Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-enhanced wireless communication is one of the critical technologies of the sixth generation mobile communication, which has recently emerged as an innovative solution to the realization of intelligent transportation. It can meet the increasing demand for high-speed railway (HSR) communications services. In this paper, we consider a train-ground TDD wireless mobile communication paradigm to deploy two IRSs on the roadside and the train roof to assist the wireless transmission for the HSR communication system. To achieve the more significant performance gain, in the uplink transmission phase, we propose the practical channel estimation framework of the MIMO system aided by double IRSs to acquire reliable channel state information (CSI) of each channel. To facilitate the processing of the three-dimension tensor, we leverage the trilinearity of the parallel factor decomposition to decompose the received signal into a two-dimensional matrix. The Doppler frequency offset compensating scheme and channel tracking scheme based on Kalman-Filter are proposed to further decrease the pilot overheads. Then, in the downlink phase, a block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed to handle the data rate maximization problem of double IRSs communication system with the estimated CSI. We reformulate the original problem and decouple the double IRSs phase optimization problem into two single IRS phase optimization non-convex problems under the unit-modulus constraint. The Majorization-Minimization (MM) algorithm is proposed to approximate the optimal solution of the two optimization subproblems. Due to their ability to create favorable line-of-sight (LoS) propagation environments, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are regarded as promising enablers for future millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless communication. In this paper, we investigate channel estimation for IRS-assisted mm-wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems. By leveraging the sparsity of mm-wave channels in the angular domain, we formulate the channel estimation problem as an $\ell _{1}$ -norm regularized optimization problem with fixed-rank constraints. To tackle the non-convexity of the formulated problem, an efficient algorithm is proposed by capitalizing on alternating minimization and manifold optimization (MO), which yields a locally optimal solution. To further reduce the computational complexity of the estimation algorithm, we propose a compressive sensing- (CS-) based channel estimation approach. In particular, a three-stage estimation protocol is put forward where the subproblem in each stage can be solved via low-complexity CS methods. Furthermore, based on the acquired channel state information (CSI) of the cascaded channel, we design a passive beamforming algorithm for maximization of the spectral efficiency. Simulation results reveal that the proposed MO-based estimation (MO-EST) and beamforming algorithms significantly outperform two benchmark schemes while the CS-based estimation (CS-EST) algorithm strikes a balance between performance and complexity. Cloud-based cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) technology, which exploits a large number of distributed antennas to cooperatively serve multiple users, constitutes an appealing technique for B5G/6G wireless communications. However, the distributed nature of cloud-based CFmMIMO imposes great challenges in analyzing the error probability bounds, and very few efforts have so far been paid to optimize the detector design. In this paper, we try to add a stroke to this blank by analyzing the symbol error rate (SER) and design near-optimal detection algorithms. Specifically, considering non-identical large-scale coefficients and channel estimation errors, we first leverage the pairwise error probability to derive an asymptotic SER bound for uplink cloud-based CFmMIMO systems, which is verified by simulation results. Furthermore, motivated by the concepts of successive interference cancellation (SIC) and error correction mechanism (ECM), we design two distinct types of near-optimal detectors for cloud-based CFmMIMO systems and analyze their complexity and convergence performance. Finally, extensive simulation results show that our proposed SIC and ECM based detectors outperform conventional matched filtering (MF) and minimum mean squred error (MMSE) counterparts. In particular, the MMSE-SIC and MMSE-ECM detectors approach the derived asymptotic bound, and the MF-ECM detector strikes a balance between the SER and complexity in ultra CFmMIMO scenarios. The use of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology has enabled increased efficiency and capacity of wireless communication systems. When the downlink channel to user terminals (UTs) is known at the base station (BS), the BS can precode transmission to simplify detection at the UTs. In frequency division duplexed (FDD) systems, obtaining CSI at the transmitter to fully exploit the advantages of massive MIMO is complicated, since the number of channel coefficients to be trained and fed back from the UT is very large. This is exacerbated in the case where the channel is time varying, where frequent retraining and feedback is required. However, if the channel coefficients are spatially correlated, the amount of feedback required can be reduced significantly. In this paper, we consider the case where the channel coefficients from the BS to the UTs are spatially correlated, and show that efficient allocation of training power based on eigenvalues of the channel correlation matrix significantly boosts achievable rates. Further, we show that using Kalman filters to track the evolving channel coefficients reduces the need to retrain channels, and the reduced training requirement translates to higher data rates. Channel estimation is challenging for the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless communications. Since the number of coefficients of the cascaded channel among the base station (BS), the RIS, and the user equipment (UE), is the product of the number of BS antennas, the number of RIS elements, and the number of UEs, the pilot overhead can be prohibitively high. In this paper, we propose a two-timescale channel estimation framework to exploit the property that the BS-RIS channel is high-dimensional but quasi-static, while the RIS-UE channel is mobile but low-dimensional. Specifically, to estimate the quasi-static BS-RIS channel, we propose a dual-link pilot transmission scheme, where the BS transmits downlink pilots and receives uplink pilots reflected by the RIS. Then, we propose a coordinate descent-based algorithm to recover the BS-RIS channel. Since the quasi-static BS-RIS channel is estimated less frequently than the mobile channel is, the average pilot overhead can be reduced from a long-term perspective. Although the mobile RIS-UE channel has to be frequently estimated in a small timescale, the associated pilot overhead is low thanks to its low dimension. The Terahertz band is envisioned to meet the demanding 100 Gbps data rates for 6G wireless communications. Aiming at combating the distance limitation problem with low hardware-cost, ultra-massive MIMO with hybrid beamforming is promising. However, relationships among wavelength, array size and antenna spacing give rise to the inaccuracy of planar-wave channel model (PWM), while an enlarged channel matrix dimension leads to excessive parameters of applying spherical-wave channel model (SWM). Moreover, due to the adoption of hybrid beamforming, channel estimation (CE) needs to recover high-dimensional channels from severely compressed channel observation. In this paper, a hybrid spherical- and planar-wave channel model (HSPM) is investigated and proved to be accurate and efficient by adopting PWM within subarray and SWM among subarrays. Furthermore, a two-phase HSPM CE mechanism is developed. A deep convolutional-neural-network (DCNN) is designed in the first phase for parameter estimation of reference subarrays, while geometric relationships of the remaining channel parameters between reference subarrays are leveraged to complete CE in the second phase. Extensive numerical results demonstrate the HSPM is accurate at various communication distances, array sizes and carrier frequencies. