This paper proposes an improved design methodology of the double-sided LC-compensated capacitive power transfer (CPT) system considering the inductance detuning. Compared to the perfect-resonant scenario, this paper shows that the inductance detuning has the benefit to achieve the soft-switching condition for the CPT system, and the output current and internal voltage stresses can also be maintained within the desired range. The contributions of this paper are summarized in three parts. First, it analyzes the impacts of the inductance variations on the system frequency property, including the input current, output current, and internal capacitor voltage stresses. Second, it proposes three principles to detune the inductances as the methodology to design a CPT system. Third, a prototype is implemented, which achieves 368.5 W power transfer across a 400 mm × 400 mm × 4 mm glass layer with 91.8% dc–dc efficiency. Experimental results validate that the proposed design principles are satisfied, showing that the output current is within the desired range, the input soft-switching condition is achieved, and the internal voltage stresses are within the safety limit. Moreover, the efficiency and frequency properties are also validated by the experimental results, showing a wide power range of the high-efficiency operation (higher than 90%) and a wide frequency bandwidth of the soft-switching operation (from 0.96 to 1.12 MHz). In this paper, an overload and short-circuit protection method is proposed for voltage source inverter-based uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system. In order to achieve high reliability and availability of the UPS, short circuit and overload protection scheme are necessary. When overload or short circuit happens, using the proposed control method, the amplitude of the output current can be limited to a constant value, which can be set by the customer to avoid the destruction of the power converter, and to obtain a faster recovery performance as well. The detailed principle of the proposed protection method is discussed in this paper. It mainly contains three parts in the control diagram for current limit, first is the anti-windup in the voltage and current controllers, then the feedforward of the capacitor voltage to the current control loop, the last is the fast reset of the resonant part of the current controller when overcurrent happens. The procedure of developing the control method is also presented in the paper. Experimental results on a commercial UPS system are presented to verify the effectiveness of the control method. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. This paper presents bidirectional grid-connected modular multilevel converters (MMC) with direct digital control and division-summation processes to achieve power-injection and rectification functions. A direct digital control is developed to track current references, regulate dc-bus voltage and cell voltage, and balance the upper and lower dc-bus voltages. It can accommodate wide filter-inductance variation and take care of source voltage harmonics to achieve tight current tracking and low distortion output current. Based on the power-balance principle, the commands of arm currents can be determined directly. In this paper, the MMC configuration is introduced first, and then the control laws for current tracking and voltage regulation are derived in detail. Railguns are current-driven guns that allow reaching large muzzle velocities and energies. In the military context, the long-range artillery scenario makes use of these two capabilities to enable the launch of hypervelocity projectiles to target distances above 100 km. As of today, the most advanced railgun project is conducted by the Office of Naval Research, Arlington, VA, USA, and features railguns with a muzzle energy of 32 MJ. Such large artillery railgun systems with efficiencies above 30% are fed by a pulsed power system with a nominal energy content of about 100 MJ. In contrast to this, experiments with French-German Research Institute’s (ISL) most powerful railgun, PEGASUS, have reached muzzle energies of 2 MJ, only. The nearer future ISL has to answer two questions: 1) is the railgun technology adequate for a long-range artillery scenario? 2) can the railgun launch a hypervelocity projectile which is being developed by other groups in ISL? To do so and to support the development of the hypervelocity projectile, a larger railgun installation with a significant increase of the energy and free flight capability is required. In this paper, three different railgun systems were investigated using an electric circuit simulation code. The systems are referred to by the energy being stored in the capacitors as 25, 50, and 100 MJ. The aim of this paper is to investigate what masses can be accelerated to the relevant velocity range for the long-range artillery scenario by these different primary energies. Clamp mode snubbers are very well suited for the series structure of the insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) in pulsed power applications. They properly meet the necessities expected from them such as the fast operating of the series IGBTs since they have no effect on the gate side. In addition, they can provide safe voltage condition for the IGBTs in short circuit faults, which are very probable in pulsed applications. The clamp mode snubber can perform its voltage balancing task whenever the power capacity of the snubber can support the injected powers due to the voltage unbalancing factors. This paper initially introduces the main factors injecting power to the snubbers. Then, it will be illustrated that the exact injected power to each predetermined snubber cannot be determined due to the uncertainties about the effect of the voltage unbalancing factors. Although it is impossible to determine the exact value of the power injected to each snubber, the total injected powers to the snubbers can be calculated. Therefore, as an effective remedy, this paper proposes a concentrated snubber. Using the proposal, all the injected powers are conducted to a centralized circuit and can be easily managed. In addition, analytical expressions are provided for proper dimensioning of the proposed concentrated snubber elements. A single-stage TRIAC (TRIode for alternating current switch) dimmable LED (light emitting diode) driver using a buck converter fed through a capacitor input rectifier provides many advantages such as small-scale implementation, low output current ripple, and stable dimming operation. This circuit topology, however, has a serious issue: A large inrush current to the smoothing capacitor. To solve this issue, this paper focuses on a bleeder circuit in the TRIAC dimmable LED driver. This paper presents the