This paper introduces a novel leaky least logarithmic absolute difference (LLLAD)-based control algorithm and a learning-based incremental conductance (LIC) maximum power point tracking algorithm for a grid-integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Here, a three-phase topology of the grid-integrated PV system is implemented, with the nonlinear/linear loads. The proposed LIC technique is an improved form of an incremental conductance (InC) algorithm, where inherent problems of the traditional InC technique, such as steady-state oscillations, slow dynamic responses, and fixed-step-size issues, are successfully mitigated. The prime objective of the proposed LLLAD control is to meet the active power requirement of the loads from the generated solar PV power, and after satisfying the load demand, the excess power is supplied to the grid. However, when the generated solar power is less than the load demand, then LLLAD meets the load by taking extra required power from the grid. During these power management processes, on the grid side, the power quality is maintained. During daytime, the proposed control technique provides load balancing, power factor correction, and harmonic filtering. Moreover, when solar irradiation is zero, then the dc-link capacitor and a voltage-source converter act as a distribution static compensator, which enhances the utilization factor of the system. The proposed techniques are modeled, and their performances are verified experimentally on a developed prototype in solar insolation variation conditions, unbalanced loading, and in different grid disturbances such as over- and undervoltage, phase imbalance, harmonics distortion in the grid voltage, etc. Test results have met the objectives of the proposed paper, and parameters are under the permissible limit, according to the IEEE-519 standard. This paper proposes a current control of dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) based on five-leg inverter. The five-leg inverter can be utilized to drive dual three-phase PMSM with full torque at slow speed when the conventional dual three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI) has a faulty inverter leg. Usually, the common leg in the five-leg inverter may have severe current stress. By dedicated selection of which two phases as a pair to share the common leg, its current rating is approximately half of current rating of other legs. Meanwhile, the five-leg inverter can fully fulfill the vector space decomposition control for dual three-phase PMSM, which has the same dynamical performance as the conventional dual three-phase VSI. However, due to the asymmetry of five-leg inverter non-linearity, the currents of dual three-phase PMSM are unbalanced. To mitigate this issue, the five-leg inverter non-linearity compensation is also introduced and investigated in this paper, whose effectiveness is verified by comparative experiments on a prototype dual three-phase PMSM. Fault tolerance in wind turbines is considered crucial to increase their reliability and availability levels. This paper presents a fault-tolerant direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) using new direct control techniques, with the ability to handle power semiconductor open-circuit faults in the full-scale back-to-back converter. The fault-tolerant topology consists of a five-leg converter, with a shared leg connected to a generator phase and to its corresponding grid phase, through a triode for alternating current (TRIAC). The main contribution of this paper consists of the development of an alternative direct torque control and direct power control schemes for both machine-side converter and grid-side converter, respectively. Moreover, a reliable fault diagnostics algorithm without requiring additional sensors is also integrated, providing the information required to instantaneously trigger fault-tolerant remedial strategies. This paper presents a novel seven-level inverter topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. It consists of eight active switches and two inner flying capacitor (FC) units forming a similar structure as in a conventional active neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) inverter. This unique arrangement reduces the number of active and passive components. A simple modulation technique reduces cost and complexity in the control system design without compromising reactive power capability. In addition, compared to major conventional seven-level inverter topologies, such as the neutral point clamped, FC, cascaded H-bridge, and ANPC topologies, the new topology reduces the dc-link voltage requirement by 50%. This recued dc-link voltage makes the new topology appealing for various industrial applications. Experimental results from a 2.2-kVA prototype are presented to support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. This paper presents bidirectional grid-connected modular multilevel converters (MMC) with direct digital control and division-summation processes to achieve power-injection and rectification functions. A direct digital control is developed to track current references, regulate dc-bus voltage and cell voltage, and balance the upper and lower dc-bus voltages. It can accommodate wide filter-inductance variation and take care of source voltage harmonics to achieve tight current tracking and low distortion output current. Based on the power-balance principle, the commands of arm currents can be determined directly. In this paper, the MMC configuration is introduced first, and then the control laws for current tracking and voltage regulation are derived in detail. A novel pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme for the decoupled and coordinated control of two parallel connected split-phase induction machines is discussed in this paper for the first time. Both the motors are operated from a single six-phase voltage source inverter which acts as a power source, and two switched capacitor-fed auxiliary inverters to limit the flow of nontorque producing currents in each motor. Both the motors can be operated at its full rated power with low switching frequency, and decoupled control for full power range can be achieved with the proposed topology. This is possible because the individual machines do not carry the load/harmonic currents of other machine (unlike the conventional series or parallel connected systems). The converters can be modulated using sine-triangle PWM or space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM). Furthermore, two different schemes of SVPWM techniques are proposed and compared in this paper. Exhaustive experimental results for all the modulation schemes are provided for steady state and transient operating conditions including start-up to validate the proposed topology and modulation schemes. A single-stage TRIAC (TRIode for alternating current switch) dimmable LED (light emitting diode) driver using a buck converter fed through a capacitor input rectifier provides many advantages such as small-scale implementation, low output current ripple, and stable dimming operation. This circuit topology, however, has a serious issue: A large inrush current to the smoothing capacitor. To solve this issue, this paper focuses on a bleeder circuit in the TRIAC dimmable LED driver. This paper presents the mechanism of the large inrush current issue and its relationship to a conventional bleeder circuit. Moreover, this paper proposes a turn-off delay controlled bleeder circuit. The