In this correspondence, we compare the achievable throughput for the optimal strategy of dirty paper coding (DPC) to that achieved with suboptimal and lower complexity linear precoding techniques (zero-forcing and block diagonalization). Both strategies utilize all available spatial dimensions and therefore have the same multiplexing gain, but an absolute difference in terms of throughput does exist. The sum rate difference between the two strategies is analytically computed at asymptotically high SNR. Furthermore, the difference is not affected by asymmetric channel behavior when each user has a different average SNR. Weighted sum rate maximization is also considered. In wireless networks, the link connectivity may be intermittent due to shadowing, burstiness of data arrival, or uncoordinated resource allocation. In this paper, we model the intermittence of links as Bernoulli distributed random channel states, termed intermittence channel states, and study the impact of the corresponding channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (BC). Moreover, due to the heterogeneous timeliness of intermittence channel states, the CSIT considered in this paper is hybrid. More specifically, the CSIT of each link can be perfectly (causally or non-causally) available, delayed, or not available. When the links are connected, we adopt a general setting that the received signal-to-noise ratios can be different. Our contribution is the characterization of the capacity regions of intermittent Gaussian BC to within bounded gaps for all combinations of hybrid CSIT, except for scenario DN (delayed CSIT of receiver 1, no CSIT of receiver 2). For scenario DN, we propose an opportunistic physical layer network coding scheme that achieves a strictly larger degree-of-freedom (DoF) region than the no-CSIT DoF region. As a corollary, single-user CSIT is able to increase the sum DoF for intermittent Gaussian BC (also the capacity region for the erasure BC, as a by-product). This result is in sharp contrast to the recent negative result by Davoodi and Jafar, where it is shown that for fast-fading multiple-input single-output BC with continuous channel states, single-user CSIT does not help at all in terms of sum DoF. The new Fifth generation (5G) of wireless communications and beyond 5G (B5G) networks are required to provide connectivity for massive number of devices at high speed and low latency. Within this context, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been involved and emerged in recent research since it is considered as an enabling technology for 5G and B5G networks. NOMA allows several users to share the same resources of time and frequency, making it an excellent candidate to provide impressively large connectivity with high spectral efficiency. In this paper, we study the performance of NOMA systems assuming independent but not necessarily to be identical $N$ -Nakagami-m multipath fading channels. This channel model subsumes the double Nakagami-m, which was investigated in the context of intervehicular communications and keyhole multiple input multiple output systems, as special cases. To this end, we derive exact analytical and asymptotic expressions for the probability density function of the overall signal to noise ratio, system capacity, and the pairwise error probability (PEP) for each user. The efficiency of link adaptation in wireless communications relies greatly on the accuracy of channel knowledge and transmission mode selection. In this paper, a novel deep learning based link adaptation framework is proposed for the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with compressed-sensing-assisted index modulation, termed as OFDM-CSIM, communicating over millimeter-wave (mmWave) channels. To achieve link adaptation, a novel multi-layer sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) algorithm is proposed for accurately and instantaneously providing the required channel state information. Meanwhile, a deep neural networks (DNN)-assisted adaptive modulation algorithm is proposed to choose the best possible transmission mode to maximize the achievable throughput. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-layer SBL algorithm enables more accurate channel estimation than the conventional techniques. The DNN-based adaptive modulator is capable of achieving a higher throughput than the learning-assisted solution based on the $k$ nearest neighbor ($k$ -NN) algorithm, and also the classic average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based solutions. Moreover, analysis shows that both the multi-layer SBL algorithm and the DNN-assisted adaptive modulator achieve better performance than their respective conventional counterparts while at a significantly lower computational complexity cost. We consider performance enhancement of asymmetrically-clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) and related optical OFDM schemes, which are variations of OFDM in intensity-modulated optical wireless communications. Unlike most existing studies on specific designs of improved receivers, this paper investigates information theoretic limits of all possible receivers. For independent and identically distributed (IID) complex Gaussian inputs, we obtain an exact characterization of information rate of ACO-OFDM with improved receivers for all SNRs. It is proved that the high-SNR gain of improved receivers asymptotically achieve 1/4 bits per channel use, which is equivalent to 3 dB in electrical SNR or 1.5 dB in optical SNR; as the SNR decreases, the maximum achievable SNR gain of improved receivers decreases monotonically to a non-zero low-SNR limit, corresponding to an information rate gain of 36.3%. For practically used constellations, we derive an upper bound on the gain of improved receivers. Numerical results demonstrate that the upper bound can be approached to within 1 dB in optical SNR by combining existing improved receivers and coded modulation. We also show that our information theoretic analyses can be extended to Flip-OFDM and PAM-DMT. This paper investigates the performance of vertical underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) systems in the presence of air bubbles and temperature gradients. We consider a generalized UWOC channel model that contains $N$ layers, each having the same distribution but with different parameters to consider the vertically inhomogeneous nature of the underwater environment. To capture the effects of air bubbles and temperature gradients on channel statistics, we model each layer with a mixture exponential-generalized Gamma distribution. A closed-form probability density function (PDF) is presented for the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio. Based on the PDF, we derive the average bit-error-rate (BER) and the ergodic capacity. Moreover, we provide asymptotic BER and ergodic capacity results in simple forms. In this paper, we propose a cost-efficient beamforming optimization algorithm for multi-user wireless communication systems associated with the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). From the baseline successive refinement algorithm, which gives a sub-optimal solution for the power minimization problem under the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) constraint at each user, several optimization techniques are proposed to reduce the computation complexity while maintaining the algorithm-level performance. To reduce the number of required multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations, we first simplify the complicated matrix inversion by utilizing the channel hardening effect. We also present the two-phase refinement process for the group-level optimization of phase-shift elements, further relaxing the computation complexity as well as the processing latency. Applying the proposed optimization techniques, as a result, numerical results show that the fully-optimized