Imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is inevitable in modern wireless communication networks, and results in severe multi-user interference in multi-antenna Broadcast Channel (BC). While the capacity of multi-antenna (Gaussian) BC with perfect CSIT is known and achieved by Dirty Paper Coding (DPC), the capacity and the capacity-achieving strategy of multi-antenna BC with imperfect CSIT remain unknown. Conventional approaches therefore rely on applying communication strategies designed for perfect CSIT to the imperfect CSIT setting. In this work, we break this conventional routine and make two major contributions. First, we show that linearly precoded Rate-Splitting (RS), relying on the split of messages into common and private parts and linear precoding at the transmitter, and successive interference cancellation at the receivers, can achieve larger rate region than DPC in multi-antenna BC with partial CSIT. Second, we propose a novel scheme, denoted as Dirty Paper Coded Rate-Splitting (DPCRS), that relies on RS to split the user messages into common and private parts, and DPC to encode the private parts. We show that the rate region of DPCRS in Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) BC with partial CSIT is enlarged beyond that of conventional DPC and that of linearly precoded RS. Gaining benefits from the capability of RS to partially decode the interference and partially treat interference as noise, DPCRS is less sensitive to CSIT inaccuracies, networks loads and user deployments compared with DPC and other existing transmission strategies. This paper studies the secure transmission in a multiuser broadcast channel where only the statistical channel state information of the eavesdropper is available. We propose to apply secret dirty-paper coding (S-DPC) in this scenario to support the secure transmission of one user and the normal (unclassified) transmission of the other users. By adopting the S-DPC and encoding the secret message in the first place, all the information-bearing signals of the normal transmission are treated as noise by potential eavesdroppers and thus provide secrecy for the secure transmission. In this way, the proposed approach exploits the intrinsic secrecy of multiuser broadcasting and can serve as an energy-efficient alternative to the traditional artificial noise (AN) scheme. To evaluate the secrecy performance of this approach and compare it with the AN scheme, we propose two S-DPC-based secure transmission schemes for maximizing the secrecy rate under constraints on the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the normal transmission rates. The first scheme directly optimizes the covariance matrices of the transmit signals, and a novel approximation of the intractable SOP constraint is derived to facilitate the optimization. The second scheme combines zero-forcing dirty-paper coding and AN, and the optimization involves only power allocation. We establish efficient numerical algorithms to solve the optimization problems for both schemes. Theoretical and simulation results confirm that, in addition to supporting the normal transmission, the achievable secrecy rates of the proposed schemes can be close to that of the traditional AN scheme, which supports only the secure transmission of one user. For multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system, transmitter utilizes a pre-equalizer based precoding to cancel inter-stream interference for parallel transmission with the aid of accurate feedback of channel state information (CSI) from all receivers. The correct power scaling factor, which normalizes the symbols power of precoding to be a constant one, is required at each receiver. Due to CSI error and limitation of feed-forward link, the received inaccurate power scaling factor will shrink or expand the received constellation points which severely degrades the performance of MIMO system. In this paper, using nonlinear vector perturbation (VP) and linear zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, we analyze the impact of inaccurate power scaling factor on the performance of a MIMO precoding system. The analyzed results show that the mismatched modulo size from inaccurate power scaling factor severely degrades the performance of the VP system, especially for high order M-QAM modulation. In addition, the performance degradation is strongly related with the distribution of representation points for each M-QAM symbol. For linear ZF precoding, the performance loss from the shrinked or expanded constellation points is severe for system using high order M-QAM. In addition, to alleviate the performance degradation, we propose a VP system using partial perturbation points (PPP). By limiting the region of redundant points with vector perturbation for partial M-QAM symbols, the performance degradation due to the inaccurate power scaling factor can be alleviated. Consider several source nodes communicating across a wireless network to a destination node with the help of several layers of relay nodes. Recent work by Avestimehr has approximated the capacity of this network up to an additive gap. The communication scheme achieving this capacity approximation is based on compress-and-forward, resulting in noise accumulation as the messages traverse the network. As a consequence, the approximation gap increases linearly with the network depth. This paper develops a computation alignment strategy that can approach the capacity of a class of layered, time-varying wireless relay networks up to an approximation gap that is independent of the network depth. This strategy is based on the compute-and-forward framework, which enables relays to decode deterministic functions of the transmitted messages. Alone, compute-and-forward is insufficient to approach the capacity as it incurs a penalty for approximating the wireless channel with complex-valued coefficients by a channel with integer coefficients. Here, this penalty is circumvented by carefully matching channel realizations across time slots to create integer-valued effective channels that are well suited to compute-and-forward. In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which consists of many low-cost reflecting elements, can enhance the reception of the desired signal and suppress the interference. Considering the above advantages, this paper investigates the RIS-assisted wireless communication in the presence of an interferer, where a receiver receives the desired signal and interference from a transmitter and an interferer, respectively, and the RIS is deployed to assist this system. First, an interference-limited channel capacity maximization problem is formulated, and a numerical algorithm based on the fraction programming and optimality conditions is proposed to obtain the optimal solution. Then, this paper shows the upper boundary of the maximal capacity with interference and discusses what kind of channel conditions can achieve the upper boundary and the corresponding optimal phase shifts. Next, this paper analyzes the asymptotic behaviors of the maximal capacity in the scenarios that some or all of the number of reflecting elements, antennas at the transmitter, and interferer go to infinity. This paper studies a multiple-input–single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) featuring simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, where a multiantenna access point (AP) delivers both information and energy via radio signals to multiple single-antenna receivers simultaneously, and each receiver implements either information decoding (ID) or energy harvesting (EH). In particular, pseudorandom sequences that are a priori known and therefore can be cancelled at each ID receiver are used as the energy signals, and the