Visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising supplement to existing radio frequency-based communication systems. Recently, the use of massive light emitting diodes (LED) and photodetector (PD) arrays have been proposed to increase the capacity of the overall VLC link. At the receiver, the signals received by the PD arrays are combined to enhance the achievable data rates. However, successful combining and subsequent detection depends on accurate channel estimation. In this paper, we consider a typical massive multiple input multiple output VLC scenario with maximal ratio combining, and derive an asymptotic analytical expression for the probability density function (p.d.f) of the residual additive distortion for mobile users. Since the minimum error entropy (MEE)-based learning paradigm outperforms the traditional Bussgang approaches due to the incorporation of order statistics, we derive an MEE-based channel estimator using the analytical expression for the p.d.f of the additive distortion. Simulations are carried out for various LED array-sizes, and under various LED transmit half angles. Furthermore, using the analytically derived p.d.f, the proposed MEE-criterion-based channel estimator achieves lower bit error rate, and faster convergence, as compared to existing minimum mean square error based channel estimator. The 3GPP suggests to combine dual polarized (DP) antenna arrays with the double directional (DD) channel model for downlink channel estimation. This combination strikes a good balance between high-capacity communications and parsimonious channel modeling, and also brings limited feedback schemes for downlink channel state information within reach—since such channel can be fully characterized by several key parameters. However, most existing channel estimation work under the DD model has not yet considered DP arrays, perhaps because of the complex array manifold and the resulting difficulty in algorithm design. In this paper, we first reveal that the DD channel with DP arrays at the transmitter and receiver can be naturally modeled as a low-rank tensor, and thus the key parameters of the channel can be effectively estimated via tensor decomposition algorithms. On the theory side, we show that the DD–DP parameters are identifiable under mild conditions, by leveraging identifiability of low-rank tensors. Furthermore, a compressed tensor decomposition algorithm is developed for alleviating the downlink training overhead. We show that, by using judiciously designed pilot structure, the channel parameters are still guaranteed to be identified via the compressed tensor decomposition formulation even when the size of the pilot sequence is much smaller than what is needed for conventional channel identification methods, such as linear least squares and matched filtering. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) full-dimensional (FD) MIMO system employs planar arrays at both the base station and the user equipment and can simultaneously support both azimuth and elevation beamforming. In this paper, we propose atomic-norm-based methods for mm-wave FD-MIMO channel estimation under both uniform planar arrays (UPA) and non-uniform planar arrays (NUPA). Unlike existing algorithms, such as compressive sensing (CS) or subspace methods, the atomic-norm-based algorithms do not require to discretize the angle spaces of the angle of arrival and angle of departure into grids, thus provide much better accuracy in estimation. In the UPA case, to reduce the computational complexity, the original large-scale atomic norm minimization problem is approximately reformulated as a semi-definite program (SDP) containing two decoupled two-level Toeplitz matrices. The SDP is then solved via the alternating direction method of multipliers where each iteration involves only closed-form computations. In the NUPA case, the atomic-norm-based formulation for channel estimation becomes nonconvex and a gradient-decent-based algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. This paper proposes a novel semi-blind uplink interference suppression scheme for multicell multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The inter-cell interference (ICI) becomes intenser when a number of users are spatially multiplexed via massive MIMO. Here arises a pilot contamination problem due to the limitation of orthogonal sequence set and thus inter-user interference (IUI) also remains unsuppressed. Our proposal employs a constant modulus algorithm (CMA) known as a blind interference suppression scheme and exploits channel state information (CSI)-aided minimum mean square error (MMSE) postcoding weight as an initial weight of CMA. Although MMSE weight cannot suppress ICI and IUI due to the pilot contamination, it can help subsequent CMA to capture the desired signals which is required for CMA to effectively work. Since CMA can fully exploit degree of freedom of massive arrays by using uncorrelated data signal part, derived weight successfully suppresses ICI/IUI while resolving the pilot contamination problem. A decision feedback channel estimation (DFCE) is then introduced to further improve CSI estimation accuracy and subsequent interference suppression performance. A series of signal processing, MMSE–CMA–DFCE, can be iteratively performed. The computer simulation reveals that our proposal can improve outage probability and it satisfies below the fifth percentile of cumulative distribution with saved symbol amount. For massive multiuser multiple input multiple output (MIMO) (MU-MIMO) systems, pilot contamination (PC) and data interference (DI) are two main factors that affect the accuracy of the superimposed pilot (SP) based channel estimation, provided that the channel coherence time is less than the total number of users. In this paper, to tackle the effect of the PC, we propose a block-diagonal Grassmannian line packing (GLP) approach, in which the specific sequences for different cells are first designed based on the GLP, and then are block-diagonally extended to form the SP matrices for the users in different cells. To also alleviate the effect of DI on the channel estimation, with the designed SP matrices, an iterative channel estimation (ICE) method based on Tikhonov regularization is presented. The impact that the proposed ICE method has on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio with matched filtering receiver is theoretically analyzed. Moreover, the optimal power allocation factor to the SP by maximizing the spectral efficiency (SE) of the target cell is also derived. Numerical results show that the proposed ICE method with the designed SP matrices effectively mitigates the effects of the PC and DI, and hence, improves the accuracy of channel estimation and further the SE of the massive MU-MIMO systems. Communication at millimeter wave frequencies will be one of the essential new technologies in 5G. Acquiring an accurate channel estimate is the key to facilitate advanced millimeter wave hybrid multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding techniques. Millimeter wave MIMO channel estimation, however, suffers from a considerably increased channel use overhead. This happens due to the limited number of radio frequency (RF) chains that prevent the digital baseband from directly accessing the signal at each antenna. To address this issue, recent research has focused on adaptive closed-loop and two-way channel estimation techniques. In this paper, unlike the prior approaches, we study a non-adaptive, hence rather simple, open-loop millimeter wave MIMO channel estimation technique. We present a random phase rotation design of channel subspace sampling signals and show that they obey the restricted isometry property (RIP) with high probability. We then