Several miniaturized viscometers, or microviscometers, have been developed exploiting numerous rapid prototyping techniques. Among them, paper microstrips, famously known as microfluidic paper-based analytical devices ($\mu $ PADs), have become popular due to their cost-efficacy, simple fabrication, fast response, and easily disposable. Many fabrication methods are existing to develop paper microstrips. Herein, an alternative fabrication method is proposed where fused deposition modeling (FDM)-based 3-D printer (3DP) has been employed using polycaprolactone (PCL) filament. F, image processing has been utilized to measure viscosity in such microfluidic domain. Viscosity was calculated by measuring the time taken by the fluid to cover a fixed length between two spots in the microchannel based on the programed and color-coded regions-of-interest. The image processing program was developed considering the change in the gray scale in the virtual region of interests (ROIs) in the microchannel during the fluid flow in the paper microstrips. A 3-D printed handheld platform, containing raspberry pi with on-board camera and display, was developed to execute the image processing and automate the entire work flow. It is well established that copper sulfide is formed due to reaction of sulfur with copper conductors in transformers and reactors. However, there is very little experimental evidence to demonstrate copper sulfide diffusion into bulk of paper. Diffusion experiments have been carried out on three samples of kraft paper having different thickness. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy has been used to investigate the possibilities of copper sulfide diffusion into bulk of paper. This study has demonstrated that copper sulfide can diffuse into the bulk of paper leading to either increase or decrease in free volume of paper. The reasons for changes in free volume of paper due to copper sulfide deposits are explained. The consequences of copper sulfide diffusion on PD, voltage-current characteristics under ac and volume resistivity are discussed. Oil-paper insulation ageing of transformer has characteristics of spatial locality due to uneven temperature distribution. The transformer is sealed, it is difficult to obtain the local ageing state of oil-paper insulation by sampling directly. Currently, there are no effective detection method to detect the insulation state of local regions. The oil-immersed paper resistivity inversion method can nondestructively assess the local state of oil-paper insulation. However, the current inversion methods still have shortcomings and need to be improved. In this paper, combining the back propagation neural network (BPNN) and Newton downhill method (NDM), an improved inversion method is proposed to optimize the current inversion method, so as to reduce the effect of initial value on it and make calculated results converge better. Finally, a 3D 10 kV transformer model is established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The resistivity calculated by the improved method show that the method can provide initial resistivity values for technicians and improve the convergence and accuracy of current inversion method, which is more suitable for extending to the engineering practice. The effects of furfural generation and partitioning on the aging assessment of oil-paper insulation of power equipment were investigated. Oil-paper samples with various furfural contents were prepared using an accelerated thermal aging experiment. The mass of the furfural generated during the aging of insulation paper was calculated and used to establish the quantitative equation between the accumulated furfural and the degree of polymerization (DP) of the insulation paper. Results showed that the reciprocal of the DP value was linearly related to the amount of furfural generated by the insulation paper. Effects of temperature, moisture, and temperature on the furfural partitioning ratio between oil and paper were analyzed using a furfural partitioning experiment, and a furfural partitioning model was established. Results showed that the furfural partitioning ratio in oil was positively correlated with temperature and moisture but negatively correlated with the DP of the insulation paper. A method for assessing the age of an insulation paper by integrating the furfural generation and partitioning models was proposed and applied on a 500-kV reactor that was returned for factory maintenance. It is state-of-the-art to describe the dielectric behavior of an insulation material by its permittivity and its specific electric conductivity in order to estimate the dielectric stress of an insulation system. Thus, the electric field at DC voltage stress is determined according to the stationary electrical conduction field with the electric conductivity of the insulation materials. However, at oil-insulated arrangements a higher field strength in front of bare metal electrodes at high DC voltage stress occurs, which is not explainable with this model. Therefore, a charge carrier-based approach is presented to describe the dielectric behavior of the oil-paper insulation. It describes the movement of charge carriers and their effect on the electric field strength. Their drift leads to an accumulation of charge carriers in front of electrodes which results in a higher field strength in these areas, which can be calculated numerically using the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equation system. Compared to the conductivity-based model fundamental differences can be shown. Breakdown experiments qualitatively confirm the expectations according to the charge carrier-based approach. The results show that the charge carrier-based field distribution has to be considered for modelling the electrical field strength distribution at high DC voltage stress. Dielectric response testing is a non-destructive insulation testing method that is widely used for assessing insulation properties. Time-and frequency-domain dielectric spectra are closely dependent on insulation conditions. In comparison with the time-domain spectrum, the frequency-domain dielectric response under sweep sinusoidal excitation has a stronger anti-interference capability and a more comprehensive insulation information. However, the wide application of the measurement using the frequency-domain dielectric response under sweep sinusoidal excitation is hindered by its long testing time. A possible solution is obtaining the frequency-domain spectrum by transforming the tested time-domain spectrum, such that the time- and frequency-domain spectra can be obtained in one measurement. Polarization depolarizing current measurement under DC excitation is a common time-domain testing method for time-frequency-domain conversion. However, such