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) have been recently considered as an energy-efficient solution for future wireless networks due to their fast and low-power configuration, which has increased potential in enabling massive connectivity and low-latency communications. Accurate and low-overhead channel estimation in RIS-based systems is one of the most critical challenges due to the usually large number of RIS unit elements and their distinctive hardware constraints. In this paper, we focus on the uplink of a RIS-empowered multi-user Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) uplink communication systems and propose a channel estimation framework based on the parallel factor decomposition to unfold the resulting cascaded channel model. We present two iterative estimation algorithms for the channels between the base station and RIS, as well as the channels between RIS and users. One is based on alternating least squares (ALS), while the other uses vector approximate message passing to iteratively reconstruct two unknown channels from the estimated vectors. To theoretically assess the performance of the ALS-based algorithm, we derived its estimation Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB). We also discuss the downlink achievable sum rate computation with estimated channels and different precoding schemes for the base station. Our extensive simulation results show that our algorithms outperform benchmark schemes and that the ALS technique achieves the CRB. It is also demonstrated that the sum rate using the estimated channels always reach that of perfect channels under various settings, thus, verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed estimation algorithms. Hardware calibration is essential to restore the uplink/downlink channel reciprocity for multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in a time division duplexing mode. Unfortunately, due to the associated overhead, calibration cannot be performed frequently; furthermore, any calibration procedure leaves behind a residual mismatch between the uplink and downlink channels. In this paper, we study the effects of these calibration errors on the achievable rates in the downlink of a multi-cell, multi-user, and distributed massive MIMO system. Specifically, we develop accurate, yet simple, lower-bounds on the per-user achievable rate, assuming either zero-forcing (ZF) or matched filtering (MF) are used. We also introduce a performance loss coefficient as a measure of sensitivity of the performance to the calibration errors. Using this measure, we identify the conditions under which ZF precoding is more sensitive to calibration errors than MF. Finally, we consider the robust weighted sum-rate maximization problem to mitigate the degrading effects of non-ideal calibration. Our numerical experiments show that the rate lower-bounds developed in this paper accurately quantify the impacts of non-ideal calibration on performance. In this paper, we consider a wireless communication system, where a full-duplex hybrid access point (HAP) transmits to a set of cellular users (CUs) in the downlink channel, while receiving data from a set of energy-constrained communication devices like user equipments (UEs) in the uplink channel. The HAP has a massive antenna array, while all CUs and UEs nodes are equipped with single antenna each. Time switching protocol is adopted, where channel estimation, wireless power transfer, and information transfer between UEs, CUs and full-duplex HAP are performed in two phases. By adopting maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) and zero-forcing (ZF) processing at the HAP, the uplink and downlink achievable rate expressions in the large-antenna limit and approximate results that hold for any finite number of antennas are derived. Moreover, the optimum energy beamformer and time-split parameter at the HAP are found to maximize the downlink sum-rate under a constraint on uplink sum-rate. Our findings reveal that our proposed energy beamforming with ZF and MRC/MRT processing for information transfer achieves up to 47% and 14% average sum rate gains as compared with the suboptimum energy beamformer, respectively. This paper investigates the performance analysis of dual selection (i.e., combining user selection and transmit antenna selection) with maximal ratio combining (MRC) over nonidentical imperfect channel estimation in a multiple-input multiple-output system. This paper derives the exact and approximate cumulative density function and probability density function (PDF) for the dual selection with MRC over nonidentical imperfect channel estimation. Using the distribution, the exact and approximate closed-form expressions of the outage probability are derived with quantification of diversity order. Further, this paper derived the exact ergodic capacity and approximate outage capacity of the the dual selection via Gaussian and Gamma approximations. The numerical results show that the capacity of the dual selection with MRC is enhanced by the number of receive antennas as well as the number of user terminals and sum of channel correlation coefficients, while the order of the receive spatial diversity for outage probability is eliminated by the nonidentical channel estimation error. Providing higher data rate is a momentous goal for wireless communications systems, while interference is an important obstacle to reach this purpose. To cope with this problem, interference alignment (IA) has been proposed. In this paper, we propose two rank minimization methods to enhance the performance of IA in the presence of uncoordinated interference, i.e., interference that cannot be properly aligned with the rest of the network and thus is a crucial issue. In this scenario, perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) cases are considered. Our proposed approaches employ the $l_{2}$ and the Schatten- $p$ norms to approximate the rank function, due to its non-convexity. Also, we propose a new convex relaxation to expand the feasible set of our optimization problem, providing lower rank solutions compared to other IA methods from the literature. In addition, we propose a modified weighted-sum method to deal with interference in the relay-aided MIMO interference channel, which employs a set of weighting parameters in order to find more solutions. In wireless communication systems, channel state feedback (CSF) is widely used to improve link performance. However, CSF consumes extra system resources and results in transmission overhead. In this paper, we evaluate such resource consumption in terms of bit rate and provide an explicit expression for the lower bound of the CSF overhead. We propose an overhead optimization mechanism under the constraint of channel state reconstruction accuracy. The numerical simulations show that our paper is beneficial to select the optimum CSF parameters, including the average bit number and channel state feedback period. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is one of the most promising techniques for next generation wireless communications due to its superior capability to provide high spectrum and energy efficiency. Considering the very large number of antennas employed at the base station, however, the pilot overhead for downlink channel estimation becomes unaffordable in frequency division duplex (FDD) multiuser massive MIMO systems. In this paper, we propose an information-theoretic metric to design the pilot for downlink channel estimation in FDD multiuser massive MIMO systems. By exploiting the low-rank nature of the channel covariance matrix, we first derive the minimum number of pilot symbols required to ensure perfect channel recovery, which is much less than the number of antennas at the base station. Further, under a general channel model that the channel vector of each user follows a Gaussian mixture distribution, the pilot symbols are designed by maximizing the weighted sum of the Shannon mutual information between the measurements of the users and their corresponding channel vectors on the complex Grassmannian manifold. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) full-dimensional (FD) MIMO system employs planar arrays at both the base station and the user equipment and can simultaneously support both azimuth and elevation beamforming. In this paper, we propose atomic-norm-based methods for mm-wave FD-MIMO channel estimation under both uniform planar arrays (UPA) and non-uniform planar arrays (NUPA). Unlike existing algorithms, such as compressive sensing (CS) or subspace methods, the atomic-norm-based algorithms do not require to discretize the angle spaces of the angle of arrival and angle of departure into grids, thus provide much better accuracy in estimation. In the UPA case, to reduce the computational complexity, the original large-scale atomic norm minimization problem is approximately reformulated as a semi-definite program (SDP) containing two decoupled two-level Toeplitz matrices. The SDP is then solved via the alternating direction method of multipliers where each iteration involves only closed-form computations. In the NUPA case, the atomic-norm-based formulation for channel estimation becomes nonconvex and a gradient-decent-based algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. This paper proposes a novel semi-blind uplink interference suppression scheme for multicell multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The inter-cell interference (ICI) becomes intenser when a number of users are spatially multiplexed via massive MIMO. Here arises a pilot contamination problem due to the limitation of orthogonal sequence set and thus inter-user interference (IUI) also remains unsuppressed. Our proposal employs a constant modulus algorithm (CMA) known as a blind interference suppression scheme and exploits channel state information (CSI)-aided minimum mean square error (MMSE) postcoding weight as an initial weight of CMA. Although MMSE weight cannot suppress ICI and IUI due to the pilot contamination, it can help subsequent CMA to capture the desired signals which is required for CMA to effectively work. Since CMA can fully exploit degree of freedom of massive arrays by using uncorrelated data signal part, derived weight successfully suppresses ICI/IUI while resolving the pilot contamination problem. A decision feedback channel estimation (DFCE) is then introduced to further improve CSI estimation accuracy and subsequent interference suppression performance. A series of signal processing, MMSE–CMA–DFCE, can be iteratively performed. The computer simulation reveals that our proposal can improve outage probability and it satisfies below the fifth percentile of cumulative distribution with saved symbol amount. For massive multiuser multiple input multiple output (MIMO) (MU-MIMO) systems, pilot contamination (PC) and data interference (DI) are two main factors that affect the accuracy of the superimposed pilot (SP) based channel estimation, provided that the channel coherence time is less than the total number of users. In this paper, to tackle the effect of the PC, we propose a block-diagonal Grassmannian line packing (GLP) approach, in which the specific sequences for different cells are first designed based on the GLP, and then are block-diagonally extended to form the SP matrices for the users in different cells. To also alleviate the effect of DI on the channel estimation, with the designed SP matrices, an iterative channel estimation (ICE) method based on Tikhonov regularization is presented. The impact that the proposed ICE method has on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio with matched filtering receiver is theoretically analyzed. Moreover, the optimal power allocation factor to the SP by maximizing the spectral efficiency (SE) of the target cell is also derived. Numerical results show that the proposed ICE method with the designed SP matrices effectively mitigates the effects of the PC and DI, and hence, improves the accuracy of channel estimation and further the SE of the massive MU-MIMO systems. Communication at millimeter wave frequencies will be one of the essential new technologies in 5G. Acquiring an accurate channel estimate is the key to facilitate advanced millimeter wave hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding techniques. Millimeter wave MIMO channel estimation, however, suffers from a considerably increased channel use overhead. This happens due to the limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains that prevent the digital baseband from directly accessing the signal at each antenna. To address this issue, recent research has focused on adaptive closed-loop and two-way channel estimation techniques. In this paper, unlike the prior approaches, we study a non-adaptive, hence rather simple, open-loop millimeter wave MIMO channel estimation technique. We present a random phase rotation design of channel subspace sampling signals and show that they obey the restricted isometry property (RIP) with high probability. We then formulate the channel estimation as a low-rank subspace decomposition problem and, based on the RIP, show that the proposed framework reveals resilience to a low signal-to-noise ratio. It is revealed that the required number of channel uses ensuring a bounded estimation error is linearly proportional to the degrees of freedom of the channel, whereas it converges to a constant value if the number of RF chains can grow proportionally to the channel dimension while keeping the channel rank fixed. In particular, we show that the tighter the RIP characterization the lower the channel estimation error is. We also devise an iterative technique that effectively finds a suboptimal, but stationary, solution to the formulated problem. The proposed technique is shown to have improved channel estimation accuracy with a substantially low channel use overhead as compared to that of previous closed-loop and two-way adaptation techniques. This paper studies the security aspect of a recently introduced “cell-free massive MIMO” network under a pilot spoofing attack. First, a simple method to recognize the presence of this type of an active eavesdropping attack to a particular user is shown. In order to deal with this attack, we consider the problem of maximizing the achievable data rate of the attacked user or its achievable secrecy rate. The corresponding problems of minimizing the power consumption subject to security constraints are also considered in parallel. Path-following algorithms