Following the vision of future Supergrids, the existing power systems are expected to evolve into AC/DC systems containing voltage source converters with multiterminal configurations. This paper presents a new sequential power flow algorithm for such power systems. The algorithm can be applied to systems with multiple AC and DC grids of any grid topology. Because of its pure AC/DC network decomposition, the simplification of elements within the converter stations is not required, as is the case with other proposals in the literature. The paper also addresses the convergence properties of the proposed algorithm. A convergence factor has been designed that allows controlling the exit criterion within each inner loop of the sequential AC/DC load flow problem. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become a very attractive solution for interfacing high voltages in hybrid networks. The MMC enables scalability to different power levels, full controllability provided by insulated-gate bipolar transistors, and can achieve very high efficiencies by using a low-switching-frequency method as the nearest level modulation. However, the nearest level modulation requires a capacitor voltage-balancing algorithm, which can result in unbalanced loading for the power semiconductors in the different submodules. Particularly at low-power-factor operation, which could occur in the case of low-voltage ride through and of reactive power injection, the conventional algorithm is no more effective. This paper provides thermal stress analysis of the MMC in operation and proposes a thermal balancing approach, which is embedded in the capacitor voltage-balancing algorithm. The purpose of the thermal balancing is to achieve similar stress distribution among the different submodules to enhance the lifetime. The junction temperatures in the different submodules are studied for HVDC applications, and this paper proves experimentally that the thermal balance within the submodules is significantly improved. In this paper, a voltage balance control strategy based on dual active bridge (DAB) dc/dc converters in a power electronic traction transformer (PETT) is proposed. Based on this strategy, the output-parallel DAB converters can be equivalent to an input-series-output-parallel system. Furthermore, a PETT starting control method is put forward, which can effectively avoid risks of overcurrent and overvoltage in the PETT starting process. In order to carry out the controller design and system stability analysis, three different kinds of mathematical models of DAB converters are set up. The first model is related to a single DAB converter, the second model reflects the equivalent relation between an output-parallel DAB system and a single DAB converter in terms of the output-voltage control loop, and the third model indicates that the voltage balance control system based on DAB converters is a multiinput-multioutput system. Due to the nonzero off-diagonal elements of the controlled plant, there is a mutual effect between different control loops, which is defined as “interaction” in the multivariable feedback control theory. The stability of the voltage balance control system is made up of two parts, including the stability of each single-input-single-output (SISO) control loop and the influence of the interaction on the system stability. The research is carried out to measure the intensity of the interaction in this paper, and a criterion directly based on the controlled plant is proposed to predict the influence of the interaction, which can obviously simplify the system stability analysis. Considering the particular traction onboard application, a new control structure toward the voltage balance controller is introduced. Based on the new structure, the controller is designed and the stability of the SISO system is analyzed. Finally, a five-cell PETT prototype with rated power of 30 kW is taken to carry out further research, and the experiment results verify the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed algorithms. This paper proposes a decentralized control scheme for controlling active and reactive power of grid-tied ac-stacked photovoltaic (PV) inverter architecture using single member phase compensation. Reactive power control is required for the next generation of grid-tied smart PV inverter systems in power networks with high PV penetration. The decentralized control scheme proposed in this paper allows for a fully distributed architecture, both in terms of active and reactive power control and physical implementation of a PV system. This will result in higher reliability and potentially lower cost with minimum communications requirements. A decentralized controller enables higher switching frequencies that can shrink passive components. Therefore, string voltage variations due to voltage drop across passive components will be negligible and the system will be controlled with minimum communications requirement. The relative gain array approach has been used to study the feasibility of the decentralized control scheme. Detailed modeling and analysis are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach and the effect of this approach on control implementation. Finally, effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach is verified using mathematical modeling, simulation, and a lab-scale experimental setup in different operation conditions. Voltage ripple in single-phase ac–dc converters is usually disregarded to design the dc-link voltage control system, since large dc-link electrolytic capacitors are typically employed. However, replacement of electrolytic capacitors by film capacitors has been widely considered for increasing reliability. Consequently, due to cost constraints, such replacement usually employ low capacitance and may be combined with fast dc-bus voltage controllers. This paper shows that the conventional linear time-invariant (LTI) model may not represent the real converter behavior for reduced capacitance and/or faster controllers, leading to poor system performance or even instability. In this way, for any of these cases, the linear time-periodic (LTP) model is highly encouraged for stability and transient analysis as a tool for the controller design. Experimental results confirm that stability margins are precisely obtained from the LTP model but may not from the LTI model. Finally, this paper also compares both LTI and LTP models while considering the control gain and the dc-bus capacitance size. With the increasing use of voltage source converters (VSCs) in power electronics dominated power systems, oscillation phenomena in DC-link voltage control (DVC) timescale (around 10 Hz) among multiple VSCs have occurred. Several studies have tried to analyze these