algorithm can reduce the computational costs by up to 89.4% while showing less than 1 dB power loss, leading to the practical solution for the next-generation IRS-aided communication. In this paper, we investigate the performance of an RIS-aided wireless communication system subject to outdated channel state information that may operate in both the near- and far-field regions. In particular, we take two RIS deployment strategies into consideration: (i) the centralized deployment, where all the reflecting elements are installed on a single RIS and (ii) the distributed deployment, where the same number of reflecting elements are placed on multiple RISs. For both deployment strategies, we derive accurate closed-form approximations for the ergodic capacity, and we introduce tight upper and lower bounds for the ergodic capacity to obtain useful design insights. From this analysis, we unveil that an increase of the transmit power, the Rician- $K$ factor, the accuracy of the channel state information and the number of reflecting elements help improve the system performance. Moreover, we prove that the centralized RIS-aided deployment may achieve a higher ergodic capacity as compared with the distributed RIS-aided deployment when the RIS is located near the base station or near the user. In different setups, on the other hand, we prove that the distributed deployment outperforms the centralized deployment. Finally, the analytical results are verified by using Monte Carlo simulations. Optical wireless communication (OWC) over atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors is a well-studied topic. Still, there is limited research on signal fading due to random fog in an outdoor environment for terrestrial wireless communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence with a negligible line-of-sight (LOS) direct link. We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) pointing errors, random fog with Gamma distributed attenuation coefficient, double generalized gamma (DGG) atmospheric turbulence, and asymmetrical distance between the source and destination. We develop density and distribution functions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence (FPT) channel and distribution function for the combined channel with random fog and pointing errors (FP). Using the derived statistical results, we present analytical expressions of the outage probability, average SNR, ergodic rate, and average bit error rate (BER) for both FP and FPT channels in terms of OWC system parameters. We also develop simplified and asymptotic performance analysis to provide insight on the system behavior analytically under various practically relevant scenarios. We demonstrate the mutual effects of channel impairments and pointing errors on the OWC performance, and show that the relaying system provides significant performance improvement compared with the direct transmissions, especially when pointing errors and fog becomes more pronounced. Recent research on joint source channel coding (JSCC) for wireless communications has achieved great success owing to the employment of deep learning (DL). However, the existing work on DL based JSCC usually trains the designed network to operate under a specific signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, without taking into account that the SNR level during the deployment stage may differ from that during the training stage. A number of networks are required to cover the scenario with a broad range of SNRs, which is computational inefficiency (in the training stage) and requires large storage. To overcome these drawbacks our paper proposes a novel method called Attention DL based JSCC (ADJSCC) that can successfully operate with different SNR levels during transmission. This design is inspired by the resource assignment strategy in traditional JSCC, which dynamically adjusts the compression ratio in source coding and the channel coding rate according to the channel SNR. This is achieved by resorting to attention mechanisms because these are able to allocate computing resources to more critical tasks. Instead of applying the resource allocation strategy in traditional JSCC, the ADJSCC uses the channel-wise soft attention to scaling features according to SNR conditions. We compare the ADJSCC method with the state-of-the-art DL based JSCC method through extensive experiments to demonstrate its adaptability, robustness and versatility. A hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay network (HSTRN) has been envisioned as a promising communication architecture for future wireless communications, which can prominently reduce the impact of shadow fading and expand service coverage. In this paper, we conduct theoretical performance analysis for a dual-hop communication system, consisting of multiple relays and multiple users in the HSTRN with the amplify-and-forward protocol. For the shadowing effect and the multipath effect, we introduce the shadowed-Rician distribution and Nakagami- $m$ fading to characterize the channel models for the satellite-relay and the relay-user links, respectively. Additionally, the opportunistic scheduling scheme is employed, where the optimal relay and the optimal user are selected from the alternative nodes with the maximum instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio. Thereafter, the analytical expressions including ergodic capacity and average symbol error rate (SER) are derived. More specifically, we also present the asymptotic behavior of the average SER at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SRN) regime. The theoretical analysis is validated by the numerical results. Moreover, the results also reveal that the performance of the system can be improved by increasing the number of relays and users under different channel parameters and various modulation schemes. Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) has attracted considerable attention because of its potential applications in factory automation, automated driving, and telesurgery anticipated for the era of the sixth-Generation (6G) networks. In URLLC with random channel gains and a hard delay constraint, the scheduling of backlogged queues and finite blocklength coding in the physical layer will make it very challenging to specify its performance limits. In this paper, we focus our attention on the asymptotic cross-layer analysis of URLLC when the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) is sufficiently high. More specifically, we find that a fundamental tradeoff exists among the service capability, latency, and error probability in the high SNR regime, which is characterized by a gain conservation equation. The main result of this work reveals that the sum of our defined service rate gain, real-time gain, and reliability gain is equal to one under the optimal policy. This paper studies the integration of the newly-emerged intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technology into non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs). We consider two WPCNs which communicate with a common hybrid access point (HAP), where there exists two types of devices in each WPCN, namely information receiving device (IRD) and harvest-then-transmit device (HTTD). Downlink communication from the HAP to IRDs, downlink energy transfer (ET) from the HAP to HTTDs, and uplink information transmission (IT) from the HTTDs to the HAP are assisted by two IRSs, one in each WPCN. Under this setup, we propose efficient algorithms to optimize reflection coefficients, beamforming vectors, and resource allocation for the sake of uplink sum-rate maximization, taking into account the minimum rate requirement at the IRDs. Deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as flying base stations to provide specific geographical area with air-to-ground wireless communications is expected to increase dramatically in the coming