This paper describes a flow control of the dye in the paper mill with the quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) fed induction motor drive. More than a decade the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and current-source inverter (CSI) have been used to control the speed of the induction motor, which in turns controls the flow of dye. Recently, the matrix converter (MC) has been an excellent competitor for the VSI or CSI for its compactness. The voltage transfer ratio of the VSI, CSI, and MC has been limited to 0.866. Thus, the efficiency of these converters is less. To improve the voltage transfer ratio the quasi-Z-source network (QZSN) is to be used between voltage source and indirect MC (IMC). The modification in the shoot-through duty ratio of the QZSN varies the voltage transfer ratio greater than 0.866. Different voltage transfer ratios are needed for different voltage sag conditions. For a variation of the duty ratio of the QZSN, the fuzzy logic controller has been presented. To control the IMC vector control with space vector modulation has been presented. This paper proposes the implementation of QZSIMC adjustable speed drive for the flow control of dye in paper mill during different voltage sag conditions. A 4-kW prototype has been built and the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified with simulation results and experimental setup. Simulation is done in MATLAB, Simulink platform. Experimental setup is done with the aid of a TMS320F2812 (Texas Instrument) processor. The experimental results validate the maintenance of the speed of an induction motor at the set condition, thus controlling the perfect flow of dye in paper manufacturing technology. This paper proposes a novel dual input nine-level inverter (DINLI) topology which requires only seven controllable devices. The dual inputs are un-identical DC voltage sources in the ratio 1:3. A simple control scheme is derived by appropriately modifying the phase disposition pulse width modulation technique to generate high-quality 9-level output from the DINLI topology. At any given instant, a maximum of four switches conduct out of which only a maximum of two switches operate at high frequency, bringing down the switching and conduction losses significantly and improving the overall system efficiency. The bidirectional DINLI (BDINLI) topology with reactive power capability can be realized by replacing the unidirectional devices with the controlled switches (i.e., total nine switches). In addition, the proposed DINLI topology does not require extra voltage balancing circuits which further improves the efficiency. The DINLI operation is verified through MATLAB simulations for grid-connected applications and its extension to an n-level, 3-phase application is also investigated. Four-level hybrid-clamped inverter is a newly proposed topology that can operate under a wide voltage range without switches connected in series. However, when it is applied in medium voltage high power conversions, the flying capacitors in each phase will occupy a huge volume and a high switching frequency is required to restrain the voltage ripples. In order to overcome this drawback, a four-level active neutral-point clamped inverter is discussed in this paper, which consists of only six switches and no diodes or flying capacitors are required. In order to balance the neutral-point voltages under the full power factor and modulation index range, a capacitor voltage balance method based on carrier-overlapped pulsewidth modulation is proposed in this paper. The upper and lower dc-link capacitor voltages are balanced by zero-sequence voltage injection and the central dc-link capacitor voltage is balanced by adjusting the duty cycles of switching signals slightly. The development of wide band-gap semiconductor devices is rapidly promoting the development of power electronics technology, especially in high frequency (HF) power converter region. A category of HF power converter is switch-mode power amplifier (PA). This paper focuses on the implementation of a multiphase dc–dc PA with high bandwidth and high power rate. When naturally sampled phase-shifted carrier modulation is implemented in the practical digital control system to control this HF power converter, the pulsewidth error problem caused by limited domain frequency of control chip becomes much severer. As a result, dc voltage component of each phase becomes different under several conditions, leading to current imbalance among phase inductors. This paper analyzes this problem and proposes a sensorless control method to solve it, based on the injection of random sequence in reference wave. A four-phase prototype employing GaN devices is fabricated, switching at 1 MHz. Current imbalance and effectiveness of the proposed control method are verified by experimental results. The prototype is capable of uniformly amplifying sine signal within 200 kHz and a 350 kHz bandwidth random signal, with peak output power up to 810 W. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a 5-level inverter topology for open-end induction motor drives by using a single dc source. The open stator windings of the drive are supplied with a 3-level flying capacitor inverter from one end and capacitor-fed 2-level inverter from another end. The voltage ratio of the dc link to the capacitor in 2-level inverter is maintained at 4:1 ratio to generate five-level voltage output. The capacitor in 2-level inverter is balanced by the switching redundant vector combinations from both the inverters while the floating capacitors in the 3-level inverter are balanced by using redundant switching states. The proposed topology gives 5-level operation with less number of floating capacitors and power semiconductor switches compared to other existing topologies. Also, the balancing of the capacitors is independent of load power factor and modulation index. Further, the generalization of the proposed dual inverter scheme for any n-level inverter is also included in this paper. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. A novel pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for the decoupled and coordinated control of two parallel connected split-phase induction machines is discussed in this paper for the first time. Both the motors are operated from a single six-phase voltage source inverter which acts as a power source, and two switched capacitor-fed auxiliary inverters to limit the flow of nontorque producing currents in each motor. Both the motors can be operated at its full rated power with low switching frequency, and decoupled control for full power range can be achieved with the proposed topology. This is possible because the individual machines do not carry the load/harmonic currents of other machine (unlike the conventional series or parallel connected systems). The converters can be modulated using sine-triangle PWM or space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM). Furthermore, two different schemes of SVPWM techniques are proposed and compared in this paper. Exhaustive experimental results for all the modulation schemes are provided for steady state and transient operating conditions including start-up to validate the proposed topology and modulation schemes. The number of applicable carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) patterns increases with the growth of output levels in scalable multilevel topologies, such as active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converters. Therefore, it is hard to optimize PWM for such topology, especially with large output levels. In this paper, a simplified and modular carrier-based PWM design approach for multilevel ANPC converters is proposed. Inspired by the decomposition theory, the topology decomposition is introduced in this paper to decompose an N-level ANPC converter into low-level subtopologies. Then, the complete set of applicable PWM patterns is derived based on ANPC operation principles, which makes it possible to optimize the performance based on the various requirements in applications. Meanwhile, the carrier-based PWM is implemented through the utilization of subtopologies with low-level modulation schemes, such that the design process of carrier-based PWM is greatly simplified and modularly realized. Both the complete PWM patterns and PWM design examples with experimental results of several ANPC converters are provided to show the feasibility and modularity of the proposed method. This paper proposes a new class of topologies of single-stage high-frequency ac-link power converters, which is capable of providing both voltage step up/down within a wide frequency and voltage ranges. The proposed family, which supports bidirectional power flow, can interface various single/multi-port dc and/or single/multi-phase ac systems to provide dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, or ac–ac power conversion. In this family of converter, which offers a very modular structure, a small inductor that forms the link exchanges power entirely or partially between the source and load. The proposed family can function in buck, boost, and/or buck–boost modes of operation, and a combination of these modes of operation is also feasible. In comparison to the parallel inductive four-quadrant link converters, the proposed family features a significantly reduced link peak current, reduced switch ratings, and reduced total number of power switches. These features enhance the efficiency, reduce the total cost, and increase the power density of the system. In order to further improve the overall efficiency of the system, minimize the current/voltage stress over all utilized semiconductor devices, and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI), a small capacitor is placed in parallel with the link inductor to realize soft-switching operation for the proposed configurations. Moreover, the proposed converters have the potential to incorporate a lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer for electrical isolation. The proposed circuit topologies prevent reverse recovery issues and eliminate losses corresponding to body diodes of power switching devices via utilizing power switches in conjunction with external fast recovery diodes. The proposed family offers a very high level of reliability owing to its immunity from short circuit of input and output terminals and open circuit of the link inductor, which may occur in other power converters due to commutation problem resulting from a short deadtime or an overlap time between switches, unwanted control command, delay in electronic circuits, or EMI noise's misgating on or off, in addition to the absence of electrolytic capacitors in the power circuit. A control approach is also developed to regulate input and output currents in one stage of power conversion. A detailed theoretical analysis, operation, design methodology, and control strategy of the proposed family are provided in this paper, and the effectiveness and performance of the proposed converter family are verified via simulation results and experimentally. In this paper, a new class of bidirectional partial-resonance power converters is presented. The proposed family can be configured to interface single- or multi-port dc, single- or multi-phase ac systems at input-side and/or output-side. The proposed family offers a very modular structure, which can lead to cost reduction from a common designed module. In this converter, which accomplishes power conversion in a single stage, a small inductor placed in series with the input and output switch-bridges forms the link. This small link inductor is responsible for transferring power between different ports of the system. The proposed topologies can operate in buck, boost, and buck–boost modes of operation to step up and/or step down the voltage. In buck–boost mode of operation, the converter is controlled such that the power is entirely transferred through the link inductor; whereas, in buck or boost modes of operation only a fraction of the power is transferred through the link inductor, and the remaining power is directly transferred from input phases to the output phases. Galvanic isolation, which is typically a prominent factor contributing to power density of a converter, can be provided by means of a compact and lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer added to the link. In comparison with earlier generations of partial-resonance inductive-link power converters, in the proposed converter, the level of link peak current and consequently power-loss, as well as voltage and current stress of switches are dramatically decreased. A very small film capacitor can be placed in parallel with the link inductor to facilitate zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation for all the switches/diodes. Apart from increasing the overall efficiency, minimized dv/dt stress and improvement in power density are achieved by adding the link capacitor. The proposed converter employs four-quadrant switches, i.e., bidirectional-conducting bidirectional-blocking switches, and charges the link inductor in both positive and negative directions in each cycle. In view of this, better utilization of the link inductor and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) are offered. Furthermore, two distinct switching algorithms are developed for the proposed family of converters. In this paper, the detailed behavior of the proposed family is investigated analytically, and simulation and experimental results are presented to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed converter. A low-power proof-of-concept prototype with input voltage of 59 V/161 V, load voltage of 178 V/73.5 V, maximum switching frequency of 4.9 kHz/3.65 kHz at 215 W/450 W in a step-up/step-down operation is considered for the experimental verification. A new transformer-less three-level grid-tied inverter is proposed in this article. By