The new Fifth generation (5G) of wireless communications and beyond 5G (B5G) networks are required to provide connectivity for massive number of devices at high speed and low latency. Within this context, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been involved and emerged in recent research since it is considered as an enabling technology for 5G and B5G networks. NOMA allows several users to share the same resources of time and frequency, making it an excellent candidate to provide impressively large connectivity with high spectral efficiency. In this paper, we study the performance of NOMA systems assuming independent but not necessarily to be identical $N$ -Nakagami-m multipath fading channels. This channel model subsumes the double Nakagami-m, which was investigated in the context of intervehicular communications and keyhole multiple input multiple output systems, as special cases. To this end, we derive exact analytical and asymptotic expressions for the probability density function of the overall signal to noise ratio, system capacity, and the pairwise error probability (PEP) for each user. The efficiency of link adaptation in wireless communications relies greatly on the accuracy of channel knowledge and transmission mode selection. In this paper, a novel deep learning based link adaptation framework is proposed for the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with compressed-sensing-assisted index modulation, termed as OFDM-CSIM, communicating over millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels. To achieve link adaptation, a novel multi-layer sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm is proposed for accurately and instantaneously providing the required channel state information. Meanwhile, a deep neural networks (DNN)-assisted adaptive modulation algorithm is proposed to choose the best possible transmission mode to maximize the achievable throughput. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-layer SBL algorithm enables more accurate channel estimation than the conventional techniques. The DNN-based adaptive modulator is capable of achieving a higher throughput than the learning-assisted solution based on the $k$ nearest neighbor ($k$ -NN) algorithm, and also the classic average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based solutions. Moreover, analysis shows that both the multi-layer SBL algorithm and the DNN-assisted adaptive modulator achieve better performance than their respective conventional counterparts while at a significantly lower computational complexity cost. We consider performance enhancement of asymmetrically-clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) and related optical OFDM schemes, which are variations of OFDM in intensity-modulated optical wireless communications. Unlike most existing studies on specific designs of improved receivers, this paper investigates information theoretic limits of all possible receivers. For independent and identically distributed (IID) complex Gaussian inputs, we obtain an exact characterization of information rate of ACO-OFDM with improved receivers for all SNRs. It is proved that the high-SNR gain of improved receivers asymptotically achieve 1/4 bits per channel use, which is equivalent to 3 dB in electrical SNR or 1.5 dB in optical SNR; as the SNR decreases, the maximum achievable SNR gain of improved receivers decreases monotonically to a non-zero low-SNR limit, corresponding to an information rate gain of 36.3%. For practically used constellations, we derive an upper bound on the gain of improved receivers. Numerical results demonstrate that the upper bound can be approached to within 1 dB in optical SNR by combining existing improved receivers and coded modulation. We also show that our information theoretic analyses can be extended to Flip-OFDM and PAM-DMT. This paper investigates the performance of vertical underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems in the presence of air bubbles and temperature gradients. We consider a generalized UWOC channel model that contains $N$ layers, each having the same distribution but with different parameters to consider the vertically inhomogeneous nature of the underwater environment. To capture the effects of air bubbles and temperature gradients on channel statistics, we model each layer with a mixture exponential-generalized Gamma distribution. A closed-form probability density function (PDF) is presented for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio. Based on the PDF, we derive the average bit-error-rate (BER) and the ergodic capacity. Moreover, we provide asymptotic BER and ergodic capacity results in simple forms. In this paper, we propose a cost-efficient beamforming optimization algorithm for multi-user wireless communication systems associated with the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). From the baseline successive refinement algorithm, which gives a sub-optimal solution for the power minimization problem under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) constraint at each user, several optimization techniques are proposed to reduce the computation complexity while maintaining the algorithm-level performance. To reduce the number of required multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations, we first simplify the complicated matrix inversion by utilizing the channel hardening effect. We also present the two-phase refinement process for the group-level optimization of phase-shift elements, further relaxing the computation complexity as well as