mechanism of the large inrush current issue and its relationship to a conventional bleeder circuit. Moreover, this paper proposes a turn-off delay controlled bleeder circuit. The proposed bleeder circuit is analyzed by using its discrete-time state-space model in order to set proper circuit parameters for inrush current reduction. Experimental results demonstrate the inrush current reduction by the proposed method, which leads to a 37% reduction of maximum input current, as well as proper dimming operation and low output current ripple. This paper presents an interleaved boost converter with a bifold Dickson voltage multiplier suitable for interfacing low-voltage renewable energy sources to high-voltage distribution buses and other applications that require a high-voltage-gain conversion ratio. The proposed converter was constructed from two stages: an interleaved boost stage, which contains two inductors operated by two low-side active switches, and a voltage multiplier cell (VMC) stage, which mainly consists of diodes and capacitors to increase the overall voltage gain. The proposed converter offers a high-voltage-gain ratio with low voltage stress on the semiconductor switches as well as the passive components. This allows the selection of efficient and compact components. Moreover, the required inductance that ensures operation in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) is lower than the one in the conventional interleaved boost converter. The distinction of the proposed converter is that the inductors’ currents are equal, regardless of the number of VMCs. Equal sharing of interleaved boost-stage currents reduces the conduction loss in the active switches as well as the inductors and thus improves the overall efficiency, as the conduction power loss is a quadratic function. In this paper, the theory of operation and steady-state analysis of the proposed converter are illustrated and verified by simulation results. This paper investigates the dependence of the supercapacitor Peukert constant on its terminal voltage, aging condition, and operating temperature. Recent studies show that the charge delivered by a supercapacitor during a constant current discharge process increases when the discharge current decreases if the discharge current is above a certain threshold, i.e., Peukert's law applies. By conducting extensive experiments using three supercapacitor samples with different rated capacitances from different manufacturers, this paper reveals that the Peukert constant increases when the initial voltage of the constant current discharge process is lower, the supercapacitor is more heavily aged, or the operating temperature is lower. The physical mechanisms accounting for the Peukert constant dependence are illustrated by analyzing an $RC$ ladder circuit model. When the supercapacitor terminal voltage is higher, the aging condition is lighter, or the operating temperature is higher, more charge is stored in the supercapacitor. Consequently, when the same discharge current is applied, the discharge time is longer and the branch capacitors are more deeply discharged. Therefore, the relaxation effects of the slow branches are reduced and the supercapacitor behaves more like a single capacitor rather than a distributed capacitor network, which ultimately leads to a lower Peukert constant. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are being used in wide range of power electronic applications. These converters have attracted a lot of attention during recent years and exist in different topologies with similar basic concepts. This paper presents five main submodules (SMs) to be used as the basic structures of MLIs. The paper reviews the common MLI topologies from the structural point of view. The topologies are divided into the different SMs to show conventional MLI configurations and future topologies that can be created from the main SMs. A comparative study between different topologies is performed in detail. The MLIs are categorized and investigated with from different perspectives such as the number of components, the ability to create inherent negative voltage, working in regeneration mode and using single dc source. This paper presents a dc–dc input-parallel output-parallel (IPOP) converter configuration for renewable energy integration with medium-voltage dc grids. A full-bridge zero-current-switching (FB-ZCS) converter with voltage-doubler output is proposed as the fundamental module. To achieve smooth current commutation and ZCS, the leakage inductance of transformer and a resonant capacitor across its secondary are utilized. This resonant capacitor is always charged to its full-rated capacity irrespective of converter loading and requires a dedicated charging interval resulting in duty-cycle loss. For a given leakage inductance, a large resonant capacitor is required for higher current ratings. With a single-centralized converter, these operational and design constraints result in significant duty-cycle loss, restricting the operation range. This paper proposes an IPOP configuration for high-power applications. Phase shedding at reduced loading ensures that individual modules are operated optimally. Input inductance requirement in modules is reduced due to interleaving of the input current. Additionally, voltage stress across converter components and input current ripple are reduced by 50% in the proposed converter modules. Steady-state operation, modeling, current-sharing control, start-up, and shutdown of modules in the IPOP configuration are demonstrated using simulations. This paper presents a neutral-point deviation and ripple compensating control method applied to a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter. The neutral-point deviation and its harmonic components are analyzed with a focus on the average current flowing through the neutral-point of the dc link. This paper also proposes a control scheme compensating for the neutral-point deviation and dominant harmonic components under generalized unbalanced grid operating conditions. The positive and negative sequence components of the switching functions and ac input currents are employed to accurately explain the behavior of three-level NPC converter. A high-frequency high voltage gain discontinuous conduction mode coupled-inductor boost LED driver based on planar component is presented in this paper. GaN switch is adopted with lower conducting resistance and higher switching speed. Zero voltage switching (ZVS) is achieved at the same time to reduce high switching loss caused by high switching frequency. Compared with the previous work, the voltage gain is higher and efficiency is higher because of ZVS. This paper focuses on high efficiency; therefore, resonant gate driver is adopted and efficiency