employing the switched-capacitor (SC) modules, a new topology is derived. The proposed topology has some features which are high efficiency, the capability of voltage boosting without utilization of any additional boost stage, and suppressing the leakage current by using common grounded strategy. In this article, a peak current control is employed to generate the gate pulses of power semiconductor switches and adjustment of both active and reactive powers. By doing so, the grid injected current is controlled and adjusted to have a proper quality. The operation modes, design consideration, and a comparison with some recently proposed grid-connected topologies are done through this paper. In high power applications, 3-phase ac/dc Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) are paralleled to increase the overall aggregated converter power rating, effective switching frequency and control bandwidth. For this, interleaved Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and current limiting paralleling inductors are required. Interphase Transformers (ITRs) are often used for the converter paralleling because they provide large magnetizing inductances for the currents flowing between the converters while introducing negligible leakage inductances for the currents flowing from the converters to the ac grid. This large asymmetry in the inductance values makes it difficult to independently control active power flows in the individual converters. Thus, if the converters dc buses are not mutually interconnected, instabilities in active control of balance of converter dc bus voltages can occur in certain operational conditions. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the active power flows produced by the currents flowing among the converters and explains origins of potential instability in the active control of balance of dc bus voltages in multi-converter systems with floating dc buses, paralleled using the ITRs. This paper proposes a single-phase ac–dc–ac converter composed of a transformer and two three-leg converters connected in series. The proposed converter allows to supply the load with a voltage with constant amplitude and frequency, and to operate with the grid current with low harmonic distortion and high power factor. In addition, the converter can be used to mitigate fundamental overvoltage and voltage harmonics at the grid. The system model, regions of operation, a power flow analysis, and a method to regulate the dc-link voltages using the voltage vector redundancies are given. A trinary multilevel converter uses a few heterogeneous H-bridge submodules (SMs) to synthesize an output voltage with multiple levels. Two major limitations of this converter are that it needs multiple dc sources and it cannot operate under pulsewidth modulation (PWM). This paper addresses these limitations by adding a low-voltage H-bridge SM to this converter and proposing a new switching algorithm. The resulting PWM-based asymmetric cascaded H-bridge converter uses only one dc source and synthesizes a high-quality output voltage. This improved converter can be a potential choice for real and reactive power support in power system applications. This paper also proposes methods for stability analysis and design of this converter. A modular multilevel converter (MMC) is regarded as a promising topology in high-voltage direct current systems. However, the MMC consists of numerous submodules (SMs) and switching devices, which lead to a considerable switching loss, and increased cost and size of the heat sink. To mitigate these issues, this paper presents a novel modulation method composed of fundamental frequency modulation (FFM) and multicarrier-based sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation schemes. The main purpose of this modulation method is the reduction of switching loss while maintaining good harmonic performance. However, the FFM scheme leads to the unbalanced capacitor voltage of each SM in the MMC. Accordingly, this paper additionally proposes the rotation method and selective voltage balancing control for SMs to ensure effective performance of the method. This paper presents two capacitor voltage balancing (CVB) strategies for modular multilevel converter (MMC) applications. Both balancing schemes are based on model predictive control and are designed to efficiently solve a constrained optimal control problem, where the predicted capacitor voltage errors are included in the cost function with the demanded output voltage of a cluster being forced through an equality constraint. The first method proposed in this paper computes specific modulation indexes for each module using the explicit solution of a relaxed version of the original optimization problem. The second approach proposed in this paper reduces the complexity of the original problem by linearizing the objective function and using an optimal sorting network based on a greedy algorithm to solve this approximation. Considering the structures of both solution approaches, they are integrated into modulation schemes based on phase-shifted and level-shifted pulsewidth modulation algorithms, respectively. Experimental results obtained from a nine-cell single-phase MMC prototype demonstrate the good performance achieved with the proposed methodologies, as well as the implementation simplicity offered by the proposed CVB algorithms. A nonisolated dc–dc converter with chain links of submodules (SMs) is proposed in this paper. The converter can perform as a dc transformer with a low step-up ratio. To demonstrate the step-up dc–dc conversion, the converter is operated in a resonant conversion mode, achieving soft switching and inherent balancing of the SM capacitor voltages. The circuit configuration is presented and the operation principle is analyzed in this paper. Experimental results based on a downscaled prototype validate the performance of the proposed converter as a low step-up ratio dc transformer. This paper presents a new six-level flying capacitor based (FC-based) multilevel converter with one dc source and the capability of operating in all power factors and modulation indexes. Multilevel converters with one dc voltage source are attractive in many applications as they do not need rather expensive and bulky multiwinding input transformer connection at the dc side. On the other hand, not all classic multilevel converters with one dc source can produce any desirable number of output voltage levels at all power factors and/or modulation indexes. In this paper, a hybrid structure is proposed in which six voltage levels can be realized at the ac terminals. The modulation technique and the control strategy for the FC voltage balancing are presented. To show the advantages of the proposed converter, different performance criteria, such as switch count and rating, the size of capacitors, switching frequency, and power losses, are compared with other existing six-level topologies. The results indicate that the proposed