Voltage rise caused by high levels of distributed generation is manifesting as voltage regulation challenges for many electricity network service providers. In this environment it would be ideal to reduce supply voltage magnitudes, however, many network operators are hesitant to do so due to concerns related to consumer appliance performance at reduced supply voltage magnitudes. Voltage regulation requirements are defined by network standards and network service providers must ensure voltages remain within specified limits. Through an evaluation of domestic appliance performance when supplied at various voltage magnitudes, this paper examines the impact of varying voltage levels on residential appliances. Equipment energy demand, operation and actuation were monitored for each applied voltage magnitude. While no equipment failures were recorded, appliance behaviour varied significantly with applied voltage magnitude. Individual appliance conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factors have also been established. The results highlight the importance of good voltage regulation and provide substantiated appliance performance figures for future studies. The outcomes of this paper allow electricity network service providers to understand the implications of supply voltage magnitude on domestic appliance performance, whether it be understating of the impact of higher voltage magnitudes caused by distributed generation or implications of reducing voltage magnitudes to provide headroom for distributed generation integration. Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. This paper presents the three-phase impulse overvoltage measured at the terminal of a 10 kV distribution line when the impulse current was injected into the phase conductor of the distribution line. The overvoltage observation station was installed at the terminal of the line to record the three-phase overvoltage waveforms. It is shown that the struck phase overvoltage consists of three components including the negative pulse, the stage of residual voltage maintenance and the overshoot oscillation part. The observed negative peak values of the struck phase overvoltage range from −85.4 kV to −96.0 kV in three different injected impulse levels at 90,120,150 kV charging voltage. The duration of residual voltage depends on the duration time of injected current. Furthermore, there is a strong positive relationship between the oscillation amplitude of the struck phase overvoltage and the injected current amplitude. The peak amplitudes of three-phase overvoltage always have the following magnitude relationship: struck phase C > induced phase B > induced phase A. The voltage coupling coefficients of induced phases will not exceed 0.4. The test method proposed in this paper will be helpful to the research on the lightning overvoltage response characteristics of the distribution line and the protection analysis of arresters. The paper addresses an improved inner current reference calculation to be employed in the control of modular multilevel converters operating during either balanced or unbalanced conditions. The suggested reference calculation is derived based on the AC and DC additive and differential voltage components applied to the upper and lower arms of the converter. In addition, the impacts caused not only by the AC network’s impedances but also by the MMC’s arm impedances are also considered during the derivation of the AC additive current reference expressions. Another issue discussed in this article regards that singular voltage conditions, where the positive-sequence component is equal to the negative one, may occur not only in the AC network but also internally (within the converter’s applied voltages). Several different inner current reference calculation methods are compared and their applicability during the former fault conditions is analyzed. The paper presents a detailed formulation of the inner current reference calculation and applies it to different unbalanced AC grid faults where it is shown that the presented approach can be potentially used to maintain the internal energy of the converter balanced during normal and fault conditions. This paper establishes an instantaneous voltage model to illustrate the dynamic characteristics of grid voltage in electromagnetic time scale affected by power-electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with two typical categories of control systems, i.e., power-current cascading control and power synchronization control, exemplified by the STATCOM and virtual synchronous condenser (VSCON) respectively. In this paper, a linearized instantaneous voltage model is firstly established to analyze the impact paths of control loops in the STATCOM and VSCON. Based on the model, the dynamic process of grid voltage is divided into three stages. Various factors on the dynamic process of grid voltage are analyzed, especially cascading control loops prior to the functioning of AC voltage control. Moreover, stiffness characteristic is proposed to evaluate the effects of power electronic interfaced voltage regulatory devices with different control structures. Autonomous power systems with a single power station and a high-voltage (HV) network may be susceptible to overvoltage instability, especially during light-load conditions. Moreover, in low inertia systems, considerable frequency excursions may be observed after disturbances. To deal with voltage and frequency stability problems in such isolated power systems, several measures should be taken, such as rules for adequate automatic voltage control of the synchronous generators and load-tap-changers (LTCs), and/or adequate design of actions applied during emergency system conditions such as reactors switching, and redesigning underfrequency load shedding taking into account overvoltage problems. The effectiveness of the proposed countermeasures against overvoltage instability in autonomous power systems is illustrated in this paper. In 2016, the autonomous power system of the Greek island of Rhodes experienced similar voltage/frequency problems leading to a blackout. This event has been accurately reconstructed in this paper. The application of the suggested countermeasures during the simulation of the 2016 blackout event in Rhodes, further highlighted the effectiveness of these measures, providing a guideline for similar cases. Battery energy storage system (BESS) plays an important role in solving problems in which the intermittency has to be considered while operating distribution network (DN) penetrated with renewable energy. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes a global centralized dispatch model that applies BESS technology to DN with renewable energy source (RES). The method proposed in this paper aims to minimize the power purchase cost considering network active loss cost as well as voltage deviation penalty cost. Later, second-order cone programming (SOCP) method as well as big M method are applied to make the problem tractable. With the advancements of the battery energy storage systems (BESSs), reduction of their manufacturing costs and government subsidies, the BESS uptake is likely to increase rapidly in power distribution networks. This paper investigates the effects of residential BESSs on low-voltage (LV) networks using the actual household load profiles equipped with BESS and solar-photovoltaic (PV) systems. The electricity consumption data collected via smart meters (2200 households with PV/BESS, 1950 households with PV only and 1000 households without a PV or a BESS) at different solar-PV penetration levels and network types are used to simulate real network operating scenarios. A real LV distribution network in Australia is analysed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory under different scenarios, such as, customers with and without a solar-PV/BESS, with a solar-PV but without a BESS, and without a solar-PV, by using both the power flow and quasi-dynamic simulation studies under balanced and the unbalanced network loading conditions. According to the study, customers experience large voltage excursions from solar-PV power exports, which could be resolved by the household BESS, provided that the BESS charging is coordinated with the solar-PV production. Moreover, quasi-dynamic simulation shows that the BESS could reduce the violation of the over-voltage limit during the solar peak hours (midday) by lowering the worst-case feeder voltage by 3%. Finally, extreme-event (high solar PV generation scenario) simulation shows that the implementation of the BESS controller to facilitate charging BESS during afternoon solar-PV export may reduce the negative grid impact and will assist to avoid network upgrades. Electrical equipment of the floating nuclear power plant operates in a long-term vibration environment. Ground faults occur frequently and are often accompanied by arc, a reliable arc suppression algorithm for the generator stator winding is necessary. In this paper, an active arc suppression method is proposed by connecting a controllable voltage source to the generator neutral point. Through regulating the neutral point voltage to be equal in amplitude and opposite in phase to the fault potential, the fault point voltage can be clamped to a low level to achieve arc suppression. Since the generator's phase potential contains certain harmonic components, the controllable voltage source includes fundamental and third-order harmonic components. To accurately calculate the output voltage, online calculation methods for the fault location, fault potential and grounding capacitance are proposed. The accuracy of the fault location method is verified by simulation and dynamic test. Ground faults are the main cause of electrical failure in transmission and distribution systems. In ungrounded distribution networks, it is difficult to detect where a first ground fault has happened as only capacitive currents are available. Also, it is important to trip only the faulty line in order to ensure the system's reliability. Directional residual overcurrent relays are the standard solution for these systems, but their difficult commissioning and high costs make it not trivial. This paper introduces a new selective and directional protection method to determine the faulty line in ungrounded medium voltage networks with three or more feeders. The method evaluates the residual currents in the feeders coupled to the same busbars in combination with a reference current created by the sum of a combination of residual currents of all feeders. Both simulation and laboratory results validate this new method, which is easy to start up, as it does not need previous configurations for its implementation, and it presents an economical solution to this problem. Multilevel converters (MLCs) are pioneers in the field of electrical energy conversion. From the classification of MLCs, modular multilevel converter (MMC) is top-rated due to its attractive structure and performance. The modular nature and no need for isolated DC resources are two significant advantages of this converter. However, the need for many sensors to control its performance is a considerable drawback. In addition, the internal circulating current in the MMC causes losses, decreases efficiency, and increases the voltage ripple of capacitors. This paper proposes combining a new capacitor voltage sorting method and an open-loop controller based on arms energy estimation to control the MMC using two voltage sensors in the arms and one current sensor at the output. The proposed method ensures continuous voltage balancing of the capacitors and removes multiple voltage sensors from sub-modules (SMs). The voltage rise problem due to the reverse power flow is one of the main obstacles to expanding the photovoltaic systems (PVSs) in distribution networks. In this paper, a decentralized control method for coordinated control of on-load tap changer (OLTC) transformers and PV inverters, is proposed for the voltage regulation of radial distribution networks. In this method, the allowable voltage range is divided into several zones, and appropriate corrective actions are adaptively taken according to each zone. To reduce the tension on the OLTC, first, the reactive power capability of the PV inverters is employed for the voltage regulation, and if it is insufficient, OLTC is used as the last solution. In this regard, the unused capacity of PV inverters is utilized for the reactive power compensation, considering the grid codes reactive power requirements. Furthermore, decentralized control based on a signaling method is used for coordination between OLTC and PVSs, which eliminates the need for communication links. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by the simulation results for the IEEE 33-bus distribution network, and the impact of different reactive power control methods on the number of OLTC operation is investigated. With the growing penetration of distributed renewable energy, distributed control approaches are widely utilized in voltage control of active distribution networks (ADNs), suffering from limited applicability for control devices or heavy communication burden. This paper develops an innovative distributed voltage control strategy of ADNs with global sensitivities (DVC-GS), which integrates network information from a global optimization view to coordinate energy storages, PV inverters and the OLTC with little communication and computing time. The global sensitivities of voltage violations across all buses with respect to nodal voltage and active/reactive power injection are formulated to quantify the ability of each controllable resource for alleviating voltage violations in the entire ADN. The back-and-forth communication combined with the modified DistFlow model is newly developed for the real-time update of global sensitivities at each bus with high accuracy and no iteration. Then the coordinated control of various devices is implemented on basis of global sensitivities to effectively ensure voltage security of ADNs. Smart distribution grid with multiple renewable energy sources can experience random voltage fluctuations due to variable generation, which may result in voltage violations. Traditional voltage control algorithms are inadequate to handle fast voltage variations. Therefore, new dynamic control methods are being developed that can significantly benefit from the knowledge of dominant voltage influencer (DVI) nodes. DVI nodes for a particular node of interest refer to nodes that have a relatively high impact on the voltage fluctuations at that node. Conventional power flow-based algorithms to identify DVI nodes are computationally complex, which limits their use in real-time applications. This paper proposes a novel information theoretic voltage influencing score (VIS) that quantifies the voltage influencing capacity of nodes with DERs/active loads in a three phase unbalanced distribution system. VIS is then employed to rank the nodes and identify the DVI set. VIS is derived analytically in a computationally efficient manner and its efficacy to identify DVI nodes is validated using the IEEE 37-node test system. It is shown through experiments that KL divergence and Bhattacharyya distance are effective indicators of DVI nodes with an identifying accuracy of more than 90%. Evaluation of conservation voltage reduction (CVR) factor is critical to peak load reduction, 556 energy conservation, and many CVR-related power system control/optimization strategies. This paper proposes a novel robust CVR factor evaluation method using soft constrained gradient analysis based on time-varying load modeling and real utility field measurements. Firstly, the time-varying ZIP parameter identification is formulated as an over-determinant problem composed of first-order gradient with respect to each coefficient and soft constraints representing temporal correlation of loads in each time step, in order to improve the robustness and smoothness of CVR factor evaluation. Then, problems in time series are coordinated with a sliding window approach. A necessary condition for selecting the smallest window size is proposed and strictly proved to guarantee the existence and uniqueness of the solution of time-varying load modeling problem. Finally, time-varying CVR factors are accurately and robustly calculated with field measurements and the identified load model. Case studies are performed using sufficient field measurements obtained from two real utilities. Unlike existing methods that require a large number of measurements to obtain precise estimation of CVR factor, the proposed method is sufficiently accurate even when the measurements are limited or of low time resolution. Further, the accuracy and robustness of the proposed approach are validated under different types of uncertainties and compared with other existing data processing and CVR factor evaluation methods. Network reconfiguration (NR) has attracted much attention due to its ability to convert conventional distribution networks (DNs) into self-healing grids. This paper proposes a new strategy for real-time voltage regulation (VR) in a reconfigurable DN, whereby optimal feedforward control of distributed generators (DGs) is achieved in coordination with the operation of line switches (SWs). This enables preemptive compensation of upcoming deviations in DN voltages resulting from NR-aided load restoration. A robust optimization problem is formulated using a dynamic analytical model of NR to design the feedforward voltage controllers (FVCs) that minimize voltage deviations with respect to the H∞ norm. Errors in the estimates of DG modeling parameters and load demands are reflected in the design of optimal FVCs via polytopic uncertainty modeling. Small-signal analysis and case studies are conducted, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the optimal FVCs in improving real-time VR when NR is activated for load restoration. The performance of the proposed FVCs is confirmed under various conditions of a self-healing DN,characterized by network islanding and size, parameter errors, SW operations, and communication time delays. A new smooth model is proposed in this paper to eliminate the non-differentiability of several types of limits in power flow models. The proposed smooth model accurately represents power system static models with limits as a continuously differentiable function. Analytic results are developed to show that each solution of the proposed smooth model is arbitrarily close to a solution of the corresponding original power flow model with limits. The proposed smooth model includes a wide range of devices with physical