decades, owing to its flexibility, mobility and autonomy. Moreover, mobile edge computing (MEC) promises significant reduction in latency by caching popular contents at the mobile edge. In this paper, we propose a method to apply mobile edge caching on UAVs in wireless communication systems. By investigating the user request preference with the aid of latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), the caching strategy can be optimized. In the proposed system, we consider the design of intelligent caching strategies when a number of UAVs are deployed to serve ground users, where each UAV has a limited storage capacity for caching useful user contents. We use LDA to extract the user request preferences in order to intelligently cache data in the UAVs, while we utilize $k$ -means clustering to classify users and to help deploy UAVs. Besides, we consider three user-UAV association criteria, namely the user received signal to noise ratio (SNR), user preferences and the delay. Our simulation results show that, when compared to random caching, the average caching efficiency could be significantly improved from $\text{50}\%$ to $\text{70}\%$ , while the latency of our proposed system can also be greatly reduced. Channel estimation is challenging for the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communications. Since the number of coefficients of the cascaded channel among the base station (BS), the RIS, and the user equipment (UE), is the product of the number of BS antennas, the number of RIS elements, and the number of UEs, the pilot overhead can be prohibitively high. In this paper, we propose a two-timescale channel estimation framework to exploit the property that the BS-RIS channel is high-dimensional but quasi-static, while the RIS-UE channel is mobile but low-dimensional. Specifically, to estimate the quasi-static BS-RIS channel, we propose a dual-link pilot transmission scheme, where the BS transmits downlink pilots and receives uplink pilots reflected by the RIS. Then, we propose a coordinate descent-based algorithm to recover the BS-RIS channel. Since the quasi-static BS-RIS channel is estimated less frequently than the mobile channel is, the average pilot overhead can be reduced from a long-term perspective. Although the mobile RIS-UE channel has to be frequently estimated in a small timescale, the associated pilot overhead is low thanks to its low dimension. In order to satisfy the requirement of extremely high data rate in traffic hotspot regions, millimeter wave (mmWave) has attracted significant attention in wireless communication networks. While the coverage performance of mmWave networks based on the distribution of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) has been widely studied, it provides only very limited information on the link reliability. In this paper, we provide a fine-grained performance analysis of the mmWave networks with hotspots. Specifically, we first establish a general and tractable framework to investigate the performance of mmWave networks using the Poisson cluster process integrated with several features of the mmWave band. Both open and closed association strategies are considered. To show what fraction of users in the networks achieves target reliability when the SINR is given, we derive the tier association probability and the moments of the conditional SINR distribution, based on which the exact meta distributions of SINR are given. Interestingly, in clustered mmWave networks, the widely used standard and generalized beta approximations do not work well when the blockage effect is severe. To resolve this issue, we provide a modified approximation by scaling the standard beta distribution, which is shown to be closer to the exact results. We conduct extensive simulations to study the impact of mmWave and deployment features on the performance of clustered mmWave networks. Numerical results reveal that the optimal scattering variance of mmWave base stations scales with the cluster size to maximize the number of concurrent reliable links, and increasing the antenna directivity results in more reliable communications than elevating the transmit power of mmWave base stations. When the wireless communication system evolves to massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the system becomes more and more complex. Hybrid beamforming architecture provides excellent trade-off between the system performance and the complexity for the massive MIMO system. Hybrid beamforming architecture can be classified as fully-connected (FC) and sub-connected (SC) architecture. Existing studies on the system performance comparison of the two architectures are limited. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the FC and SC architecture in the multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) system. We derive the closed-form sum rate of two architectures under the same total transmission power constraint. From the results, we conclude that the system performance of FC architecture is always better than that of SC architecture. When the number of users is small or the signal noise ratio (SNR) is low, the performance difference between the FC and SC architecture is small. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is deemed as a promising solution to improve the spectral and energy efficiency of wireless communications cost-effectively. In this paper, we consider a wireless network where multiple base stations (BSs) serve their respective users with the aid of distributed IRSs in the downlink communication. Specifically, each IRS assists in the transmission from its associated BS to user via passive beamforming, while in the meantime, it also randomly scatters the signals from other co-channel BSs, thus resulting in additional signal as well as interference paths in the network. As such, a new IRS-user/BS association problem arises pertaining to optimally balance the passive beamforming gains from all IRSs among different BS-user communication links. To address this new problem, we first derive a tractable lower bound of the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the receiver of each user, termed average-signal-to-average-interference-plus-noise ratio (ASAINR), based on which two ASAINR balancing problems are formulated to maximize the minimum ASAINR among all users by optimizing the IRS-user associations without and with BS transmit power control, respectively. We also characterize the scaling behavior of user ASAINRs with the increasing number of IRS reflecting elements to investigate the different effects of IRS-reflected signal versus interference power. Moreover, to solve the two ASAINR balancing problems that are both non-convex optimization problems, we propose an optimal solution to the problem without BS power control and low-complexity suboptimal solutions to both problems by applying the branch-and-bound method and exploiting new properties of the IRS-user associations, respectively. We consider two users A and B wanting to exchange their messages MA and MB via a relay in a wireless communication network. To this aim, we have two methods: direct forward (DF) and computation and forward (CAF). In the first method, after an orthogonal multiple access (OMA) or non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) phase, the receiver decodes the two messages. In the second method, after a NOMA phase, the receiver decodes only the (modulo) sum. In the latter case the capacity region (computation region) is not known. This paper compares the two methods. To such aim, we propose a unified coding framework and identify a lower bound of achievable computation rates. We consider three constellations for the symmetric two-user Gaussian channel with Eisenstein constellation showing highest performance. We also show that a minimum signal-to-noise ratio is required for our CAF method to outperform DF, and we obtain the numerical