Motors and inverters are increasingly being used in vehicles. As more vehicle components are being adopted, requirement for safety and installation space are increasing. Growing attention is being paid to the use of six-phase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and their parallel control by two inverters, because of their reduced size and enhanced safety. This paper proposes a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control algorithm for a six-phase PMSM. In low-voltage vehicle components such as electric power steering, the current is usually acquired with resistors placed under the low-side switching devices. In the proposed control algorithm, the neutral voltage of the two inverters is shifted to either a lower or higher voltage within a certain range to allow for the signal conditioning time delay after the switching device turns on or off, and the time taken for the phase current to rise or settle. The paper proposes a novel PWM control algorithm that ensures that the on-time of the low-side switching devices satisfies the restriction on current sensing with resistors and reduces the current in the capacitor at the same time. Enhancement of dc bus voltage utilization for a five-level inverter with single dc source and capacitor-fed H-bridge (CHB) units is investigated in this paper. A carrier-based modulation technique is used for boosting the dc bus utilization, which is established by providing detailed mathematical analysis. The five-level inverter used here is realized by cascading a CHB unit to each phase of a three-level neutral point clamped inverter. The increase in dc bus voltage utilization owes to the pole voltage redundancies offered by CHB units. The floating capacitors of H-bridge units are balanced within a quarter fundamental cycle using the switching state redundancies of pole voltage levels. The aforementioned modulation technique allows the inverter to enhance the dc bus utilization from 0.577 $\text{V}_{\text{dc}}$ to 0.63 $\text{V}_{\text{dc}}$ under unity power factor. This enhancement is obtained in the linear modulation range without increasing the dc bus voltage, and thus, the inverter can operate without the presence of low-order harmonics in its phase voltages. The strength of this paper lies in its detailed mathematical analysis for finding out the limiting modulation index and power factor condition in the light of floating capacitor voltage balancing issue. Simulation as well as experimental verification of the modulation scheme is carried out on an induction motor drive under various operating conditions. This paper proposes a novel method for instantaneous balancing of neutral-point (NP) voltages with stacked multilevel inverters (MLIs) for variable-speed drives. The stacked MLI uses series-connected dc sources and NPs (connecting points of dc sources) to obtain the desired levels. The balancing of NP voltages are obtained by using a low-voltage-capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridge (CHB) per phase of a symmetrical six-phase induction machine (IM), which ensures zero current drawn from NPs (at any given instant). Since no current is drawn from NPs, the single dc-link operation with stacked capacitors is also possible. The scheme is suitable for applications, where low-voltage dc sources and batteries are stacked to form a dc link. A variable-speed operation is done using a seven-level inverter scheme for a symmetrical six-phase IM, which is formed by three dc-link stacked capacitors cascaded with two low-voltage-capacitor-fed CHBs per phase. Furthermore, the method is extended for an open-end IM to obtain a seven-level common-mode eliminated space vector structure using a single dc link. The generalization of this method for any stacked $n$ -level inverter without NP voltage deviation is also presented in this paper. This paper proposes a new dc–ac converter with a reduced number of semiconductor switches and gate drive and control circuit components. A salient feature of this inverter is its pure sinusoidal line-to-line voltages with no need for output filter. Also, the proposed inverter improves the voltage utilization factor of the input dc supply compared to the four-switch three-phase inverter (first best topology in the literature from the number of switches point of view) and standard six-switch inverter with sine pulsewidth modulation. The proposed inverter is capable of operating with a wide range of output voltages from zero to the full value of the dc input voltage by appropriately altering the instantaneous duty cycle. A three-phase universal inverter with only three power switch has been proposed in this paper for the first time ever, to our knowledge. For the purpose of providing a good compromise between fast transient response and stability, a model predictive controller is proposed. All the design expressions have been derived. This paper proposes generation of a 15-level (14 concentric) dodecagonal voltage space vector structure (DVSVS) for a star connected induction motor drive. The proposed multilevel DVSVS is obtained by cascading two inverters, namely a primary and secondary inverter. The primary inverter is a five-level (5L) structure formed by stacking two three-level flying capacitors with individual reduced dc sources and the secondary inverter is also a 5L structure formed by cascading two capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridges (CHB). The active power is supplied by the primary inverter, while the secondary inverter acts as switched capacitor harmonics filter, and capacitors in the secondary inverter are balanced naturally irrespective of load power factor for entire modulation index. The high-voltage dc supply fed primary inverter is operated in quasi-square wave mode, while the high frequency switching is applied to low voltage CHBs, thus, reducing the overall switching loss. The proposed scheme gives the advantages of both DVSVS and multilevel structure, thus, making it one of the solutions for battery or stacked dc-fed applications. This paper proposes a new single-phase single-stage switched-boost inverter with four switches. Like the quasi-Z-source inverter and quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI), the proposed inverter has the main features as continuous input current, buck/boost voltage with single-stage conversion, and shoot-through immunity. Compared to the qSBI, the proposed inverter uses one more capacitor and one less switch. This paper presents the operating principles, pulse-width modulation control strategy, parameter design guidelines, and simulation results for the proposed inverter. To verify the performance of the proposed inverter, an 800-W prototype was built with an 110 V/50 Hz output voltage in stand-alone and grid-connected modes. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. This paper analyzes the combination in a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHBI) based on transformers with the different turn ratios for increasing the voltage level and proposes the switching method for achieving the output voltage distribution among H-bridge cells (HBCs). The transformers used in this paper are connected to the output of the respective HBCs, and the secondary sides of all the transformers are connected in series for generating the final output voltage. Only one of the transformers, in particular, has a different turn ratio for increasing the output voltage level. In this paper, the possible turn ratio of the special transformer with a different turn ratio is discussed in detail, and a switching method based on the level-shifted switching method for the topology used in this paper is proposed. This paper proposes a current-fed single-phase inverter without constant intermediate DC link. It eliminates electrolytic capacitor from the DC-link and introduces an intermediate pulsating DC bus. The proposed topology is modular with three full-bridges making it scalable for high-power applications. New pulsating-DC-modulation for back-end pulsating DC-link inverter and secondary modulation (SM) for front-end DC-to-pulsating DC converter is proposed. Soft-switching and device voltage clamping of both primary side and secondary side devices of front-end current-fed full-bridge converter is realized. A rotating partial hybrid pulsewidth modulation has been introduced. One leg of inverter is commutated at a low switching frequency, while the other leg is operated at a high switching frequency for partial period of a line frequency cycle. Thus, switching losses of the back-end inverter are considerably reduced. Rotating mechanism is used to equalize the switching losses of four switches of the inverter. This paper presents a novel six-pulse low-frequency (LF) fluctuating high-voltage dc-bus-based power system architecture for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) application. A novel hybrid modulation scheme consisting of six-pulse modulation at LF scale and modified secondary modulation and 33% pulse width modulation at high-frequency (HF) scale is proposed. Three-phase ac waveforms for the propulsion system of FCVs are generated from LF fluctuating high-voltage dc bus. The proposed modulation technique significantly reduces the switching losses of the bidirectional dual-stage inverter: 1) soft-switching of both sides of the front-end current-fed full-bridge converter is realized; and 2) at any moment, only one leg of back-end three-phase inverter is switched at HF, while the other two legs are kept in on or off states. This tremendously reduces the bidirectional inverter's switching losses and improves the system efficiency. The LF fluctuating high-voltage dc bus allows the elimination of large electrolytic dc-link capacitor, which contributes to a more reliable and compact design. In this paper, new half-bridge and full-bridge topologies for a switched-boost inverter are proposed. These topologies have a high boost factor in comparison with conventional types. In addition, the proposed topologies have continuous input current and can generate zero-voltage level in output. In this paper, the operation of the proposed inverters in different operating modes is analyzed. Then, the values of inductors and capacitors are designed. Moreover, the used switching pattern and its logical diagram are introduced. A comprehensive comparison between the proposed and conventional topologies in terms of the boost factor, the number of elements, and the efficiency shows the good features of the proposed inverters. This paper proposes an active switching harmonic current reduction method within the dc-link capacitor of two-level, three-phase, back-to-back converters. This method is based on the derived analytical solution for switching harmonic currents in the dc-link. It is shown that by controlling the pulse width modulation carrier waveform's phase angles, the harmonics in the second carrier band of the rectifier and the inverter can be synchronized such that cancellation occurs in the dc-link capacitor. In this paper, direct torque control (DTC) of five-phase induction motor (FPIM) is implemented using three-level neutral point clamped (TL-NPC) inverter. One of the advantages of three-level inverter over two-level one for DTC operation is the low torque ripple. Also TL-NPC inverter through space vector modulation technique gives low $ dv/dt$ transition with better voltage waveform. By applying conventional lookup table for DTC, the TL-NPC inverter does not ensures lower $dv/dt$ transition. In this paper, a novel switching scheme for DTC of FPIM using TL-NPC inverter is proposed that ensures the low $ dv/dt$ transition and balancing of dc-link capacitor voltages of TL-NPC inverter. To form the lookup table for DTC operation, instead of using voltage vectors directly, virtual vectors (VVs) are utilized. Two switching states are used in one sample time to generate a VV in $\alpha \beta$ plane, which gives zero resultant voltage in $ xy$ plane. The switching strategy ensures low number of transitions to reduce the switching losses. The switching state redundancies are used in a novel way to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages without using any additional hardware. The performance of modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in medium-voltage applications, where the number of required submodules is not high, can be improved utilizing low switching frequency modulations such as (2N+1) selective harmonic elimination-pulse width modulation (SHE-PWM), which provides tight control of lower order harmonics and low switching losses. This paper proposes a calculation method, which