are developed to solve the posed optimization problems under different power allocation to access points (APs). The recent concept of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can significantly improve the capacity of the communication network, and it has been regarded as a promising technology for the next-generation wireless communications. However, the fundamental challenge of existing massive MIMO systems is that high computational complexity and complicated spatial structures bring great difficulties to exploit the characteristics of the channel and sparsity of these multi-antennas systems. To address this problem, in this paper, we focus on channel estimation and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, and a novel framework that integrates the massive MIMO into deep learning is proposed. To realize end-to-end performance, a deep neural network (DNN) is employed to conduct offline learning and online learning procedures, which is effective to learn the statistics of the wireless channel and the spatial structures in the angle domain. Concretely, the DNN is first trained by simulated data in different channel conditions with the aids of the offline learning, and then corresponding output data can be obtained based on current input data during online learning process. In order to realize super-resolution channel estimation and DOA estimation, two algorithms based on the deep learning are developed, in which the DOA can be estimated in the angle domain without additional complexity directly. Furthermore, simulation results corroborate that the proposed deep learning based scheme can achieve better performance in terms of the DOA estimation and the channel estimation compared with conventional methods, and the proposed scheme is well investigated by extensive simulation in various cases for testing its robustness. Channel estimation is challenging for millimeter-wave massive MIMO with hybrid precoding, since the number of radio frequency chains is much smaller than that of antennas. Conventional compressive sensing based channel estimation schemes suffer from severe resolution loss due to the channel angle quantization. To improve the channel estimation accuracy, we propose an iterative reweight-based superresolution channel estimation scheme in this paper. By optimizing an objective function through the gradient descent method, the proposed scheme can iteratively move the estimated angle of arrivals/departures towards the optimal solutions, and finally realize the superresolution channel estimation. In the optimization, a weight parameter is used to control the tradeoff between the sparsity and the data fitting error. In addition, a singular value decomposition-based preconditioning is developed to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed scheme. This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). In this system, we propose a novel communication framework that is inspired by supervised learning. The key idea of the proposed framework is to learn the nonlinear input–output system, formed by the concatenation of a wireless channel and a quantization function used at the ADCs for data detection. In this framework, a conventional channel estimation process is replaced by a system learning process, in which the conditional probability mass functions (PMFs) of the nonlinear system are empirically learned by sending the repetitions of all possible data signals as pilot signals. Then, the subsequent data detection process is performed based on the empirical conditional PMFs obtained during the system learning. To reduce both the training overhead and the detection complexity, we also develop a supervised-learning-aided successive-interference-cancellation method. In this method, a data signal vector is divided into two subvectors with reduced dimensions. Then, these two subvectors are successively detected based on the conditional PMFs that are learned using artificial noise signals and an estimated channel. For the case of 1-bit ADCs, we derive an analytical expression for the vector error rate of the proposed framework under perfect channel knowledge at the receiver. In this paper, we consider the hybrid time switching (TS) and power splitting (PS) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) protocol design in a full-duplex (FD) massive MIMO system. In this system, an FD base station (BS) serves a set of half-duplex (HD) users and a set of fixed HD sensors. The whole protocol can be divided into two phases based on the idea of TS. The first phase is Training Phase, which is designed for users uplink training and sensors energy harvesting as well as downlink training. Specifically, users transmit uplink pilots for beam-domain (BD) uplink channel estimation at the BS, and the BS transmits energy signals to sensors. Based on the idea of PS, sensors utilize the received energy signals for energy harvesting and BD downlink channel estimation. In the second phase, that is Information Transmission Phase, the BS intelligently schedules users and sensors based on the BD distributions of channels to mitigate self-interference and improve transmission spectral efficiency (SE). In this paper, we explore low-complexity transmission in physically-constrained massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems by means of channel state information (CSI) relaxation. In particular, we propose a strategy to take advantage of the correlation experienced by the channels of neighbour antennas when deployed in tightly packed antenna arrays. The proposed scheme is based on collecting CSI for only a subset of antennas during the pilot training stage and, subsequently, using averages of the acquired CSI for the remaining closely-spaced antennas. By doing this, the total number of radio frequency (RF) chains, for both CSI acquisition and data transmission, and the baseband signal processing are reduced, hence simplifying the overall system operation. At the same time, this impacts the quality of the channel estimation produced after the CSI acquisition process. To characterize this tradeoff, we explore the impact that the number of antennas with instantaneous CSI has on the performance, signal processing complexity, and energy efficiency of time-division duplex (TDD) systems. The analytical and simulation results presented in this paper show that the application of the proposed strategy in size-constrained antenna arrays is able to significantly enhance the energy efficiency against systems with full CSI availability, while approximately preserving their average performance. Wireless communications is one of the most successful technologies in modern years, given that an exponential growth rate in wireless traffic has been sustained for over a century (known as Cooper?s law). This trend will certainly continue, driven by new innovative applications; for example, augmented reality and the Internet of Things. Massive MIMO has been identified as a key technology to handle orders of magnitude more data traffic. Despite the attention it is receiving from the communication community, we have personally witnessed that Massive MIMO is subject to several widespread misunderstandings, as epitomized by following (fictional) abstract: ?The Massive MIMO technology uses a nearly infinite number of high-quality antennas at the base stations. By having at least an order of magnitude more antennas than active terminals, one can exploit asymptotic behaviors that some special kinds of wireless channels have. This technology looks great at first sight, but unfortunately the signal processing complexity is off the charts and the antenna