To explore the aging assessment method of the oil–paper insulation in power transformers, the polarization and depolarization current (PDC) characteristics of oil–paper composite insulation samples are investigated under high applied voltage. Based on the asymmetry of polarization absorption current and depolarization current and the polarity effect of insulation pressboard, the repeated polarization current test method is proposed. A novel aging characteristic parameter, which is the ratio of the normalized charge for the first polarization and the normalized charge for the second polarization, is extracted. The difference between the decay rates of the first polarization current and the second polarization current increases at first and then decreases with the polarization time, and decreases with increasing aging degree of the pressboard. The more serious the insulation aging is, the smaller the variation range of aging characteristic parameter with polarization time is, and the closer the value is to 1. With decrease in the DP, the maximum of aging characteristic parameter changes in a decreasing trend. The aging condition of the oil–paper composite insulation can be assessed by the repeated polarization current method and the relationship between the aging characteristic parameter and the polarization time. This paper describes a flow control of the dye in the paper mill with the quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) fed induction motor drive. More than a decade the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and current-source inverter (CSI) have been used to control the speed of the induction motor, which in turns controls the flow of dye. Recently, the matrix converter (MC) has been an excellent competitor for the VSI or CSI for its compactness. The voltage transfer ratio of the VSI, CSI, and MC has been limited to 0.866. Thus, the efficiency of these converters is less. To improve the voltage transfer ratio the quasi-Z-source network (QZSN) is to be used between voltage source and indirect MC (IMC). The modification in the shoot-through duty ratio of the QZSN varies the voltage transfer ratio greater than 0.866. Different voltage transfer ratios are needed for different voltage sag conditions. For a variation of the duty ratio of the QZSN, the fuzzy logic controller has been presented. To control the IMC vector control with space vector modulation has been presented. This paper proposes the implementation of QZSIMC adjustable speed drive for the flow control of dye in paper mill during different voltage sag conditions. A 4-kW prototype has been built and the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified with simulation results and experimental setup. Simulation is done in MATLAB, Simulink platform. Experimental setup is done with the aid of a TMS320F2812 (Texas Instrument) processor. The experimental results validate the maintenance of the speed of an induction motor at the set condition, thus controlling the perfect flow of dye in paper manufacturing technology. Paper-based digital microfluidic biochips (P-DMFBs) have recently emerged as a promising low-cost and fast-responsive platform for biochemical assays. In P-DMFBs, electrodes and control lines are printed on a piece of photograph paper using an inkjet printer and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) conductive ink. Compared with traditional digital microfluidic biochips (DMFBs), P-DMFBs enjoy significant advantages, such as faster in-place fabrication with printer and ink, lower costs, and better disposability. Since electrodes and CNT control lines are printed on the same side of this paper, a critical design challenge for P-DMFB is to prevent control interference between moving droplets and the voltages on CNT control lines. Control interference may result in unexpected droplet movements and thus incorrect assay outputs. To address this design challenge, a control-fluidic codesign methodology is proposed in this paper, along with two demonstrative design flows integrating both fluidic design and control design, i.e., the droplet-oriented codesign flow and the electrode-oriented codesign flow. The droplet-oriented flow is suitable for designing biochips with sparse electrodes and relatively larger number of droplets, whereas the electrode-oriented flow is suitable for biochips with dense electrodes and smaller number of droplets. The inherent constraints of grid‐forming converters affect their ability to maintain voltage source characteristics within a specific operational range. In response to these limitations, ongoing pilot projects involving grid‐forming technology have adjusted their current thresholds up to three times the rated current, significantly exceeding the traditionally threshold of 1.2 times the rated current. This paper aims to investigate the effects of current thresholds on the dynamic responses of grid‐forming converters under large disturbances, with the intention of identifying an optimal current threshold that meets the grid's demands for maintaining voltage source characteristics and overall stability. A novel power angle relationship is introduced, integrating current limits and anti‐windup voltage controls into the equivalent circuit models of these converters. Analytical expressions for stable and unstable equilibrium points are derived, improving insights into the converters' dynamic behaviour and their resilience to phase jumps across various current thresholds and short‐circuit ratios. Findings