Portable ultrasound systems are useful in point-of-care diagnostic. Improving the image contrast and spatial resolution over a large range of imaging depths while maintaining the minimum area and power are the desiderata in case of ultrasound systems. Adaptive apodization is used for obtaining high contrast and spatial resolution ultrasound images; however, the implementation of adaptive apodization in hardware consumes large area and power. In this paper, an adaptive algorithm is presented for obtaining good image contrast and resolution using low computational complexity. In the proposed apodization algorithm, minimum and maximum variance criteria and normalized cross-correlation are used to enhance the image contrast and spatial resolution over a large range of imaging depths. A resource optimized, IEEE single precision arithmetic-based architecture of the proposed method is also presented in this paper. Field II toolbox and the experimental data taken from the plane-wave imaging challenge in medical ultrasound are used for evaluating the performance of the proposed methods. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method provides better resolution coupled with the improved contrast performance than conventional dual apodization with cross-correlation methods. The architecture of the proposed method consumes 358.66-mW dynamic power and 1122.1 k NAND-2 equivalent gates are found to be in UMC 90-nm CMOS standard cell library. Implementation of the proposed method requires the calculation of inverse square root. A quadratic approximation-based inverse square root calculation method and its datapath to support IEEE single precision arithmetic are also presented. The datapath of the inverse square root calculator reduces the memory requirement up to 70% which need to be adopted in pursuit of higher performances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We revisit the sequential rate-distortion (SRD) tradeoff problem for vector-valued Gauss–Markov sources with mean-squared error distortion constraints. Our study is partly motivated by the question recently raised in the paper “Rate-cost tradeoffs in control” (in Proc. 54th Annu. Allerton Conf. Commun., Control, Comput., 2016, pp. 1157–1164) regarding the correctness of its solution algorithm known in the literature. We show via a counterexample that the dynamic reverse water-filling algorithm suggested by (15) of the paper “Stochastic linear control over a communication channel” (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control, vol. 49, pp. 1549–1561, 2004) is not applicable to this problem, and consequently, the closed-form expression of the asymptotic SRD function derived in (17) of the paper “Stochastic linear control over a communication channel” (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control, vol. 49, pp. 1549–1561, 2004) is not correct in general. Nevertheless, we show that the multidimensional Gaussian SRD function is semidefinite representable, and thus, it is readily computable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on the modeling of time-varying covariance matrices using the state covariance of linear systems. Following concepts from optimal mass transport, we investigate and compare three types of covariance paths, which are solutions to different optimal control problems. One of the covariance paths solves the Schrödinger bridge problem. The other two types of covariance paths are based on generalizations of the Fisher–Rao metric in information geometry, which are the major contributions of this paper. The general framework is an extension of the approach proposed in the paper “Smooth interpolation of covariance matrices and brain network estimation” (IEEE Trans. Autom. Control), which focuses on linear systems without stochastic input The performances of the three covariance paths are compared using synthetic data and a real-data example on the estimation of dynamic brain networks using functional magnetic resonance imaging. This paper studies the impacts of stochastic load fluctuations, namely the fluctuation intensity and the load power variation speed, on power system dynamic voltage stability. Additionally, the trade-off relationship between the two parameters is revealed, which provides important insights regarding the potential of using energy storage to maintain voltage stability under high uncertainty. To this end, Stochastic Differential-Algebraic Equations (SDAEs) are used to model the stochastic load variation; bifurcation analysis is carried out to explain the influence of stochasticity. Numerical study and Monte Carlo simulations on the IEEE 14-bus system demonstrate that a larger fluctuation intensity or a slower load power variation speed may lead to a smaller voltage stability margin. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this work uncovers the impacts of the time evolution property of the driving parameters, i.e., the load power variation speed and its trade off effect with the fluctuation intensity on the size of the dynamic voltage stability margin. In this paper, a transformer (TF)-based two-stage dual-radial power splitting/combining architecture with advantages of in-phase RF power splitting/combining scheme, compact splitting/combining network, uniform dc distribution, and symmetric dc current supply/return path is developed. To verify the feasibility of the architecture, a 5.2-GHz high-gain fully integrated PA is designed and fabricated on standard 0.18- $\mu \text{m}$ CMOS technology. The CMOS PA transmits 30.1-dBm saturation power (${P}_{{sat}}$) with 22.2% power added efficiency (PAE) at 5.2 GHz. The measured power gain is 30.8 dB and the output 1-dB compression point (${{OP}}_{{1dB}}$) is 24.1 dBm. The EVM has been measured with IEEE 802.11ac WLAN modulated signals. Using the 20-MHz bandwidth OFDM 64-QAM modulated signal, the PA meets the WLAN EVM specification of 5.6% up to 19.8-dBm linear output power. For a high data rate of 80-MHz bandwidth OFDM 256-QAM signal, the PA transmits linear output power of 17 dBm with 2.5% EVM. To the best of our knowledge, the CMOS PA achieves the highest output power, the highest power gain, and the highest OP1dB with decent PAE among other reported fully integrated CMOS PAs around 5 GHz to date. It is well known that the frequency synchronization of complex power networks is a prerequisite for stable operation. This paper investigates the global frequency synchronization in power networks via coordinating novel controllers on both the generator-side and the load-side. The designed controllers compute the monitored information from the generator-side and load-side simultaneously, and transmit the processed signals to steer the generators and load buses for maintaining frequency stability. In particular, the generator (load)-side buses can communicate with the load (generator)-side buses, not limited to the same side. Furthermore, nonlinear switching control protocols are proposed to analyze the frequency stability for overcoming the deficiency that the conventional linearized methods can only guarantee the local stability in or near an equilibrium state. The global stability region is rigorously proven, in which the sufficient conditions are derived for achieving global frequency synchronization of power systems. Finally, a prevailing modified Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC) 9-bus system and the widely-used IEEE 39-bus system are selected to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the theoretical results.
