This paper intends to address the dynamic repair scheduling of electric power transmission systems based on look-ahead strategy approximation. The objective is to minimize system functionality loss during the restoration stage after disruptive events. A series of decisions regarding which damaged component to be repaired has to be made successively considering currently available information of repair time and its uncertainty in the future. To achieve this goal, the dynamic repair scheduling problem is represented as a stochastic Markovian decision process (MDP). To overcome the computational complexity of MDP derived from exponentially growing state space, the cost-to-go function is approximated by a look-ahead strategy based on repair importance ordering. Stage-dependent coefficients are used to balance the approximated functionality loss at different decision stages. The tradeoff between the efficiency and optimality can be achieved by adjusting the look-ahead depth and the updating policy of look-ahead strategy. The IEEE-14 and 118-bus systems were used for performance evaluation of the proposed method and comparison with various approaches. Composite power system reliability evaluation is computationally time-consuming because the optimal power flow (OPF) with the least load curtailment is calculated for a large number of samples. Most current studies of probabilistic simulation methods focus on sampling techniques to improve the sampling efficiency and decrease the calculations of the OPF. This paper proposes a fast reliability evaluation method that accelerates the calculation of the OPF using multi-parametric linear programming (MPLP). In this paper, the sampled transmission line statuses are considered by the transmission line status dictionary (TLSD). We match the line status of each sample with the scenarios in the TLSD. For matching samples, the generation status and the sampled load are treated as MPLP parameters of the DC-OPF evaluation model. A dynamic learning algorithm is applied to solve the MPLP problem. Case studies are conducted on both IEEE Reliability Test Systems and a provincial power system in China. High intermittency in today's renewable-rich distribution systems, and the prohibitive cost of upgrading the system infrastructure, has rendered voltage instability a real concern for heavily loaded systems. The voltage instability of distribution systems can spread to the corresponding transmission grid, as proven by real-life incidents. Recent advances in energy storage systems (ESSs), however, have offered a viable means of enhancing the reliability and robustness of power systems. In this paper, the optimal placement, sizing, and operation of ESS devices in wind-intensive distribution power systems are studied. The objectives of this paper are to minimize the ESS size (power and energy), required to ensure a desired voltage stability margin (VSM), and to minimize the reactive power loss and reactive power import from the upstream network. Wind uncertainty has been accounted for through a risk-based stochastic optimization framework. Besides, active network management (ANM) tools, such as the tap position of on-load tap changers, modelled by using a new method, and reactive power capabilities of both ESS devices and wind farms, are used as additional means to reduce the required ESS size. The results show that the required ESS significantly increases with increase in the desired VSM. In the event of a single line to ground (SLG) fault in a non-effectively grounded distribution network, the faulted current is weak (only a few amperes or less) and the existing devices cannot accurately judge the faulted feeder. In this paper, we proposed algorithms that combine complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) and Hilbert transform to construct a multi-criteria comprehensive voting method. First, CEEMDAN algorithm is used to decompose the zero-sequence current to obtain the IMF1(the first intrinsic mode function) component and the Hilbert transform is used to calculate the instantaneous amplitude and instantaneous phase. Then, according to the three largest instantaneous amplitudes information, we constructed the characteristic instantaneous phase, characteristic instantaneous energy relative entropy and characteristic instantaneous zero sequence current polarity criteria from the phase, energy and polarity, respectively. Finally, we proposed a comprehensive voting method, which is specifically shown as follows: when two or more criteria show that one feeder or the bus has an SLG fault, it is voted that the feeder or the bus has an SLG fault. In contrast, if the judgment results of the three criteria are inconsistent, then we would return to recalculation and then vote. A novel traveling-wave-based fault-location algorithm for multiterminal transmission lines is introduced in this paper. Existing traveling-wave fault-location methods that based on the data measured at line terminals lack reliability and accuracy because time synchronization is needed, which brings error. To solve this problem, the complex structure of multiterminal power system is divided into several fault identification branches, current at the midpoint of each branched is measured, a novel fault-location algorithm is proposed, and the time synchronization error is eliminated. A line-based device is designed to measure the current at the midpoint of each branch. An accurate value of the traveling wave speed can be obtained by merely applying the data record in one measuring device. Thus, the fault-location accuracy is improved. The system model applied in this paper comprises one transmission line and two tapped lines, and the proposed method applies to networks with more terminals. DC ice melting is an effective technical method against ice disaster on transmission lines. To satisfy the demand for simultaneous de-icing and reactive power compensation for substations, this paper proposed a large-capacity low-cost DC deicer with reactive power compensation, which is mainly composed of rectifier transformer, Static Var Generator (SVG) and diode rectifier. In the proposed topology, SVG and diode rectifier share the rectifier transformer, but rectifier transformer capacity