oscillation problems, but all associated with the single VSC situation. To consider the dynamic interactions between VSCs in DVC timescale, especially in the weak grid condition, this paper presents a small-signal model to understand VSC external characteristics based on motion equation concept also featured in synchronous generator (SG). Comparisons of time-domain simulation responses and eigenvalues show that the proposed model can hold the main behaviors of concern. The form of the model is very similar to the rotor motion equation in SG, with which power engineers have been very familiar. In addition, by establishing the relationship between the unbalanced powers and state variables of internal voltage (viz., VSC output voltage), the modeling idea introduced in this paper can be applied to other power electronic devices. This paper presents a distributed, robust, finite-time secondary control for both voltage and frequency restoration of an islanded microgrid with droop-controlled inverter-based distributed generators (DGs). The distributed cooperative secondary control is fully distributed (i.e., uses only the information of neighboring DGs that can communicate with one another through a sparse communication network). In contrast to existing distributed methods that require a detailed model of the system (such as line impedances, loads, other DG units parameters, and even the microgrid configuration, which are practically unknown), the proposed protocols are synthesized by considering the unmodeled dynamics, unknown disturbances, and uncertainties in their models. The other novel idea in this paper is that the consensus-based distributed controllers restore the islanded microgrid's voltage magnitudes and frequency to their reference values for all DGs within finite time, irrespective of parametric uncertainties, unmodeled dynamics, and disturbances, while providing accurate real-power sharing. Moreover, the proposed method considers the coupling between the frequency and voltage of the islanded microgrid. Unlike conventional distributed controllers, the proposed approach quickly reaches consensus and exhibits a more accurate robust performance. For the purpose of improving the performances of T-type neutral point clamped (T-NPC) photovoltaic (PV) grid-connected inverter under large grid, a passivity-based decoupling control scheme is proposed in this paper. First, the Euler–Lagrange (EL) mathematical model of a T-NPC PV grid-connected inverter with an LC filter is built based on the power circuit and operating principles. Second, with this EL mathematical model and passivity of the inverter, the passivity-based controller is designed by the damping injecting method. Third, by adopting a proportional integral regulator to directly control direct current (dc) voltage, together with passivity-based indirect control, better performances of the dc voltage control can be further obtained. With the proposed passivity-based controller, the PV grid-connected inverter can achieve both dynamic current decoupling under the synchronous rotating dq coordinate and dc side voltage dynamic decoupling, which can improve the quality of the current connected into the power grid. The passivity-based PV grid-connected inverter is with strong robustness against parameters perturbations of resistors and attenuating the influence of delay in the inverter. Moreover, the passivity-based decoupling control scheme proposed in this paper for the T-NPC PV grid-connected inverter has a simple structure, and is easily debugged and realized in engineering. This paper proposes a battery simulator (BS) based on a Z-source rectifier (ZSR), with the intention of emulating the discharge or charge characteristic of an actual lithium-polymer battery with high voltage and large capacity. The proposed BS is used for power testing for battery applications. The battery model, combined with a Shepherd model and a Thevenin model, is adopted to freely change the properties and specifications of the battery and to replicate the dynamic behavior of the battery, which is discretized to utilize the digital controller of the BS. The closed-loop voltage controller at the dc side of the ZSR is designed to emulate the rapid dynamic characteristics of the battery based on small-signal methods, considering the influence of the components of the impedance network. This paper proposes a secondary Model Predictive Control (MPC) based architecture to provide DC voltage and DC power control to MT VSC-HVDC networks interfacing wind power generation. The proposed architecture places the controller at a supervisory level, thus providing coordination amongst existing converters’ local droop controllers. Droop control is a type of decentralized DC voltage/power control. Hence, in case of secondary controller failure, droop control acts as a contingency control scheme. A simplified linear dynamic model of the MT VSC-HVDC network is utilised for the MPC's design, thus minimizing computational effort needed to compute secondary control action. Updates of droop gains and offshore and onshore “AC” variables, in the dq domain, are explicitly considered as measured input disturbances within the formulation of the MPC controller, thus, ensuring appropriate control response in order to minimise adverse impact of their variation on the overall system's performance, particularly under wind power variations. Simulation results show that MPC, whose design is based on the system's simplified linear model, is capable of delivering satisfactory performance when applied to the high fidelity non-linear full order model of a six-terminal VSC-HVDC network simulated in PSCAD. An improved version of power flow-controller (PFC) which is based on multi-winding transformer (MWT) is presented in this paper. The objective of this article is to control the power flow in a power-line to alleviate overload in a heavily loaded system and increase power flow of an under loaded line. The novelty of multi-winding transformer based power-flow controller is the use of unequal voltage ratio in the tap-changer windings of MWT with bi-directional switches to provide a compensating voltage required to achieve the desired power flow. This new model drastically increases the number of compensating points to make it more compact with higher flexibility. It aims to utilize the full potential of a line (bound by its thermal limits) to contribute in power flow by providing several times higher resolution with limited number of switches and reduced amount of copper and iron volume compared to existing state-of-the-art technology. The proposed MWT model has been included in Newton Raphson Load Flow (NRLF) method for power flow analysis. The feasibility of the model has been realized using a standard 5 bus