conversion is valid only at extremely low frequencies (less than 0.05 Hz), indicating a slight overlap with the frequency range of the measurement using the frequency-domain dielectric response under sweep sinusoidal excitation. Moreover, the effective conversion frequency range cannot be controlled manually, and the measurement using time-domain dielectric response under DC excitation is hindered by the anti-interference capability due to micro polarization-depolarization current. In addition, scholars have found nonlinearity in a partial insulation system. As the bridge of the traditional time-frequency-domain conversion, a linear extended Debye model cannot accurately reflect insulation materials that exhibit nonlinear characteristics, thereby further limiting the application scope of time-frequency-domain conversion. This study introduces the system identification theory to demonstrate the problems existing in the traditional time-frequency-domain conversion and proposes an improved time-domain testing method based on the previous work. The improved method extends the effective frequency range of time-frequency-domain conversion and emphasizes the comprehensive analysis of the insulation by combining the measured time-domain spectrum and the frequency-domain spectrum conversed from time-domain data. This paper proposes a method for estimation of tanδ of cellulosic parts in oil-paper insulation from frequency domain spectroscopy based on equivalent circuit model of oil-paper insulation in real-life transformers. Existing literature shows that overall condition of oil-paper insulation in transformer can be assessed by conventional frequency domain spectroscopy. Also, the condition of oil can be separately and easily predicted through analyzing its dielectric properties by taking out the oil samples from transformer. However, it is quite difficult to assess the dielectric properties of cellulosic parts in oil-paper insulation as it cannot be directly accessed from outside for an operating transformer. Considering the aforesaid fact, this paper presents a segregated equivalent circuit model of composite oil-paper insulation that can separately estimate the tanδ profiles for oil as well as cellulosic parts. The tanδ profiles of cellulosic parts obtained from the equivalent circuit model have been validated experimentally. The temperature distribution is vital to the lifetime and reliability of converter transformer bushings. However, the temperature distribution of epoxy impregnated paper converter bushings under a certain current has usually been calculated through the two dimensional model, without considering the heat convection and radiation effects. In this paper, using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element method (FEM) analysis, a 3-D electromagnetic-fluid-thermal analysis method has been proposed. With the considering of heat conduction, heat convection and radiation, the temperature distribution of the converter transformer bushing has been simulated according to the actual operating environment. The temperature and velocity distribution of the converter transformer bushing has been obtained. Moreover, the simulation results have been compared with the experimental results to verify the accuracy of the simulation method. The simulation results, especially for the inner conductor, external conductor and the epoxy impregnated paper, are very close to the experimental results and the maximum temperature difference percentage is within 10 %, which indicates the accuracy and effectiveness of the electromagnetic-fluid-thermal analysis method proposed. Dielectric response measurements in either time or frequency domain are being assessed in modern times for condition monitoring of transformer oil-paper insulation. Proper interpretation of the dielectric test results requires understanding of the physical processes taking place in the insulation structure during such tests. It is thus necessary to establish proper mathematical and analytical formulations of the insulation behavior. Dielectric response functions of various forms based on the classical ?single relaxation time? Debye model have been proposed by various researchers to model the experimental data. In complex dielectrics, it seems however, that the overall response be represented by a distribution of relaxation times (or frequencies), rather than a single ?average? response characteristic. The present contribution provides in brief, the mathematical background for estimating the dielectric response functions used so far for modeling dielectric response measurement data. Function representing distribution of relaxation frequencies has also been estimated. The Last decade saw significant growth in the digital terrestrial television (DTT) subscribers. The High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted signal is implied by the large fluctuations in its amplitude, which is a serious issue in the contemporary and next generation DTT broadcasting systems. These large fluctuations prevent feeding the high power amplifier (HPA) at an operating point near its non-linear (NL) saturation region, thereby lowering its power efficiency. For a better future, energy-efficient green communications is the need of hour. This paper focuses on digital predistortion (DPD), which is among the widely used techniques for HPA linearization in order to minimize the NL effects. DPD technique requires a feedback signal. This paper proposes a novel adding signal-based digital predistortion, where the output of the HPA is gradually linearized by adding a signal at the input in an iterative manner. By Taylor series approximation, the DPD problem can be posed as a convex one. We prove that a tighter upper bound exists for the convergence factor and instead of directly solving the convex problem, we pick a convergence factor value within its bounds that offers a good trade-off between convergence speed and residual error value. This paper proposed a simulation method for the charge transport in single-layer oil-paper insulation. The method of transient upstream finite-element method (FEM) is derived in order to calculate the time variation of charge densities in medium. The numerical simulation of charge transport in the single-layer oil-paper insulation is realized by applying the transient upstream FEM to the transport equations of bipolar charges. With reasonable microparameter, the charge transport in an experimental object is simulated. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental data. A bent model of oil-paper insulation is analyzed to study the charge distribution under the actual condition. The paper presents new diagnostic method applied to assess aging degree for paper-oil insulation used in professional electrical power device, primarily including medium and high power transformers. The described method is based on modified diagnostics using the recovery voltage effect occurring in dielectrics (RVM ? Recovery Voltage Methods). Modification of the RVM method applied so far, which is now used only to assess moistening degree for paper-oil insulation in power transformers, consists in a new parametric analysis of recovery voltage time characteristics. Simulation and experimental tests carried out in laboratory conditions for adequately prepared insulation samples have proven that the time-constant of recovery voltage decay (?R_MIN) is the most susceptible parameter as regards quantitative change in the function of aging of the examined insulation. This conclusion is also confirmed by statistical studies, in which a multi-parameter variance analysis method has been applied. An original equivalent circuit diagram of the insulation has been used to simulate aging degree of paper-oil insulation samples in numerical tests. This work investigates the effect of alternating current partial discharge (AC PD) byproducts on the dielectric frequency response (DFR) of oil-paper insulation comprising of a small cavity, in the frequency range of 1.0 mHz to 1.0 kHz. The investigations were done by utilizing experimental results in combination with a Finite Element Method (FEM) model. The results presented in this paper show that ageing by-products in the cavity (PD stressed volume) alone will not result into the change in DFR of oil-paper insulation. According to simulation results, the significant change in the DFR results is mainly caused by PD by-products (positive and negative charges, and electrons) which tend to conduct or diffuse into the bulk of oil-paper insulation. The change in a dissipation factor curve due to PD by-products was observed to occur mainly in the middle and low frequency regions. The results indicate that the dissipation factor curves in the middle and low frequency regions depend on the level of PD by-products in oil and paper, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The service life of a transformer is determined by the condition of its oil?paper insulation. A modified Cole?Cole model was introduced to describe the frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) curves based on the classic Debye relaxation model and thereby accurately determined the ageing state of the insulation of a power transformer using FDS. Oil?paper insulation samples with different ageing states are prepared under laboratory conditions, and a characteristic parameter is extracted to quantify their ageing states after a detailed investigation of the frequency domain dielectric properties of the samples. Results reveal that the modified Cole?Cole model, including the ? relaxation components, dc and hopping conductivity components, can be employed to effectively model the frequency dielectric characteristics of oil?paper insulation. Furthermore, the extracted characteristic parameter from this model, ??, can be utilized in the quantitative evaluation of the ageing states of transformer insulation. In this paper the accelerated aging experiments of oil-paper insulation are carried out to simulate the oil-paper aging process under normal thermal aging process. On the basis of the results of accelerated aging experiments, how the deviation degree of aging status change under the same aging factors is studied, and a method to calculate the failure probability due to the loss of mechanical strength of the insulation is put forward. This paper presents an approach for economic assessment on insulation diagnosis through accelerated aging experiments. The foundation of this approach for economic assessment on insulation diagnosis is to establish condition simulation method of triple relationships between condition status, aging time and failure probability according to data from accelerated aging experiments. The conclusions are made that the economic and technical factors can affect the optimum life cycle cost of each maintenance strategy, which consequently affects the economic feasibility of condition-based maintenance strategies. A substantial quantity of testing has been performed on the degradation of paper insulation over the decades. The aim being to better educate the electrical industry on how to best operate expensive assets, such as transformers. The longevity of paper insulation is frequently tested using accelerated ageing experiments, where the effects of temperature and the chemical environment on paper lifespan can be studied. Such research has resulted in paper life expectancy curves being published by the IEEE and the IEC. The investigations tend to use sealed vessels. However, the disadvantage of using this method is that the water content of the paper changes during the ageing process which then changes the ageing rate. In these ageing experiments the water and oxygen content was controlled using a special test rig to compare the ageing rate to previous work and to determine the ageing effect of paper by combining temperature, water content of paper and oxygen content of the oil. We found that the rate of paper ageing can be more accurately determined by controlling the water and oxygen during the experiment which then produced noticeable changes in predicting life expectancy. The presence of moisture in oil impregnated paper insulation (OIP) is detrimental to its long time performance. Until recently, it was thought insulation ageing was only a function of temperature and electrical stress. It has now been realized that moisture in all its forms causes rapid degradation of the electrical and mechanical properties with time. In this study, insulation paper samples were conditioned for desired level of moisture and were impregnated with premium quality transformer oil. The oil impregnated samples with 1 to 3 % moisture content were aged at 90 to 130°C. The indices for determining the extent of ageing considered in this work are degree of polymerization (DP), furan, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide content. These quantities were monitored throughout the ageing experimental run. End-of-life (EOL) criterion used here is the reduction in the value of DP. Dielectric parameters of insulation used in High voltage equipments like power transformers are dependent on insulation size and geometry. As a result parameters evaluated from the model of one insulation system finds limited use in predicting the condition of other. Poles calculated from branch parameters of insulation model, on the other hand are independent of insulation geometry. However such technique requires accurate modeling of dielectric response function. Conventional Debye model does not consider the effect of temperature