Migration studies in developing country setting have found that most migrants are seasonal works, rather than permanent migrants. In China, with the rigid household registration system that limits individuals' permanent change of residence, temporary migration is particularly prevalent as compared with permanent migration. However, with the massive wave of migration surging since the early 1980s, hardly any studies have systemtically differenciated the two types of migration, examined how determinants of migration differ for temporary versus permanent migration, and analyzed if the temporary migration would eventually become permanent. Also, while economic and job opportunities are much emphasized as the most important factors motivating migration, the influence of family demography is often ignored. Particularly in China, little is known about how migration interacts with the household structure change undergoing simultaneously, and how such interactions differ between temporary versus permanent migrations. Using the longitudinal CHNS data, we attempt at a preliminary analysis of the above questions. Applying discrete-time event history model, we find that previous migration experience and family demography significantly affect individual's temporary as well as permanent migration status, with individuals having previous migration experience being more likely to leave the household either temporarily or permanently.