indicate that higher current thresholds substantially improve phase jump limits and withstand capabilities. An oil-paper insulation system which will withstand DC voltage under normal conditions is a key component of converter transformers as well as high voltage direct current (HVDC) bushings. When the system changes its state, operating overvoltage appears. This kind of overvoltage will consequently affect the application of oilimmersed facilities and the safety of entire grid. Therefore, this paper studies the charge coupling behavior of double-layer oil-paper insulation under DC and pulse voltages. From the research of different pulse voltage amplitudes, pulse numbers and polarity, conclusions can be drawn that, with the increase of the pulse voltage amplitudes, DC and pulse voltages in the same polarity cause the absolute value of the initial surface potential to decrease and then rise; while in different polarities, the charge with the same polarity as the pulse voltage increases. Furthermore, for the same pulse voltage, the absolute initial value of the DC voltage applied in the same polarity is higher than that in different polarities. Considering the pulse number effect, it is obvious that the initial value increases with the increase in the pulse number, and then reaches saturation. Also, with the increase in pulse number, the decay rate decreases and thus the charge is slowly dissipated. From the tdV/dt and the decay time curves, the peak value increases with the increase in the pulse number, while the characteristic time varies by the polarity of the DC and pulse voltages. Distributed Energies Resources (DERs) can be controlled for supporting the voltage regulation at nodes of an Active Distribution Network (ADN) where they are connected. However, since the ADN is a Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) system with coupled dynamics, the controller of a DER mutually interacts with all other controllers through the distribution lines. These interactions lead to operating conflicts which may drive the ADN to work close to its voltage stability boundaries. To achieve a stable voltage regulation without new investment in the existing ADNs, the present paper proposes a straightforward decentralized design of the multi-loop controllers based on the property of integral controllability. The main feature of the method is that the design problem can be expressed by a single parameter designed both for reducing the effects of the undesired coupling and for increasing the degree of robust stability in the presence of parameter uncertainty in the matrix plant. Simulation studies are developed to illustrate the design result and the performance achieved under different operating conditions. This paper proposes a dual-loop discrete-time adaptive control (DDAC) method for three-phase PWM rectifiers, which considers inductance-parameter-mismatched and DC load disturbances. A discrete-time model of the three-phase PWM rectifier is established using the forward Euler discretization method, and a dual-loop discrete-time feedback linearization control (DDFLC) is given. Based on the DDFLC, the DDAC is designed. Firstly, an adaptive inductance disturbance observer (AIDO) based on the gradient descent method is proposed in the current control loop. The AIDO is used to estimate lump disturbances caused by mismatched inductance parameters and then compensate for these disturbances in the current controller, ensuring its strong robustness to inductance parameters. Secondly, a load parameter adaptive law (LPAL) based on the discrete-time Lyapunov theory is proposed for the voltage control loop. The LPAL estimates the DC load parameter in real time and subsequently adjusts it in the voltage controller, achieving DC load adaptability. Finally, simulation and experimental results show that the DDAC exhibits better steady and dynamic performances, less current harmonic content than the DDFLC and the dual-loop discrete-time PI control (DDPIC), and a stronger robustness to inductance parameters and DC load disturbances. A machine learning‐based optimized droop method is suggested here to simultaneously reduce the production cost (PC) and power line losses (PLL) for a class of direct current (DC) microgrids (MGs). Traditionally, a communication‐less technique known as the hybrid droop method has been employed to decrease PC and PLL in DC MGs. However, achieving the desired reduction in either PC or PLL requires arbitrary adjustments of weighting coefficients for each distributed generator in the conventional hybrid droop method. To address this challenge, this paper introduces a systematic approach that capitalizes on the benefits of artificial intelligence to accurately predict both the PC and PLL in a DC MG. Furthermore, an optimization technique relying on the gradient descendent method is employed to independently optimize both PC and PLL for each scenario. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed through a comparative study with classical and hybrid droop coordination schemes under various scenarios such as rapid load changes. The transition from traditional to renewable energy sources is a critical issue in current energy-generation systems, which aims to address climate change and the increased demand for energy. This shift, however, imposes additional burdens on control systems to maintain power system stability and quality within predefined limits. Addressing these challenges, this paper proposes an innovative Modified Hybrid Fractional-Order (MHFO) automatic voltage regulator (AVR) equipped with a fractional-order tilt integral and proportional derivative with a filter plus a second-order derivative with a filter FOTI-PDND2N2 controller. This advanced controller combines the benefits of a (FOTI) controller, known for enhancing dynamic performance and steady-state response, with a (PDND2N2) controller to improve system robustness and adaptability. The proposed MHFO controller stands out with its nine tunable parameters, providing more extensive control options than the conventional three-parameter PID controller and the five-parameter FOPID controller. Furthermore, a recent optimization approach using a growth optimizer (GO) has been formulated and applied to optimally adjust the MHFO controller's parameters simultaneously. The performance of the proposed AVR based on the MHFO-GO controller is scrutinized by contrasting it with various established and developed optimization algorithms. The comparative study shows that the AVR based on the MHFO-GO controller surpasses other AVR controllers from the stability, robustness, and dynamic response speed points of view. During the energy transition, new types of electrical equipment, especially power electronic devices, are proposed to increase the flexibility of electricity distribution grids. One type is the solid-state transformer (SST), which offers excellent possibilities to improve the voltage quality in electricity distribution grids and integrate hybrid AC/DC grids. This paper compares SST to conventional copper-based power transformers (CPT) with and without an on-load tap changer (OLTC) and with additional downstream converters. For this purpose, a corresponding electricity distribution grid is set up in the power system analysis tool DIgSILENT PowerFactory 2022. A DC generator like a photovoltaic system, a DC load like an electric vehicle fast charging station, and an AC load are connected. Based on load flow simulations, the four power transformers are compared concerning voltage stability during a generator-based and a load-based scenario. The results of load flow simulations show that SSTs are most valuable when additional generators and loads are to be connected to the infrastructure, which would overload the existing grid equipment. The efficiency of using SSTs also depends on the parameters of the electrical grid, especially the lengths of the low-voltage (LV) lines. In addition, a flowchart-based decision process is proposed to support the decision-making process for the appropriate power transformer from an electrical perspective. Beyond these electrical properties, an evaluation matrix lists other relevant criteria like characteristics of the installation site, noise level, expected lifetime, and economic criteria that must be considered. Active Distribution Networks are Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems with coupled dynamics, which cause interactions among the control loops of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). This undesired effect leads to performance degradation of voltage control. To mitigate the effects of this unavoidable coupling, the present paper proposes a systematic design procedure based on the analysis of the interaction's sources. In detail, each DER is equipped with a double-loop PI to control the active and reactive power output of the voltage source converter, which connects the DER to the network's node. Furthermore, to guarantee ancillary services, the two loops are coupled by a simple mechanism of cooperation of the active power to voltage regulation realized by a filtered droop law. To achieve voltage regulation with reduced loop interactions, the PI parameters and the filter's pulse are designed according to a procedure with two sequential steps based on the Internal Model Control (IMC) technique. Simulation studies are finally presented to demonstrate that the proposed design method achieves both reduction of the loop interaction and robust voltage control in the presence of model parameter uncertainty in the MIMO plant, modeling various operating conditions of the ADN, including a step connection of large loads, renewable energy source variations, and changes in the substation transformer ratio. A power system stabilizer (PSS) is a control system integrated into the control structure of specific generation units within AC grids. It monitors current, voltage, and machine shaft speed. Analysing these variables, the PSS generates appropriate control signals to the voltage regulator unit, aiming to damp system oscillations. With the advancement of high‐voltage direct current (HVDC) overlaid high‐voltage alternative current (HVAC) grids, it is anticipated that direct current power system stabilizers (DC‐PSS) will be developed to perform a similar role as their AC counterparts. DC‐PSS will be responsible for monitoring and controlling DC voltage levels, ensuring stable operations. This paper focuses on DC‐PSS in HVDC grids, designed to ensure stable operation and mitigate voltage fluctuations. Unlike conventional AC power systems, HVDC includes only DC voltage and power. The input signal for DC‐PSS is the variations in DC voltage, and the output signal is proportional to the power changes at the specific bus where the DC‐PSS is installed, aiming to minimize DC voltage oscillations. Main insulation of windings connected with valves in high voltage direct current (HVDC) convert transformers withstands pulsating DC voltages. This paper presents breakdown properties