information-theoretically optimal dirty paper coding is employed for the information transmission. We characterize the capacity region for ID receivers by solving a sequence of weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization (WSRMax) problems subject to a maximum sum-power constraint for the AP, and a set of minimum harvested power constraints for individual EH receivers. The problem corresponds to a new form of WSRMax problem in MISO-BC with combined maximum and minimum linear transmit covariance constraints (MaxLTCCs and MinLTCCs), which differs from the celebrated capacity region characterization problem for MISO-BC under a set of MaxLTCCs only and is challenging to solve. By extending the general BC–multiple-access-channel duality, which is only applicable to WSRMax problems with MaxLTCCs, and applying the ellipsoid method, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to solve this problem globally optimally. Furthermore, we also propose two suboptimal algorithms with lower complexity by assuming that the information and energy signals are designed separately. The prospects of using a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) to aid wireless communication systems have recently received much attention from academia and industry. Most papers make theoretical studies based on elementary models, while the prototyping of RIS-aided wireless communication and real-world field trials are scarce. In this paper, we describe a new RIS prototype consisting of 1100 controllable elements working at 5.8 GHz band. We propose an efficient algorithm for configuring the RIS over the air by exploiting the geometrical array properties and a practical receiver-RIS feedback link. In our indoor test, where the transmitter and receiver are separated by a 30 cm thick concrete wall, our RIS prototype provides a 26 dB power gain compared to the baseline case where the RIS is replaced by a copper plate. A 27 dB power gain was observed in the short-distance outdoor measurement. We also carried out long-distance measurements and successfully transmitted a 32 Mbps data stream over 500 m. A 1080p video was live-streamed and it only played smoothly when the RIS was utilized. The power consumption of the RIS is around 1 W. This paper derives the asymptotic distribution of the normalized $k$ -th maximum order statistics of a sequence of non-central chi-square random variables with non-identical non-centrality parameters. We demonstrate the utility of these results in characterizing the signal-to-noise ratio in three different applications in wireless communication systems where the statistics of the $k$ -th maximum channel power over Rician fading links are of interest. Furthermore, we derive simple expressions for the asymptotic outage probability, average throughput, achievable throughput, and average bit error probability. This paper studies a memoryless state-dependent multiple access channel (MAC) where two transmitters wish to convey a message to a receiver under the assumption of causal and imperfect channel state information at transmitters (CSIT) and imperfect channel state information at receiver (CSIR). In order to emphasize the limitation of transmitter cooperation between physically distributed nodes, we focus on the so-called distributed CSIT assumption, i.e., where each transmitter has its individual channel knowledge, while the message can be assumed to be partially or entirely shared a priori between transmitters by exploiting some on-board memory. Under this setup, the first part of the paper characterizes the common message capacity of the channel at hand for arbitrary CSIT and CSIR structure. The optimal scheme builds on Shannon strategies, i.e., optimal codes are constructed by letting the channel inputs be a function of current CSIT only. For a special case when CSIT is a deterministic function of CSIR, the considered scheme also achieves the capacity region of a common message and two private messages. The second part addresses an important instance of the previous general result in a context of a cooperative multi-antenna Gaussian channel under i.i.d. fading operating in frequency-division duplex mode, such that CSIT is acquired via an explicit feedback of perfect CSIR. The capacity of the channel at hand is achieved by distributed linear precoding applied to Gaussian codes. Surprisingly, we demonstrate that it is suboptimal to send a number of data streams bounded by the number of transmit antennas as typically considered in a centralized CSIT setup. In this paper, we propose a reference-modulated permutation index differential chaos shift keying (RM-PI-DCSK) over multipath fading channels. Due to quasi-orthogonal property between different permutated chaotic signals, the proposed scheme can remarkably suppress the inter-sequence interference to recover the desired information. Moreover, the proposed RM-PI-DCSK has one more modulation bit in the reference segment than the conventional permutation index differential chaos shift keying (PI-DCSK). Both the reference signal in the first time-slot and a permuted replica of the reference in the second time-slot are modulated for efficient transmission. The theoretical bit-error-rate (BER) performance and the highly consistent simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RM-PI-DCSK can achieve a performance gain 3 dB over the conventional PI-DCSK at a BER of $10^{-4}$ , and this gain becomes larger in a high-delay-spread channel. In particular, the performance superiority of the RM-PI-DCSK is further demonstrated in a typical ultra-wideband (UWB) channel with narrow-band interference. Therefore, this proposed scheme can be deemed as an efficient transmission alternative for chaotic-based wireless communications, such as in wireless local area network (WLAN) applications and indoor applications of the transmitted-reference UWB. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-enhanced wireless communication is one of the critical technologies of the sixth generation mobile communication, which has recently emerged as an innovative solution to the realization of intelligent transportation. It can meet the increasing demand for high-speed railway (HSR) communications services. In this paper, we consider a train-ground TDD wireless mobile communication paradigm to deploy two IRSs on the roadside and the train roof to assist the wireless transmission for the HSR communication system. To achieve the more significant performance gain, in the uplink transmission phase, we propose the practical channel estimation framework of the MIMO system aided by double IRSs to acquire reliable channel state information (CSI) of each channel. To facilitate the processing of the three-dimension tensor, we leverage the trilinearity of the parallel factor decomposition to decompose the received signal into a two-dimensional matrix. The Doppler frequency offset compensating scheme and channel tracking scheme based on Kalman-Filter are proposed to further decrease the pilot overheads. Then, in the downlink phase, a block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed to handle the data rate maximization problem of double IRSs communication system with the estimated CSI. We reformulate the original problem and decouple the double IRSs phase optimization problem into two single IRS phase optimization non-convex problems under the unit-modulus constraint. The Majorization-Minimization (MM) algorithm is proposed to approximate the optimal solution of the two optimization subproblems. Computation over multiple access channels (CoMAC) has been proposed to solve the problem of spectrum scarcity in wireless networks, which combines communication and computation efficiently using the superposition property of wireless channels. In this