Gamma irradiation is a potential phytosanitary treatment to control the mealybug Planococcus lilacinus. P. lilacinus is a polyphagous mealybug that attacks fruits with high economic value and becomes a quarantine pest that hinders fruit exports to foreign countries. Efficacy test was carried out on P lilacinus 1st instar nymphs and adults. The radiation doses used were 0, 50, 75, 100, 150 and 300 Gy for 1st instar nymphs and 0, 400, 800, 1,200, 1,600 and 2,000 Gy for adults. Observations were made on the mortality of mealybugs every day. In addition to mortality, the sterility of adults and eggs was also observed. The lethal dose was analyzed by probit and expressed in terms of LD50, LD95 and LD99. The results showed that 1st instar nymphs were more susceptible, and adult mealybugs were most susceptible to irradiation. The adult LD99 is 3,032.9 Gy. There is a growing body of evidence that exposure to transportation noise can increase the risk for ischemic heart disease (IHD). However, there are significant variations in the pooled exposure-response relationships (ERRs) derived by recent meta-analyses which lead to uncertainties in health impact assessments and public health policy decision-making. We aimed to update recent meta-analyses investigating the effects of road, railway, and aircraft transportation noise exposure on IHD mortality and morbidity. We included relevant studies from two meta-analyses and one literature review covering the years 1994-2020. We conducted a systematic literature review using the WHO search strategy to identify new studies published until February 2022 and assessed risk of bias for each retained study. The pooled exposure-response associations were calculated using a random effects model. We identified nine new studies for IHD incidence and mortality. Across all traffic sources, statistically significant risk estimates were observed for IHD incidence (1.02 [1.00, 1.03]) and mortality (1.02 [1.00, 1.03]) per 10dB Lden respectively. Human-caused climate change is linked to changes in some types of climate extremes such as high- and low-temperature extremes. Extreme temperature poses risks to several sectors of society and, more importantly, on human health. In Europe, the population affected by high temperatures is expected to increase as opposed to the number of people exposed to cold weather. Nevertheless, cold-related mortality is an important public health problem across Europe, and in southern (warmer) areas, the impact of low temperatures is higher. In this study, we analyzed mortality data from three Greek regions and investigated potential effects of the January 2017 cold spell on mortality attributed to cardiovascular disease. This work explores the impact of thermal stress on natural-cause mortality in the nine Office of National Statistics regions of England using the thermal index Apparent Temperature as the exposure indicator. A standard time-series Poisson regression analysis for over-dispersed data was used, along with distributed lag non-linear models, setting a lag period of 21 days to account for the delayed effects of temperature. Regional differences in the exposure-response relationships were revealed. On the whole, the results demonstrated that the population in England is more vulnerable to cold effects and highlighted the dominant health impact of moderately low temperatures. High temperatures during the summer months are a common feature in countries with a Mediterranean climate, such as Cyprus and Greece. However, anthropogenic climate change is responsible for the increase in the frequency, intensity and duration of extreme high temperatures in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region, especially since 1990. At the same time, future climate projections show that high temperatures and heatwaves that were observed at the beginning of the 21st century and characterized as extreme will become the norm in the coming years. This study confirms the increasing trend in maximum and minimum temperature for the last four decades in Cyprus. Bioclimatic indices provide a measure of human thermal discomfort caused by the thermal environment. In the present study, the UTCI index from the dataset ERA5-HEAT was used to estimate the heat stress of the average person under conditions of heat events. The spatial distribution of maximum monthly UTCIdaily values was carried out for the period 2004-2019. At the same time, the correlation of patient admissions to hospitals, as well as the relationship of mortality with high UTCIdaily values, was assessed. Mortality data and data from eight public hospitals located in five districts of Cyprus were analyzed as obtained from the Ministry of Health and the Cyprus Statistical Service. Air pollution is an important environmental risk factor associated with increased morbidity and excess mortality. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a complex mixture of both organic and inorganic compounds, depending on emissions sources and atmospheric chemistry. According to toxicological studies, there is strong evidence that anthropogenic carbonaceous aerosols, especially those emitted from combustion sources, are more hazardous to human health than other types of fine particles. In this study, we use WRF-Chem to simulate PM2.5 and the carbonaceous sub-components (black carbon and organics from anthropogenic sources) over Europe. The excess mortality attributed to long-term exposure to these particles is quantified using the MR-BRT (meta-Regression-Bayesian, regularized, trimmed) and the Global Exposure Mortality Model (GEMM) exposure-response functions to assess the public health outcomes. The present study estimates the future impact of climate change on heat-related mortality in Thessaloniki, Greece. Mortality attributed to high temperatures will increase from 0.64% (95% eCI = -1.12, 2.48) to 3.32% (95% eCI: 0.52, 6.1), whereas cold-related mortality will be reduced from 0.7% (95% eCI = -2.24, 3.31) to 0.37% (95% eCI = -1.63, 2.2). Overall, the excess total mortality attributed to temperature will be increased by 2.33% in the future. Among the elderly, high temperatures will cause 5.14% of deaths, highlighting their increased vulnerability. Among the many factors affecting the average life expectancy and mortality of the population, along with the effective services of the health care system, an important place is occupied by the ecological condition of the environment, in particular, the quality of the security of its resources for human health. Providing the population with safe, clean, drinking water is one of the most important factors in the world and among them in Georgia. According to the data of the World Health Organization, almost 2 billion people around the world suffer from a shortage of safe drinking water. Today, 1 billion 200 million people around the world suffer from a lack of safe drinking water. The water consumed by modern society contains hundreds of thousands of different types of pollutants. Contaminated drinking water accelerates the aging process of the body by 30%. Under drinking water, we mean such water, the consumption of which does not cause negative changes in the health of the population. Problem urgency in Georgia has become due to increment of frequency, number infectious and carcinogenic diseases of unknown origin. Presumably one of the main reasons of population low life expectancy, infants and maternal mortality high rate, women breast cancer cases increment, pregnancy interruption etc. in country is the drinking water low quality and its disinfection by chlorine. Emergency Medical Services (EMSs) provide necessary urgent medical care and transport patients to the nearest medical center for treatment. Due the to nature of the service, response time is of utmost importance for reducing mortality and alleviating human suffering. Moreover, the availability of service at the time of the call is another planning factor that should be considered. In fatal traffic accidents, for instance, the probability of death increases dramatically as a function of response time. Therefore, locating EMS stations and allocating ambulances to emergency calls requires careful and analytical planning. In this study, we aim to determine the locations and sizes of EMS stations in Istanbul. We formulate a multi-objective integer programming model that finds optimal locations of service stations and the number of ambulances to be stationed while satisfying response time and availability constraints. Our model also addresses allocation decisions where each demand point (subdistrict) is allocated to an EMS station that will ensure predetermined service levels in terms of response time and availability. In order to determine the number of ambulances to be located at a station, historical EMS calls are analyzed. To ensure a particular level of availability, the problem is formulated as a Q-coverage problem where the total number of ambulances to be stationed at an EMS station is driven by the demand (EMS calls) of subdistricts that are covered. The objectives of the model are to minimize the total cost of opening EMS stations and to minimize the total demand weighted distance of subdistricts to EMS stations. The percentage of stroke deaths attributable to low temperature was 7.23% in 2019, accounting for 474,002 stroke deaths globally, while about 48,030 of the stroke deaths were attributed to high temperature. Joinpoint regression analysis was applied to calculate the average annual percent change (AAPC) with 95% confidence interval (CI) to evaluate stroke mortality trends in 1990–2019. Trends from global stroke mortality attributed to low temperature significantly declined (AAPC = −2.5%; 95%CI = −2.6 to −2.3) in both sexes together. A significantly increased trend for stroke mortality attributed to high temperature was observed in both sexes together (AAPC = +1.0%; 95%CI = 0.6 to 1.3). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Joinpoint regression analysis was applied to calculate the average annual percent change (AAPC), with 95% confidence interval (CI), to evaluate global ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality trends in 1990–2019. In 2019, there were disparities by sex in terms of the contribution of non-optimal temperature to global IHD mortality: for low temperature (5.99% in males and 6.19% in females, respectively) and high temperature (0.50% in males and 0.44% in females, respectively). A decreasing trend for global IHD mortality attributed to low temperature was observed in males (AAPC = −1.7%; 95% CI = −1.8 to −1.6) and females (AAPC = −2.1%; 95% CI = −2.1 to −2.0). Medical certificate cause of death (MCCD) data is an important source of information for public health monitoring, priority setting, and planning. The completeness and accuracy of data on the cause of death affect the value of the policies adopted. Poor-quality data can lead to missed opportunities to improve the health of the population. This study aims to obtain a strategy to improve the quality of data on MCCD. We used DKI Jakarta province mortality surveillance data, which was collected from health facilities. The death cases from 2016 to 2019 and the deceased who lived in the DKI Jakarta area were selected. The Analysis of National Causes of Death for Action (ANACONDA) software 5.0 was used to determine the quality of the MCCD data. Results: The number of Health Facilities sending data from 2016 to 2019 has increased. Annual percentages Garbage Code (GC) tend not to change (more than 50%). GC in categories 3, 5, and 1 tend to be stable with an annual average of 34%, 26%, and 21%. Meanwhile, Category 4 tends to increase though it is small (from 5.7 to 14.4%). Based on the potential impact that GC causes in guiding or misguiding public policy to prevent, more than 60% is identified as being in the very high-level category. This paper presents a Bayesian statistical prediction of mortality data in view of gender imbalance and early age level. The preprocessed data from standard database is accessed for Bayesian parameter link among the projected values. Data report consists of group of statements provides a detail about the combined association of estimated parameters. The Bayesian model is developed and adapted for the Gender imbalance and early age mortality from the state wise and location wise (Rural, Urban) data. Probability distribution from the prior model to posterior condition for different combination of data is performed. Finally, the mortality rate for next five years is predicted and the validated for the 95% confident level shows the predominance of the proposed analysis. It can be difficult for a practitioner to know which wild animals will survive the rehabilitation process to release and which will not. This master class uses data from The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota, one of the largest wildlife rehabilitation centers in the country, to help predict which patients will make it to release and which will not. Exotic animals commonly present to veterinary clinics on an emergency basis. Both acute and chronic diseases may manifest with a sudden onset of symptoms due to the tendency of exotic species to hide signs of illness until it is advanced. Accurate diagnosis of the underlying cause for illness is essential to provide appropriate treatment, but in many cases, diagnostic testing must be staged to avoid inadvertent mortality of these fragile patients. In this presentation, we discuss how to optimize the clinical approach to the critically ill exotic animal, and review emergency triage, medical, and surgical management of exotic mammals, reptiles, and birds. A 5-year-old Siamese female spayed rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) presented for acute onset of anorexia and tachypnea on August 19, 2021. The patient had history of thymoma diagnosed in February 2021. Upon clinical examination as well as with both radiography and ultrasonography (Fig 1) there was evidence of an enlarged thymoma as compared to the imaging done in February. There was also skin pallor (Fig 2). Ultrasonographically it appeared there was a fluid-filled thymic cyst. Hematology revealed a severe regenerative anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia and lymphocytosis and other abnormalities (Fig 3). A diagnosis of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) was based on the severe regenerative anemia, presence of spherocytes and weak positive saline agglutination test result (Table 1). Oral prednisolone at 2 mg/kg along with a gastrointestinal protectant was prescribed. Supportive care including thoracocentesis to reduce the size of the thymic cyst, blood transfusion, assist-feeding and oxygen supplementation were also provided. The patient's clinical signs improved gradually while the PCV increased from 13.7-28.7% in 3 weeks. The percentage of poikilocytosis decreased on blood film examination. The gradual reduction of the prednisolone dose started two weeks after the initial dose and was reduced 25% by every week due to the concern of the side effects of the corticosteroid. Air pollution is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality. The fact that more cities are now improving their air quality control system is good news, so when they take action to improve air quality, they set a goal accordingly. As air quality declines, the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including asthma, increases in people who live in these cities. Ambient air pollution, which contains high concentrations of fine and fine particles, poses the highest environmental health risk, causing three million premature deaths worldwide each year. At the same time, people's awareness is rising, and air quality monitoring is being