Magnetically coupled impedance-source (MCIS) networks are recently introduced impedance networks intended for various high-boost applications. It employs coupled magnetic in the circuit to achieve higher voltage gain. Various MCIS networks have been proposed in the literature for myriad applications; however, due to effective role of system modeling in the closed-loop controller design, this paper is allocated to small-signal modeling and analysis of MCIS converters. The modeling is performed by means of the circuit averaging and averaged switch technique. A generalized small-signal derivation is demonstrated for pulse width modulation (PWM) MCIS converters and it is shown that the derived transfer functions can simply be applied to Y-source, Γ-source, and T-source impedance networks. Various transfer functions for capacitor voltage, output voltage, magnetizing current, input and output impedance are derived and have been validated through frequency and dynamic responses of computer simulation results. In addition, a comprehensive analysis has been done for all mentioned PWM MCIS converters regarding their circuit parameters. Furthermore, the effect of considering the equivalent series resistances of capacitor and inductor on the stability margin of MCIS converters is revealed in this paper. In several electrical dc–ac power conversions, the ac output voltage is higher than the input voltage. If a voltage-source inverter (VSI) is used, then an additional dc–dc boosting stage is required to overcome the step-down VSI limitations. Recently, several impedance source converters are gaining higher attentions [1], [2], as they are able to provide buck-boost capability in a single conversion stage. This paper proposes the merging of the boost stage and the VSI stage in a single stage dc–ac power conversion, denoted as split-source inverter (SSI). The proposed topology requires the same number of active switches of the VSI, three additional diodes, and the same eight states of a conventional space-vector modulation. It also shows some merits compared to Z-source inverters, especially in terms of reduced switch voltage stress for voltage gains higher than 1.15. This paper presents the analysis of the SSI and compares different modulation schemes. Moreover, it presents a modified modulation scheme to eliminate the low frequency ripple in the input current and the voltage across the inverter bridge. Multiphase variable-speed drives and generation systems (systems with more than three phases) have become one of the mainstream research areas during the last decade. The main driving forces are the specific applications, predominantly related to the green agenda, such as electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EVs), locomotive traction, ship propulsion, “more-electric” aircraft, remote offshore wind farms for electric energy generation, and general high-power industrial applications. As a result, produced body of significant work is substantial, making it impossible to review all the major developments in a single paper. This paper therefore surveys the recent progress in two specific areas associated with multiphase systems, namely power electronic supply control and innovative ways of using the additional degrees of freedom in multiphase machines for various nontraditional purposes. This paper discusses the use of a cascaded multilevel converter for flexible power conditioning in smart-grid applications. The main feature of the proposed scheme is the use of independent dc links with reduced voltages, which makes such a topology an ideal candidate for medium- and high-power applications with increased reliability. The developed control strategy regulates independent dc-link voltages in each H-bridge cell, and allows the selective and flexible compensation of disturbing currents under a variety of voltage conditions without requiring any reference frame transformation. The selective control strategies are based on the decompositions proposed in the conservative power theory, which result in several current-related terms associated with specific load characteristics. These current components are independent of each other and may be used to define different compensation strategies, which can be selective in minimizing particular effects of disturbing loads. In order to increase the output voltage levels and reduce the isolated dc sources, a symmetrical hybrid nine-level inverter for high-speed motor drive applications is presented in this paper. Each phase of this inverter is composed of a five-level dc/dc converter cell and an H-bridge cell. The dc/dc converter is operated at high frequency with low-voltage devices and the H-bridge is operated at fundamental frequency with high-voltage devices. The three phases are connected to a common dc-link and each drives an isolated winding of an open-winding motor. The operating principles and modulation method are introduced. A detailed analysis of the average currents through the flying capacitor and neutral point of the dc-link is presented and a capacitor voltage balancing method based on phase-shifted pulse-width modulation is proposed. A new zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) reduction method for multimodule voltage source inverters (MVSIs) consisting of P three-phase inverters that are connected