is not increased compared with a single deicer. This paper firstly presents the proposed topology and analyzes its advantages. Then, the rectifier transformer design is introduced, and the SVG control strategy is presented. Simulation results for the proposed device are presented, and an engineering devices with a capacity of 21.8 MVA developed for the 220 kV Fuchong substation is described. Independent system operators (ISOs) are responsible for the secure and economic operation of the power systems. Accordingly, ISOs should solve an optimal power flow to minimize the operating cost of a system while meeting the system's security constraints. However, transmission congestion could drastically limit more economical generating units from being dispatched in the power system operation. In this paper, a decentralized transmission switching is introduced in the operation of multi-area power systems to manage the congestion both on regional transmission lines and tie lines while considering credible contingencies. Our proposed methodology relies on a decentralized optimization methodology. Thus, regional control centers in areas would be able to locally manage the congestion within their regional networks as well as tie lines connecting them to their neighboring areas. An improved hybrid unified power flow controller (IHUPFC) is developed in this paper to control the power flow and increase the utilization rate of the existing transmission lines. The IHUPFC is composed of an improved “Sen” transformer (IST) and a small capacity unified power flow controller (UPFC). After a detailed introduction of the structure and voltage regulation performance of the IST, this paper derives the capacity relationship between the IST and the UPFC. Then, this paper introduces the technology of the IHUPFC in power flow regulation and transmission capability improvement. Besides, the advantages of the IHUPFC in performance and structure are analyzed. The IST has simpler structure and larger power flow control area than a “Sen” transformer, and the IHUPFC provides a continuous active and reactive power flow control. Centralized electricity markets currently do not optimize reactive power and voltage in the market clearing software. Voltage and local reliability (VLR) commitment requirements are mostly identified through out of market operational procedures. Failure to maintain VLR may incur voltage collapse, generation, transformer loss, or even blackout. Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) employs binary constraints, minimum/maximum generation constraints, interface constraints, and manual commitments to address VLR requirement in the market clearing process and ensure adequate commitment for reliability. This paper integrates binary VLR constraints in day-ahead security constrained unit commitment to improve market efficiency. However, VLR constraints may cause uplift cost, and sometimes the associated uplift cost can be significant. An uplift cost allocation method with the consideration of resources commitment reasons is developed in this paper. This paper describes a new method to represent single-phase overhead transmission lines (TL) under corona effect in electromagnetic transient simulation program. Based on Bergeron model and the scheme proposed by Dommel to represent transmission lines in Electromagnetic Transients Programs (EMT), a voltage-dependent line model (VDLM) was developed. This model can be represented through of an equivalent impedance network and easily combined with other components of the electric power system. To solve the nodal equations of the network a simple technique is proposed, which is suitable to calculate lightning overvoltages transients and avoids the necessity of iterative methods, increasing the efficiency of the algorithm. The proposed method was implemented in Matlab software, and the simulation's results were compared with field measurements to verify the accuracy of the model. This paper investigates the modal repulsion happened in the sub-synchronous resonance between a synchronous generator and series-compensated transmission line. The investigation is based on the closed-loop model of the series-compensated power system consisted of the torsional and electrical open-loop subsystems. Analytical explanation is presented to show how the SSO modal repulsion is formed as the result of moving close and apart between two open-loop SSO modes. Analysis is carried out to indicate that the peak of the SSO modal repulsion occurs when the two open-loop SSO modes from the torsional and electrical subsystem are closest to each other on the complex plane, which is referred to as the open-loop modal coupling. Estimation on the peak, i.e., the maximum damping degradation of the SSO modes, is derived in the paper. Subsequently, a method of open-loop modal analysis is proposed. Applications of the proposed method of open-loop modal analysis to study the SSOs caused by the DFIGs under the condition of the modal repulsion in the power system are demonstrated and evaluated by example power systems. The ability to identify electric shock in the human body is a crucial consideration in the design of touch/leakage protective devices. In this paper, the $\alpha$ -dispersion characteristics of electrical impedance in the human body are investigated based on the Cole–Cole model. An improved electric shock identification method is proposed accordingly. The effects of various factors (e.g., transition resistance and feeder reactance) on the accuracy and reliability are analyzed. Feasibility and effectiveness of the method are verified via numerical simulation. The results indicate that 1) $\alpha$-dispersion is an effective feature for distinguishing living or nonliving organisms; 2) the proposed method is robust and unaffected by transition resistance; and 3) the computational cost is low to satisfy standard leakage current protective device requirements. A new approach for identifying multiple line outages in electric power systems by using data obtained from synchrophasor measurements is proposed in this paper. A novelty of the proposal is the application of the sensitivity theory to the system's alternating current power flow model to determine the most