This paper presents an investigation of the underlying mechanism behind the interface charge barrier between oil and oil immersed paper. Two types of oils and two types of cellulose papers are selected in the study. The interface charges of the samples are measured by the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method and the zeta potentials of different oil-paper combinations are also measured. The results show that the amount of interface charge changes with the type of oils and papers, and is much larger than the Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars (MWS) polarization charge. The difference in the amount of interface charges cannot be attributed to the difference in the conductivity and permittivity of the materials. It is suggested that the barrier for charge transport across the interface, which is formed due to the electric double layer, should be taken into consideration to explain the interface charge behavior in oil-paper insulation. Oil-paper insulation of higher voltage winding and traction winding in on-board traction transformers frequently withstand large AC fluctuation voltages mainly combined with AC and inter-harmonic components. This paper presents the characteristics of partial discharge (PD) of oil-paper insulation under superimposed inter-harmonic AC voltages. The experimental results show that the addition of the inter-harmonic to the fundamental sinusoidal component results in variation of peak voltage and dv/dt along the phase. This superimposed inter-harmonic AC voltages has a significant impact on PD including partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV), breakdown voltage, PD repetition rate, and phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD). In addition, a dynamic characterization method of PD statistical parameters is proposed to determine the developing trend. The critical values and inflection points of PD are obtained. Besides, the theoretical mechanism is expounded to better interpret and understand the influence of inter-harmonic component on PD properties. In this paper, the temporal space charge dynamics under both temperature and voltage polarity reversal of an epoxy resin impregnated crepe paper are characterized by pulsed electroacoustic method. It is found that the space charge injection and the interfacial traps located between the epoxy and paper plays an important role in determining the space charge dynamics. The results reveal that below 353 K, the calculated interfacial charge density is consistent with the Maxwell-Wagner (MW) model, while above 353 K, it is smaller than the measured value. The time constant during charging is much smaller than that predicted by the MW model and the space charge injection showed polarity effect, which leads to the interfacial charge densities under polarity poling voltage not being equal. This paper presents an experimental work investigating the failure data of oil-impregnated paper under pulsating DC voltage. The failure data of the oil-impregnated paper specimens were obtained through constant voltage stress tests; the Weibull distribution was used to estimate the statistical distribution of failure data. The exponential function (EF) and the inverse power function (IPF) were used to modify the Weibull distribution of failure data, so as to obtain two dual-variable Weibull failure distributions (WFDs), which were used to analyze failure data of oil-paper specimens obtained under pulsating DC and individual DC and AC voltages. Their adequacies were evaluated by using failure data obtained through the constant stress tests under various voltages. Both EF-modified and IPF-modified WFDs show more adequacy for failure data of oil-paper insulation under DC and pulsating DC voltages than AC voltages. The oil-paper insulation of valve-side windings in a high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer is subjected to both complicated voltage and severe thermal stresses. Partial discharge (PD) occurring in oil-paper bounded cavities is influenced by voltage stress type as well as temperature. This paper presents PD behaviors in an oil-paper bounded gas cavity under pulsating DC voltages. The voltage across the gas cavity and PD inception voltages at different test conditions are analyzed. Influences of temperature on statistical PD distributions and parameters are also presented. A numerical model is used to interpret PD behaviors under pulsating DC voltages and various temperatures. Experimental results and theoretical statements show that the temperature exhibits a great influence on the behaviors of cavity discharge under pulsating DC voltages. The effect of HV impulses on surface and cavity partial discharges (PD) of oil-impregnated paper (OIP) is investigated in this work, by subjecting specimens to impulse voltages superimposed on a continuous AC voltage. The superposition of transient and AC voltage is relevant to insulation systems in power-system equipment, which is exposed to transients such as lightning and switching impulses during its operation. For several different PD-generating defects in oil-impregnated paper, the PD behaviors before and after the impulse are compared. The influence of moisture content is studied by using OIP with moisture content <0.5%, 3.0% and 5.5%. The results show a distinctive behavior of PD due to the impulse for each defect and insulation condition, either by change in the PD rate and magnitude or by causing PD inception or extinction. Recordings of the voltage signals and associated PD measurements during and after the incidence of a high voltage transient are of potential use for condition assessment of the insulation of power transformers and their bushings, as a form of online diagnostics. In comparison with the AC and DC working voltages, the effect of switching impulse voltage on insulation is very different because of its fast-rising rate and large amplitude. This paper mainly focuses on the characteristics of PD in oil-impregnated paper insulation under switching impulse voltage. First, a robust experimental platform was set up including the impulse power source, test samples with uniform gas and oil gap, and the signal acquisition and processing system. PD characteristics in the air and oil gap are analyzed and compared involving the time-domain waveforms, the variation tendency of the average amplitude and numbers of PD pulses, the occurrence time and the instantaneous value of impulse corresponding to the first PD. Based on the dielectric barrier discharge (filament) theory, a parallel microcircuit model was established to explain the similarities and dissimilarities, and to evaluate the gap discharge intensity. Heretofore, unlike HVAC transformers, there is not much experience in both insulation design guides and test methods for ultra HV converter transformers. This special insulation phenomenon is very prominent due to the complication of voltage applied on valve-side windings of converter transformers. There is a severe lack of empirical research on partial discharge in oil-paper insulation under the combined ACDC voltage. The study in this paper provides a timely research into the issues. Nine possible configurations, which intent to simulate