gradient that exists across the length of the insulation during its operation. In the present paper it is shown that for more accurate modeling and better understanding of dielectric response of oil-paper insulation, a new model which considers the effect of temperature gradient on insulation properties, is necessary. The present paper reports a methodology that is capable of identifying such a model using PDC measurement data. Reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) as a subset of the reliability assessment problems, is a powerful tool for enhancing reliability, and subsequently achieving the customers’ higher satisfaction. However, deterministic RCM models could scarcely guarantee global optimality and feasibility of their solutions with real-world uncertain failure rates. In this paper, a robust model is proposed to consider the impact of failure rate uncertainty in the RCM scheduling problem, followed by a two-stage robust model development. The two-stage robust model is solved using Benders decomposition (BD) and outer approximation (OA) algorithms. The proposed model and solution method are applied to both educational RBTS2 system and real-size Finnish Distribution System, followed by demonstration of a higher financial and reliability performance, compared to that of the deterministic model. Multi-terminal modular multilevel converter (MMC) power transmission is the current development trend in DC transmission. However, owing to its fast control and dynamic characteristics, it may interact with the other inductive devices or the grid and cause stability issues. This paper describes the use of the impedance analysis method in the frequency domain to analyze system stability. First, the multi-harmonic linearization method is used to model the impedance of a three-terminal MMC system. To make the model more accurate, the modeling considers the effect of frequency coupling caused by an asymmetric controller and the AC sampling site position. This paper then proposes an equivalent method of the grid impedance for the three-terminal system that can accurately judge the stability of the grid-connected system when the AC side is coupled. This work provides a theoretical basis for the prediction and suppression of the oscillation of MMC grid-connected system with coupling on the AC side. DC-DC converters are needed for the future development of high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids, as they allow to interconnect lines with different voltages and topologies. The dc-dc converters can increase the grid controllability adding power flow control, voltage regulation and/or fault blocking capability. The dc modular multilevel converter (dc-MMC) is a non-isolated solution proposed to interconnect HVDC systems with the same line topology. This paper proposes a new dc-MMC with a control strategy, which allows the converter to interconnect different line topologies (e.g., rigid bipole connected to a symmetric monopole). The paper presents the different line topologies in HVDC installations. Then, a mathematical model with a variable transformation is proposed for the new dc-dc converter. A control structure is proposed and implemented in Matlab/Simulink using an average arm model and simplified dc grids. The Rogowski coil transducer's integrator will amplify the transmission error, which may lead to mal-operation of the relay. In this paper, a novel method of line relay based on the differential output of Rogowski coil is proposed. Besides, an improved fast distance relay based on the differential output of Rogowski coil is presented. Based on the equal transfer process of transmission lines(ETPTL), the voltage signal should be processed by the virtual Rogowski coil to solve the inconsistent transfer problem between voltage and current. Furthermore, this paper also presents the reconstruction method of voltage at the fault point and the least-square algorithm to solve the R-L differential equation, so as to improve the algorithm accuracy. Furthermore, the equal transfer process error of the virtual Rogowski coil is analyzed in the paper, and the design principle of low pass filter is also proposed. Simulation results and experiment results demonstrate that the improved fast distance relay scheme has high operation speed, which is signed prior to other distance relay schemes. This paper investigates the transient stability of power systems co-dominated by different types of grid-forming (GFM) devices. Synchronous generators (SGs and VSGs) and droop-controlled inverters are typical GFM devices in modern power systems. SGs/VSGs are able to provide inertia while droop-controlled inverters are generally inertialess. The transient stability of power systems dominated by homogeneous GFM devices has been extensively studied. Regarding the hybrid system jointly dominated by heterogeneous GFM devices, the transient stability is rarely reported. This paper aims to fill this gap. It is found that the synchronization behavior of the hybrid system can be described by a second-order motion equation, resembling the swing equation of SGs. Moreover, two significant differences from conventional power systems are discovered. The first is that the droop control dramatically enhances the damping effect, greatly affecting the transient stability region. The second is that the frequency state variable exhibits a jump at the moment of fault disturbances, thus impacting the post-fault initial-state location and stability assessment. The underlying mechanism behind the two new characteristics is clarified and the impact on the transient stability performance is analyzed and verified. There is an opportunity in modern power systems to explore the demand flexibility by incentivizing consumers with dynamic prices. In this paper, we quantify demand flexibility using an efficient tool called time-varying elasticity, whose value may change depending on the prices and decision dynamics. This tool is particularly useful for evaluating the demand response potential and system reliability. Recent empirical evidences have highlighted some abnormal features when studying demand flexibility, such as delayed responses and vanishing elasticities after price spikes. Existing methods fail to capture these complicated features because they heavily rely on some predefined (often over-simplified) regression expressions. Instead, this paper proposes a model-free methodology to automatically and accurately derive the optimal estimation pattern. We further develop a two-stage estimation process with Siamese long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. Here, a LSTM network encodes the price response, while the other network estimates the time-varying elasticities. In the case study, the proposed framework and