likely contingency scenario, with not previous knowledge of the number of line outages. Since the proposal considers both voltage and current synchrophasor measurements, a set of observable lines is defined such that their outages are identified directly from those measurements. In this context, the more observed transmission lines there are, the smaller the search space for identifying potential outages in unobserved transmission lines. On the other hand, the detection problem of multiple-line outages is decomposed into the sequential uncovering of different single-line outages by using the concept of total derivative. The reduction of the search space and the decomposition of the multiple-line outages problem significantly reduce the computational burden of the proposed approach. Finally, numerical results demonstrate that the proposal presents a very satisfactory percentage of success for identifying the correct set of line outages, even when a limited number of PMUs is embedded in the system. System operators are required to serve the load in the most cost-effective way while maintaining the integrity of the system and heeding reliability requirements. In the day-ahead market, operators acquire reserves in an attempt to guarantee N-1 reliability; yet, reserve deliverability is not guaranteed. Prior research has shown that the use of transmission switching, or topology control, may help improve reserve deliverability. In this paper, transmission switching is used as a corrective mechanism to help the system achieve N-1-1 reliability, where not only has the system lost a single element, but also it experiences the loss of a second major element after an adjustment period. In an attempt to preserve N-1-1 reliability, for this paper, a day-ahead unit commitment model that acquires supplementary reserves is solved. The day-ahead market solution is then tested for N-1-1 reliability using contingency analysis models with and without transmission switching. The methodology can be employed at the day-ahead time stage to ensure the system has acquired sufficient supplemental reserves. The results demonstrate that not only can corrective transmission switching be beneficial post-contingency without inhibiting the ability to return to N-1 reliability, but it can also help obtain an N-1-1 reliable solution. The introduction of the microprocessor-based numerical relay in the 1980s resulted in multifunctional, multidimensional, communications-enabled complex protection systems for zone and system protection. The increasing capabilities of this technology created new unintended challenges: 1) complexity has increased and selecting coordinated settings is a challenge leading to occasional miscoordination; 2) protection functions still rely on a small number of measurements (typically three voltages and three currents) limiting the ability of protection functions to dependably identify the type of fault conditions; and 3) present approaches are incapable of dealing with hidden failures in the protection system. Statistically, 10% of protection operations are misoperations. This paper presents a new approach to protection that promises to eliminate the majority of the problems that lead to misoperations. The approach is described, demonstrated in the laboratory, compared to traditional protection functions and its application to a substation coordinated protection system capable of detecting and dealing with hidden failures is described. This paper applies a phasor-only state estimator (PSE) to a large power system consisting of two control regions, using synchrophasor data from 56 765/345/230 kV substations. Although the technique has been previously developed, this paper describes a topology processor to determine the redundant clusters of connected buses such that the PSE can be used in real time. This PSE allows corrections for phase biases, transformer taps, and current magnitude scaling. The ability to simultaneously solve the PSE for the two control regions is due to a PMU monitoring a tie-line between these two regions. The results show that with this method, the total vector errors of the measured voltage phasor data in these two control regions average to less than 0.5% under ambient conditions. This paper proposes a decentralized control based on static var compensator (SVC) devices to improve the frequency control of high voltage transmission systems. For a realistic structure preserving power system with voltage dependent loads, we propose a sufficient condition based on a strict Lyapunov energy function, which is utilized to design a nonlinear adaptive SVC controller. This controller only requires local bus measures and parameters. Furthermore, we also present an SVC with a conventional frequency droop controller. The performance of the two considered SVC control systems are evaluated on the well known IEEE New England 39-bus 10-machine power system and compared with conventional SVC controllers. Combined transmission and distribution systems (CoTDS) simulation for power systems requires development of algorithms and software that are numerically stable and at the same time accurately simulate dynamic events that can occur in practical systems. The time scales of simulation can be orders of magnitude apart making the combined simulation extremely challenging. This has led to increased research in applying co-simulation techniques for integrated simulation of the two systems. In this paper, two methods for dynamic co-simulation of CoTDS are proposed using parallel and series computation of the transmission system and distribution systems. The convergence of numerical methods in co-simulation is addressed from a fundamental mathematical perspective and the impact of the integration time-step is studied on proposed CoTDS dynamic co-simulation methods. Both these co-simulation methods are validated against total system simulation in a single time-domain simulation environment. The proposed CoTDS co-simulation method is also validated against commercial EMTP dynamic simulation. CoTDS dynamic co-simulation is further demonstrated on a New England 39-bus transmission system with ten load buses replaced by distribution systems including a 5780-node distribution system on one load