The submerged coastal heritage forms an important aspect of our cultural and archaeological patrimony and offers huge possibilities for scientific and (inter-) cultural purposes. Since the knowledge of this heritage is limited, gathering more data is one of the main objectives of the multidisciplinary project SeArch (Archaeological heritage in the North Sea, www.sea-arch.be). Additionally, these data will be used as a basis for a sustainable management by government agencies. To share, integrate and visualize the gathered archaeological and environmental data and information in a user-friendly way, an interactive web-based Geographical Information System/Service is created. By implementing this webGIS, the benefits of standard map reading (such as providing insight) are combined with facilities such as easy accessible spatial analysis and feature querying in an interactive environment, which is accessible worldwide. To create an interactive webGIS-platform, a good structured spatial database is needed. This paper provides more information about the configuration of the spatial database and the application of the software package GeoServer. The development of a fully functional spatial data infrastructure (SDI) using the most novel, reliable and powerful technological components is described. The objective of this SDI is to increase the accessibility and interoperability of spatial data for a wide range of users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Implementation of the INSPIRE Directive in Europe increase the amount of web services that provide spatial data. Development of public awareness and the availability of geoinformation allow wider application of WebGIS technology in the public administration tasks. In the article the authors tried to identify innovative solutions how to enabling optimization of civil servants work, in particular: collection of geodata, verifying the quality of cartographic sources, analysis and inference in the scope of geoinformation. Implementation of the INSPIRE directive, and the subsequent transposition of its provisions on national law of the Member States undoubtedly marks the progress in the use of GIS technology in public administration. Most important thing that effects on debated issue is concept of interoperability, which allows for the use of diffuse sources of spatial data while preserving their spatial continuity. It should also be noted that there is the significant increase in the number of thematic geoportals, enabling work with geoinformation without the need of using specialized GIS applications. Furthermore, the development activities of the INSPIRE directive resulted in the improvement of the quality of spatial data both in terms of thematic groups contained in the directive, but also the spatial data not covered by it. The paper presents examples of practical applications of WebGIS and indicates direction of support activities for the local administration in relation to the work with geodata. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The management of the emergencies requires an immediate availability of information and data from the field, like those acquired from monitoring and alerting sensors or, after a disastrous event, the information of the reconnaissance of damage. For this purpose, an integrated DBMS-GIS system has been developed, using exclusively free and open source software, to dynamically create and populate via Web a spatial database. In particular, assuming that more teams draw up an inventory of the damage, we highlight the benefits of a real-time transmission of the information collected from the field to headquarters. The approach has been successfully tested in the management of the navigation of an autonomous robot, assigning the optimal path and mapping its trajectories and all data acquired. - Abstract
With the prevalence of data-intensive geospatial applications, massive spatio-temporal sensor data are obtained and the big data have posed grand challenges on existing index methods based on spatial databases due to their intrinsic poor scalability and retrieval efficiency. Motivated by the deficiencies, in this paper, we propose a distributed composite spatio-temporal index scheme called VegaIndexer for efficiently answering queries from large collections of space-time sensor data. Firstly, we present a distributed spatio-temporal indexing architecture based on cloud platform which consists of global index and local index. Moreover, we propose Multi-version Distributed enhanced R+ (MDR+) tree algorithm for accelerating data retrieval and spatio-temporal query efficiency. Furthermore, we design a MapReduce-based parallel processing approach of batch constructing indices for big spatiotemporal sensor data. In addition, we implement VegaIndexer middleware on top of the leading cloud platform, i.e., Hadoop and associated NoSQL database. The experimental experiments show that VegaIndexer outperforms the index methods of typical spatial databases. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
With the rapid growth of geospatial data and concurrent users, the state-of-the-art WebGIS cannot support massive data storage and processing due to poor scalability of underlying centralized systems (e.g., native file systems and SDBMS). In this paper, we propose a novel distributed geospatial data storage and processing framework for large-scale WebGIS. Our proposal contains three significant characteristics. Firstly, a scalable cloud-based architecture is designed to provide elastic storage and computation resources of shared-nothing commodity cluster for WebGIS. Secondly, we present efficient geospatial data placement and geospatial data access refinement schemes to improve I/O efficiency. Thirdly, we propose MapReduce based localized geospatial computing model for parallel processing of massive geospatial data, which improves geospatial computation performance. We have implemented a prototype named VegaCI on top of the emerging Hadoop cloud platform. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our proposal is efficient and applicable in practical large-scale WebGIS. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

- Abstract
This paper illustrates the design ideas of log management system based on WebGIS and implementation methods. Bringing WebGIS technology into the field of log management, giving full play to capabilities of WebGIS graphical information dissemination and retrieval, and achieving real-time monitoring data display and analysis, will greatly enhance the intuitive and convenient level of log management system. But due to achievement mechanism of WebGIS system, as well as external network constraints, the current application system based on WebGIS cannot achieve true on-line monitoring. Introducing RIA technology into the log management system and taking Suzhou Industrial Park geographic information sharing platform for example, we build out a comprehensive and efficient log data management system to achieve spatial information which is relating to users' access visualization. The system can monitor network traffic online efficiently and easily, count and analyze log data, provide a scientific decision-making basis for operation and maintenance of geographic information sharing platform. - Abstract
A kind of solution for WebGIS based on distributed Browser/Server architecture has been proposed, which was implemented by using IIS to manage MapObjects application. Internet Information Services managed server side and was embedded with MapObjects2.3 to provide GIS functions. Users can enjoy WebGIS services by using general browser. Now WebGIS solution is optimized based on popular three-tier, which consists of presentation layer, business logic layer and data access layer, besides, spatial database engine (ArcSDE) middleware technology is used to manage a variety of spatial data and attribute data which are stored in the relational database SQL Server 2005. The solution is easier to maintain because of low coupling between layers and high cohesion within layers. As a validation for feasibility and high efficiency, a web version of campus digital map was implemented by using the solution as the frame. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
