- Abstract
A novel measure of adolescent emotion awareness, the Interview for Emotion Awareness (IEA) was developed and evaluated. The IEA is an idiographic, structured individually-administered interview based on a definition of emotion awareness grounded in the Affective Social Competence framework. The IEA represents a shift towards defining emotion awareness in terms of ability rather than perceptions of ease for identifying or distress when experiencing emotions. The IEA was administered to a small community sample of adolescents (n = 43; ages 13-18 years-old) and demonstrated adequate reliability. IEA scores were not significantly correlated with existing survey measures of adolescent emotion awareness; however, IEA scores were related to collateral measures of social competency and interpersonal connectedness, thus partially supporting the construct validity of the IEA as a measure of emotion ability. With recommended revisions to the IEA form and scoring manual, the IEA may provide a much-needed alternative measure of adolescent emotion awareness ability.