in parallel is proposed in this paper. Four-switch inverter modules are used instead of the conventional six-switch modules to reduce the cost. In this paper, the effectiveness of the proposed ZSCC reduction method is studied using selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation. The proposed ZSCC reduction method can remove about P times the number of harmonics using the same switching frequency as compared to more conventional methods, as explained later in this paper. Distributed energy resources (DERs) are expected to provide ancillary functions including reactive power generation and harmonics compensation. Meanwhile, multilevel inverters and two-level converters with optimal pulsewidth modulation (OPWM) will be commonly used for DERs at high power levels. The challenge is to realize harmonic compensation with limited switching angles. This paper presents an online solution to realize the selective harmonics compensation (SHC), and power generation with DERs. For harmonics compensation, the selective harmonic components in the load current are detected. Then, the harmonic voltages are provided with DERs to cancel out these detected components. Since the power converter is requested to realize both harmonics filtering and power generation, limitations on harmonics compensation at the given power are discussed. Compensation of nonlinear effects generated by dead-time and semiconductors voltage drop has been widely studied in the literature about two-level converters. This paper takes a closer look at those analyses for multilevel converters, specifically for a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter modulated with phase-shifted pulse width modulation. The interaction between the cells is analyzed for a generic $n$ -cell converter, from which a general expression for the distortion generated by the nonlinearities has been obtained. Based on this expression, a compensation signal for the overall converter is calculated on each sample time, which is a fraction of the triangular carrier used to modulate each cell, thus significantly improving the quality of the output voltage signals. Two new configurations of static ground power unit based on 5L active neutral point clamped (ANPC) and novel modular 9L-ANPC converter are proposed. First, a new level shifted phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation (LS-PSC-PWM) switching method for the 5L-ANPC converter is defined. By utilizing the proposed method, total harmonic distortion of output voltage is reduced in comparison with traditional PSC-PWM switching method. Then, a novel modular 9L-ANPC multilevel converter and its suggested modulation method is proposed in this paper. In comparison with traditional 9L-ANPC converter, the main advantages of proposed modular 9L-ANPC converter are halving the applied voltages on flying capacitors (FC), reduced number of FCs, and self-balancing of FCs, which is provided by suggested switching method. This results in reduction of the size and cost of converter, and makes it more feasible and reliable. Furthermore, inductance reduction of output LC filter enhances static ground power unit dynamic performances. Variable-speed multiphase (more than three phases) drive systems are seen as serious contenders to the existing three-phase drives due to their distinct advantages. Supply to the multiphase drives is invariably given from a voltage source inverter. However, this paper proposes an alternative solution for supplying multiphase drive system using a direct ac–ac converter called a matrix converter. This paper proposes the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) algorithm for the matrix converter topology with three-phase grid input and five-phase variable-voltage and variable-frequency output. The PWM control technique developed and presented in this paper is based on space vector approach. This paper presents the complete space vector model of the three-to-five-phase matrix converter topology. The space vector model yield 2^15 total switching combinations which reduce to 243 states considering the imposed constraints, out of which 240 are active and 3 are zero vectors. However, for space vector PWM (SVPWM) implementation, only 90 active and 3 zero vectors can be used. The SVPWM algorithm is presented in this paper. This paper proposes a unified PWM method for matrix converters so as to establish a common platform which can generate various types of PWM methods in real time by adjusting the free parameters in the modulation algorithm. As a foundation for unification, the general form of the modulation functions for matrix converters is derived using geometric transformation approach. All eligible direct modulation matrices are shown to be of indirect form and are expressed in terms of instantaneous phase quantities. This paper also presents a new viewpoint to consider a matrix converter as a generalized three-level inverter and to apply the double-carrier-based dipolar modulation technique of the three-level inverter to the matrix converter. This paper proposes three dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) topologies. Such configurations are able to compensate voltage sags/swells in three-phase four-wire (3P4W) systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions. The proposed systems use two