formulate the channel estimation as a low-rank subspace decomposition problem and, based on the RIP, show that the proposed framework reveals resilience to a low signal-to-noise ratio. It is revealed that the required number of channel uses ensuring a bounded estimation error is linearly proportional to the degrees of freedom of the channel, whereas it converges to a constant value if the number of RF chains can grow proportionally to the channel dimension while keeping the channel rank fixed. In particular, we show that the tighter the RIP characterization the lower the channel estimation error is. We also devise an iterative technique that effectively finds a suboptimal, but stationary, solution to the formulated problem. The proposed technique is shown to have improved channel estimation accuracy with a substantially low channel use overhead as compared to that of previous closed-loop and two-way adaptation techniques. We consider the problem of channel estimation for uplink multiuser massive MIMO systems, where, in order to significantly reduce the hardware cost and power consumption, one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are used at the base station to quantize the received signal. In this paper, we study the problem of optimal one-bit quantization design for channel estimation in one-bit massive MIMO systems. Our analysis reveals that, if the quantization thresholds are optimally devised, using one-bit ADCs can achieve an estimation error close to (with an increase by a factor of $\pi /2$) that of an ideal estimator that has access to the unquantized data. Since the optimal quantization thresholds are dependent on the unknown channel parameters, we introduce an adaptive quantization scheme in which the thresholds are adaptively adjusted, and a random quantization scheme that randomly generates a set of thresholds based on some statistical prior knowledge of the channel. Simulation results show that our proposed schemes presents a significant performance improvement over the conventional fixed quantization scheme that uses a fixed (typically zero) threshold. In this correspondence paper, we consider a cell-free massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system where access points (APs) serve a much smaller number of users under the time-division duplex operation. The APs first estimate the channels via the uplink training phase. Then, these channel estimates are used to detect desired symbols in the uplink and precode the transmit symbols in the downlink. Nonorthogonality of pilot sequences and AP selection (e.g., received-power-based selection or largest-large-scale-fading based selection schemes) are taken into account. To reduce the effect of pilot contamination, we propose a pilot power control design, which chooses the pilot power control coefficients to minimize the mean-squared error of the channel estimation. This is achieved via the sequential convex approximation method. By using pilot power control in training phase, the system performance is considerably improved. Pilot contamination is known to be one of the main bottlenecks for massive multi-input multioutput (MIMO) networks. For moderately large antenna arrays (of importance to recent/emerging deployments) and correlated MIMO, pilot contamination may not be the dominant limiting factor in certain scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, a rigorous characterization of the achievable rates and their explicit dependence on the angular spread (AS) is not available in the existing literature for moderately large antenna array regime. In this paper, considering eigen-beamforming (EBF) precoding, we derive an exact analytical expression for achievable rates in multicell MIMO systems under pilot contamination, and characterize the relation between the AS, array size, and respective user rates. Our analytical and simulation results reveal that the achievable rates for both the EBF and the regularized zero-forcing precoders follow a nonmonotonic behavior for increasing AS when the antenna array size is moderate. In this correspondence paper, we design a massive nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme with delay provisioning for cellular internet-of-things. In the context of massive access, the severe interuser interference decreases the quality of the received signal, such that it is a nontrivial task to provide a delay provisioning for heterogeneous wireless services. To solve this challenge, we propose a massive NOMA scheme to meet the delay requirements of a large number of users by exploiting the properties of rateless codes. Especially, we present a power allocation algorithm to minimize the power consumption while achieving delay-constrained massive access. This paper studies the security aspect of a recently introduced “cell-free massive MIMO” network under a pilot spoofing attack. First, a simple method to recognize the presence of this type of an active eavesdropping attack to a particular user is shown. In order to deal with this attack, we consider the problem of maximizing the achievable data rate of the attacked user or its achievable secrecy rate. The corresponding problems of minimizing the power consumption subject to security constraints are also considered in parallel. Path-following algorithms are developed to solve the posed optimization problems under different power allocation to access points (APs). This paper studies secure transceiver design for multiuser multiantenna systems with an external passive eavesdropper and a cooperative jamming helper. Due to the finite-rate constraint of feedback channels, only quantized channel state information (CSI) of the legitimate users is available at the transmitter and the helper. A nonlinear-precoded secure transmission strategy is proposed using Tomlinson–Harashima precoding at the transmitter and null-space beamforming at the helper based on the quantized CSI. The accurate closed-form expression of an approximation for the ergodic rate of each legitimate user is obtained using quantization cell approximation for random vector quantization of the channels. Assuming the quantized CSI of the legitimate channels and the helper's channel at the eavesdropper, closed-form expression of an upper bound of the ergodic rate of each user's message at the eavesdropper is also derived. Then, a closed-form expression of an approximation for the worst-case ergodic secrecy sum rate follows. We also theoretically show that, besides the advantage in ergodic rate over the linear precoding scheme, when the quantized CSI is not available at the eavesdropper, Tomlinson–Harashima precoding is also more effective in degrading the received signal quality at the eavesdropper, and, thus, is more capable to enhance the secrecy of the systems compared with the linear precoding scheme. Given the total bandwidth constraint of CSI-feedback channels, an adaptive feedback bit allocation algorithm is proposed for each legitimate user to optimize the ergodic secrecy rate performance. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed nonlinear-precoded secure transmission strategy outperforms the corresponding linear precoding scheme, and significant advantage can be achieved by adaptively allocating the total available feedback bits. This paper considers a multicell downlink (DL) massive MIMO system operating over Ricean fading channels in which each base station (BS) is equipped with a massive antenna array, while each user has a single antenna. We explore equal-gain transmission (EGT), line-of-sight (LOS) component-based EGT (LOS-EGT) and maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) under imperfect channel state information. Closed-form expressions for lower bounds of the achievable rates are derived for EGT over Ricean and Rayleigh fading channels, and for LOS-EGT and MRT over Ricean fading channels. With the obtained closed-form expressions, various power scaling laws concerning DL data transmit power and uplink (UL) pilot transmit power are established and discussed. In particular, it is found that, as the number of BS antennas $M$ grows unlimited, the lower bounds on the rates achieved with EGT, LOS-EGT and MRT schemes approach infinity and are not affected by pilot contamination, while the DL data transmit power and UL pilot transmit power can be scaled down proportionally to ${M^{ -a}}$ and ${M^{ - b}}$ (where $0 \leq a < 1$ and $b > 0$), respectively. Numerical results corroborate the tightness and accuracy of these closed-form expressions and they also show that, when the number of antennas and intercell interference level are large, compared to the MRT, EGT and LOS-EGT are more resistant to intercell interference and pilot contamination. Channel estimation for downlink millimeter wave (mmWave) multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communications over a time-varying channel is demandingly challenging. This is due to a massive number of channel coefficients to be estimated and the severe propagation loss of mmWave transmissions. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes an effective channel estimation scheme for time-varying mmWave channels. Discovering the property that the variations of angles of arrival/departure (AoAs/AoDs) are much slower than that of path gains, we propose a novel transmission frame structure, where the channel estimation is decoupled into two separated stages including AoAs/AoDs estimation followed by path gains estimation. In the first stage, the sparse nature of mmWave channels is leveraged to formulate the AoAs/AoDs estimation into a block-sparse signal recovery problem, and we develop an adaptive angle estimation algorithm to estimate the AoAs/AoDs. In the second stage, the pilot beamforming based on the estimated AoAs/AoDs is designed aiming for maximizing the desired pilot power so that the path gains can be accurately estimated. In this paper, a framework of beamspace channel estimation in millimeter wave massive MIMO system is proposed. The framework includes the design of hybrid precoding and combining matrix as well as the search method for the largest entry of over-sampled beamspace receiving matrix. Then based on the framework, three channel estimation schemes including identity matrix approximation (IA) based scheme, scattered zero off-diagonal (SZO) based scheme and concentrated zero off-diagonal (CZO) based scheme are proposed. These schemes together with the existing channel estimation schemes are compared in terms of computational complexity, estimation error and total time slots for channel training. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes outperform the existing schemes and can approach the performance of the ideal case. Recently, compressive sensing based massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel estimation (CE) has attracted intensive research interest. By exploiting the structured sparsity of massive MIMO channels, it is possible to design structured sparse channel estimation (SSCE) algorithms to significantly reduce the pilot/feedback overheads in massive MIMO downlink CE. However, most existing SSCE algorithms are designed based on oversimplified channel models with restrictive assumptions, and thus perform poorly under realistic channels. In this paper, we propose a Hidden-Markov-Model (HMM) to capture the structured sparsity of multiuser massive MIMO channels. The HMM has the flexibility to model different propagation environments that occur in practice. We derive an efficient approximate message passing algorithm called Turbo-orthogonal approximate message passing (OAMP) to solve the resulting sparse CE problem with an HMM prior. The proposed Turbo-OAMP does not require knowledge of the HMM channel parameters, which is automatically learned based on the expectation maximization framework. As a result, the proposed Turbo-OAMP algorithm derived from the HMM works well for realistic channels with complicated propagation environments and unknown channel parameters. The recent concept of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can significantly improve the capacity of the communication network, and it has been regarded as a promising technology for the next-generation wireless communications. However, the fundamental challenge of existing massive MIMO systems is that high computational complexity and complicated spatial structures bring great difficulties to exploit the characteristics of the channel and sparsity of these multi-antennas systems. To address this problem, in this paper, we focus on channel estimation and direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, and a novel framework that integrates the massive MIMO into deep learning is proposed. To realize end-to-end performance, a deep neural network (DNN) is employed to conduct offline learning and online learning procedures, which is effective to learn the statistics of the wireless channel and the spatial structures in the angle domain. Concretely, the DNN is first trained by simulated data in different channel conditions with the aids of the offline learning, and then corresponding output data can be obtained based on current input data during online learning process. In order to realize super-resolution channel estimation and DOA estimation, two algorithms based on the deep learning are developed, in which the DOA can be estimated in the angle domain without additional complexity directly. Furthermore, simulation results corroborate that the proposed deep learning based scheme can achieve better performance in terms of the DOA estimation and the channel estimation compared with conventional methods, and the proposed scheme is well investigated by extensive simulation in various cases for testing its robustness. Channel estimation is challenging for millimeter-wave massive MIMO with hybrid precoding, since the number of radio frequency chains is much smaller than that of antennas. Conventional compressive sensing based channel estimation schemes suffer from severe resolution loss due to the channel angle quantization. To improve the channel estimation accuracy, we propose an iterative reweight-based superresolution channel estimation scheme in this paper. By optimizing an objective function through the gradient descent method, the proposed scheme can iteratively move the estimated angle of arrivals/departures towards the optimal solutions, and finally realize the superresolution channel estimation. In the optimization, a weight parameter is used to control the tradeoff between the sparsity and the data fitting error. In addition, a singular value decomposition-based preconditioning is developed to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed scheme. This paper presents two novel approaches for joint carrier frequency offset (CFO) and doubly selective channel estimation in the uplink of multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiple access (MIMO-OFDMA) systems. Considering high-mobility situations, where channels change within one OFDMA symbol interval, and the time varying nature of CFOs, basis expansion modeling (BEM) is employed to represent the time variations of the channel. Two new approaches are then proposed based on Schmidt–Kalman filtering (SKF). The first approach utilizes Schmidt-extended Kalman filtering for each user to estimate CFO and BEM coefficients. The second approach uses Gaussian particle filtering along with SKF to estimate CFO and BEM coefficients of each user. The Bayesian Cramér–Rao bound is derived, and the performances of the new schemes are evaluated