arrays would be so huge that it can only be implemented in millimeter-wave bands.? These statements are, in fact, completely false. In this overview article, we identify 10 myths and explain why they are not true. We also ask a question that is critical for the practical adoption of the technology and which will require intense future research activities to answer properly. In a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the serious pilot contamination problem severely restricts its ability to boost the spectrum utilization. To tackle this problem, the conventional concept of softly reusing the spectrum resources for the inner regions of the neighboring cells has been extended to reuse the pilot resources so as to accommodate more users. Alternatively, properly selecting the users to reuse the pilots among the neighboring cells can alleviate the pilot contamination problem as well. In this paper, we delicately integrate these two concepts to properly reuse the pilots allocated to the outer regions of the cells. By well designing the hazard- and secure-edge regions to manage the pilot reuse, the increment of interference can be effectively suppressed, and, consequently, the more accommodated users can contribute to the remarkably higher sum data rates. Beamforming with antenna arrays has been considered as an enabling technology in future wireless communication systems. To conduct beamforming, one has to know the angle-of-departure (AoD) or angle-of-arrival (AoA). For data detection, the receiver also has to know channel response. In this paper, we propose a new joint AoD, AoA, and channel estimation scheme for pilot-assisted multiple-input-multiple-output–orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. First, a compressive-sensing technique is employed to estimate the channel impulse response, exploiting the sparsity property of wireless channels. Then, AoA and AoD are jointly estimated for each detected path by the maximum likelihood method. The Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB) is also derived and a transmit beamforming scheme is proposed accordingly. In the scenario of available prior information, a maximum a posteriori estimation is proposed. The Bayesian CRLB (BCRLB) for the problem is also derived and a transmit beamforming scheme is further proposed. It turns out that only two training OFDM symbols are required for the estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed methods can approach the CRLB/BCRLB in both scenarios and achieve the same spectral efficiency as that obtained with the ideal channel in millimeter-wave communications. Pilot contamination attack is an important activity of active eavesdropping conducted by a malicious user during channel training phase. This attack is potentially harmful to the physical layer security. In this paper, motivated by the fact that frequency asynchronism could introduce divergence of the transmitted pilot signals between intended user and attacker, we propose a new uncoordinated frequency shift (UFS) scheme for detecting pilot contamination attack in multiple antenna system. During the reverse training phase of the UFS scheme, the legitimate user Bob deliberately introduces multiple random frequency shifts in the publicly known pilot sequence. Since eavesdropper Eve has no knowledge of these random frequency shifts, it is almost impossible for her to pretend exactly like Bob. This provides the opportunity to detect the presence of Eve. An attack detection algorithm is then developed based on source enumeration method. Both the asymptotic performance analysis and numerical results are provided to verify the proposed detection scheme. The proposed scheme is also enhanced based on noise power estimation to cope with attacks from a multi-antenna Eve. Furthermore, the proposed UFS scheme is extended by introducing general parameterized phase shifts. It is demonstrated that the proposed UFS scheme can achieve comparable detection performance as the existing superimposed random sequence based scheme, without sacrifice of legitimate channel estimation performance. In this paper, we consider multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink systems in which there are multiple users with each having a single antenna and one base station (BS) with a large number of antennas. It is assumed that each user and BS have neither small-scale nor large-scale channel state information. For such a noncoherent system, we systematically design a series of absolutely additively uniquely decomposable constellation pairs using the phase-shift keying (PSK) constellations such that when any linear combination of two PSK constellation points with positive weight coefficients is received, each individual PSK signal can be uniquely decoded. With this, a novel noncoherent massive space-time block code with PSK modulation is developed for the system. In a noise-free case, we prove that when the number of the antenna at BS grows to infinity, the transmitted symbols and uplink channel can be uniquely determined if the channel coherence time is at least equal to the number of users. In a noisy case, a minimum Euclidean distance detector and a minimum Riemannian distance detector are developed for efficiently and effectively estimating both the channel coefficients and the transmitted signals. Furthermore, a successive two-symbol update receiver is derived for reducing the computational complexity. The benefits of the proposed scheme are illustrated through application examples in multipair two-way massive MIMO half-duplex relaying system and a two-cell massive MIMO uplink system. In this paper, we study the effect of downlink (DL) training on the achievable sum rate of multiuser massive MIMO channels with spatial correlations, and derive sufficient conditions of the DL channel estimation error covariance matrices that maintain the full multiplexing gain at high data signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs). Given the derived conditions, a simple asymptotic upper bound on the average sum rate loss due to channel estimation is obtained. We derive, in closed-form, training sequences of limited duration that satisfy these conditions. The training duration is variable and increases with the data SNR, while the sequences lie in a subspace spanned by a variable number of user spatial covariance matrices’ eigenvectors. We additionally study the problem of sequence codebook design and find solutions to this problem for uniform linear and rectangular arrays using asymptotic results. For the aforementioned training structure, the designed codebooks are observed numerically to be near-optimal for a moderate number of base station antennas. Due to their ability to identify a sufficient limited number of channel directions to train, the proposed solutions can substantially reduce DL training overheads while providing achievable rates that are comparable with the rates achieved with perfect channel state information. In this paper, we consider massive multiple input multiple output systems that employ linear precoding techniques and are impaired by transmitter-side nonlinearities and channel estimation errors. We present an analytical method for the statistical characterization of the transmitted signals and develop a general framework to obtain analytically, the performance of different precoding techniques under the assumption of imperfect channel state information and for different types of nonlinearities. Regardless of the particular nonlinear transmission scenario, it is shown that the performance penalty associated to the nonlinear distortion can be tolerable if