independent dc links. Proposed configurations present advantages in terms of switch blocking voltages and consequently lower dc-link voltage rating. The complete control system, including the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique, is developed, and comparisons between the proposed configurations and a conventional one are performed. This paper proposes an indirect matrix converter (IMC) topology to supply a five-phase load directly from three-phase ac power sources without bulky electrolytic capacitors and explains its operating principle. Using the emerging topology, which combines the five-leg inverter into the rectifier stage of the conventional IMC, the three-to-five-phase IMC topology reduces the number of power switches and results in a simpler commutation compared with the conventional three-to-five-phase direct matrix converter. In addition, a simple approach to realize the carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (CBPWM) method for a three-to-five-phase IMC is presented, and the proposed CBPWM method is analyzed based on the space-vector approach. As a result, the IMC with the proposed CBPWM method can be more easily implemented compared with IMCs with the space-vector PWM method. A three-to-five-phase IMC control platform is realized by coordinating a TMS320F28335 DSP (Texas Instruments) with an EPM7128SLC84-15 field-programmable gate array (Altera). This paper proposes a three-phase isolated bidirectional ac/dc converter. The converter achieves buck–boost ac/dc bidirectional conversion, sinusoidal ac current, and high-frequency electrical isolation with single-stage structure. The traditional SVPWM algorithm should be modified to keep the voltage–second balance of the transformer. The circuit derivation, operation principles, and SVPWM algorithm are presented specifically. The solution for shoot-through problem is proposed, which does not need extra dead time. To verify the theoretical analysis, the proposed converter was simulated by MATLAB/SIMULINK and a 3 kW prototype was built in the lab. In electric vehicle (EV) energy storage systems, a large number of battery cells are usually connected in series to enhance the output voltage for motor driving. The difference in electrochemical characters will cause state-of-charge (SOC) and terminal voltage imbalance between different cells. In this paper, a hybrid cascaded multilevel converter which involves both battery energy management and motor drives is proposed for EV. In the proposed topology, each battery cell can be controlled to be connected into the circuit or to be bypassed by a half-bridge converter. All half-bridges are cascaded to output a staircase shape dc voltage. Then, an H-bridge converter is used to change the direction of the dc bus voltages to make up ac voltages. The outputs of the converter are multilevel voltages with less harmonics and lower dv/dt, which is helpful to improve the performance of the motor drives. By separate control according to the SOC of each cell, the energy utilization ratio of the batteries can be improved. The imbalance of terminal voltage and SOC can also be avoided, fault-tolerant can be easily realized by modular cascaded circuit, so the life of the battery stack will be extended. This paper presents a new pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy, called extended double carrier PWM, for a two-level voltage source inverter aiming at reducing the RMS current flowing through dc link filtering capacitors on embedded systems over a large modulation index range and for high-power factor loads (cos φ ≥ 0.8). Instead of utilizing two adjacent active vectors at each switching period as in classic PWM strategies, this new strategy utilizes two nonadjacent active vectors in the case of low-modulation index or three consecutive active vectors in the case of high-modulation index. Analytical calculations show that this new strategy is particularly effective in terms of reducing filtering capacitor rms current for high-power factor compared to space vector PWM which is used as a reference strategy. Cascaded H-bridge multilevel power electronic converters generally require several dc sources. An alternative option is to replace all the separate dc sources feeding the H-bridge cells with capacitors, leaving only one H-bridge cell with a real dc voltage source. This will yield a cost-effective converter. However, the required capacitor voltage balancing is challenging. In this paper, using the phase-shift modulation approach, a new control method for cascaded H-bridge multilevel converters fed with only one independent dc source is presented. The proposed method has a wide voltage regulation range for the replacement capacitors in the H-bridge cells. Experimental and simulation results support the proposed control method. Hybrid cascade multilevel inverters combine semiconductor devices of different voltage ratings and technologies, which theoretically allow high efficiency to be achieved. The bottlenecks of these topologies are, however, the need for isolated supplies for the cells and the lack of modularity. This paper focuses on the design and control of high-resolution, high-efficiency multilevel inverters with simplified dc power supplies. It introduces several rules for systematically designing the dc voltages of the