different defects in the transformer, have been investigated. The PD inception voltages varied ratios of combined AC-DC voltages were conducted. The discharge magnitude and its relation with the applied voltage for selected four common configurations were obtained during voltage increasing and decreasing respectively, which presented the PD initiating process and also reflected the insulation behavior of dielectrics. Besides, the Finite Element Analysis Soft was used to propose the effect of morphology of electrode surface (3 dimensional roughness is approximately 0.03 mm) on PD characteristics, which is very lacking in the previous references. The oil-impregnated paper, which is the major section in converter transformer, plays a considerable role in the reliability and safety of power grid. However, the insulation degradation will be accelerated by the accumulation of charges that are on the surface of oil-impregnated paper. Therefore, the operating overvoltage occurs and irremediable damage will appear. Direct fluorination is an effective method of modifying the chemical components of polymer matrix so as to have effects on the surface characteristic of the insulating material without reforming the bulk properties. In this research, for studying effects of fluorination on charge behavior on the surface of oil-impregnated paper under the application of DC and impulse voltage, the F2/N2 compound, which the volume fraction for the F2 gas occupied 10 % and the pressure was 0.05 MPa in a reaction kettle for 5, 30 and 60 min respectively, was applied. Meanwhile, the chemical bond groups and the surface morphology of the fluorinated specimen were tested. Besides, the DC voltage amplitude was 4 kV and the applied time was 4 min. The impulse frequency was 500 Hz and the impulse voltage amplitude was 1, 2, 3 and 4 kV, respectively. The charge properties under various situations were investigated. From the research under the application of different fluorination time, impulse voltage amplitudes and polarities, conclusions can be drawn that, fluorination has significant effects on the chemical structure properties and surface characteristic of oil-impregnated paper. Furthermore, the initial potential can be reduced and the decay process of surface charge can be accelerated with different fluorination time increasing from 0 to 30 min. Nevertheless, the tendency is the opposite when the fluorination time continuously extends from 30 to 60 min. The trap distribution also exhibits alternation through the fluorination. The oil-impregnated paper, as a vital part in the oil-paper insulation system, serves as the main insulation medium in converter transformer suffering various electric fields. However, the accumulated surface charge on the paper would accelerate the degradation of insulation system and may lead to surface flashover. Direct-fluorination is a method to change the chemical components of polymer matrix thus could affect the surface property of the dielectric material without the alternation of bulk property. This paper presents a method to modify the surface structure of the paper applied in transformers. The paper used in the experiment was treated using the F2/N2 mixture with a volume fraction of 10% for the F2 gas at a pressure of 0.05 MPa in a reaction vessel for 2, 5, 10 and 15 min, respectively. The chemical elements, functional group and physical morphology of the paper before and after modification were measured with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) and scanning electron micrographs (SEM), respectively. Surface and volume resistivity of the fluorinated paper were measured. Furthermore, the surface charge property of the oil-impregnated paper was measured under various positive and negative voltages. Obtained results showed that the fluorination had an obvious influence on the chemical property and surface structure of the paper leading to the reduction of surface and volume resistivity. The treatment was shown to reduce the initial potential and cause acceleration in charge decay process. The trap distribution of the paper surface presented alternation as well. Due to its excellent performance, oil-paper insulation has been widely used in many power apparatuses including converter transformer of high voltage direct current (HVDC) system. Space charge accumulation phenomena may significantly distort local electric field inside transformer and cause oil-paper insulation overstressing. As a result of long term operation, oil-paper gradually degrades. In most severe cases, the breakdown of insulation system may occur. In this work, the effect of space charge on breakdown characteristics of aged oil-paper insulation is investigated. Oil-paper samples with different aging states are obtained by thermally accelerated aging for various periods of time, categorized by the degree of polymerization (DP) of 1107 (new), 725, 504, 376 and 241, respectively. Experimental results show that the breakdown voltage of oil-paper samples without pre-stressing remains almost constant with thermal degradation. After the homo-polarity pre-stress, when the DP value is higher than ∼300 (from 1107 to 376), the breakdown voltage has an increasing tendency with an increase in thermal degradation. On the contrary, the breakdown voltage presents a decreasing tendency after the hetero-polarity pre-stress. When the DP is lower than ∼300 (DP241), the changes of breakdown voltage does not remain the same trend as previous samples after pre-stressing. Meanwhile, space charge distributions in different aged samples are measured by the pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method, and the trap parameters are correspondingly evaluated. It has been experimentally demonstrated that special attention should be paid to space charge accumulation and aging state of oil-paper insulation, which may lead to severe insulation accidents. Oil-paper insulation system is an extraordinarily essential system of converter transformers as well as HVDC bushings. When the system changes its state, such as switching the thyristors, operating over-voltage appears, and the charge will deform the dielectric internal electric field, thus easily leading to the occurrence of discharge or insulation failure, so charge accumulation and dissipation on oil-paper insulation under pulse voltage need more investigation. This paper studies the surface charge behavior on double-layer oil-paper insulation under pulse voltage and inducing electrification was used to charge the oil-paper composite. Studies of various voltage amplitudes, pulse frequencies, numbers and polarities showed that the decay is fast initially, and then becomes slower with the time. Eventually the dissipation of charge behaviors tends to be flat. With the increase of voltage amplitudes, the surface potential rises, and less positive charges are accumulated on the surface than negative charges. The increase of the pulse frequency causes the initial values of surface potential a little smaller and the charge to dissipate more quickly. Also, with the increase of pulse numbers, the initial value gets bigger and the surface charge would be slowly dissipated. From the tdV/dt and decay time curves, the