proposed bleeder circuit is analyzed by using its discrete-time state-space model in order to set proper circuit parameters for inrush current reduction. Experimental results demonstrate the inrush current reduction by the proposed method, which leads to a 37% reduction of maximum input current, as well as proper dimming operation and low output current ripple. This paper presents an interleaved boost converter with a bifold Dickson voltage multiplier suitable for interfacing low-voltage renewable energy sources to high-voltage distribution buses and other applications that require a high-voltage-gain conversion ratio. The proposed converter was constructed from two stages: an interleaved boost stage, which contains two inductors operated by two low-side active switches, and a voltage multiplier cell (VMC) stage, which mainly consists of diodes and capacitors to increase the overall voltage gain. The proposed converter offers a high-voltage-gain ratio with low voltage stress on the semiconductor switches as well as the passive components. This allows the selection of efficient and compact components. Moreover, the required inductance that ensures operation in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) is lower than the one in the conventional interleaved boost converter. The distinction of the proposed converter is that the inductors’ currents are equal, regardless of the number of VMCs. Equal sharing of interleaved boost-stage currents reduces the conduction loss in the active switches as well as the inductors and thus improves the overall efficiency, as the conduction power loss is a quadratic function. In this paper, the theory of operation and steady-state analysis of the proposed converter are illustrated and verified by simulation results. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) are being used in wide range of power electronic applications. These converters have attracted a lot of attention during recent years and exist in different topologies with similar basic concepts. This paper presents five main submodules (SMs) to be used as the basic structures of MLIs. The paper reviews the common MLI topologies from the structural point of view. The topologies are divided into the different SMs to show conventional MLI configurations and future topologies that can be created from the main SMs. A comparative study between different topologies is performed in detail. The MLIs are categorized and investigated with from different perspectives such as the number of components, the ability to create inherent negative voltage, working in regeneration mode and using single dc source. The efficient mitigation of the detrimental effects of a fault in complex systems requires online fault diagnosis techniques that are able to identify the cause of an observable anomaly. However, an individual diagnosis model can only acquire a limited diagnostic effect and may be insufficient for a particular application. In this paper, a Bayesian network-based probabilistic ensemble learning (PEL-BN) strategy is proposed to address the aforementioned issue. First, an ensemble index is proposed to evaluate the candidate diagnosis models in a probabilistic manner so that the diagnosis models with better diagnosis performance can be selected. Then, based on the selected classifiers, the architecture of the Bayesian network can be constructed using the proposed three types of basic topologies. Finally, the advantages of different diagnosis models are integrated using the developed Bayesian network, and thus, the fault causes of the observable anomaly can be accurately inferred. In addition, the proposed method can effectively capture the mixed fault characteristics of multifaults (MFs) by integrating decisions derived from different diagnosis models. Hence, this method can also provide a feasible solution for diagnosing MFs in real industrial processes. A simulation process and a real industrial process are adopted to verify the performance of the proposed method, and the experimental results illustrate that the proposed PEL-BN strategy improves the diagnosis performance of single faults and is a feasible solution for MF diagnosis. Note to Practitioners—The focus of this paper is to develop a probabilistic ensemble learning strategy based on the Bayesian network (PEL-BN) to diagnose different kinds of faults in industrial processes. The PEL-BN strategy can automatically select the base classifiers to establish the architecture of the Bayesian network. The number of applicable carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) patterns increases with the growth of output levels in scalable multilevel topologies, such as active-neutral-point-clamped (ANPC) converters. Therefore, it is hard to optimize PWM for such topology, especially with large output levels. In this paper, a simplified and modular carrier-based PWM design approach for multilevel ANPC converters is proposed. Inspired by the decomposition theory, the topology decomposition is introduced in this paper to decompose an N-level ANPC converter into low-level subtopologies. Then, the complete set of applicable PWM patterns is derived based on ANPC operation principles, which makes it possible to optimize the performance based on the various requirements in applications. Meanwhile, the carrier-based PWM is implemented through the utilization of subtopologies with low-level modulation schemes, such that the design process of carrier-based PWM is greatly simplified and modularly realized. Both the complete PWM patterns and PWM design examples with experimental results of several ANPC converters are provided to show the feasibility and modularity of the proposed method. The use of electronic equipment and other dc-compatible appliances in homes and offices is increasing at a very fast rate, as well as the distributed generation of energy. These two statements will most likely trigger, in a near future, the adoption of district-scale dc grids, connecting dc microgeneration plants and consumers, in an effort to cut the number of conversion steps required to deliver power to dc appliances. DC–DC converters will be fundamental in these systems, allowing the establishment of several voltage levels. The reliability of these converters plays a critical role, ensuring service continuity of the loads connected to them. With the increment of reliability in mind, this paper proposes a simple yet effective open-circuit fault diagnostic method suitable for interleaved dc–dc boost converters, but equally functional for other dc–dc converter topologies. The improvements introduced in this paper greatly simplify the diagnostic action, while making the correct diagnostic of faults independent of the switching duty cycle. Moreover, an alternative reconfiguration scheme is proposed to mitigate the adverse impacts of such faults. Geared devices are commonly used to match the operating speed and torque of the power source with the second mover. Such geared devices are usually mechanical gears. As counterparts of the conventional mechanical gears, magnetic gears (MGs) are becoming promising devices, mainly due to the merits of physical isolation between moving parts, no gear lubrication, no mechanical fatigue, inherent overload protection and reduced maintenance, etc. Recently, several new topologies have been proposed to achieve better performances. In this paper, a general review of MGs is presented, including a discussion of the most common and upcoming topologies and a description of the working principle. A comparison of different topologies is carried out in terms of gear ratio and torque density. The main computational techniques generally adopted for coaxial MGs are listed and described. Some key aspects concerning the design, the existed challenges, and potential applications are also discussed. Reduced switch active phase converters (APC) are cost-effective solutions for running three-phase loads from single-phase grids. This paper proposes a novel auxiliary-capacitor-based APC (AC-APC) for this application. The combination of the topological location of the auxiliary capacitor and the control of the AC-APC reduces current stress on the semiconductor devices. In this paper, a selection criterion for the optimal auxiliary capacitor value is formulated to reduce the device currents in such a way that the overall efficiency is enhanced. This paper presents a comparative analysis of converter volt-ampere (VA) rating and device power loss for conventional H-bridge active front-end and inverter-based topology, APC, and AC-APC. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed AC-APC, an experimental study is conducted on the APC and the AC-APC feeding a 3-hp three-phase induction motor. At a full load of $\text{2.5}\,\text{kW}$ and $\text{0.8 } \text{power factor}$ , the measured maximum efficiency of the AC-APC is $2\%$ higher than that of the APC. Electric motors have a wide range of applications in a diverse range of industries. This paper presents a novel magnetic resonant coupling motor (MRCM), constructed without any iron or permanent-magnet core, i.e., a novel coreless and magnetless electric motor. Different from the conventional operation principle of existing electric motors, the application of the wireless power transfer system using magnetic resonant coupling technology is the key feature of the proposed MRCM. By adjusting the excitation frequency in accordance with the trajectory of resonant frequency splitting, a large electromagnetic force in different direction can be developed. In medium-voltage drives, multistep model predictive control (MPC) can lower the total harmonic distortion of the stator currents and thereby reduce losses and improve efficiency. However, from the point of view of implementation, there is still uncertainty as to whether transients have a major adverse effect on achieving this improved steady-state performance. The time-varying nature of machine drives, initialization of the optimization process, and limited computational resources are identified as key factors. This paper analyzes the link between these key factors in detail, thus a suitable reformulation and selective initialization approach is designed to enable the deterministic use of multistep finite-control-set MPC irrespective of the drive system conditions. Guidelines to select the prediction horizon, weighting factor, and minimum switching frequency considering the control platform limitations are presented. The significant impacts of transients on the design and experimental validation, covering several drive conditions, are evaluated in a scaled-down three-level induction machine drive switching at 350 Hz. This paper presents a balancing algorithm for the so-called Director Switch, a controlled, reverse conducting, self-powered, high-voltage switch, using series-connected insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). This is a key component on two new voltage-source, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter topologies. These, which promise efficiency, cost, and size reductions, are an alternate arm converter and a series bridge converter. One of the main design challenges of the director switch is how to supply the IGBT gate drivers, and other auxiliary electronics while overcoming the high-voltage insulation barrier to ground level. In this paper, this is achieved by using the energy stored in a capacitive clamp snubber circuit, which also helps with the overvoltage mitigation during rare hard-switching events. However, the clamp capacitor and by proxy the IGBT voltages become highly unbalanced during operation, compromising the integrity of the switch. This paper presents a balancing strategy that consists in applying a controlled delay in the switching of the IGBT levels, in a way that forces a voltage balance on all the switch levels. Then, the balancing strategy is explained and validated on simulation and on a high-voltage experimental rig, on switches comprising two and three series-connected IGBTs, respectively. This paper proposes a new class of topologies of single-stage high-frequency ac-link power converters, which is capable of providing both voltage step up/down within a wide frequency and voltage ranges. The proposed family, which supports bidirectional power flow, can interface various single/multi-port dc and/or single/multi-phase ac systems to provide dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, or ac–ac power conversion. In this family of converter, which offers a very modular structure, a small inductor that forms the link exchanges power entirely or partially between the source and load. The proposed family can function in buck, boost, and/or buck–boost modes of operation, and a combination of these modes of operation is also feasible. In comparison to the parallel inductive four-quadrant link converters, the proposed family features a significantly reduced link peak current, reduced switch ratings, and reduced total number of power switches. These features enhance the efficiency, reduce the total cost, and increase the power density of the system. In order to further improve the overall efficiency of the system, minimize the current/voltage stress over all utilized semiconductor devices, and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI), a small capacitor is placed in parallel with the link inductor to realize soft-switching operation for the proposed configurations. Moreover, the proposed converters have the potential to incorporate a lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer for electrical isolation. The proposed circuit topologies prevent reverse recovery issues and eliminate losses corresponding to body diodes of power switching devices via utilizing power switches in conjunction with external fast recovery diodes. The proposed family offers a very high level of reliability owing to its immunity from short circuit of input and output terminals and open circuit of the link inductor, which may occur in other power converters due to commutation problem resulting from a short deadtime or an overlap time between switches, unwanted control command, delay in electronic circuits, or EMI noise's misgating on or off, in addition to the absence of electrolytic capacitors in the power circuit. A control approach is also developed to regulate input and output currents in one stage of power conversion. A detailed theoretical analysis, operation, design methodology, and control strategy of the proposed family are provided in this paper, and the effectiveness and performance of the proposed converter family are verified via simulation results and experimentally. In low-power applications of photovoltaic (PV) systems, the transformerless grid-connected inverters have been preferred to increase the efficiency and reduce the cost, size, and power losses when they are compared to the ones with the transformer. A transformerless single-phase inverter topology with a single dc-link capacitor for