structure is superior to other six-level converters from different standpoints. In this paper, a new structure for a nonisolated boost dc–dc converter is proposed. The proposed converter generates higher voltage gain than some conventional nonisolated boost dc–dc converters. In this paper, the voltage and current equations of the elements and voltage gain in continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode are extracted. Then, the critical inductance converter is extracted and the current stresses in the switches are calculated. To achieve high voltage gain, a generalized structure based on the proposed structure generates for dc–dc converters. Meanwhile, the root mean square current relations of devices are obtained for an extended structure. Impedance source inverters have experienced a fast evolution since the first release of the Z-source inverter in 2003. This evolution is not limited to improving the structure of the different topologies but also includes their modulation and control schemes in order to reinforce their performance from many perspectives. Accordingly, many modulation schemes have been proposed in different research activities, but the full differences among these modulation schemes, including their effect on the switching losses, are not clear yet to the researchers. Hence, this research activity is aimed at introducing a comprehensive review of these different modulation schemes employed for the three-phase impedance source inverters, which is enhanced with a comparative assessment. In this paper, different modulation schemes are classified and reviewed, introducing an important benchmark in order to identify the basic differences between these modulation schemes. In other words, from this paper, the concept of classifying the different modulation schemes and the mandatory equations to implement each scheme can easily be drawn. Multilevel converters with floating capacitors (FCs) are widely applied in recent years in a wide range of industrial applications from high-voltage direct current systems to high power drives. However, some FC topologies lack complete FC voltage balancing capability due to the inherent topology limitation or the insufficient switching state for capacitor balancing. This will result in large ripples on capacitors at low frequency (such as fundamental frequency), limiting their performance and application, particularly, when the fundamental frequency is very low in low-speed drive operations. Typical examples of those multilevel converters are modular multilevel converters (MMC), nested neutral-point-clamped (NNPC) converter, etc. In order to improve the FC balancing for this kind of multilevel converters, this paper proposes a carrier-based pulse-width modulation (PWM) method, named stair edge PWM method. This method can obtain sufficient redundant switching states for FC voltage balancing by producing multiple levels in one PWM period. The FC voltage balancing is thus achieved at switching frequency, which can greatly reduce the capacitor voltage ripple and therefore enable the use of much smaller FCs. Meanwhile, the voltage stress on each device and low $dv/dt$ feature are still the same as the normal multilevel operation, reserving two of the most salient features of multilevel converters. The proposed method also features much simpler and easier implementation compared with space-vector-based approaches, particularly when high-level converters are considered. In this paper, two structures are proposed for the switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter. In the proposed structures to extend the voltage gain of inverter, two new switched-inductor structures are used. In the proposed structures, voltage across the capacitors in the Z-source network and in the switched-inductor is symmetric and small. The other advantage of proposed inverters is known as achieving higher voltage gain per smaller duty cycle ratio (of shoot-through). Compared with a conventional continuous input current switched-inductor quasi-Z-source inverter at the same gain voltage, there is less of a ripple of input current in the proposed inverters. In this paper, at first the both the conventional and the proposed switched-inductor Z-source inventers are thoroughly investigated to find out their governing relations. Then, the proposed Z-source inverters are compared with the conventional ones by simulating them to assess their performance efficiency. Next, applying the simple boost pulse width modulation the simulation is carried out with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Due to the development of integrated electronic appliances, independently controlled multiple-output dc–dc converter prototypes have started to emerge in various forms, offering advantages of more compact size and cheaper cost. However, the existing converter topologies are capable of regulating outputs only with the help of auxiliary converter circuits and additional switches. The converter also fails to control all of the outputs independently when the converter has a greater number of output stages than that of the peripheral switching/linear regulators. Therefore, in this paper, a novel dc–dc converter prototype is proposed that can be utilized to construct independently controlled multiple-output converter topology with a single PWM signal driving the primary inverter switches. This paper presents a hybrid seven-level converter based on T-type converter and H-bridge cascaded suitable for low-voltage and high-power-density applications. The operation principles and conduction paths are analyzed comprehensively. Voltage balance control of the floating capacitors is the key point of this paper. Mathematical expressions of capacitor voltage balance conditions are deduced based on sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM). The results show that floating capacitor voltages are only balanced when the modulation index is below 0.82 under SPWM. In order to enlarge the modulation index ensuring the capacitor voltage balance, space vector modulation (SVM) is also applied to regulate floating capacitor voltages taking advantage of redundant switching vectors. Meanwhile, in SVM, there are no additional control requirements for the capacitor voltage. Taken both SPWM and SVM into consideration, the limit to the range of operation for this seven-level converter is presented, which is a function of the modulation index and the power factor. The merit of dc voltage utilization improvement in this topology is also analyzed based on simulation results. An unidirectional single-phase three-wire rectifier is proposed in this paper. Such topology is composed of a noncontrolled leg, two controlled legs, and a capacitor bank. A suitable model, pulse-width modulation, and control strategies of the system are proposed as well. The control strategy includes the synchronization method, in which it imposes the grid currents with the same phase angle of the voltages generated