values of such minimum ratios for the three constellations. Finally, we show achievability of our bounds, which is proved to require affine codes for computation, which has not been proved before. In this paper, a mixture Gamma shadowed (MGS) model is proposed as a unified composite distribution via representing the shadowing impact by an inverse Nakagami- $m$. The exact expression and the asymptotic behaviour at high average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime of the fundamental statistics of a MGS distribution are derived first. These statistics are then applied to analyze the performance of the wireless communication systems over double shadowed $\kappa$ - $\mu$ fading channels. In particular, the outage probability (OP), average bit error probability (ABEP), average channel capacity (ACC), effective capacity (EC) and average area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) of energy detection (ED) are provided. Cooperative beamforming is a potentially useful technique for enhancing link reliability in modern wireless relay communications. To aid the beamforming design, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the source-to-relay (S-R) channel links must be known at the destination node. Abdallah and Papadopoulos in IEEE Trans. Signal Processing, vol. 56, no. 10, 2008, proposed a beamforming system with relay-assisted SNR acquisition; that is, the S-R link SNR is first quantized at each relay and is then forwarded to the destination. An optimal quantizer design problem was proposed in that paper, aiming at reducing the system bit error rate; however, only the binary quantization case was considered therein, with the quantization threshold computed by a suggested rule of thumb. In this paper, we study the aforementioned quantizer design problem in the general multiple-bit setting. We show that the solutions to the first-order necessary condition for optimality can be obtained as a fixed point of a certain nonlinear map over the feasible threshold set. The existence and uniqueness of the fixed point are established by using, respectively, the Brouwer’s and Schauder’s fixed point theorems. Finally, we show that the fixed point thus obtained yields the globally optimal set of quantization thresholds. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first which leverages fixed point theories to rigorously solve SNR quantization problems in the context of wireless relay communication. Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) technologies play an important role in modern and future wireless communication systems as they can improve the capacity without increasing the bandwidth. MIMO detection is one of the key technologies for MIMO system designs. MIMO detection schemes based on Message Passing (MP) algorithms have attracted extensive attention in recent years. The MIMO detection scheme based on Expectation Propagation (EP), which is also a kind of MP algorithms, has been proved to achieve the Bayes-optimal performance under the conditions of large system limit and compression rate threshold. However, there is improvement space for the detection performance of the EP algorithm when the conditions are not satisfied, which are the common cases in the practical applications. In this paper, when the conditions of the large system limit and compression rate threshold are not satisfied, we analyze the influences of two factors, the initial parameters selection and the moment matching strategy, on the performance of EP based detection scheme. As a result, we propose an improved EP detection scheme based on optimizing the two factors. It is very challenging to detect an unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) when it is applied to launch an attack by the enemy’s country, due to its feature of mobility and flexibility. Against this background, in this paper, from wireless communication point of view, we study the detection probability of home country’s ground vehicle (GV) to enemy’s ground-station (GS)-to-UAV transmission system. We assume that the location of the GV is randomly distributed inside the space confined by the largest detection distance. Moreover, we assume the enemy’s UAV is randomly distributed in the coverage space of the GS-to-UAV (G2A) transmission link but also keep the security distance from the GS. To this end, we first characterize the statistical features of the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) over the G2V and G2A links. Then, we define detection outage probability (DOP) and average detection capacity (ADC), and show their approximations. In this paper, we propose a new construction of generalized root protograph (GRP) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes which has a guaranteed diversity order. New hybrid-automatic request with incremental redundancy (H-ARQ-IR) is also proposed to ensure high diversity and rate-compatibility in wireless communication systems, where the GRP LDPC codes are employed along with a method called feedback encoding. The proposed H-ARQ-IR has advantages of low-complexity and near-optimal performance. In order to show its performance behavior, theoretical analysis for the proposed scheme is conducted for the block fading channel. Furthermore, numerical analysis shows that it achieves near maximum diversity order under the belief propagation (BP) decoding with binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation and high-order quadrature amplitude modulations (QAMs). Terahertz (THz) band communication is envisioned as a key technology to satisfy the increasing demand for ultrabroadband wireless systems, thanks to its ultrabroad bandwidth. Tailored for the unique properties of pulse-based communications in the THz band, two timing acquisition algorithms are proposed and analyzed thoroughly in this paper. First, a low-sampling-rate (LSR) synchronization algorithm is proposed, by extending the theory of sampling signals with finite rate of innovation in the communication context and exploiting the properties of the annihilating filter. The simulation results show that the timing accuracy at an order of ten picoseconds is achievable. In particular, the LSR algorithm has high performance with uniform sampling at $1/20$ of the Nyquist rate when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is high (i.e., greater than 18 dB). Complementary to this, a maximum likelihood (ML) approach for timing acquisition is developed, which searches for the timing offsets by adopting a two-step acquisition procedure based on the ML criterion. The simulation results show that the ML-based algorithm is well suitable in the low SNR case with a half-reduced search space. For further evaluation, the error performance and the resulting bit-error-rate sensitivity to the timing errors in the LSR and the ML algorithms are both analytically and numerically studied. The level crossing rate (LCR) is an important second-order statistical quantity that characterizes the rate of occurrence of fading time intervals. In this paper, we investigate the LCR of multiantenna flat-fading channels in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise and cochannel interferers with unequal received powers and Doppler shifts. We first present a unified approach to derive the exact LCR of the signal-to-interference-noise ratio at a receiver, where maximum ratio combining is deployed over spatially correlated or uncorrelated systems. Through the exact LCR derivation, we identify an accurate approach to obtain a simplified approximate LCR expression in the spatially uncorrelated system case. Benefits of the LCR expressions derived in the paper are demonstrated in two important applications: 1) the packet error rate is evaluated through the finite-state Markov channel model; and 2) the optimum packet length to maximize the throughput of the system with the stop-and-wait automatic repeat request protocol