the grid-connected PV systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed inverter has been simulated by using a cooperation process of the MATLAB and SPICE package programs and it has been implemented for experimental verification. The proposed inverter reduces the high-frequency common-mode leakage current caused by parasitic capacitances of PV panels, whereas it is controlled with the unipolar sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation. Also, the results show that the common-mode voltage remains constant. The efficiency of the proposed inverter has been compared to that of the most common topologies having the dc-link decoupling during the zero voltage states. This paper proposes a novel isolated bidirectional two-switch flyback converter with two integrated non-dissipative inductor–capacitor–diode (LCD) snubbers. In the proposed topology, the main flyback transformer and the LCD snubbers are cross coupled to minimize circulating current that would occur in the non-cross-coupled case, in addition to recycle leakage energy and protect the power transistors. The same current circulation issue also occurs in the bidirectional flyback converter with conventional resistor–capacitor–diode (RCD) snubbers. The main objective of this paper is to illustrate this issue and propose an alternate circuitry to reduce the current circulation and improve the conversion efficiency. In this paper, the power handling capability of microstrip filters is studied in detail. This paper is addressed from two perspectives, depending on the physical phenomenon limiting the maximum power that the microstrip filter can handle. One of these phenomena is air breakdown or corona effect, which is linked to the peak power handling capability (PPHC) of the device, and the other is the self-heating, which limits the device average power handling capability (APHC). The analysis is focused on three kinds of filtering topologies widely used both in academia and industry, such as the coupled-line, stepped impedance resonator and the dual-behavior resonator-based filters. Closed-form expressions are computed to predict both the PPHC and the APHC as a function of the geometrical parameters of the resonators integrating the filter. Guidelines are also given to extrapolate the provided computations to other filtering topologies based on other kinds of resonators. To validate this research study, three bandpass filters centered at 5 GHz have been implemented and fully characterized by means of two measurements campaigns which have been carried out, one for the PPHC and another one for the APHC. With the increasing proliferation of variable speed drive, the demand for the more reliable drive is also on the rise. Despite the growing interest on more advanced motors like permanent magnet and flux switching motors, three-phase induction motors (3ph-IMs) are still the main workhorse in the industry and hence the fault-tolerant control of these motor drives remains an interesting and important topic. In this paper, a simple fault-tolerant field-oriented control technique for 3ph-IMs is presented. It is shown that by injecting zero-sequence compensation voltage in a feedforward manner, open-circuit faults can be effectively tolerated. Compared to the previous feedforward fault-tolerant control methods, the proposed approach does not require the knowledge of the magnetizing inductance, which is tricky to be obtained in induction motors. Furthermore, the unified feedforward approach allows the same control structure to be used for different fault-tolerant 3ph-IMs drive topologies, with minor modifications to the feedforward terms. In addition, the effect of inverter non-idealities on the performance of the proposed control method is also highlighted and addressed. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified using MATLAB simulation and further validated using experimental tests. In this paper, a novel high-conversion-ratio isolated bidirectional dc–dc converter for distributed energy storage systems is proposed. In the buck mode, the proposed converter is equivalent to that of a cascade consisting of an isolated buck–boost converter and a buck converter, thus achieving a high step-down ratio. Likewise, in the boost mode, the converter is equivalent to the cascaded structure consisting of a boost converter and an isolated buck–boost converter, and then, a high step-up ratio is achieved. Therefore, the proposed topology exhibits a high conversion ratio with low transformer turns ratio, improving the efficiency of high-frequency transformers and the integration and reliability of the control system. In addition, voltage spikes caused by the leakage inductance can be avoided as the leakage inductance energy is released to capacitors in a high-voltage side or a low-voltage side. Moreover, a zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation reduces switching losses and improves the conversion efficiency. The operating principles and theoretical derivations of the proposed converter along with ZVS implementations are discussed in detail in this paper. In this paper, a new class of bidirectional partial-resonance power converters is presented. The proposed family can be configured to interface single- or multi-port dc, single- or multi-phase ac systems at input-side and/or output-side. The proposed family offers a very modular structure, which can lead to cost reduction from a common designed module. In this converter, which accomplishes power conversion in a single stage, a small inductor placed in series with the input and output switch-bridges forms the link. This small link inductor is responsible for transferring power between different ports of the system. The proposed topologies can operate in buck, boost, and buck–boost modes of operation to step up and/or step down the voltage. In buck–boost mode of operation, the converter is controlled such that the power is entirely transferred through the link inductor; whereas, in buck or boost modes of operation only a fraction of the power is transferred through the link inductor, and the remaining power is directly transferred from input phases to the output phases. Galvanic isolation, which is typically a prominent factor contributing to power density of a converter, can be provided by means of a compact and lightweight single-phase high-frequency transformer added to the link. In comparison with earlier generations of partial-resonance inductive-link power converters, in the proposed converter, the level of link peak current and consequently power-loss, as well as voltage and current stress of switches are dramatically decreased. A very small film capacitor can be placed in parallel with the link inductor to facilitate zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation for all the switches/diodes. Apart from increasing the overall efficiency, minimized dv/dt stress and improvement in power density are achieved by adding the link capacitor. The proposed converter employs four-quadrant switches, i.e., bidirectional-conducting bidirectional-blocking switches, and charges the link inductor in both positive and negative directions in each cycle. In view of this, better utilization of the link inductor and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) are offered. Furthermore, two distinct switching algorithms are developed for the proposed family of converters. In this paper, the detailed behavior of the proposed family is investigated analytically, and