The purposes of this play are to re-examine a certain history and to explore the theatrical possibilities of presenting it on the stage. The history is about a woman: Ting Ling, a Chinese writer who went through almost all the important events in modern Chinese history. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the process of writing this play. Chapter One explains how feminism has served as the basic perspective in the project. Chapter Two shows how Brecht’s epic theory has provided appropriate theatrical means to serve the goal of gaining a more active performance-audience relationship. Chapter Three shows how the feminist perspective and Brechtian epic approaches have worked in my playwriting, specific examples given. Chapter Four is the play itself, which was performed as a staged reading on January 23, 2004 at Miami University.