is increased by 0.6%. In terms of the coupled-inductor, planar component is used and parameter optimization is also proposed to realize lower loss, including wingding loss and fringing loss caused by the air gap. A 500 kHz 36 W prototype has been designed to demonstrate theoretical analysis. In addition, comparison of drive loss between the resonant gate driver used in this paper and conventional driver implemented by Si8271 is made, revealing advantages of the resonant driver. Power converters are one of the failure sources in modern power systems, and hence driver of maintenance and downtime costs, which should be reduced by reliable design, control, and operation of converters. This paper proposes a power sharing control strategy for evenly distributing the thermal stresses among dc converters in dc microgrids, and consequently enhancing the overall system reliability. The aim of this paper is to extend the aging process of failure prone converters by adjusting their loadings. The proposed approach employs the prior experienced thermal damages on the converter's fragile components in order to adjust its contribution on demand supply. According to the proposed strategy, the higher the thermal stress on a converter is, the lower the power it will supply. As a result, the overall system reliability will be improved. A numerical case study on a dc microgrid is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed power sharing strategy. In this paper, a single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) dc–dc converter is proposed. The significant feature of the proposed converter is feeding a constant power load in low-voltage side (LVS) port, where even feeding a variable load at LVS does not have any cross regulation to high-voltage side port with the desired approximation. Magnificently, both merits are obtained in open-loop manner, which is an outstanding characteristic in comparison with that of the existed converters. In this paper, soft commutation and soft switching of switches and diodes are investigated along with the aforementioned main novelty. Moreover, detailed theoretical analyses of the proposed SIDO dc–dc converter in continuous conduction mode are presented besides the comparisons with some other structures. In this paper, a series-capacitor-based interleaving buck power factor correction (PFC) converter is proposed, the intermediate energy storage capacitance of which is operated at discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM), and automatic power factor (PF) correction for this converter is obtained. Moreover, the voltage across the series capacitor of the proposed PFC converter is clamped at the input voltage, and thus peak voltage stress existed in the traditional DCVM buck PFC could be relieved. By effectively regulating the charge/discharge time for the series capacitor, ultrahigh step-down conversion ratio of the proposed converter is achieved, the conversion ratio of which is independent of the duty cycle and only related to the switching frequency and circuit parameters. Therefore, high PF can be obtained due to very narrow deadtime of the input current. Meanwhile, the proposed PFC converter can realize the soft turn-on of part power switch and soft turn-off of part power diodes. In addition, comparing with the traditional discontinuous inductor current mode PFC, the input current of the proposed PFC converter is continuous so that the peak value and root-mean-square value of input current can be reduced. The operational principle, performance analysis, and parameter design principle are given in this paper. The analysis results show that the PF and total harmonic distortion are also independent of the duty cycle. This paper proposes an “isolated soft switching current fed LCC-T resonant dc–dc converter for PV/fuel cell applications.” This converter is able to achieve zero voltage switching for front-end inverter switches and zero-current switching for voltage doubler diodes. The majority of dc–dc converters have compact capacitive (C) filter in output, but high harmonic currents through transformer makes them bulky. The proposed converter attempts to improve harmonic content through a transformer under wide load and input variations as well as it can significantly reduce required turns ratio of transformer to achieve required output voltage. For the above reasons, the proposed converter can offer better footprints and therefore it can be a potential candidate for PV/fuel cell applications. This paper presents basic operating principal, detailed analysis, control, and design of the proposed converter with the help of an example. This converter operates in two modes, i.e., constant duty cycle mode and constant frequency mode, depending on load demand, and is explained through operating curves. This paper describes a bipolar pulsed power supply for strategic mineral exploration. Depending on the operating conditions, the bipolar pulsed power supply is capable of delivering the required high voltage and low current or low voltage and high current when operated, respectively, in either the grounded dipole mode or the loop mode. Based on a 500-V 12.5-A unit module, series and parallel connections of four modules are configured to satisfy both the grounded dipole mode (2000 V) and the loop mode (50 A), respectively. A unit module comprising an LCC resonant converter and a full-bridge-based bipolar pulse-switching unit is designed. In order to achieve high power density, the leakage inductance of the transformer is used as a resonant inductor in place of an external inductor. Accordingly, the resonant tank parameters are designed to give the resonant current a trapezoidal shape to reduce conduction loss and provide high efficiency. In addition, a simple gate-driving algorithm that uses the repetitive short pulse to cover the frequency range from dc to 8 kHz is proposed to allow the compact design of a minimized gate transformer. In this paper, the detailed design of the resonant circuit and the transformer of a unit module is described, and the operation is verified through simulation and experimental results. Finally, the developed LCC resonant converter achieves the maximum efficiency of 95%, the maximum power factor of 0.96, and a high power density of 806.5 W/L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reduced switch active phase converters (APC) are cost-effective solutions for running three-phase loads from single-phase grids. This paper proposes a novel auxiliary-capacitor-based APC (AC-APC) for this application. The combination of the topological location of the auxiliary capacitor and the control of the AC-APC reduces current stress on the semiconductor devices. In this paper, a selection criterion for the optimal auxiliary capacitor value is formulated to reduce the device currents in such a way that the overall efficiency is enhanced. This paper presents a comparative analysis of converter volt-ampere (VA) rating and device power loss for conventional H-bridge active front-end and inverter-based topology, APC, and AC-APC. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed AC-APC, an experimental study is conducted on the APC and the AC-APC feeding a 3-hp three-phase induction motor. At a full load of $\text{2.5}\,\text{kW}$ and $\text{0.8 } \text{power factor}$ , the measured maximum efficiency of the AC-APC is $2\%$ higher than that of the APC. Radio frequency (RF) power-matching circuits are used in many applications that require controllable and efficient power transfer for a variable load. They are commonly found in plasma chambers in the semiconductor manufacturing industries which deal with highly dynamic loading conditions. State-of-the-art technologies for the power-matching circuits in plasma generation utilize multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) as one of the main passive components in the tuning circuitry. Such matching circuits must have the capability of withstanding high RF currents without thermal breakdown. A thermal breakdown is caused by the dissipated heat in the MLCC units at high RF currents. Therefore, a qualifying process is required for testing the MLCC functionality. This paper develops a repeatable test-bench setup for the qualification of MLCC units for power matching in a plasma generating circuits. The setup described in this paper enables the industry to develop performance criteria for the MLCC units. The test bench was built using a conventional tunable matching network to deliver the RF power to the MLCC unit under test. The functionality of the test bench is verified using Keysight’s Advanced Design System simulation tool. This paper presents a balancing algorithm for the so-called Director Switch, a controlled, reverse conducting, self-powered, high-voltage switch, using series-connected insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). This is a key component on two new voltage-source, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter topologies. These, which promise efficiency, cost, and size reductions, are an alternate arm converter and a series bridge converter. One of the main design challenges of the director switch is how to supply the IGBT gate drivers, and other auxiliary electronics while overcoming the high-voltage insulation barrier to ground level. In this paper, this is achieved by using the energy stored in a capacitive clamp snubber circuit, which also helps with the overvoltage mitigation during rare hard-switching events. However, the clamp capacitor and by proxy the IGBT voltages become highly unbalanced during operation, compromising the integrity of the switch. This paper presents a balancing strategy that consists in applying a controlled delay in the switching of the IGBT levels, in a way that forces a voltage balance on all the switch levels. This paper proposes a new class of topologies of single-stage high-frequency ac-link power converters, which is capable of providing both voltage step up/down within a wide frequency and voltage ranges. The proposed family, which supports bidirectional power flow, can interface various single/multi-port dc and/or single/multi-phase ac systems to provide dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, or ac–ac power conversion. In this family of converter, which offers a very modular structure, a small inductor that forms the link exchanges power entirely or partially between the source and load. The proposed family can function in buck, boost, and/or buck–boost modes of operation, and a combination of these modes of operation is also feasible. In comparison to the parallel inductive four-quadrant link converters, the proposed family features a significantly reduced link peak current, reduced switch ratings, and reduced total number of power switches. These features enhance the efficiency, reduce the total cost, and increase the power density of the system. In order to further improve the overall efficiency of the system, minimize the current/voltage stress over all utilized semiconductor devices, and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI), a small capacitor is placed in parallel with the link inductor to realize soft-switching operation for the proposed configurations. Moreover, the proposed converters have the potential to incorporate a lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer for electrical isolation. The proposed circuit topologies prevent reverse recovery issues and eliminate losses corresponding to body diodes of power switching devices via utilizing power switches in conjunction with external fast recovery diodes. The proposed family offers a very high level of reliability owing to its immunity from short circuit of input and output terminals and open circuit of the link inductor, which may occur in other power converters due to commutation problem resulting from a short deadtime or an overlap time between switches, unwanted control command, delay in electronic circuits, or EMI noise's misgating on or off, in addition to the absence of electrolytic capacitors in the power circuit. A control approach is also developed to regulate input and output currents in one stage of power conversion. A detailed theoretical analysis, operation, design methodology, and control strategy of the proposed family are provided in this paper, and the effectiveness and performance of the proposed converter family are verified via simulation results and experimentally. The capacitance of sub-module capacitor has a great impact on the cost, size, and operation of the modular multi-level converter (MMC). However, the capacitance selected by the existing methods does not always meet the requirement in practice. To find out the reasons for this improper selection, the existing selection methods are analyzed in this paper. Based on the analysis, a new capacitance-selection method is proposed. In the new method, the problems of the existing methods are solved, and the calculation of capacitor voltage is based on a proposed capacitor-voltage model whose calculation error can be smaller than 0.1%. Furthermore, the Secant Method is used in the capacitance selection to quickly calculate the required capacitance. The new capacitance-selection method can be applicable to the MMC not having a circular operating region. In addition, this paper found that the capacitor voltage and the capacitor-voltage ripple reach their maximum values when the power-factor angles of the MMC are –π/2 and π/2, respectively, and the dc component in the capacitor voltage changes according to the operating