is derived. Millimeter wave (mmWave) has been widely considered as a promising technology in the next generation wireless communication systems. Various beam-based directional transmission techniques have been proposed to compensate high pathloss caused by mmWave properties. However, mobility effect of users potentially causes severe inter-beam interferences, which has not been fully-investigated in existing studies. In this paper, we have analyzed different types of mobility-aware beam interference models. Additionally, the theoretical SINR is derived based on channel statistics and the trajectories of users. We propose a mobility-aware subband and beam resource allocation (MSBA) scheme for the mmWave subband-beam massive multi-input multi-output (SB-MMIMO) systems. The proposed MSBA benefits from reduced computation complexity for maximizing system throughput constrained by quality-of-service (QoS) demands of users. The first phase of MSBA scheme is responsible for resource block assignment; while the second phase allocates beamwidth and beam directions according to the analytical derivations. Numerical results show that the proposed MSBA scheme can effectively achieve the highest system throughput and the lowest complexity compared to existing schemes in open literatures. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) that enables the control of wireless propagation environment has recently emerged as a promising cost-effective technology for boosting the spectral and energy efficiency of future wireless communication systems. Prior works on IRS are mainly based on the ideal phase shift model assuming full signal reflection by each of its elements regardless of the phase shift, which, however, is practically difficult to realize. In contrast, we propose in this paper a practical phase shift model that captures the phase-dependent amplitude variation in the element-wise reflection design. Based on the proposed model and considering an IRS-aided multiuser system with one IRS deployed to assist in the downlink communications from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to multiple single-antenna users, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the total transmit power at the AP by jointly designing the AP transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming, subject to the users’ individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. Iterative algorithms are proposed to find suboptimal solutions to this problem efficiently by utilizing the alternating optimization (AO) as well as penalty-based optimization techniques. Moreover, to draw essential insight, we analyze the asymptotic performance loss of the IRS-aided system that employs practical phase shifters but assumes the ideal phase shift model for beamforming optimization, as the number of IRS elements goes to infinity. Simulation results unveil substantial performance gains achieved by the proposed beamforming optimization based on the practical phase shift model as compared to the conventional ideal model. In this paper, the effective rate (ER) of wireless communication systems and the performance of energy detection (ED) based spectrum sensing over $\alpha -\eta -\kappa -\mu$ fading channels are analysed. To this end, novel mathematically tractable exact expressions of the ER, the average detection probability (ADP) and the average area under the receiver characteristics curve (AUC) are derived. The asymptotic expressions at high average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values are also provided. A comparison between the numerical results and Monte Carlo simulations is presented to verify the validation of our analysis. The mathematical relationship between the ER and the performance metrics of the ED which is based on the time-bandwidth product, is explained. The provided results show that the increase in the time-bandwidth product from 1 to 4 reduces the ER, the ADP, and the average AUC by nearly $\text{21}\%$ , $\text{8}\%$ , and $\text{3}\%$ , respectively, for constant average SNR at 15 dB and delay exponent at 0.1. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and spectrum sharing (SS) are two emerging multiple access technologies for efficient spectrum utilization in future wireless communications standards. In this paper, we present the performance analysis of a NOMA-based cooperative relaying system (CRS) in an underlay spectrum sharing scenario, considering a peak interference constraint (PIC), where the peak interference inflicted by the secondary (unlicensed) network on the primary-user (licensed) receiver (PU-Rx) should be less than a predetermined threshold. In the proposed system the relay and the secondary-user receiver (SU-Rx) are equipped with multiple receive antennas and apply selection combining (SC), where the antenna with highest instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is selected, and maximal-ratio combining (MRC), for signal reception. Closed-form expressions are derived for the average achievable rate and outage probabilities for SS-based CRS-NOMA. These results show that for large values of peak interference power, the SS-based CRS-NOMA outperforms the CRS with conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of spectral efficiency. The effect of the interference channel on the system performance is also discussed, and in particular, it is shown that the interference channel between the secondary-user transmitter (SU-Tx) and the PU-Rx has a more severe effect on the average achievable rate as compared to that between the relay and the PU-Rx. In this paper, we investigate adaptive power allocation for generalized polar optical wireless communications (OWC), where a general complex bipolar signal is converted into magnitude and phase signals for intensity modulation. Mean square errors (MSE) between the input complex signals and the re-constructed complex signals are derived to characterize signal distortion. Optimal power scaling factors and power allocation are investigated to minimize the distortion. Under a sole average intensity constraint, closed-form optimal power scaling factors are derived and found to be input-dependent. Specifically, they are determined by the first and second moments of the magnitude signals, the first moment of the phase signals as well as the channel state. Under both average and peak intensity constraints, the expression of MSE regarding the power scaling factors is derived but it is too complicated to find the optimal power allocation. Thus, we propose to use a small-scale numerical search for practical power allocation. As an example, we adopt the proposed power allocation to polar optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (P-OFDM) systems and analyze its achievable bit error rate (BER). Numerical simulations are presented to validate the analysis. It is shown that the proposed power allocation greatly improves the performance in terms of MSE and BER and the proposed power allocation-enhanced P-OFDM (EP-OFDM) outperforms existing optical OFDM schemes over various channels in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, especially in the systems with a peak intensity constraint. Visible light communication (VLC) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are deemed two promising technologies in the next generation wireless communication systems in achieving high capacity and massive connectivity. In this paper we study the performance of a NOMA-enabled VLC system using different modulation schemes. In particular system level bit error rate (BER) is derived for different modulation schemes. Conventional methods used for analyzing the BER under orthogonal multiple access cannot be directly applied to NOMA. In order to obtain the closed-form BER expressions for the NOMA-enabled VLC systems, an analytical framework based on bitwise-decision axis and signal space is proposed.Moreover, the