limits, such as generators, transformers, HVDCs, phase shifters, and shunts. In addition, it is shown that every generic static bifurcation in the original model is transformed into a saddle-node bifurcation in the smoothed model. Hence, the search for bifurcations in voltage stability assessment can be greatly simplified. Although Switched Reluctnace Motors have many advantages, vibration is known as their most severe drawback acting as an impediment limiting their widespread use in industrial and domestic applications. Through electromechanical relationships, it is shown that the first-order time derivative of applied phase voltage and second-order time derivative of radial force directly affect the amplitude of generated vibration, especially at the beginning of demagnetization instance. Therefore, a set of criteria is stated in this paper meeting which ensures having low vibration intensity. In this paper, three types of demagnetization voltages are proposed which comprehensively meet the stated criteria. These voltages share the same characteristics contributing to the vibration reduction in Switched Reluctance Motor. Two vital parameters of Synchronous Counter and Coefficient are included in the proposed demagnetization voltages which must be meticulously chosen in order to be effective. Noticeable contribution of the proposed methods to the vibration alleviation is validated through simulation and experimental tests conducted under different working conditions. This paper presents a multi-stage series model predictive control (MS-MPC) for PMSM drives in order to further improve the control performance of MPC. Firstly, the basic principle of conventional MPC is introduced. Then, the multi-stage series MPC is proposed in this paper, in which the cost functions of different prediction instant are adopted to form series control structure. In this method, the current prediction trajectory of one voltage vector is extrapolated to multiple control periods, and the control performances of every voltage vector during multiple control periods are evaluated by multi-stage series cost functions. Additionally, the implementation process of the proposed method is described. Finally, the comparison experiments between the conventional MPC and the proposed method show that the proposed method can effectively reduce the switching frequency under the same control frequency. Commutation failures (CFs) including repetitive CFs (RCFs) are frequently occurring faults in line commutated converter based high voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) systems. Consequently, sending end system will suffer transient voltage disturbances (TVD) with a characteristic of “first reduce then rise and may repeat”. Due to the complex interaction process of TVD, the electromagnetic process behind this phenomenon cannot be easily explained, which imposes great challenges on the development of mitigation strategies. Given this, this paper provides a deep insight into the mechanism and the impact factors of the TVD caused by CFs and RCFs. The numerical relationship between the transmitting power and the TVD is derived. Research results revealed that the transient process after fault can be segmented into five stages. In each stage, the control interactions among HVDC controllers and power interactions at the PCC are analyzed. Besides, we discussed the TVD under RCFs in detail. Several indices are further proposed to facilitate the characterization of the TVD, and main control loops of HVDC that have impacts on the characteristics of TVD are thereby studied. With the emergence of the hybrid multi-infeed high voltage direct current (HMIDC) system, there is complex dynamic interaction between the AC/DC system and converter stations, while the interaction mechanism of the HMIDC system is unclear. For this purpose, this paper establishes the HMIDC linearized model based on the motion equation concept. Then, after decoupling and reconstructing the interaction path of the HMIDC system, the damping coefficients are derived. The AC system strength and voltage source converter (VSC) terminal voltage controller parameters are selected to analyze the impacts on damping coefficients, and the interaction mechanism of the HMIDC system is analyzed. In order to solve the potential instability issue, an additional damping controller in the VSC terminal voltage loop is proposed to enhance the voltage stability of HMIDC system, which is realized by adjusting the reactive power/amplitude coupling damping coefficient. Finally, the RT-LAB-based hardware-in-the-loop experiments verify the accuracy of the interaction mechanism analysis of the HMIDC system and the effectiveness of the proposed controller. In DC distribution networks, the uncertainties of renewable energies and loads cause frequent voltage fluctuations. In this paper, a voltage regulation strategy based on the combined coordination of centralized optimal control (COC) and adaptive droop control (ADC) is proposed for droop-controlled DC distribution networks. In the COC strategy, the operation reference power of voltage source converters (VSCs) is optimized using the bus injection power measurements to improve the voltage profile and balance the power loading rates of different VSCs. The VSC capacity margin constraint is established to ensure that the capacity margin of each VSC is sufficient to cope with the unexpected fluctuation of loads and renewable energies. Then, an ADC strategy is adopted to handle voltage fluctuation between adjacent two COCs. In the ADC strategy, the operation reference power of the VSCs is further adjusted to recover the voltages. The voltage regulation is achieved based on the relationship among the VSC voltages and the minimum/maximum voltages of the whole network, which does not depend on the information of each nodal voltage and thus real-time network communication is avoided. This paper reports the waveform characteristics and parameters of the overvoltage at the terminal of a 1.5 km 10 kV distribution line by direct triggered lightning. The three-phase overvoltage exhibited three kinds of waveforms, all including the initial rising process of the negative peak, the transition from negative peak to the positive