using the mean square errors. This paper considers a multiple-input multiple-output system with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). In this system, we propose a novel communication framework that is inspired by supervised learning. The key idea of the proposed framework is to learn the nonlinear input–output system, formed by the concatenation of a wireless channel and a quantization function used at the ADCs for data detection. In this framework, a conventional channel estimation process is replaced by a system learning process, in which the conditional probability mass functions (PMFs) of the nonlinear system are empirically learned by sending the repetitions of all possible data signals as pilot signals. Then, the subsequent data detection process is performed based on the empirical conditional PMFs obtained during the system learning. To reduce both the training overhead and the detection complexity, we also develop a supervised-learning-aided successive-interference-cancellation method. In this method, a data signal vector is divided into two subvectors with reduced dimensions. Then, these two subvectors are successively detected based on the conditional PMFs that are learned using artificial noise signals and an estimated channel. For the case of 1-bit ADCs, we derive an analytical expression for the vector error rate of the proposed framework under perfect channel knowledge at the receiver. In this paper, we consider the hybrid time switching (TS) and power splitting (PS) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) protocol design in a full-duplex (FD) massive MIMO system. In this system, an FD base station (BS) serves a set of half-duplex (HD) users and a set of fixed HD sensors. The whole protocol can be divided into two phases based on the idea of TS. The first phase is Training Phase, which is designed for users uplink training and sensors energy harvesting as well as downlink training. Specifically, users transmit uplink pilots for beam-domain (BD) uplink channel estimation at the BS, and the BS transmits energy signals to sensors. Based on the idea of PS, sensors utilize the received energy signals for energy harvesting and BD downlink channel estimation. In the second phase, that is Information Transmission Phase, the BS intelligently schedules users and sensors based on the BD distributions of channels to mitigate self-interference and improve transmission spectral efficiency (SE). Then, the BS forms transmit beamformers for transmitting information to users and receive beamformers for receiving signals transmitted by sensors. By optimizing transmit powers at the BS during the two phases and the TS ratio, the system achievable sum-rate is maximized. This paper studies the statistical channel state information (S-CSI) acquisition problem in the nonstationary massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) environment, where both the instantaneous and statistical channel states are time varying. First, we set up a hidden statistical channel state Markov model (HSCSM model). Then, the parameter of the HSCSM model is estimated through the observed sequence of received signals. Next, based on the HSCSM model and its estimated parameter, the S-CSI is obtained through a maximum a-posteriori decision process. Simulation results show that an accurate S-CSI acquisition can be achieved by the proposed approach in the nonstationary massive MIMO environment. In addition, the estimation accuracy rate of the proposed approach increases with the length of observation sequence as well as the number of antennas, where a tradeoff between them exists given a limited computing ability/storage space. In practical applications, an imperfect channel estimate over a noisy channel is inevitable. This paper investigates an interference-aware receiver in which colored-estimation-noise-based maximum-likelihood (CEN-ML) detection is employed to mitigate the impact of imperfect channel estimates. It is shown that the CEN-ML detection, which treats the channel estimation errors as colored noise, has superior performance and is robust to imperfect channel estimation. However, a CEN-ML interference-aware detector usually requires computational efforts that are too complex for multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) interference-limited systems. To reduce the complexity, this paper proposes new methods for both the preprocessing and tree-search stages of an interference-aware sphere detector (SD). First, a channel extended matrix is constructed using the information from channel estimation errors in a preprocessing stage. The channel extension model can reduce the complexity without performance loss. Second, two tree pruning (TP) criteria are developed in a tree-search stage to make the implementation of the CEN-ML SD feasible. The first criterion is based on a lower bound of the CEN-ML metric and can achieve the same result as the optimal brute-force method. The second criterion is derived from an approximated metric and can further reduce the complexity with small performance loss. Simulation results for typical Third-Generation Partnership Project Long-Term Evolution (LTE)/LTE-Advanced scenarios show that the new methods provide the ability to deal with the channel estimation errors and to achieve a better tradeoff between complexity and performance (e.g., in terms of throughput or error rate) in interference-limited scenarios. The proposed low-complexity CEN-ML SD can have a gain of more than 10 dB than the other investigated detection for 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) or 64-QAM at a target coded block error rate (BLER) of \mbox10^-2. In this paper, we explore low-complexity transmission in physically-constrained massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems by means of channel state information (CSI) relaxation. In particular, we propose a strategy to take advantage of the correlation experienced by the channels of neighbour antennas when deployed in tightly packed antenna arrays. The proposed scheme is based on collecting CSI for only a subset of antennas during the pilot training stage and, subsequently, using averages of the acquired CSI for the remaining closely-spaced antennas. By doing this, the total number of radio frequency (RF) chains, for both CSI acquisition and data transmission, and the baseband signal processing are reduced, hence simplifying the overall system operation. At the same time, this impacts the quality of the channel estimation produced after the CSI acquisition process. To characterize this tradeoff, we explore the impact that the number of antennas with instantaneous CSI has on the performance, signal processing complexity, and energy efficiency of time-division duplex (TDD) systems. The analytical and simulation results presented in this paper show that the application of the proposed strategy in size-constrained antenna arrays is able to significantly enhance the energy efficiency against systems with full CSI availability, while approximately preserving their average performance. This paper concerns the uplink of multicell multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To tackle the effect of pilot contamination that is generally viewed as a bottleneck in previous work, this paper presents a superimposed pilot (SP)-aided uplink channel estimation scheme and mathematically characterizes the impact that an SP has on the performance of such a very large MIMO system. It is shown that there are two types of interference components that do not vanish, even when the number of antennas $M$ grows to infinity. The first type, which is referred to as cross-contamination, is due to the correlation between the SP and data among different cells. The second type, which is