Semantic technologies are increasingly being employed to integrate, relate and classify heterogeneous data from various problem domains. To date, however, little empirical analysis has been carried out to help identify the benefits and limitations of different semantic approaches on specific data integration and classification problems. This paper evaluates three alternative semantic techniques for performing classification over data derived from the telecommunications domain. The problem of interest involves inferring the "health" status of network nodes (femtocells) from synthesized performance management (PM) instance data based on the operational PM schema. The semantic approaches used in the comparison include OWL2 axioms, SPARQL queries and SWRL rules. Empirical tests were performed across a range of data set sizes, using Pellet for axioms and rules and ARQ for queries. The experimental results provide (mostly) quantitative and (some) qualitative indication of the relative merits of each approach. Key among these findings is confirmation of the clear superiority of queries over rules and axioms in terms of raw performance and scalability. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This research presents and develops the CSE - a Controlled Category Search engine which combines the automated search engine and the hierarchic manual web directory. Thus, the size advantage and the internal textual search that the search engine offers are combined together with the advantage of the human control and category division of the web directory while using a convenient interface. Extracting valuable information in terms of number and content of published papers in any field of research will simplify decision making for future researches and investments. A novel and simple text mining approach, called TrendFinder, has been developed in this paper to reveal the content-based trends of expert-defined queries in selected biological published papers during the last five decades. So, in order to evaluate the results, three different data sets were collected and four vectors of selected keywords were considered as the four queries. "Title", "Published date" and the "Abstract" were downloaded for three series of journals namely, "Conservation Biology", "Ecology", and "The American Naturalist" as data sets, including total number of 19,010 papers. In order to show the trend between each query and the Abstract of each paper, Cosine similarity method was used by TrendFinder. Abstract. A frequent motivation for annotating documents using ontologies is to allowmore efficient search. For collections of newspaper articles, it is often difficult to find specific articles based on keywords or topics alone. This paper describes a system that uses aformalisation of the content of newspaper articles to answer complex queries. The data forthis system is created using Relational Content Analysis, a method used in CommunicationSciences in which documents are annotated using a rich annotation scheme based on an on-tology that includes political roles with temporal validity. Using custom inferencing over thetemporal relations and query translation, our system can be used to search for and browsethrough newspaper articles and to perform systematic analyses by evaluating queries againstall articles in the corpus. XML has become the most useful standard of data interchange in the web and e-business world and there is a large amount of information stored in this format. Nonetheless, a large quantity of information remains stored in Relational Databases. It is very important to be able to jointly manage these two data formats. One solution would be an integrated query model that would at the same time allow the query of a relational database and of XML data. Because of the growing number of applications that have to work in a web environment, the proposed system should use a query language based in XML and also return answers in the same XML format. In this paper, we make a detailed study comparing different systems that link both, databases and XML. Besides, we propose a new system to overcome the limitations found in them.