of oil-impregnated paper under pulsating DC voltages at different temperatures. Progressive stress tests were carried out to obtain breakdown voltages of oil-impregnated paper with thickness of 0.2 mm under pulsating DC voltages at different temperatures. Constant stress tests were executed to measure time to breakdown of the oil-paper specimens. Both types of the experiments were also undertaken under either AC or DC voltages. An electrical aging lifetime model was proposed for the oil-impregnated paper, and parameters of the electrical aging lifetime model were presented. Subsynchronous oscillations have occurred in wind farms due to the high penetration of converter-based technology in power systems and may potentially lead to grid instability. As an effective solution, synchronous condensers, with their ability to control voltage and inject reactive power in the power system, are increasingly being adopted, as they can lead to the mitigation of such oscillations in weak grid conditions. However, the impact of synchronous condensers' power ratings on system stability is a topic that requires further investigation. In fact, an improper selection of a synchronous condenser's rating will not extinguish existing subsynchronous oscillations and may even cause the emergence of new oscillatory phenomena. This paper presents a novel examination of the impact that the synchronous condenser's power rating has on the small-signal stability of a wind farm with existing subsynchronous oscillations while being connected to a weak grid. The wind farm's model is developed using state-space modeling, centering on grid interconnection and incorporating the state-space submodel of a synchronous condenser to show its impact on subsynchronous oscillation mitigation. The stability analysis determines the optimal synchronous condenser's power ratings for suppressing these oscillations in the wind farm model. The findings are corroborated through time domain simulations and fast-Fourier transformation (FFT) analysis, which further validate the stability effects of a synchronous condenser's rating. In order to achieve the flexible and efficient utilization of distributed energy resources, microgrids (MGs) can enhance the self-healing capability of distribution systems. Conventional primary droop control in microgrids exhibits deviations in voltage and frequency and lacks research on voltage–frequency control during network reconfiguration. Therefore, this paper investigates the control strategy of secondary control for voltage and frequency during the process of reconstructing distribution networks to operate in the form of microgrids after faults. Firstly, the mathematical model of three-phase voltage-source inverters with droop control is analyzed. Then, inspired by the generator's secondary frequency control strategy, an improved secondary control method based on droop control is proposed, and the effectiveness of the improved droop control strategy is verified. Finally, simulation examples of distribution networks with various dynamic boundary topology changes are designed to simulate a relatively stable control result, validating the proposed strategy. The decarbonization of the power generation and transport sector encourage the analysis of connection of distributed energy resources (DER), such as electric vehicles (EVs), to the electrical system, as well as the evaluation of their impact on smart cities. A better understanding of the negative impacts on the power systems will lead to propose mitigation measures and eventually revolutionize the way distributed generation works. This paper aims at modelling and evaluating the impact of EVs on a real distribution network. The energy system chosen operates at 60 Hz, 34.5 kV (medium voltage) and 0.208 kV (low voltage) and it is simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC. To reproduce realistic user consumption profiles, dynamic load profiles based on EV owners behaviour have been simulated. The vehicle‐to‐grid (V2G) technology is modelled to mitigate the impacts of high penetration of EVs by supporting the network from undervoltage. The results show the importance of active management in modern power systems, especially considering the increase in DER penetration expected for the coming years. In this paper, an improved AC-link voltage matching control (IVM) strategy is proposed for the multiport modular multilevel DC transformer (M3DCT), which comprises a single-phase modular multilevel converter (MMC) and a series of cascaded H-bridge units. The objective of the proposed IVM strategy is to address the AC-link voltage mismatch phenomenon. Distinct from existing control methods, such as various phase-shifting control methods and the conventional AC-link voltage matching control strategy, the proposed IVM strategy orchestrates the operation of the M3DCT in an innovative fashion. It allows the sum of inserted submodule (SM) numbers in the upper and lower arms to be flexible, no longer confined to a specific SM number per arm. Consequently, the AC-link voltage of the M3DCT is maintained proximate to the matched operating condition, regardless of the degree of mismatch in the DC side voltage of the M3DCT. This enables the enhancement of the M3DCT's overall operational performance, particularly under conditions of light loads within medium-voltage DC (MVDC) distribution systems. This paper demonstrates that the switching of one grid‐connected virtual synchronous generator (VSG) between two control modes, namely