by the rectifier. This method ensures sinusoidal grid currents and mitigates the zero-crossover distortions normally caused by the use of diodes. This paper introduces a novel five-level nested neutral point piloted (NNPP) converter and analyzes the operating principle of five-level NNPP converter. This paper presents a novel space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm based on gh coordinate for five-level NNPP converter. First, the common-mode voltage is reduced by choosing the appropriate redundant switching states. After that, the floating-capacitor voltage balance control strategy is presented. The appropriate switch combinations of each phase are determined by the control requirements of floating-capacitor voltages respectively and the hardware mapping method of the switching states is presented. Furthermore, the neutral-point voltage balance control strategy is presented. In order to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages, the seven-segment switching sequence is selected according to the control requirements of dc-link capacitor voltages and the neutral-point voltage regulatory factor is introduced to regulate the durations of the redundant switching states in a switching cycle. This paper analyzes three different carrier-based modulation patterns applied to a three-phase high-power-factor-corrected (PFC) five-level buck+boost-type converter acting as an interface between dc distribution systems and an ac grid. The modulation is analyzed employing the space vectors theory so that the achievable performance is demonstrated. The main advantage of the analyzed modulation strategy is its simplicity, which makes it suitable for digital signal controller (DSC) implementations. This seems straightforward for voltage source converters, but is a challenge for current-multilevel converters that typically employ field-programmable gate array devices to achieve better harmonic distortion performance. This is due to modern power electronics DSCs being typically designed for other converter topologies. The power converter is constructed with two phase-shift-modulated six-switch buck-type PFC converters, paralleled by interphase transformers, and an inverting circuit. The system features: bidirectional current carrying capability; relatively low parts count; high utilization of the semiconductors; and low current and voltage ripple at its terminals. The principle of operation, detailed description, analysis of the modulation strategy, and dimensioning equations for three different power circuit realizations are described in this paper assuming the analyzed modulation patterns. In the topology of double-inverter fed wound rotor induction machine (DI-WRIM) two voltage source inverters (VSIs) are connected one each on stator and rotor terminals. This leads to ripple in both stator and rotor currents. In this paper, these current ripples are analyzed in terms of the stator- and rotor-flux ripples, which are estimated from their respective terminals. To reduce the current ripples, the VSIs of the stator and rotor terminals are modulated with different pulsewidth modulation (PWM) sequences. The switching loss in the DI-WRIM is also analyzed for the proposed stator–rotor PWM sequence combinations, based on the flexibility of changing the power factor, by changing the flux component of the current fed from either side of a DI-WRIM drive. The proposed PWM combinations with the proposed flux component in currents are found to reduce the stator and rotor current ripples and, the switching losses. The analytically estimated root mean square current ripples for the proposed PWM combinations are validated using the simulation and the experimental results obtained from a 3-kW DI-WRIM drive. This paper proposes a new multilevel inverter (MLI) topology that utilizes trinary sequence for the dc sources. It gives maximum output voltage level with minimum dc source and switch count when compared to other sequences, such as symmetric, natural, binary, and quasi-linear. This is due to the fact that the trinary sequence generates of all additive and subtractive combinations of input dc levels in the output voltage waveform. The concept is implemented on a 9-level asymmetric MLI using only four active devices. Multicarrier unipolar pulsewidth modulation technique is adopted to create the switching pulses. Theoretical calculation of total harmonic distortion in both voltage and current waveforms has been performed using asymptotic time domain formula. These values are compared with simulation and experimental values for different modulation indices. Power loss calculation for proposed topology is discussed with appropriate mathematical equations. This paper presents a new single-phase ac–dc–ac three-level three-leg converter composed of three coupled-inductors and six active switches. The system model, operation principles, and a control strategy are presented and discussed. Additionally, a space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique is developed to double the effective frequency of the grid and load voltages and to reduce the switching losses. The proposed converter is compared to other similar converters in terms of switch count, harmonic distortion, and power losses. The results show that the proposed topology has improved power quality and uses fewer switches and gate drive circuits. These characteristics can potentially reduce the costs and the complexity of the system. In addition, the proposed converter eliminates the requirement for dead time to prevent short circuit of the dc-link. This paper studies a multilevel multiphase dc–ac conversion system configured by a neutral-point-clamped converter fed by multiple battery packs connected in series. A virtual-vector modulation is selected and a state-of-charge (SoC) balancing control is designed to be able to employ the full battery bank capacity, even under different battery initial SoC values or different battery nominal capacities. The SoC balancing among battery packs is accomplished through the multilevel converter operation in a lossless manner, by simply distributing the dc-to-ac power flow among the batteries according to their SoC. A simple average system model is also presented, which allows performing very fast system simulations over long periods of time and serves as a convenient tool to tune the compensator parameters. The satisfactory performance of the proposed system configuration and control, which can be applied with any number of levels and phases, has been verified through simulations and experiments in a four-level three-phase dc–ac converter fed by three lithium-ion battery packs. The results prove the feasibility and advantages of the proposed system configuration, which can be used to implement conversion systems with different specifications combining several instances of a standard battery pack and a standard power semiconductor device. Photovoltaic (PV) systems having rechargeable batteries are