figures of positive voltage usually have two peaks, while there is only one peak in most of the curves under the negative one. With the increase of voltage amplitudes, the charge will dissipate more quickly. An oil-paper insulation system which will withstand DC voltage under normal conditions is a key component of converter transformers as well as high voltage direct current (HVDC) bushings. When the system changes its state, operating overvoltage appears. This kind of overvoltage will consequently affect the application of oilimmersed facilities and the safety of entire grid. Therefore, this paper studies the charge coupling behavior of double-layer oil-paper insulation under DC and pulse voltages. From the research of different pulse voltage amplitudes, pulse numbers and polarity, conclusions can be drawn that, with the increase of the pulse voltage amplitudes, DC and pulse voltages in the same polarity cause the absolute value of the initial surface potential to decrease and then rise; while in different polarities, the charge with the same polarity as the pulse voltage increases. Furthermore, for the same pulse voltage, the absolute initial value of the DC voltage applied in the same polarity is higher than that in different polarities. Considering the pulse number effect, it is obvious that the initial value increases with the increase in the pulse number, and then reaches saturation. Also, with the increase in pulse number, the decay rate decreases and thus the charge is slowly dissipated. From the tdV/dt and the decay time curves, the peak value increases with the increase in the pulse number, while the characteristic time varies by the polarity of the DC and pulse voltages. In this paper, an induced electrification was used to charge the oil-paper samples. The amplitudes of the DC voltage varied from 1 to 4 kV and the paper was 0.13 mm in thickness. From the research of different voltage amplitudes and charging times of the paper, conclusions can be drawn that the decay is fast initially, and then becomes slower with the lapse of time. At last the dissipation trend tends to be flat. With the increase of the voltage amplitudes, the surface potential rises more rapidly, and higher voltage would also cause the charge to dissipate more quickly. Longer charging times would cause the charge to dissipate a bit more slowly. The decay rate of the negative voltage is a little smaller than that of the positive charge. Moreover, when it comes to the effect on the interface charge of the paper layers, the surface potential is more proportional to the increase of paper layers. When the amplitude of the voltage applied in the test is small or the charging time is short enough, the interface charge can be hardly accumulated on the bottom layer. In addition, the tdV/dt and the decay time curves under the positive voltage usually have two peak values, while there is only one peak value in most of the curves under the negative condition. To investigate the characteristics of micro bridges and their interactions with partial discharge (PD) in oil-paper insulation under DC voltage, an experimental platform with two-copper-electrode models is established. Generation and growth of micro bridge impurities are observed. PDs in experimental process are detected and analyzed. The result shows that the generation and growth of micro bridges have three stages based on their quantity and shape. At first stage PD accelerates the generation of micro bridges. At second stage the grown bridges trigger stronger discharges. At the last stage a so-called "hazardous bridge" that triggers highly intensive PDs emerges, through which breakdown happens. Therefore, bridges and PDs promote each other to cause insulation failure. In addition, impurities at the second stage are observed to transform into pile-like, bridge-like or particle-like shapes. The transformation process is considered to relate with the change of composition force on fiber bundles. Transformer oil, insulating paper, high voltage direct current (HVDC) bushings and on-load tap changer (OLTC) are essential parts of converter transformers. When the power flow of the HVDC system is reversed or a sudden outrage occurs, the charge field will deform the dielectric internal electric field, thus easily leading to the occurrence of discharge or insulation damage. In this case, it is necessary to carry out the characterization of the oil?paper interface to avoid these consequences. This paper analyses the interface charge accumulation and dissipation characteristics of an oil?paper insulation system under DC and polarity reversal voltages. In this paper, induced electrification was used to charge the composite oil?paper insulation. The amplitude of DC and polarity reversal voltages applied in this paper was 4 kV, and paper with thicknesses of 0.08 and 0.13 mm was used. This research offers a theoretical exploration to optimize the transformer oil? paper insulation structure and prevent damage to its insulation systems. From the research on different layers and thicknesses of paper, it can be concluded that the decay is fast in the initial period and then becomes slower with the lapse of time until finally the decay curve tends to become flat. With an increase in the number of the paper layers, the interface charge density decreases. So in real life multilayer paper is used to avoid failures owing to its structural weakness. Regarding the DC polarity reversal effect, increasing the thickness of the paper is equivalent to adding paper layers. The dissipation rate of the positive interface charge is quicker than that of the negative one. In the polarity reversal test, the dissipation rate becomes smaller as the reversal time gets longer. The paper presents new diagnostic method applied to assess aging degree for paper-oil insulation used in professional electrical power device, primarily including medium and high power transformers. The described method is based on modified diagnostics using the recovery voltage effect occurring in dielectrics (RVM ? Recovery Voltage Methods). Modification of the RVM method applied so far, which is now used only to assess moistening degree for paper-oil insulation in power transformers, consists in a new parametric analysis of recovery voltage time characteristics. Simulation and experimental tests carried out in laboratory conditions for adequately prepared insulation samples have proven that the time-constant of recovery voltage decay (?R_MIN) is the most susceptible parameter as regards quantitative change in the function of aging of the examined insulation. This conclusion is also confirmed by statistical studies, in which a multi-parameter variance analysis method has been applied. An original equivalent circuit diagram of the insulation has been used to simulate aging degree of paper-oil insulation samples in numerical tests. Repeated impulses have long been considered to affect the insulation properties of electrical equipment. This interesting but rarely studied phenomenon may pose great risks to the reliable operation of power equipment. Therefore, in this work, we focus on the accumulative effect of repeated lightning impulses on the oil-impregnated paper (OIP) used in