cells, for which all unsupplied capacitor voltages can be regulated. Six classes of inverters are obtained covering single- and three-phase, staircase and pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) inverters. New configurations of hybrid cascade multilevel inverters are obtained for each class. A double modulation strategy with two different frequencies is proposed that allows switching losses of PWM inverters to be reduced. Decoupled mechanisms are proposed for the total and internal energy balances. It is shown how to make the design robust by taking into account conversion losses and large dc-voltage imbalances in the design and control. An analysis of the maximum voltage utilization and efficiency of the resulting configurations is carried out. The five-level active neutral-point (NP)-clamped (ANPC) converter is a newly emerging topology which can overcome the drawbacks of traditional NP-clamped and flying-capacitor multilevel converters. This paper presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the NP potential balancing issue and demonstrates that the NP potential can be naturally balanced under ideal and steady conditions. An NP potential balancing method based on zero-sequence voltage injection is presented. By calculating the average NP currents of all key zero-sequence voltages, the most appropriate zero-sequence voltage is selected to generate the demanded NP current, which can also limit the switching frequency of the series-connected insulated-gate bipolar transistors to the fundamental frequency. The advancement in power electronics has made the use of any number of phases in ac machines possible since with the inverter, any number of phase voltages can be realized as long as the corresponding inverter exists. To supply multiphase drives requires multiphase voltage source inverters (VSIs) whose output voltages depend very much on the methods of generating the pulses to turn on and turn off the inverter devices appropriately. This paper presents an analytical technique for the determination of the expressions for the modulation signals used in the carrier-based sinusoidal and generalized discontinuous pulse width modulation schemes for two-level, five-phase voltage source converters. These expressions can be used for both balanced and unbalanced phase voltages generated by any two-level multiphase inverter, in generating the required reference signals appropriately. An example of a five-phase VSI is presented to illustrate the strategy. This paper extends the Z-source concept to matrix converters and explores a family of Z-source matrix converters. Their principles and characteristics are analyzed, and a simplified voltage-fed Z-source matrix converter is used as an example to demonstrate its operation, voltage gain versus modulation index, PWM method, boost control, and implementation of the control. Both simulation and experimental results verify operation of the proposed Z-source matrix converter, analytical results, and control method. The Z-source converters can achieve buck and boost operation with reduced number of switches needed, therefore achieving low cost, high efficiency, and reliability, compared to the traditional matrix converters. Common-mode voltage (CMV) is responsible for overvoltage stress to the winding insulation and bearing damage of an ac motor. High dv/dt of CMV raises leakage currents, which can cause serious problems such as motor damage and electromagnetic noise to the equipment installed near the converter. This paper proposes two modulation strategies for indirect matrix converters that substantially eliminate CMV. The first method is developed by using the suitable couple of nonzero space vectors instead of zero space vectors in the inverter stage. The maximum voltage transfer ratio of this method is unaffected and remains 0.866. The second one, which is useful for low-voltage operation, is approached by choosing the medium and the lowest positive line-to-line input voltages in the rectifier stage to generate the dc-link voltage and by placing suitable zero space vectors in the inverter stage. In the second method, the maximum voltage transfer ratio is 0.5. Both methods can mitigate the peak value to 42%. In addition, while the first method provides the same performance to the conventional method, the second method can reduce significantly the harmonic components of line-to-line output voltage. This paper presents first an overview of the well-known voltage and current dc-link converter topologies used to implement a three-phase PWM ac–ac converter system. Starting from the voltage source inverter and the current source rectifier, the basics of space vector modulation are summarized. Based on that, the topology of the indirect matrix converter (IMC) and its modulation are gradually developed from a voltage dc-link back-to-back converter by omitting the dc-link capacitor. In the next step, the topology of the conventional (direct) matrix converter (CMC) is introduced, and the relationship between the IMC and the CMCs is discussed in a figurative manner by investigating the switching states. Subsequently, three-phase ac–ac buck-type chopper circuits are considered as a special case of matrix converters (MCs), and a summary of extended MC topologies is provided, including three-level and hybrid MCs.