the number of transmit antennas is greater than the number of independent data streams. In this paper, we study the performance of the training based two-step channel estimation in two-way multiple-input multiple-output relay systems over Rayleigh channels. We first estimate the forward channel during the first phase. During the second phase for the composite channel estimation, singular value decomposition based maximum likelihood method is applied in two way relay systems, which is extended from one way relay systems. Hence, the backward channel is estimated with the given forward channel and composite channel. In general, the proposed estimation scheme can also be extended from the system with a single relay antenna to multiple relay antennas. Moreover, we derive the proposed training sequences and relay gain that aim to minimizes the trace of the approximate Bayesian Cramér–Rao lower bound with respect to the individual channels. The numerical results are shown that although the training sequence is designed to improve individual channel mean square error performance, it can also improve composite channel estimator performance. We consider channel estimation for high-speed railway communication systems, where both the transmitter and the receiver are equipped with large-scale antenna arrays. It is known that the throughput of conventional training schemes monotonically decreases with the mobility. Assuming that the moving terminal employs a large linear antenna array, this paper proposes a position-aided channel estimation scheme whereby only a portion of the transmit antennas send pilot symbols and the full channel matrix can be well estimated by using these pilots together with the antenna position information based on the joint spatial-temporal correlation. The relationship between mobility and throughput/DoF is established. Furthermore, the optimal selections of transmit power and time interval partition between the training and data phases as well as the antenna size are presented accordingly. Both analytical and simulation results show that the system throughput with the position-aided channel estimator does not deteriorate appreciably as the mobility increases, which is sharply in contrast with the conventional one. In this paper, we investigate the authentication based on radio channel information in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and formulate the interactions between a receiver with multiple antennas and a spoofing node as a zero-sum physical (PHY)-layer authentication game. In this game, the receiver chooses the test threshold of the hypothesis test to maximize its Bayesian risk-based utility in the spoofing detection, while the adversary chooses its attack rate, i.e., how often a spoofing signal is sent. We derive the Nash equilibrium (NE) of the static PHY-layer authentication game and present the condition that the NE exists, showing that both the spoofing detection error rates and the spoofing rate decrease with the number of transmit and receive antennas. We propose a PHY-layer spoofing detection algorithm for MIMO systems based on Q-learning, in which the receiver applies the reinforcement learning technique to achieve the optimal test threshold via trials in a dynamic game without knowing the system parameters, such as the channel time variation and spoofing cost. We also use Dyna architecture and prioritized sweeping (Dyna-PS) to improve the spoofing detection in time-variant radio environments. The proposed authentication algorithms are implemented over universal software radio peripherals and evaluated via experiments in an indoor environment. Experimental results show that the Dyna-PS-based spoofing detection algorithm further reduces the spoofing detection error rates and increases the utility of the receiver compared with the Q-learning-based algorithm, and both performances improve with more number of transmit or receive antennas. The capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Rayleigh fading channels with full knowledge of channel state information (CSI) at both the transmitter and the receiver (CSI-TR) has been shown recently to scale at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) essentially as SNR log(1/SNR), independently of the number of transmit and receive antennas. In this paper, we investigate the ergodic capacity of MIMO Rayleigh fading channel with estimated channel state information at the transmitter (CSI-T) and possibly imperfect channel state information at the receiver (CSI-R). Our framework can be seen as a generalization of previous works as it can capture the perfect CSI-TR as a special case when the estimation error variance goes to zero. In this paper, we mainly focus on the low SNR regime, and we show that the capacity scales as $(1-\alpha)$ SNR log(1/SNR), where $\alpha$ is the estimation error variance. This characterization shows the loss of performance due to error estimation over the perfect channel state information at both the transmitter and the receiver. As a by-product of our new analysis, we show that our framework can be also extended to characterize the capacity of MIMO Rician fading channels at low SNR with possibly imperfect CSI-T and CSI-R. In wireless communications, massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink systems in which the base station is equipped with a large number of antennas can provide significant spectral and energy efficiency by means of simple signal processing. Therefore, massive MIMO uplink systems are an attractive technology for next-generation wireless systems and for green communications. However, phase noise (PN) introduced by the impairment of oscillators can cause a severe performance loss in wireless communication systems. Solving the PN problem for massive MIMO uplink systems is challenging as it is a multivariate joint PN estimation and data detection problem. The optimal solution is difficult to derive and may lead to high complexity. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity PN suppression scheme based on the zero-forcing detector to solve this problem. By using the ideal PN free output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as a performance upper bound, simulation results show that when the required SNR is satisfied, the output SNR of the proposed scheme can approach the upper bound, except for very large PN variances. Moreover, the complexity of the proposed scheme is low because the proposed scheme can update the current PN estimation and data detection by the previous ones via a simple iterative process. Radiative wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology to provide cost-effective and real-time power supplies to wireless devices. Although radiative WPT shares many similar characteristics with the extensively studied wireless information transfer or communication, they also differ significantly in terms of design objectives, transmitter/receiver architectures and hardware constraints, and so on. In this paper, we first give an overview on the various WPT technologies, the historical development of the radiative WPT technology and the main challenges in designing contemporary radiative WPT systems. Then, we focus on the state-of-the-art communication and signal processing techniques that can be applied to tackle these challenges. Topics discussed include energy harvester modeling, energy beamforming for WPT, channel acquisition, power region characterization in multi-user WPT, waveform design with linear and non-linear energy receiver model, safety and health issues of WPT, massive multiple-input multiple-output and millimeter wave enabled