test system and a modified IEEE 57 bus system. Operation of the PFC has been demonstrated using a hardware laboratory prototype for generating nearest compensating points (voltage vectors) corresponding to the obtained compensating voltages after load flow solution. DC–DC converters are expected to interconnect High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids with different configurations or voltage levels, which will increase reliability and operational flexibility. The dc Modular Multilevel Converter (DC-MMC) is suggested as a potential non-isolated topology for HVDC applications. This paper presents an energy-based closed-loop control for the DC-MMC. Such control structure provides a full control of the current components, while ensuring energy balancing in normal and fault operation. First, the converter configuration is described and the fundamental equations are presented. Then, the normal operation of the converter is explained from the steady state conditions and the energy and current components. A closed-loop control is designed to ensure a proper dynamic response, balance the internal energies of the converter, and minimize the ac circulating current. Also, the control structure is modified to ensure dc fault ride through capability. This paper proposes an efficient dc voltage control scheme in rail transit traction power systems with reversible converters for dc voltage regulation and power sharing. The proposed dc voltage control scheme is executed in a hierarchical structure based on the optimal power flow. Unlike conversional constant dc voltage control applied in traction power systems, this scheme allows the reversible converters operating in both rectifier and inverter regions and considers regenerative braking power sharing among multiple traction substations. The steady-state equivalent models of traction power systems including reversible converters are established, and the ac/dc sequential power flow algorithm based on Newton–Raphson method is presented. Finally, a multi-trains dynamic operation simulation is carried out with Matlab. The simulation results prove the validity of proposed scheme and indicate that the system energy saving effect in traction power systems with reversible converters is obvious with proposed scheme. Voltage sags mitigation has become a significant concern for utilities due to the pressure from both customers and regulators recently. This paper proposes a novel multi-objective optimization formulation for STATCOM allocation problem to mitigate voltage sags. The allocation of STATCOM is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem (MOP) with two conflicting objectives including the voltage sag performance and annual investment costs of STATCOM. To analytically evaluate the voltage sag performance in the optimization process, a mathematical voltage sag profile calculation model of power system with multiple STATCOMs is proposed and solved by nonlinear programming method. System Average RMS Variation Frequency index-X index is chosen to quantify the voltage sag performance for optimization. Sensitivity-based candidate bus selection is also performed as an essential step to reduce problem size. An improved multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) called SPEA2+SDE (Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm with shifting density estimation) is utilized to solve the proposed MOP model, so a set of Pareto optimal STATCOM allocations for voltage sag mitigation can be derived demonstrating the trade-off between two objectives and better supporting the decision-making. Electrical power generation, transmission and distribution systems are often simulated through the single-phase equivalent model by assuming the presence of only the positive sequence in the real system. The well known power flow (pf) analysis is typically used to determine the steady state solution of these single-phase models. After the pf solution was determined, other elements, such as for example synchronous generators and controllers, are initialised. This provides the initial conditions to subsequent transient stability analyses. Nowadays, this simulation approach may be no longer feasible due to the large penetration of unbalanced and/or electronic elements in the power systems. In this paper we present a novel numerical method that allows to freely compute the steady state solution of complex power systems made up of a “mixing” of conventional single-phase models and more complex, detailed three-phase models, for example of some portions of the transmission system and of the distribution ones. Distributed generation (DG) technology arises in several applications of power supply to tackle the issues of increasing energy demands. The concept of microgrids is introduced to integrate the DG technology into utility power networks. This paper introduces a fuzzy control scheme for networked systems utilizing a quantized H∞ estimator over communication networks for DGs subject random constraints. The developed estimation algorithm is worthy for ensuring the network stability and enduring any sort of quantization, time delay, and packet drops. In these senses, adequate conditions have been mainly derived by means of linear matrix inequalities. Recent technical advances in control, protection and interconnection of distributed power generation units imply that it is practically viable and economically profitable to keep them as backup generators in isolated operating modes. Therefore, along with the development of islanding detection techniques, seamless operation in transition between islanded and grid connected modes is required and more sophisticated control strategies are needed to recognize the existing working condition and adjust the performance to meet the strict standards of grid interconnection. This paper presents a new adaptive control structure, based on internal model control (IMC), which uses multiple models and an inherent islanding detection method through an optimized switching mechanism to tune the operation of a three-phase inverter under transitions between islanded and grid-tied conditions. By applying a power synchronization method, the system emulates the operation of a synchronous machine which is needless to rely on a phase-locked loop to synchronize during the transitions. Hardware co-simulation environment in Simulink/PLECS and Xilinx System Generator have been utilized to evaluate the transient behavior of the controller in discretized domain and verify its robustness during parameter variations and load switching conditions. Various switching rules have been applied and a comparison of their effect in transient response is demonstrated. This paper proposes a small-signal model and Floquet-theory-based method