Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems are of interest for meeting the expected demand for higher data rates and lower delays in future wireless packet data systems. In such systems, it is optimal to simultaneously transmit to multiple users compared with a single user in a single-input-single-output system. In addition, multicarrier systems are of interest to combat frequency-selective fading that is experienced over the larger bandwidth that these future broadband systems will use. The use of dirty paper coding further complicates the matter, because the order in which the users are encoded will affect the rates that they can achieve. A well-designed cross-layer scheduling algorithm must take into account the multiple dimensions of this resource-allocation problem and other quality-of-service (QoS) parameters to fully exploit the communications channel. The scheduling problem is often expressed in terms of optimizing some utility function. Unfortunately, the search space for this optimization problem is extremely large, which prohibits an optimal exhaustive search. To this end, we investigate the use of genetic algorithms to reduce the complexity of the scheduling. This paper builds upon prior work that implements scheduling via genetic algorithms in the context of single-carrier systems using zero-forcing beamforming (ZFB). In this paper, we investigate how the genetic algorithm can be adapted to account for the effect of encoding order on the scheduling and how the scheduling can be extended to a multicarrier system. In particular, we investigate the maximum throughput and proportionally fair scheduling criteria. We demonstrate that the performance of the genetic algorithm is near optimal compared with an exhaustive search at a greatly reduced computational complexity. We consider precoder design for maximizing the weighted sum rate (WSR) of successive zero-forcing dirty paper coding (SZF-DPC). For this problem, the existing precoder designs often assume a sum power constraint (SPC) and rely on the singular value decomposition (SVD). The SVD-based designs are known to be optimal but require high complexity. We first propose a low-complexity optimal precoder design for SZF-DPC under SPC, using the QR decomposition. Then, we propose an efficient numerical algorithm to find the optimal precoders subject to per-antenna power constraints (PAPCs). To this end, the precoder design for PAPCs is formulated as an optimization problem with a rank constraint on the covariance matrices. A well-known approach to solve this problem is to relax the rank constraints and solve the relaxed problem. Interestingly, for SZF-DPC, we are able to prove that the rank relaxation is tight. Consequently, the optimal precoder design for PAPCs is computed by solving the relaxed problem, for which we propose a customized interior-point method that exhibits a superlinear convergence rate. Two suboptimal precoder designs are also presented and compared to the optimal ones. We consider transmission over the ergodic fading multiple-antenna broadcast (MIMO-BC) channel with partial channel state information at the transmitter and full information at the receiver. Over the equivalent non-fading channel, capacity has recently been shown to be achievable using transmission schemes that were designed for the "dirty paper" channel. We focus on a similar "fading paper" model. The evaluation of the fading paper capacity is difficult to obtain. We confine ourselves to the linear-assignment capacity, which we define, and use convex analysis methods to prove that its maximizing distribution is Gaussian. We compare our fading-paper transmission to an application of dirty paper coding that ignores the partial state information and assumes the channel is fixed at the average fade. We show that a gain is easily achieved by appropriately exploiting the information. We also consider a cooperative upper bound on the sum-rate capacity as suggested by Sato. Dirty paper coding (DPC) scheme is the capacity achieving transmission technique in multiuser MIMO downlink channels. As a suboptimal solution to DPC, successive zero-forcing DPC (SZF-DPC) has been proposed recently. The zero-interference constraint in designing the precoding matrices limits the number of supportable users. In this correspondence, we propose three low-complexity suboptimal user scheduling algorithms to exploit the multiuser diversity gain in SZF-DPC as the number of users grows. The first algorithm greedily maximizes the true sum rate. The second algorithm is based on eigenvalues. The third algorithm relies on the diagonal elements of the effective channel matrix since eigenvalues and diagonal entries of a Hermitian matrix have a strong relationship. Simulation results show that the proposed scheduling algorithms can obtain a significant fraction of sum rate of the optimal solution. Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is intended to supplant legacy (optical) bar code scanning technology found in many logistic and retail applications. RFID is distinguished by inexpensive, low power and compact form factor tags, whose longevity and efficacy are predicated on using passive communication techniques and on-tag power harvesting. Such tags employ backscatter modulation, which does not require any active RF components. As a result, backscatter has become an attractive design choice for short-range communications in power constrained wireless sensor networking scenarios. The purpose of this work is two-fold. First, it aims to expose backscatter communication as an emerging topic to a communication systems-theoretic audience. Since backscatter modulation and on-tag power harvesting efficiency are coupled, it is necessary to re-examine notions of power and spectral efficiency from an energy-constraint perspective; this leads to novel coded modulation schemes for future RFID systems. Further, we investigate RFID MIMO systems where the channel fading encountered has different statistics than the classical Rayleigh fading model. For multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system, transmitter utilizes a pre-equalizer based precoding to cancel inter-stream interference for parallel transmission with the aid of accurate feedback of channel state information (CSI) from all receivers. The correct power scaling factor, which normalizes the symbols power of precoding to be a constant one, is required at each receiver. Due to CSI error and limitation of feed-forward link, the received inaccurate power scaling factor will shrink or expand the received constellation points which severely degrades the performance of MIMO system. In this paper, using nonlinear vector perturbation (VP) and linear zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, we analyze the impact of inaccurate power scaling factor on the performance of a MIMO precoding system. The analyzed results show that the mismatched modulo size from inaccurate power scaling factor severely degrades the performance of the VP system, especially for high order M-QAM modulation. In