WPT, wireless charging control, and wireless power and communication systems co-design. Channel estimation in multicarrier systems employing filter banks with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) is far less easy compared to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Challenges come from the interference effect, inherent in this type of FBMC systems, and the (generally) nonnegligible frequency selectivity of their subchannels, due to the nature of this modulation and the cyclic prefix (CP)-free transmission. Most of the FBMC/OQAM channel estimation methods rely on the assumption of a low frequency selective channel (thus implying (almost) flat subchannels) in order to more easily (i.e., in a manner analogous to CP-OFDM) tackle this problem. However, they perform quite poorly when applied in more demanding propagation conditions. Others, more recent ones, relax the assumption of low frequency selectivity but they either depend on a parametric model for the channel or they concentrate on persubchannel estimation and often require long training sequences. This paper revisits this problem through a formulation that does not rely on any simplifying assumption about the channel. This gives rise to a new estimation method, applicable to channels of any frequency selectivity, which relies on a very short preamble for training. The latter is optimized with respect to the channel estimation mean squared error and is shown to result in a very significant simplification of the estimation procedure. Both full (block-type) and sparse (comb-type) preambles are considered. Applying these results in low-dispersion channels yields, as special cases, existing and new preamble-based estimation schemes for such scenarios. Hybrid analog/digital precoding is a promising technique to reduce the hardware cost of radio-frequency components compared with the conventional full-digital precoding approach in millimeter-wave multiple-input multiple output systems. However, the large antenna dimensions of the hybrid precoder design makes it difficult to acquire an optimal full-digital precoder. Moreover, it also requires matrix inversion, which leads to high complexity in the hybrid precoder design. In this paper, we propose a low-complexity optimal full-digital precoder acquisition algorithm, named beamspace singular value decomposition (SVD) that saves power for the base station and user equipment. We exploit reduced-dimension beamspace channel state information (CSI) given by compressive sensing (CS) based channel estimators. Then, we propose a CS-assisted beamspace hybrid precoding (CS-BHP) algorithm that leverages CS-based CSI. Simulation results show that the proposed beamspace-SVD reduces complexity by 99.4% compared with an optimal full-digital precoder acquisition using full-dimension SVD. Furthermore, the proposed CS-BHP reduces the complexity of the state-of-the-art approach by 99.6% and has less than 5% performance loss compared with an optimal full-digital precoder. This paper studies the recent novel multiple-input multiple-output transmission technique called quadrature spatial modulation (QSM), in underlay cognitive radio (CR) systems. In particular, a multi-antenna secondary transmitter (ST) communicates with a multi-antenna secondary receiver (SR) in the presence of a primary receiver (PR). Considering only the statistical knowledge of the ST-PR channel gain, the QSM-CR scheme is investigated using a mean value (MV)-based power allocation strategy referred to as MV-based scheme. Furthermore, assuming that the ST-PR channel gain is perfectly known, the QSM-CR scheme is investigated using a power allocation method based on instantaneous channel state information (CSI), referred to as CSI-based scheme. In each scheme, considering imperfect ST-SR channel estimation, we study the secondary system performance, where closed-form expressions for the average pairwise error probability ( \rm \overline PEP ) are derived over Rayleigh fading channels. A tight upper bounded average bit error rate is obtained using the derived \rm \overline PEP expression. Moreover, simple approximate expressions are obtained to get insights on the system diversity and channel estimation errors’ effects. This paper is concerned with the channel estimation problem in millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless systems with large antenna arrays. By exploiting the inherent sparse nature of the mmWave channel, we first propose a fast channel estimation (FCE) algorithm based on a novel overlapped beam pattern design, which can increase the amount of information carried by each channel measurement compared to the existing nonoverlapped designs and thus reduce the required channel estimation time. We develop a maximum likelihood estimator to optimally extract the path information from the channel measurements. Then, we propose a novel rate-adaptive channel estimation (RACE) algorithm, which can dynamically adjust the number of channel measurements based on the expected probability of estimation error (PEE). The performance of both proposed algorithms is analyzed. For the FCE algorithm, an approximate closed-form expression for the PEE is derived. For the RACE algorithm, a lower bound for the minimum signal energy-to-noise ratio required for a given number of channel measurements is developed based on the Shannon–Hartley theorem. Simulation results show that the FCE algorithm significantly reduces the number of channel estimation measurements compared to the existing algorithms using nonoverlapped beam patterns. By adopting the RACE algorithm, we can achieve up to a 6 dB gain in signal energy-to-noise ratio for the same PEE compared to the existing algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we propose a new transmission scheme, called integer forcing-and-forward (IFF), for communications among multipair multiple-antenna users in which each pair exchanges their messages with the help of a single multiple-antenna relay in the multiple-access and broadcast phases. The proposed scheme utilizes integer forcing linear receiver (IFLR) at the relay, which uses equations, i.e., linear integer combinations of messages, to harness intrapair interference. Accordingly, we propose the design of a mean square error (MSE)-based transceiver, including precoder and projection matrices for the relay and users, assuming that perfect channel state information (CSI) is available. In this regard, in the multiple-access phase, we introduce two new MSE criteria for the related precoding and filter designs, i.e., the sum of the equations MSE (Sum-Equation MSE) and the maximum of the equations MSE (Max-Equation MSE), to exploit the equations in the relay. In addition, the convergence of the proposed criteria is proven as well. Moreover, in the broadcast phase, we use the two traditional MSE criteria, i.e., the sum of the users% mean square errors (Sum MSE) and the maximum of the users% mean square errors (Max MSE), to design the related precoding and filters for recovering the relay%s equations by the users. Then, we consider a more practical scenario with imperfect CSI. For this case, the IFLR receiver is modified, and another transceiver design is proposed, which takes into account the effect of channel estimation error. We evaluate the performance of our proposed strategy and compare the results with the conventional amplify-and-forward (AF) and denoise-and-forward (DF) strategies for the same scenario. In this paper, we study the impact of carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation/compensation on the information rate performance of the zero-forcing (ZF) receiver in the uplink of a multiuser (MU) massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) system. Analysis of the derived closed-form expression of the per-user information rate reveals that, with the increasing number of BS antennas $M$, an \mathcal{O}(\sqrt{M}) array gain is achievable, which is the same as that achieved in the ideal zero CFO scenario. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is widely recognized as a promising technology for future 5G wireless communication systems. To achieve the theoretical performance gains in massive MIMO systems, accurate channel-state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is crucial. Due to the overwhelming pilot signaling and channel feedback overhead, however, conventional downlink channel estimation and uplink channel feedback schemes might not be suitable for frequency-division duplexing (FDD) massive MIMO systems. In addition, these two topics are usually separately considered in the literature. In this paper, we propose a joint channel training and feedback scheme for FDD massive MIMO systems. Specifically, we first exploit the temporal correlation of time-varying channels to propose a differential channel training and feedback scheme, which simultaneously reduces the overhead for downlink training and uplink feedback. We next propose a structured compressive sampling matching pursuit (S-CoSaMP) algorithm to acquire a reliable CSIT by exploiting the structured sparsity of wireless MIMO channels. In this paper, a novel concept called a uniquely factorable constellation (UFC) is proposed for the systematic design of noncoherent full-diversity constellations for a wireless communication system that is equipped with a single transmitter antenna and multiple receiver antennas [single input–multiple output (SIMO)], where neither the transmitter nor the receiver knows channel-state information. It is proved that such a UFC design guarantees the unique blind identification of channel coefficients and transmitted signals in a noise-free case by processing only two received signals, as well as full diversity for the noncoherent maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver in a noise case. By using the Lagrange four-square theorem, an algorithm is developed to efficiently and effectively design various sizes of energy-efficient unitary UFCs to optimize the coding gain. In addition, a closed-form optimal energy scale is found to maximize the coding gain for the unitary training scheme based on the commonly used quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Comprehensive computer simulations show that, using the same generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) receiver, the error performance of the unitary UFC designed in this paper outperforms the differential scheme, the optimal unitary training scheme presented in this paper, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) efficient training scheme using the QAM constellation, which, so far, yields the best error performance in the current literature. This paper employs a high resolution quantization framework to study the effects of finite-rate feedback of the channel state information (CSI) on the performance of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems over independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Rayleigh flat fading channels. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, we extend the general distortion analysis of vector quantizers to deal with complex source variables. Necessary and sufficient conditions that guarantee a concise high-resolution distortion analysis in the complex domain is presented. Second, as an application of the proposed complex distortion analysis, tight lower bounds on the capacity loss due to the finite-rate channel quantization are provided for MIMO systems employing a fixed number of equal power spatial beams. Based on the obtained closed-form analytical results, it is shown that the system capacity loss decreases exponentially as the ratio of the quantization rate to the total degrees of freedom of the channel state information to be quantized. Moreover, MIMO CSI-quantizers using mismatched codebooks that are only optimized for high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low-SNR regimes are also investigated to quantify the penalties incurred by the use of mismatched codebooks. In addition, the analysis is extended to deal with MIMO systems using multi-mode spatial multiplexing transmission schemes with finite-rate CSI feedback. Coarse quantization at the base station (BS) of a massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system promises significant power and cost savings. Coarse quantization also enables significant reductions of the raw analog-to-digital converter data that must be transferred from a spatially separated antenna array to the baseband processing unit. The theoretical limits as well as practical transceiver algorithms for such quantized MU-MIMO systems operating over frequency-flat, narrowband channels have been studied extensively. However, the practically relevant scenario where such communication systems operate over frequency-selective, wideband channels is less well understood. This paper investigates the uplink performance of a quantized massive MU-MIMO system that deploys orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) for wideband communication. We propose new algorithms for quantized maximum a posteriori channel estimation and data detection, and we study the associated performance/quantization tradeoffs. Our results demonstrate that coarse quantization (e.g., four to six bits, depending on the ratio between the number of BS antennas and the number of users) in massive MU-MIMO-OFDM systems entails virtually no performance loss compared with the infinite-precision case at no additional cost in terms of baseband processing complexity. Several distributed coordinated precoding methods exist in the downlink multicell multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) literature, many of which assume perfect knowledge of received signal covariance and local effective channels. In this paper, we let the notion of channel state information (CSI) encompass this knowledge of covariances and effective channels. We analyze what local CSI is required in the weighted minimization of the mean square error (WMMSE) algorithm for distributed coordinated precoding, and we study how this required CSI can be obtained in a distributed fashion. Based on pilot-assisted channel estimation, we propose three CSI acquisition methods with different tradeoffs between feedback and signaling, backhaul use, and computational complexity. One of the proposed methods is fully distributed, meaning that it only depends on over-the-air signaling but requires no backhaul, and it results in a fully distributed joint system when coupled with the WMMSE algorithm. Naïvely applying the WMMSE algorithm together with the fully distributed CSI acquisition results in catastrophic performance however; therefore, we propose a robustified WMMSE algorithm (RB-WMMSE) based on the well-known diagonal loading framework. By enforcing properties of the WMMSE solutions with perfect CSI onto the problem with imperfect CSI, the resulting diagonally loaded spatial filters are shown to perform significantly better than the naïve filters. The proposed robust and distributed system is evaluated using numerical simulations and is shown to perform well compared with benchmarks. Under centralized CSI acquisition, the proposed algorithm performs on par with other existing centralized robust WMMSE algorithms.