is based on a novel formulation, to solve the SHE-PWM problem. In particular, MMCs with (2N+1) phase output voltage levels are considered, obtaining a (2N+1) SHE-PWM waveform. This method utilizes a unique system of equations that is valid for any possible waveform. Therefore, it is able to calculate simultaneously, without predefined waveforms, both the switching patterns and the associated firing angles that solve the (2N+1) SHE-PWM problem. Consequently, the search process is simplified and optimized. Furthermore, this paper also proposes a circulating current control technique, which can be applied along with (2N+1) SHE-PWM without disturbing the phase output voltage. Simulation results and experimental tests obtained with a single-phase laboratory prototype prove the validity of the novel (2N+1) SHE-PWM implementation method and the proposed circulating current control technique. The objective of this paper is to propose a novel photovoltaic (PV) micro-inverter with PV current decoupling (PVCD) strategy to achieve maximum power point tracking (MPPT) performance without using large electrolytic capacitors. Conventionally, the grid-connected PV micro-inverter needs a large PV-side electrolytic capacitor to suppress the double-line frequency voltage ripple, which is caused by the injected ac grid power, to achieve the desired MPPT performance. However, the short lifetime electrolytic capacitor will reduce the PV micro-inverter's reliability dramatically. Therefore, different active power decoupling circuits (APDCs) have been proposed in published papers to reduce the required input capacitance so that the long lifetime film capacitor can be used to replace the electrolytic capacitor. Unlike the conventional APDC with charging and discharging modes operation, a novel PVCD strategy, which is based on the concept of current decoupling instead of power decoupling, is proposed to simplify the control mechanism of the PV micro-inverter. Furthermore, to accomplish the proposed current decoupling concept, a novel circuit topology for the PV micro-inverter is also proposed. With the proposed PVCD strategy, the current decoupling tank (CDT) inside the proposed PV micro-inverter can buffer the current difference between the constant current from the PV panel and the rectified sinusoidal current of the ac grid current. Therefore, the input capacitance on the PV-side can be reduced dramatically and the long lifetime film capacitor can be used to replace the electrolytic capacitor. The reliability of the PV micro-inverter with good MPPT performance can be increased. This paper proposes an effective sliding mode controller (SMC) for a grid-connected 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) inverter. The aim is to design a simple controller that deals effectively with the complex control problem of the PUC7 inverter (multiobjective control problem). The selection of the control actions is achieved according to the system state error at every sampling time, regardless of the previous values, which makes the control technique model-independent. The control algorithm evaluates online two cost functions (one for each state error), which are derived on the basis of sliding mode theory, and it selects the optimal control input in order to satisfy the reaching conditions of the two cost functions. Compared with the existing solutions, the proposed SMC technique ensures lower average switching frequency by tuning the hysteresis bandwidth of the capacitor-voltage error. The fast implementation, needless of gains tuning, and simple design procedure are the main features of the proposed algorithm. This paper presents a reduced component count five-level inverter topology based on the stacked cell approach to multilevel inverters. The proposed topology utilizes the fundamental properties of three-phase voltages to reduce the number of switches and flying capacitors to cut size, weight and costs while facilitating higher reliability, simpler wiring and lesser electromagnetic interference. The operational aspects of the topology such as circuit structure, modulation and capacitor balancing are explained, followed by an account of device stresses and reliability. A discussion of certain additional features such as fault tolerant operation, loss steering and common-mode elimination addresses the usefulness of the topology in practical situations. A comparison of the proposed topology with existing methods in terms of several parameters is then used to highlight its merits and features. Reliability of power systems can be improved by the use of voltage source inverters (VSIs) with fast dynamic control, which can handle uncertainties induced by renewable energy resources and nonlinear loads. To ensure fast-dynamic response and simplified controller design, various model predictive control (MPC) methods are investigated in this paper. In the conventional MPC design for three-level VSIs, the cost function requires an additional term to ensure the balance of the neutral-point voltage (NP-V), which however can considerably impact the main goal of the MPC. To address this issue, an enhanced MPC using virtual space vectors is proposed, which allows the use of a significantly reduced weighting factor for the term in the cost function for NP-V balancing, while retaining fast-dynamic response. Additionally, the proposed MPC leads to reduced harmonic distortion in the VSI output voltage and current. Both simulation and controller hardware-in-the-loop studies are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed enhanced MPC in an operating microgrid under both steady-state and fast-transient conditions. Recently multilevel inverters (MLIs) have received wide attention from industry and academia, as they are changing into a viable technology for diverse applications. To produce high-quality output using less switch count, development of novel reduced switch MLI (RS MLI) topologies has been a focus of current research theme. This paper presents design and control of a switched-diode dual source single switch MLI (SDDS MLI). The generalized SDDS MLI is first designed using an asymmetric basic unit. Proposed SDDS MLI requires less switch count and driver circuit count compared with the few recently developed RS MLI topologies. To improve the voltage quality by