paper, we consider a multi-cluster CoMAC network, whose performance is affected by the inter-cluster interference and the non-uniform fading. To minimize the sum mean squared error of signals aggregated at different fusion centers (FCs), we propose a transceiver design for multi-cluster CoMAC. Specifically, we adopt a uniform-forcing transmitter design to formulate the receiver design as a quadratic sum-of-ratios problem with nonconvex quadratic constraints. Then, we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm to find its optimal solution with a given error tolerance. To solve the problem in a decentralized way, we develop a distributed algorithm based on the primal decomposition theory. Each subproblem is solved by using the successive convex approximation method. Further combining Lagrange duality, we derive the optimal solution structure of each subproblem, based on which we can find the solution with lower complexity. The incorporation of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) into wireless communication systems can extend the coverage and enhance the data transmission rate. This paper studies the joint transceiver and IRS designs in IRS-assisted multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems under both perfect channel state information (CSI) and imperfect CSI. Specifically, the transmit precoder, reflection coefficients at the IRS, and receive equalizer are jointly optimized to minimize the data detection mean square error (MSE), subject to the transmission power constraint and the modulus constraints for IRS reflection coefficients. The design problems, non-convex and challenging, are tackled under the framework of alternating optimization. For the design with perfect CSI, we successively optimize the IRS reflection coefficients given the precoder and present the closed-form optimal angle of one reflection coefficient given the others. For the robust design with imperfect CSI, we first average the detection MSE over channel uncertainties by using a generalized statistical CSI error model. Then, the averaged MSE is approximated by a more tractable upper bound. Subsequently, the robust design problem is elaborately transformed into a form similar to the problem with perfect CSI. The joint transmission scheme of polar codes and sparse code multiple access (SCMA) has been regarded as a promising technology for future wireless communication systems. However, most of the existing polar-coded SCMA (PC-SCMA) systems suffer from high latency caused by the feedback iteration and list decoding. In addition, the error performance of PC-SCMA systems is unsatisfactory for ultra-reliable transmission. Inspired by the compelling benefits of non-binary polar codes, in this paper, we design a non-binary polar-coded SCMA (NB-PC-SCMA) system with a free order matching strategy to address the issues of delay and reliability. Specifically, we first formulate a joint factor graph for NB-PC-SCMA and propose a non-binary successive cancellation list (NB-SCL) and damping based joint iterative detection and decoding (NSD-JIDD) multiuser receiver to improve the BER and latency performance. Then, a lazy-search based NB-SCL (L-NB-SCL) decoding is proposed to reduce the computational complexity by simplifying the path search pattern of the list decoder. After that, we modify the update of user nodes for SCMA detection to improve the convergence error and finally propose the improved NSD-JIDD (ISD-JIDD) algorithm, which can avoid redundant operations by exploiting L-NB-SCL decoding. Simulation results show that the proposed NB-PC-SCMA system achieves better bit error rate (BER) performance and considerable latency gain when compared to its counterparts. From adapting to the propagation environment to reconstructing the propagation environment, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) changes the design paradigm of wireless communications. To reconstruct the propagation environment, joint beamforming of RIS and multi-input multi-output (MIMO) is crucial. Unfortunately, due to the coupling effect of the active beamforming of MIMO and passive beamforming of RIS, it is difficult to find the optimal solution to the joint beamforming problem, so a serious performance loss will be caused. In this paper, inspired by the end-to-end (E2E) learning of communication system, we propose the E2E learning based RIS-aided communication system to mitigate the performance loss via deep learning techniques. The key idea is to simultaneously optimize the signal processing functions at base station (BS), RIS, and user, including active beamforming for BS and user, passive beamforming for RIS. This way is able to avoid the performance loss caused by alternately optimizing each function of the RIS-aided system. Specifically, we firstly utilize a deep neural network (DNN) to realize the modulation and beamforming for BS and utilize another DNN to realize the demodulation and combining for user. Then, the RIS passive beamforming is also represented by trainable parameters, which could be simultaneously optimized with the DNNs at BS and user. Simulation results show that the proposed E2E learning based RIS-aided communication system could achieve the better bit error rate (BER) performance than traditional RIS-aided communication systems. Ambient backscatter (AB) communication enables the backscatter devices to modulate and transmit data by reflecting surrounding digital video broadcasting (DVB) signals, and has emerged as a promising solution to connect low-power and small-sized devices in Internet of Things (IoT). Unfortunately, the AB receiver may suffer from the strong direct-link interference (DLI) transmitted from the ambient DVB station, making it difficult to decode the backscattered signal (BS) directly. In this paper, to tackle this issue, we propose a DLI cancellation method for AB communications over ambient DVB signals. First, a general signal processing operation for DLI cancellation at the AB receiver is designed, where neither special design on waveform nor cooperation between the ambient DVB station and the backscatter transceiver is required. Then, by minimizing the residual reception power after DLI cancellation, a three-layer parameter searching algorithm is proposed to separate the BS from the ambient DVB signal, which is of low implementation complexity. Simulation results show that when the DLI-to-BS ratio (ISR) is greater than 30 dB, the proposed DLI cancellation method can effectively suppress the DLI at the AB receiver, and the demodulation and capacity performance of the ambient DVB transmission and the backscatter transmission are barely deteriorated, as compared with the scenarios of original DVB transmission without BS and pure backscatter transmission without DLI. Cybertwin is a promising networking paradigm that supports complex wireless interconnectivity and enhances reliable communications by using edge capability in different applications. However, the computation-heavy phased-array weight vector generation is the significant barrier for the implementation of physical layer security (PLS) for millimeter-wave (MMWV) communications in cybertwin-driven scenarios, like vehicle-to-everything (V2X) applications. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity phased-array PLS scheme in MMWV wireless communications for cybertwin-driven V2X applications. The computational complexity is much reduced in a cost-effective way, where the transmitting phased-array weight vectors are updated at the symbol rate by randomly swapping the pre-calculated initial weight vector elements instead of directly calculating a new weight vector. Performance evaluation shows the proposed scheme possesses a lower computational complexity than the compared PLS schemes. The simulation demonstrates that the constellations are scrambled at undesired directions, while the constellation at target direction remains clear and constant. Thus, the communication secrecy is preserved for the receiver at the target direction in cybertwin-driven vehicular communications. In this paper, we investigate device-to-device (D2D) communication networks which are one of the key technologies for next-generation mobile communication networks and many other applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), and Internet of things (IoT). The overlay D2D communication networks that are considered in our study use dedicated radio resources separate from what cellular networks use and there exists co-channel interference in D2D networks without cross-channel interference between two networks. We propose a new transmission scheme for overlay D2D networks that uses a dueling deep reinforcement learning (DRL) architecture. The DRL is especially effective in environments where actions do not affect subsequent states as in wireless communication networks. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed architecture is designed to utilize only information that each D2D devices can easily obtain by measuring channels. The proposed scheme thus enables D2D devices to train their own neural networks and to decide autonomously whether to transmit data without any intervention from infrastructures. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in terms of average sum-rates and is compared to three baseline schemes. Caching is a promising technique for 5G networks to reduce the backhual traffic and increase the overall network efficiency. In this paper, we study the caching placement policy with consideration of cooperative transmission for a two-hop relay-enabled device-to-device (D2D) network. In the caching placement phase, the probabilistic caching placement policy is considered, and in the content transmission phase, the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) scheme with soft information combining [i.e., energy accumulation (EA) and mutual-information accumulation (MIA)] is utilized to improve the content retrieval experience. Cache-aided successful transmission probability (CSTP) is adopted as the main performance metric in this paper. By using tools from stochastic geometry, analytical expressions for the CSTP under different transmission schemes are derived. In moderate or high SIR regime, the optimal caching placement policy is identified based on the analytical expression and the CSTP performance is maximized accordingly. Evaluation results suggest that the MIA-based caching strategy performs better as opposed to existing strategies in most cases, but this outperformance vanishes when the transmission environment becomes severe or when users’ requests become concentrated. High-speed digital signals may generate significant radiated emission and affect nearby wireless communication devices. The undesirable electromagnetic interference (EMI) of USB 3.0 to the 2.4-GHz ISM band is a well-known example. Common solutions such as shielding or layout improvement usually focus on controlling the coupling path, while few works considered the possibility of using data encoding. Based on our previous work, this paper presents a new coding method to reduce EMI at the source, with a key feature of being compatible with the conventional 8b/10b line code. In particular, the control symbols in 8b/10b are used to achieve spectrum suppression at specific target frequencies. By properly inserting preselected control symbols constantly to the output stream, a single band 7–15 dB, or dual band near 10 dB, spectrum reduction can be achieved, hence opening a window in spectrum suitable for wireless communication. The proposed coding demands a new encoder at the transmitter side, but only a slightly modified 8b/10b decoder is required at the receiver side. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned to be a disruptive wireless communication technique that is capable of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment. In this paper, we study a free-space RIS-assisted multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system in far-field operation. To maximize the received power from the physical and electromagnetic nature point of view, a comprehensive optimization, including beamforming of the transmitter, phase shifts of the RIS, orientation and position of the RIS is formulated and addressed. After exploiting the property of line-of-sight (LoS) links, we derive closed-form solutions of beamforming and phase shifts. For the non-trivial RIS position optimization problem in arbitrary three-dimensional space, a dimensional-reducing theory is proved. The simulation results show that the proposed closed-form beamforming and phase shifts approach the upper bound of the received power. The robustness of our proposed solutions in terms of the perturbation is also verified. Moreover, the RIS significantly enhances the performance of the mmWave/THz communication system. This paper investigates covert communications with finite blocklength in the presence of multiple randomly distributed wardens, which are modeled as a Poisson point process (PPP). Specifically, the protection area, which is guarded by the transmitter against the wardens, is introduced in order to enhance the covert communication performance. First, the closed-form expressions of covert communication constraint are derived under both the non-colluding and colluding detection strategies over the channels suffering both path-loss and small scaling fading. Then, considering the constraint of maximum available blocklength, the transmit power and the blocklength are jointly optimized to maximize the average effective covert throughput (AECT). Differing from the existing literature with only one warden, it is demonstrated that the increasing of maximum available blocklength causes the improvement of maximum AECT only when the density of warden is small. In addition, our examinations show that the expansion of the protection area indeed improves the maximum AECT, and the improvement under the non-colluding detection strategy is more significant than that under the colluding detection strategy. This paper investigates a novel intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-based symbiotic radio (SR) system architecture consisting of a transmitter, an IRS, and an information receiver (IR). The primary transmitter communicates with the IR and at the same time assists the IRS in forwarding information to the IR. Based on the IRS’s symbol period, we distinguish two scenarios, namely, commensal SR (CSR) and parasitic SR (PSR), where two different techniques for decoding the IRS signals at the IR are employed. We formulate bit error rate (BER) minimization problems for both scenarios by jointly optimizing the active beamformer at the base station and the phase shifts at the IRS, subject to a minimum primary rate requirement. Specifically, for the CSR scenario, a penalty-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a high-quality solution, where semi-closed-form solutions for the active beamformer and the IRS phase shifts are derived based on Lagrange duality and Majorization-Minimization methods, respectively. For the PSR scenario, we apply a bisection search-based method, successive convex approximation, and difference of convex programming to develop a computationally efficient algorithm, which converges to a locally optimal solution. TeraHertz (THz) wireless communication constitutes a promising technique of satisfying the ever-increasing appetite for high-rate services. However, the ultra-wide bandwidth of THz communications requires high-speed, high-resolution analog-to-digital converters, which are hard to implement due to their high complexity and power consumption. In this paper, a deep learning-assisted THz receiver is designed, which relies on single-bit quantization. Specifically, the imperfections of THz devices, including their in-phase/quadrature-phase imbalance, phase noise and nonlinearity are investigated. The deflection ratio of the maximum-likelihood detector used by our single-bit-quantization THz receiver is derived, which reveals the effect of phase offset on the demodulation performance, guiding the architecture design of our proposed receiver. To combat the performance loss caused by the above-mentioned distortions, a twin-phase training strategy and a neural network based demodulator are proposed, where the phase offset of the received signal is compensated before sampling. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed deep learning-assisted receiver is capable of achieving a satisfactory bit error rate performance, despite the grave distortions encountered. IEEE 802.11p standard defines wireless technology protocols that enable vehicular transportation and manage traffic efficiency. A major challenge in the development of this technology is ensuring communication reliability in highly dynamic vehicular environments, where the wireless communication channels are doubly selective, thus making channel estimation and tracking a relevant problem to investigate. In this paper, a novel deep learning (DL)-based weighted interpolation estimator is proposed to accurately estimate vehicular channels especially in high mobility scenarios. The proposed estimator is based on modifying the pilot allocation of the IEEE 802.11p standard so that more transmission data rates are achieved. Extensive numerical experiments demonstrate that the developed estimator significantly outperforms the recently proposed DL-based frame-by-frame estimators in different vehicular scenarios, while substantially reducing the overall computational complexity. Integrating the wireless power transfer (WPT) technology into the wireless communication system has been important for operational cost saving and power-hungry problem solving of electronic devices. In this paper, we propose a resonant beam simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (RB-SWIPT) system, which utilizes a gain medium and two retro-reflecting surfaces to enhance and retro-reflect energy, and allows devices to recharge their batteries and exchange information from the resonant beam wirelessly. To reveal the SWIPT mechanism and evaluate the SWIPT performance, we establish an analytical end-to-end (E $\mathscr{2}$ E) transmission model based on a modular approach and the electromagnetic field propagation. Then, the intra-cavity power intensity distribution, transmission loss, output power, and E $\mathscr{2}$ E efficiency can be obtained. The numerical evaluation illustrates that the exemplary RB-SWIPT system can provide about 4.20 W electric power and 12.41 bps/Hz spectral efficiency, and shorter transmission distance or larger retro-reflecting surface size can lead to higher E $\mathscr{2}$ E efficiency. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been recently emerged as an effective way for improving the performance of wireless networks by reconfiguring the propagation environment through a large number of passive reflecting elements. This game-changing technology is especially important for stepping into the Internet of Everything (IoE) era, where high performance is demanded with very limited available resources. In this paper, we study a backscatter-assisted wireless powered communication network (BS-WPCN), in which a number of energy-constrained users, powered by a power station (PS), transmit information to an access point (AP) via backscatter and active wireless information transfer, with their communication being aided by an IRS. Using a practical energy harvesting (EH) model which is able to capture the characteristics of realistic energy harvesters, we investigate the maximization of total network throughput. Specifically, IRS reflection coefficients, PS transmit and AP receive beamforming vectors, power and time allocation are designed through a two-stage algorithm, assuming minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver at the AP. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is confirmed via extensive numerical simulations. Thanks to its low transceiver complexity, mode division multiplexing (MDM) using orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been recently investigated as a new physical layer wireless transmission technique. This is due to the fact that different OAM modes are spatially orthogonal to each other, thus, perfectly suitable for spatial multiplexing and/or diversity. The orthogonality amongst different OAM modes is achieved in the absence of any mode offset between the transceivers’ phase-shifting feeding networks. However, the inherent presence of OAM mode offset destroys the orthogonality between different modes, which gives rise to inter-mode interference (IMI). Therefore, in this paper, in order to theoretically analyze the negative impact of OAM mode offset of MDM-OAM systems on the spectral efficiency of line-of-sight free-space wireless communication systems, an explicit signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio expression for each OAM mode is derived, through which the spectral efficiency degradation is evaluated. Furthermore, in order to support our theoretical analysis, a $9\times 9$ MDM-OAM practical communication experiment for different OAM mode settings is carried out at a microwave frequency of 5.8 GHz. In addition, by leveraging the fact that all circulant matrices always have the same eigendirections, regardless of the entries of the matrix, a low-complexity optimal OAM mode selection scheme is proposed which significantly improves the spectral efficiency of the system. Owing to the flexible mobility and convenient deployment, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided networks can facilitate many applications. However, the open accessibility of wireless communication brings a great risk of privacy to UAV-based networks. Thus, in this paper, we propose a UAV-aided covert communication scheme assisted by a multi-antenna jammer to maximize the transmission rate between a ground transmitter and a UAV receiver against several randomly distributed wardens. The transmitter adopts the maximum ratio transmission, while the jammer zero-forces its transmitted signal at the UAV to disturb the monitoring at wardens without interfering the legitimate transmission. First, we analyze the detection performance and derive the optimal threshold for each warden to minimize its detection outage probability (DOP). Then, with the worst situation in which all wardens set their respective optimal thresholds to achieve the minimum global DOP, the location and the transmit power of the jammer are optimized to maximize the DOP. The location of UAV and the transmit power of the ground transmitter are also optimized to maximize the transmission rate with the minimum DOP requirement satisfied. Symbiotic radio (SR) is a promising technology for energy- and spectrum-efficient wireless communication, which exploits passive communication for Internet-of-Things (IoT) transmission and achieves a mutualistic spectrum sharing between the passive and active transmissions. In this paper, we study an reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) empowered symbiotic radio over a broadcasting system, i.e., a base station (BS) broadcasts signals to multiple primary receivers (PRs) under the assistance of an RIS, while the RIS also transmits information to an IoT receiver (IR) by riding over the broadcasting signals. We