models are validated to achieve higher overall estimation accuracy and better description for various abnormal features when compared with the state-of-the-art methods. The paper introduces the concept of complex frequency. The imaginary part of the complex frequency is the variation with respect of a synchronous reference of the local bus frequency as commonly defined in power system studies. The real part is defined based on the variation of the voltage magnitude. The latter term is crucial for the correct interpretation and analysis of the variation of the frequency at each bus of the network. The paper also develops a set of differential equations that describe the link between complex powers and complex frequencies at network buses in transient conditions. No simplifications are assumed except for the usual approximations of the models utilized for the transient stability analysis of power systems. In this paper, we propose a new mathematical model for power flow problem based on the linear and nonlinear matrix inequality theory. We start with rectangular model of power flow (PF) problem and then reformulate it as a Bilinear Matrix Inequality (BMI) model. A Theorem is proved which is able to convert this BMI model to a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) model along with One Nonconvex Quadratic Constraint (ONQC). Our proposed LMI-ONQC model for PF problem has only one single nonconvex quadratic constraint irrespective of the network size, while in the rectangular and BMI models the number of nonconvex constraints grows as the network size grows. This interesting property leads to reduced complexity level in our LMI-ONQC model which in turn makes it easier to solve for finding a PF solution. The non-conservativeness, iterative LMI solvability, well-defined and easy-to-understand geometry and pathwise connectivity of feasibility region are other important properties of proposed LMI-ONQC model which are discussed in this paper. An illustrative two-bus example is carefully studied to show different properties of our LMI-ONQC model. We have also tested our LMI-ONQC model on 30 different power-system cases including four ill-conditioned systems and compared it with a group of existing approaches. A large number of non-linear hardware and control units exists in power electronic system used in grid connected devices. The analytical transient stability analysis of grid-connected converters presents numerous difficulties. A common method to tackle this problem is the stability analysis using Lyapunov’s method. By applying this method, difficulties arise not only from finding a suitable Lyapunov function, but also from checking the constraint of Lyapunov stability. If the appropriate Lyapunov function is a high-order polynomial, it is very challenging to test if it meets the constraints of Lyapunov stability in certain regions. In this paper, the sum-of-squares programming method is used to obtain the estimation of a converter’s domain of attraction with a relatively small number of iterations compared to classically applied methods, such as the Monte Carlo method. Forced ventilated underground installations are challenging to design due to the complex mathematics of turbulent fluid flow. Previous methods have tackled this problem, but only recently, the effect of confinement on a single cable has been considered. In this paper, the effect of cable confinement on the practical case of ventilated trefoil installations is investigated. The complete Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) problem is solved using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations and then validated by laboratory experiments using pipes. FEM simulations are then used to vary the current, the wind velocity, and the distance of the trefoil from the tunnel wall to get a comprehensive picture of the phenomena. This data is used to create a new empirical equation for the Nusselt number for a wide range of operating conditions. The principle of similitude is validated for a scaled-down model of a large tunnel and then used to analyze the thermal rating of tunnels. The new equation improves the IEC standard equations by accounting for the effect of cable confinement on trefoil installations. An important finding of this paper is that a lower maximum permissible current rating is obtained, which if ignored can present a serious risk for thermal damage. Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) is a comparison based method and is useful to identify the mechanical fault in transformer winding only when the ‘healthy’ or ‘reference’ magnitude response is available. But, in practice, ‘healthy’ response may not be always available and the subsequent FRA measurement alone also cannot detect the fault. This is one serious limitation for conventional FRA method and the desired solution is still far away. To this effect, this paper presents an innovative way of measuring the frequency responses of transformer winding with two equal and opposite polarity sinusoidal excitations from two ends. For viability test, the present work is limited to fault-detection only in a single isolated uniformly-wound transformer winding followed by verification on an actual single-phase autotransformer. The two equal and opposite polarity excitations for such winding are likely to impose a virtual ground at the centre and hence the two admittances measured from the two source-ends are likely to be identical. Two admittances also get dissimilar for a fault in transformer winding and therefore the fault could be identified simply by measuring and comparing these two responses in absence of ‘healthy’ response. This paper proposes an accurate impedance model for line commutated converter (LCC) in the stationary frame. The commutation overlap process caused by the transformer leakage inductance complicates the modeling for LCC. Traditional impedance models are derived in positive sequence and negative sequence frame based on the simplified commutation overlap process, which degrades the modeling accuracy and limits the description of frequency coupling. This paper systematically analyzes the effects of the commutation overlap process on the impedance model, and the impedance model with the accurate commutation overlap process is established in the dq-frame. For clearly revealing the frequency coupling phenomenon of the LCC, the complex space vector is employed to extend the impedance model in the dq-frame to the complex αβ-frame. A closed-loop model on PSCAD/EMTDC is used to verify the proposed impedance model in the time-domain and the frequency-domain. This paper addresses the frequency oscillation problem in a parallel-inverter-based grid-connected system. Angular frequency interactions between inverters and the grid