addition, the performance degradation is strongly related with the distribution of representation points for each M-QAM symbol. For linear ZF precoding, the performance loss from the shrinked or expanded constellation points is severe for system using high order M-QAM. In addition, to alleviate the performance degradation, we propose a VP system using partial perturbation points (PPP). By limiting the region of redundant points with vector perturbation for partial M-QAM symbols, the performance degradation due to the inaccurate power scaling factor can be alleviated. The paper studies a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multi-user uplink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with imperfect hardware. At the RIS, the paper considers phase noise, while at the base station, the paper takes into consideration the radio frequency impairments and low-resolution analog-to-digital converters. The paper derives approximate expressions for the ergodic achievable rate in closed forms under Rician fading channels. For the cases of infinite numbers of antennas and infinite numbers of reflecting elements, asymptotic data rates are derived to provide new design insights. The derived power scaling laws indicate that while guaranteeing a required system performance, the transmit power of the users can be scaled down at most by the factor $\frac{1}{M}$ when $M$ goes infinite, or by the factor $\frac{1}{MN}$ when $M$ and $N$ go infinite, where $M$ is the number of antennas and $N$ is the number of the reflecting units. Furthermore, an optimization algorithm is proposed based on the genetic algorithm to solve the phase shift optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the sum rate of the system. This paper introduces a novel approach of utilizing the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for joint data modulation and signal beamforming in a multi-user downlink cellular network by leveraging the idea of backscatter communication. We present a general framework in which the RIS, referred to as modulating intelligent surface (MIS) in this paper, is used to: $i$) beamform the signals for a set of users whose data modulation is already performed by the base station (BS), and at the same time, $ii$) embed the data of a different set of users by passively modulating the deliberately sent carrier signals from the BS to the RIS. To maximize each user’s spectral efficiency, a joint non-convex optimization problem is formulated under the sum minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion. Alternating optimization is used to divide the original joint problem into two tasks of: $i$) separately optimizing the MIS phase-shifts for passive beamforming along with data embedding for the BS- and MIS-served users, respectively, and $ii$) jointly optimizing the active precoder and the receive scaling factor for the BS- and MIS-served users, respectively. While the solution to the latter joint problem is found in closed-form using traditional optimization techniques, the optimal phase-shifts at the MIS are obtained by deriving the appropriate optimization-oriented vector approximate message passing (OOVAMP) algorithm. Moreover, the original joint problem is solved under both ideal and practical constraints on the MIS phase shifts, namely, the unimodular constraint and assuming each MIS element to be terminated by a variable reactive load. The proposed MIS-assisted scheme is compared against state-of-the-art RIS-assisted wireless communication schemes and simulation results reveal that it brings substantial improvements in terms of system throughput while supporting a much higher number of users. This paper investigates the optimal signal detection problem with a particular interest in large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The problem is NP-hard and can be solved optimally by searching the shortest path on the decision tree. Unfortunately, the existing optimal search algorithms often involve prohibitively high complexities, which indicates that they are infeasible in large-scale MIMO systems. To address this issue, we propose a general heuristic search algorithm, namely, hyper-accelerated tree search (HATS) algorithm. The proposed algorithm employs a deep neural network (DNN) to estimate the optimal heuristic, and then use the estimated heuristic to speed up the underlying memory-bounded search algorithm. This idea is inspired by the fact that the underlying heuristic search algorithm reaches the optimal efficiency with the optimal heuristic function. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reaches almost the optimal bit error rate (BER) performance in large-scale systems, while the memory size can be bounded. In the meanwhile, it visits nearly the fewest tree nodes. This indicates that the proposed algorithm reaches almost the optimal efficiency in practical scenarios, and thereby it is applicable for large-scale systems. In the scalar dirty multiple-access channel, in addition to Gaussian noise, two additive interference signals are present, each known non-causally to a single transmitter. It was shown by Philosof et al. that for strong interferences, an independent identically distributed ensemble of codes does not achieve the capacity region. Rather, a structured-codes approach was presented that was shown to be optimal in the limit of high signal-to-noise ratios, where the sum capacity is dictated by the minimal (“bottleneck”) channel gain. In this paper, we consider the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) variant of this setting. In order to incorporate structured codes in this case, one can utilize matrix decompositions that transform the channel into effective parallel scalar dirty multiple-access channels. This approach, however, suffers from a “bottleneck” effect for each effective scalar channel and, therefore, the achievable rates strongly depend on the chosen decomposition. It is shown that a recently proposed decomposition, where the diagonals of the effective channel matrices are equal up to a scaling factor, is optimal at high signal-to-noise ratios, under an equal rank assumption. A zero forcing (ZF) assisted single layer beamforming is developed for spatial modulation (SM) and space shift keying (SSK) modulation multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, termed as SZF-SM/SZF-SSK, to achieve both transmit beamforming and receive diversity gain in this paper. Specifically, the proposed SZF-SM/SZF-SSK maps part of the bits to spatial domain, simultaneously forming a ZF precoding assisted single layer data both in multiple input single output (MISO) and MIMO systems, that differs greatly from conventional ZF beamforming assisted MIMO systems. With MISO configuration, the ZF precoder of SZF-SM/SZF-SSK converges to the maximum ratio transmission (MRT), achieving only the transmit beamforming gain. With MIMO configuration, SZF-SM/SZF-SSK tranceiver could be further modified along with the MIMO channel to achieve single layer transmission and joint detection, attaining both the transmit