formulate a problem to minimize the BS’s transmit power by jointly optimizing the BS’s active precoding and the RIS’s passive beamforming, under the signal-to-noise-ratio constraints of the primary and IoT transmissions. However, the problem is challenging to be solved optimally, since the variables are coupled and the constraints are non-convex. An iterative algorithm based on block coordinated descent (BCD) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques is first proposed, and its convergence together with complexity are analyzed. Then, to tackle the problem of high computational complexity caused by SDR technique, we further propose an alternative algorithm based on generalized power method (GPM) technique. Simulation results validate that the proposed system outperforms the traditional broadcasting system without RIS. It has been a challenging task to derive the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of aggregate interference as closed-form in Poisson point process (PPP). In this paper, we consider wireless communication networks where transmitters are all distributed according to homogeneous PPP and study the CCDF of the interference. Mainly, we derive generalized bounds on the CCDF of aggregate interference from whole homogeneous PPP based on discretization of interference, which considerably enhance tightness compared to the previous bounds. These bounds can be used to the analysis requiring the distribution for aggregate interference, such as deployment and activation of BSs, massive MIMO, and millimeter wave communication networks. As examples of utilizing the derived bounds, we derive tractable coverage probabilities of uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) users and downlink users in cellular networks under line-of-sight(LoS)/non-line-of-signt (NLOS) channels, respectively. In NOMA, we derive the closed-form bounds on coverage probability when successive interference cancellation is adopted for NOMA signal demodulation. Using the proposed bounds, we also obtain the bounds on coverage probability of a cellular system with LoS/NLOS channels. The tightness of bounds in this work is shown via numerical comparison. This paper aims to investigate the benefit of using intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems, in the presence of eavesdroppers. We maximize the weighted sum secrecy rate by jointly designing the secure beamforming (BF), the artificial noise (AN), as well as the phase shift of the IRS. An alternating optimization (AO) method is proposed to deal with the formulated non convex problem. In particular, the secure beamforming and AN jamming matrix are optimally designed via the successive convex approximation (SCA) approach for given phase shift, which can be derived by considering the alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM) and element-wise block coordinate decent (EBCD) methods. In this paper, a mixture Gamma shadowed (MGS) model is proposed as a unified composite distribution via representing the shadowing impact by an inverse Nakagami- $m$. The exact expression and the asymptotic behaviour at high average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime of the fundamental statistics of a MGS distribution are derived first. These statistics are then applied to analyze the performance of the wireless communication systems over double shadowed $\kappa$ - $\mu$ fading channels. In particular, the outage probability (OP), average bit error probability (ABEP), average channel capacity (ACC), effective capacity (EC) and average area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) of energy detection (ED) are provided. The universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) modulation is among the most considered solutions for the realization of beyond orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) air interfaces for future wireless networks. This paper focuses on the design and analysis of a UFMC transceiver equipped with multiple antennas and operating at millimeter-wave carrier frequencies. This paper provides the full mathematical model of an MIMO-UFMC transceiver, taking into account the presence of hybrid analog/digital beamformers at both ends of the communication links. Then, several detection structures are proposed, both for the case of single-packet isolated transmission and for the case of multiple-packet continuous transmission. In the latter situation, this paper also considers the case in which no guard time among adjacent packets is inserted, trading off an increased level of interference with higher values of spectral efficiency. At the analysis stage, several considered detection structures and transmission schemes are compared in terms of bit-error rate, root-mean-square error, and system throughput. The numerical results show that the proposed transceiver algorithms are effective and that the linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) data detector is capable of well managing the increased interference brought by the removal of guard times among consecutive packets, thus yielding throughput gains of about 10%–13%. The effect of phase noise at the receiver is also numerically assessed, and it is shown that the recursive implementation of the linear MMSE exhibits some degree of robustness against this disturbance. In this paper, we consider a coordinated beamforming design for a multiple-input single-output bursty interference channel. In practical scenarios, the distributed medium access control mechanisms or the decentralized networking protocols across different users contribute to the bursty nature of network traffic. The potential gains provided by such burstiness can be exploited by feeding back the interference state information to the transmitters. Errors may occur during such feedback, thus causing uncertainties in the user traffic and resulting in complicated beamforming design problems. In this paper, we model such traffic uncertainties by using a hidden Markov model (HMM). Assuming that perfect channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitters, our goal is to maximize the average system utility subjected to average power constraints under traffic uncertainties. We also extend the optimization problem to the imperfect CSI case. However, the resulting problem is highly nonconvex. Hence, we apply a series of convex approximation techniques. We further improve the approximation accuracy by using our proposed successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithms (HMM-SCA). In our simulation results, we observe that our proposed HMM-SCA provides a $46.3\%$ improvement in weighted sum rate over the SCA algorithm, in which the interference is assumed to be always present (NB-SCA). For the average weighted geometric mean rate, we observe that our proposed HMM-SCA also provides a $41.3\%$ improvement over the NB-SCA when user fairness is considered. In this paper, we consider a channel model that is often used to describe mobile wireless scenarios: multiple-antenna additive white Gaussian noise channels subject to random (fading) gains with full channel state information at the receiver. The dynamics of the fading process are approximated by a piecewise-constant process (frequency non-selective isotropic block fading). This paper addresses the finite blocklength fundamental limits of this channel model. Specifically, we give a formula for the channel dispersion—a quantity governing the delay required to achieve capacity. The multiplicative nature of the fading disturbance leads to a number of interesting technical difficulties that required us to enhance traditional methods for finding the channel dispersion. Alas, one difficulty remains: the converse (impossibility) part of our result holds under an extra constraint