constant voltage control (CVC) and current limiting control (CLC) happens at the derived two switching lines. Based on the current limiting inequality, the traditional current‐switched model is transferred to the angle‐switched model proposed here, and the system can be studied as one switched dynamic system. Based on this model, the transient stability of VSG with controller limits is investigated. This is achieved by constructing Lyapunov functions for each subsystem and deriving the relationship between the values of Lyapunov functions constructed under different conditions at the switching moment. The stability of the system is ensured when the Lyapunov function of each subsystem presents a decreasing trend in two consecutive switching intervals. On this basis, the stability boundary of the switching system is derived. Further analysis shows that optimal adjustment of the saturation current angle can make the system reach the maximum stability boundary. Virtual synchronous generator (VSG) technology has achieved some results in distributed generation networks and enhanced system stability. For problems that may occur in the system due to ignoring parameter linkages, this paper designs a synergistic controller that establishes the connection between the active frequency and the reactive voltage control loop based on synergy theory. As the output of the synergetic controller, the derived control law u is added to the power frequency control in the form of negative feedback. Two disturbance forms, a step disturbance, and a three-phase short-circuit fault, are set up. The conventional droop control and synergetic droop control results are compared using a MATLAB simulation system. Then, the system parameter variations were studied and analyzed, and the sensitivity of the control system with different values of parameters K1, K2, and K3 in the case of a three-phase short circuit was analyzed, which provides a reference guide for selecting parameters in later control optimization. Finally, the control effectiveness of a multi-machine VSG system was tested. Recently, it was stipulated in a publication that a missing elementary active-device termed "trancitor" by its designer could be made and could greatly simplify electronic circuits. This elementary device has been presented as a CCVS (Current Control Voltage Source), unlike a bipolar transistor which is a CCCS (Current Control Current Source). In the present paper, the electrical behavior of the CCVS-type trancitor in Silicon (Si), Germanium (Ge), Gallium arsenide (GaAs), Silicon Carbide (3C-SiC and 6H-SiC), Indium Nitride (InN) and Indium Phosphide (InP) technologies have been studied. The input-output transfer characteristics (Ix-Vy) of the p-type and n-type CCVS trancitors have been investigated. In addition, the effect of doping concentration on the n-type CCVS trancitor in Si technology has been studied. This study is based on TCAD (Technology Computer Aided Design) simulation. The results show that the Hall voltage of the CCVS trancitor depends on the electrical properties of the semiconductor material, such as carrier mobility (µ), band gap (Eg) and hole/electron effective mass (m). Moreover, these trancitors are compatible with the model proposed for the first time. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are susceptible to subsynchronous oscillations (SSOs) caused by impedance interactions in the power line. Current research into the stability of MMCs focuses mainly on voltage feed-forward control, while the effect of current feed-forward control is neglected. This paper proposes a current feed-forward compensation method based on impedance reshaping for standalone MMCs. Initially, an impedance model was developed to identify the stability risks caused by the interaction between the MMC and power line impedance. The proposed method feeds the current compensation signal into the modulation circuit, thereby improving the control signal and suppressing the impedance interaction between the MMC and the power line. The analysis of the harmonic state space (HSS) method verifies that the proposed approach effectively reduces the negative damping region in the frequency band where the SSO is located. Additionally, the impedance frequency scanning method confirms the accuracy of impedance modeling. Using the MATLAB/Simulink platform and StarSim HIL hardware-in-the-loop experimental platform, the SSO phenomenon of the MMC is simulated, and the results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress harmonic currents during SSO, which verifies the accuracy of the stability analysis and the feasibility of the proposed method. This paper presents a voltage control system for multiphase squirrel-cage induction generators operating at a high variability of speed and variable load. Field-oriented vector control was used with a change in the sequence of the stator phase currents what changes the number of poles of the magnetic field produced by nine-phase stator winding. At low speeds, the current sequence is changed so that the number of poles increases allowing for the desired voltage to be obtained with greater efficiency. The task of the automatic control system was to control the DC voltage to a desired value at the output of the multiphase PWM converter. This is an alternative control method to the scalar control of voltage and frequency presented in a previous work. The control method and parameters of the automatic control system result from the mathematical model of the multiphase