This paper focuses on the deep and shallow architecture of multilayer neural networks (MNNs). The demonstration of whether or not an MNN can be replaced by another MNN with fewer layers is equivalent to studying the topological conjugacy of its hidden layers. This paper provides a systematic methodology to indicate when two hidden spaces are topologically conjugated. Furthermore, some criteria are presented for some specific cases. In this paper, a new Lyapunov functional-based method is proposed for the stability analysis of delayed cellular neural networks (DCNN). Global exponential stability conditions are obtained for the general DCNN, the Hopfield neural networks (]INNs), and delayed HNNs with monotonic nondecreasing and nonconstant activation functions. In this paper, the complete stability of cellular neural networks with time-varying delays is analyzed using the induction method and the contraction mapping principle. Delay-dependent and delay-independent conditions are obtained for locally stable equilibrium points to be located anywhere, which differ from the existing results on complete stability where the existence of equilibrium points in the saturation region is necessary for complete stability and locally stable equilibrium points can be in the saturation region only. In addition, some existing stability results in the literature are special cases of a new result herein. Simulation results are also discussed by use of two illustrative examples. In this paper, using a method based on nonsmooth analysis and the Lyapunov method, several new sufficient conditions are derived to ensure existence and global asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point for delayed Cohen-Grossberg neural networks. The obtained criteria can be checked easily in practice and have a distinguished feature from previous studies, and our results do not need the smoothness of the behaved function, boundedness of the activation function and the symmetry of the connection matrices. In this paper, the global exponential stability and periodicity of a class of recurrent neural networks with time delays are addressed by using Lyapunov functional method and inequality techniques. The delayed neural network includes the well-known Hopfield neural networks, cellular neural networks, and bidirectional associative memory networks as its special cases. New criteria are found to ascertain the global exponential stability and periodicity of the recurrent neural networks with time delays, and are also shown to be different from and improve upon existing ones. In this paper, we show that any N × M-dimensional delayed cellular neural network described using cloning templates can have no more than 3N×M isolated equilibrium points and 2 N×M of these equilibrium points located in saturation regions are locally exponentially stable. In addition, we give the conditions for the equilibrium points to be locally exponentially stable when the equilibrium points locate the designated saturation region. These conditions improve and extend the existing stability results in the literature. The conditions are also very easy to be verified and can be checked by direct examination of the templates, regardless of the number of cells. This paper proposes a novel optimal tracking control scheme for nonlinear continuous-time systems in strict-feedback form with uncertain dynamics. The optimal tracking problem is transformed into an equivalent optimal regulation problem through a feedforward adaptive control input that is generated by modifying the standard backstepping technique. Subsequently, a neural network-based optimal control scheme is introduced to estimate the cost, or value function, over an infinite horizon for the resulting nonlinear continuous-time systems in affine form when the internal dynamics are unknown. The estimated cost function is then used to obtain the optimal feedback control input; therefore, the overall optimal control input for the nonlinear continuous-time system in strict-feedback form includes the feedforward plus the optimal feedback terms. It is shown that the estimated cost function minimizes the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman estimation error in a forward-in-time manner without using any value or policy iterations. Finally, optimal output feedback control is introduced through the design of a suitable observer. Lyapunov theory is utilized to show the overall stability of the proposed schemes without requiring an initial admissible controller. The growing interest in pulse-mode processing by neural networks is encouraging the development of hardware implementations of massively parallel networks of integrate-and-fire neurons distributed over multiple chips. Address-event representation (AER) has long been considered a convenient transmission protocol for spike based neuromorphic devices. One missing, long-needed feature of AER-based systems is the ability to acquire data from complex neuromorphic systems and to stimulate them using suitable data. We have implemented a general-purpose solution in the form of a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) board (the PCI-AER board) supported by software. We describe the main characteristics of the PCI-AER board, and of the related supporting software. To show the functionality of the PCI-AER infrastructure we demonstrate a reconfigurable multichip neuromorphic system for feature selectivity which models orientation tuning properties of cortical neurons.