prone to be complex and costly because multiple converters are necessary to individually regulate a load, PV panel, and battery. This paper proposes novel nonisolated multiport converters (MPCs) integrating a bidirectional pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converter and phase-shift-switched capacitor converter (PS-SCC) for standalone PV systems. A PWM converter and PS-SCC are integrated by reducing the total switch count, realizing the simplified system and circuit. In the proposed MPCs, two control freedoms of duty cycle and phase shift angle are manipulated to individually regulate the load, PV panel, and/or battery. The detailed operation analysis was performed to mathematically derive gain characteristics and zero voltage switching operation boundaries. For the battery discharging mode, in which the PV panel is not available and the MPC behaves as a single-input–single-output converter with two control freedoms available, the optimized control scheme achieving the lowest rms current is also proposed to maximize power conversion efficiencies. Various kinds of experimental verification tests using a 200-W prototype were performed to verify the theoretical analysis and to demonstrate the performance of the proposed MPC. In voltage-source converter (VSC) systems, utilization of filter inductors with deep saturation characteristics is often advantageous due to the improved size, cost, and efficiency. However, with the use of conventional current regulation (CCR) methods, the inductor saturation results in significant dynamic performance loss and poor steady-state current waveform quality. This paper proposes the inverse dynamic model (IDM)-based compensation method to overcome these performance issues. The method converts the nonlinear inductor of the plant to a fictitious linear inductor such that linear current regulators can perform satisfactorily. In conjunction, identification of L–R parameters is performed to obtain IDM of the system within an acceptable range of sensitivity yielding satisfactory performance. The performance issues of CCR methods with saturable inductor are demonstrated by simulations and experiments. Then, the proposed method is experimentally verified on a single-phase 1.5-kW grid-connected VSC. A multilevel drive can be realized by using an open-ended machine, fed from dual two-level inverters. The topology supplied from isolated dc sources is suitable for transportation electrification. In vehicular systems, it is essential that the isolated dc sources, comprising of battery packs, should discharge uniformly and maintain balanced dc voltage at the dc-link terminal. A simple carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique is presented in this paper, which can effectively regulate the power drawn between the two two-level inverters while maintaining the multilevel operation of the drive. The modulation technique can balance the instantaneous state of charge of independent battery packs and dynamically equalize the power flow from the two inverters, based on drive requirement. This paper proposes a new carrier-based modulation strategy for symmetrical cascaded multilevel converters denominated phase disposition with sorting (PDS). It deals with the issue of irregular distribution of PWM signals and power for each converter cell that occurs when using the conventional phase disposition (PD) modulation. Although some alternatives have been proposed in the literature for overcoming these problems, most of them do not consider operation of the converter under fault conditions on the power cells. Therefore, one of the contributions of the proposed PDS modulation strategy is the ability to evenly distribute the pulse signals for the converter semiconductor switches, resulting in the same power being processed by all cells, maintaining the good quality of the synthesized output voltages, even with faults in one or more power cells. In addition, it allows implementation in commercial digital signal processors, not requiring additional hardware. The good performance of the proposed modulation strategy is validated through experimental results for a three-phase symmetrical cascaded multilevel converter with three cells per phase, considering normal and faulty conditions on the power cells. Unipolar-pulsewidth modulation (UP-PWM) inverter takes advantages of high power efficiency and small output chokes which is widely used in the industry. However, UP-PWM inverters cannot be used in parallel operation due to a current unbalance problem. This paper studies the current unbalance problem of paralleled UP-PWM inverters with common dc bus and ac bus. First, the problem of unbalanced inductor current is defined and analyzed. Second, a technique to eliminate unbalanced currents is proposed. The proposed current balancing technique only requires one more current sensor in an inverter module rather than changing converter topology or modulation method, which makes it possible to apply UP-PWM inverters in parallel-operation while keeping the advantages of unipolar switching. The proposed current balancing method is verified by both simulation and hardware experiment. This paper deals with the analysis of the input dc-link voltage ripple in multilevel inverter based on H-bridge and level doubling network (LDN). The LDN is basically a half-bridge fed by a floating capacitor, with voltage self-balancing capability, recalling the concept of a flying capacitor configuration. The amplitude of the LDN voltage ripple is analytically determined considering both the low-order and the switching harmonic components. In particular, peak-to-peak distributions of voltage ripples over the fundamental period are analytically determined, making possible the design of dc-link capacitor relying only on the dc-voltage ripple requirements. The case study makes reference to negligible switching ripple in the output current. It well represents either grid connection or passive load having almost sinusoidal currents. This paper introduces a novel H-bridge structured ac–ac pulsewidth modulation (PWM) converter topology based on two-level non-differential ac chopper legs, which can work at the non-inverting and inverting modes for the utility voltage compensation. Compared to the traditional bipolar-type H-bridge ac–ac converter, no bidirectional switches are switched in a complementary manner to overcome the commutation problem due to the delayed response of electronic circuits and semiconductor switching devices. The detailed PWM control signals and operational principles are presented to regulate the output voltage in a bipolar manner. Especially the main advantage is that the proposed ac–ac converter has the same buck/boost operation process for non-inverting and inverting modes, which ensures the continuously average current supply to the low-voltage output side without a high-value capacitor to support power. There have been several advanced topologies proposed by the community for