bus for a detailed fault-induced delayed voltage recovery simulation study. Hardening components in transmission systems is a practice to improve system resilience against possible disturbances caused by natural disasters. In a power system with a very high penetration of renewable energy, the system hardening will be further complicated by the uncertainty and variability of renewable energy. In this paper, we study the transmission line hardening planing problem in the context of probabilistic power flows injected by the high penetration of renewable energy. We assume that the probabilistic information of renewable energy is incomplete and ambiguous and propose a data-driven approach to approximate the renewable uncertainty sets. We then extend the $N-1$ security criteria to multiple simultaneous contingencies and seek to prepare a hardening plan for the worst-case scenarios. A two-stage data-driven stochastic model is formulated by considering the joint worst-case wind output distribution and transmission line contingencies. Then, we apply the Column-and-Constraints generation method to solve the proposed model. To test the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conduct experiments on 24-bus and 118-bus test systems. We numerically show that the data-driven approach can effectively address the uncertainty ambiguity and the proposed approach can produce effective hardening plans that improve the system resilience. This paper presents a decision tree based high-speed intelligent scheme for series-compensated transmission line protection using differential phase angle of superimposed current (DPASC). The conventional distance relaying scheme undergoes many shortcomings in transmission line protection in the presence of series compensation devices. The proposed scheme calculates the differential phase angle of current signals using full cycle discrete Fourier transform. The DPASC for each phase is used as an input to the data mining model known as decision tree (DT). The DT is used to generate thresholds to detect and classify the faults since determination of robust thresholds is an important challenge in protective relay engineering. The proposed method has been tested for different operating modes of transmission line in SIMIULINK/MATLAB software. To meet the growing power demand of the future, utilities and researchers have considered the addition of dc circuits in existing transmission corridors. The previous research has focused on analyzing the field environment, steady state induction and the negative effects of induction in the hybrid transmission lines. The overhead ground wires (OHGWs) have been used only for improving the lightning performance of overhead lines (OHL). In this paper, the spatial position of OHGWs has been studied with the objective of minimizing the steady state induction between power conductors as well as poorly grounded metallic objects like railroads and fences present near the ac-dc OHL. Candidate space for placement of OHGWs having shielding failure rate of less than four is identified using the conventional electro-geometric model. The steady state induction in the power conductors and nearby metallic objects is studied as a function of position of OHGWs using electro-magnetic transient simulation. The results indicate a strong correlation between the height of OHGWs and magnitude of induced voltage in power conductors, and metallic objects underneath the transmission line. The conscious effort in placement of OHGWs can reduce the magnitude of induced voltages while ensuring adequate lightning performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Single-phase autoreclosing (SPAR) is among the alternatives for mitigating the many harmful effects that a line-to-ground fault in a transmission line (TL) may cause. This procedure basically consists of opening the compromised phase, waiting a preset time span (dead time), and recomposing the previously isolated phase. In the vast majority of SPAR implementations, the open phase switching proceeds with no guarantee of whether the TL is still faulted. Switching the open phase into a fault might represent a more severe threat to the system than simply disconnecting the TL in the first place. Hence, in an effort to ensure higher levels of operational reliability to SPAR, the present paper offers a new methodology to check the soundness of the open phase during the dead time before its reclosing. First, the method's fundamental concepts are exposed. Second, a huge number of steady-state tests are presented, for which both the system topology and its operative condition were varied. To conclude, the SPAR is simulated in the time-domain with the most critical condition found in the steady-state analysis. The paper demonstrates a power swing blocking and unblocking technique for a distance relay in a hybrid transmission line consisting of an overhead line and an underground cable using the Lissajous figure of the voltage and current signals. The tangents perpendicular to the axis of the current signal (denoted as TPI) on the Lissajous figure are found at exactly half cycle spacing during normal condition, while their spacings deviate from half cycle and are unequal during the power swing and a large number of TPIs are found within a small duration after fault initiation. This feature of the Lissajous figure is utilized to detect the power swing and the fault during the power swing. The proposed method is tested on a 5-machine 14-bus power system, simulated in electromagnetic transient program for symmetrical, asymmetrical, and nonideal faults, and found accurate. The faults during the power swing are detected within few milliseconds after fault initiation for different fault locations, fault resistances, load angles, fault inception times, and swing frequencies. Lightning electromagnetic fields can couple to overhead power transmission and distribution lines, causing serious effects to the power system. Lightning electromagnetic fields that couple to overhead lines have a nonuniform distribution along the line conductors. Therefore, to ensure the accuracy of the numerical calculation results, a large number of discretization points are needed along the line, which might dramatically