beamforming and receive diversity gain in SM-MIMO system. The theoretical analysis and the simulation results of the proposed SZF-SM/SZF-SSK with MISO and MIMO configurations are presented in this paper respectively, which show an attractive performance gain over the conventional SM/SSK. Compared with the conventional ZF beamforming assisted MIMO systems and some other CSI assisted SM-MIMO schemes, the proposed scheme exhibits better performance, especially under highly correlated MIMO channels, rendering a new and practical way to achieve low rank MIMO transmission with good performance and high data rate. In this paper, we design receivers for filter bank multicarrier-based (FBMC-based) massive MIMO considering practical aspects such as channel estimation and equalization. In particular, we propose a spectrally efficient pilot structure and a channel estimation technique in the uplink to jointly estimate all the users’ channel impulse responses. We mathematically analyze our proposed channel estimator and find the statistics of the channel estimation errors. These statistics are incorporated into our proposed equalizers to deal with the imperfect channel state information (CSI) effect. We revisit the channel equalization problem for FBMC-based massive MIMO, address the shortcomings of the existing equalizers in the literature, and make them more applicable to practical scenarios. The proposed receiver in this paper consists of two stages. In the first stage, a linear combining of the received signals at the base station (BS) antennas provides a coarse channel equalization and removes any multiuser interference. In the second stage, a per subcarrier fractionally spaced equalizer (FSE) takes care of any residual distortion of the channel for the user of interest. We propose an FSE design based on the equivalent channel at the linear combiner output. This enables the applicability of our proposed technique to small and/or distributed antenna setups such as cell-free massive MIMO. This paper studies a multiple-input–single-output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) featuring simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, where a multiantenna access point (AP) delivers both information and energy via radio signals to multiple single-antenna receivers simultaneously, and each receiver implements either information decoding (ID) or energy harvesting (EH). In particular, pseudorandom sequences that are a priori known and therefore can be cancelled at each ID receiver are used as the energy signals, and the information-theoretically optimal dirty paper coding is employed for the information transmission. We characterize the capacity region for ID receivers by solving a sequence of weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization (WSRMax) problems subject to a maximum sum-power constraint for the AP, and a set of minimum harvested power constraints for individual EH receivers. The problem corresponds to a new form of WSRMax problem in MISO-BC with combined maximum and minimum linear transmit covariance constraints (MaxLTCCs and MinLTCCs), which differs from the celebrated capacity region characterization problem for MISO-BC under a set of MaxLTCCs only and is challenging to solve. By extending the general BC–multiple-access-channel duality, which is only applicable to WSRMax problems with MaxLTCCs, and applying the ellipsoid method, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to solve this problem globally optimally. Furthermore, we also propose two suboptimal algorithms with lower complexity by assuming that the information and energy signals are designed separately. Cell-free massive MIMO is one of the key technologies for future wireless communications, in which users are simultaneously and jointly served by all access points (APs). In this paper, we investigate the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimation of effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. To facilitate the theoretical analysis, only single measurement vector (SMV) based MMSE estimation is considered in this paper, i.e., the MMSE estimation is performed based on the received pilot signals at each AP separately. Inspired by the decoupling principle of replica symmetric postulated MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) non-zero components, we develop the corresponding decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with independent and non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d.) non-zero components, which plays a key role in the theoretical analysis of SMV based MMSE estimation of the effective channel coefficients in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity. Subsequently, based on the obtained decoupling principle of MMSE estimation, likelihood ratio test and the optimal fusion rule, we perform user activity detection based on the received pilot signals at only one AP, or cooperation among the entire set of APs for centralized or distributed detection. Via theoretical analysis, we show that the error probabilities of both centralized and distributed detection tend to zero when the number of APs tends to infinity while the asymptotic ratio between the number of users and pilots is kept constant. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of oracle estimation in cell-free massive MIMO systems with massive connectivity via random matrix theory. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the potential performance loss of SMV based MMSE estimation, which does not employ the correlation between the received pilot signals at different APs, the multiple measurement vector (MMV) based MMSE estimation, i.e., joint MMSE estimation with pilot signals from all APs, is analyzed via numerical results. Numerical analysis shows that the theoretical analyze with our decoupling principle for the SMV based MMSE estimation of sparse signal vectors with i.n.i.d. non-zero components matches well with the numerical results. This paper studies the device activity detection problem in a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, in which the active devices transmit signature sequences to multiple base stations (BSs) that are connected to a central unit (CU), and the BSs cooperate across multiple cells to detect the active devices based on the sample covariance matrices at the BSs. This paper demonstrates the importance of exploiting the knowledge of channel large-scale fadings in this cooperative detection setting through a phase transition analysis, which characterizes the length of signature sequences needed for successful device activity detection in the massive MIMO regime. It is shown that when the large-scale fadings are known, the phase transition for the multi-cell scenario is approximately the same as that of a single-cell system. In this case, the length of the signature sequences required for reliable activity detection in the multi-cell system can be made to be independent of the number of cells through cooperation, in contrast to the case where the large-scale fadings are not