micro-inverter applications. However, many such applications suffer from unwanted second-order harmonic current ripple at dc input. Moreover, in the absence of suitable passive filter or ripple compensator, the second-order harmonics ripple may propagate into the dc source. This results in several problems to the system, related to system efficiency, life, cost, size, reliability, and stability. This paper proposes an adaptive sliding-mode controller to shape the output impedance of the boost-circuit of quasi-switched boost inverter such that the propagation of the ripple from dc link to the dc-input source is resisted. The quasi-switched boost inverter is one of the advanced and suitable topologies for the micro-inverter applications. The adaptive nature of the proposed controller improves the transient performance of the system at the line–load transients unlike some existing solutions, which affects dynamics adversely to achieve ripple mitigation objective. This paper studies pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques suitable for a four-level five-phase open-end winding (OeW) drive. The drive comprises a five-phase induction machine, supplied using two two-level voltage source inverters with isolated and unequal dc-link voltages, in the ratio 2:1. A decoupled carrier-based (CB) PWM modulation strategy, based on unequal voltage reference sharing between the two converters, is introduced in this paper. The stability of dc-link voltages in OeW drives is investigated next, using a novel analysis technique. Several modulation methods are analyzed and the results show that application of the coupled PWM technique, with carriers having in-phase disposition, leads to overcharging of the capacitor in the dc-link of the inverter intended to operate with the lower dc-link voltage. On the other hand, the proposed decoupled CB PWM scheme naturally eliminates the dc-link capacitor overcharging problem. These findings are verified experimentally, using open-loop V/f control. Two different decoupled CB modulation methods are compared and the best performing modulation method is selected and incorporated further into an OeW drive with field-oriented control. The presented steady state and transient experimental results demonstrate that the decoupled CB PWM technique is suitable for high-performance variable speed drive applications. This paper proposes a multilevel series compensator (MSC) to deal with voltage sags/swells, harmonic compensation, or reactive power compensation. Such a device can be considered as a dynamic voltage restorer or a series active power filter (Series-APF). The MSC can improve the power quality of loads located in stiff systems. The configuration is based on three-phase bridge (TPB) converters connected by means of cascaded single-phase transformers. This arrangement permits the use of a single dc-link. A generalization for $K$ -stages in which $K$ -transformers are coupled with $K$-TPB converters is presented. The topology permits generating a high number of levels in the voltage waveforms with a low number of power switches in comparison with a classic topology. The multilevel waveforms are generated by the converters through a suitable pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy that takes into consideration the transformer turns ratios. Modularity and simple maintenance make the proposed MSC an attractive solution compared with some conventional configurations. Model, PWM strategy, and overall control are discussed in this paper. This paper proposes a dual-space vector control scheme for the open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) drive fed by the dual inverter with a single dc supply. Potential zero-sequence current in the open-end winding drive system has to be considered since it causes circulating current in the winding and leads to high current stress of power semiconductor devices and high losses. Zero-sequence current in open-end winding ac motor drives is usually caused by the zero-sequence voltage, and therefore switching combinations which do not produce zero-sequence voltage are used to synthesize the reference voltage in existing methods. But even so, the zero-sequence voltage can also be produced by the dead time of the inverter. In order to suppress zero-sequence current in the OEW-PMSM drive, a dual-space vector control scheme is proposed and a novel dual-inverter space vector pulse width modulation (PWM) with the zero-sequence voltage reference is employed to regulate system zero-sequence voltage in this paper. Compared with existing dual inverter PWM strategies, the novel algorithm build a regulation mechanism for the zero-sequence voltage. The proposed method is compared with the conventional vector control by simulations and experiments, and the results shown that the proposed scheme can suppress zero-sequence current effectively. In several electrical dc–ac power conversions, the ac output voltage is higher than the input voltage. If a voltage-source inverter (VSI) is used, then an additional dc–dc boosting stage is required to overcome the step-down VSI limitations. Recently, several impedance source converters are gaining higher attentions [1], [2], as they are able to provide buck-boost capability in a single conversion stage. This paper proposes the merging of the boost stage and the VSI stage in a single stage dc–ac power conversion, denoted as split-source inverter (SSI). The proposed topology requires the same number of active switches of the VSI, three additional diodes, and the same eight states of a conventional space-vector modulation. It also shows some merits compared to Z-source inverters, especially in terms of reduced switch voltage stress for voltage gains higher than 1.15. This paper presents the analysis of the SSI and compares different modulation schemes. Moreover, it presents a modified modulation scheme to eliminate the low frequency ripple in the input current and the voltage across the inverter bridge. Pulse-width-modulated (PWM) converters have been widely applied for power processing, and they are typically the stems of other types of converters, such as quasi-resonant, Z-source, and switched-inductor hybrid converters. Development of PWM converters has been spanning over a century, starting from the buck converter. The well-known PWM converters include buck, boost, buck–boost, Ćuk, single ended primary inductive converter (SEPIC), zeta, Z-source, quasi-Z source, etc. Many attempts have been proposed to develop these converters based mostly on canonical cell concepts and by introducing extra LC filters to the cells. This paper presents an enhancement to the layer and graft schemes by introducing the ideas of dc voltage/current offsetting, capacitor/inductor component splitting, diode grafting, and inverse operation of PWM converters. The PWM converters, which can be operated in continuous conduction mode (CCM) or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), therefore can be