eliminating targeted low-order harmonics, a modified version of fish swarm optimization algorithm is examined for computing optimum switching angles required to control the SDDS MLI. Moreover, suitability and superiority of the derived algorithm are established by comparing with traditional selective harmonic elimination techniques. This paper proposes a voltage-source parallel resonant Class E inverter. The proposed circuit has a shunt capacitor including parasitic capacitance of a switching device and achieves zero-voltage switching and zero-voltage derivative switching at turning-on like a classical Class E inverter. Therefore, high power conversion efficiency is achieved under high operating frequency. Unlike the other Class E inverters, the proposed circuit has no choke inductor or dc blocking capacitor. Moreover, it has a parallel resonant tank unlike the classical Class E inverter. Thus, a circuit protection is not required in a wireless power transfer system. Circuit analysis, circuit simulations, and circuit experiments were carried out. In this paper, a new Lyapunov-based model predictive controller is proposed for a 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) grid-connected inverter. A cost function of the proposed model predictive controller is designed from the system stability point of view, inspired by the Lyapunov control theory. The proposed controller eliminates the need for gains that are associated with cost function coefficients, as seen in classical model predictive control based controllers. Therefore, the control design problem is significantly simplified. In addition, the average switching frequency is also reduced, as shown in both simulation and experimental results, leading to a reduction in switching losses. Simulation and experimental tests, on a PUC7 lab prototype, demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed control system, in terms of high disturbance rejection, robustness to parameter mismatches, and fast dynamic response. The magnetic resonant wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a class E inverter has wide application in mid-range power transmission, especially for several megahertz scenario. However, it is cumbersome for the existing modeling and analysis methods to obtain the analytical solution to the system variables, which limits the evaluation of system characteristic. This paper proposes a nonlinear mathematical model for the WPT system with a class E inverter. The equivalent small parameter method (ESPM) is first adopted to solve the proposed six-order nonlinear model, and symbolic-form steady-state periodic solutions are yielded. During the whole solving process, only three iteration steps are needed for the proposed method. Compared with other existing modeling and analysis methods, the symbolic periodic results acquired by the ESPM exhibit sufficient accuracy by virtue of the combination of more higher harmonics. In this paper, a generalized switching modification method is proposed to reduce the root-mean-square (rms) current flowing into a dc-link capacitor in a dc–dc–ac structure consisting of a boost converter and a three-phase inverter. To analyze the current flowing into the capacitor, we analyze the currents at the respective converter and inverter sides. Based on this analysis, we derive an analytical method to find the modification time between the converter and inverter pulsewidth modulation (PWM) carriers through a Fourier series and approximation to facilitate real-time implementation. Real-time implementation of the modification time calculated by the derived method is described. To verify the validity of the proposed method, experimental results are presented based on a 1-kVA dc–dc–ac prototype. The proposed method has a better capacitor rms current reduction performance than the conventional method in various inverter power factors and PWM strategies. In this paper, a new space vector pulse width modulation method to extend the linear modulation range of a cascaded five level inverter topology with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the inverter can be controlled linearly and the peak phase fundamental output voltage of the inverter can be increased from 0.577 to 0.637 V\text{dc} without increasing the dc bus voltage and without exceeding the induction motor voltage rating. This new technique makes use of cascaded inverter pole voltage redundancy and property of the space vector structure for its operation. Using this, the induction motor drive can be operated till the full speed range (0–50 Hz) with the elimination of lower order harmonics in the phase voltage and phase current. Increasing demands for power supplies have contributed to the population of high-frequency ac (HFAC) power distribution system (PDS), and in order to increase the power capacity, multilevel inverters (MLIs) frequently serving as the high-frequency (HF) source-stage have obtained a prominent development. Existing MLIs commonly use more than one voltage source or a great number of power devices to enlarge the level numbers, and HF modulation (HFM) methods are usually adopted to decrease the total harmonic distortion (THD). All of these have increased the complexity and decreased the efficiency for the conversion from dc to HF ac. In this paper, a nine-level inverter employing only one input source and fewer components is proposed for HFAC PDS. It makes full use of the conversion of series and parallel connections of one voltage source and two capacitors to realize nine output levels, thus lower THD can be obtained without HFM methods. The voltage stress on power devices is relatively relieved, which has broadened its range of applications as well. Moreover, the proposed nine-level inverter is equipped with the inherent self-voltage balancing ability, thus the modulation algorithm gets simplified. The circuit structure, modulation method, capacitor calculation, loss analysis, and performance comparisons are presented in this paper, and all the superior performances of the proposed nine-level inverter are verified by simulation and experimental prototypes with rated output power of 200 W. Three-phase voltage-source inverters typically feature a significant amount of dc energy storage to maintain a stiff dc bus. In these cases, the dc-link capacitor is sized