induction machine. In voltage‐controlled voltage source inverters (VSIs)‐based microgrids (MGs), the inner control is of prime interest task for guaranteeing safe and stable operation. In this paper, an in‐depth investigation of the modelling, control design, and analysis of the voltage and current inner control loops intended for single‐phase voltage‐controlled VSIs is established. The main objective of this work is to provide a comprehensive study of the mathematical modelling, control design, and performance evaluation of the inner control's loops considering different proportional‐integral (PI) controller types with and without compensation, and to determine the optimal scheme that can offer better performance in terms of implementation simplicity, robustness, and transient and steady‐state responses. Thus, the mathematical closed‐loop models of designed outer voltage and inner current control schemes based on PI, P, and feedforward controllers with and without compensation are, first, derived. Following this, a systematic and effective control design for tuning the different PI controllers' parameters is proposed. Furthermore, an analysis revealing the performance of the designed voltage and current control schemes is provided. This analysis enables us to choose a P controller and PI feedforward controller for the current control loop and the voltage control loop, respectively. The chosen P and PI controllers should be simple; meanwhile, they should offer a wide bandwidth. A simulation study is carried out in MATLAB/Simulink software to assess the performance of the adopted inner control scheme for both linear and non‐linear loads. In addition, an experimental setup, based on a TMS320F2837xD μC, of a single‐phase VSI supplying linear and non‐linear loads is built to verify the effectiveness and the robustness of the adopted inner controller. The results demonstrated: (1) the necessity of introducing the compensation term, which is responsible for offering control improvement against voltage perturbation, (2) the high tracking performance of the chosen controller in terms of dynamic and steady‐state responses as well as its simplicity of implementation. The stability and dynamic performance of the system are impacted by the uncertainties present in the converter model and controller parameters. The approach involves developing a control law that achieves quadratic stabilization of the closed-loop system while also satisfying the H∞ norm constraint for disturbance attenuation. The introduction of distributed generation (DG) into distribution systems is expanding due to carbon neutral policies. DG with intermittent output characteristics brings frequent voltage variations in distribution systems. This paper deals with the stability analysis and enhancement in the AC‐microgrid system comprising parallel‐operated voltage‐source inverters (VSIs) supplying an active‐load. The active‐load behaves such as a constant power load from the AC‐side. In the paper, two models for the active‐load modeling in the AC microgrid are considered: (i) simple model in which the active‐load is modeled as an ideal current source, (ii) detailed model in which all dynamics of the active‐load converter and related controllers are taken into account. The main findings and contribution of this paper are as follows. (a) All linearized state equations of the study system are extracted and transferred into a unified common dq‐reference frame, and then, small‐signal stability of the study system is carried out in the common reference frame by using the simple and detailed models of the active‐load. (b) It is shown that the simple model of the active‐load, as a current source, leads to more pessimistic results in comparison to the active‐load detailed model. (c) Impacts of the active‐load power and bandwidth of the active‐load voltage control loop on the system stability are examined. This paper presents a study of a new topology of a DC–DC converter titled double quadratic boost non-isolated. This converter has high static gain and proposes to reduce the voltage stress on the switches, where the maximum voltage value at each switch is equal to half of the total output voltage. The paper first presents the theoretical analysis of the converter operating in open loop. The objective of the work is the mathematical modeling and control strategy of the converter, as well as validation through closed loop experimental results. In addition, we present the results of practical tests to demonstrate the operation of the converter, such as the experimental static gain curve, the practical efficiency of the converter, and the output voltage control, as well as the capacitor voltage swing control. The voltage in distribution systems is controlled by the under-load tap changer of the substation and the pole transformer of the primary feeders. Recently, as one of the main countermeasures, a step voltage regulator is being introduced to solve voltage problems such as overvoltage phenomena in a distribution feeder interconnected with a renewable energy source and under voltage in a long-distance feeder. However, the tap of the step voltage regulator may be frequently operated due to its interdependent relationship with the under-load tap changer in the distribution system. Furthermore, given the existing operating characteristics of the step voltage regulator, it is difficult to perfectly maintain the customer voltage within an allowable limit using existing methods such as the line drop