simulation and experimental results are presented to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed converter. This paper describes a dc-link voltage control method of a single-phase back-to-back cascaded H-bridge inverter (SBCI) for a medium-voltage motor drive system. The main advantage of the SBCI topology over the conventional regenerative cascaded H-bridge topology with a three-phase active front-end (AFE) is a simple system structure, which is composed of an input transformer, a power cell, a current sensor, etc. However, the challenging points of the SBCI are larger voltage ripple in the dc-link capacitor and imbalance of dc-link voltages of each phase. The asymmetric dc-link voltage of each power cells could cause unstable operation such as over-modulation due to the lack of the dc-link voltage of a particular phase and result in over-voltage or under-voltage faults. In this paper, the control strategy of the dc-link voltage for the SBCI that uses the negative-sequence voltage of the converter is described. The proposed control method is verified with a computer simulation whose target is a 6.6-kV–1.25-MW medium-voltage drive system. Also, through the experimental setup with the prototype SBCI whose power rating is 16.2 kVA, the dc-link voltage of each AFE has been controlled within a 0.5% error of its reference value at the full load. In this paper, we apply a level-set (LS) topological optimization (TO) algorithm to the design of multi-material heatsinks suitable for electronics thermal management. This approach is intended to exploit the potential of metal powder additive manufacturing technologies, which enable the fabrication of complex designs. This paper details the state-of-the-art in TO before defining a numerical framework for optimization of two-material and three-material based heatsink designs. The modeling framework is then applied to design a pure copper and a copper–aluminum heatsink for a simplified electronics cooling scenario and the performance of these designs are compared. The benefits and drawbacks of the implemented approach are discussed, along with enhancements that could be integrated within the framework. A benchmarking study is also detailed, which compares the performance of topologically optimized heatsink against a conventional pin-fin heatsink. This is the first time that TO methods have been assessed for multi-material heatsink design where both conduction and convection are included in the analysis. Hence, the reported paper is novel in its application of a state-of-the-art LS topology optimization algorithm to design multi-material structures subject to forced convective cooling. This paper is intended to demonstrate the applicability of TO to the design of multi-material heatsinks fabricated using additive manufacturing processes and succeeds in this objective. This paper also discusses challenges, which need to be addressed in order to progress this modeling as a design approach for practical engineering situations. For the popular second-order conic program (SOCP) formulation of AC optimal power flow (OPF) in a radial network, this paper first shows that it does not have the strong duality property in general. Then, through a series of restrictive reformulations, we derive a set of closed-form sufficient conditions on network parameters that ensure its strong duality. Numerical studies on IEEE 33-bus, 69-bus test networks and two real-world distribution systems confirm that non-negligible duality gaps do exist in this SOCP formulation, and also demonstrate the validity of the proposed sufficient conditions on closing the duality gap. In this article, the completely distributed adaptive time-varying formation target tracking control problem for quadrotor team via image-based visual servoing is addressed. An adaptive cascade formation controller is proposed, which consists of a trajectory tracking controller, an attitude controller, and an image-based visual servoing controller. All the controllers consist of a nominal part to achieve the desired performance and a robust part to retrain the influence of parameter uncertainties and external disturbance. The robust properties of the closed-loop control system are proven via the theoretical analysis. Distributed graph filters have recently found applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to solve distributed tasks such as reaching consensus, signal denoising, and reconstruction. However, when implemented over WSNs, the graph filters should deal with network limited energy constraints as well as processing and communication capabilities. Quantization plays a fundamental role to improve the latter but its effects on distributed graph filtering are little understood. WSNs are also prone to random link losses due to noise and interference. In this instance, the filter output is affected by both the quantization error and the topological randomness error, which, if it is not properly accounted in the filter design phase, may lead to an accumulated error through the filtering iterations and significantly degrade the performance. In this paper, we analyze how quantization affects distributed graph filtering over both time-invariant and time-varying graphs. We bring insights on the quantization effects for the two most common graph filters: the finite impulse response (FIR) and autoregressive moving average (ARMA) graph filter. Besides providing a comprehensive analysis, we devise theoretical performance guarantees on the filter performance when the quantization stepsize is fixed or changes dynamically over the filtering iterations. For FIR filters, we show that a dynamic quantization stepsize leads to more reduction of the quantization noise than in the fixed-stepsize quantization. For ARMA graph filters, we show that decreasing the quantization stepsize over the iterations reduces the quantization noise to zero at the steady-state. In addition, we propose robust filter design strategies that minimize the quantization noise for both time-invariant and time-varying networks. Numerical experiments on synthetic and two real data sets corroborate our findings and show the different trade-offs between quantization bits, filter order, and robustness to topological randomness. Data center networks typically adopt multi-rooted tree topologies to provide high bisection bandwidth. Various fine-grained load balancing schemes have been proposed to split flows across multiple paths. However, data center networks suffer from many uncertainties such as highly dynamic traffic. These uncertainties easily make network become asymmetric, resulting in significant packet reordering. Unfortunately, existing solutions passively deal with packet reordering based on a threshold and hardly adapt to asymmetric networks because of lacking the explicit reordering feedback. These solutions either fail to quickly respond to packet loss or cause unnecessary fast retransmission, which reduces link utilization and increases flow completion time. In this paper, we propose a fine-grained load balancing scheme RMC to eliminate the impact of packet reordering and handle uncertainties in asymmetric networks. To avoid unnecessary fast retransmission, the switch proactively identifies reordered packet according to local queue length and global path latency. Furthermore, we employ a coding technique with redundancy optimization to reduce long-tailed flow completion time under network asymmetry. Through a series of large-scale NS2 simulations and