carried out in more cities. As air quality improves, global prevalence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases is declining." Most sources of urban outdoor air pollution are wholly beyond the control of individuals, suggesting the need for action at the city level and by national and international policy makers to promote cleaner modes of transport, more efficient energy production and appropriate waste management. More than half of controlled cities located in high-income countries, and more than one-third of cities located in low- and middle-income countries reduced their air pollution levels by more than 5% within five years. The set of affordable and accessible policies includes measures such as reducing emissions from industrial chimneys, increasing the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, and prioritizing the development of rapid transit systems, increasing walking and developing bike path networks. Air quality in Bulgaria raises serious concerns: measurements show that citizens across the country breathe air that is assessed as harmful to health. For example, the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 is much higher than the values prescribed by the European Union and the World Health Organization (WHO) for health protection. The concentrations of PM2.5 in the urban areas of Bulgaria were the highest of all 28 EU member states as average values for a three-year period. For PM10, Bulgaria also leads among the countries with the highest pollution with an average daily concentration of 77 μg/m³ (the EU limit value is 50 μg/m³). According to the World Health Organization, 60% of the urban population of Bulgaria is exposed to dangerous (unhealthy) levels of dust particles (PM10). Air pollution in the Republic of Bulgaria is a significant and difficult to solve environmental problem related to physiographic, social, economic and anthropological factors. Bringing the air quality in the country in line with the norms and goals set in Directive 2008/50 / EC, although difficult, is achievable. Over time, hydro-meteorological disasters, also called weather and/or climate-related disasters have recorded the highest occurrence of natural disasters, not only in European Union (EU) countries, but also worldwide, causing a total of most damage and life losses. Using available updated EM-DAT international disaster database, this study aim to provide the results derived from the analysis of the weather and climate-related disaster at EU countries level. Countries and disaster type disparities in terms of frequency, distribution, mortality and economic losses are highlighted. Since the reported losses have a certain amount of uncertainty, or are missing for some events, only the relevant disasters that resulted in at least ten people death and/or 10 million US$ have been assessed in this study. The EU countries population and GDP/capita time-series data were collected from the statistical database of European Environmental Agency (EEA). Between 2000 and 2021, EM-DAT reported 225 relevant natural disasters in EU countries, causing 86,390 deaths and total estimated direct damages of 186 billion US$. Among all these disasters those triggered by floods prove to be the most prevalent (40 %), followed by storms (28 %). In terms of mortality, most of the killed people were caused by heat waves, with a total of 81,673 registered deaths. Focusing on direct economic losses, floods provide more than half of the damages recorded so far, accounting 59.2 % of losses. Average annual economic losses in EU countries were around 8.5 billion US$, while the average losses per capita were almost 400 US$, which means an average annual loss of about 18 US$ per capita. As community‐oriented programs move from intervention to infrastructure, questions of just and equitable access to that infrastructure both arise and become more consequential to those served. However, extant tools are general in scope, often undertested, and inconsistently linked with positive outcomes for served communities and service providers. We explore the dynamics and implications of a key tool within this infrastructure intended to enable portable collaboration across organizations serving those who are experiencing homelessness: the VI‐SPDAT (Vulnerability Index ‐ Service Prioritization Decision Assistance Tool). This tool, while providing a means of coordinated assessment, must itself be negotiated according to the values, data concerns, and goals of the agencies and service providers who make use of it. This paper reports findings from 29 interviews with individuals working in nonprofits, charities, and government agencies that provide services or resources to people experiencing homelessness within the City of Austin's Continuum of Care. The life‐and‐death stakes of the VI‐SPDAT, which is designed to prioritize access to services based in part on a prediction of potential for premature mortality, drive home the need for equitable and just infrastructure. National family planning program and other development programs have contributed to the decline of fertility and mortality levels and in turn population growth in Indonesia (Samosir 1992; Haub 1989). Under the New Order regime, in Indonesia, family planning