exhibit various numbers of complicated characteristics that seriously threaten the connected power system's stable operation. This paper proposes a unified frequency oscillation method analysis to investigate the oscillation problem in a multi-VSG grid-connected system. In this method, the power control model of each grid-connected inverter is equivalent to a two-terminal network by analogy method, which can be described as a “current source” connected in parallel with a reciprocal of “admittance” and then joined in series with a joint of “admittance.” Next, considering the influence of grid impedance, the model of the whole grid-connected system is established to reveal the mechanism of multi-VSG angular frequency oscillation. Subsequently, the influence factors of frequency oscillation and its variation law are analyzed through transfer functions, which provide an essential theoretical method for solving the frequency oscillation problem in the current multi-inverter grid-connected engineering application. In this paper, we analyze the existence and stability of equilibrium of dc micro-grids under the master-slave control (where some distributed generations (DGs) are under droop control with dual-loop (Droop-DGs) and some DGs are under MPPT control (MPPT-DGs)). Firstly, the power-flow equation of the dc micro-grids under master-slave control with CPLs is obtained. Then, we transform the solvability of the power-flow equation into the existence of a fixed point for a contraction mapping. Based on Banach's fixed point theorem, a sufficient condition to guarantee the existence of the power-flow solution in dc micro-grids is derived. The condition derived in this paper is not only useful for master-slave control but also for droop control. Besides, to calculate the power-flow solution, an iterative algorithm with exponential convergence rate is proposed. Secondly, we use a singular perturbation model to predict the qualitative behavior of the system near the equilibrium point. By analyzing eigenvalues of the boundary layer system and reduced-order system Jacobian matrix, the robust stable analytic conditions of the system are obtained. The effect of the sampling delay on the system stability is analyzed, the robust stability condition is obtained by using linear matrix inequality. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted communication appears as one of the potential enablers for sixth generation (6G) wireless networks by providing a new degree of freedom in the system design to telecom operators. Particularly, RIS-empowered millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems can be a remedy to provide broadband and ubiquitous connectivity. This paper aims to fill an important gap in the open literature by providing a physical, accurate, open-source, and widely applicable RIS channel model for mmWave frequencies. Our model is not only applicable in various indoor and outdoor environments but also includes the physical characteristics of wireless propagation in the presence of RISs by considering 5G radio channel conditions. Various deployment scenarios are presented for RISs and useful insights are provided for system designers from the perspective of potential RIS use-cases and their efficient positioning. The scenarios in which the use of an RIS makes a big difference or might not have a big impact on the communication system performance, are revealed. This paper utilizes the Newton Raphson (NR) iterative algorithm to solve a detailed heat balance equation for overhead transmission conductors, for the purpose of calculating a Dynamic Line Rating or temperature-dependent impedance using real-time or forecasted weather data. Provided ambient weather conditions, conductor parameters and electrical current passing through the conductor, a starting guess is formed and the iterative solution method arrives upon a solution within a preset solution tolerance. A simple method to approximate the Rayleigh Number / Nusselt Number and Reynolds Number / Nusselt Number relationships is proposed to ensure successful convergence. The paper performs a thorough, numeric electrothermal conductor simulation to demonstrate proper solution convergence. This exercise identifies a minimum conductor temperature rise necessary for the solution method to converge successfully. Error related to the minimum starting conductor temperature rise, and error introduced by the approximated air property functions is illustrated. The degradation of the electrical contact in a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) is closely related to overheating at the contact. However, the disconnector contact is one of the hot contacts in GIS. Therefore, in this paper, the finite element method was used to solve the three-dimensional multiphysics coupling temperature rise field and flow field in the Single Phase in One Tank (SPIOT) type GIS disconnector under different operating conditions. From the perspective of temperature rise field and flow field, this paper analyzed the temperature rise characteristics under different working conditions and explored the feasibility of the direct application of air, CO2 and C4F7N/CO2 mixed gas to an electrical device. The disconnector temperature rise experiment platform was then built to verify the simulation. The results showed that the temperature rise field and the flow field distribution were similar in four gas environments. SF6 gas had the smallest temperature rise, followed by C4F7N/CO2 mixed gas, and the temperature rise of CO2 and air was relatively large. Therefore, from the perspective of the temperature rise field and flow field, it was feasible to directly apply C4F7N/CO2 mixed gas to an electrical device in order to meet insulation requirements. This paper proposes a new method for joint design of radiofrequency (RF) and gradient waveforms in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and applies it to the design of 3D spatially tailored saturation and inversion pulses. The joint design of both waveforms is characterized by the ODE Bloch equations, to which there is no known direct solution. Existing approaches therefore typically rely on simplified problem formulations based on, e.g., the small-tip approximation or constraining the gradient waveforms to particular shapes, and often apply only to specific objective functions for a narrow set of design goals (e.g., ignoring hardware constraints). This paper develops and exploits an auto-differentiable Bloch simulator to directly compute Jacobians of the (Bloch-simulated) excitation pattern with respect to RF and gradient waveforms. This approach is compatible with arbitrary sub-differentiable loss functions, and optimizes the RF and gradients directly without restricting the waveform shapes. For computational