referred to as self-contamination, is due to the dependence between channel estimation and estimation error. Cross-contamination is, in principle, similar to pilot contamination in a conventional pilot-based multicell MIMO system, whereas self-contamination is unique for the SP-aided scheme. Both theoretical and simulation results demonstrate that the SP-aided scheme can effectively reduce the estimation contamination by increasing the data frame size and, in turn, achieve a significant improvement over the spectral efficiency, in comparison with conventional pilot-based methods. Wireless communications is one of the most successful technologies in modern years, given that an exponential growth rate in wireless traffic has been sustained for over a century (known as Cooper?s law). This trend will certainly continue, driven by new innovative applications; for example, augmented reality and the Internet of Things. Massive MIMO has been identified as a key technology to handle orders of magnitude more data traffic. Despite the attention it is receiving from the communication community, we have personally witnessed that Massive MIMO is subject to several widespread misunderstandings, as epitomized by following (fictional) abstract: ?The Massive MIMO technology uses a nearly infinite number of high-quality antennas at the base stations. By having at least an order of magnitude more antennas than active terminals, one can exploit asymptotic behaviors that some special kinds of wireless channels have. This technology looks great at first sight, but unfortunately the signal processing complexity is off the charts and the antenna arrays would be so huge that it can only be implemented in millimeter-wave bands.? These statements are, in fact, completely false. In this overview article, we identify 10 myths and explain why they are not true. We also ask a question that is critical for the practical adoption of the technology and which will require intense future research activities to answer properly. When there are a large number of antennas in massive MIMO systems, the transmitted wideband signal will be sensitive to the physical propagation delay of electromagnetic waves across the large array aperture, which is called the spatial-wideband effect. In this scenario, the transceiver design is different from most of the existing works, which presume that the bandwidth of the transmitted signals is not that wide, ignore the spatial-wideband effect, and only address the frequency selectivity. In this paper, we investigate spatial- and frequency-wideband effects, called dual-wideband effects in massive MIMO systems from the array signal processing point of view. Taking millimeter-wave-band communications as an example, we describe the transmission process to address the dual-wideband effects. By exploiting the channel sparsity in the angle domain and the delay domain, we develop the efficient uplink and downlink channel estimation strategies that require much less amount of training overhead and cause no pilot contamination. Thanks to the array signal processing techniques, the proposed channel estimation is suitable for both TDD and FDD massive MIMO systems. This paper studies symbol error rate (SER) analysis of a user scheduling and space-time block coding (i.e., scheduled STBC) with power allocation using statistical channel state information (CSI) in cognitive radio multiple-input multiple-output (CR-MIMO) systems. The exact SER of the proposed scheme with the statistical CSI is derived for CR-MIMO systems including asymptotic analysis under nonfeedback delay. From analytical results, we observe that the proposed scheduled STBC scheme with the statistical CSI provides the transmit and receive spatial diversity, as well as the multiuser diversity, while the conventional transmit antenna selection (TAS)-based scheme with the statistical CSI only provides the receive spatial diversity. Furthermore, the exact SER of the scheduled STBC with the statistical CSI in CR-MIMO systems is derived under feedback delay between the transmitter and the receiver of the CR system. From the analysis, we find that though the multiuser diversity is diminished by feedback delay, the proposed scheme with feedback delay still provides the transmit and receive spatial diversity, which results in diversity order gain over the conventional TAS-based scheme with nonfeedback delay. In a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the serious pilot contamination problem severely restricts its ability to boost the spectrum utilization. To tackle this problem, the conventional concept of softly reusing the spectrum resources for the inner regions of the neighboring cells has been extended to reuse the pilot resources so as to accommodate more users. Alternatively, properly selecting the users to reuse the pilots among the neighboring cells can alleviate the pilot contamination problem as well. In this paper, we delicately integrate these two concepts to properly reuse the pilots allocated to the outer regions of the cells. By well designing the hazard- and secure-edge regions to manage the pilot reuse, the increment of interference can be effectively suppressed, and, consequently, the more accommodated users can contribute to the remarkably higher sum data rates. To more efficiently realize the coded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission and improve the system performance, in this paper, we propose a framework combining the polar coding and the MIMO technique, namely the polar-coded MIMO (PC-MIMO) systems. The MIMO transmission will be recognized from the novel perspective of channel polarization. Combining the polar coding and modulation, the MIMO transmission channel is decomposed into a series of bit-polarized channels under the three-stage channel transform, that means the antenna $\rightarrow$ modulation $\rightarrow$ bit partition. Based on this generalized channel polarization transform, the PC-MIMO systems allow a joint optimization of polar coding, signal modulation, and MIMO transmission. Specifically, for the first-stage transform, we propose two schemes, namely sequential antenna partition (SAP) and parallel antenna partition (PAP). For the SAP-based PC-MIMO, by using the successive detection of the MIMO signal, the antenna data streams are sequentially decomposed and polarized. In addition, a joint multistage detection and decoding scheme is proposed to combine the multilevel coding method in the second- and third-stage transforms to fully utilize the multiplexing gain and the coding gain. In contrast, the PAP-based PC-MIMO exploits the channel polarization of parallel MIMO detection and concatenates the bit-interleaved coded modulation structure in the second- and third-stage transforms to reduce the processing latency. The simulation results over the MIMO channel with the Rayleigh fast fading show that the proposed PC-MIMO schemes can well outperform the turbo-coded MIMO schemes utilized in many mainstream communication systems. This paper is concerned with the sum-rate maximization problem in multiple-input multiple-output interference channels. We design the transmit covariance matrix, associated with each transmitter to maximize the sum-rate of the network when the number of data symbols is unknown. The design problem is nonconvex and then hard to be solved. We devise a semidistributed design methodology according to majorization–minimization technique to deal with the optimization problem. This leads us to a convex quadratically constrained quadratic program at each iteration with a semiclosed form solution. The proposed method is computationally efficient and converges to stationary points of the problem. The fact that the method is based on a distributed processing framework along