power transformers. Specifically, we study the effect of space charge on the accumulative characteristics of OIP. A repetitive impulse accumulating test platform was set up, and the tests were conducted to obtain the accumulative characteristics of OIP under repeated lightning impulses. The accumulative characteristics of OIP with various interval time were experimentally identified to study the influence of interval time on the accumulative effect. Then, space charge in OIP samples were investigated using the pulsed electro-acoustic technique. Charge behavior in OIP was analyzed under different conditions, i.e., changing the applied times, amplitude and interval time of the applied lightning impulses. Charge injection and transport occurred during lightning impulse accumulation. The increased application of lightning impulses, high applied voltage, and short interval time contributed to the accumulation and transport of space charges. A method of predicting the residual breakdown electrical field strength of an epoxy-mica paper insulation system is described. This method was developed by using data on service?aged stator bars from generators as well as accelerated aging model bars. Thermal aging, mechanical aging, and combined thermal and mechanical aging were done individually as accelerated aging. The partial discharge characteristics, dissipation factor, and breakdown voltage were measured on the model bars and service?aged bars from generators. From these results, the residual breakdown electrical field strength was predicted based on the partial discharge characteristics and dissipation factor. First, the dominant type of deterioration (thermal or mechanical aging) on a bar?s insulation was determined by the pattern of voltage?partial discharge magnitude characteristics. Then the residual breakdown electrical field strength was predicted by using a predicting equation for both thermal and mechanical aging. Each predicting equation uses dissipation factor tip-up (i.e. difference in dissipation factor values between 2 kV and rated voltage) and partial discharge inception electrical field strength. The accuracy of this method was confirmed using data measured on 112 service-aged stator bars from generators and 10 accelerated aged model bars. The 95% confidence interval level included 94% of the measured residual breakdown electrical field strength values. In this paper, the rapid aging due to Partial Discharge (PD) activity was investigated in unaged and thermally aged oil-impregnated paper with a disk-shaped cavity between the sheets of paper. The PD inception voltage and the voltage for instantaneous breakdown were measured, and the time to breakdown was measured by applying voltages less than the instantaneous breakdown voltage. A comparison between time to breakdown of unaged and thermally aged paper shows no significant difference between thermally aged and unaged paper at sustaining PD activity. The time to breakdown as a function of applied electric field was plotted and compared for both cases showing points scattered around a line in log-log scale. Changes of the PD parameters, such as PD magnitude and PD repetition rate were analyzed from the beginning of PD activity up to the moment of breakdown. The results show that the number and magnitude of PD increase at the beginning of aging until they reach to a maximum value, then both quantities decrease slowly over time until the final puncture breakdown occurs. The results emphasize the importance of PD monitoring on real equipment with oil-impregnated paper as insulation system, such as power transformers, since a focus on the number and magnitude of PD at just the present time may mislead the interpretation. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements performed on unaged and thermally aged paper showed an increasing trend of ε" after the sheets of paper were exposed to thermal aging for longer time. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements performed on samples before and after exposure to PD activity showed a big change of ε", This change can be attributed to byproducts and ions produced by PD activity. Space charge behavior is important in the oil-immersed-paper insulation in converter transformers for HVDC transmission. This paper reports an investigation of the space charge property in samples with two layers of oil-immersed-paper and oil. Based on pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) technique, a waveform recovery method was proposed to get rid of the effects of interface and anisotropy on PEA result, and the space charge distributions in the two-layer samples under different voltage and oil thicknesses were measured. It?s found that the charges with the same polarity as oil side electrode were accumulated at the interface and gradually increased with the increase of applied voltage. However, the positive charge charges always appeared in the oil under positive and negative voltages. Moreover, the charges in samples increased with the increase of applied voltage, while the amount of interface charges decreased with the increase of oil thickness. Due to the existence of interfacial charges, the electrical field in oil-immersed-paper was distorted with its maximum close to the interface. It is indicated that due to the different mobility properties of charges in paper and oil and the interface trap state, the interface between paper and oil plays an important role in charge formation and decay. Compared to conventional ac cables, the current rating of HVDC cable circuits is more complicated because the permissible current is not only limited by the operating temperature, but also by the electrical stress within the insulation. Therefore the IEC60287 current rating standard is considered insufficient for some HVDC applications because it fails to include the stress limitation. This paper presents an analytical methodology to calculate an electrical stress-limited rating for HVDC cables, which considers the maximum dielectric stress as the current limiting factor. Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. Voltage-controlled three-phase three-leg inverters are widely applied in various occasions. The inverters are generally switched to the current-controlled mode to limit the fault currents when short-circuit faults happen. Under symmetrical fault, the inverter can be controlled as a symmetrical, three-phase current source. However, the voltage limiting will happen under asymmetrical fault. As a result, the fault phase currents will be distorted and cannot be completely controlled. Considering that the voltage limiting is mainly caused by large load impedance of healthy phase under asymmetrical fault, the voltage limiting is avoided by paralleling the virtual impedance with the output filter capacitor in this paper. As a result, the current limiting loop is not broken and the fault phase currents can be effectively controlled. The implementation of virtual impedance in control system and the influence of virtual impedance on the stability of system are also analyzed in detail in this paper. This paper presents an online method to monitor the conditions of the substation grounding grid. The proposed method utilizes