increase the computation time since the evaluation of lightning electromagnetic fields in the presence of a lossy soil involves, in general,Sommerfeldintegrals, or, even in the case of a perfectly conducting ground, numerical integration along the channel. This paper proposes a new approach to address this problem. The proposed approach is based on the Agrawalet al. coupling model, in which the horizontal lightning electric field along the line is represented by the complex exponential functions in the frequency domain using the matrix pencil method. The method is highly efficient in terms of computation time since the lightning-induced response of the line can be solved semi-analytically. In this paper, a mathematically rigorous method is presented to calculate the impedance of FCLs based on a desirable change of short circuit currents. The method is found on the principle of superposition and can be easily incorporated into standard short circuit current calculations of power systems. The changes of the short circuit currents for each FCL installed are easily calculated without having to build a new impedance matrix for each new case. In addition, the method gives a clear graphical representation of the impact of the FCL on the power system taking advantage of the FCL impedance locus in the complex plane. The resultant plots provide valuable insight and information to utilities, system planners, and FCL manufacturers. FCL manufacturers can use these plots to identify the FCL impedance value and angle subject to the manufacturing and system constraints. The plots also allow utilities and system planners to compute the changes of fault current distribution caused by the FCL quickly and accurately. Results show that FCLs can increase short circuit currents in other branches. High-limiting FCLs may cause larger increase in short circuit currents of other branches and therefore a compromise may have to be made between fault current limitation and the maximum additional currents that are acceptable in other branches. An increasing number of extra-high-voltage (EHV) and ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission lines have motivated the need for ultra-high-speed line protection. Traveling-wave directional protection has the advantages of ultra-high-speed operation and high sensitivity, but its reliability is doubted due to its dependence on detecting the wave-heads of traveling waves and the limitation of the limited bandwidth of the coupling capacitive voltage transformer. Incremental-quantity directional protection is another ultra-high-speed alternative. Aiming at improving the reliability of a directional relay (namely the core of a directional protection) without compromising its ultra-high-speed operation, this paper proposes a novel ultra-high-speed directional relay based on correlation of incremental quantities. The incremental voltage and current within a specific window only consist of some specific fault-generated traveling waves. Therefore, the incremental voltage is in approximately direct proportion to the incremental current. The proportional coefficient is positive or negative in the case of a reverse fault or a forward fault, respectively. The correlation coefficient of the incremental voltage and current, processed by an averaging filter, is used to identify the fault direction. Extensive simulations verified that the proposed directional relay can serve as an ultra-high-speed and reliable directional relay for non-, shunt-, or series-compensated EHV/UHV transmission lines. A current sampled signal in a faulted transmission line can contain multiple dc components, namely a primary decaying dc component (DDC), a secondary DDC, an auxiliary DDC, and a bias DDC, and these may be due to a faulted line, current transformer, internal transformer, and analog-to-digital converter in the numerical relay, respectively. The intensity of the primary DDC is much higher than those of other DDCs. The elimination of the phasor-estimation error due to the primary DDC is the main issue in numerical relays, where the presence of other DDCs can deteriorate the phasor-estimation accuracy. This paper proposes a discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based method using a second-order finite-impulse response (FIR) notch filter to combine multiple DDCs as a certain DDC through DFT. The FIR notch filter is designed to minimize the calculation complexity of the identification. Phasor-estimation errors that are due to the multiple DDCs are corrected by identifying the combined DDC. The proposed method can be applied for both full-cycle DFT (FCDFT) and half-cycle DFT. The feasibility of the proposed FCDFT-based method is compared with those of conventional FCDFT-based methods using simulations on DDCs, harmonics, noise, and a faulted transmission line. Energization overvoltages are among the severest overvoltages stressing insulations of EHV power system components. Since these overvoltages have a statistical nature, the insulation level should be determined with the use of a statistical approach by which the distribution of overvoltages is calculated. Literature has properly studied the distribution of energization overvoltages in purely overhead line (OHL) or cable systems, but such a study is not available for hybrid systems consisting of both OHLs and cables. It is expected that the overvoltage distributions change substantially when both OHLs and cables are used in a transmission line. This paper tackles this issue by analyzing the overvoltage distributions due to the energization of a 380 kV hybrid OHL-cable circuit, in which the cable length is variable. The study includes various sensitivity analyses to find out the impact of system parameters and topology on overvoltages. By the statistical analysis, it has been discovered that energization overvoltages of a hybrid OHL–cable circuit are higher than those of a fully-cable circuit and very likely lower than those of a fully-OHL circuit with the same transmission lengths. It is commonly assumed that power swings are symmetrical phenomena that impose almost identical effects on the three-phase voltages and currents of the power system. However, there is another type of power swings which is