In this paper we successfully demonstrate the reach improvement of spectrum-sliced dense wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (SS-DWDM PON) where amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source is used as a seed light. Investigated optical system is built on the ITU-T DWDM frequency grid, defined in recommendation G.694.1 and therefore it is potentially much more compatible with other already existing WDM PON optical systems. In this way it is possible to replace the classic WDM PON system with our proposed extended-reach spectrum-sliced WDM PON system and reduce complexity of network architecture as well as cost per one user. The maximum reach of the spectrum-sliced dense wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (SS-DWDM PON) system with data transmission speed 2.5 Gbit/s can be fairly limited by chromatic dispersion (CD) because of large optical bandwidth per channel compared to the bit rate. And therefore, dispersion degrades the performance of a SS-DWDM PON system more than it is observed in conventional laser-based system. This paper contains the investigation of high speed 8-channel spectrum-sliced DWDM PON system with efficient CD compensation methods like dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG). It is shown that CD compensation has an important role for guaranteed downstream optical link performance and maximum transmission line length of high speed SS-DWDM PON system. Results show that FBG used for CD compensation in high speed spectrum-sliced dense WDM PON systems provide better accumulated CD compensation and increase optical link length up to 150% while DCF fiber provides up to 130% reach improvement. In this work comparative study is carried for high speed duo binary transmitter with different dispersion compensation schemes for long haul optical communication. These techniques are applied to duo binary system, which operates at bit rates of 10, 15 and 20, 25,30Gbps bit rates. The dispersion compensation schemes tested are Pre-compensation & Post-compensation, symmetrical configuration1&symmetrical configuration 2, optical phase conjugation, FBG compensation, double hybrid fiber& dispersion fiber managed for long haul optical communication. Eye opening is better at 10Gbps bit rate optical transmission with all dispersion compensation techniques tested. It is found that for higher bit rates dispersion managed fiber and next one FBG compensation shows better performance metrics like eye opening bit error rate and factor Q as compared to other dispersion compensation schemes. It is also observed that for low input laser power transmission performance metrics are much better for all dispersion schemes and at higher laser input power transmission performance metrics are degraded. A dispersion compensating fiber having average dispersion profile of −259 ps/nm-km with dispersion variation of about 4.58 ps/nm-km has been obtained over the wavelength range 1.35 µm to 1.675 µm using an equiangular spiral photonic crystal fiber (ES-PCF). The proposed fiber also exhibits single polarization behavior with one of its fundamental modes (x or y polarized) completely suppressed. To obtain these properties, liquid crystal (LC) is infiltrated in the defected core of ES-PCF. These unique features of the proposed fiber can be used in wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) optical fiber transmission system for residual chromatic dispersion compensation and also for maintaining single polarization.