known. Further, this paper considers the case in which the fronthaul links between the BSs and the CU have capacity constraints and proposes a novel cooperation scheme based on the quantization of preliminary detection results at the BSs and the reconstruction of the sample covariance matrices at the CU. Multiple signal classification (MUSIC) has been widely applied in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receivers for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. To reduce the cost of radio frequency (RF) chains at millimeter-wave bands, hybrid analog-digital structure has been adopted in massive MIMO transceivers. In this situation, received signals at the antennas are unavailable to the digital receiver, and as a consequence, the spatial covariance matrix (SCM), which is essential in MUSIC algorithm, cannot be obtained using traditional sample average approach. Based on our previous work, we propose a novel algorithm for SCM reconstruction in hybrid massive MIMO systems with multiple RF chains in this paper. By switching the analog beamformers to a group of predetermined DOAs, SCM can be reconstructed through the solutions of a set of linear equations. Furthermore, a low-complexity algorithm, as well as a careful selection of the predetermined DOAs, will be also presented in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can reconstruct the SCM accurately so that MUSIC algorithm can be well used in hybrid massive MIMO systems with multiple RF chains. The cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) aims to provide uniform quality of service (QoS) for all users, and can be used in small-area scenarios such as indoor industrial networks. This paper studies the CFmMIMO system for indoor industrial scenarios. Firstly, an access point (AP) grouping based hierarchical network topology is proposed. Based on this, we propose an effective AP selection method. To reduce pilot contamination, a pilot assignment scheme based on inspection robot (IR) location is proposed. Considering the high reliability requirement of industrial data transmission, the power control and backhaul combining are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). The scalability of the proposed CFmMIMO system is analyzed, and a scalable power control method is proposed. The simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the AP selection method, pilot assignment scheme, and the joint optimization algorithm for power control and backhaul combining. In conventional multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems with frequency division duplexing (FDD), channel acquisition and precoder optimization processes have been designed separately although they are highly coupled. This paper studies an end-to-end design of downlink MU-MIMO systems which include pilot sequences, limited feedback, and precoding. To address this problem, we propose a novel deep learning (DL) framework which jointly optimizes the feedback information generation at users and the precoder design at a base station (BS). Each procedure in the MU-MIMO systems is replaced by intelligently designed multiple deep neural networks (DNN) units. At the BS, a neural network generates pilot sequences and helps the users obtain accurate channel state information. At each user, the channel feedback operation is carried out in a distributed manner by an individual user DNN. Then, another BS DNN collects feedback information from the users and determines the MIMO precoding matrices. A joint training algorithm is proposed to optimize all DNN units in an end-to-end manner. In addition, a training strategy which can avoid retraining for different network sizes for a scalable design is proposed. Mobile edge computing (MEC) and millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are capable of significantly reducing the network's delay and enhancing its capacity. In this paper we investigate a mmWave and device-to-device (D2D) assisted MEC system, in which user A carries out some computational tasks and shares the results with user B with the aid of a base station (BS). We assume partial offloading model and the task can be partitioned into two portions: the first part is computed locally at user A, while the second part is transmitted to the BS and computed by the MEC server. The computational results are then sent to user B through a D2D link and via the link from the BS to user B, respectively. To support computation offloading, both the users and the BS are equipped with multiple antennas and employ analog and digital (A/D) hybrid beamforming. Moreover, we propose a novel two-timescale joint hybrid beamforming and task allocation algorithm to reduce the system latency whilst cut down the required signaling overhead. Specifically, the high-dimensional analog beamforming matrices are updated in a frame-based manner based on the channel state information (CSI) samples, where each frame consists of a number of time slots, while the low-dimensional digital beamforming matrices and the offloading ratio are optimized more frequently relied on the low-dimensional effective channel matrices in each time slot. A stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) based algorithm is developed to design the long-term analog beamforming matrices. As for the short-term variables, the digital beamforming matrices are optimized relying on the innovative penalty-concave convex procedure (penalty-CCCP) for handling the mmWave non-linear transmit power constraint, and the offloading ratio can be obtained via the derived closed-form solution. Massive MIMO is a promising air interface technology for 5G wireless communications. Such antenna systems offer capabilities to utilize channel correlations to create beams suitable for user specific transmissions. Most of the prior research is devoted to user-specific transmission in such systems, where a narrow beam is formed towards a user to improve its reception. Meanwhile, public-channel transmission to multiple users at once by means of broad beams has been understudied. In this paper, we introduce the concept of array-size invariant (ASI) beamforming, enabling generation of broad beams from very large antenna arrays where all elements are transmitting at maximum power. The ASI technique offers the possibility to achieve a perfectly flat array factor by exploiting the additional degree of freedom coming from the dual-polarization beamforming. Millimeter-wave vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems with multiple-input multiple-output antenna array have drawn significant attention because it is expected to satisfy the growing bandwidth requirements for the cooperative intelligent transportation systems. However, maintaining high-quality communication links between communicating vehicles without high overhead is a challenging problem due to the high mobility of vehicles. In this paper, we propose a beam management algorithm with spatially distributed antenna subarrays instead of a single co-located antenna array. Unlike existing methods, we use distributed antenna subarrays to exploit the geometric relationship of the beam directions and the relative distance between communicating vehicles. We reduce the beam alignment errors by minimizing the sum of squared errors between the estimated beam direction after the beam training process and the refined beam direction derived from the measured position and velocity data. Additionally, a position data request protocol is devised to reduce the beam refining errors. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed beam management algorithm successfully reduces the beam alignment errors and it is robust to position and velocity measurement errors. Millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency spectrum offers orders of magnitude greater spectrum to mitigate the severe spectrum shortage in conventional cellular bands. To overcome the high propagation loss in the mmWave band, massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) can be adopted at both transmitter and receiver to provide large beamforming gains. At the same time, hybrid architecture is applied to reduce the huge power consumption caused by devices operating at radio frequency (RF). However, because of the hybrid architecture and large number of antennas, it is hard to obtain the channel state information (CSI) which is crucial for obtaining desirable beamforming gains. Off-grid error and sparsity pattern (SP) estimation error are two main limiting factors of the performance of most existing compressive sensing (CS) based channel estimation (CE) algorithms. Off-grid error presents when the true angle does not lie on the discretized angle grid of mmWave channel in the spatial domain. In this paper, we first propose a fast Bayesian matching pursuit method with ‘virtual sparsity’ to improve the accuracy of SP estimation and name it as the improved Bayesian matching pursuit (IBMP). Then an enhanced algorithm, named off-grid IBMP (OG-IBMP), is developed to mitigate the off-grid problem, followed by a theoretical analysis of OG-IBMP. This method iteratively updates the selected grid points and updates the corresponding parameters based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion. Numerical simulations are performed to validate our theoretical analysis and evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Compared to other existing methods, the results show that our proposed OG-IBMP algorithm greatly reduces the off-grid error and significantly enhances the accuracy of the SP estimation with low computational complexity. This paper tackles the problem of joint active and passive beamforming optimization for an intelligent reflective surface (IRS)-assisted multi-user downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system under both ideal and practical IRS phase shifts. We aim to maximize the spectral efficiency of the users by minimizing the sum mean square error (MSE) of the users’ received symbols. For this, a joint non-convex optimization problem is formulated under the sum minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. Alternating minimization is used to break the original joint optimization problem into the separate optimization of the active precoding matrix for the base station (BS) and the matrix of phase shifts for the IRS. While the MMSE active precoder is obtained in closed-form, the IRS phase shifts are optimized iteratively using a modified version (developed in this paper) of the vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm. Moreover, the underlying joint optimization problem is solved under two different models for the IRS phase shifts, namely by assuming $i$) a unimodular (i.e., ideal) constraint on the reflection coefficients and $ii$) a more practical reflection elements termination by a variable reactive load (which inherently introduces the phase-dependent amplitude attenuation in the IRS phase shifts). Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed method under both perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) and to show the effect of the practical constraint on the system throughput. As one of the three main application scenarios of 5 G cellular system, massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC) has been regarded as the key solution to facilitate the IoT paradigm. One major bottleneck for accommodating mMTC is the severe congestion at the cellular random access channel when plenty of Machine-Type Devices (MTDs) send access requests concurrently while the preamble resources are limited. To remedy this issue, limiting the number of retransmissions and dropping access requests after the limit is reached can be an effective approach. Yet, the effect of the preamble retransmission limit $K$ on the optimal access performance of mMTC in cellular networks remains largely unexploited, which motivates the study in this paper. Specifically, in this paper, we start by characterizing the network steady-state points based on the limiting probability of successful transmission of access requests. We then obtain explicit expressions of the access throughput and the mean access delay of successfully-transmitted access requests as functions of $K$ and the number of preambles $M$. The maximum access throughput and the corresponding optimal backoff window size are further derived. It is shown that the maximum access throughput is independent of $K$ , while the mean access delay can be significantly reduced with a small $K$ , yet, at the expense of increased request dropping ratio. In addition, to improve both the throughput and delay performance, the analysis shows that more preambles should be allocated but the performance gain becomes marginal when $M$ is large. Therewith, an algorithm is proposed for determining the least number of preambles $M^\ast$ that maximizes the access throughput and the preamble resource utilization ratio. Multi-numerology transmission is a promising multiple access scheme for flexible communication systems, which can simultaneously support users with different service requirements. To this end, both inter- and intra-numerology interference (inter-NI and intra-NI) should be suppressed, which is not straightforward. This paper proposes a novel zero-forcing (ZF) precoding design, which perfectly eliminates all the interference, for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with multi-numerology. First of all, we express the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of the multi-numerology system with spectrum sharing. From the SINR representation, we identify the channels that precoders must nullify to suppress inter-NI. After that, we propose a ZF precoder suppressing both inter-NI and intra-NI perfectly. The lower bound of ergodic achievable rate with perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is analyzed. Based on the lower bound of ergodic achievable rate, we present the feasible rate region. Also, we propose two power allocation schemes: user fairness and the ergodic sum rate maximization. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a passive antenna array composed of a large number of reflecting elements. In a RIS-assisted communication system, it is a challenging task to acquire accurate channel state information (CSI). In this paper, we propose a semi-blind channel estimation method for a RIS-assisted massive multiple-input single-output (MISO) system. Assuming a Gaussian priori on the data symbols, an iterative expectation maximization (EM)-based algorithm is developed to obtain the maximum likelihood (ML) estimate of the cascaded RIS channel. Different from existing pilot-based methods, the proposed semi-blind channel estimation method exploits the data symbols for channel estimation enhancement and only a fraction of full-pilot signaling overhead is required. In millimeter-wave (MMW) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, users and their corresponding base station (BS) have to align their beam during both initial access and data transmissions to compensate for the high propagation loss. The beam alignment (BA) procedure specified for 5th Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) has been designed to be fast and precise in the presence of non-malicious interference and noise. A smart jammer might exploit this weakness and may launch an attack during the BA phase in order to degrade the accuracy of beam selection and, thus, adversely impacting the end-to-end performance and quality-of-service experienced by the users. In this paper, we study the effects of a jamming attack at MMW frequencies during the BA procedure used to perform initial access for idle users and adaptation/recovery for connected users. We show that the BA procedure adopted in 5G NR is extremely vulnerable to a smart jamming attack and, consequently, we propose a countermeasure based on the idea of randomized probing, which consists of randomly corrupting the probing sequence transmitted by the BS in order to reject the jamming signal at the UE via a subspace-based technique based on orthogonal projections and jamming cancellation. Channel estimation is one of the main challenges for implementing reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication system with a large number of antennas at the base station (BS) because RIS is equipped with many passive reflective elements without active transmitting/receiving and signal processing abilities. In this paper, we focus on the channel estimation in a general RIS-aided multi-user mmWave communication system. Specifically, a novel two-phase channel estimation scheme consisting of on-line and off-line phases is proposed to estimate the BS-RIS channel, RIS-user channel, and BS-user channel, respectively. Inspired by the characteristics of few scatterers in mmWave communication systems, the antenna domain channels are converted into the virtual angular domain channels by using the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix. Thus, the estimation problem can be formulated as a compressed sensing (CS) problem, and solved by using efficient vector approximate message passing (VAMP) algorithm with expectation-maximization (EM) to learn unknown parameters and obtain the estimates simultaneously. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) are two promising technologies for realizing beyond-fifth generation (5G) networks. In this paper, we study the uplink spectral efficiency (SE) of a practical spatially correlated RISs-aided CF massive MIMO system over Rician fading channels. Specifically, we derive the closed-form expression for characterizing the uplink SE of the system, which shows that increasing the number of RIS elements can improve the system performance. Moreover, the results unveil that the spatial correlation of RIS has a significant impact on the system while leading to the best performance gain at a half wavelength spacing. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-enhanced wireless communication is one of the critical technologies of the sixth generation mobile communication, which has recently emerged as an innovative solution to the realization of intelligent transportation. It can meet the increasing demand for high-speed railway (HSR) communications services. In this paper, we consider a train-ground TDD wireless mobile communication paradigm to deploy two IRSs on the roadside and the train roof to assist the wireless transmission for the HSR communication system. To achieve the more significant performance gain, in the uplink transmission phase, we propose the practical channel estimation framework of the MIMO system aided by double IRSs to acquire reliable channel state information (CSI) of each channel. To facilitate the processing of the three-dimension tensor, we leverage the trilinearity of the parallel factor decomposition to decompose the received signal into a two-dimensional matrix. The Doppler frequency offset compensating scheme and channel tracking scheme based on Kalman-Filter are proposed to further decrease the pilot overheads. Then, in the downlink phase, a block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed to handle the data rate maximization problem of double IRSs communication system with the estimated CSI. We reformulate the original problem and decouple the double IRSs phase optimization problem into two single IRS phase optimization non-convex problems under the unit-modulus constraint. A quadrature spatial modulation with the fourth order transmit diversity (FO-QSM) scheme is presented in this paper. In this scheme, two dispersion-matrix (DM) sets are assigned at the transmitter, and $P$ out of $Q$ DMs are activated in each set to extend the real and imaginary parts of $P$ QSM signals respectively, to large number of transmit antennas. The two DM sets are constructed by performing Kronecker product between two simple extension matrices and the DMs of Sezginer-Sari-Biglieri (SSB) code. The framework designs of FO-QSM and the two DM sets make FO-QSM possess the properties: 1) it guarantees the fourth order transmit diversity without requiring any parameter optimization; 2) it has higher spectral efficiency than the newly proposed generalized space-time block coded spatial modulation (GSTBC-SM) scheme. Furthermore, a repeated computation reduced sphere decoding (RCR-SD) is proposed. RCR-SD is very suitable for the schemes constructed by a large number of DMs, including FO-QSM. By sorting the index vectors, the RCR-SD detector can efficiently reduce the repeated computations in the SD searching, which significantly reduces the decoding complexity without sacrificing optimal decoding performance. In this paper, we investigate a two-hop simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay communication system with an energy-limited relay node. The relay node harvests energy based on the radio-frequency (RF) signal transmitted from the source node through the time-switching (TS) protocol and fully uses the harvested energy to precode and forward the information to the destination node. The non-linear energy harvesting models are considered at the relay node. With the consideration of the channel estimation error, the joint