China is currently the world's largest producer and consumer of iron and steel. This industry is one of the most energy- and emission-intensive industries in China. It is unsuspicious that energy conservation and emission reduction in this industry are crucial for China to fulfill its obligations of reducing greenhouse gas emission and mitigating global climate change. An appropriate allocation of CO2 emissions permit is the most important precondition for establishing an efficient and effective emissions trading system that had recently been launched in China's pilot regions. This paper proposes a new emissions permit allocation method based on a Nash equilibrium data envelopment analysis model. This method is more appropriate in emissions permit allocation for China's iron and steel firms in an imperfectly competitive market where the product price is endogenous. A noncooperative game is formulated and the mixed complementarity problem is utilized to identify a Nash equilibrium in the allocation of emissions permit (AEP). The most up-to-date AEP using a unique data set of China's major iron and steel enterprises in 2014 is provided in this paper. This paper aims to understand the underlying mechanisms by which relational ties influence firm innovation. Companies in China rely much on relational ties to implement business strategies. Combining social network theory with dynamic capability perspective, we build a model that analyzes the direct and indirect impact of relational ties (business ties and service ties) on innovation performance through supply chain adaptability. We further analyze that technological turbulence and dysfunctional competition influence the relationships between relational ties and supply chain adaptability. We test these relationships using data collected from 300 manufacturers in China. The results show that service ties plays a relatively more important role than business ties in enhancing innovation performance directly. Interactions between business ties and service ties significantly influence innovation performance. Moreover, our results demonstrate that supply chain adaptability fully mediates the relationship between business ties and innovation performance but partially mediates the relationship between service ties and innovation performance. Our results show that technological turbulence positively moderates the relationships between business/service ties and supply chain adaptability. In addition, dysfunctional competition negatively moderates the relationship between business ties and supply chain adaptability. Drawing on new institutional economics and the innovation literature, this paper examines how subnational institutions can impact corporate research and development (R&D) investment in emerging economies. The study further investigates a key contingency of this institutional effect: a firm's country/ownership identity. Using China's pharmaceutical sector as the empirical context, we find that the quality of subnational institutions, such as the degree of government deregulation and the effectiveness of local contracting institutions, has a significantly positive impact on corporate R&D intensity. Moreover, this institutional effect is more salient in indigenous firms and international joint ventures than in wholly owned foreign subsidiaries. This study serves to shed light on future research on how multifaceted subnational institutions shape innovation activities across different types of business organizations in emerging economies. Synchrophasors, widely used in the monitoring and analysis of power systems, evolved from the phasor method presented by Charles Proteus Steinmetz in 1893. The phasor method is a mathematical method for solving linear sinusoidal steady-state circuits and time-varying electromagnetic fields. This paper traces the history and diffusion of the phasor method in the discipline of electrical engineering in China. In 1914, Sidney Roby Sheldon, an American teacher at the Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry, Shanghai, China, introduced the phasor method to his students in his Alternating Currents course. The textbook used was Elements of Electrical Engineering (Volume II) by William Suddards Franklin and William Esty. In 1920, The Electrical Magazine published a paper “Complex number and its application” by Sijiu Shi (editor of the electrical engineering section of this periodical). This is the earliest example found of Chinese literature introducing the phasor method. In the 1930s, Principles of Alternating Currents, an American electrical engineering textbook that includes the phasor method, was translated by Chinese scholars; this Chinese version promoted the use of the phasor method in China's electrical engineering field. Alternating Current Circuits, authored by the Chinese university professor Pen Tung Sah and published in 1948, may be the earliest example of the phasor method being included in a Chinese electrical engineering textbook; it played an important role in popularizing the phasor method in China. Existing literature argues, in general terms, that China has a growing need for technical communication and technical communication education. Following up on these studies, this paper more closely examines China's needs for technical communication education. Based on interviews with industry professionals and reviews of their writing samples, this paper seeks to find out who among the industry professionals in China needs technical communication, what their communication practices are, the areas in which they need education, and what US technical communication professionals can do to help develop this education. Due to the rapid urbanization of China, many villages in the urban fringe are enveloped by ever-expanding cities and become so-called urban villages (UVs) with substandard living conditions. Despite physical similarities to informal settlements in other countries (e.g., slums in India), UVs have access to basic public services, and more importantly, villagers