peak or the residual voltage, and the subsequent oscillation process. It is observed that the negative peak value of the three-phase overvoltage is between −8.2 kV and −96.1 kV and the rise time of negative peak is between 3.2 μs and 31.7 μs, while the corresponding peak value of the return stroke current is between 3.3 kA and 32.9 kA. When the return stroke current is relatively small, the negative peak value of the direct struck phase overvoltage is twice or more than that of the indirect struck phase. When it is larger, the negative peak value of the indirect struck phase overvoltage is much closer to that of direct struck phase. There is good linear relation between the negative peak value of the indirect struck phase overvoltage and the peak value of the lightning return stroke current, with correlation coefficient being 0.98 and 0.90. Ultra-high voltage fast vacuum circuit breakers (FVCBs) could benefit a power system by promoting transient stability because their opening and closing times are significantly lower than those of commonly used circuit breakers at transmission voltage. This paper presents the design and verification of a prototype 363-kV/5000-A – 63-kA multiple-break FVCB. The prototype consists of two parallel-connected circuit branches in each phase. Each branch comprises three breaking units. The breaking unit, arranged on a 330-kV-class insulating platform, is a double-break FVCB driven by two independent electromagnetic repulsion actuators. The breaking units include a specially designed 40.5-kV vacuum interrupter (VI) with an extended ceramic envelope and optimized contact contours. A 4.0-nF grading capacitor is connected in parallel with each break to achieve a uniform stressed voltage distribution across the break. The prototype performs controlled switching of short-circuit current with an arcing time of 2.0 ms. The feasibility of the 363-kV FVCB is verified by a dielectric test on one break of the prototype and a series of tests on a single-phase prototype according to the international standard IEC 62271-100, 2017 and the Chinese standard GB 1984-2014. The tests include controlled switching of a short-circuit current in a short arcing time under different transient recovery voltages following test duties T100s(b) and T100a, short-time withstand current and peak withstand current tests, a temperature rise test, and an electromagnetic compatibility test. The bidirectional CLLC resonant converter has distinguished potential in battery chargers and energy storage systems for its advantages in soft switching and bidirectional power flow capability. However, traditional CLLC converters generally adopt symmetrical design to maintain bidirectional symmetrical characteristics, which means the secondary LC network is designed to be equal to the primary LC network after reflection. The symmetrical design is only suitable for voltage grade matching scenarios where a wide voltage range is not required, such as CLLC-type dc transformers. Whereas in the field of bidirectional chargers, due to the wide voltage range of battery, there are significant differences in the characteristics required between charging and discharging mode, which makes symmetrical design no longer applicable. To cope with this issue, this paper proposes a novel design methodology of CLLC based on parameter equivalent and time domain model. With the parameter equivalent principle, the CLLC resonant tank with arbitrary parameters is investigated to satisfy the requirements of wide voltage range for bidirectional charger application. Compared with the symmetrical design, the proposed method can meet the requirements of bidirectional gain within preset frequency range and guarantee the achievement of zero-voltage switching under required load conditions with the minimum reactive power. In addition, the area product capacity of the magnetic part of the CLLC resonant tank is minimized based on the parameter equivalent principle. Voltage regulation and proper load-sharing are two main control objectives of DC microgrids which the consensus-based secondary control can be regarded as a feasible approach to achieve them. Using this approach, in addition to the stable voltage regulation, the load is shared according to the nominal potential of the distributed generation units. Nevertheless, the conventional consensus-based secondary control uses the time-triggered communication paradigm that leads to a high communication burden due to transmitting and receiving unnecessary data. In this paper, to prevent excessive data-exchanging, the mentioned approach is upgraded with a novel event-triggered scheme. The system stability analysis under the suggested event-triggered secondary controller is assessed using the Lyapunov theorem. Furthermore, the Zeno-freeness feature of the proposed solution is mathematically proved after assessing uniformly ultimately bounded stability and extracting the current per-unit and voltage derivatives dynamic as the consensus algorithm’s external inputs. The proposed approach is applied to a DC microgrid, and its performance is validated under different scenarios using Simulink/MATLAB environment. This paper investigates the dynamic voltage support (DVS) from inverter-based resources (IBRs) under voltage sags to enhance the low-voltage ride-through performance. The DVS problem is formulated as a nonconvex optimization program that maximizes the positive-sequence voltage magnitude at the point of common coupling (PCC) subject to the current, active power, and synchronization stability constraints. Then, we perform the optimality analysis to explore the global optimum analytically. It is found that the unique global optimum has three scenarios/stages (S1–S3), which depends on the specific relationship among grid voltage, grid strength, and physical limits of IBRs. The explicit closed-form solutions in S1 and S3 are derived, and the optimality conditions (an implicit solution) of S2 are provided, which guarantees the global optimality and enables the compatibility with fast real-time control. Finally, we implement the optimum with a grid-connected single-stage photovoltaic (PV) power plant by integrating a DVS controller. The paper establishes convergence properties