asymmetrical and occurs mainly during single-pole tripping. In the nowadays heavily loaded power systems, the likelihood of occurrence of this phenomenon is increased considerably. Although the effects of symmetrical power swings on distance protection are widely analyzed in the literature, asymmetrical power swings have been less studied so far. This paper focuses on this type of power swings and their effects on distance protection. Besides, two new techniques are proposed to detect faults during asymmetrical power swings and enhance performance of power swing blocking schemes. The first technique is based on the rate of change of zero sequence current, while the second one is based on the magnitudes of voltage and current in each phase, as well as their relative phase angle. In this paper, two discretization techniques are combined to present a coupled electro-thermal model for the transient analysis of gas-insulated transmission lines (GILs). The analysis of the thermal problem is based on the volume-element-method, representing heat transfer equations on a 2-D axisymmetric GIL model and determining temperature distribution over space and time. For the electrical formulation, the finite-difference time-domain method is adopted considering constant parameters calculated at the frequency of interest. The coupled electro-thermal problem in the case of transient conditions is solved by means of a bidirectional procedure. Nowadays, the analysis of the lightning performance of high-voltage (HV) underground sections has become increasingly important, thanks to their increasing usage with overhead transmission lines. In this way, the objective of this paper is to investigate the sensitivity of the overvoltages, at the terminal of underground cables (UCs), due to the incidence of negative lightning flashes at the shield wire or the tower top. It is done by means of different representations of the grounding behavior, different points of lightning incidence, different values of soil resistivity, and considering or not the variation of the soil electrical parameters with frequency. It is observed that a reliable investigation on lightning overvoltages is important and it must consider a suitable representation of the grounding behavior. An improper modeling can lead to nonrepresentative results. In this way, it is highlighted how the frequency dependence of the soil parameters influences the results in many different situations. For long distances from the UCs and low soil resistivity regions, all the grounding models produce similar results. On the other hand, for regions with high soil resistivities, the use of a proper model for the tower grounding is important, since the discrepancies between the results produced considering or not the dependence of the soil parameters with frequency become substantial. The inclusion of the grounding behavior with frequency allows to obtain reliable simulations of the transient behavior of the insulated cables, which constitute the underground section under study. Visualization of electric power transmission systems centers on the one-line diagram, which is a simplified logical depiction of the circuit's connections and elements. Such a graph drawing is useful for supporting the study, analysis, and presentation of power system data. This paper proposes an automated way to generate one-line diagrams, given substation identifiers with geographic tags and the system bus-branch model. Two approaches to drawing the substations are given: a force-directed approach and a greedy approach, which in different ways modify the position and size of substations as drawn. For transmission line routing between substations, a Delaunay-based method is employed, which segments the transmission line drawings to avoid overlapping with substations and other lines. These methods show good visual properties in spacing, geographic context, relatively straight lines, and computational speed. To reduce the computational burden of capacity expansion models, power system operations are commonly accounted for in these models using representative time periods of the planning horizon such as hours, days, or weeks. However, the validity of these time-period aggregation approaches to determine the capacity expansion plan of future power systems is arguable, as they fail to capture properly the mid-terms dynamics of renewable power generation and to model accurately the operation of electricity storage. In this paper, we propose a new time-period clustering method that overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks by maintaining the chronology of the input time series throughout the whole planning horizon. Thus, the proposed method can correctly assess the economic value of combining renewable power generation with interday storage devices. Numerical results from a test case based on the European electricity network show that our method provides more efficient capacity expansion plans than existing methods while requiring similar computational needs. This paper proposes a dynamic game-based maintenance scheduling mechanism for the asset owners of the natural gas grid and the power grid by using a bilevel approach. In the upper level, the asset owners of the natural gas grid and the power grid schedule maintenance to maximize their own revenues. This level is modeled as a dynamic game problem, which is solved by the backward induction algorithm. In the lower level, the independent system operator dispatches the system to minimize the loss of power load and natural gas load in consideration of the system operating conditions under maintenance plans from the asset owners in the upper level. This is modeled as a mixed integer linear programming problem. For the model of the natural gas grid, a piecewise linear approximation associated with the big-M approach is used to transform the original nonlinear model into the mixed integer linear model. This paper proposes an optimal strategy for regulating active-power flows in electric power systems based on sparsity-promoting linear–quadratic–Gaussian (LQG) control. The proposed method relies on the mapping of nodal active- and reactive-power injections to line flows, which are obtained via a measurement-based approach. Building