testbed experiments, we demonstrate that RMC effectively avoids unnecessary fast retransmission under different network scenarios and reduces flow completion time by up to 72% compared with state-of-the-art schemes. This paper presents an isolated single-stage on-board electric vehicle charger without an intermediate DC-link. Based on an isolated current-source topology, the converter features soft-switching in semiconductors regardless of load variation for the full AC line voltage range. Moreover, it requires no external snubber or clamp circuits. The power factor correction and voltage regulation are provided by a relatively simple phase shift modulation, while the amount of circulating energy is kept at minimum. The charger is distinguished by its efficiency characteristic – the maximum is achieved in the constant power charging mode. The control method, component stresses, and design constraints of the topology are analyzed. The concept is verified using a 3 kW experimental SiC-based prototype, which reaches a peak efficiency of 96.4%. DC technology has gained considerable interest in the medium voltage applications due to the benefits over the AC counterpart. However, to utilize the full capacity of this development, the selection of a suitable power electronic converter topology is a key aspect. From the pool of voltage source converters (VSC's), it is unclear which topology is suitable for multi-megawatt applications at medium voltage dc (MVdc) levels. To address this, the paper proposes a selection guideline based on reliability and optimum redundancy levels of VSCs for MVdc applications. This will be combined with other functional factors such as operational efficiency and return-on-investment. Three candidate multi-level topologies namely three-level neutral point clamped converter (3L-NPC), modular multi-level converter (MMC) and cascaded 3L-NPC (which is being used for the first MVdc link in the U.K.) have been evaluated over two-level-VSC from $\pm$ 10 kV to $\pm$ 50 kV. Energy management in modular type converters constitutes a key aspect of their operational stability. This paper introduces a full energy management structure for the Extended Overlap-Alternate Arm Converter (EO-AAC) ensuring both equal energy distribution across all six stacks and the maintaining of ripple-free DC current during steady state. The performance of the control structure against active power step events is validated by detailed simulations using EMTP-RV software. Moreover, the full energy management allows the EO-AAC to have an equivalent controllability to Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) through only two conducting stacks in overlap mode ensuring the power balance. From this observation, it is demonstrated that the use of control strategy like the virtual capacitor to support HVDC system, originally designed for MMC, is possible. This paper proposes an inequality constraints based method to efficiently and quickly estimate stability regions of droop control slopes for modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based multi-terminal dc (MTDC) systems. At first, a general small-signal model of the MMC-MTDC system is developed, which consists of the dc network and the MMCs with $dq$ controllers and multiple droop controllers. When deriving corresponding nonlinear state-space models, the edge-node matrix is introduced for the dc network modeling with arbitrary grid topology and transmission line model. Then, based on the eigenvalues sensitivity and the Taylor Series of eigenvalues, a set of inequality constraints are proposed to expeditiously estimate the suprema of the droop slopes and identify the droop slope stability regions for the MMC-MTDC system. To verify the state-space model, a comparison of dynamic responses between the math model calculation in MATLAB and the EMT simulation in PSCAD/EMTDC is conducted, which demonstrates the accuracy and the correctness of the developed small-signal model. The effectiveness of the proposed parameter stability region estimation method is demonstrated by several examinations including the supremum tests of droop slopes, the stability region sketches on accuracy, and the predicted unstable operations in PSCAD/EMTDC. The regulation of active power flowing through one or multiple DC lines plays an important role to guarantee secure and economic operations of high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids. This paper proposes a new method to regulate DC line power flow based on the adaptive DC voltage droop control strategy in which the voltage references of the voltage droop controllers vary autonomously at post-contingencies. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it can avoid installation of extra equipment and thus the associated losses and costs in the power-converter-based power flow control methods. The proposed control approach does not require to solve online global AC-DC power flow equations, leading to autonomous control. Furthermore, the adaptive droop control does not influence the stability of the HVDC grid since only the droop voltage references vary, but not the droop coefficients. To improve the torque accuracy for open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OEW-PMSM) with common dc bus, it is necessary to eliminate the zero-sequence torque (ZST) caused by zero-sequence current (ZSC) and the third back electromotive force. But the third flux linkage mismatch can enlarge ZSC which causes torque ripple. To deal with the above problem, firstly, a q-axis current injection method combined with deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) is adopted to inject an extra current into the reference q-axis current. The extra torque generated by this injected current can compensate for ZST. Secondly, to ensure the accuracy of the q-axis injected current, a parameter identification method based on recursive least square (RLS) algorithm with forgetting factor is presented to identify the third flux linkage accurately. The identification value can reduce ZSC and torque ripple under different working conditions. And the accurate q-axis injected current can be obtained to counteract ZST and output accurate torque. Finally, three methods are comparatively analyzed in this paper, namely the traditional DPCC method, the DPCC method with q-axis current injection and the proposed DPCC method based on RLS with forgetting factor. It has been proved that dual-armature permanent magnet (PM) machines have higher power density than conventional PM machines under the same copper loss. However, the thermal conditions of these machines are different. This paper makes a fair comparison between a dual-armature linear switched flux PM machine (DALSFPMM) and a linear surface-mounted PM machine (LSPMM) by considering both electromagnetic performances and thermal conditions. First, the topologies of two machines and platform are introduced. Then, the 2D and 3D finite element (FE) models are employed for the electromagnetic and thermal analyses, respectively. During the machine optimization, the thermal analysis is used to determine the copper loss under the fixed machine dimensions, while the electromagnetic analysis is used to optimize the machine dimensions under the fixed copper loss. After iterations, two machines are optimized and their performances are compared. Under the limitations of 80 °C maximum PM temperature and 120 °C maximum winding temperature, the DALSFPMM can exhibit 38% higher thrust force density