In this paper, a new structure of nonisolated boost dc–dc converters based on voltage-lift technique is proposed. In comparison with conventional nonisolated boost dc–dc converters, the proposed converter generates higher voltage gain. In this paper, the relations between voltage and current of all elements in continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode are calculated as well as voltage gain in each mode. Then, the critical inductance and stress of switch current are extracted. Finally, the validity of given theories is examined by using the experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Superconducting pulsed-power supply (SPPS) provides an efficient method for both high-density inductive energy storage and high current pulse generation. An SPPS consisting of eight high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power transformer (HTSPPT) modules with XRAM methodology was designed and simulated in preliminary studies. It recycled the leakage flux energy and reduced the voltage across the opening switch with a capacitor in primary. However, the SPPS with XRAM methodology has two problems. The first one is that it can provide high pulse amplitude, but cannot provide enough width. The other one is that the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy is relatively large, which cuts down the overall system energy density. This paper proposes a modified topology of SPPS with capacitor reuse methodology. Multiple HTSPPT modules are divided into several groups. Each group shares the same capacitor. The procedure of the modified SPPS is presented in detail. A 270-kJ SPPS with capacitor reuse methodology is designed and simulated to illustrate the modified topology. With the load parameters of a small railgun, the peak value of the load current is 207.15 kA and the pulse half-height width is 5.56 ms, the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy is 11%. This paper is aimed at finding the effect of varying inductive energy storage systems’ (IESSs) inductance on resistance of an electrically exploded conductor-based opening switch and profile of current transferred into load, which has not yet been fully understood. Based on experimental results obtained, it is observed that when the inductance of IESS is varied, the magnitude of load current changes so as to conform to the magnetic flux conservation law but its rise time remains unchanged. Resistance of the opening switch and energy deposited in it has been estimated using recorded voltage and current waveforms. It has been found that with increasing inductance of IESS, the resistance of switch increases, whereas energy deposited in it decreases. Using these estimated values of energy, a possible explanation of observed behavior in resistance is presented. Effect of a mismatch between the inductance of IESS and load is seen to only affect the energy transfer efficiency or magnitude of load current but not its rise time emphasizing the novel finding that for a given load, the rise time of load current is independent of the inductance of IESS. Paralleled pulse-forming units (PFUs) with different triggering delays might be a paramagnetic way for generating flat-topped current wave for electromagnetic launch. Many researchers have reported that multiple capacitive storage PFUs were implemented such current waves in laboratories. However, due to its low energy density, the applications of the capacitive pulsed-power supplies are limited. Since the inductor has advantages in energy density, the inductor pulsed-power supply becomes one of the hottest topics recently. The slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid meat grinder with inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices proposed by Tsinghua University has demonstrated its advantage and applicability recently. Using this kind of topology, this paper proposes the design of an inductive storage PFU with a stored energy of 100-kJ. The maximum load current reaches to 50 kA and its pulsewidth is at least 5 ms. The optimized inductive storage PFU shows superiority in contrast to the capacitive storage PFU with the same energy. Slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder circuit, which was proposed by the Institute for Advanced Technology, added a capacitor into the traditional meat grinder circuit. Even though its energy density is slightly less than the corresponding pure inductance system, it can reduce the voltage across the opening switch and maintain the high multiplication factor of the opening current. The performance of the STRETCH meat grinder circuit depends on multiple parameters. The inductance ratio ( n=L1 / L2) and the capacitance (C) are the two vital factors, which have a crucial influence on the system performance, such as the voltage over the opening switch ( V_{\rm Sopm}) , the current multiplication factor ( m$ ), and the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy ( $\eta )$ . Thorough studies have been carried out in this paper on the relationship between the above two factors and the three performance criteria. This paper also discusses and analyzes the chosen of the key parameters ( $n$ and $C$ ) for a single-stage STRETCH meat grinder with 2-mH total inductance, which is made up of two serial coils with 0.95 coupling factor. The opening current of the main switch is 1 kA, which constitutes a 1-kJ inductive pulsed-power supply. It fully takes the advantage of the STRETCH meat grinder topology, intensifies the study of the inductive