on this, we outline a combined sparsity-promoting linear–quadratic regulator and Kalman-filter design. The optimal controller sparsity is identified using the alternating direction method of multipliers, which strikes a balance between feedback controller sparsity and the closed-loop dynamic performance. With this, we optimally dispatch generators and controllable loads to achieve desired line flows while ensuring zero steady-state frequency offset. This paper presents the effectiveness of a microgrid (MG) in a distribution system. The combined heat and power (CHP) system is used to enhance the overall efficiency of the power system. Microturbines are used for CHP operation in this paper. The various methods of control of the MG are discussed. A simple low-cost model is proposed for MG based on frequency droop control for active power generation. The proposed model can be used in plug-and-play mode of operation of the MG. Power router technology is maturing to the point of becoming a cost-effective enabler of increased transmission asset utilization. Power routers can enable a desirable increase in control of power systems, especially as infrastructure ages and degrades. This paper presents a formal extension to the traditional security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) algorithm, named flexible security-constrained optimal power flow (FSCOPF), which utilizes power router control in the post-contingency timeframe. The operational improvement is enabled by the fast-response capability of FACTS-based power routers to change setpoints in response to power system contingencies. The FSCOPF algorithm, developed in this paper, allows for power routers to be used as a real-time dispatchable resource. The activation of under frequency load shedding (UFLS) is the last automated action against the severe frequency drops in order to rebalance the system. In this paper, the setting parameters of a multistage load shedding plan are obtained and optimized using a discretized model of dynamic system frequency response. The uncertainties of system parameters including inertia time constant, load damping, and generation deficiency are taken into account. The proposed UFLS model is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming optimization problem to minimize the expected amount of load shedding. The activation of rate-of-change-of-frequency relays as the anti-islanding protection of distributed generators is considered. The Monte Carlo simulation method is utilized for modeling the uncertainties of system parameters. The results of probabilistic UFLS are then utilized to design four different UFLS strategies. Accurate local bus frequency is essential for power system frequency regulation provided by distributed energy sources, flexible loads, and among others. This paper proposes a robust frequency divider (RFD) for online bus frequency estimation. Our RFD is independent of the load models, and the knowledge of swing equation parameters, transmission line parameters, and local Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) measurements at each generator terminal bus is sufficient. In addition, it is able to handle several types of data quality issues, such as measurement noise, gross measurement errors, cyberattacks, and measurement losses. Furthermore, the proposed RFD contains the decentralized estimation of local generator rotor speeds and the centralized bus frequency estimation, which resembles the structure of the decentralized/hierarchical control scheme. This enables RFD for very large-scale system applications. Specifically, we decouple each generator from the rest of the system by treating metered real power injection as inputs and the frequency measurements provided by PMU as outputs; then a robust unscented Kalman filter based dynamic state estimator is proposed for local generator rotor speed estimation; finally, these rotor speeds are transmitted to control center for bus frequency estimation. For economic reasons, expansions of transmission networks are based on a compromise between capital cost and security of power system operation. At the same time, the power system must withstand typical highly likely contingencies. Various emergency state control systems, also called special protections, prevent emergencies following less likely contingencies. This paper describes overloads emergency state control (OLEC) used for the alleviation of overload in transmission networks near a power plant. Such control uses the functions of automated power reduction of generating units and has been implemented for a large steam power plant. The uncertainty and variability associated with stochastic resources coupled with the constantly changing system operating conditions introduce new challenges to power systems. Smart, well-designed reserve policies are needed to assist the operators in maintaining system reliability. This paper presents a reserve response set model, which improves upon existing deterministic models. The proposed model aims to address the allocation and deliverability issues associated with reserves by using reserve response set policies and by modeling the predicted post-contingency effects of nodal reserve deployment on critical transmission elements. The performance of the proposed reserve model is compared against contemporary deterministic programs and an extensive-form stochastic program. The results show that the proposed reserve model outperforms the contemporary models and improves the deliverability of reserves post-contingency at reduced costs. A new type of overvoltage phenomenon in half-wave length transmission line (HWLL) is caused by power fluctuation (PF). This paper defines this phenomenon as PF overvoltage (PFO), which belongs to the temporary overvoltage category. The amplitude of PFO is generally high, the duration time is long, and the coverage on HWLLs is wide in the case of single-phase transient fault, when the transmission power is large. This will pose a new problem for ultrahigh voltage (UHV) half-wave length ac transmission (HWACT). First, we analyze the unique transmission characteristics of HWLLs with incident and reflected wave theory. Next, according to the application scenario of HWACT in China, we