with relatively low computational burden ( $\mathcal{O}(\max \lbrace M,N\rbrace ^{2.3})$ per iteration with $M$ and $N$ being the number of antennas at the transmitter and receiver, respectively) for the user terminals can make it a potential candidate for practical implementations. Finally, we extend the proposed method for the case with channel estimation errors. Simulation results verify the efficiency of the proposed method, and in a typical scenario we have around 60 times lower run-time when compared to the counterparts of the method. Beamforming with antenna arrays has been considered as an enabling technology in future wireless communication systems. To conduct beamforming, one has to know the angle-of-departure (AoD) or angle-of-arrival (AoA). For data detection, the receiver also has to know channel response. In this paper, we propose a new joint AoD, AoA, and channel estimation scheme for pilot-assisted multiple-input-multiple-output–orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. First, a compressive-sensing technique is employed to estimate the channel impulse response, exploiting the sparsity property of wireless channels. Then, AoA and AoD are jointly estimated for each detected path by the maximum likelihood method. The Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB) is also derived and a transmit beamforming scheme is proposed accordingly. In the scenario of available prior information, a maximum a posteriori estimation is proposed. The Bayesian CRLB (BCRLB) for the problem is also derived and a transmit beamforming scheme is further proposed. It turns out that only two training OFDM symbols are required for the estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed methods can approach the CRLB/BCRLB in both scenarios and achieve the same spectral efficiency as that obtained with the ideal channel in millimeter-wave communications. This paper considers a multipair amplify-and-forward massive multipair multiple-input multiple-output relaying system with one-bit analog-to-digital converters and one-bit digital-to-analog converters at the relay. The channel state information is estimated via pilot training, and then utilized by the relay to perform simple maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission processing. Leveraging on the Bussgang decomposition, an exact achievable rate is derived for the system with correlated quantization noise. Based on this, a closed-form asymptotic approximation for the achievable rate is presented, thereby enabling efficient evaluation of the impact of key parameters on the system performance. Furthermore, power scaling laws are characterized to study the potential energy efficiency associated with deploying massive one-bit antenna arrays at the relay. In addition, a power allocation strategy is designed to compensate for the rate degradation caused by the coarse quantization. Our results suggest that the quality of the channel estimates depends on the specific orthogonal pilot sequences that are used, contrary to unquantized systems where any set of orthogonal pilot sequences gives the same result. Pilot contamination attack is an important activity of active eavesdropping conducted by a malicious user during channel training phase. This attack is potentially harmful to the physical layer security. In this paper, motivated by the fact that frequency asynchronism could introduce divergence of the transmitted pilot signals between intended user and attacker, we propose a new uncoordinated frequency shift (UFS) scheme for detecting pilot contamination attack in multiple antenna system. During the reverse training phase of the UFS scheme, the legitimate user Bob deliberately introduces multiple random frequency shifts in the publicly known pilot sequence. Since eavesdropper Eve has no knowledge of these random frequency shifts, it is almost impossible for her to pretend exactly like Bob. This provides the opportunity to detect the presence of Eve. An attack detection algorithm is then developed based on source enumeration method. Both the asymptotic performance analysis and numerical results are provided to verify the proposed detection scheme. The proposed scheme is also enhanced based on noise power estimation to cope with attacks from a multi-antenna Eve. Furthermore, the proposed UFS scheme is extended by introducing general parameterized phase shifts. It is demonstrated that the proposed UFS scheme can achieve comparable detection performance as the existing superimposed random sequence based scheme, without sacrifice of legitimate channel estimation performance. Antenna selection (AS) is a promising technology to substantially reduce the complexity of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, spatial correlation and imperfect estimation of channel state information (CSI) are well known to have a direct impact on the capacity of feasible MIMO schemes. In this paper, a tight closed-form approximation of the ergodic capacity for correlated Rayleigh fading multiuser MIMO channels with receive AS and imperfect CSI is presented. The derived expression takes into account the spatial correlation at both link sides and channel estimation error at the receiver. It can be used for arbitrary numbers of users, antennas, and receive RF chains. Furthermore, a concise analytical capacity formula is derived in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. Numerical results validate the accuracy of our closed-form expressions over different channel conditions and SNRs. The new capacity approximation extends the state-of-the-art and enables efficient performance evaluation of varied multiantenna applications including massive MIMO for 5G systems. Two-stage beamforming is a transmit strategy that uses two types of beamformers to reduce the feedback overhead of frequency-division-duplexing massive multiple-input multiple-output systems that are spatially correlated. In this paper, we present large system analysis of two-stage beamforming when a transmitter has limited channel information from feedback and when regularized-zero-forcing (RZF) is used as a second-stage beamformer. We consider two random-vector-quantization-based feedback schemes that can be respectively applied when users have perfect channel information or perfect effective channel information. For each feedback method, we analyze both expected signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and expected rate loss and then characterize their bounds as a function of the number of feedback bits. From the characterization, we reveal that the sum rate of two-stage beamforming is very sensitive to the regularization parameter of RZF, especially when the number of feedback bits is limited. Motivated by this, we derive the optimal regularization parameter that maximizes the SINR of two-stage beamforming with limited feedback. Using simulations, we verify the tightness of the characterized bounds and quantify how the use of the optimal regularization parameter improves the sum rate of two-stage beamforming. In this paper, we consider multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink systems in which there are multiple users with each having a single antenna and one base station (BS) with a large number of antennas. It is assumed that each user and BS have neither small-scale nor large-scale channel state information. For such a noncoherent system, we systematically design a series of absolutely additively uniquely decomposable constellation pairs using the phase-shift keying (PSK) constellations such that when any linear combination of two PSK constellation points with positive weight coefficients is received, each individual PSK signal can be uniquely decoded. With this, a novel noncoherent massive space-time block code with