on the growth of the peak-power with blocklength. Our results demonstrate, for example, that while the capacities of $n_{t}\times n_{r}$ and $n_{r} \times n_{t}$ antenna configurations coincide (under fixed received power), the coding delay can be sensitive to this switch. For example, at the received SNR of 20 dB, the $16\times 100$ system achieves capacity with codes of length (delay) which is only 60% of the length required for the $100\times 16$ system. Another interesting implication is that for the MISO channel, the dispersion-optimal coding schemes require employing orthogonal designs such as Alamouti’s scheme—a surprising observation considering the fact that Alamouti’s scheme was designed for reducing demodulation errors, not improving coding rate. Finding these dispersion-optimal coding schemes naturally gives a criteria for producing orthogonal design-like inputs in dimensions where orthogonal designs do not exist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses point-to-point communication over block-fading channels with independent fading blocks. When both channel state information at the transmitter and receiver (CSIR) are available, most achievable schemes use separable coding, i.e., coding independently and in parallel over different fading states. Unfortunately, separable coding has drawbacks, including large memory requirements at both communication ends. In this paper, a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed that achieves the ergodic capacity without separable coding, with lattice codebooks and decoding decision regions that are universal across channel realizations. We first demonstrate this result for fading distributions with discrete, finite support whose sequences are robustly typical. Results are then extended to continuous fading distributions, as well as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In addition, a variant of the proposed scheme is presented for the MIMO ergodic fading channel with CSIR only, where we prove the existence of a universal codebook that achieves rates within a constant gap to capacity for finite-support fading distributions. A method to locate the position of the target vehicle with the aid of infrared signal-direction discrimination for short-range vehicle-to-vehicle communications is proposed in this paper. With the use of two one-dimensional (1-D) signal-direction discriminators mounted on a vehicle with a lateral separation between them to measure the coming directions of the signal emitted from another target vehicle, the position of the target vehicle relative to this detecting vehicle can be located by triangulation. The aforementioned 1-D signal-direction discriminator is composed of two planar receiving modules forming a specific geometric structure, which leads to different responsivities of these individual receiving modules for a signal incident from a definite direction. The coming direction of the signal is determined by comparing the signal strengths received by these individual receiving modules. With a proposed hardware and software implementation, the position of the target vehicle can be accurately determined within a longitudinal range of 50 m. Owing to the restriction of the width of the vehicle, the separation of the signal-direction discriminators mounted on the vehicle cannot exceed 1.8 m. This leads to the consequence that in the remote region any small inaccuracy of the measured signal directions may cause very large position error. However, our measured results reveal a specific characteristic of the distribution of the measured positions for the target vehicle at a definite location. This allows us to design deliberate statistical algorithms to accurately extract the position of the target vehicle in the remote region. Using the simplest statistical algorithm, we are able to locate the position of the target vehicle with acceptable accuracy within a longitudinal range of 80 m. Due to the advancement and development in the field of automation and embedded system, the notion of smart car has become very popular. Smart cars are modernizing trends in the traditional automobile industry. Companies across the globe have been investing a huge amount of resources on the production and design of smart cars. Every technological development needs to overcome certain obstacles, and hence, in this paper, a design of a collision detection system for smart car using light fidelity (Li-Fi) and ultrasonic sensor on the Arduino platform is proposed. This design consists of an ultrasonic sensor, an Arduino processor, and a Li-Fi circuit. The ultrasonic is used for measurement of distance between vehicles, and Arduino processes the data and makes decisions accordingly. Data transmission between vehicles is ensued using a Li-Fi transmitter circuit and a Li-Fi receiver circuit. The transmitter circuit is mounted on the tail lights of the leading car and the receiver circuit is mounted on the front side of the car that follows. Using visible light communication, the transmitter circuit transmits the calculated speed and the information is received by the receiver circuit of the second car. On the basis of the information received, the speed of the second car is changed in order to avoid collision. With the great explosion of wireless systems and their applications and also with the limited enabling energy and spectrum resources available, it becomes more and more crucial to focus on the reduction of energy use in future wireless systems. The most efficient way of electromagnetic wave energy reception is to fully capture the two orthogonal components of its field vector in connection with polarization diversity. This paper shows how to exploit the concept of polarization diversity over the millimeter-wave (mmW) frequency band which has been assigned for wireless applications. This is done by developing the theory of operation and design procedure of dually-polarized mmW components. The novelty presented in this paper lies in developing a principle of operation so to come up with a class of dually-polarized mmW components, namely, 3-dB couplers, 0-dB couplers, and phase shifters. This allows the development of dually-polarized beamforming networks such as Butler matrix. This paper presents a simple, compact, and low-power method for generating extremely low-frequency radio signals below ~500 Hz. This paper is motivated by the prohibitively large size and low efficiency of conventional antennas operating in this frequency range. The successful generation of time-varying magnetic fields produced by the physical rotation of a 3 cm3 permanent magnet is demonstrated. Ground plane and receiver orientation effects are analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. Observations as a function of distance from the source indicate that the fields are dominated by the static component, rather than by the radiation component, of the generated field. Based on these observations, the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a spinning magnet source is predicted to be weak. Nevertheless, static magnetic signaling using this technique is proven to be both possible and practical at frequencies below ~500 Hz and at distances in excess of 100 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the design and analysis of minimum mean square error (MMSE) turbo decision feedback equalization (DFE), with expectation propagation (EP), for single carrier modulations. Classical non iterative DFE structures have substantial advantages at high-data rates, even compared with turbo linear equalizers-interference cancellers (LE-IC), hence making turbo DFE-IC schemes an attractive solution. In this paper, we derive an iterative DFE-IC, capitalizing on the use of soft feedback based on expectation