of decentralized and distributed control strategies that use a Steinmetz-based technique for mitigating voltage unbalance on distribution feeders. Reactive power from distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar photovoltaic (PV), is used to balance voltages at critical nodes in the distribution network. Interactions between controllers are analyzed and a theoretical guarantee is derived for stability of the control algorithms. This is achieved using Banach fixed-point theory. Providing such convergence results ensures robustness of the proposed control algorithms in realistic settings where parameters are uncertain and/or slowly varying, disturbances are prevalent, and control and measurement signals are prone to delays. In this paper a control method for a matrix converter (MC) based on the heterodyne concept from the communication field is presented. The method is used to convert the high frequency of a microturbine generator’s (MTG) output voltage to the utility grid’s frequency. In this control method a frequency modulation (FM) of the MC’s switching frequency is achieved using a DQ0 analysis of the converter’s filtered output voltage with the utility grid’s frequency as a reference. After filtration, the MC achieves a conversion to the reference frequency with a minimal total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage while using a low switching frequency. In addition, the proposed method decouples the output frequency, phase angle and voltage amplitude, which allows them to be controlled separately. This paper proposes a novel dual input nine-level inverter (DINLI) topology which requires only seven controllable devices. The dual inputs are un-identical DC voltage sources in the ratio 1:3. A simple control scheme is derived by appropriately modifying the phase disposition pulse width modulation technique to generate high-quality 9-level output from the DINLI topology. At any given instant, a maximum of four switches conduct out of which only a maximum of two switches operate at high frequency, bringing down the switching and conduction losses significantly and improving the overall system efficiency. The bidirectional DINLI (BDINLI) topology with reactive power capability can be realized by replacing the unidirectional devices with the controlled switches (i.e., total nine switches). In addition, the proposed DINLI topology does not require extra voltage balancing circuits which further improves the efficiency. The DINLI operation is verified through MATLAB simulations for grid-connected applications and its extension to an n-level, 3-phase application is also investigated. The single-phase-to-ground (SPG) fault at the valve side of the converter transformer is one of the most critical faults threatening the operation of bipolar half-bridge modular-multilevel-converter-based multi-terminal direct-current (HB-MMC MTDC) systems. Following a valve-side SPG fault, the upper-arm submodule (SM) capacitors in the faulty converter may suffer a serious overvoltage, and the grid-side fault currents may experience no zero-crossings. The existing protection methods generally rely on tripping the grid-side alternate-current circuit-breaker (ACCB), which cannot fully isolate the fault. The healthy poles and stations may encounter severe disturbance and be all blocked, which will lead to a power outage of the entire MTDC system. This paper proposes an ACCB-independent scheme based on thyristor-pairs and damping SMs to address these problems. Antiparallel thyristor-pairs are connected in series within the upper and lower arms in each phase. Serial damping SMs are connected within the lower arms to help the lower-arm thyristor pairs cut off the fault currents. Although the proposed additional devices inevitably cause conduction losses, they can effectively protect the faulty converter and healthy circuit in the MTDC system. This paper presents a combined control scheme that consists of two complementary control strategies, namely hierarchical control and autonomous control to handle contingencies in a multi-terminal high voltage direct current (MTDC) system. The proposed hierarchical control considers three optimal targets, i.e., equal or proportional power sharing, minimizations of transmission loss and total DC voltage variation. The primary control layer implements the droop control for voltage source converters (VSCs). While in the secondary control layer, voltage reference setpoints of the VSCs in droop control scheme are calculated by the proposed optimal power flow method with the equal or proportional power sharing as equality constraints. As the hierarchical control relies on communication system, the autonomous control for power sharing can be activated during communication system malfunctioning or rapid power variation caused by renewable energy sources. The combined control strategy can greatly increase the reliability of the MTDC system. This paper presents a new voltage support (VS) strategy for photovoltaic (PV) systems based on voltage sensitivity analysis to enhance the dynamic voltage stability (DVS) of islanded microgrids (MGs). Every network contains different characteristics. In particular, MGs have unique features compared to utility grids such as high resistance to reactance ratio (R/X). Consequently, injection of both active and reactive current is likely to improve the DVS of the islanded MG. Therefore, instead of engaging the entire capacity to reactive current injection which is performed in conventional voltage support strategy, both the active and reactive current is injected in the proposed strategy. On contrary, without considering the fact that each network contains distinctive characteristics, other strategies with both active and reactive current injection provide fixed active and reactive current which are uniform for all networks. To convey the network distinctive features on VS strategy, voltage sensitivity subject to active and reactive current injection is used in the proposed strategy. As a consequence, unlike other fixed active and reactive current strategies, the proposed strategy provides unique combination of active and reactive current for every network. The concept and derivation of the proposed strategy is clearly described. Network sensitivity analysis is carried out to determine the voltage sensitivity coefficients. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is theoretically demonstrated and also compared with other strategies. Case studies are carried out on two different islanded MGs. The results show that the proposed voltage support strategy is capable of enhancing the DVS of islanded MGs by mitigating a possible instability, and by restoring the voltage faster than other strategies. High penetration level of single-phase solar PVs in low voltage distribution systems has raised concern about the Voltage Unbalance (VU) level. Real-time phase reconfiguration using Dynamic Switching Devices (DSD) has been proposed as a cost-effective solution to mitigate the excessive level of Voltage Unbalance. DSDs are fast power electronics devices that could change the phase connection of a solar PV with minimum disturbances. Most of the proposed methodologies for controlling DSDs are based on a central controller and the assumption of availability of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and a communication system. In this paper, we propose a distributed control methodology to control DSDs based on the measurement from the local node only and using the sensitivity of nodal voltage to power injection. Each DSD decides on phase swapping if it rectifies the unbalance index of the local node. We show that decreasing the Voltage Unbalance Factor (VUF) of individual nodes will improve the unbalance situation of the whole feeder. This paper proposes a novel reactive power-based control strategy for single-phase PV inverters (PVIs) to simultaneously improve voltage unbalance (VU) and voltage regulation (VR) in low-voltage distribution networks. The proposed strategy relies on communication links between neighboring PVIs to exchange limited data. In this strategy, each PVI finds communication paths between itself and the closest neighboring ones connected to other phases. Then, using the obtained paths and the maximum and the minimum voltage magnitude of the grid, PVIs improve both VU and VR at the same time. The performance of the proposed control strategy is evaluated by various simulation studies using the IEEE European low-voltage test feeder and considering different operational conditions. In addition, the impacts of moving clouds and a failure in the communication links have been assessed. This paper presents a new control strategy for enhancing the dc voltage regulation and the transient response in the multi-terminal VSC-HVDC system by ensuring swift power-sharing among converters when encountering large disturbance such as converter loss or ac fault at one of the converter stations. The quick power sharing can be realized using direct power control (DPC) since it has a merit of fast power dynamic response. On the other hand, to limit the converter current during ac fault, a new coordination strategy between DPC and vector current control (VCC) is proposed. Furthermore, a new simplified model of the MTDC system is developed to study the performance of DPC in enhancing the dc voltage dynamics response analytically. The time-domain simulation of the detailed model of the four converter stations MTDC system verify that the proposed control strategy significantly reduces the overshoot in the transient dc voltage response following an outage or ac fault. As a result, together with the droop gain selection for the maximum permissible steady-state dc voltage deviation, the proposed control strategy can help to reduce the size of the dc chopper in the MTDC grid or even avoiding it. Moreover, the comparative analysis based on time-domain simulation depicts that the proposed simplified model has the same dc voltage response compared to the detailed model of the MTDC system except for a steady-state error of 0.47% and a little bit longer settling time (1.5 ms) at transient. It is essential to carry out an AC voltage withstand test after GIS extension and maintenance. At present, the common methods of GIS AC withstand test include double isolation gap, reduce the test voltage, and narrow test range. These methods generally have some defects: such as complex test processes, all bus de-energized, some apparatus failed to test, unreliable test results and so on. This paper presents a distinctive GIS AC voltage withstand test method. The method controls the phase-frequency parameters of the test voltage so that it maintains the same phase-frequency relationships as the in-service bus voltage during the process of testing. Accurate faulty phase detection under single-line-to-ground (SLG) fault is the basis of the emerging voltage-based fault arc suppression technology. Most conventional faulty phase recognition criteria assume the distributed line-to-ground parameters are symmetrical, therefore suffering invalidity in actual distribution networks especially under high-resistance ground-fault conditions. This paper firstly analyzes the magnitude and phase angle variation models of the phase-to-ground voltages before and after the SLG fault. Considering the asymmetrical distributed parameters and the line impedance, the specific phase-to-ground voltage variation rules corresponding to SLG fault on each phase are then discussed. Based on the voltage variation rules, a robust and practical method for faulty phase identification is proposed, which does not need the distributed parameters. Finally, the correctness of the variation rules and the availability of the proposed method is verified by simulation. The paper proposes a rotor speed observer for sensorless voltage and frequency control of a standalone doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) system. The proposed speed estimator is designed based on the sliding mode observer (SMO) technique, which makes the estimation algorithm robust under parametric variations and external disturbances. The position of the rotor is computed directly by the integration of the estimated speed by the designed observer. The proposed observer requires the measurements of stator voltage and current to estimate the speed. The design procedure of the observer does not require the mechanical parameters of the