for analyzing small-signal stability of a single-phase asymmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (ACHMI) operating in the stand-alone mode. The studied ACHMI system consists of the power stage and cascaded control loops, which includes the voltage loop in the synchronous reference frame (SRF), capacitor current feedback control, and hybrid modulation scheme. Due to the SRF voltage control, the derived small-signal model under linear and nonlinear load conditions are inherently periodically time-variant. Therefore, the Floquet theory is employed to analyze the stability regions of the dual-loop control parameters of the ACHMI. Furthermore, the loci and moduli of Floquet multipliers are calculated to accurately evaluate the respective effects of control parameters on the stability of the system. With the stability analysis based on the small-signal model and Floquet-theory-based method, an effective selection range of control parameters of the multilevel inverter can be obtained. Finally, the experimental results from a reduced-scale laboratory prototype ACHMI are presented to validate the theoretical analysis, and the effectiveness of proposed analysis method in high-power applications is verified by the simulation results from a 10-kV medium-voltage ACHMI. This paper presents primary-side voltage regulated multitransformer quasi-resonant flyback converter (MTFC) for supplying isolated power switch drivers. The proposed topology offers distinct advantages over frequently used flyback converter possessing one high frequency transformer with isolated multiple outputs. Particularly, when a large number of separate dc supply units is required, then MTFC enables improved regular distribution of magnetic coupling between the common primary and the multiple secondary transformers’ windings providing a high degree of galvanic and electromagnetic isolation between multiple outputs. Primary side voltage regulation is based on the average output voltage estimation using auxiliary RDC circuit mounted across the primary windings. Operation principles of MTFC are enhanced with analytical study of cross regulation of multiple output voltages at unbalanced load conditions, indicating reduced voltage deviation of multiple outputs by applying the primary-side average voltage regulation. Experimental results of prototype 2-, 3-, and 6-transformer quasi-resonant flyback converters confirmed their cross regulation quality and application potential for independent multiple output supplies. In this paper, we propose a distributed voltage control in power distribution networks through reactive power compensation. The proposed control can operate in a distributed fashion where each bus makes its decision based on local voltage measurements and communication with neighboring buses, always satisfy the reactive power capacity constraint, drive the voltage magnitude into an acceptable range, and minimize an operational cost. Constant power loads (CPLs) impose instability issues in DC microgrids due to their negative impedance characteristics. This paper studies the problem of voltage control design of DC microgrids with CPLs. It is assumed that the power of CPLs is uncertain and belongs to a given interval leading to an infinite number of equilibrium points of the system. We develop a polytope model for DC microgrids with uncertain CPLs. Using this model, a robust two-degree-of-freedom feedback-feedforward voltage control framework is then proposed. The voltage controller is obtained by a solution of a set of linear matrix inequalities. The voltage control design strategy for each distributed generation (DG) unit is scalable and independent of the other DGs. The introduction of virtual-synchronous machine and generator as well as synchronous inverter (synchronverter), in recent years, has facilitated the integration of inverter-interfaced distributed energy resources (IIDERs) into the synchronous generator (SG) dominant microgrids and power grid. In this concept, the voltage source inverter (VSI) is controlled in such a way that it mimics the behavior of SG. To provide a reliable utilization of the IIDERs, a seamless transition of the VSIs between islanded and grid-connected operation modes is required. This paper integrates a novel virtual torque and virtual flux linkage-based synchronizing technique into the synchronverter controller to provide a plug ‘n’ play capability of the VSIs and their smooth transition between these two operating modes. A fast output voltage equalization control strategy applied to 10-kV/100-kW high power density photovoltaic dc–dc converter system is proposed in this paper. The converter modules in the system have two dynamic priority factor loops for fast response with an inconsistent voltage between modules and a soft start-up circuit to precharge output capacitance for solving inrush current problem in boost circuit. The proposed strategy can realize fast voltage equalization control under inconsistent leakage inductance and parasitic resistance parameters condition between modules compared to the traditional unified duty cycle control strategy. The fast equalization performance is verified by 10-kV/100-kW photovoltaic dc–dc converter system. During the unbalance operation of a standalone brushless doubly-fed induction generator (BDFIG), the negative sequence component causes significant unbalanced effect on the voltage and current of the power winding (PW). In this paper, a new control strategy is proposed to minimize the voltage unbalance effect of a standalone BDFIG under unbalanced loads. The proposed control strategy consists of two parts. The first part represents the conventional direct voltage control strategy to control the frequency and magnitude of the positive sequence PW voltage. The second part is the proposed strategy to minimize the negative sequence component in the output voltage of PW with a negative sequence compensator in the machine side converter. The dual second-order generalized integrator is used to extract negative-sequence component of the PW voltage. Proportional integral controllers are used to obtain reference of the control winding (CW) current which compensate the negative sequence component of the PW voltage. The proportional-integral-resonant controller is applied to regulate the CW current in positive reference frame. Voltage model observer is a simple and economical technique for flux estimation in induction motor sensorless drives. However, it shows poor performance in low-speed regions. Therefore, in most cases, the use of this observer is limited. On the other hand, using a simple but accurate estimator is important when the control method is sophisticated and requires heavy computation. This issue will be important in predictive