program was initiated and supported centrally by the government. However, in the Reformed era, family planning program is decentralized to the district government. Central government still provides districts with Specific Allocation Grant (Dana Alokasi Khusus/DAK) to support population development including family planning program. This study aims to examine the association between specific allocation grant for population development and population growth rate in Indonesia. The data used came from INDODAPOER of the World Bank in 2009 covering 372 districts in Indonesia. The dependent variable in this study was the population growth rate during 2010-2015. The independent variables were the total DAK for population development, net enrollment ratio (NER) of primary school, and household expenditure for the poorest 20 percent. The data was analyzed using a multiple linear regression. The results of the study show that lower population growth rate was associated with larger DAK for population development, higher NER of primary school, and lower household expenditure for the poorest 20 percent. Handwashing has increasingly become important in this COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to examine the consequences of handwashing on mortality and economy. Data from the World Development Indicators of the World Bank were used in the study for 82 countries in the world during 2009-2017. The dependent variables were GDP per capita and adult mortality rate. The main independent variable was the percentage of population with basic handwashing facilities including soap and water. The control variables included the percentage of population using at least basic drinking water services, the percentage of population using at least basic sanitation services, and HIV incidence. The data was analyzed using a structural regression model. The results of the study show that the adult mortality rate was negatively associated with the percentage of population with basic handwashing facilities including soap and water, even after controlling for other factors. The percentage of population using at least basic drinking water services, the percentage of population using at least basic sanitation services, and HIV incidence also had significant association with adult mortality. Video games are a popular form of entertainment, and their popularity is projected to grow in many industrialized nations. Research has indicated that video game usage could have potential benefits and drawbacks on health. One such drawback is poor sleep. Short sleep and poor-quality sleep are linked to increased risk for depression, obesity, all-cause mortality, and diabetes. The current study examined the associations between sleep behaviors and video game usage. Additionally, caffeine and alcohol consumption were investigated, as they may co-occur with excessive video game use and may jointly impact sleep. In the current study 1032 (72% female) undergraduate students were recruited from a university in the southern United States between 2006-2007. Participants completed several questionnaires examining various health behaviors and demographics at baseline, as well as sleep diaries every morning for 1 week, reporting on their sleep from the night before. Researchers conducted statistical analyses using traditional frequentist linear regression models, as well as Bayesian models. Traditional analyses revealed that video game usage was related to increased variability in total sleep time (TST), but not average TST across a week. Alcohol use moderated the relationships between video game usage and TST and variability in TST. Video game usage was not associated with sleep efficiency (SE) or variability on SE, nor was this association moderated by caffeine or alcohol consumption. Caffeine consumption was related to average TST, average SE, and variability in SE, while alcohol consumption was related to variability in TST and variability in SE. Bayesian models suggested little evidence that average or variability in TST was related to video game usage, caffeine consumption, or alcohol consumption. Only caffeine consumption was associated with decreased average SE and increased variability in SE. Overall, this study provides evidence that video game usage is not robustly associated with poor sleep among undergraduate students. However, caffeine or alcohol use may negatively impact the ability to fall asleep or stay asleep. Studies should replicate these results using longitudinal or experimental designs to understand the directionality of these effects. The article discusses important features of the statistics of the distribution of Covid-19 around the world. The reasoning is based on the well-known data of operational information on the countries, as well as the comments of experts. Particular attention is paid to countries with a large economy. This is the name of the country, for each of which GDP was more than 1% of world GDP for at least one year from 1980 to 2019. The World Health Organization is the only organization that could establish common formats and data requirements for all states with different health system organizations. The article shows how great the difference in the formation of data on a pandemic in different countries