condition of the MMC. In low-power applications of photovoltaic (PV) systems, the transformerless grid-connected inverters have been preferred to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost, size, and power losses when they are compared to the ones with the transformer. A transformerless single-phase inverter topology with a single dc-link capacitor for the grid-connected PV systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed inverter has been simulated by using a cooperation process of the MATLAB and SPICE package programs and it has been implemented for experimental verification. The proposed inverter reduces the high-frequency common-mode leakage current caused by parasitic capacitances of PV panels, whereas it is controlled with the unipolar sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation. Also, the results show that the common-mode voltage remains constant. The efficiency of the proposed inverter has been compared to that of the most common topologies having the dc-link decoupling during the zero voltage states. The continuous increasing share of power-converter-based renewable energies weakens the power system inertia. The lack of inertia becomes a main challenge to small-scale modern power systems in terms of control and stability. To alleviate adverse effects from inertia reductions, e.g., undesirable load shedding and cascading failures, three-phase grid-connected power converters should provide virtual inertia upon system demands. This can be achieved by directly linking the grid frequency and voltage references of dc-link capacitors/ultracapacitors. This paper reveals that the virtual inertia control may possibly induce instabilities to the power converters under weak grid conditions, which is caused by the coupling between the d- and q-axes as well as the inherent differential operator introduced by the virtual inertia control. To tackle this instability issue, this paper proposes a modified virtual inertia control to mitigate the differential effect, and thus, alleviating the coupling effect to a great extent. This paper presents a fast and robust dc-bus voltage control method for single-phase grid-connected dc/ac converters. The proposed technique precisely estimates the double-frequency (2-f) ripple of a dc-bus voltage and removes it from the voltage-control loop without adding any additional dynamics or oscillations. Conventionally, the 2-f ripple is managed by using large capacitors, which increase the cost and bulkiness of a converter. As a state-of-the-art approach, a notch filter (NF) or a dc-voltage estimator is used to effectively block the 2-f ripple from the voltage-control loop, which can significantly reduce the capacitor size. However, such an approach introduces new dynamics in the control loop, causes additional oscillations on the bus voltage, and increases the settling time of its response. This limits the degrees of freedom of the design to improve the overall system damping. The proposed method in this paper has no adverse impact on the original bus-voltage dynamic response. As a result, the bus-voltage control can be designed with higher speed and robustness and the whole system can operate with a reduced transient at both the bus voltage and the output ac current. This paper proposes a modular on-road wireless power transfer system with interoperable power adjustment mechanism. The paper is anticipated to enhance the capability of on-road charging during the movement of automated guided vehicles (AGV), by which the traveling mileage is increased, while the battery volume is decreased. The system design includes an interoperable power adjustment technique based on the detected impedance, and the moving position of AGV can be, hence, comprehended so as to facilitate the adjustment of the output power from each transmission module in a more flexible way. Through the investigation of on-road charging efficiency, all of coil magnetic analysis, misalignment charging evaluation, system stress simulation, and resonant characteristics investigation are performed. This paper introduces modeling and control of a cascaded flying capacitor bridge (CFCB) multilevel converter for a solid-state transformer. The finite control set-model predictive control (FCS-MPC) is easy and simple to implement for many applications. However, the computational complexity increases with the increase in the number of switches. Furthermore, as the number of control variables increases, the weighting factors also increase. Thus, it is difficult to apply to a system with a large number of switches and variables to be controlled similar to a CFCB multilevel converter. In this paper, the proposed method divides variables such as current, dc-link voltage, and flying capacitor voltage into layers. The proposed method reduces the number of states to be considered in the control, which shortens the computational time and simplifies expansion of the flying capacitor bridge. In addition, since weighting factors are not used, there is no tradeoff between current quality and voltage quality, and there is no difficulty in selecting weighting factors. Algorithms that include a method for compensating for the distortion caused by the delay of the digital control system are also described. Aging of power system assets challenges utilities to maintain reliable service while minimizing their maintenance costs. Although malfunction of devices in the transmission or distribution networks can have catastrophic consequences, their failure is seldom unforeseen. Typically, the device aging occurs gradually over time until its health condition reaches a point of complete breakdown. The overall objective of this paper is to devise a non-invasive, online condition monitoring technique of circuit switchers for shunt capacitor banks. It aims to detect abnormal operation of these devices based on features derived from raw voltage and current waveforms, such that a predictive maintenance strategy may be employed before a complete failure occurs. The data analyzed in this paper are collected at a transmission capacitor bus, where the banks are equipped with pre-insertion impedance. Through a baseline range of values for selected parameters, the proposed technique is able to detect missing pre-insertion impedance during the capacitor energizing and failure of pre-insertion impedance switch out a few cycles after the energizing operation. In this paper, a new class of bidirectional partial-resonance power converters is presented. The proposed family can be configured to interface single- or multi-port dc, single- or multi-phase ac systems at input-side and/or output-side. The proposed family offers a very modular structure, which can lead to cost reduction from a common designed module. In this