PSK modulation is developed for the system. In a noise-free case, we prove that when the number of the antenna at BS grows to infinity, the transmitted symbols and uplink channel can be uniquely determined if the channel coherence time is at least equal to the number of users. In a noisy case, a minimum Euclidean distance detector and a minimum Riemannian distance detector are developed for efficiently and effectively estimating both the channel coefficients and the transmitted signals. Furthermore, a successive two-symbol update receiver is derived for reducing the computational complexity. The benefits of the proposed scheme are illustrated through application examples in multipair two-way massive MIMO half-duplex relaying system and a two-cell massive MIMO uplink system. This paper considers a novel virtual pilot-assisted channel estimation algorithm for multiple input multiple output single carrier frequency domain equalization (MIMO-SCFDE) systems over fast time-varying multipath channels. Given that the fast time-varying channels can no longer support the assumption that the channel frequency-domain response remains invariant for the duration of one SC-FDE symbol, most of the channel estimation methods cannot be directly applied to MIMO-SCFDE systems. We put forward an iterative interfrequency interference cancellation method for the time-varying multipath channels over one SC-FDE symbol. The proposed method utilizes the virtual pilot-assisted channel estimation and partial minimum-mean-square-error equalization to improve the accuracy of the estimation. This paper investigates an outage-constrained secrecy rate maximization (OC-SRM) problem based on the statistical channel uncertainty assumption in an underlay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio network, where the secondary transmitter provides simultaneous wireless information and power transfer to receivers. Our objective is to design the transmit covariance matrix and artificial noise aided covariance matrix through maximizing the secrecy rate of the secondary user while satisfying the given outage probability requirements. The designed problem is nonconvex and challenging. We employ the existing theory to reformulate the original problem into two equivalent subproblems by introducing auxiliary variables in order to overcome the difficulty arising from the Shannon capacity expression. The Bernstein-type inequality approach is resorted to conservatively approximate the probabilistic constraints. The merit of the transformation and conversion is that the tractable solutions of the original OC-SRM problem can be easily obtained through solving two convex conic subproblems alternately. This paper addresses the problem of downlink channel estimation in frequency-division duplexing massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. The existing methods usually exploit hidden sparsity under a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) basis to estimate the downlink channel. However, there are at least two shortcomings of these DFT-based methods: first, they are applicable to uniform linear arrays (ULAs) only, since the DFT basis requires a special structure of ULAs; and second, they always suffer from a performance loss due to the leakage of energy over some DFT bins. To deal with the above-mentioned shortcomings, we introduce an off-grid model for downlink channel sparse representation with arbitrary two-dimensional-array antenna geometry, and propose an efficient sparse Bayesian learning approach for the sparse channel recovery and off-grid refinement. The main idea of the proposed off-grid method is to consider the sampled grid points as adjustable parameters. Utilizing an in-exact block majorization–minimization algorithm, the grid points are refined iteratively to minimize the off-grid gap. Finally, we further extend the solution to uplink-aided channel estimation by exploiting the angular reciprocity between downlink and uplink channels, which brings enhanced recovery performance. Time-division duplex (TDD)-based massive MIMO systems rely on the reciprocity of the wireless propagation channels when calculating the downlink precoders based on uplink pilots. However, the effective uplink and downlink channels incorporating the analog radio front-ends of the base station (BS) and user equipments (UEs) exhibit non-reciprocity due to non-identical behavior of the individual transmit and receive chains. When the downlink precoder is not aware of such channel non-reciprocity (NRC), system performance can be significantly degraded due to the NRC-induced interference terms. In this paper, we consider a general TDD-based massive MIMO system where frequency-response mismatches at both the BS and UEs, as well as the mutual coupling mismatches at the BS large-antenna system all coexist and induce channel NRC. Based on the NRC-impaired signal models, we first propose a novel iterative estimation method for acquiring both the BS and UE side NRC matrices and then also propose an efficient NRC-aware downlink precoder design which utilizes the obtained estimates. Furthermore, an efficient pilot signaling scheme between the BS and UEs is introduced in order to facilitate executing the proposed estimation method and the NRC-aware precoding technique in practical systems. Comprehensive numerical results indicate substantially improved spectral efficiency performance when the proposed NRC estimation and NRC-aware precoding methods are adopted, compared to the existing state-of-the-art methods. In this paper, we study the effect of downlink (DL) training on the achievable sum rate of multiuser massive MIMO channels with spatial correlations, and derive sufficient conditions of the DL channel estimation error covariance matrices that maintain the full multiplexing gain at high data signal-to-noise-ratios (SNRs). Given the derived conditions, a simple asymptotic upper bound on the average sum rate loss due to channel estimation is obtained. We derive, in closed-form, training sequences of limited duration that satisfy these conditions. The training duration is variable and increases with the data SNR, while the sequences lie in a subspace spanned by a variable number of user spatial covariance matrices’ eigenvectors. We additionally study the problem of sequence codebook design and find solutions to this problem for uniform linear and rectangular arrays using asymptotic results. For the aforementioned training structure, the designed codebooks are observed numerically to be near-optimal for a moderate number of base station antennas. Due to their ability to identify a sufficient limited number of channel directions to train, the proposed solutions can substantially reduce DL training overheads while providing achievable rates that are comparable with the rates achieved with perfect channel state information. This paper presents sparse Bayesian learning (SBL)-based schemes for approximately sparse channel estimation in an orthogonal space-time block coded (OSTBC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless system. The parameterized prior-based SBL framework is employed to present a pilot scheme for an ill-posed OSTBC MIMO-OFDM channel estimation scenario. Maximum likelihood symbol detection (MLSD) has been incorporated in the expectation-maximization framework for SBL-based channel estimation. This has led to the development of a novel scheme for joint approximately sparse channel estimation and symbol detection. The proposed scheme performs SBL-based channel estimation in the E-step followed by a modified ML decision metric-based symbol detection in the M-step. Bayesian Cramér–Rao bounds are obtained for the genie minimum mean-squared error estimators corresponding to the SBL schemes. Closed-form bit