analysis method can be extended to the any wireless communication networks with NOMA. Simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis. The study shows that the BER gap among users decreases with the increase of the modulation order but at the cost of a higher power consumption in order to achieve a better signal to noise ratio. This paper proposes a distributed energy-harvesting random access protocol called harvest-or-access by applying slotted ALOHA to wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs). From the fact that there are a considerable number of idle slots during which any nodes do not attempt transmission in slotted ALOHA, the idle slots are made available for wireless energy transfer (WET). If any random access (RA) slot is recognized as an idle slot, the hybrid access point (HAP) opportunistically performs the WET in this slot. The wireless devices (WDs) can harvest energy for every idle slot and attempt random access by using this harvested energy. An asymptotic throughput analysis in a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment with a sufficient number of accessing WDs shows that there is an optimal number of RA slots allocated to maximize throughput and this optimal number of RA slots depends only on the average of the minimum SNRs of the WDs without knowledge of full channel state information. Monte Carlo simulation results further show that the proposed harvest-or-access protocol outperforms the conventional harvest-then-transmit-based random access protocols especially when the number of WDs is large. This paper investigates the secrecy performance of multiple-input multiple-output systems under generalized $\alpha -\mu $ fading conditions. To this end, we focus on two distinct scenarios: 1) the transmitter has knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) of the eavesdropper channel and 2) the transmitter is not aware of the CSI of the wiretap link. By considering transmit antenna selection in the underlying system, we develop closed-form analytical expressions for the lower bound of the secrecy outage probability (SOP) and the probability of the strictly positive secrecy capacity. Furthermore, two novel approaches are proposed to derive an analytical expression of the average secrecy capacity (ASC). First, the ASC is expressed as a function of the average capacity of the desired link and an interaction term regarded as the ASC loss. Second, the ASC is expressed in terms of the average capacities of the desired and eavesdropper links, plus an interaction term that can be regarded as some sort of ASC gain due to the statistical independence between the desired and eavesdropper links. Full-duplex (FD) jamming transceivers recently have been shown to enhance the information security of wireless communication systems by simultaneously transmitting artificial noise (AN) while receiving information. In this paper, we investigate whether FD jamming can also improve the system’s secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) in terms of securely communicated bits per Joule when considering the additional power used for jamming and self-interference (SI) cancellation. Moreover, the degrading effect of the residual SI is also taken into account. In this regard, we formulate a set of SEE maximization problems for a FD multiple-input-multiple-output multiple-antenna eavesdropper (MIMOME) wiretap channel, considering both cases where exact or statistical channel state information (CSI) is available. Due to the intractable problem structure, we propose iterative solutions in each case with a proven convergence to a stationary point. Numerical simulations indicate only a marginal SEE gain, through the utilization of FD jamming, for a wide range of system conditions. However, when SI can efficiently be mitigated, the observed gain is considerable for scenarios with a small distance between the FD node and the eavesdropper, a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or for a bidirectional FD communication setup. This paper investigates and optimizes the performance of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in wireless sensor networks over Nakagami- $m$ fading channels. In the considered system, there is one mobile reader ( $R$ ), which is equipped with one transmit antenna and one receive antenna, and a group of passive sensors. The information delivery includes two stages: 1) $R$ broadcasts a command with radio-frequency energy to the sensors, which adopt time splitting (TS)/power splitting (PS) schemes to harvest energy and 2) sensors deliver their information to $R$ over orthogonal channels by using the harvested energy. In this paper, we propose a unified framework to study and optimize the impact of SWIPT on the system performance with both TS and PS schemes. First, we characterize the probability density function and cumulative distribution function of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio in high signal-to-noise ratio region, then we study the outage and ergodic capacity performance of the backward links. The approximated closed-form expressions for the outage probability and ergodic capacity are derived and validated through Monte Carlo simulations. We consider the problem of multiantenna source detection with dimension reduction in distributed wireless networks. Traditional strategies typically collect and perform raw data at the fusion center. In moderate-to-large-scale networks, however, the schemes create the bottleneck of computation and communication for high-dimensional data. The goal of this paper is to design a distributed algorithm in multiple-antenna wireless networks to project the raw data into the low-dimensional data to reduce the communication and computation burden while maintaining high detection performance. In this paper, a pseudosketching matrix is constructed to transform the raw data of each multiple-antenna node into the low-dimensional data. Furthermore, it is transformed into the vector by using the subspace method. By gathering the data vectors of all nodes at the fusion center, the eigenvalue-based detection methods, such as the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT), can be applied directly to determine if the source signal exists or not. Moreover, using the concentration inequalities of subgamma random variables, the theoretical analysis is derived to support the claim that the proposed algorithm has high detection performance. Multi-channel (MC) optical wireless communication (OWC) systems employing wave-division multiplexing for outdoors free-space optical communications, or multi-user time-division multiple access for indoors visible-light communications, e.g., can be modeled as parallel channels. Multi-input multi-output OWC systems can also be transformed, possibly with some performance loss, to parallel channels using pre-/post-coding. Studying the performance of such MC-OWC systems requires characterizing the capacity of the underlying parallel channels. In this paper, upper and lower bounds on the capacity of constant parallel OWC channels with a total average intensity constraint are derived. Then, this paper focuses on finding intensity allocations that maximize the lower bounds given channel-state information at the transmitter (CSIT). Due to its nonconvexity, the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker conditions are used to describe a list of candidate allocations. Instead searching exhaustively for the best solution, low-complexity near-optimal algorithms are proposed. The resulting optimized lower bound nearly coincides with capacity at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Under a quasi-static channel model and in the absence of CSIT, outage probability upper and lower bounds are derived. Those bounds also meet at high SNR, thus characterizing the outage capacity in this regime. Finally, the results are extended to