phase-to-ground faults occurring in downstream feeders as test current sources and the neutral of a specially selected feeder as the electrode for GPR (ground potential rise) measurement. The measured fault currents and GPRs are then used to estimate substation grounding grid impedance. The method, once established, can monitor the grounding grid impedance continuously and automatically, and the trend of the impedance change can be observed. As a result, the proposed method can yield much more reliable information on the substation grounding conditions. The method also overcomes many disadvantages of the offline methods. The surface voltage of an insulator assumes importance for understanding tracking and flashover characteristics. Until now, determination of surface voltage of insulating surfaces is left to simulation software and such simulations are left unverified experimentally, leading to uncertainty of the results, which may sometimes be erratic with improper choice of boundary or initial conditions or inaccurate material properties, nonlinearities etc. The paper presents a novel method, using which the surface voltage of any insulating surface such as insulator strings or transformer bushings can be measured. Unlike a conducting surface, the measurement of insulating surface voltage using voltage dividers would be erratic as the measuring arrangement itself will vary the voltage division due to the local unknown impedance between the insulated surface and hv conductor. Recently a method for measurement of surface voltage of an insulated conductor using cylindrical strips was reported. In this paper, based on analytical derivations, a more generalized method of measurement, applicable to any point on an insulating surface of arbitrary geometry is proposed using circular-disc strips. The proposed experimental method is applied to insulator strings and transformer bushings and validated by simulation of the entire systems. Electrical equipment of the floating nuclear power plant operates in a long-term vibration environment. Ground faults occur frequently and are often accompanied by arc, a reliable arc suppression algorithm for the generator stator winding is necessary. In this paper, an active arc suppression method is proposed by connecting a controllable voltage source to the generator neutral point. Through regulating the neutral point voltage to be equal in amplitude and opposite in phase to the fault potential, the fault point voltage can be clamped to a low level to achieve arc suppression. Since the generator's phase potential contains certain harmonic components, the controllable voltage source includes fundamental and third-order harmonic components. To accurately calculate the output voltage, online calculation methods for the fault location, fault potential and grounding capacitance are proposed. The accuracy of the fault location method is verified by simulation and dynamic test. And simulation results based on PSCAD/EMTDC software show that the proposed method can achieve effective arc suppression at different ground fault conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Direct lightning poses a serious threat to the safety of power systems. In recent years, the lightning fractal model, which can reflect the fractal characteristics and randomness of lightning leaders, has been gradually applied to direct lightning protection for substations, transmission lines, etc. However, since few studies have linked simulations with experiments, the reliability of the lightning fractal model in terms of attachment probability prediction lacks experimental verification. In this paper, a series of attachment tests are carried out under a rod-rod gap. The equivalence between simulation tests and natural lightning is discussed, and the influencing factors of the attachment results are investigated. The attachment probability is simulated and compared to the test value under each test configuration. The test results show that the fractal dimension of discharge channel is consistent with the observation results of natural lightning. Under different configurations, the test value of attachment probability basically conforms to the simulation value. In general, the dispersion of the test results is slightly greater than the simulation results, but the average probability differences are all within 10%. Phase–locked loop (PLL) is commonly used for the grid-connected voltage-source converter (VSC) to synchronize with the grid. Under weak grid conditions, it has been found that the frequency-dependent characteristic of the network impedance inherently introduces a positive feedback loop into PLL. Previous studies focused on the PLL analysis intuitively believe that the positive feedback loop will deteriorate the dynamic performance of the PLL. However, this conclusion is not rigorous since only the dynamic of the PLL is considered and the theoretical analysis is insufficiency to reveal the influence of the positive feedback loop on system stability. In this paper, the impact of the frequency-dependent network on VSC stability is quantified in terms of the overall system based on the damping torque analysis. It is found that the influence of the positive feedback loop on stability depends on the parameters of the PLL and the damping of the dominant eigenvalues. Besides, an angular frequency feedback scheme is proposed to eliminate the adverse effect of the frequency-dependent network and enhance the stability of the VSC under weak grid conditions. This paper presents an experimental study on the characteristics of creeping discharges propagating over pressboard immersed in olive oil, rapeseed oil, tetra-ester, methyl oleate, and mineral oil, under both negative and positive DC voltages. The investigated characteristics are mainly the shape of discharges and their stopping lengths. Two experimental test cells are used: in the first one, the pressboard is inserted between pointe and plane electrodes so that the tip is perpendicular and at the center of the pressboard sample; and in the second one, the pressboard is placed between a point and bar electrodes in a way that allow a propagation in one direction (tangentially to pressboard). It is observed that the creeping discharges under DC voltage are not radial. Their shapes are different from those observed in previous work under AC and lightning impulse voltages. On the other hand, for given voltage and pressboard thickness, the stopping length Lf is shorter when the point is negative than when it is positive indicating that the flashover voltage will be greater with a negative point This also evidences a difference in the processes involved in each polarity especially the space charge resulting of the injected charges and the charge accumulated at the interface (including the charges resulting of double layer) as well as the evolution of the electric field in the vicinity of the point electrode and along the pressboard surface. The modular multilevel converter (MMC), owing to the presence of a large number of submodules (SMs) and energy storing elements, requires a large footprint and initial investment. To address these issues, this paper proposes the switched modular multilevel