converter, which accomplishes power conversion in a single stage, a small inductor placed in series with the input and output switch-bridges forms the link. This small link inductor is responsible for transferring power between different ports of the system. The proposed topologies can operate in buck, boost, and buck–boost modes of operation to step up and/or step down the voltage. In buck–boost mode of operation, the converter is controlled such that the power is entirely transferred through the link inductor; whereas, in buck or boost modes of operation only a fraction of the power is transferred through the link inductor, and the remaining power is directly transferred from input phases to the output phases. Galvanic isolation, which is typically a prominent factor contributing to power density of a converter, can be provided by means of a compact and lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer added to the link. In comparison with earlier generations of partial-resonance inductive-link power converters, in the proposed converter, the level of link peak current and consequently power-loss, as well as voltage and current stress of switches are dramatically decreased. A very small film capacitor can be placed in parallel with the link inductor to facilitate zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation for all the switches/diodes. Apart from increasing the overall efficiency, minimized dv/dt stress and improvement in power density are achieved by adding the link capacitor. The proposed converter employs four-quadrant switches, i.e., bidirectional-conducting bidirectional-blocking switches, and charges the link inductor in both positive and negative directions in each cycle. In view of this, better utilization of the link inductor and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) are offered. Furthermore, two distinct switching algorithms are developed for the proposed family of converters. In this paper, the detailed behavior of the proposed family is investigated analytically, and simulation and experimental results are presented to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed converter. A low-power proof-of-concept prototype with input voltage of 59 V/161 V, load voltage of 178 V/73.5 V, maximum switching frequency of 4.9 kHz/3.65 kHz at 215 W/450 W in a step-up/step-down operation is considered for the experimental verification. In modern power systems, the increasing penetration of renewables and power electronics, particularly inverter-based wind and solar power generation, is altering power system dynamics and bringing new stability concerns. One challenging issue that is attracting considerable attention is the wide range of power oscillations associated with multiple parallel grid-connected inverters. In such systems, the characteristics in terms of resonance and oscillation are significantly different from single-inverter systems. This paper investigates the mutual interaction and stability issues of multiple grid-interfacing inverters with LCL-filters in power-electronics-based power systems under various grid conditions. The investigation reveals that such interactions between power inverters and the grid may excite multiple resonances at various frequencies under certain grid conditions. The nodal admittance matrix concept, which was originally from power systems engineering, is adopted here. Moreover, this paper further develops an Interaction-Admittance model that can effectively describe these mutual interactions in terms of a physical network admittance. We apply our model to various scenarios such as stiff grid conditions and inductive grids with/without power factor correction capacitors. The results with the proposed framework demonstrate an intuitive interpretation of multi-inverter system resonance and instabilities. In this paper, a new non-isolated two-input single-output dc–dc converter with high voltage gain is proposed. In the proposed converter, there are two three-winding coupled inductors used to achieve a high voltage gain and ripple-free input currents. The proposed converter has two switches, and their control pulses are the same as the control pulses of the two-phase interleaved converters with a phase shift equal to $\text{180}^{\circ} $. The voltage stresses of switches and diodes are reduced and are always lower than the high output voltage. The proposed converter is extendable to a four-input single-output converter in which the switches have the control pulses the same as those in four-phase converters with phase shifts equal to $\text{90}^{\circ} $. In this paper, the proposed topology is analyzed in all operating modes, and the values of current and voltage stresses of all switches and diodes, voltage gain, and required conditions for input current ripple cancelation are calculated during a switching period. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. This paper studies the high power density bidirectional dc–dc converter with interleaving, soft-switching, and near critical conduction mode (near-CRM) operation. Systematic design and control methods are proposed to enhance the effectiveness of passive currents balancing between multiple interleaved phases without using individual phase current feedbacks. This paper first analyzes the zero voltage turn-on operation, including the turn-off energy diversion by the added snubber capacitor and the turn-off resonance models. Second, the intrinsic inverse co-relation between the phase current deviation and the resulting effective duty cycles variation is quantitatively formulated and modeled as a closed-loop mechanism that balances the currents passively. Then, the design constraints of the system parameters including the snubber capacitance, dead time, and valley currents of the near-CRM mode are formulated to guarantee the effectiveness of counteracting the current unbalance. Finally, a variable switching frequency control is proposed to actively control the valley current and maintain the current balancing effectiveness throughout the operating range. This paper proposes a novel active-clamp forward converter (ACFC) with a lossless-snubber on the secondary-side, which combines a resonant capacitor and a clamping diode with an output inductor in parallel. The conventional ACFC achieves zero-voltage-switching on switches of the primary-side during dead time for reducing the switching loss and voltage spike. Unfortunately, on the secondary-side of transformer, the voltage spike damages the free-wheeling diode and rectifier diode due to the reverse recovery current and junction-capacitor of the diode and leakage inductance of the transformer. This paper proposes a lossless-snubber on the secondary-side operation for reducing the voltage spike on the free-wheeling diode