the processing latency. Applying the proposed optimization techniques, as a result, numerical results show that the fully-optimized algorithm can reduce the computational costs by up to 89.4% while showing less than 1 dB power loss, leading to the practical solution for the next-generation IRS-aided communication. In this paper, we investigate the performance of an RIS-aided wireless communication system subject to outdated channel state information that may operate in both the near- and far-field regions. In particular, we take two RIS deployment strategies into consideration: (i) the centralized deployment, where all the reflecting elements are installed on a single RIS and (ii) the distributed deployment, where the same number of reflecting elements are placed on multiple RISs. For both deployment strategies, we derive accurate closed-form approximations for the ergodic capacity, and we introduce tight upper and lower bounds for the ergodic capacity to obtain useful design insights. From this analysis, we unveil that an increase of the transmit power, the Rician- $K$ factor, the accuracy of the channel state information and the number of reflecting elements help improve the system performance. Moreover, we prove that the centralized RIS-aided deployment may achieve a higher ergodic capacity as compared with the distributed RIS-aided deployment when the RIS is located near the base station or near the user. In different setups, on the other hand, we prove that the distributed deployment outperforms the centralized deployment. Finally, the analytical results are verified by using Monte Carlo simulations. Optical wireless communication (OWC) over atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors is a well-studied topic. Still, there is limited research on signal fading due to random fog in an outdoor environment for terrestrial wireless communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence with a negligible line-of-sight (LOS) direct link. We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) pointing errors, random fog with Gamma distributed attenuation coefficient, double generalized gamma (DGG) atmospheric turbulence, and asymmetrical distance between the source and destination. We develop density and distribution functions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence (FPT) channel and distribution function for the combined channel with random fog and pointing errors (FP). Using the derived statistical results, we present analytical expressions of the outage probability, average SNR, ergodic rate, and average bit error rate (BER) for both FP and FPT channels in terms of OWC system parameters. We also develop simplified and asymptotic performance analysis to provide insight on the system behavior analytically under various practically relevant scenarios. We demonstrate the mutual effects of channel impairments and pointing errors on the OWC performance, and show that the relaying system provides significant performance improvement compared with the direct transmissions, especially when pointing errors and fog becomes more pronounced. Recent research on joint source channel coding (JSCC) for wireless communications has achieved great success owing to the employment of deep learning (DL). However, the existing work on DL based JSCC usually trains the designed network to operate under a specific signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, without taking into account that the SNR level during the deployment stage may differ from that during the training stage. A number of networks are required to cover the scenario with a broad range of SNRs, which is computational inefficiency (in the training stage) and requires large storage. To overcome these drawbacks our paper proposes a novel method called Attention DL based JSCC (ADJSCC) that can successfully operate with different SNR levels during transmission. This design is inspired by the resource assignment strategy in traditional JSCC, which dynamically adjusts the compression ratio in source coding and the channel coding rate according to the channel SNR. This is achieved by resorting to attention mechanisms because these are able to allocate computing resources to more critical tasks. Instead of applying the resource allocation strategy in traditional JSCC, the ADJSCC uses the channel-wise soft attention to scaling features according to SNR conditions. We compare the ADJSCC method with the state-of-the-art DL based JSCC method through extensive experiments to demonstrate its adaptability, robustness and versatility. A hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay network (HSTRN) has been envisioned as a promising communication architecture for future wireless communications, which can prominently reduce the impact of shadow fading and expand service coverage. In this paper, we conduct theoretical performance analysis for a dual-hop communication system, consisting of multiple relays and multiple users in the HSTRN with the amplify-and-forward protocol. For the shadowing effect and the multipath effect, we introduce the shadowed-Rician distribution and Nakagami- $m$ fading to characterize the channel models for the satellite-relay and the relay-user links, respectively. Additionally, the opportunistic scheduling scheme is employed, where the optimal relay and the optimal user are selected from the alternative nodes with the maximum instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio. Thereafter, the analytical expressions including ergodic capacity and average symbol error rate (SER) are derived. More specifically, we also present the asymptotic behavior of the average SER at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SRN) regime. The theoretical analysis is validated by the numerical results. Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) has attracted considerable attention because of its potential applications in factory automation, automated driving, and telesurgery anticipated for the era of the sixth-Generation (6G) networks. In URLLC with random channel gains and a hard delay constraint, the scheduling of backlogged queues and finite blocklength coding in the physical layer will make it very challenging to specify its performance limits. In this paper, we focus our attention on the asymptotic cross-layer analysis of URLLC when the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) is sufficiently high. More specifically, we find that a fundamental tradeoff exists among the service capability, latency, and error probability in the high SNR regime, which is characterized by a gain conservation equation. The main result of this work reveals that the sum of our defined service rate gain, real-time gain, and reliability gain is equal to one under the optimal policy. This paper studies the integration of the newly-emerged intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technology into non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs). We consider two WPCNs which communicate with a common hybrid access point (HAP), where there exists two types of devices in each WPCN, namely information receiving device (IRD) and harvest-then-transmit device (HTTD). Downlink communication from the HAP to IRDs, downlink energy transfer (ET) from the HAP to HTTDs, and uplink information transmission (IT) from the HTTDs to the HAP are assisted by two IRSs, one in each WPCN. Under this setup, we propose efficient algorithms to optimize reflection coefficients, beamforming vectors, and resource allocation for the sake of uplink sum-rate maximization, taking into account the minimum rate requirement at the IRDs. Deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as flying base stations to provide specific geographical area with air-to-ground wireless communications is expected to increase dramatically in the coming decades, owing to its flexibility, mobility and autonomy. Moreover, mobile edge computing (MEC) promises significant reduction in latency by caching popular contents at the mobile edge. In this paper, we propose a method to apply mobile edge caching on UAVs in wireless communication systems. By investigating the user request preference with the aid of latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), the caching strategy can be optimized. In the proposed system, we consider the design of intelligent caching strategies when a number of UAVs are deployed to serve ground users, where each UAV has a limited storage capacity for caching useful user contents. We use LDA to extract the user request preferences in order to intelligently cache data in the UAVs, while we utilize $k$ -means clustering to classify users and to help deploy UAVs. Besides, we consider three user-UAV association criteria, namely the user received signal to noise ratio (SNR), user preferences and the delay. Our simulation results show that, when compared to random caching, the average caching efficiency could be significantly improved from $\text{50}\%$ to $\text{70}\%$ , while the latency of our proposed system can also be greatly reduced. Channel estimation is challenging for the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communications. Since the number of coefficients of the cascaded channel among the base station (BS), the RIS, and the user equipment (UE), is the product of the number of BS antennas, the number of RIS elements, and the number of UEs, the pilot overhead can be prohibitively high. In this paper, we propose a two-timescale channel estimation framework to exploit the property that the BS-RIS channel is high-dimensional but quasi-static, while the RIS-UE channel is mobile but low-dimensional. Specifically, to estimate the quasi-static BS-RIS channel, we propose a dual-link pilot transmission scheme, where the BS transmits downlink pilots and receives uplink pilots reflected by the RIS. Then, we propose a coordinate descent-based algorithm to recover the BS-RIS channel. Since the quasi-static BS-RIS channel is estimated less frequently than the mobile channel is, the average pilot overhead can be reduced from a long-term perspective. Although the mobile RIS-UE channel has to be frequently estimated in a small timescale, the associated pilot overhead is low thanks to its low dimension. In order to satisfy the requirement of extremely high data rate in traffic hotspot regions, millimeter wave (mmWave) has attracted significant attention in wireless communication networks. While the coverage performance of mmWave networks based on the distribution of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) has been widely studied, it provides only very limited information on the link reliability. In this paper, we provide a fine-grained performance analysis of the mmWave networks with hotspots. Specifically, we first establish a general and tractable framework to investigate the performance of mmWave networks using the Poisson cluster process integrated with several features of the mmWave band. Both open and closed association strategies are considered. To show what fraction of users in the networks achieves target reliability when the SINR is given, we derive the