efficiency, we derive and implement explicit Bloch simulator Jacobians (approximately halving computation time and memory usage). To enforce hardware limits (peak RF, gradient, and slew rate), we use a change of variables that makes the 3D pulse design problem effectively unconstrained; we then optimize the resulting problem directly using the proposed auto-differentiation framework. We demonstrate our approach with two kinds of 3D excitation pulses that cannot be easily designed with conventional approaches: Outer-volume saturation (90° flip angle), and inner-volume inversion. This paper presents a distributionally robust network-constrained unit commitment (DR-NCUC) model considering AC network modeling and uncertainties of demands and renewable productions. The proposed model characterizes uncertain parameters using a data-driven ambiguity set constructed by training samples. The non-convex AC power flow equations are approximated by convex quadratic and McCormick relaxations. Since the proposed min-max-min DR-NCUC problem cannot be solved directly by available solvers, a new decomposition algorithm with proof of convergence is reported in this paper. The master problem of this algorithm is solved using both primal and dual cuts, while the max-min sub-problem is solved using the primal-dual hybrid gradient method, obviating the need for using duality theory. Also, an active set strategy is proposed to enhance the tractability of the decomposition algorithm by ignoring the subset of inactive constraints. The proposed model is applied to a 6-bus test system and the IEEE 118-bus test system under different conditions. These case studies illustrate the performance of the proposed DR-NCUC model to characterize uncertainties and the superiority of the proposed decomposition algorithm over other decomposition approaches using either primal or dual cuts. Aging asset management requires careful consideration of end-of-life of any asset. This is particularly serious with aging infrastructure which may require complete replacement of a large asset which has a long lead time. In many current End-of-Life analysis approaches to calculate unavailability, the period of interest is sub-divided into yearly cycles with the assumption that the asset is available at the start of the year. Although this assumption is adequate if the replacement time for the asset occurs within the year, with longer lead times this can create excessively optimistic availabilities. This paper presents an improved probabilistic tool for risk assessment due to End-of-Life failure unavailability which overcomes this deficiency. The End-of-Life methodology proposed in this paper is required when aging assets have long lead times to replacement and so the capital investment decision must be made several years ahead. The method is applied to evaluate the End-of-Life unavailability of Manitoba Hydro Bipole II HVdc converters. The results are corroborated using Monte Carlo simulation. Aiming at the low-frequency oscillation (LFO) phenomenon in high-speed railways, this paper proposes a feedback linearized virtual inertia control (VIC) strategy of the traction converter based on a sliding mode observer (SMO) to improve the robustness of the system and suppress the occurrence of LFO. First, to optimize the total harmonic distortion of the traction grid-side current, the inner loop controller is designed as the feedback linearization control. Then, the voltage outer loop is designed as a combination of the VIC designed in this paper and SMO, which enhances the system inertia and reduces the impact of external interference on the system, while reducing the controller's demand for electrical power on the DC-side. Furthermore, a small-signal model is established to analyze the stability of the single-phase vehicle-grid system under the proposed control. The influence of the control parameters on stability is discussed in detail. Finally, the comparison of software simulation and hardware-in-the-loop experimental results between traditional PI control, feedback linearization control, feedback+SMO, feedback+VIC and the proposed control method shows that the proposed control has better dynamic and static characteristics, and can effectively inhibit the occurrence of LFO. Identifying sources of subsynchronous resonance (SSR) is crucial for understanding and mitigating incidents. Recent studies have shown that SSR impedance and power are effective indicators that can identify an SSR source. However, the calculation of two indexes requires SSR voltage and current phasors as the inputs, which are not directly available from existing online monitoring systems. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel method to calculate SSR impedance/power based on synchrophasors provided by a wide-area monitoring system. As a result, the online detection of SSR sources is enabled. Through mathematical derivation, it is revealed that a synchrophasor under SSR is dominated by four modes: two from the fundamental frequency and two from the SSR frequency. The problem thus can be transformed to a modal parameter extraction (MPE). Two classic MPE algorithms, Prony analysis and the matrix pencil method, are employed in this paper to extract the SSR parameters and calculate the SSR impedance/power. Their performances are verified using synthetic signals and electromagnetic transient simulations. Furthermore, the method is applied to an actual SSR incident involving 23 wind farms. Power flow (PF) flexibility in the multi-terminal HVDC (MT-HVDC) grids is a thought-provoking issue. It leads to employing the active DC power flow controller (DC-PFC)s. Hence, this paper examines the static average model (AM) and power injection model (PIM) of an interline DC-PFC (IDC-PFC). It is to provide a suitable base for DC PF studies and easy embedding of the DC-PFCs into MT-HVDC grids’ PF equations. In this regard, this paper proposes a new DC PF solver (DC-PFS) for the IDC-PFC compensated MT-HVDC grids within the well-accepted Newton-Raphson (NR) framework. It requires a few modifications in the main structure of the system's Jacobin (J) matrix compared to the uncompensated MT-HVDC grid. Also, the system's admittance matrix and its symmetry are preserved. In the proposed concept, the IDC-PFC cooperates with other MT-HVDC grid's state variables to satisfy the predetermined control objective(s). Furthermore, this paper proposes a new solution procedure (SP) to handle various system's limitations during the processes of solving the DC PF problem. Meanwhile, there is no need to modify the related J matrix. The effective and accurate performance of the IDC-PFC's models, as well as presented NR-based DC-PFS and SP, are verified by performing several simulations on the 8-bus CIGRE MT-HVDC grid. This