optimization of the TS factor, source and relay precoding matrices is proposed with robustness against the channel state information (CSI) mismatch to maximize the mutual information (MI) between the source and destination nodes. The optimal structure for the source and relay precoding matrices is derived to simplify the transceiver optimization problem. The paper proposes a multiple-input multiple-output-based power line communication (PLC) system subject to Rayleigh fading and corrupted by additive cyclostationary Gaussian noise. The proposed coherent receiver structure employs a block reception rule at the reception unit for detecting the space-time block-coded transmitted data symbols. A closed-form expression for the pairwise error probability (PEP) is derived using a characteristic function approach. Exact and asymptotic expressions for the average PEP are obtained for the special case of Alamouti code transmission which show that the PLC system under consideration offers full diversity. Numerical results depict the improvement in the system performance with increase in the number of receive diversity branches and the average signal-to-noise ratio per branch and decrease in the correlation value between the noise samples. This paper aims to characterize the capacity limits of a wireless cellular network with a full-duplex (FD) base-station (BS) and half-duplex user terminals, in which three independent messages are communicated: the uplink message m1 from the uplink user to the BS, the downlink message m2 from the BS to the downlink user, and the device-to-device (D2D) message m3 from the uplink user to the downlink user. From an information theoretical perspective, the overall network can be viewed as a generalization of the FD relay broadcast channel with a side message transmitted from the relay to the destination. We begin with a simpler case that involves the uplink and downlink transmissions of (m1, m2) only, and propose an achievable rate region based on a novel strategy that uses the BS as a FD relay to facilitate the interference cancellation at the downlink user. We also prove a new converse, which is strictly tighter than the cut-set bound, and characterize the capacity region of the scalar Gaussian FD network without a D2D message to within a constant gap. This paper further studies a general setup wherein (m1, m2, m3) are communicated simultaneously. To account for the D2D message, we incorporate Marton’s broadcast coding into the previous scheme to obtain a larger achievable rate region than the existing ones in the literature. We also improve the cut-set bound by means of genie and show that by using one of the two simple rate-splitting schemes, the capacity region of the scalar Gaussian FD network with a D2D message can already be reached to within a constant gap. Finally, a generalization to the vector Gaussian channel case is discussed. This paper considers the integration of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) into massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems for downlink transmission. We consider the joint design of user clustering, transmit beamforming, and power allocation to minimize the total transmit power while meeting the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio targets. We decompose this challenging mixed-integer programming problem into three separate subproblems to solve. We propose a low-complexity learning-based user clustering algorithm, which is a modified version of mean shift clustering with a new channel correlation based clustering metric. The proposed clustering algorithm determines the clusters to trade-off between spatial dimension and power dimension offered by respective MIMO and NOMA for user multiplexing. We then design zero-forcing transmit beamformers to eliminate inter-cluster interference and optimize power allocation to minimize the total transmit power. We provide two case studies for both co-located and distributed massive MIMO systems in spatially highly correlated prorogation environments. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm forms NOMA clusters based on the available degrees of freedom in the system to effectively use both spatial and power dimensions, which results in a substantial performance improvement over MIMO-only methods or other existing clustering methods in such environments. Providing seamless connectivity to unmanned aerial vehicle user equipment (UAV-UE) is very challenging due to the encountered line-of-sight interference and reduced gains of down-tilted base station (BS) antennas. For instance, as the altitude of UAV-UEs increases, their cell association and handover procedure become driven by the side-lobes of the BS antennas. In this paper, the performance of cellular-connected UAV-UEs is studied under 3D practical antenna configurations. Two scenarios are studied: scenarios with static, hovering UAV-UEs and scenarios with mobile UAV-UEs. For both scenarios, the UAV-UE coverage probability is characterized as a function of the system parameters. The effects of the number of antenna elements on the UAV-UE coverage probability and handover rate are then investigated. Moreover, a lower bound on the handover probability is derived as a function of the number of antenna elements and the UAV-UE mobility speed. Results reveal that the UAV-UE coverage probability under a practical antenna pattern is lower than that under a simple antenna model. Moreover, vertically-mobile UAV-UEs are susceptible to altitude handover due to consecutive crossings of the nulls and peaks of the antenna side-lobes. In this paper, we introduce a Multilinear Generalized Singular Value Decomposition (ML-GSVD) for two or more matrices with one common dimension. The ML-GSVD extends the Generalized Singular Value decomposition (GSVD) of two matrices to higher orders. The proposed decomposition allows us to jointly factorize a set of matrices with one common dimension. In comparison with other approaches that extend the GSVD, the ML-GSVD preserves the essential properties of the original (matrix-based) GSVD, such as orthogonality of the second-mode factor matrices as well as the subspace structure of the third-mode factor matrices. We introduce an ALS-based algorithm to compute the ML-GSVD, which has been inspired by PARAFAC2 decomposition algorithms. In addition, we present an application of the ML-GSVD for transceiver optimization in multicast and unicast MIMO-OFDM systems. In this paper, we propose a federated online training framework for deep neural network (DNN)-based channel estimation (CE) in frequency-division duplexing (FDD) multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. The proposed DNN consists of two stages, where Stage-I explores the partial common sparsity structure among the users, while Stage-II estimates the channel state information (CSI) with reduced pilot overhead leveraging the common support information provided by Stage-I. To realize online training, we first propose three axioms for a legitimate online loss function, based on which we develop the