pulsed-power supply with higher energies, and is easy to be utilized for practical application. Quasi-square wave mode with zero voltage switching (QSW-ZVS) is an operation mode in which the switching losses can be minimized. However, a large inductance current ripple is needed in this mode, which limits the maximum attainable power of the topology. A possible way to increase the power managed by a QSW-ZVS mode converter is to use a modular converter. An input parallel output parallel (IPOP) arrangement, in which the current can be shared among the modules, can increase the total power proportionally to the number of modules. This paper addresses two main proposals. The first one is a master–slave technique to extend the QSW-ZVS mode to an IPOP modular converter, achieving an interleaved solution which minimizes the total input current ripple and assures the current balance among the modules. The second one is a comparison of four different control techniques applied to the IPOP modular converter to improve the overall efficiency at light to medium load: balanced master–slave technique, master–slave with phase-shedding, asymmetrical master–slave, and burst mode (or hysteretic control). These four strategies are theoretically analyzed, experimentally validated and compared using a 150–400 V 2 kW modular IPOP prototype made up of four synchronous boost converter operating in QSW-ZVS mode. A nonlinear pulse width modulation-controlled single-phase boost mode photovoltaic grid-connected inverter with limited storage inductance current is proposed in this paper. The circuit topology, control strategy, steady-state principle characteristic, and design criterion for the key circuit parameters of this kind of inverter are investigated in depth, and important conclusions are obtained. The inverter's regenerating energy duty ratio 1–D which decreases with the decline of the grid-connected voltage is real time adapted by sampling and feeding back the inverting bridge modulation current, and the average value of the modulation current in each switching cycle tracks the reference sinusoidal signal to get high-quality grid-connected current. The active control of the energy storage inductance current and the balance of the voltage step-up ratio are realized by adding a bypass switch connected in parallel with the energy storage inductance and using two kinds of switching pattern namely boost pattern and freewheeling pattern. The superconducting inductive pulsed-power supply (SPPS) circuit consists of a high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power transformer (HTSPPT) and an auxiliary capacitor. The electrical losses and the power of the primary source can be cut down with the superconducting inductive energy storage. Although its energy density is slightly less than a purely superconducting inductive system, it can reduce the maximum voltage of the opening switch by the capacitor and achieve a high degree of current amplification factor. However, during the discharge process, the magnetic leakage flux energy stored in the primary of the HTSPPT requires the capacitor to have a certain capacity. The higher the ratio of the capacitive stored energy over the total inductive stored energy, the more the dominant position of inductive energy storage reduces. The current amplification factor ( \gamma ), the maximum voltage of the opening switch ( V_{S\max } ), and the ratio of capacitive stored energy ( \eta ) are the three main properties of the SPPS circuit, which depends on several intertwined critical parameters, such as the inductance ratio n = L2 /( L2+LL ) and the capacitance ( $C_{{\mathbf {1}}}$ ). This paper studies the influence of the critical parameters on the main circuit performance with a 1-kJ SPPS system. The detailed selection method of the critical parameters for the specific system is also discussed with a coupling coefficient of 0.95. Renewable sources like solar photovoltaic (PV) and fuel cell stack are preferred to be operated at low voltages. For applications such as grid-tied systems, this necessitates high voltage boosting resulting in efficiency reduction. To handle this issue, this paper proposes a novel high voltage gain, high-efficiency dc–dc converter based on coupled inductor, intermediate capacitor, and leakage energy recovery scheme. The input energy acquired from the source is first stored in the magnetic field of coupled inductor and intermediate capacitor in a lossless manner. In subsequent stages, it is passed on to the output section for load consumption. A passive clamp network around the primary inductor ensures the recovery of energy trapped in the leakage inductance, leading to drastic improvement in the voltage gain and efficiency of the system. Exorbitant duty cycle values are not required for high voltage gain, which prevents problems such as diode reverse recovery. Presence of a passive clamp network causes reduced voltage stress on the switch. This enables the use of low voltage rating switch (with low “on-state” resistance), improving the overall efficiency of the system. This paper describes a compact high storage density inductive–capacitive storage module. The module is based on high-power opening switches using inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices commutation principle and a high storage density Brooks inductor. These opening switches, being able to switch-OFF pulse currents up to 14.5 kA by the counter-current subcircuit, make use of the general property of a standard high-power