error probability expressions are derived for the MLSD in the presence of SBL-based channel estimation errors. This paper investigates a new analog beamforming architecture for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where each of the multiple transmit antennas is switched to be on or off to form a beam according to the channel state information at transmitters. This on–off analog beamforming (OABF) scheme has the advantages in terms of both hardware complexities and algorithmic complexities. OABF can completely remove the high-cost, power-consuming, and bulky analog phase shifters that are extensively employed by traditional analog beamforming schemes; it only requires the deployment of low-cost analog switches that are easy to implement. Moreover, we show that the beams formed by such simple antenna on–off switch operations can achieve rather good performances with low-complexity beamforming algorithms. Specifically, we first propose two optimal signal-to-noise ratio maximization algorithms to determine the on–off state of each switch under the per-antenna power constraint and the total power constraint, respectively. After that, we theoretically prove that OABF can achieve the full diversity gain and the full array gain with complexities up to a polynomial order. Accurate channel estimation with small pilot overhead is vital to improve the capacity and reliability of massive MIMO systems. Recently, compressed sensing has been applied to reduce the pilot overhead in such systems by exploiting the underlying structured channel sparsity. In this paper, we propose a structured turbo compressed sensing (Turbo-CS) framework for the design and analysis of structured sparse channel estimation algorithms. In this framework, a Markov prior is used to model the structured sparsity in massive MIMO channels. Then we extend the Turbo-CS algorithm for independent and identically distributed priors to propose a structured Turbo-CS algorithm to solve the resulting sparse channel estimation problem with the Markov chain prior. We also accurately characterize the performance of the algorithm using state evolution. As compared to the existing algorithms, both the state evolution analysis and simulations show that the structured Turbo-CS algorithm can substantially enhance the channel estimation performance. Massive MIMO is a variant of multiuser MIMO, in which the number of antennasM at the base-station is very large. It has been observed that in many realistic propagation scenarios, although the user channel vectors have a very high-dim M, they lie on low-dim subspaces because of their limited angular spread (spatial correlation). This low-dim subspace structure remains stable across several coherence blocks and can be exploited to improve the system performance. In a recent work, we addressed this problem and proposed a very effective novel algorithm referred to as Approximate Maximum-Likelihood (AML), which was formulated as a semi-definite program (SDP). In this paper, we address two problems left open in our previous work, namely, computational complexity and tracking. We propose a new algorithm that is reminiscent of Multiple Measurement Vectors (MMV) problem in Compressed Sensing and prove that it is equivalent to the AML Algorithm for sufficiently dense angular grids. It has also a very low computational complexity and is able to track the sharp transitions in the channel statistics very quickly. We provide numerical simulations to assess the estimation/tracking performance of our proposed algorithm, with a particular emphasis on situations where a direct implementation of the SDP is infeasible in real-time. Our proposed algorithm is of independent interest in applications other than massive MIMO. In this paper, we consider massive multiple input multiple output systems that employ linear precoding techniques and are impaired by transmitter-side nonlinearities and channel estimation errors. We present an analytical method for the statistical characterization of the transmitted signals and develop a general framework to obtain analytically, the performance of different precoding techniques under the assumption of imperfect channel state information and for different types of nonlinearities. Regardless of the particular nonlinear transmission scenario, it is shown that the performance penalty associated to the nonlinear distortion can be tolerable if the number of transmit antennas is greater than the number of independent data streams. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology for future wireless communication systems. By utilizing the advanced lens antenna arrays, a mmWave lens multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system significantly reduces the number of radio-frequency (RF) chains required, and thus, achieves cost-effective implementation. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation scheme for the mmWave lens MIMO system with limited RF chains. The proposed scheme is applicable for the general mmWave MIMO communications, regardless of narrow-band or wide-band, time-division-duplexing or frequency-division-duplexing operations. By exploiting the energy-focusing property of lens arrays, jointly with the multipath sparsity of mmWave channels, the proposed channel estimation scheme requires only low-complexity two-way energy-based antenna selections and reduced-size MIMO channel estimation. Numerical results show that under limited RF chains and taking the channel training overhead and imperfect estimation into account, the proposed lens MIMO system achieves significantly higher throughput compared to the more complex benchmark system with the conventional uniform planar array and MIMO-orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing-based transmissions. In this paper, the feasibility of a new downlink transmission mode in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems is investigated with two types of users, i.e., the users with only statistical channel state information (CSI) and the users with imperfect instantaneous CSI. The problem of downlink precoding design with mixed utilization of statistical and imperfect instantaneous CSI is addressed. We first theoretically analyze the impact of the mutual interference between the two types of users on their achievable rate. Then, considering the mutual interference suppression, we propose an extended zero forcing and an extended maximum ratio transmission precoding methods to minimize the total transmit power of base station and to maximize the received signal power of users, respectively. Thanks to the exploitation of statistical CSI, pilot-based channel estimation is avoided enabling more active users, higher system sum rate, and shorter transmission delay. Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) is expected to be one of the enabling technologies for fifth-generation cellular networks. One of the major challenges in massive MIMO systems is the accurate joint estimation of the channel and noise variance, which significantly affects the performance of wireless communications in practical scenarios. In this paper, we first derive a novel maximum likelihood estimator for the noise variance at the receiver of massive MIMO systems considering practical impairments such as pilot contamination. Then, this estimate is used to compute the minimum mean square error estimate of the channel. In order to measure the performance of the proposed noise variance estimator, we derive the corresponding Cramér–Rao lower bound (CRLB). Simulation results show that the estimator is efficient in certain scenarios, outperforming existing approaches in the literature. Furthermore, we develop the estimator and the CRLB for equal and different noise variance at the receive antennas.