federated online training algorithm with convergence analysis. The proposed two-tier DNN is trained online at the base station (BS) based on real-time pilot measurements distributively fed back from the users without the need of true channel labels, and the estimates for the CSI at the transmitter (CSIT) can be simultaneously generated in real-time. Meanwhile, the weights of Stage-II can be broadcasted to the users for real-time estimation of the CSI at the receiver (CSIR) at each user. Simulation shows that the proposed solution achieves higher CE performance than traditional compressive sensing (CS)-based algorithms while enjoying much faster computation. This paper considers the integrated waveform design to simultaneously achieve a desired radar beampattern and multi-users communication for a dual-function Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system. To this end, a spatio-spectral modulation strategy via shaping the spatial waveform Energy Spectral Density (ESD) in directions of communication is proposed for the communication function, while beampattern Integrated Sidelobe Level (ISL) is minimized to enhance radar detectability. Meanwhile, Peak-to-Average Ratio (PAR) and power restrictions to comply with the current hardware technique and the mainlobe width constraint to cohere the beampattern main energy on the spatial region of interest are forced, respectively. Exploiting an equivalent reformulation of the original non-convex optimization problem, a Sequential Block Enhancement (SBE) framework that alternately updates each waveform in each emitting antenna is developed to monotonically decrease ISL. Each block involves the Dinkelbach’s procedure, sequential convex approximation and Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to obtain single waveform, while the analytic proof with the converged block being a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point is provided. This paper presents a low-complexity linear minimum mean-squared-error-based iterative soft interference cancellation (LMMSE-ISIC) scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To avoid direct matrix inversion in the conventional LMMSE-ISIC scheme, expressions are derived to obtain the filtering vector and estimate of the conventional scheme; the direct inverse operation is then replaced by the vector-based operations in the proposed scheme. Thus, for the worst-case scenario in the proposed scheme, the complexity of estimating each transmit symbol is approximately proportional to the square of the number of receive antennas; in the conventional scheme, it is approximately proportional to the cube of the number of receive antennas. In addition, because there are no approximations for deriving the filtering vector and estimate, the proposed LMMSE-ISIC scheme achieves near-optimum performance identical to that of the conventional scheme, which is close to the matched filter bound of the channel. Further, the extension of the proposed scheme for iterative detection and decoding is developed for coded systems. The simulated results confirm that the conventional and proposed schemes outperform the approximated matrix inversion based schemes and achieve the identical error performance in both uncoded and coded systems, while the complexity order of the proposed scheme is similar to or even lower than those of the approximation schemes. Therefore, the proposed scheme can be considered an effective near-optimum LMMSE-based iterative detection approach for MIMO systems, especially for massive MIMO systems with a high load factor. It is well accepted that acquiring downlink channel state information in frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is challenging because of the large overhead in training and feedback. In this paper, we propose a deep generative model (DGM)-based technique to address this challenge. Exploiting the partial reciprocity of uplink and downlink channels, we first estimate the frequency-independent underlying channel parameters, i.e., the magnitudes of path gains, delays, angles-of-arrivals (AoAs) and angles-of-departures (AoDs), via uplink training, since these parameters are common in both uplink and downlink. Then, the frequency-specific underlying channel parameters, specifically, the phase of each propagation path, are estimated via downlink training using a very short training signal. In the first step, we incorporate the underlying distribution of the channel parameters as a prior into our channel estimation algorithm. We use DGMs to learn this distribution. Simulation results indicate that our proposed DGM-based channel estimation technique outperforms, by a large gap, the conventional channel estimation techniques in practical ranges of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we propose and implement blind multiuser carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) estimation for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) uplink system using orthogonal propagator method (OPM) over a noisy frequency-selective channel. The performance of typical OPM is limited at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) due to its noise-free signal model. The additive white Gaussian noise mainly impacts the diagonal elements of the data covariance matrix (DCM) of the received signal. First, the proposed fractional CFOs estimator minimizes the noise effect by reconstructing the denoised diagonal elements of the DCM for the received signal through cubic Hermite interpolation. Therefore, we use modified OPM to estimate multiple CFOs for MIMO SC-FDMA systems. Second, we have used an iterative method based on the first-order Taylor series approximation of the CFO vector to avoid peak ambiguity and reduce the number of iterations required in the grid search. The mean square error of the proposed CFO estimator considerably improves compared with the existing methods at a low SNR regime. The bit error rate performance of the proposed method for MIMO SC-FDMA is also compared with the existing methods. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) aided positioning technologies have been recently recognized as promising solutions to fulfil the high accuracy requirement of indoor localization systems. In this paper, exploiting a distributed M-MIMO framework, we propose to employ a deep belief network (DBN) to analyze the received signal strengths (RSS) generated by a diffraction model, where the impact from interfering persons on the targeted user equipment (UE) is considered. Next, the preliminary DBN estimates are forwarded to a long-short term memory network (LSTMN), where the trajectory information of the targeted UE can be extracted based on much less historical trajectory information than existing solutions. Then, the three-dimension (3D) coordinates of the UE’s positions can be estimated with a back propagation neural network (BPNN) which combines the outputs of DBN and LSTMN. Finally, extensive simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed BPNN scheme. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