control more than the other methods because the accuracy of the prediction is dependent on the flux estimation. In this paper, a modified closed-loop technique based on voltage model observer is proposed for flux estimation. The feedback loop is supported by the proposed model reference adaptive system direct flux magnitude estimation technique. The dependence of the feedback loop on the stator resistance is eliminated. Therefore, the drift error will be avoided. This will allow the method to withstand the high stator resistance error even at low speeds. Also, a new Lyapunov-based technique for the stator resistance estimation via reduced-order model is proposed. By using the proposed observer, the predictive direct voltage control technique is used as the control method in order to achieve a control method that requires low computation. Replacing the phase shifting transformers of interphase power controller with a reduced rating dual unified power flow controller (UPFC) results in a unified interphase power controller (UIPC) with potential for enhanced performance. However, in most cases, the UPFC is controlled as a static phase shifter (SPS), producing marginal improvements. A control approach that allows the minimization of the power ratings of the series voltage source converters (VSCs) of the UIPC was recently proposed. For that, one has to define four control parameters, as opposed to only two in the SPS-based UIPC. This can be done off-line, by means of an optimization procedure that splits the desired transmission line current among the capacitive and inductive branches of the UIPC. In this paper, a control scheme is presented for the implementation of the novel technique. The current sharing factors obtained from the optimization are stored in a lookup table. The gating signals for the VSCs are generated using Park's transformation so as to synthesize the optimal UIPC inductive and capacitive branch currents with proportional resonant controllers and sinusoidal pulse width modulation. The transmission line angle, as well as the magnitude and phase of the desired transmission line current with respect to the voltage at the receiving end voltage, is assumed to be provided by a transmission system operator. The term Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) commonly refers to the emulation of synchronous machines operation by using power electronics converters. However, a wider application of this control technique is still pending on further refinement of its design aspects and digital implementation. In this paper, a systematic approach to design the VSM parameters is introduced. First, a simplified third-order small-signal model of a VSM based on the conventional model of synchronous generators is developed. Unlike the existing works published in literature, the proposed model takes into account the effects of inductive and resistive weak grids. The model is then used to design the controller parameters by appropriately placing the poles of the closed-loop system. Multi-terminal high-voltage direct current (MTDC) systems based on voltage source converters (VSCs) are increasingly utilized. In such a case, dynamic interactions among different VSCs of each terminal become one of the leading problems for the ac/dc interconnected system. This paper presents a frequency-domain small-signal model of MTDC-linked VSCs in dc voltage control (DVC) timescale based on the motion equation concept. Control schemes, including two typical dc voltage-droop control, phase-locked loop, and vector control in DVC timescale are taken into account adequately. By considering the dynamics of both input and output active powers across the dc capacitor, the proposed model aims to describe the external characteristics of MTDC-linked VSCs independent of grid conditions, which makes it easy to extend in various types of MTDC systems. Reliability of power systems can be improved by the use of voltage source inverters (VSIs) with fast dynamic control, which can handle uncertainties induced by renewable energy resources and nonlinear loads. To ensure fast-dynamic response and simplified controller design, various model predictive control (MPC) methods are investigated in this paper. In the conventional MPC design for three-level VSIs, the cost function requires an additional term to ensure the balance of the neutral-point voltage (NP-V), which however can considerably impact the main goal of the MPC. To address this issue, an enhanced MPC using virtual space vectors is proposed, which allows the use of a significantly reduced weighting factor for the term in the cost function for NP-V balancing, while retaining fast-dynamic response. Additionally, the proposed MPC leads to reduced harmonic distortion in the VSI output voltage and current. Both simulation and controller hardware-in-the-loop studies are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed enhanced MPC in an operating microgrid under both steady-state and fast-transient conditions. In the conventional direct power control (DPC) methods, the grid currents are highly distorted, and substantial ripple is present in the dc-bus voltage under unbalanced and distorted grid conditions. Various improved DPC methods have been proposed to address these problems, but these methods are generally complicated and not easy to use because of the complex controlling structures, need for considerable tuning, and so on. This paper proposes an improved DPC method obtained by simply adding a compensation term to the original power references. The compensation power is obtained by analyzing the power ripple in the input line inductance based on extended power theory. The reference voltage vector is subsequently calculated from the new power reference and synthesized by space vector modulation. To improve the robustness of the proposed DPC against inductance variations, an online inductance identification technique based on the gradient correction method is proposed and combined with the proposed DPC. The presented simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve sinusoidal grid currents and significantly reduce the dc-voltage ripple even with mismatched inductance under unbalanced and distorted grid conditions. This paper proposes the predictive control with the discrete space-vector modulation (DSVM) for Vienna rectifier connecting to the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) of the wind turbine system (WTS). Since Vienna rectifier has the special operation principle, Vienna rectifier generates only the feasible eight voltage vectors, which can be a candidate vector for the predictive control, depending on the sign of the input currents. In the proposed predictive control, the feasible voltage vectors are extended from 8 to 19 consisting