thyristors impedance transition from closing state to blocking state. The experimental results show that with the primary capacitor and counter-current commutation subcircuit charged voltage 3 and 2.5 kV, respectively, the charged current of the Brooks-type inductor is about 14.5 kA, with a charged time of about 4.5 ms. The output peak current of the inductive storage module is about 21 kA. The total stored energy is about 54.9 kJ while the energy density of the inductor is approximately 6.69 MJ/ \textm^3 , which is not including the primary storage and commutation unit. This paper targets photovoltaic microinverters (MIVs) with integrated battery storage. The dual-active-bridge (DAB) topology provides bidirectional power flow; however, it generally suffers from poor efficiency and limited regulation accuracy at low power. It is shown that by modifying one switch, the DAB converter can operate as a two-transistor flyback to resolve these two issues. In addition, the dc-link voltage in the two-stage MIV can be dynamically adjusted for optimal performance in DAB mode. The proposed dual-mode control scheme is demonstrated experimentally on a 100-W prototype, with up to 8% increase in converter efficiency at low power. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper provides analysis of experiments aimed at defining the capabilities of plasma opening switch (POS) for energy transfer to a load of inductance comparable with the inductance of the energy store vacuum section. The analysis is performed using the substantiated technique that allows quantitative estimation of the POS efficiency. Under the same conditions with a conduction current of ∼1 MA and POS voltage of ∼1 MV, the energy transferred to the load depends strongly on the transmission line design. When the electrode gap in the line is ∼1 cm, the energy delivered to the load is ∼40 kJ. Increasing the gap to ∼4-cm increases this energy to ∼100 kJ. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper introduces a practical modification of the buck converter and a complementary controller that are well suited for point of load applications with highly dynamic loads. The presented flyback-transformer-based buck (FTBB) converter has faster transient response than the conventional buck, allowing for a reduction in the output capacitance without penalty in the size of the magnetic core. During heavy-to-light load transients, the FTBB converter also recycles excess energy stored in the magnetic component, providing a useful energy savings mechanism. In this modification, the conventional buck inductor is replaced with the primary winding of the flyback transformer, an extra switch, and a set of small auxiliary switches on the secondary side. During heavy-to-light load transients, the inductor current is steered away from the output capacitor to the input port, achieving both energy recycling and savings due to reduced voltage overshoots. The light-to-heavy transient response is improved by reducing the equivalent inductance of the primary transformer winding to its leakage value. A mixed-signal current-programmed mode controller regulates operation of the converter. The controller provides minimum output voltage deviation and ensures seamless transitions between different operating modes. The performance of the FTBB converter is verified with a 6-to-1-V, 3-W, 390-kHz experimental prototype. In comparison with an equivalent buck converter, the experimental system has about three times smaller maximum output voltage deviation, allowing for the same output capacitor reduction and, for frequently changing loads, about 7% decrease in power losses. This paper details the testing of a commercially available gate turn-off thyristor (GTO) for application in inductive-store power supplies. GTOs have been used as a component of inductive-store systems directly and as part of compound switches. These GTOs are generally available commercially and typically have extensive datasheets. However, the inductive-store application differs significantly from conventional switching applications, which significantly reduces the utility of the datasheets; GTOs are typically used at 100–1000 Hz in a fairly continuous manner, whereas in an inductive-store system, a GTO may be conducting for a relatively long time before doing a single turn off. This paper presents the design and implementation of a three-phase unity-power-factor single-stage ac–dc converter based on an interleaved flyback topology. The primary market target of the converter is within the telecommunications industry where it supplies high-quality dc power to the telecom loads and performs high-capacity battery charging while providing zero harmonic emission and unity power factor to the utility grid. The main design objective is to produce the lowest cost within a small-size system. The study includes mathematical analysis and simulation steps where the optimum number of cells to be interleaved and the associated phase shifts among the cells are determined while the emphasis being on the design of a perfectly coupled flyback transformer. Design of a transformer with the lowest leakage inductance and selection of components providing the lowest parasitic effects are critical for obtaining high efficiency and good performance. After the design is verified through simulation studies that uses Simulink and piecewise linear electrical circuit simulation model (PLECS) of the converter, a full-scale prototype is implemented to evaluate the performance of the design.