is. This makes it difficult to compare situations using standard statistical processing. Studies have shown that the mortality rate due to ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has drastically increased in developed and developing countries. The purpose of this study is to develop a diagnostic support tool to help classify STEMI patients and validate the predictive risk factors associated with STEMI using an ensemble learning approach. In this retrospective data-mining study, the data are retrieved from electronic health records of an urban emergency department between January 2017 and August 2020. A Random Forest model is trained to classify non-acute coronary syndrome (non-ACS) etiologies and STEMI patients using 38 features. Of the study cohort, 411 patients with chest pain fulfilled inclusion criteria, of whom 225 (55%) are STEMI, and 186 (45%) are non-ACS etiologies patients. The proposed framework successfully classifies the non-ACS etiologies and STEMI patients with recall and area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) values of 73% and 90%, respectively. We all have a desire to use evidence-based medicine to manage the needs of our patients. Unfortunately, we are in a field where objective, evidence-based data are lacking. To counter this, it is important for all professionals in our field to contribute new knowledge. One of the reasons more research is not done has been attributed to a lack of understanding of study design and statistics. The author believes that these types of obstacles can be overcome if veterinarians approach these challenges as they do veterinary medicine. Veterinarians are trained to use hypothetico-deductive reasoning and decision tree analysis when approaching their cases. Patterns evolve out of these methods which help grow our confidence as veterinary scientists. Similar patterns exist with study design and statistics. By following these similar thought processes, it is possible for veterinarians to gain the necessary confidence they need to perform these important tasks and contribute to our body of evidence-based medicine. In addition, knowledge of these methods can also improve the veterinary scientist's ability in interpret the peer-reviewed literature. As study flaws are common, understanding the limitations of a peer-reviewed paper can minimize the likelihood of incorporating this flawed information into our knowledge base. The goal of this masterclass is to provide attendees with an introduction to the methods used by the author to perform these important tasks. Economic growth is often associated with the welfare improvement. However, data show they can relate conversely. Behind economic growth there is dark side, among others is suicide mortality. This study aims to investigate the relationship between economic growth and suicide mortality. This research was done for 180 countries in the world in 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2016. The dependent variables are suicide mortality rate (per 100,000 population), female suicide mortality rate (per 100,000 female population), and male suicide mortality rate (per 100,000 male population). Meanwhile, the independent variables are GDP per capita growth (annual %), tuberculosis case detection rate (%, all forms), and total alcohol consumption per capita (liters of pure alcohol, projected estimates, 15+ years of age). The method used was multiple multivariate linear regression analyses. The results of data analysis found that the GDP per capita growth, tuberculosis case detection rate, and total alcohol consumption per capita had positive and significant association with the three suicide mortality rates in the world. A harsh public debate evolves in connection with the proclamation of very restrictive measures, followed by further austerity in the field of free movement, physical contacts restrictions and quarantine. However, according to most epidemiologists, these measures are essential to slow down the spread of the infection (i.e. to flatten down the curve) and thus gradually reduce the number of patients in need of intensive care for a longer period due to a more difficult progression of the disease. In addition to hospitals, care- and nursing homes along with their staff are at the most risk of spreading the infection. This is widely confirmed by the acquired data from Italy, Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia. However, there are significant spatial, microregional, and age-specific disparities in the uptake of the disease. The article seeks to explore the main differences in the mortality to age-specific ratios impacting the death toll of the disease across the four countries, along with the regional disparities, and the general national pathways in dealing with the epidemics. Applying the combined analysis of statistical and demographic indicators, the contribution sheds new light on the systemic restrictions on the population travelling abroad, elderly in nursing homes, youngsters in schools and kindergartens, and patients in hospitals. The quadruple comparison reveals the ways employed in restricting the spread of infection and the most vulnerable groups affected as well as it calls for a systematically interdisciplinary research approach.
