Abstract

We cover here the present state-of-the-art in constraining the nuclear equation-of-state (EoS) and the symmetry energy using heavy-ion collisions (HIC), from sub- to supra-saturation densities, from Fermi to (ultra-) relativistic beam energies. We also discuss how HIC constraints on the EoS contribute to the knowledge of thermodynamical properties of neutron star matter. Necessary improvements and challenges are outlined, in particular in the perspective, for HICs, of staying competitive with future astrophysical multimessenger observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The so-called Hoyle state in 12C (7.654 MeV, 0+) is an excited state of 12C characterized by a well-pronounced 3α cluster nature. Many possible cluster configurations, such as a linear-chain arrangement of 3α particles, bentarm, triangular or gas-like structures were theoretically conjectured within the previous decades, but, also due to the existence of ambiguities in experimental data, it is still impossible to draw a firm conclusion. Its direct α-decay partial width is accurately predicted by models but requires better experimental constraints. We performed a high-precision and high-selectivity investigation of its α-decay by using the 14N(d,α2)12C∗ reaction at 10.5 MeV incident energy with the aim of distinguishing between sequential and direct decay patterns. We are able to significantly improve the state of the art upper limit for direct 3α decays by placing the new limit at 0.043%. Such a low limit allows to give fundamental constraints to theoretical models attempting to describe the structure of the Hoyle state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

he Hoyle state in 12C(Ex = 7.654MeV) is characterized by a pronounced 3α cluster configuration. It is involved in the so-called 3α process in stars, that is responsible of 12C nucleosynthesis. We studied the decay path of the Hoyle state by using the 14N(d, α2)12C(7.654) reaction at 10.5MeV incident energy. We found, with a precision higher of a factor 5 than any other previous experiment, an almost total absence of direct decays by-passing the ground state of 8Be. A new upper limit of such a decay width is placed at 0.043% (95% C.L.). Astrophysical 3α process reaction rate calculations have to be consequently revised. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Correlations between two or more particles can be used as a tool to explore the space-time features of nuclear reactions as well as spectroscopic properties of produced unbound clusters. In order to have new options to study the mentioned correlations, FARCOS (Femtoscope ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) has been conceived as a compact high resolution array, composed of square telescopes. Dynamical breakup of projectile-like fragments (PLF) following dissipative reactions of 48Ca projectiles with 112Sn and 124Sn is shown to exhibit "isoscaling" regularities that can be understood in terms of phase space governed by ground state masses. Abstract

Investigations performed by the ALADiN Collaboration about signals for a liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter are reported. Temperature-excitation energy correlation measurements on several systems at different incident energies are compared. Moreover the comparison between isotope and excited states temperatures, extracted from double ratios of isotope yields and population ratios of fragment unbound states, respectively, shows a discrepancy between the two methods that cannot be accounted for by the sequential feeding corrections. Instead, they seem to be related to the space-time evolution of the fragmentation process. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