synthesized systematically according to decoded transfer gains. Decoding and synthesizing PWM converters uniquely bridge transfer gains to converter topologies and provide readers a comprehensive understanding of PWM-converter evolution from the original converter, the buck converter. Additionally, in this paper, the Ćuk, SEPIC, and zeta converters all with the same transfer gain of $D/(1 - D)$ are proved to be equivalent to the buck–boost converter with an extra LC filter. For further illustrating the proposed approaches, various types of Z-source converters, switched-capacitor/switched-inductor hybrid converters, and a single-stage interleaved converter are reviewed, and new PWM converters are developed. The increasing interest in multiphase drive systems has led to the extension of inverter topologies and pulse width modulation (PWM) methods from three-phase to multiphase occasions. Carrier-based PWM (CPWM) dominates space vector PWM when the phase number increases, because of its simple computation and modular implementation. Although intensive work has been done on modifying PWM methods to reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV), not enough work has been done on CPWM methods with CMV reduction for multiphase drives. This paper extends the phase-shifted sinusoidal PWM (PS-SPWM) method for five-phase and six-phase two-level voltage-source inverters (VSI) and employs the intersection-plotting method and Fourier analysis to reveal the nature of the CMV. Both experiment and simulation results comply with theoretical analysis that compared with the conventional SPWM, the PS-SPWM can effectively reduce the CMV in peak-to-peak value and RMS value, though it leads to a higher phase current distortion. Among multilevel converter topologies, the cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter is one suitable solution for multiple applications, such as flexible ac transmission systems and motor drives. CHB presents a natural high modularity because it is formed by the serial connection of H-bridges. This paper deals with a CHB where the cells do not have the same aging because the maintenance during the years of operation forces to replace some damaged cells of the converter with new or repaired ones. A method based on clamping one power cell can be used to reduce the power losses of that cell reducing its temperature and increasing its lifetime. However, clamping one cell of the CHB introduces high harmonic distortion around twice the carrier frequency due to the CHB unbalanced operation when a conventional phase-shifted pulsewidth modulation (PWM) is applied. A deep harmonic distortion analysis of the CHB output voltage with thermal control based on clamping one cell is presented. Using this analysis, the harmonic distortion at twice the carrier frequency is eliminated applying a nonconventional phase-shifted PWM where the angles between the carriers of consecutive power cells are modified. Experimental results show how the thermal control applying the clamping of a power cell is achieved while the harmonic distortion around twice the carrier frequency is eliminated. High step-down dc/dc converters are widely utilized in telecom and modern industrial applications. Due to the high step-down ratio, conventional Buck converter cannot provide satisfactory performance. To solve this problem, quite a few new topologies have been proposed to improve the performance of high step-down dc/dc converters, such as series-capacitor Buck (SC-Buck) converter, 3-level Buck converters, tapped inductor Buck converters, and LLC resonant converters. In this paper, the twice step-down benefit of SC-Buck converter and the zero-voltage switching benefit of series-capacitor tapped Buck (SC-TaB) converter are combined together to propose a new topology: interleaved series-capacitor tapped Buck (ISC-TaB) converter. To analyze the performance of the proposed ISC-TaB converter, the operation principles are discussed and the voltage conversion ratio is derived. In addition, to guide the design procedure and optimization, the current waveforms and voltage waveforms of the proposed ISC-TaB are derived. In order to verify the performance of the proposed ISC-TaB, hardware prototype of the proposed ISC-TaB converter and conventional two-phase series-capacitor tapped Buck converter (2ph-TaB) are designed and tested. The application is targeted at telecom with 48-V input and 3.3 V/20 A output. The test results are compared between these two converters. A peak efficiency of 95.6% is achieved on the proposed ISC-TaB and the efficiency of the ISC-TaB over all load range is at least 1% higher than that of 2ph-TaB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A bidirectional three-phase dc–ac converter with embedded dc–dc converter for bidirectional storage interface is proposed in this paper. With the help of the embedded dc–dc converter, the voltage of the storage battery can vary in a wide range. To minimize the power rating and power losses of the embedded dc–dc converter, a simple carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy with zero-sequence injection is proposed. By adopting the proposed PWM strategy, only a small ratio of total power needs to be processed by the embedded dc–dc converter, while most of the power is only processed by the three-phase dc–ac stage within a single conversion stage. As a result, quasi single-stage power conversion is achieved to improve the conversion efficiency of the overall dc–ac power system. Principles, characteristics, and implementations of the proposed three-phase dc–ac converter and its PWM strategy are analyzed in detail. Active pulsating power buffering (PPB) function can effectively reduce the twice-line frequency energy storage requirement in a single-phase rectifier. Existing single-phase solutions with active PPB must utilize more than two active switches in their circuits. Compared with conventional single-active-switch solutions without active PPB (e.g., a boost power-factor-correction (PFC) rectifier), the cost of additional semiconductor switches and gate drive circuitry in an active PPB-based rectifier may not be justified for low-power applications. This paper presents a family of single-switch single-phase rectifier with active PPB. Taking advantage of the on-time and off-time of a single switch, the proposed rectifiers are formulated by merging two converters that are duty and frequency controlled. The steady-state characteristics of these converters are analyzed. A step-by-step design procedure is provided, and an active control method for limiting the maximum switching frequency for wide-load-range operation is presented. A 100-W prototype is built for the demonstration of the proposed single-switch rectifier concept. It is envisaged that this concept, when combined with other circuit formulation techniques, e.g., partial power processing, dc-voltage feedback, may lead to new derivatives of single-switch rectifiers with more advanced features.