paper addresses procedures for power cable time-dependent rating calculations. Such calculations are required to obtain cable emergency ratings and also to observe the conductor temperature variations with time when subjected to variable loading. The calculation procedure is described in the IEC Standards 60853-1 and 2. A real difficulty in applying those procedures lies in an ability to take into account variation of the electrical resistances of the cable metallic components with temperature. The standard gives an approximate equation, developed by Goldenberg. However, this equation is applicable to a single current step applied to the cable. The paper shows that it cannot be easily applied to multiple current steps and proposes a new approximate algorithm providing an analytical solution to this problem. This paper proposes a systematic and general approach to model correlated stochastic processes in power systems by means of stochastic differential-algebraic equations. The paper discusses the theoretical background of stochastic differential-algebraic equations and provides a variety of examples of correlated stochastic models for power system applications. With this aim, stochastic processes with Normal and Weibull distributions are considered. The case study utilizes the well-known two-area system to demonstrate that the presence of correlation between the stochastic processes can cause instability, despite the fact that the same system is stable if the same processes are uncorrelated. The case study also considers a 1479-bus dynamic model of the all-island Irish transmission system to show the scalability of the proposed technique, and to compare scenarios with different levels of correlation among stochastic processes. Results indicate that correlation has a non-negligible impact on short-term dynamics. A high level of correlation among the processes, in fact, can give raise to instability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the impact of discrete secondary controllers on the dynamic response of power systems. The idea of the paper originates from the observation that there is a range of values, from few tens of seconds to few minutes, of the execution cycles of conventional automatic generation control (AGC) that leads to a limit cycle. Below and above this range the system is stable. This is certainly not a problem in practice as the AGC updates the power set points of generating units every few seconds. However, this phenomenon has interesting consequences if one considers real-time electricity markets with short dispatch periods (i.e., 5 minutes) as these markets can be modeled as a sort of AGC. The paper first provides a formal analogy between conventional AGC and real-time electricity markets. Then it shows that the discretization-driven instability exists if the system includes a real-time electricity market modeled as secondary frequency controller. Low-inertia microgrids are prone to large frequency fluctuations due to high penetration of inverter-fed renewable sources. A virtual synchronous machine (VSM) is capable of handling these frequency fluctuations. VSM imparts inertial behaviour in grid-connected inverters with the help of an electric storage device. Most of the reported VSM control schemes use a constant inertia parameter that leads to an inadequate dynamic frequency response. In this paper, a fuzzy controller-based self-adaptive VSM control scheme is proposed. Here, the value of the inertia parameter is decided using fuzzy rules which take the penetration index of renewable energy, frequency deviation and rate-of-change-of-frequency as the input parameters. These rules are formulated with the help of the sample data obtained from simulations done in MATLAB/Simulink, where the inertial parameter is optimized using a genetic algorithm for various cases. The proposed method is validated for solar photovoltaic-fed microgrid test systems using power–hardware-in-the loop and the results indicate a reduction in maximum frequency deviation compared to the constant inertia parameter based VSM schemes. Deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) can predict motor behavior based on SPMSM model. However, during the operation of motor system, motor parameters (such as stator inductance and flux linkage) vary frequently according to different working conditions, which may lead to controller parameter mismatch, causing current harmonic content to increase and efficiency to decrease. In order to solve these problems caused by parameter variation, first, this paper proposes a current prediction error model by considering uncertainties of model parameters. Second, stator inductance and flux linkage are decoupled based on current prediction error model, which can reduce the interaction between parameters. Finally, the Kalman Filter (KF) algorithm is presented to filter the decoupled parameters. It is shown that the stator inductance and flux linkage can be identified accurately and the complexity of computation can be simplified. The traditional DPCC method, Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) based DPCC method and the proposed DPCC method are comparatively analyzed in this paper. Simulation and experiment indicate that the proposed parameter decoupling identification method can effectively reduce current harmonic content, current fluctuation and current tracking errors caused by parameter mismatch. In practical microgrids, the inhomogeneous initial values are widely appeared due to soft-starting operation. If traditional model order reduction approaches are applied, the input-output maps error between the original system and reduced-order system is large. To address this problem, this paper proposes a reduced-order aggregate model based on balanced truncation approach to provide the preprocessing approach for the real-time simulation of large-scale converters with inhomogeneous initial conditions in DC microgrid. Firstly, the standard linear time-invariant model with inhomogeneous initial conditions is established through non-leader multiagents concept. To end this, it is convenient for scholars to build complex system modeling with switched topology. Furthermore, the full system is divided into two components, i.e., the unforced component with nontrivial initial conditions and forced component with null initial conditions. Moreover, this paper presents an aggregated approach that involves independent reducing component responses and combining reducing component responses. Based on this, the input-output maps error is reduced. Then, the approximated error estimate of the reduced-order aggregate model regarding large-scale converters in DC microgrid is first provided, which provides prior knowledge and theoretical basis for DC microgrid designers.
