In this paper, a novel space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique for a five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed to eliminate the common-mode voltage (CMV). For the 5L-ANPC inverter, which produces a good output voltage performance and lowdv/dt, the total 125 voltage vectors can be generated, among which the proposed scheme employs only 19 voltage vectors producing a zero CMV. Due to the limitation of voltage vectors selected, the dc-link capacitor voltages of the 5L-ANPC inverter cannot be balanced by themselves. Therefore, the capacitor voltages of the inverter should be controlled by choosing the redundant switching states appropriately. An adaptive control of DPWM implementable in clamped-three-level inverters with two strings of photovoltaic (PV) panels in cascaded connection is proposed in this paper. The proposed modulation is developed based on the so-called circuit-level decoupling concept. It is able to provide balance line voltage even under unbalanced dc links. The unequal dc voltages appeared due to asymmetric maximum point of power trackings (MPPTs) are controlled by proper injection of zero-sequence voltage to the common mode voltage, while the total dc voltage is regulated based on the voltage commands generated by the MPPT of each string. Thus, both PV strings are able to be operated based on their MPPTs while there is almost no low-order harmonic distortion at the inverter output current. This paper presents a new multilevel selective harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (MSHE-PWM) technique for transformerless static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) system employing cascaded H-bridge inverter (CHI) configuration. The proposed MSHE-PWM method optimizes both the dc-voltage levels and the switching angles, enabling more harmonics to be eliminated without affecting the structure of the inverter circuit. The method provides constant switching angles and linear pattern of dc-voltage levels over the modulation index range. This in turns eliminates the tedious steps required for manipulating the offline calculated switching angles and therefore, easing the implementation of the MSHE-PWM for dynamic systems. Although the method relies on the availability of the variable dc-voltage levels which can be obtained by various topologies, however, the rapid growth and development in the field of power semiconductor devices led to produce high-efficiency dc-dc converters with a relatively high-voltage capacity and for simplicity, a buck dc-dc converter is considered in this paper. Current and voltage closed loop controllers are implemented for both the STATCOM and the buck converter to meet the reactive power demand at different loading conditions. The technique is further compared with an equivalent conventional carrier-based pulse-width modulation to illustrate its enhanced characteristics. In this paper, the concept of a modulated-ramp pulse-width modulation (PWM) generator is presented. The specific nonlinear behavior of this generator enables an exact linear control-to-output static conversion characteristic of DC-DC switching converters, such as the boost (step-up), buck/boost, Ćuk, or SEPIC, operating in continuous conduction mode. The resulting linearization leads to a significant improvement of the control accuracy and simplification of the converters, operating mainly in the open-loop architecture. In this paper, the concept of the modulated-ramp PWM generator is described, followed by a detailed steady-state and small-signal AC analysis. The key aspects for practical implementation are also highlighted. All results and benefits of the modulated-ramp PWM generator are demonstrated here on the boost converter power stage. This paper proposes a new space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SV-PWM) strategy for a three-level neutral point clamped inverter. The presented SV-PWM strategy makes it possible to control the neutral point voltage by optimum choice of switch sequence for any position and length of output voltage vector. The proposed solution takes into consideration the unbalance of the dc-link voltages. It also analyzes the influence of vector sequences on the predicted unbalance of the dc-link voltage. The solution allows selecting optimum vectors and their on-time durations in order to reduce quickly the dc-link voltage unbalance. The calculation of the space vector area proposed in this paper takes into consideration voltage unbalance and its influence on the length and position of vectors. The proposed approach assures properly generating the voltage output vectors, even in the case of the existing large voltage unbalance in the dc-link. A pulse skipping modulation (PSM) technique improves the light load efficiency in a dc–dc converter by selectively skipping a few clock pulses. However, in existing PSM schemes, the number of charge and/or skipped cycles cannot be predefined. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the ripple parameters and ensure a stable periodic behavior. Further, it becomes difficult to further minimize power losses under light load conditions. This paper proposes a voltage-mode digital pulse skipping modulator which uses a digital pulse-width-modulator (PWM) as a building block, thus making it easy to operate the system in both PWM and PSM modes. Unlike in existing PSM schemes, the sequence and the count of charge and skip cycles can be fully prespecified in the proposed scheme, with the number of skip cycles optimally chosen to maximize the efficiency. Stability analysis is carried out using discrete-time modeling, which provides guidelines to ensure a stable periodic operation with predictable ripple parameters. Small-signal modeling and design of the proposed PSM scheme are discussed. A prototype buck converter was fabricated and tested. The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is attractive for medium- and high-power applications because of its high modularity, availability, and power quality. In this paper, the current ripple on the dc link of the three-phase MMC derived from the phase-shifted carrier-based pulse-width modulation scheme is