to store enough energy to maintain several tens of cycles of ac output at the rated power. In this paper, we propose to reduce the size of the dc-link capacitor dramatically to store enough energy to provide just one high-frequency switching cycle of the ac output power. The dc bus is no longer stiff, and hence, classical sinusoidal pulse-width modulation cannot be used. However, the stored energy modulation (SEM) proposed herein synthesizes high-quality sinusoidal output voltage waveforms, even with such tiny dc-link capacitors. In this paper, a new topology for half-bridge Z-source inverter is proposed. The proposed topology has only one impedance network. Unlike to the conventional half-bridge inverter, the proposed topology can provide zero voltage level at the output. It also increases output voltage level and stabilizes it in the desired value. Capacitor voltage stress in the proposed topology is low, and, therefore, nominal voltage of capacitor and cost decreases. In this paper, the steady-state analysis of the proposed inverter in two new operations which are named synchronous operation of diodes and asynchronous operation of diodes is conducted based on mathematics calculations. A method to obtain high-voltage gains by cascading the Z-network and combining middle inductors is presented that leads to cost, size, and weight reduction. Zero-common-mode-voltage (CMV) operation of multilevel inverters results in reduced dc-bus utilization and reduced linear modulation range. In this paper, a method to increase the linear modulation range for zero-CMV operation without increasing the dc-bus voltage using a cascaded multilevel inverter with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the peak fundamental output voltage can be increased from 0.499 to 0.637  \textV\text{dc} with zero CMV inside the linear modulation range. Also, various pulse width modulation (PWM) switching sequences are analyzed in this paper, and the PWM sequence that gives minimum current ripple is used for the zero-CMV operation of the inverter. The inverter topology with single dc supply is realized by cascading a two-level inverter with two floating-capacitor-fed full-bridge modules. The paper proposes a method of active switching harmonics current reduction in the dc-link capacitor of a two-level, three-phase, back-to-back converter. Based on the derived analytical solution for switching harmonic currents in the dc-link, it is shown that by specific control over the pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) carriers’ phase angles, the targeted harmonics of the rectifier and the inverter can be synchronized in phase such that their cancellation occurs in the dc-link capacitor. This synchronization is provided by harmonic phase feedback control. A three-step procedure to implement the method is detailed in the paper. Aimed at the problem that the auxiliary commutation circuit (ACC) of auxiliary resonant commutated pole (ARCP) inverters has a high loss in commutation processes, this paper presents a novel modulation strategy with shunt dead time based on a double ARCP (DARCP) inverter. In comparison with the original modulation strategy, this modulation strategy cannot only achieve soft switching for all switches, but also avoid the superposition of resonance current and load current at commutation moments in double ACCs (DACCs) and make the maximum current through DACCs approximately equal to load current in commutation processes. So, the circulating current loss in DACCs and the current stress of auxiliary switches can be effectively reduced. According to the equivalent circuits in different operation modes under the novel modulation strategy, this paper analyzes the operation principle, soft-switching implementation condition, and optimal parameter design procedure of the DARCP inverter. Finally, a 10-kW–16-kHz DARCP inverter prototype with insulated gate bipolar transistor-based switches is built. This paper presents a model predictive control technique applied to a dual-active bridge inverter where one of the bridges is floating. The proposed floating bridge topology eliminates the need for isolation transformer in a dual inverter system and therefore reduces the size, weight, and losses in the system. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, the floating inverter dc-link capacitor is charged to the half of the main dc-link voltage. A finite-set model predictive control technique is used to control the load current of the converter as well as the floating capacitor voltage. Model predictive control does not require any switching sequence design or complex switching time calculations as used for space vector modulation; thus, the technique has some advantages in this application. This paper presents a three-phase open-end winding induction motor drive. The drive consists of a three-phase induction machine with open stator phase windings and dual-bridge inverter supplied from a single dc voltage source. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, a floating capacitor bank is used for the second of the dual bridges. The capacitor voltage is regulated using redundant switching states at half of the main dc-link voltage. This particular voltage ratio (2:1) is used to create a multilevel output voltage waveform with three levels. A modified modulation scheme is used to improve the waveform quality of this dual inverter. This paper also compares the losses in the dual-inverter system in contrast with a single-sided three-level neutral point clamped converter. Pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters have been widely applied for power processing, and they are typically the stems of other types of converters, such as quasi-resonant, Z-source, and switched-inductor hybrid converters. Development of PWM converters has been spanning over a century, starting from the buck converter. The well-known PWM converters include buck, boost, buck–boost, Ćuk, single ended primary inductive converter (SEPIC), zeta, Z-source, quasi-Z source, etc. Many attempts have been proposed to develop these converters based mostly on canonical cell concepts and by introducing extra LC filters to the cells. This paper presents an enhancement to the layer and graft schemes by introducing the ideas of dc voltage/current offsetting, capacitor/inductor