the 8 original voltage vectors and 11 virtual voltage vectors by using the DSVM for improving the current quality related to the torque ripple, vibration, and noise, and the neutral-point voltage balance with low voltage ripple is guaranteed by using the offset value calculated based on the model of two dc-link capacitors in Vienna rectifier. The scheme for reducing calculation burden is applied in selecting the candidate vector. In addition, the limited operation range for the maximum torque per ampere control of PMSG connected to Vienna rectifier is analyzed. Assembly of power-flow equations has traditionally begun from a nodal analysis formulation of the underlying transmission circuit's behavior. Most power-flow formulations encapsulate network constraints in the bus admittance matrix, $Y_{\text{bus}}$. From a circuit perspective, this admittance representation restricts the network elements to be voltage controlled; resulting drawbacks treating zero-impedance branches in such applications as state estimation have long been recognized. This paper explores the advantages of the alternatives to $Y_{\text{bus}}$ -based formulations in power flow. It proposes a sparse tableau formulation (STF), and it demonstrates its computational efficiency, robustness, and generality in detailed comparison to traditional $Y_{\text{bus}}$ -based solution algorithms. In the examples of power networks ranging from 1888 to 82 000 buses, computational case studies indicate that STF provides comparable computational speed, while allowing simple treatment of zero-impedance branches and more reliably converging to solutions in many cases for which $Y_{\text{bus}}$ -based Newton algorithms diverge. Voltage control plays an important role in the operation of electricity distribution networks, especially with high penetration of distributed energy resources. These resources introduce significant and fast varying uncertainties. In this paper, we focus on reactive power compensation to control voltage in the presence of uncertainties. We adopt a chance constraint approach that accounts for arbitrary correlations between renewable resources at each of the buses. We show how the problem can be solved efficiently using historical samples analogously to the stochastic quasi-gradient methods. We also show that this optimization problem is convex for a wide variety of probabilistic distributions. Compared to conventional per-bus chance constraints, our formulation is more robust to uncertainty and more computationally tractable. The European directive “Clean Energy for All Europeans” depicts for 2030 a new scenario for low-voltage distribution grids, where each end user will have the right to trade energy and offer demand response in the electrical market either individually or in aggregation with others. This creates a new perspective for renewable energy sources (RESs) and energy storage systems (ESSs), which become key elements to allow end users playing a substantial role in the electrical market. While many distributed RESs are already in place in low-voltage grids, the ESSs are still in infancy and will become a crucial asset of future microgrids. The optimal selection of ESS ratings and location within an energy network is still an open problem, and its solution can impact considerably the grid performance and return of investment for energy sources and distribution infrastructure. The operating principle of the clamp circuits like clamping diodes and flying capacitor in three-level LLC converter is different from other three-level converters, because the mean value of the resonant tank current is always zero and pulse-frequency modulation control is generally used instead of pulsewidth modulation control. And the converter with only the clamping diodes or flying capacitor is difficult to realize voltage balance. In this paper, the characteristics of the three-level LLC converter with single clamp circuit are first analyzed. Then, the operation principle of the hybrid-clamped circuit under the unbalanced voltages on input capacitors is described with the mode analysis, based on which the mechanism for voltage autobalance is elaborated and the effects of two clamp circuits are derived. Then, the design of the clamping diodes and the flying capacitor is also involved. This paper introduces a generalized control method based on the finite control set-model predictive control for a single-phase N-level flying capacitor multilevel rectifier used for solid state transformers. Unlike the conventional finite control set-model predictive control, the proposed method does not use the switching function to calculate the predicted value of the grid current. The proposed method also predicts the dc-link voltage without switching function so that it enables each leg voltages to be controlled stably and independently. Therefore, the number of states to be considered is significantly reduced, in addition to the computational time; and the level expansion of the flying capacitor multilevel rectifier is facilitated. In addition, since the cost function for controlling the grid current and that for controlling the voltage of the flying capacitor is separated, weighting factors are not required. Power electronics-based medium-voltage direct current (MVdc) microgrids consist of several interconnected feedback-controlled switching converters. Such systems experience bus voltage stability challenges owing to the negative incremental resistance of constant power loads and converter control loop interactions. To tackle the stability challenges, this paper presents the application of the interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control (IDA-PBC) approach to the port-controlled Hamiltonian model of dual active bridge (DAB) source-side converters in an MVdc microgrid. For the DABs, a fundamental average model approach considering phase shift modulation is provided and used for deriving the corresponding IDA-PBC control law. We analyze the effectiveness of the controller on large signal scenarios considering disturbances such as load step up, and DAB disconnection. The back-to-back (BTB) converter is one of the most popular converter topologies for the control of electrical machines, power transmission systems, and power quality applications. The conventional cascade control structure is commonly used due to its simple design procedure and reliable operation. However, the bandwidth of the dc-link voltage controller has to be limited in order to avoid instability issues and be restrictive in high-performance applications. This paper presents a differential- and common-current (power)-based state-feedback control for BTB converters. This controller features a fast control of active and reactive powers, and a stiff regulation of