own the land legitimately. The resulting socio-economic impact on urban development attracts increasing interest. However, the identification of UVs in previous studies relies on fieldwork, leading to late and incomplete analyses. In this paper, we present three scene-based methods for detecting UVs using high-resolution remotely sensed imagery based on a novel multi-index scene model and two popular scene models, i.e., bag-of-visual-words and supervised latent Dirichlet allocation. In the experiments, our index-based approach produced Kappa values around 0.82 and outperformed conventional models both quantitatively and visually. Moreover, we performed multitemporal classification to evaluate the transferability of training samples across multitemporal images with respect to three methods, and the index-based approach yielded best results again. Finally, using the detection results, we conducted a systematic spatiotemporal analysis of UVs in Shenzhen and Wuhan, two mega cities of China. At the city level, we observe the decline of UVs in urban areas over the recent years. At the block level, we characterize UVs quantitatively from physical and geometrical perspectives and investigate the relationships between UVs and other geographic features. Teaching how to conduct productive research in a classroom setting is a challenge. This article reports on an attempt to scale up the research training in a class of 41 undergraduate and graduate students. The research topic, information aesthetics, covers information visualization and generative art. Seven teams were set up to conduct seven different projects within the topic, and several were able to produce quality research papers published or accepted by journals and conferences. The authors report on their approaches to teaching information aesthetics as a research topic, team set up, and team assessment as well as on the final results in terms of research output. Ziyuan1-02C (ZY1-02C) was launched on December 22, 2011, and it is the first civilian high-resolution remote sensing satellite in China. However, the limited precision of the onboard attitude measurement system causes many errors during attitude transfer by ZY1-02C. Thus, there are complex distortions in the images obtained by ZY1-02C, which restricts its application greatly. In this paper, we consider the feasibility of attitude error correction based on parallel observations with high-resolution cameras, and the method is described in detail. To validate the efficiency of the proposed method, several images and corresponding control data were collected from the Henan, Taihang Mountain, Neimeng, and Taiyuan areas in China. The experimental results indicate that seamless mosaic images without distortion can be obtained using our method. Furthermore, the positioning accuracy with a few ground control points (GCPs) was shown to be better than 1.5 pixels and equivalent to the accuracy of the GCPs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This paper explores how interfirm variations in their in-licensed technology portfolios influence subsequent innovation performance. Existing studies mainly assume licensed technologies are homogeneously accessible to firms, and a prevailing explanation as to why firms vary in their innovation performance lies in differences of absorptive capacity. In this study, we intend to relax this assumption and use data about 186 Chinese indigenous firms to investigate how differences in in-licensing portfolios lead to different effects on innovation performance. We find that firms benefit from prior in-licensing technologies and the result is related to four dimensions of their licensing portfolios. We find that 1) the scale of firms’ technology in-licensing has an inverted-U relationship with their subsequent innovation performance; 2) firms that license-in foreign technologies tend to outperform those that predominantly license-in technologies from domestic sources; 3) the newness of firms’ technology in-licensing yields a positive effect on subsequent innovation performance; and 4) a diverse portfolio of licensors from whom technologies are licensed-in has an inverted-U relationship with firms’ subsequent technological diversity. Setting in China's emerging economy, this study examines the underlyingworkingmechanisms through which acquisitive learning and experimental learning produce positive impacts on indigenous innovation. We theorize that behavior control and output control will have different moderating effects on the learning and indigenous innovation relationships. Empirical analyses of a survey dataset of 607 Chinese firms provide supporting evidence to the theoretical model advanced in this study. Experimental learning mediates the relationship between acquisitive learning and indigenous innovation. Behavior control negatively moderates the relationship between acquisitive learning and indigenous innovation, while positively moderates the relationship between experimental learning and indigenous innovation. The moderating effects of output control on the relationships between both types of learning and indigenous innovation are significant and inverse-Ushaped. The paper concludes with a discussion of the relevant theoretical contributions and practical implications stemming from these findings, study limitations, and potential future research directions. This paper examines how multinational corporations (MNCs) protect their intellectual property (IP) when they conduct R&D in countries with weak IP rights (IPRs) protection. Findings from a small-scale survey and three case studies in China show that hierarchical segmentation of the R&D process can provide an effective way for IPR protection. Furthermore, a modular R&D structure adopted by many information technology companies can facilitate the hierarchical segmentation. Because R&D is becoming distributed across locations with varying levels of IPR protection, a center-peripheral R&D organizational structure is emerging within MNCs as R&D globalization proceeds.