analyzed. A control strategy is proposed for the current ripple elimination. Through the regulation of the phase-shifted angles of the carrier waves in the three phases of the MMC, the current ripple on the dc link of the three-phase MMC can be effectively eliminated. In this paper, a generalized switching technique for cascaded H -bridge (CHB) converters is proposed. To take advantage of both low- and high-frequency modulation techniques, a hybrid modulation method is utilized. The proposed technique employs the low-frequency switching for voltage balancing of the dc-link capacitors, and the high-frequency sinusoidal pulse-width modulation switching for shaping the input ac current. Using the proposed technique, the stable operating region of CHB converters is extended. The proposed technique is capable of maintaining the dc voltages balanced even under critical operating conditions in which the load of one H-bridge cell is removed. It is important to improve the overall efficiency of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter when it is connected to the grid. Fundamentally, the conversion efficiency from dc to ac power of an inverter is important. However, in the presence of partial shading, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) on PV modules is more important than the conversion efficiency. In this paper, a new control method for a three-level inverter is proposed. With the proposed method, each dc-link voltage of the three-level inverter can be asymmetrically regulated. When PV modules are split into two and each split module is connected to the respective dc-link capacitors of the inverter, the asymmetric control can be helpful because separate MPPTs are possible. The effectiveness of the proposed method was examined through experiments with a T-type three-level inverter, where each dc-link capacitor was supplied by a PV simulator emulating two separate PV modules under different shading conditions. This paper presents an improved full-bridge three-level (IFBTL) dc/dc converter for a wind turbine in a dc grid by inserting a passive filter into the dc/dc converter to improve the performance of the converter. The passive filter can effectively reduce the voltage stress of the medium frequency transformer in the IFBTL dc/dc converter. A modulation strategy, including two operation modes, is proposed for the IFBTL dc/dc converter. Then, a voltage balancing control strategy is proposed for the IFBTL dc/dc converter. Furthermore, the control of the wind turbine based on the IFBTL dc/dc converter in a dc-grid system is presented. This paper deals with a cascaded multilevel converter which has multiple dc voltage values (multivoltage cascade converter or hybrid multilevel converter) for a 6.6-kV transformerless distribution static synchronous compensator (D-STATCOM). A control method is proposed to realize dc voltage regulation of series-connected multiple cells in the STATCOM operation, making it possible to remove dc sources from all H-bridge cells. The simplified configuration without the dc sources makes the STATCOM small and lightweight. A downscaled STATCOM model rated at 220 V and 10 kVA is built and a series of verification tests is executed. This paper proposes an active technique to reconstruct and balance the phase currents in multiphase dc-dc converters implementing both of voltage- and current-mode controls. Only one current sensor at the dc link is required to measure and reconstruct the phase currents. Multiple current samples in the pulsewidth modulation switching period are synchronized with the carrier waveforms to actively reconstruct the phase currents using a simple active balancing algorithm that is implemented in a digital controller. The proposed technique improves system performance, stability, and efficiency, and prevents inductor saturation. This paper presents a control strategy for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) using an indirect matrix converter, which consists of an input side matrix converter and an output side voltage source converter (VSC). The capability of the input converter to generate different “virtual dc link” voltage levels is exploited. The commutation of the VSI with reduced voltage is illustrated for operating points where the output voltage demand is low without any deterioration of the current control performance. The proposed method leads to a reduction in the commutation losses in the output converter and reduced common-mode voltage. For the input converter, soft switching commutation is obtained by synchronizing the input and output converter pulsewidth-modulation patterns. This modulation strategy is particularly applicable in DFIG applications because the required rotor voltage decreases when the DFIG speed is close to the synchronous speed. This paper presents a three-stage 18-level inverter design with a novel control method. The inverter consists of a series-connected main high-voltage, medium-voltage, and low-voltage stages. The high-voltage stage is made of a three-phase, six-switch conventional inverter. The medium- and low-voltage stages are made of three-level inverters constructed by H-bridge units. The proposed control strategy assumes a reference-input voltage vector and aims to operate the inverter in one state per sampling time to produce the nearest vector to that reference. The control concept is based on representing the reference voltage in 60^\circ-spaced two-axis coordinate system. In this system, the inverter vectors’ dimensions are integer multiples of the inverter's dc voltage, and the expression of the inverter's vectors in terms of its switching variables is straightforward. Consequently, the switching signals can be obtained by simple fixed-point calculations. The approach of the proposed control strategy has been presented, the transformed inverter vectors and their relation to the switching variables have been defined, and the implementation process has been described. The test results verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in terms of computational efficiency as well as the capability of the inverter to produce very low distorted voltage with low-switching losses.