component splitting, diode grafting, and inverse operation of PWM converters. The PWM converters, which can be operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), therefore can be synthesized systematically according to decoded transfer gains. Decoding and synthesizing PWM converters uniquely bridge transfer gains to converter topologies and provide readers a comprehensive understanding of PWM-converter evolution from the original converter, the buck converter. Additionally, in this paper, the Ćuk, SEPIC, and zeta converters all with the same transfer gain of $D/(1 - D)$ are proved to be equivalent to the buck–boost converter with an extra LC filter. For further illustrating the proposed approaches, various types of Z-source converters, switched-capacitor/switched-inductor hybrid converters, and a single-stage interleaved converter are reviewed, and new PWM converters are developed. This paper introduces a three-phase grid-connected inverter for commercial-scale photovoltaic systems. The circuit topology combines an ac-inductor-less active bridge with a parallel-connected pulsewidth modulation inverter acting as an instantaneous reactive power compensator. The active bridge, called a 120° conduction inverter, operates at a switching frequency equal to the grid frequency and outputs a 120° rectangular current, while the compensator eliminates the harmonic currents included in the rectangular current. The main advantage of this strategy is the reduction in size of the required ac inductor by a factor of 4, as well as the reduction of power losses in the switching devices. The theoretical analysis clearly shows that the compensator can synthesize a sinusoidal output current by controlling only instantaneous reactive power, thus eliminating the need for electrolytic capacitors. A 5-kW experimental setup validates the operating principle and the control method of the proposed inverter and exhibits an inverter efficiency as high as 99.2% with Si superjunction mosfets. This paper proposes a dual-function dynamic voltage restorer (DFDVR) with fault current-limiting capability. The new topology can operate under different modes: the short-circuit fault current-limiting mode and the compensation mode for voltage fluctuation. Different functions of the DFDVR are achieved by controlling a brake chopper circuit and antiparallel thyristors. During fault conditions, the antiparallel thyristors are deactivated to protect the dc-side capacitor, and the duration of the on- and off-periods of the semiconductor switch in the brake chopper circuit is controlled to adjust fault current amplitudes. During voltage sags, the antiparallel thyristors are activated, and the brake chopper circuit is turned off by controlling the gate turn-off thyristor in the brake chopper circuit, thus making the DFDVR similar to a conventional DVR. The control scheme and optimal parameter selection of the DFDVR are provided. The design methodology of the DFDVR was verified through simulations performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. In this paper, a new multi-input multi-output (MIMO) dc–dc converter with high step-up capability is proposed for wide power ranges. Also, in order to increase each output voltage, diode–capacitor voltage multiplier (VM) stages are utilized in the proposed converter. The number of input stages, output stages, and VM stages are arbitrary and dependent on design conditions. At first, the general structure of proposed MIMO converter is presented. Then, in order to explain the converter operation, we walk through the design of a 1-kW four-input two-output example, including loss and efficiency calculations. This paper presents a new reconfiguration module for asymmetrical multilevel inverters in which the capacitors are used as the dc links to create the levels for staircase waveforms. This configuration of the multilevel converter makes a reduction in dc sources. On the other hand, it is possible to generate 13 levels with lower dc sources. The proposed module of the multilevel inverter generates 13 levels with two unequal dc sources (2VDC and 1VDC). It also involves two chargeable capacitors and 14 semiconductor switches. The capacitors are self-charging without any extra circuit. The lower number of components makes it desirable to be used in wide range of applications. The module is schematized as two back-to-back T-type inverters and some other switches around it. Also, it can be connected as a cascade modular which leads to a modular topology with more voltage levels at higher voltages. The proposed module makes the inherent creation of the negative voltage levels without any additional circuit (such as H-bridge circuit). Nearest level control switching modulation scheme is applied to achieve high-quality sinusoidal output voltage. Simulations are executed in MATLAB/Simulink and a prototype is implemented in the power electronics laboratory in which the simulation and experimental results show a good performance. This paper introduces a new configuration of bidirectional multilevel converter in electric vehicle (EV) applications. It has multilevel dc–dc converter with a dc link capacitor voltage balance feature. The multilevel dc–dc converter operates in a bidirectional manner, which is a fundamental requirement in EVs. Compared to the conventional configurations, the proposed one only implements two extra power switches and a capacitor to balance the voltage of the T-type multilevel inverter (MLI) capacitor over a complete drive cycle or at fault conditions. Therefore, no extra isolated sensor, control loops, and/or special switching pattern are required. Moreover, the proposed configuration due to the high-frequency cycle-by-cycle voltage balance between ${C_N}$ and ${C_P}$ , the bulky electrolytic capacitors used in T-type MLI, are replaced with more reliable longer life film capacitors. This will result in a size and weight reduction of the converter by 20%. This allows more real estate for the EV battery in the chassis’ space envelope to increase its capacity. Due to the pulsating power at the inverter output terminals, the passive storage elements of the boost stage of the current-fed switched inverter (CFSI) contain a power frequency harmonic component (100 Hz), apart from dc and switching frequency components. In