for the continuous duty and up to 43% higher thrust force density for the short-time duty. This paper presents a control moment gyroscope (CMG) for small satellites, driven and controlled based on axial flux motor principle. The presented structure is coreless with Halbach array rotor and a stator to control the rotational speed/torque and effective gimbal rate/ angle. This topology allows a relatively simple mechanical structure with an equivalent dual gimbal control for limited angle. There are two sets of windings for torque generation along three orthogonal axes, one is 8 pole and other is 6 pole. The winding structure is novel in the sense of accommodating different number of poles $ (>\!4)$ using the same stator slots. Two 3 phase inverters are used to accurately control the torques by energising two sets of windings. Analytical formulation is provided to understand various torque generation mechanisms and 3D FEM simulations are performed to verify the operation and to get better quantitative torque generation capabilities of the CMG along different axes. Finally, a quick experiment prototype is developed to verify the operation with open loop speed control and closed loop tilt position control more qualitatively with off the shelf available components. This paper presents a new single-source three-phase seven-level inverter with an inherent three-time voltage boosting capability for medium-voltage applications. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of two switched-capacitor (SC) networks with an added half-bridge module per phase. Each of such integrated SC networks requires a single capacitor associated with three active power switches. The three-time voltage boosting feature of the proposed topology can reduce the dc-link voltage requirements by 50% in comparison to the traditional neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors, active NPC (ANPC), hybrid clamped ANPC, and cascaded H-bridge topologies, and 75% to advanced ANPC topologies. It can also reduce the number of required switches and capacitors as well as their voltage stresses compared to those state-of-the-art topologies reported in the literature. By integrating “n” number of added SC networks in the proposed seven-level basic topology, the number of output voltage levels can be extended to 2n+3 per phase. A finite control set model predictive control algorithm is also derived to control the converter in both the active and reactive power exchanges modes without distorting the generated grid current quality. The capacitor voltage balancing is inherent in the proposed topology, and thus, there is no need for any additional voltage balancing circuit, which further reduces the control complexity. In this paper, considering the oceanic multiple degree of freedom motion, a double stator linear-rotary permanent magnet (DSLRPM) generator with Halbach PM array is proposed for direct drive ocean energy conversion. It focuses on the power maximization generation resulting in a highly optimized DSLRPM generator to improve the generated power of the ocean energy conversion system in complex ocean condition. Based on the power-oriented design concept, the whole design process is divided into two steps. In the initial design procedure, the operating domain design is conducted, and the design point is selected. In the optimization design procedure, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) coupled with response surface methodology (RSM) and sensitivity analysis is proposed to be as an optimization design technique. Finally, a prototype based on the optimized results is manufactured. The experimental results agree with the simulated result, and they both reveal that the proposed method can offer an effective design and optimization for the DSLRPM generator, where the multiple oceanic motions and complex operating conditions are considered. This paper presents the overall comparison of four possible topologies of linear switched reluctance motor with segmented secondary (LSRMSS) as candidates for vertical actuation systems. The analytical design approach which treats each unit of LSRM as independent force generator is applied to design the four machines. All the four machines can be seen as 2-unit force generator although they have different winding configurations and topologies. In this case, the four machines can be designed to have similar force profile due to the inherent modular characteristics of LSRMSS. Force production, active material mass, end effects, copper loss and thrust density have been considered as well as the dynamic performance. The results indicate that the topology with toroidally wound mover has the highest force density and payload ratio capability. Within the current global context, the coronavirus pandemic has led to an unprecedented surge in the Internet traffic, with most of the traffic represented by video. The improved wired and guided network infrastructure along with the emerging 5G networks enables the provisioning of increased bandwidth support while the virtualization introduced by the integration of Software Defined Networks (SDN) enables traffic management and remote orchestration of networking devices. However, the popularity and variety of multimedia-rich applications along with the increased number of users has led to an ever increasing pressure that these multimedia-rich content applications are placing on the underlying networks. Consequently, a simple increase in the system capacity will not be enough and an intelligent traffic management solution is required to enable the Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. In this context, this paper proposes a Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based framework within a multimedia-based SDN environment, that decides on the most suitable routing algorithm to be applied on the QoS-based traffic flows to improve QoS provisioning. The proposed RL-based solution was implemented and evaluated using an experimental setup under a realistic SDN environment and compared against other state-of-the-art solutions from the literature in terms of throughput, packet loss, latency, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and mean opinion score (MOS). The trace ratio optimization (TRO) problem consists of finding an orthonormal basis for the discriminative subspace that maximizes the ratio of two trace operators on two covariance matrices corresponding to two distinctive classes or signal components. The TRO problem is encountered in various signal processing problems such as dimensionality reduction, signal enhancement, and discriminative analysis. In this paper, we propose a distributed and adaptive algorithm for solving the TRO problem in the context of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), where the two matrices involved in the trace ratio operators correspond to the (unknown) spatial correlation of the sensor signals across the nodes in the network. We first focus on fully-connected networks where every node can communicate with each other, but only compressed signals observations can be shared to reduce the communication cost. After showing convergence, we modify the algorithm to operate in WSNs with more general topologies. Simulation results are provided to validate and complement the theoretical results. To analyze oscillation phenomenon caused by the interaction between converters and an AC grid, the impedance/admittance analysis method is a popular solution, in which each electrical