systems. Using two case studies located in the public sector and popular chatbots, the presentation endeavours to provide a nuanced perspective on the role of transparency as it applies to diverse contexts. Additionally, the presentation considers the limitations of the transparency ideal, aiming to stimulate new perspectives and discussions on how transparency can be more effectively conceptualized and operationalized.

22. Chinese International Student Experiences in United States Higher Education during Pandemic: Preparing for a Post-Pandemic Era

Abstract

Internationalization has become a substantial part of higher education worldwide, especially in the U.S. Moreover, Chinese students make up the largest portion of the U.S.'s international higher education students. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a disruption in higher education, especially posing considerable challenges to international students. Given the emphasis of international higher education in the U.S. and the prominence of Chinese international students in this country, as well as the sparsity of research outside large cities, this study sought to examine particular challenges posed to Chinese international students studying at universities in smaller cities in the U.S. Results indicate that this group of students experienced a myriad of hardships and challenges during the pandemic. Understanding these effects can inform international higher education programs perhaps worldwide, ultimately improving such programs to better manage crises, but also to improve normal practice.