converter (SMMC). It consists of two major elements; the chain-links (CLs), consisting of cascade connection of SMs as in MMC, and the single-pole-triple-throw (SPTT) switches, which can be realized using either the T-type or NPC-type switch strings. The SMMC works on the principle of connecting all the phase-legs in series and their respective positions are mutually interchanged. It offers a compact structure as the SMs count is reduced to 33% of MMC, which results in a much lower energy storage requirement. Furthermore, it does not have inter-phase circulating current problem and hence the CL inductors can also be avoided. The SMMC structure, operating principles, control, and modulation schemes are explained in detail. A detailed comparison of SMMC with the other major existing converters is carried out to highlight the important features of SMMC. The efficacy of SMMC is validated using PSCAD simulation studies with a 19-level grid-connected SMMC model. This paper focuses on the issue of network connectedness (NC) in security-constrained optimal transmission switching problems, which is complicated by branch contingencies and corrective line switching. Two criteria are firstly proposed with the principle of preserving NC as much as possible within reasonable limits. By extending the electrical flow based NC constraints, a proposition is derived to associate different cases of NC with the optimum of a linear program, yielding the mathematical formulation of the NC criteria. By Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, this formulation is further transformed into a tractable version which can be incorporated with existing SCOTS models without affecting the applicability of original solution approaches. This paper presents a novel hierarchical cooperative control strategy to solve the problems of unbalanced State of Charge (SoC), unreasonable load current sharing, and unstable bus voltage for battery storage system (BSS) in islanded DC microgrid. In the communication layer, a neighbor-to-neighbor communication network architecture is constructed in which each battery storage unit (BSU) only communicates information with neighboring nodes, and a multi-agent consensus algorithm is used to iteratively estimate the relevant average global variables. In the main control layer, the droop coefficient is dynamically adjusted by constructing a fast SoC convergence function to ensure that the load current is reasonably distributed based on the rated capacity of each BSU. In the secondary control layer, a virtual voltage drop equalization controller and an average bus voltage compensation controller are designed to eliminate the impact of line impedance mismatch and compensate the average bus voltage. Furthermore, an optimized factor is designed to accelerate the later stage of SoC convergence. Finally, a DC microgrid experimental platform based on StarSim HIL is built, and the results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can achieve the control objectives of fast SoC balance, proportional load current sharing, and bus voltage stability. This paper proposes a time-domain method of characteristics to simulate the impulse corona with background space charge, and derives the ordinary differential equations of the space charge generated by the impulse corona along the electric field line. The corresponding boundary conditions, the selection of time step and space step, and the update strategy of space charge are given. The calculation result of the impulse corona onset voltage is consistent with the test result, proving that the background space charge has almost no effect on the impulse corona onset electric field which is obtained by Kaptzov's assumption. The q-u curve obtained by simulation is compared with the test results to verify the effectiveness of the simulation method. The simulation method is used to obtain the development process of space charge during the application of the opposite polarity impulse voltage. By analyzing the space charge distribution during the process of impulse corona, and the corresponding microscopic charge distribution and macroscopic charge amount at different corona states, the characteristics of impulse corona are explained. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the creeping discharge characteristics on mineral oil-impregnated pressboard (OIP) under combined AC and DC voltages. The creeping discharge behavior at various voltage levels to failure were analyzed using partial discharge (PD) measurements, camera observations, and electric field simulations. It was found that the creeping discharge distribution was significantly influenced by the DC component, and it was difficult to induce failure even on OIP with high moisture under combined AC and DC voltage. The flashover along the free-oil boundary layer above the OIP during creeping discharge occurred much more easily under combined AC and DC than under AC voltage, and the quality of the oil was important to avoid flashover. An closed oil circulating system with plane electrode was built to study the effect of space charge on oil flow electrification under DC voltage. The results reveal that with the increase of applied voltage, the streaming current was always enhanced. However, the polarity of streaming current depends on the sample configuration. If the negative high voltage electrode was exposed to oil layer, streaming current was negative. Otherwise streaming current had a tendency to be positive as applied voltage increased. In experimental model without exposed electrode, the polarity of streaming current was always positive. And the amplitude of streaming current was related to the number of insulating papers placed under electrode. More craft papers placed under negative high voltage electrode led to the increase of streaming current. Based on the bipolar transport model, a new simulation method is proposed to study the effect of charge injection and transportation on flow electrification under DC voltage. This paper presents the induced voltage measured at the terminal of a 10 kV distribution line when triggered lightning taking place at a distance of 40 m. It is shown that the induced voltage waveforms exhibit three components including a slow increase preceding the initial negative peak, following a rapid polarity reversal and the attenuated oscillations. The waveform parameters are defined in this paper. The observed negative peak value ranges from −47.1 kV to −7.5 kV. The positive peak value ranges from 5.3 kV to 20.9 kV, and the peak to peak value ranges from 12.8 kV to 63.2 kV. The test results show that the negative peak value of the induced voltage at the terminal of distribution generated by nearby negative triggered lightning generally exceeds the positive peak value, and in some cases the negative peak value even reaches twice the positive peak value. The negative 10%-90% rise time ranges from 2.3 μs to 88.5 μs, and the average oscillation period is about 18 μs. Both negative and positive peaks of induced voltages show good linear relationship with the peaks of lightning return stroke current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impulse grounding performance of distribution lines tower is