component is represented by an external impedance/admittance matrix and a lumped matrix is formed for stability analysis. However, for converter-integrated power systems considering typical collector subsystems (e.g., the radial and the ring collector subsystems in wind farms and PV stations), the impedance network reduction to form the lumped impedance/admittance matrix (LIM/LAM) becomes complicated particularly for a ring collector subsystem, which affects the efficiency of the oscillation analysis. To address this problem, this paper proposes a method that can transform a typical topology of collector subsystems into a pure-parallel topology so that lumped admittance matrix is much easier to be derived. This paper introduces a network topology identification (TI) method based on deep neural networks (DNNs) for online applications. The proposed TI DNN utilizes the set of measurements used for state estimation to predict the actual network topology and offers low computational times along with high accuracy under a wide variety of testing scenarios. The training process of the TI DNN is duly discussed, and several deep learning heuristics that may be useful for similar implementations are provided. The bistatic backscatter architecture, with its extended range, enables flexible deployment opportunities for backscatter devices. In this paper, we study the placement of power beacons (PBs) in bistatic backscatter networks to maximize the guaranteed coverage distance (GCD), defined as the distance from the reader within which backscatter devices are able to satisfy a given quality-of-service constraint. This work departs from conventional energy source placement problems by considering the performance of the additional backscatter link on top of the energy transfer link. We adopt and optimize a symmetric PB placement scheme to maximize the GCD. The optimal PB placement under this scheme is obtained using either analytically tractable expressions or an efficient algorithm. Numerical results provide useful insights into the impacts of various system parameters on the PB placement and the resulting GCD, plus the advantages of the adopted symmetric placement scheme over other benchmark schemes. This paper considers the multiaccess coded caching systems formulated by Hachem et al., including a central server containing $N$ files connected to $K$ cache-less users through an error-free shared link, and $K$ cache-nodes, each equipped with a cache memory size of $M$ files. Each user has access to $L$ neighbouring cache-nodes with a cyclic wrap-around topology. The coded caching scheme proposed by Hachem et al. suffers from the case that $L$ does not divide $K$ , where the needed number of transmissions (a.k.a. load) is at most four times the load expression for the case where $L$ divides $K$. Our main contribution is to propose a novel transformation approach to smartly extend the schemes satisfying some conditions for the well known shared-link caching systems to the multiaccess caching systems. Then we can get many coded caching schemes with different subpacketizations for multiaccess coded caching system. These resulting schemes have the maximum local caching gain (i.e., the cached contents stored at any $L$ neighbouring cache-nodes are different such that the number of retrieval packets by each user from the connected cache-nodes is maximal) and the same coded caching gain as the original schemes. Applying the transformation approach to the well-known shared-link coded caching scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, we obtain a new multiaccess coded caching scheme that achieves the same load as the scheme of Hachem et al. but for any system parameters. Under the constraint of the cache placement used in this new multiaccess coded caching scheme, our delivery strategy is approximately optimal when $K$ is sufficiently large. Cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) is an emerging technology for beyond 5G with its promising features such as higher spectral efficiency and superior spatial diversity as compared to conventional multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology. The main working principle of cell-free mMIMO is that many distributed access points (APs) cooperate simultaneously to serve all the users within the network without creating cell boundaries. This paper considers the uplink of a cell-free mMIMO system utilizing the radio stripe network architecture with a sequential fronthaul between the APs. A novel uplink sequential processing algorithm is developed, which is proved to be optimal in both the maximum spectral efficiency (SE) and the minimum mean square error (MSE) sense. A detailed quantitative analysis of the fronthaul requirement or signaling of the proposed algorithm and its comparison with competing sub-optimal algorithms is provided. Key conclusions and implications are summarized in the form of corollaries. Based on the analytical and numerical simulation results, we conclude that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the fronthaul signaling, without compromising the communication performance. Efficient traffic control center (TCC) management requires roadside units (RSUs) to frequently update vehicles with traffic messages (TMs). RSUs are costly to road operators in terms of deployment and maintenance. Therefore, vehicular users expect the TCC to deliver high-quality and rapid responses to query requests on TMs through RSUs. This paper presents a novel RSU selection scheme based on a software-defined network (SDN) for traffic message transmission. In the proposed scheme, the RSU selection is determined by comparing the utility function calculated at the SDN controller. The SDN controller discovers the network connectivity topology through a cluster approach in which a cluster head (CH) is elected to report the network topology to the SDN controller. Furthermore, the SDN controller relies on the RSU selection manager to load existing RSU deployment techniques. In addition, a distance vector hop localization algorithm (DV-hop) is used to locate hidden RSUs to control signaling between the SDN controller and local controllers at RSUs. The proposed scheme achieves minimum latency and appropriate RSU management within a higher packet reception rate, which improves the selection of RSUs and traffic message delivery. Due to link unreliability and node mobility, the topology of a network typically changes with time. Little work has been conducted to address the dynamic broadcast problem in time-varying wireless multi-hop networks, especially under the popular Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR) interference model. In this paper, we study the dynamic broadcast problem in SINR-based time-varying directed acyclic multi-hop wireless networks formed by point-to-point wireless links. We consider the SINR-based link transmission rate model involved in the slot-based link scheduling. We first prove a tight upper bound for the broadcast capacity of the multi-hop wireless networks under study. We then propose an online max-weight Throughput-Optimal Dynamic Broadcast algorithm (TODB) which performs link weight allocation, link scheduling, and data forwarding for each time slot according to the current network connectivity and data reception rates of nodes. We derive the throughput-optimality of the TODB algorithm by proving that the broadcast throughput of TODB can achieve the aforementioned upper bound of the broadcast capacity.