the dc-link voltage. A theoretical analysis of the proposed controller along with a strategy for current limiting is presented. Its robustness was tested against variations of the filter parameters, the dc capacitance, the grid inductance, and the grid voltage values. Passivity-based control (PBC) relies on an accurate mathematical model and thus its performance will be degraded by the weak robustness against parameters uncertainties, modeling error, and external disturbances. Moreover, it cannot achieve zero tracking error of the steady-state current under parameter uncertainties and modeling error. This paper proposes a novel disturbance-observer- (DO) based PBC (DO-PBC) for static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to achieve better stability and dynamic performances against disturbances. A DO that has been introduced into the PBC current loop is used to compensate system disturbances, which can improve the robustness of the control system and eliminate the steady-state tracking error. Moreover, the proposed DO-PBC provides faster responses in handling various kinds of disturbances. Then, the detail design process, stability and robustness analysis, and parameters tuning method are investigated and presented. Also, the proposed method is simple to be implemented by the separation principle. The performance comparisons among the proportional integral, the conventional PBC, and the proposed DO-PBC are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed method against disturbances and the precise current tracking, via simulation tests and experimental tests based on a down-scale laboratory prototype experiment of 380 V STATCOM. This paper presents a new five-level T-type nested neutral point clamped (T-NNPC) converter. The proposed five-level T-NNPC topology is very attractive for medium-voltage applications as it can work in a wide range of voltages without the need of devices in series, and fewer components compared to the other five-level topologies. A model predictive control (MPC) strategy is also developed for the proposed converter to control the output currents at different output frequencies, and control flying capacitor voltages. A discrete-time model of the converter is developed and the control objectives that are the output currents and flying capacitor voltages are defined regarding switching states. A cost function is defined to minimize the deviation of the predicted values of the control objectives from their desired values. During each sampling time, the best switching state is selected and applied to the converter. The performance of the proposed five-level T-NNPC and the developed MPC strategy is studied in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the feasibility of the converter is evaluated experimentally. Due to physical or control-related limitations, some dynamic state variables are constrained, such as the regulated voltage, the exciter reference voltage, etc. In addition, there exists a set of algebraic constraints that exactly confines the evolution of the system states. However, a systematic way to fully consider all inequality and equality constraints is lacking in the existing dynamic state estimation (DSE) literature. This paper proposes a general constrained robust DSE framework that is able to deal with various equality and inequality constraints. The project operator is integrated with the pseudo-measurements formulation in a unique manner to address the inequality and equality constraints, respectively, within the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) framework, which relies on the unscented transformation and is derivative-free. To this end, the derivative-free robust UKF is extended to address all the constraints while maintaining its robustness to measurement noise and bad data. Numerical results on the IEEE 39-bus system show that the proposed method exhibits the following benefits: first, improved accuracy of the state estimates in the presence of measurement noise; second, enhanced convergence speed and ability to address weakly observed dynamic state variables; and third, enhanced capability to deal with bad data and cyber attacks. This paper proposes a distributed control scheme to compensate for droop-induced frequency deviations in autonomous microgrids. In this scheme, no extra direct frequency control and proportional-integral compensation are employed to remove the frequency deviations; that is, the deviations are compensated instantaneously. To reduce the communication burden, the scheme is then equipped with a need-based (event-triggered) data exchange strategy. An event-triggering mechanism is introduced, which highly reduces the amount of communications in both transient and steady-state stages and ensures that the intervals between consecutive communication instants are positive (i.e., the system is Zeno-free). Stability and equilibrium analyses of the resultant system considering the whole system dynamics are provided, as well. Two-stage single-phase inverter system has found many applications in distributed generators and grid-connected systems. However, the existence of double-line frequency ripple on the dc-bus voltage due to single-phase inverter's operation has given rise to some design and reliability issues. Some of these are the degradation in the quality of inverter's output voltage and shortening of dc-bus capacitor's lifetime. The problem is rooted in the controller design of the front-end dc–dc converter, which is often designed based on a simplified mathematical model of the dc–dc converter that fails to account for some complex phenomena, such as system's nonlinearities and circuit parameter variations due to temperature and aging effects. In this paper, a disturbance-observer-based control is proposed where these unmodeled effects are treated in the form of lumped disturbance and compensated for in a feed-forward manner. The major advantage of this control solution is that only minimal plant information is needed for controller design and that a decoupled composite controller can be realized, where the feedback compensator is designed to meet certain stability criteria while the disturbance-observer-based feed-forward compensator is designed to handle fast transient events. A prototype of a dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter implemented with disturbance-observer-based control is constructed to verify its effectiveness. Experimental results show that the dynamic response of the DAB converter is significantly improved and the double-line frequency ripple on the dc-bus voltage is effectively suppressed by the proposed control solution. This paper presents an approach for dealing with the control of five-level, diode-clamped rectifiers. The control of such converters is challenging, as voltage balancing among capacitors is not a trivial task. Some of the existing approaches that cope with this problem use specific modifications of one of the traditional modulation techniques, such as using redundant vectors in space vector modulation (SVM). The main feature of the proposed technique is that part of the modulation is considered in the system equations and, in this way, the voltage balance can be solved designing a specific controller for this problem. As a result, several levels are used within a switching period. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed approach hardly affects the control of active and reactive powers and total dc-link voltage in such a way that the well-known direct power control can be applied. As a consequence, the resultant modulation stage is simpler than other techniques based on, e.g., SVM. High-frequency oscillations caused by voltage source converters (VSCs) in current control timescale (less than 20 ms) have brought great challenges to the security and stable operation of the VSC-dominated power systems. However, relevant studies on this multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system still lack enough mechanism cognitions of its voltage amplitude/phase dynamics. Thus, this paper will propose a single-input single-output (SISO) equivalent method of this MIMO system to separately study its amplitude/phase dynamics. First, a linearized VSC model based on internal voltage motion equation in current control timescale is derived. This model can explicitly depict VSC's self-characteristic, which is suitable for multi-VSC voltage amplitude/phase dynamic analyses. Then, with reserving and converting the interactions of other outputs into one output, the MIMO system based on this VSC model can be equivalent into the amplitude motion and the phase motion, respectively. These two SISO systems are extremely convenient for engineers to study the mechanisms of the voltage amplitude/phase dynamics. Besides, this SISO equivalent method of the MIMO system can also be used to quantitatively analyze the interactions among the multi-VSC. Conventionally, standard proportional and integral (PI) controllers with constant PI gains are commonly used for the dc-link voltage control of single-phase grid-connected converters (GCCs). For such controllers, the selection of the PI gains will lead to a tradeoff between two control objectives: 1) the reduction of the dc-link voltage fluctuations caused by random swings of the active power drawn by the single-phase GCC; and 2) the reduction of the grid current harmonics mainly caused by the 2f oscillation of the active power in single-phase applications. To solve this tradeoff, this paper presents a systematic approach for the design of an adaptive PI controller for the dc-link voltage control of single-phase GCCs. The proposed design approach is simple and it provides a convenient method to properly determine the adaptive PI controller parameters. It is considerable to reduce the computation load while keeping a good total harmonic distortion (THD) performance for the modular multilevel converter (MMC) with model predictive control (MPC). In this paper, the discrete-time mathematical model of the MMC is derived and the output voltage ripples of the cascaded submodules (SMs) are analyzed in detail. Accordingly, a modified increased-level MPC method A (IL-MPC-A) is proposed with 2N + 1 ac-side output voltage levels. The computation load is significantly reduced without losing the harmonic circulating currents suppression and capacitor voltage ripples compensation capabilities. In this method, the cost function minimization step and capacitor voltage sorting algorithm are combined to determine the optimal control option. In addition, to avoid the selection of weighting factors and further reduce the computation load as the increasing of the SM number, another modified IL-MPC-B is proposed by directly calculating the optimal ac-side output voltage level and arm summation voltage according to the discrete-time mathematical model. As a result, the ac-side output current and circulating current controls are decoupled. Furthermore, the capacitor voltages are balanced with a proposed control scheme by adjusting the circulating current reference. This paper presents a modeling approach for capturing closed-loop load behavior in distribution networks using bottom-up time-variant load models and incorporating load-flow feedback for thermal loads. Traditional load models are useful for providing insights into instantaneous changes in power, however, they do not capture the time-variant response to changes in voltage due to the effects of appliances with closed-control loops such as those which are thermostatically controlled. This paper proposes a modeling and co-simulation platform to simulate closed-loop load-modeling using state-of-the-art bottom-up load modeling techniques for the residential sector with a feedback model for time series steady-state load-flow. It incorporates time-variant load models and discrete state-space representation of thermostatically controlled appliances. The developed methodology is used in a conservation voltage reduction case study on an urban distribution network, allowing detailed assessment of the voltage response and analysis of changes in active and reactive power and network losses. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) is believed the most competitive solution for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission using voltage source converters. Circulating current suppressing strategies based on proportional resonant (PR) controllers are widely used in MMC. This kind of strategies can effectively eliminate all the circulating current components in MMC-HVDC. Unfortunately, it can result in dc-line voltage ripples under unbalanced grid conditions, and thus, deteriorates system performance and stability. Moreover, its existing control model may not exactly reveal the inherent characteristic of MMC, and consequently blocks the further understanding and application. To solve these two problems, first, this paper builds a new and effective control model for this strategy. Second, based on the new model, this paper studies the relationship between circulating current reference value and submodule capacitor voltage, modulation index, and arm current to correct and improve the current understanding of this control strategy. Finally, three improved strategies based on PR controllers are proposed. These improved control strategies can eliminate both circulating current and dc-line voltage ripples, which greatly enhance the fault ride-through capability of MMC-HVDC without adding extra control cost or the number of controllers.