propagation, along with the use of prior information for improved filtering and interference cancellation. This turbo iterative DFE-IC significantly outperforms turbo LE-IC, especially at high-spectral efficiency and also exhibits performance improvements over existing DFE-IC variants. The proposed scheme can also be self-iterated, as done in the recent trend on EP-based equalizers, and it is shown to be an attractive alternative to linear self-iterated receivers. For time-varying (TV) filter equalizers, an efficient matrix inversion scheme is also proposed, considerably reducing the computational complexity relative to existing methods. Using finite-length and asymptotic analysis on a severely selective channel, the proposed DFE-IC is shown to achieve higher rates than known alternatives, with better waterfall thresholds and faster convergence, while keeping a similar computational complexity. In this paper, spectrum sharing incentive for legitimate wireless information surveillance at the physical layer is investigated. The concept behind this is that authorized government agencies want to eavesdrop the communication between a suspicious source-destination pair, and stimulate the help of another source-destination pair (referred to as secondary users) looking for transmission opportunities. We thus propose to let the secondary receiver act as a monitor to eavesdrop the suspicious communication and let the secondary transmitter act as a friendly jammer to improve the eavesdropping performance, such that they are granted to share the spectrum of the suspicious users, as a reward. To guarantee the eavesdropping performance, the successful eavesdropping probability is required to be larger than that with passive eavesdropping. The problems of jointly optimizing the transmit power of the secondary transmitter and the successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding order at the secondary receiver to maximize the average secondary transmission rate and minimize the secondary transmission outage probability are investigated. Two scenarios are considered for the availability of the channel state information (CSI). The first scenario assumes perfect CSI, and the optimal strategies for the transmit power control and the SIC decoding ordering are derived. The second scenario assumes partial CSI, where the instantaneous CSI of the secondary transmission link and the statistical CSI of the links related to the suspicious communication are available, and the optimal strategies for maximizing an approximate average secondary transmission rate and minimizing an approximate secondary transmission outage probability are proposed. This paper investigates an average secrecy rate (ASR) maximization problem for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enabled wireless communication system, wherein a UAV is employed to deliver confidential information to a ground destination in the presence of a terrestrial passive eavesdropper. By employing an artificial noise (AN) injection based secure two-phase transmission protocol, we aim at jointly optimizing the UAV's trajectory, network transmission power, and AN power allocation over a given time horizon to enhance the ASR performance. Specifically, we divide the original non-convex problem into four subproblems, and propose a successive convex approximation based efficient iterative algorithm to solve it suboptimally with guaranteed convergence. To meet the ever increasing demand for better service quality and availability, the next generation digital TV (DTV) broadcast, a.k.a., the ATSC 3.0, is developed with new capabilities to deliver 4K ultra-high-definition (4K-UHD) services to fixed receivers, robust HD-quality services to mobile receivers, as well as non-broadcast services (e.g., broadband), including Internet of Things (IoT), Connected Vehicles, etc. To realize these capabilities, it becomes necessary to evolve the existing single-transmitter high-power-high-tower (HPHT) network to multi-transmitter low-power-low-tower single-frequency-networks (SFN), which requires installing new transmitters. Each new transmitter needs a feederlink to receive the service data from the broadcast gateway (BG) for transmission. This feederlink contributes to a significant portion of installation and operational costs of the new transmitters. This paper proposes a wireless in-band distribution link (WIDL) technology, where the distribution data is delivered to the newly deployed transmitters from the existing DTV towers wirelessly sharing the same TV band with the broadcast services. The distribution signal is multiplexed with service signal in the same ATSC 3.0 waveform. Layered division multiplexing (LDM) technology is proposed to achieve more efficient transmission of the distribution signal. The WIDL offers better performance and more robust operation than the on-channel repeater (OCR) technologies. More importantly, it offers the possibility of delivering backhaul data for future applications over the DTV infrastructure, such as IoT and connected vehicles. In this paper, we investigate the covert communications in an overlay cognitive radio (CR) network, where multiple secondary transmitters (STs) opportunistically send confidential information to a secondary receiver (SR). In contrast to current studies with ensuring security of information transmitted, we are motivated to protect communication behavior in CR network, which is considered as a higher-level security. To address covert rate and fairness performance, three joint user-jammer scheduling schemes are proposed, namely, rate-oriented secondary user scheduling (R-SUS), link-oriented secondary user scheduling (L-SUS), and fairness oriented secondary user scheduling (F-SUS). Numerical results show that the minimal detection error probability at eavesdropper (Eve) can be effectively impacted by creating channel uncertainty with the jamming signal. Further, it can be seen that under the same covert constraint, the R-SUS scheme achieves the best covert rate performance, full diversity can be obtained by the L-SUS scheme, while the F-SUS scheme exploits an advantage of better fairness. Millimeter wave (MmWave) communications is capable of supporting multi-gigabit wireless access thanks to its abundant spectrum resource. However, severe path loss and high directivity make it vulnerable to blockage events, which can be frequent in indoor and dense urban environments. To address this issue, in this paper, we introduce intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) as a new technology to provide effective reflected paths to enhance the coverage of mmWave signals. In this framework, we study joint active and passive precoding design for IRS-assisted mmWave systems, where multiple IRSs are deployed to assist the data transmission from a base station (BS) to a single-antenna receiver. Our objective is to maximize the received signal power by jointly optimizing the BS's transmit precoding vector and IRSs’ phase shift coefficients. Although such an optimization problem is generally non-convex, we show that, by exploiting some important characteristics of mmWave channels, an optimal closed-form solution can be derived for the single IRS case and a near-optimal analytical solution can be obtained for the multi-IRS case. Our analysis reveals that the received signal power increases quadratically with the number of reflecting elements for both the single IRS and multi-IRS cases. Simulation results are included to verify the optimality and near-optimality of our proposed solutions. Results also show that IRSs can help create effective virtual line-of-sight (LOS) paths and thus substantially improve robustness against blockages in mmWave communications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