the key factor to lightning protection. Few field high-current impulse test researches are conducted on distribution line tower. In this paper, we used a mobile high-current impulse generator to conduct test on a 10 kV distribution line tower. The peak value of the current injection is 6 kA to 16 kA. The impulse impedance and the surface potential distribution are measured and analyzed. Based on the CDEGS software, an equivalent modeling of the experiment was carried out. The influence of soil ionization was taken into account by the method of changing the conductor radius through two rounds of calculation. The simulation and measured results were basically consistent. Experiments have shown that the soil ionization effect has an important impact on lightning performance of distribution line tower. The graphite earthing modules (GEMs) and pulling wires can significantly reduce the impulse impedance of the tower. The potential rise of the earth surface at a distance of 30 m from the tower can reach 1 kV at peak, under an injection of 7.15 kA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is an on-going need for faster, more accurate, and easier to implement threat identification systems for concealed electronics, to thwart terrorism and espionage attempts. Common electronics are used in the design of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), targeting military, and civilian populations, while concealed recording devices steal proprietary/confidential data, compromising both government and industrial resources. This paper discusses a novel, nonintrusive, repeatable, reliable, expandable, and simple-to-implement detection and identification (D&I) system for identifying threats by using unintended radiated emissions (URE). This paper differs from current URE proposals, by avoiding energy radiation. The proposed process also addresses big data problems involved in capturing and building databases of URE characteristics. Issue interpretation is utilized with URE data to distinguish between threat/nonthreat devices using multiple criteria decision analysis and other decision-making techniques to determine model and mode of hidden devices. System optimization, verified by testing, is used to improve the speed and accuracy of the identification algorithm. The system is developed with data from 130 devices and validated with 33 separate devices, which are representative of IED and espionage threats. Due to slow progress in the URE D&I field, the properties and potential of a more effective D&I system, compared to current methods, will be of interest to the explosive ordnance disposal, security services, electronic systems manufacturing, automated inventory, mobile application development communities, and potentially others as well. This paper presents a novel distributed voltage control method for multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) systems based on the average consensus algorithm. The proposed method combines the idea of secondary integral voltage control and regulator synchronization problem. It realizes adjustable tradeoff between two conflicting control objectives, that is, voltage regulation and power sharing. The proposed control algorithm only needs a low-bandwidth communication between two adjacent voltage source converters (VSCs) and local information to work effectively. Moreover, regarding the system dynamic response, a parameter tuning method for the proposed controller is provided to achieve the fastest convergence of the distributed control algorithm. This paper also develops a small-signal dynamic model for VSC-MTDC systems with distributed controllers to evaluate the system dynamic performance. The proposed method is validated by time-domain simulation of a 4-terminal VSC-MTDC system. The simulation results show that flexible tradeoff between voltage regulation and power sharing can be achieved under necessary constraints on the DC bus voltages and power sharing ratio. This paper emphasizes the importance of including unbalanced distribution systems for voltage stability studies in power systems. The paper aims to: discuss the various simulation methods for power system analysis; highlight the need for modeling unbalanced distribution system for accurate load margin assessment; demonstrate the influence of net-load unbalance (NLU) on voltage stability margin (VSM). We also share a T&D co-simulation interface with commercial power system solvers. The distribution system is evolving rapidly with high proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs); these are not guaranteed to proliferate in a balanced manner and uncertainty resulting due to these DERs is well acknowledged. These uncertainties cannot be captured or visualized without representing the distribution system in detail along with the transmission system. We show the impact of proliferation of DERs in various 3-phase proportions on voltage stability margin through T&D co-simulation. We also study the impact of volt/VAR control on voltage stability margin. This analysis is only possible by representing the distribution system in detail through T&D co-simulation. Higher percentage of net-load unbalance (NLU) in distribution system aggravates the voltage stability margin of the distribution system, which can further negatively influence the overall voltage stability margin of the system. Partial discharge (PD) detection is a fundamental tool for the design and diagnosis of insulation systems, particularly organic materials that must operate throughout their life without PD. While the methods for PD measurements under sinusoidal supply voltage are well-established, the same does not hold under repetitive-pulse voltage waveforms, such as those provided by inverters. Electromagnetic noise generated by electronic switch commutation in inverters can overlap with PD pulses, making it difficult to measure, separate from noise, and identify PD. This is particularly more cumbersome when fast rise-time switches are employed. To address these issues, this paper investigates methods to detect PD pulses on enameled wires under repetitive impulsive voltages with different rise times of 60, 500, and 1000 ns, proposing techniques which allow separation of PD from noise even when they overlap in time and frequency domains. This paper employs a time-domain approach using standard deviation curve acquired from a set of measurements to discriminate PD from repetitive commutation disturbance. These techniques can be implemented to achieve unsupervised noise rejection, which would be an important goal for both offline and online PD testing. The widespread application of nonlinear power electronic devices in residential loads has resulted in significant harmonic distortions. Harmonic source modeling is of great importance since it is a prerequisite to estimate the harmonic pollution. In this paper, a dynamic harmonic coupled matrix model (HCMM) is proposed for the nonlinear home appliances. This model is adaptive to the load supply voltage conditions; therefore, the dynamic harmonic generating characteristics of nonlinear home appliances can be demonstrated by the proposed HCMM. Moreover, the HCMM derivation process is based on measurement, independent