and forward-rectifier diode. Therefore, the converter proposed in this paper is suitable for high-output-current applications. This paper proposes a coordinated control strategy for the rotor-side converter (RSC) and the grid-side converter (GSC) of an LC-filtered doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) under distorted grid voltage condition, to eliminate the distortion of the total output current (including the stator current, the GSC current, and the filter capacitor current). For an LC-filtered DFIG connected to a distorted grid, the low-order current harmonics can freely flow into the filter capacitor thereby polluting the total output current, even when the stator current and the GSC current are both controlled as sinusoidal. Although this problem can be addressed by measuring the output current or the capacitor current, the extra current sensors are undesired in industrial applications. In this paper, a novel hybrid virtual impedance method is implemented in both the RSC and the GSC, to reshape the parallel impedance of the stator, the GSC and the filter capacitor to nearly infinite for low-order harmonics, thus, the freely flowing output current harmonics can be mitigated. Meanwhile, the low-order current harmonics required by the output current compensation can be flexibly distributed between the stator and the GSC according to their operating conditions, to disperse the side-effects on the drive train and the GSC, thereby better protecting the whole system. This paper proposes a novel variable-inertia emulation control (VIEC) scheme that enables voltage-source-converter based high-voltage DC (VSC-HVDC) transmission systems to flexibly support AC grid frequency stability like synchronous generators. The VIEC scheme allows us to extract the energy from the augmented DC capacitance for inertia emulation by controlling the DC voltage without affecting the stability of the AC system connected on the remote side. In particular, with the proposed VIEC scheme, the inertia time constant can be flexibly emulated and its value can be automatically adjusted according to the rate of change of grid frequency as well as grid frequency deviations. This leads to more effective inertial support across different timescales. Modal analysis is carried out to investigate the impacts of inertia and DC capacitance, and to obtain the optimal control parameters. This article develops a series of improved Z-source dc–dc converters to realize additional voltage pumping and high power density through two propositions. Proposition 1 develops two improved positive- and negative-connected Z-source dc–dc converters (IPZSC and INZSC), using the same number of components as in the existing voltage pumping Z-source converter. Based on Proposition 1, Proposition 2 proposes four novel embedded Z-source dc–dc converters (EZSCs) by placing the source in a specifically designed position, which realizes lower voltage stresses across capacitors. Various technical aspects of the proposed EZSCs, including operations, power losses, and small signal stability analyses are detailed in this paper. Besides, comparisons between the proposed series of improved Z-source dc–dc converters and other existing Z-source dc–dc converters are thoroughly made to demonstrate the better performance of the EZSCs. Although the use of a series capacitor increases the transmission line (TL) capacity, it inverts the voltage/current and creates a sub-harmonic frequency that results in unintended operation of the protection devices, which further decreases the transient stability under fault conditions. Restoring the transient stability requires an accurate diagnosis of faults in TLs, which further requires exploration of in-depth features. This imposes challenges for the existing approaches as they demand a large amount of data. In this paper, a self-attentive weight-sharing capsule network (WSCN) is proposed to achieve robust and high classification performance while utilizing a limited amount of data. The capsule network, with the weight-sharing mechanism delivers robust performance in detecting and classifying the faults in the TL domain. Simultaneously, the self-attention layer highlights the more dominant features that make the network work upon the limited data effectively. A Western-System-Coordinating-Council WSCC 9-bus and 3-machine test model, which was modified with the series capacitor was studied to quantify the robustness of the self-attention WSCN. The results were compared with those of others networks to confirm the explicit classification ability of the proposed network. This paper presents protection and fault location of wye-connected shunt capacitor banks used in medium or high voltage applications. The proposed method is sensitive to single element failure obtained by using voltage adaptive instantaneous superimposed current in each phase. The change in equivalent reactance computed using time-domain signals is used to find the number of failed capacitor element and types of fault. The location of the faulted capacitor is identified using sign of the voltage difference of the lower and upper halves of the shunt capacitor bank. The performance of the proposed method is tested for various cases including identical faults, simultaneous faults, system voltage unbalance in both single and double wye-connected shunt capacitor banks. This paper proposes an improved SOC balancing strategy for the modular energy storage system (ESS) based on low bandwidth communication (LBC) technology, aiming at solving the drawbacks of the conventional balancing strategy based on droop control. The proposed control scheme can improve the SOC balancing efficiency and remove the current deviation by using the SOC slope-adjusting and current-shifting approaches simultaneously. The average value of SOC can be derived through the LBC line, and the droop coefficient based on SOC can be controlled in the local control layer. Thus, the SOC of each sub-module can converge to the average SOC value in system dynamic process, and the balancing speed under the condition of low SOC difference between sub-modules can be improved. Furthermore, the current regulation performance in steady and transient states can be enhanced by using the proposed method. This paper presents a new single-source three-phase seven-level inverter with an inherent three-time voltage boosting capability for medium-voltage applications. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of two switched-capacitor (SC) networks with an added half-bridge module per phase. Each of such integrated SC networks requires a single capacitor associated with three active power switches. The three-time voltage boosting feature of the proposed topology can reduce the dc-link voltage requirements by 50% in comparison to the traditional neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors, active NPC (ANPC), hybrid clamped ANPC, and cascaded H-bridge topologies, and 75% to advanced ANPC topologies. It can also reduce the number of required switches and capacitors as well as their voltage stresses compared to those state-of-the-art topologies reported in the literature. By integrating “n” number of added SC networks in the proposed seven-level basic topology, the number of output voltage levels can be extended to 2n+3 per phase. A finite control set model predictive control algorithm is also derived to control the converter in both the active and reactive power exchanges modes without distorting the generated grid current quality. The capacitor voltage balancing is inherent in the proposed topology, and thus, there is no need for any additional voltage balancing circuit, which further reduces the control complexity. An improved two-stage model predictive current control (MPCC) for three-phase three-level converters in the paper, which can simultaneously achieve common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction, effective dc-link capacitor voltage control, and decreased computational burden, is proposed. Compared to the other current control strategies, it has the capability of handling multiple control objectives and possesses a simple structure. Furthermore, it greatly reduces the CMV since the peak CMVs of all the candidate voltage vectors are constrained to be less than one sixth of the dc-link voltage. In addition, an optimal two-stage voltage vector selection mechanism is employed in the proposed method. It helps to significantly reduce the computational complexity. A dynamic model of a battery is required for the appropriate real-time control during charging/discharging process. Present paper considers the development of nonlinear Dynamic Equivalent Electric Circuit Model (DEECM) of a Valve Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) battery based on the data obtained through the experimentation and the available datasheet information. Cases of charging, discharging, and the self-discharging are considered for 12V, 26Ah VRLA battery at room temperature. Accordingly, experimental ${\boldsymbol{v}} - {\boldsymbol{i}}$ characteristics of the battery are used to express the nonlinear model parameters as a function of measurable battery current and estimated open-circuit voltage as a part of parameter estimation. In this paper, a novel deashing method is proposed to prepare polypropylene (PP) materials with different ash contents (60–500 ppm). Effects of the ash on dielectric and energy storage characteristics of PP in polymer film capacitors are studied. The experimental results reveal that a low content of ash will help to improve the dielectric properties. Compared to the sample with 500 ppm of ash content, the PP film with 60 ppm ash possesses a higher breakdown strength (587.1 kV/mm), a lower DC conductivity (1.12 ×10−14 S/m) and dielectric loss factor (3 ×10−4). In addition, the energy storage property also shows a remarkabe improvement, the discharge energy density can be up to 3.22 J/cm3 and the discharge efficiency remains at a high level. After the purification, the decline of the ash content in PP prevents the local electric field distortion and enhances the breakdown strength, which is beneficial for the improvement of the discharge energy density. Meanwhile, the reduction in the number of carriers ionized by the ash weakens the transport behavior and reduces the conductivity. This paper considers the co-operation of distributed generators (DGs), battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and voltage regulating devices for integrated peak shaving and voltage regulation in distribution grids through a co-optimization framework, which aims to minimize the operational costs while fulfilling the operational constraints of network and devices. To account for the uncertainties of load demand and generation, we then convert the co-optimization model into a two-stage stochastic program where state-of-charge (SoC) trajectories of BESSs and operation of voltage regulating devices are optimized at the first stage for day-ahead scheduling, while the reactive powers of DGs and BESSs are left at the second stage for potential intra-day scheduling to handle short-term voltage issues. The medium voltage direct current (MVDC) is a promising direction of future shipboard power system (SPS). However, one of the main limitations encountered in its development is the fault isolation of DC side. This paper reveals the evolution process of short-circuit fault in typical MVDC SPS through equivalent circuit and transient simulation. Based on the analysis of protection needs, a superconducting current-limiting switch (SCLS) topology is proposed, which includes one superconducting coupled coil and two DC circuit breakers (DCCBs). The models of SCLS is built on MATLAB/Simulink and the current limiting principle and current sharing principle of SCLS are verified. DC fault is one of the most important and critical challenges for stable operation of DC microgrids. Resistive type superconducting fault current limiter (R-SFCL) is an ideal protective solution to limit DC fault current. However, the effect of only using SFCL may further deteriorate the DC bus voltage stability. This paper first analyzes the effect of R-SFCL on DC microgrid under different operation modes and different fault locations, and then presents a coordinated control method of SMES-battery hybrid energy storage system (HESS) and SFCL in ground fault. This method can not only reduce the fault current level but also regulate the DC bus voltage. DC fault protection is the bottleneck that restricts the development of modular multilevel converter based high voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) system. Superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) is an ideal protection device that can significantly limit short circuit current and enhance the fault tolerance ability of MMC-HVDC system. At present, several topologies of SFCLs have been proposed, but there is no systematical study of their current-limiting characteristics in MMC-HVDC. This paper studies the development process of DC short-circuit faults in MMC-HVDC system, and analyzes its demand for fault current limiting. Then, resistive type, saturated iron core type and hybrid type SFCL are modeled and their limiting effect of critical fault current under DC pole-to-pole fault is tested. By comparison, the current-limiting characteristics of three types of SFCL are concluded. Results show that resistive SFCL has best performance in steady state, while saturated iron core SFCL has best performance in transient state.