tier association probability and the moments of the conditional SINR distribution, based on which the exact meta distributions of SINR are given. Interestingly, in clustered mmWave networks, the widely used standard and generalized beta approximations do not work well when the blockage effect is severe. To resolve this issue, we provide a modified approximation by scaling the standard beta distribution, which is shown to be closer to the exact results. We conduct extensive simulations to study the impact of mmWave and deployment features on the performance of clustered mmWave networks. Numerical results reveal that the optimal scattering variance of mmWave base stations scales with the cluster size to maximize the number of concurrent reliable links, and increasing the antenna directivity results in more reliable communications than elevating the transmit power of mmWave base stations. When the wireless communication system evolves to massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the system becomes more and more complex. Hybrid beamforming architecture provides excellent trade-off between the system performance and the complexity for the massive MIMO system. Hybrid beamforming architecture can be classified as fully-connected (FC) and sub-connected (SC) architecture. Existing studies on the system performance comparison of the two architectures are limited. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the FC and SC architecture in the multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) system. We derive the closed-form sum rate of two architectures under the same total transmission power constraint. From the results, we conclude that the system performance of FC architecture is always better than that of SC architecture. When the number of users is small or the signal noise ratio (SNR) is low, the performance difference between the FC and SC architecture is small. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deemed as a promising solution to improve the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communications cost-effectively. In this paper, we consider a wireless network where multiple base stations (BSs) serve their respective users with the aid of distributed IRSs in the downlink communication. Specifically, each IRS assists in the transmission from its associated BS to user via passive beamforming, while in the meantime, it also randomly scatters the signals from other co-channel BSs, thus resulting in additional signal as well as interference paths in the network. As such, a new IRS-user/BS association problem arises pertaining to optimally balance the passive beamforming gains from all IRSs among different BS-user communication links. To address this new problem, we first derive a tractable lower bound of the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver of each user, termed average-signal-to-average-interference-plus-noise ratio (ASAINR), based on which two ASAINR balancing problems are formulated to maximize the minimum ASAINR among all users by optimizing the IRS-user associations without and with BS transmit power control, respectively. We also characterize the scaling behavior of user ASAINRs with the increasing number of IRS reflecting elements to investigate the different effects of IRS-reflected signal versus interference power. Moreover, to solve the two ASAINR balancing problems that are both non-convex optimization problems, we propose an optimal solution to the problem without BS power control and low-complexity suboptimal solutions to both problems by applying the branch-and-bound method and exploiting new properties of the IRS-user associations, respectively. We consider two users A and B wanting to exchange their messages MA and MB via a relay in a wireless communication network. To this aim, we have two methods: direct forward (DF) and computation and forward (CAF). In the first method, after an orthogonal multiple access (OMA) or non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) phase, the receiver decodes the two messages. In the second method, after a NOMA phase, the receiver decodes only the (modulo) sum. In the latter case the capacity region (computation region) is not known. This paper compares the two methods. To such aim, we propose a unified coding framework and identify a lower bound of achievable computation rates. We consider three constellations for the symmetric two-user Gaussian channel with Eisenstein constellation showing highest performance. We also show that a minimum signal-to-noise ratio is required for our CAF method to outperform DF, and we obtain the numerical values of such minimum ratios for the three constellations. Finally, we show achievability of our bounds, which is proved to require affine codes for computation, which has not been proved before. In this paper, a mixture Gamma shadowed (MGS) model is proposed as a unified composite distribution via representing the shadowing impact by an inverse Nakagami- $m$. The exact expression and the asymptotic behaviour at high average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime of the fundamental statistics of a MGS distribution are derived first. These statistics are then applied to analyze the performance of the wireless communication systems over double shadowed $\kappa$ - $\mu$ fading channels. In particular, the outage probability (OP), average bit error probability (ABEP), average channel capacity (ACC), effective capacity (EC) and average area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) of energy detection (ED) are provided.