of the load equivalent circuit, which makes the proposed method most suitable for nonlinear home appliances with unknown circuit topologies. The widely linear complex partial least squares method, which has a fast speed and high robustness, is used to estimate the HCMM. A procedure to establish the HCMM for multistate home appliances is also proposed in this paper. Lab experiments were performed to verify the accuracy and validity of the proposed methodology. DC shipboard power systems have been considered as a promising solution for stricter environmental regulations on ships due to their main benefits in fuel savings with variable speed engines and easy integration of energy storage systems. In order to employ the dc solution in the shipboard power systems, the dc power systems have to be protected from a system fault with protection selectivity to minimize impacts of the fault or to avoid other undesirable situations in the system. For low-voltage dc shipboard power systems, a three-level protection has been proposed: 1) fast action (first)—bus separation by solid-state dc bus-tie switch; 2) medium action (second)—feeder protection by high-speed fuse; and 3) slow action (third)—generator–rectifier fault controls. This paper proposes a new method by means of additional bus capacitance added in main dc buses to help reliable operation of the three-level protection. The principle of the proposed method is introduced and the sizing of the additional bus capacitance is addressed in this paper. With the modeling of the dc shipboard power systems, the analyses of voltage drops for the bus separation failure and fault clearing time for the feeder protection are carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method not only mitigates the voltage drop for the bus separation failure, but also achieves the selectivity and the sensitivity for the feeder protection. This paper deals with the high accurate current set-points solution for interior permanent-magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) in wide-speed range applications. Considering voltage and current constraints, the operating regions can be divided into maximum torque per ampere, maximum current, field weakening, and maximum torque per voltage regions, which requires solving different nonlinear functions in real time to obtain optimal current set-points. Traditional methods including curve-fitting methods and polynomial approximation (PA) methods are not easy to obtain these solutions, especially involving magnetic saturation problems. In this paper, Newton–Raphson algorithm for improving the control accuracy of the current set-points is proposed. Meanwhile, parameters influence including magnetic saturation and resistive voltage drop is fully investigated. Compared with PA method, the proposed method is able to converge to accurate solutions in few numbers of iterations with reduced execution time, which can be easily implemented on an off-the-shelf digital signal processor. Due to different solar radiation, temperature, and other reasons of modules in the three-phase cascaded H-bridge (CHB) photovoltaic (PV) inverter, the output power among PV modules will be unequal and lead to unbalanced grid currents, which cannot meet the requirements of grid codes. On the other hand, the second-order voltage ripple is aroused in the dc-link capacitor since each phase-leg of the CHB inverter is made up of a single-phase inverter. Concerning these two issues, this paper proposes an optimized third harmonic injection method based on fundamental frequency zero sequence injection (FFZSI), which is a conventional method to handle the slight power imbalance problem. In this paper, the FFZSI is adopted to redistribute the power among three phases, and then the third harmonic is injected into the three-phase combined reference waveforms according to the two requirements: all modules are free from overmodulation and the dc-link voltage fluctuation is mostly reduced. Therefore, the proposed method can reduce the dc-link voltage fluctuation and extend the power balance range of FFZSI at the same time. A novel single-phase transformerless dual-mode interleaved multilevel inverter (DMIMI) is proposed in this paper, which can inject a highly sinusoidal ac current to the grid even with the input dc voltage less than the peak grid voltage. Furthermore, dead-beat controllers are developed to directly calculate the optimal duty cycles in a digital control platform. As compared to the traditional dual-mode multilevel approaches, the DMIMI offers high efficiency, less number of components conducting simultaneously in each operation mode, and the capability of reactive power exchange. This paper presents the theoretical analysis and the experimental results obtained from a 1-kW prototype. A new reference resistive-capacitive voltage divider is presented in this paper, operating in dc and ac from 10 to 200 kHz. The ratio error is lower than 0.1% and the phase error is lower than $400~\mu $ rad (1.375’) at 100 kHz. The divider is stable and repeatable. The scale factor (SF) and the phase error repeatability, tested in 24-h continuous measurements repeated during 15 weeks, show an SF variation lower than 80 ppm and a phase error variation lower than 20 $\mu $ rad. This allows one to define a calibration matrix of the device bringing its relative measurement uncertainty lower than $0.5 \cdot 10^{-3}$. The divider calibration has been obtained with a step-up method, which could improve traceability in many laboratories and is described in this paper. The divider can be embedded in a calibration chain to test the accuracy of voltage transducers in the measurement of the ac voltage ripple, in the presence of a significant dc component, as it occurs in many power electronic systems. The voltage calibration chain is based on the use of the reference divider and a voltage injector, the secondary of which is placed in series with a stable dc source. By means of this calibration system, one of the best commercial voltage transducers on the market has been analyzed. This paper also highlights how the proposed voltage calibration chain could be used in perspective in a phantom power system for the development of a dc plus ac power standard. An ion-flow field is very important for the design of an HVDC transmission line. Due to the space ions resulting from corona discharge, there are few practical methods to measure the space electric fields around HVDC transmission lines. In this paper, a compensation method is presented to measure the space potential in the ion-flow field. The space potential can be obtained by applying an adjustable voltage source to a suspended conductor, increasing the voltage step-by-step and measuring the current flowing through the voltage source or the ground-level ion current density under the suspended conductor. When the current is equal to zero or the ground-level ion current density is equal to that without the suspended conductor, the output voltage of the voltage source is the space potential to be measured. The paper first introduces the principle of the measurement method. Then, the feasibility of the method is testified on unipolar and bipolar reduced-scale models.