a system with both average and peak intensity constraints. In this paper, a system-level design is presented for an integrated receive circuit for a wireless ultrasound probe, which includes analog front ends and beamformation modules. This paper focuses on the investigation of the effects of architectural design choices on the image quality. The point spread function is simulated in Field II from 10 to 160 mm using a convex array transducer. A noise analysis is performed, and the minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) requirements are derived for the low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) and A/D converters (ADCs) to fulfill the design specifications of a dynamic range of 60 dB and a penetration depth of 160 mm in the B-mode image. Six front-end implementations are compared using Nyquist-rate and $\Sigma \Delta $ modulator ADCs. The image quality is evaluated as a function of the depth in terms of lateral full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) and −12-dB cystic resolution (CR). The designs that minimally satisfy the specifications are based on an 8-b 30-MSPS Nyquist converter and a single-bit third-order 240-MSPS $\Sigma \Delta $ modulator, with an SNR for the LNA in both cases equal to 64 dB. The mean lateral FWHM and CR are 2.4% and 7.1% lower for the $\Sigma \Delta $ architecture compared with the Nyquist-rate one. Carrier sense multiple access with collision notification (CSMA/CN) is a typical representation of physical-layer (PHY)/medium access control (MAC) co-designs, where the MAC control frames are implemented or detected using PHY techniques. With CSMA/CN, the sender detects an unsuccessful transmission, with the aid of a collision notification (CN) from the receiver. In this paper, we first theoretically study the crucial impact of the CN attributes (namely, the detection threshold and the length) on system throughput in a wireless local area network (WLAN). We identify that the false-alarm probability of CN (more generally, the control frames in PHY/MAC co-designs) is a dominating metric that influences system performance. This paper will help developers select optimal CN attributes to balance various factors influencing CN detection performance. G-Cast is a wireless visual communication scheme that conveys visual information via image gradient. It is inspired by the characteristics of human vision systems and can provide improved perceptual quality. G-Cast is power efficient but bandwidth demanding, because gradient data have double the size of the original image. This paper presents a scheme named CG-Cast for scalable image transmission in bandwidth-limited wireless scenarios. It employs a compressive-gradient-based image representation to describe perceptually sensitive image details and reduce the bandwidth requirement at the same time, combining gradient-based visual representation with compressive sensing techniques. The compressive gradient data are transmitted in a pseudo-analog way so that it achieves elegant quality transition in a wide channel signal-to-noise ratio (CSNR) range. CG-Cast also sends a small set of low-frequency data in digital a way to provide the global and local luminance of the image. We developed an effective optimization algorithm for the decoder to reconstruct the original image from the received noisy compressive gradient and the low-frequency part of the image. Spatial modulation is emerging as a promising signal transmission paradigm for future wireless communications relying on massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. In this paper, the receive spatial modulation (RSM) is applied to the downlink of multi-user MIMO systems with the base station equipped with a massive array of antennas. Due to the significant overhead associated with acquiring channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) of frequency-division-duplex massive MIMO systems, herein we propose a preprocessing scheme for correlated channels that reduces the channel estimation overheads. The proposed preprocessing method relies on the partial CSIT and consists of two stages of beamforming and precoding. The beamforming is accomplished via block-diagonalization to combat multi-user interference while the precoding matrix is designed by formulating optimization problems aiming to eliminate inter-antenna interference and enhancing RSM transmission performance. The design criteria of the problems include bit-error-rate minimization and discrete-input continuous-output (DCMC) capacity maximization with a transmit power constraint. The arising non-convex problems are cast as semi-definite and second-order cone programs that can be solved efficiently. The proposed schemes are readily extended to generalized RSM as the most comprehensive case in RSM-MIMO scenarios. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed schemes outperform the imperfect-CSIT based and two-stage zero-forcing procedures and offer similar or significant performance compared to conventional MIMO counterparts at low to mid signal-to-noise ratio regimes, depending on the configurations. Integrating the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into the cellular network is envisioned to be a promising technology to significantly enhance the communication performance of both UAVs and existing terrestrial users. In this paper, we first provide an overview on the two main research paradigms in cellular UAV communications, namely, cellular-enabled UAV communication with UAVs as new aerial users served by the ground base stations (GBSs), and UAV-assisted cellular communication with UAVs as new aerial communication platforms serving the terrestrial users. Then, we focus on the former paradigm and study a new UAV trajectory design problem subject to practical communication connectivity constraints with the GBSs. Specifically, we consider a cellular-connected UAV in the mission of flying from an initial location to a final location that are given, during which it needs to maintain reliable communication with the cellular network by associating with one of the available GBSs at each time instant that has the best line-of-sight channel (or shortest distance) with it. We aim to minimize the UAV’s mission completion time by optimizing its trajectory, subject to a quality-of-connectivity constraint of the GBS-UAV link specified by a minimum receive signal-to-noise ratio target, which needs to be satisfied throughout its mission. To tackle this challenging non-convex optimization problem, we first propose an efficient method to verify its feasibility via checking the connectivity between two given vertices on an equivalent graph. Next, by examining the GBS-UAV association sequence over time, we obtain useful structural results on the optimal UAV trajectory, based on which two efficient methods are proposed to find high-quality approximate trajectory solutions by leveraging the techniques from graph theory and convex optimization. The proposed methods are analytically shown to be capable of achieving a flexible tradeoff between complexity and performance, and yielding a solution in polynomial time with the performance arbitrarily close to that of the optimal solution. Numerical results further validate the effectiveness of our proposed designs against benchmark schemes. Finally, we make concluding remarks and point out promising directions for future work. The position and time of mobile agents are essential information for many wireless network applications. In this paper, we propose a single-anchor localization and synchronization scheme of full-duplex (FD) agents in the line-of-sight scenario, where the anchor is equipped with an antenna array. The agents perform inter-node ranging using the FD radios, while the anchor only receives signals transmitted from the agents. We derive the Cramér-Rao lower bounds for the agent positions and clock offsets based on