prior designs, the second harmonic component is suppressed by increasing the size of the input filter inductor and capacitor or by using additional circuits. This paper presents a complete characterization of a control-based approach to suppress the power frequency harmonic component in the input inductor current of a CFSI. It also presents a comprehensive characterization of the harmonic power redistribution. Using the proposed approach, it is demonstrated that the inductor value of a CFSI is reduced by 61% for the same peak-to-peak ripple. This leads to an improvement in the conversion ratio, efficiency, and power density of the overall converter. This paper explores a power-conversion system for single-phase transformerless ac module application. A nonisolated high-gain dc–dc stage is coupled with a doubly grounded dynamic dc-link inverter to implement the microinverter topology. The front-end boost stage steps up the single-module voltage to a higher dc voltage, typically to 200 or 400 V as required for the following inverter stage. It is a hybrid of an interleaved boost and switched capacitor concept capable of achieving high gain while simultaneously maintaining reduced voltage and current stress, and thus lowering switching and conduction loss for most of the switches. By directly connecting the grid neutral to the photovoltaic (PV) negative, the doubly grounded voltage swing inverter has the advantage of zero capacitive-coupled common-mode ground currents, critical for transformerless PV inverters. The two dc links of the inverter stage share the double-line frequency power decoupling with a combination of higher value of mean voltage and relatively large 120-Hz ripple component–the dynamic dc-link approach. Through an optimization algorithm, the decoupling capacitance is minimized enabling an all-film capacitor implementation while satisfying the converter's operating constraints over a wide range of power factors. In this paper, a fixed switching frequency model predictive current controller is designed and implemented on a sensorless five-level packed U-cell (PUC5) inverter interfacing the utility. The predictive control methodology is based on a voltage vector generation technique for the cost function optimization by nullifying its derivative. The aim of the controller is to allow a fixed-frequency operation with no iterations while operating as a utility line current regulator. A pulsewidth modulator based on employing PUC5 redundant switching states fixes the PUC5 auxiliary dc bus capacitor voltage to its desired level with no necessity of a regulator; the overall technique reduces system complexity with less sensors and no loops in the predictive algorithm making it suitable for industrial applications. Multilevel inverters are now-a-days being applied in electric vehicles (EV). Considering the dynamic operating conditions of an EV propelled by an induction motor, this paper proposes a flexible discontinuous modulation strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter that can shift modulation pattern seamlessly from sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) to discontinuous PWM (DPWM). The modulation scheme is generalized at each degree of discontinuity to ensure minimum switching losses for variable load power factors. Additionally, a hybrid voltage balancing strategy, which comprises two sets of compensating offset signals with complementary features, has been introduced to mitigate voltage deviation problem at neutral point of the inverter. The unique feature of the proposed hybrid balancing approach is that it generates uniform compensating neutral current regardless of the level of discontinuity. This results in identical and predictable voltage balancing dynamics for the entire modulation transition covering SPWM and DPWM. It has been shown that the proposed hybrid balancing strategy does not lose its unbalance compensation strength even during transition from one modulation pattern to another. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for wide variations in operating conditions is studied through extensive simulation, and validated in experimentation using a prototype NPC inverter with induction motor loads. Wireless power transfer with a self-tuning LCC inverter using pulsewidth modulation (PWM) controlled switched capacitor is proposed in this paper in order to compensate for the variations of Tx inductance. Usually, receivers contain magnetic and conductive materials for shielding and mechanical support. The inductance of the Tx coil is sensitive to the variation of Tx–Rx alignment because the interaction between the Tx coil and the Rx magnetic–conductive materials is also varied. It is shown that the detuning of the Tx inductance value exacerbates the losses in the LCC inverter. In the proposed method, the PWM duty ratio of a single capacitor adjusts the effective output impedance of the LCC inverter. The PWM feedback loop is designed such that the power factor and the real-part impedance of the LCC inverter are maximized. The PWM switch is turned on at zero voltage and turned off with low dv/dt, minimizing switching losses. Such a soft-switching tunable capacitor can handle higher power compared to the traditional hard-switching capacitor, p-n junction capacitor, or an analog IC capacitor. Another advantage of the proposed technique is the continuity in achievable capacitance value using only one capacitor. The feedback can be fully implemented by analog components, obviating the necessity of digital samplings, ADC/DACs, and microcontrollers. Soft-switching inverters can achieve high efficiencies and low switchdv/dtanddi/dt, but often impose additional stress on the switches due to their resonant behavior. Multicell converters, on the other hand, can process high voltages by arranging the switches to share the stress. This paper proposes a buck–boost multicell soft-switching inverter with inherent cell voltage balancing. Both the current and voltage stresses are shared by the cells. Soft-switching conditions are achieved for all switching transitions without any need for auxiliary circuitry or clamps. A multiple-winding transformer transfers energy between the terminals and provides galvanic isolation. There is increasing interest in the use of transformer-less systems for grid-connected