DFIG, which makes the observer design independent of the mechanical parameters. Lyapunov stability criteria are used to formulate the sliding gains for the observer. Simulation and experimental results are demonstrated to show the efficacy of the designed observer in terms of accuracy and convergence rate under different steady-state and dynamic conditions. The estimated rotor speed and position are utilized for controlling the magnitude of the stator voltage of a standalone DFIG system, which validates the performance of the observer. Due to the second order harmonic in the phase voltage, the voltage peak value is much higher than the amplitude of its fundamental component in the 6/4 variable flux reluctance machines (VFRMs). Conventionally, the amplitude of the fundamental component in the phase voltage is used to calculate the voltage constraint in flux-weakening control, which results in a large voltage margin and reduces the DC link voltage utilization. To deal with this problem in the VFRMs, the flux-weakening control considering the second order harmonic of the phase voltage is proposed in this paper. In this method, the voltage peak value is used to calculate the current operating points, by using which the maximum voltage utilization in flux-weakening region can be achieved. It shows by using the proposed method a wider the constant torque region owing to the lower voltage margin in the VFRMs, which exhibits higher power output in flux-weakening region. In this paper, the transient stability for dc-link voltage of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbine (WT) is studied in detail during low voltage ride-through (LVRT). Firstly, referring to the rotor swing equation of synchronous generator (SG), the nonlinear large-signal model of dc-link voltage is established. In addition, the damping power, static slip power, and dynamic slip power are derived. Consequently, the transient performance of dc-link voltage under the different operation conditions of DFIG is revealed during LVRT. Furthermore, the instability form of dc-link voltage with the moving process of equivalent power angle is analyzed by the energy function of dc-link voltage. In addition, the impacts of dc voltage control loop's parameter, the active current of the stator, and the slip on the stabilization process of dc-link voltage are studied. Analysis result indicates that the insufficient damping and large unbalanced power would deteriorate the transient behavior and steady-state level of dc-link voltage. Therefore, an additional damping and slip power feedforward control strategy is proposed, which can make the transition process of dc-link voltage smoother and significantly improve the voltage steady-state level. The main challenges for Finite Set-model Predictive Torque and Flux Control (MPTC) include huge calculation amount, large torque ripple, and the selection of weighting factor. To deal with these challenges and achieve the fastest torque response, a novel MPTC strategy with virtual voltage vector-based pattern is proposed in this paper. In each control period, a desired voltage vector is computed based on the maximum torque variation rate. The virtual desired voltage vector is combined by using basic voltage vectors with the minimum switching times. The switching pattern between two adjacent control periods is optimized by using a cost function in realtime. Compared with the traditional MPTC approach, the novel strategy has multifaceted improved performances: faster torque response, less calculation amount, lower switching frequency, reduced torque ripple, higher efficiency and no weighting factor. Since the wide application of virtual synchronous generators (VSGs), the power grid faces great challenges in the safe and stable operation due to their limited thermal capacity and weak anti-disturbance ability. During transient period, for example, a fault occurs in the transmission line, the VSG may lose the transient angle stability and provoke the current hard limit. Even if the fault is cleared by tripping of line, it still faces the problem of instability and voltage dips. To address this problem, in this paper, the post-fault large-signal model of VSG is derived first via the travelling waves based fault information acquisition. Subsequently, with the effect of both active and reactive power loops taken into account, a two-stage simultaneous control scheme is proposed for improving the transient stability of VSG, while considering the current limitation during fault state and voltage support after fault clearance. This method is fulfilled by mode switching and an additional feedback control based on the fault signal. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method under both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults is verified. Moreover, the application of the proposed method in a multiple VSGs system is also verified. High penetrations of photovoltaic (PV) systems can cause severe voltage quality problems in distribution networks. This paper proposes a distributed control strategy based on the dynamic formation of coalitions to coordinate a large number of PV inverters for voltage regulation. In this strategy, a rule-based coalition formation scheme deals with the zonal voltage difference caused by the uneven integration of PV capacity. Under this scheme, PV inverters form into separate voltage regulation coalitions autonomously according to local, neighbor as well as coalition voltage magnitude and regulation capacity information. To coordinate control within each coalition, we develop a feedback-based leader-follower consensus algorithm which eliminates the voltage violations caused by the fast fluctuations of load and PV generation. This algorithm allocates the required reactive power contribution among the PV inverters according to their maximum available capacity to promote an effective and fair use of the overall voltage regulation capacity. Case studies based on realistic distribution networks and field-recorded data validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Moreover, comparison with a centralized network decomposition-based scheme shows the flexibility of coalition formation in organizing the distributed PV inverters.