the frames received by the agents and anchor. In particular, the Fisher information matrix for the positions and clock offsets can be decomposed into the information from the measurements of the arrival angles and arrival times. Then, we design the channel estimation algorithm to obtain the arrival angles, arrival times, and signal-to-noise ratios, based on which we further develop the network localization and synchronization algorithms to obtain the agent positions and clock offsets. This paper studies interference exploitation techniques for secure beamforming design in simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in multiple-input single-output systems. In particular, multiuser interference (MUI) and artificially generated noise (AN) signals are designed as constructive to the information receivers (IRs) yet kept disruptive to potential eavesdropping by the energy receivers. The objective is to improve the received signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) at the IRs by exploiting the MUI and AN power in an attempt to minimize the total transmit power. We first propose second-order cone programming-based solutions for the perfect channel state information (CSI) case by defining strong upper and lower bounds on the energy harvesting (EH) constraints. We then provide semidefinite programming-based solutions for the problems. In addition, we also solve the worst case harvested energy maximization problem under the proposed bounds. Finally, robust beamforming approaches based on the above are derived for the case of imperfect CSI. Our results demonstrate that the proposed constructive interference precoding schemes yield huge saving in transmit power over conventional interference management schemes. Most importantly, they show that, while the statistical constraints of conventional approaches may lead to instantaneous SINR as well as EH outages, the instantaneous constraints of our approaches guarantee both constraints at every symbol period. In vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, link reliability has been regarded as an important performance metric, especially for safety-critical broadcast services. In this paper, we analyze the link reliability of the centralized mode (Mode 3) for long-term evolution (LTE)-based V2V (LTE-V2V) from the PHY/MAC perspectives. Moreover, we derive the statistical distribution of the interference distance and interference to noise ratio (INR) for LTE-V2V. Based on this analytical framework, we propose a resource size control (RSC) method for improving link reliability. The proposed RSC adapts the resource size according to the macroscopic network parameters such as vehicle density, communication range, and message size. Numerical results show that the proposed method improves link reliability compared with the fixed resource size setting in a highway scenario. In this paper, the advantages of joint detection (JD) in a hybrid-duplex unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication system (HBD-UCS) are investigated as a step toward addressing spectrum scarcity in UAV communications. Through extensive outage probability and finite signal-to-noise-ratio diversity gain analysis, we showed that the performance of JD is independent of the strength and the data rate of the inter-UAV interference signal. On the contrary, the successive interference cancellation (SIC) detector requires the data rate of the interfering UAV to be less than the ground station before meaningful performance can be seen. At the system level, it is observed that the half-duplex UAV communication system outperforms the HBD-UCS with JD at moderate and high SNR regimes, as the latter is constrained by self-interference at the full-duplex ground station. Visible light communication (VLC) based simultaneous positioning and orientating (SPAO), using received signal strength (RSS) measurements, is studied in this paper. RSS-based SPAO for VLCs of great challenge as it is essentially a non-convex optimization problem due to the nonlinear RSS model. To address this non-convexity challenge, a novel particle-assisted stochastic search (PASS) algorithm is proposed. The proposed PASS-based SPAO scheme does not require the knowledge of the height of receiver, the perfect alignment of transceiver orientations or inertial measurements. This is a huge technical improvement over the existing VLC localization solutions. The algorithmic convergence is established to justify the proposed PASS algorithm. In addition, a closed-form Cramer–Rao lower bound (CRLB) on localization error is derived and analyzed to gain insights into how the VLC-based SPAO performance is related to system configurations. It is shown that the receiver's position and orientation accuracy is linear with signal-to-noise ratio and direction information. In addition, the position accuracy decays with six powers of the transceiver distance, while the orientation accuracy decays with four powers of the transceiver distance. A major challenge in designing a spectral co-existence between radar and communication systems is how to simultaneously provide efficient utilization of the shared spectrum while maintaining a reliable performance for both systems. Due to its flexibility in using linear independent waveforms and superiority in terms of target detection and estimation, the collocated multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radars provide a paramount capability in realizing spectrum sharing with communication systems. In this paper, we consider the use of joint transmit and receive beamformers for both the MIMO radar and MIMO communication systems. Specifically, we design a two-tier alternating optimization spectrum sharing framework that is based on interference alignment (IA) approach. The effectiveness of spectrum sharing between radar and communication systems is guaranteed by mitigating the mutual interference signals in the shared spectral band. Subsequently, motivated by the excellent performance provided by IA in different wireless network scenarios, we propose a spectrum sharing framework that consists of a main iterative algorithm with two subalgorithms included within its operation. The first subalgorithm is used to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio of the radar system, whereas the second one is utilized to maximize the average sum-rate of the communication system. The main iterative algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the transmit and receive beamforming filters of both systems by performing alternating optimization between the two subalgorithms. The convergences of the proposed algorithm and its subalgorithms are numerically verified. Simulation results are provided to confirm the superiority of the proposed framework for both systems. To improve the secrecy performance of the untrusted relay system with a multiple-antenna destination, a novel full-duplex destination jamming scheme with optimal antenna selection (FDJ-OAS) is proposed in this paper. The approximate closed-form expressions of the average achievable secrecy rate are derived for the proposed scheme. To attain more insightful results, the approximated closed-form expressions for the average achievable secrecy rate and the optimal power allocation factor for FDJ-OAS are derived in the case with a large-scale antenna array, and simple power allocation solutions are also provided in the high and low SNR regimes, respectively. Furthermore, we derive the asymptotic expressions for the secrecy outage probability under different asymptotic conditions for the proposed scheme, and the analysis results indicate that the secrecy diversity order of FDJ-OAS is significantly superior to that of the comparable schemes. Simulation results show that the analytical curves match well with the simulation results, and the advantage of FDJ-OAS is also clearly demonstrated through performance comparison.