photovoltaic applications. Compared to transformer-coupled solutions, transformer-less systems offer a typical efficiency increase of 1–2%, reduced system size and weight, and a reduction in cost. However, the removal of the transformer has technical implications. In addition to the loss of galvanic isolation, dc current injection into the grid is a potential risk. While desirable, complete mitigation of dc current injection via convention current control methods is known to be particularly challenging. For this reason, this paper proposes an active dc suppression method, in which the dc current injection is accurately determined by extracting the line-frequency component from inverter dc-link current measurements, and then, mitigated with an active closed-loop controller. A 1-φ hybrid nine-level inverter (H9LI) topology has been proposed in this paper. The proposed H9LI topology uses a simple phase disposition pulsewidth modulation strategy to generate nine-voltage levels in the output. The main advantage of this topology is that it has a low switch count (ten switches) compared to the existing nine-level inverter topologies. To regulate the voltage across auxiliary capacitor, two innovative control techniques are proposed, which are integrated with the inverter modulation technique itself. Hence, it does not require any extra voltage balancing circuits to maintain the voltage across the auxiliary capacitor and input dc capacitors. A major advantage of these control techniques is that they eliminate the sensing of the coupled inductor current. Another significant advantage of H9LI is that loss distribution among all the power switches is more uniform compared to existing nine-level inverters. Due to low part count and absence of extra voltage balancing circuits, the H9LI achieves higher efficiency (η ≍ 94.5%) and lower cost. Furthermore, the requirement of filter size reduces due to the presence of coupled inductor in H9LI. In this paper, capacitor current sensorless control by using an observer is applied in a seamless transfer single-phase inverter. The proposed control system is a multiloop control system. The control loop is composed of a capacitor voltage outer control loop and capacitor current inner control loop for stand-alone mode. For on-grid mode, the grid current outer loop controller is combined with the stand-alone control structure to form a simple controller structure for mode switching. The capacitor current feedback signal is calculated using the observer in the discrete-time domain and thus sensors are not required. Use of the proposed observer for the inverter with capacitor current control has many advantages, such as sensorless capacitor current calculation, one-sample-ahead data prediction for sampling delay compensation, and an average capacitor current without ripple components. Verification of the theoretical analysis is presented through simulation and experiment. A 5-kW single-phase inverter prototype combined with a Li-ion battery is set up with a digital controller using a TI TMS320F28377D microcontroller unit to confirm the feasibility of the system. This paper proposed a novel family of pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategies for single-phase quasi-switched boost inverter (qSBI). By combining shoot-through (ST) mode in the inverter's switches and the turning-on state of an additional switch, the qSBI produced a high voltage gain without adding any passive components. Compared to the conventional PWM strategy for the same input and output voltage gain, the introduced PWM strategies for qSBI could reduce voltage stress across semiconductors and capacitor with the following additional merits: having smaller high-frequency inductor current and capacitor voltage ripples, using high modulation index with low ST duty cycle, and having higher efficiency. Circuit analysis, operating theories, and simulation results of the single-phase qSBI with the introduced PWM5 strategy are shown. A 500-W laboratory prototype was constructed and the effectiveness of the introduced PWM strategy was validated. Cascaded multilevel inverter (CMI) is one of the most popular multilevel inverter topologies. This topology is synthesized with some series-connected identical H-bridge cells. CMI requires several isolated dc sources which brings about some difficulties when dealing with this type of inverter. This paper addresses the problem by proposing a switched-capacitor (SC)-based CMI. The proposed topology, which is referred to as switched-capacitor single-source CMI (SCSS-CMI), makes use of some capacitors instead of the dc sources. Hence, it requires only one dc source to charge the employed capacitors. Usually, the capacitor charging process in a SC cell is companied by some current spikes which extremely harm the charging switch and the capacitor. The capacitors in SCSS-CMI are charged through a simple auxiliary circuit which eradicates the mentioned current spikes and provides zero-current switching condition for the charging switch. A discontinuous pulsewidth modulation (DPWM) strategy for three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) traction inverter drive for electric vehicles (EVs) with minimum switching loss for the full power factor (PF) range is developed and presented in this paper. Considering the dynamic loading conditions in an EV propelled by an induction motor (IM), the discontinuous modulation strategy is generalized to obtain minimum switching loss for a wide variations in load PF and modulation depth. The dynamic operating conditions in EV may render frequent unbalances in dc-link capacitor voltages in NPC inverter. It is demonstrated that the addition of an appropriate offset signal with the reference discontinuous signals generates compensating neutral current in the right direction, which can be used to mitigate existing unbalance in two dc-link capacitor voltages. Minimum switching loss at variable PF is attained by positioning the nonswitching clamped regions of the reference auxiliary signals according to the load PF. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme for a wide range of torque/speed variations is studied through simulation by developing a MATLAB/SIMULINK model of an IM traction inverter drive with field-oriented control strategy for closed loop control.