construct a plant-to-grid UHV half-wave length transmission system. Then, based on a large number of electromagnetic transient simulations on the system using electromagnetic program, we obtain the PF characteristics of the UHV HWLL. Furthermore, the mechanism and characteristics of PFO are described by the characteristics of transmission and PF. Finally, we propose the mitigation measures of PFO for UHV HWLL, which include configuring metal oxide arresters differentially along HWLLs, closing high-speed grounding switches during the fault period, generator tripping after a fault, and shortening the reclosing time. This paper presents a new wavelet-based busbar differential protection algorithm, named as 87BW function. The instantaneous current-based differential protection fundamentals are taken into account and the well-known 1-out-of-1 and 2-out-of-2 tripping logics are mapped into the wavelet domain. Operating and restraint wavelet coefficients energy of currents are computed, regarding station configuration and bus zones boundaries. Thereby, the proposed 87BW function can be properly used in both static and dynamic busbar configuration. Its performance was evaluated through EMTP-based simulations of faults in a 230 kV power substation with double bus single breaker configuration. The obtained results reveal it provides ultra-high-fast trip for internal and evolving external-to-internal faults, guaranteeing security for normal through-load and external faults as well, even in the case of early and severe current transformer saturation. Uncertainties associated with wind power integration challenge the operational adequacy of conventional power systems. A set of wind power ramp limits (WPRLs) is proposed in this paper to evaluate the operational adequacy of power systems with high wind power penetration and to provide operating references to wind farms in the form of a ramp power limit (RPL) and ramp rate limit (RRL). The RPL is used to evaluate the minimum and maximum allowable generation of a wind farm by considering the power reserve capacities of generators and power flow constraints of transmission lines. A robust second-order cone programming RPLs formulation with AC power flow constraints and a column-and-constraint generation based solution method are proposed to maximize the total operating range of all wind farms. Meanwhile, a Pareto optimality based RPLs evaluation approach is proposed to handle the coupled relationship among the operating ranges of the wind farms to achieve a balanced RPLs solution for each wind farm. The RRL is used to evaluate the most rapid wind power ramp behavior that can be handled by system frequency regulation without exceeding the designated frequency range. A comprehensive criterion is proposed to evaluate the RRLs by considering primary and secondary frequency regulation. The interdependence between natural gas and electric power systems is becoming increasingly tight, as the share of natural gas-fired units increases. Within this context, this paper addresses the coordinated expansion planning of natural gas and power systems. We analyze the tradeoff of building natural gas-related facilities (e.g., natural gas pipelines and natural gas-fired generation units) versus electric-power-related facilities (e.g., transmission lines and other generation units). We use a two-stage stochastic optimization model that provides an appropriate balance between accuracy and computational tractability and represents uncertainty pertaining to electricity and natural gas demands. We show the importance of representing uncertainty by computing the value of stochastic solution, which is significant. We analyze the functioning of the model through a small example and a case study based on the IEEE 118-bus system. Computational results confirm the need for detailed representation of both the natural gas and power systems to achieve investment decisions that are well coordinated and optimal. A large existing delta-wye step-down transformer was proposed to be temporarily used as a step-up transformer and energized from the low-voltage wye winding by multiple small diesel generators (DGs) to accelerate commissioning activities by utilizing existing temporary generation. This paper is a case study that discusses the associated power system constraints created by this proposed modified power system configuration. The modified power system configuration resulted in an ungrounded high-voltage (HV) system created by the transformer's delta winding, which required HV system modifications to create a grounded system. Additionally, the existing power system had generation and load flow constraints and had protection and coordination constraints that needed to be maintained to supply the existing loads. Also, the inrush current resulting from the transformer energization needed to be evaluated and compared with the generator's short time current rating. Finally, modifications to the protection and coordination settings resulting from the modified power system configuration and confirmation that the arc flash incident energy levels were acceptable after implementation of modified settings were required. In this paper, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is proposed to overcome the problems of the existing unified power flow controllers (UPFCs) and to provide the dynamic power flow control through transmission lines. Although many studies have been focusing on developing UPFC control strategies for power flow control through simulation, there is a lack of experimental validation of different UPFC controller and its performance in real-time operation. In order to investigate the performance of the proposed FLC based UPFC, a laboratory prototype has been developed using two 6-pulse converters. The six-bus power system network model is chosen as test system. The shunt and series controller for both PI and FLC-based UPFC prototype are designed in MATLAB/Simulink using Speedgoat performance real-time target machine. The UPFC prototype is tested on six-bus power system network model to verify its capability. The results revealed that the UPFC prototype had successfully controlled the power flow dynamically in transmission line with enhanced accuracy.