compensation method for a step voltage regulator. In addition, the existing line drop compensation method, considering the distributed generators, may be not able to control the proper voltage within an allowable limit. Therefore, in order to solve such voltage problems, this paper proposes a voltage control method for a step voltage regulator by considering the output voltage of an under-load tap changer that is operated via the line drop compensation method. In other words, to overcome the limitations of existing voltage control methods for step voltage regulators, this paper proposes an optimal control method to determine the optimal compensation rate for a step voltage regulator by considering the reverse power flow from a renewable energy source and the output voltage of the under-load tap changer of the main transformer. The work reported in this paper aims at developing an algorithm for system operators to solve a robust security-constrained AC optimal power flow (R-SC-ACOPF) problem, which also optimizes the settings of discrete controllers including load tap changers (LTCs) and shunt capacitor banks (SCBs). An iterative algorithm involving a master problem and a number of sub-problems is proposed. The master problem selects the optimal discrete controllers’ settings by taking into account primal SC-ACOPF constraints based on the single-component worst contingencies identified by the sub-problems. Each sub-problem is a bi-level max-min problem used to find the current worst contingency. The overall objective is to minimize the total cost, including generation and load shedding cost, while satisfying all relevant constraints. The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is a good solution for stabilizing the power system with high penetration of renewable energy. However, in case of serious unbalanced voltage disturbance/fault, the conventional VSG may lose voltage, inertia, and damping support characteristics to the grid and even can cause disconnection of renewable energy. This paper proposes an improved fault control strategy for VSG with the coordination of STATCOM. The proposed method can provide sufficient voltage support while keeping continuous system inertia and damping support under severe unbalanced fault. In the paper, an improved VSG and STATCOM control topology based on positive and negative sequence current control are first proposed so as to keep the damping and inertia support to grid during the grid fault. Secondly, the voltage support control method for the VSG with improved topology during unbalanced fault is introduced, which can achieve multiple control objectives, in terms of voltage support, current limitation, and active power output simultaneously. Then a coordination control scheme of improved VSG and STATCOM is developed so as to optimize the maximum control objectives in all possible scenarios, especially in the case of severe unbalanced fault. Two extreme cases of static stability are voltage stability and power angle stability. The general stability analysis only focuses on one of the voltage stability or power angle stability. The stability limit and state change are studied for a certain kind of stability characteristics. In this paper, the stability limits of static voltage and power angle are derived, respectively. Therefore, different stability characteristics and their interrelationships can be further studied. The index to judge the dominant stability characteristic is defined. The proposed index only needs the system wide‐area measurement information to quickly and accurately judge the dominant static stability characteristics. The dominant instability (DI) characteristic index proposed in this paper is equal to 1 or −1, which can help to quickly identify whether the power angle stability or voltage stability is dominant. This paper presents a novel modular voltage control algorithm for optimal scheduling of a distribution system's load tap changers to minimize the number of tap changes while maintaining a voltage deviation (VD) around a desired target. To this end, a bi-objective optimal voltage regulation (OVR) problem is addressed in two distinct stages. First, the operational constraint on the load tap changer is removed to form a single-objective OVR problem relating to the voltage. The solution obtained in this stage is ultimately utilized to determine the penalty value assigned to the distance from the optimal (solely in terms of voltage) control value. In the second stage, the optimal scheduling problem is formulated as a minimum-cost-path problem, which can be efficiently solved via dynamic programming. This approach allows the identification of optimal scheduling that considers both the voltage-related objective as well as the number of load tap changer switching operations with no added computational burden beyond that of a simple voltage optimization problem. The method imposes no restriction on the load tap changer's operation and is tested under two different target functions on the standard IEEE-123 test case. The first attains a nominal voltage with a 0.056 p.u. voltage deviation and the second is the well-known conservation voltage reduction (CVR) case with a 0.17 p.u. voltage deviation. The method is compared to an evolutionary-based algorithm and shows significant improvement in the voltage deviation by a factor of 3.5 as well as a computation time acceleration of two orders of magnitude. The droop mechanism is widely utilized in a stand‐alone microgrid (MG) to regulate power‐sharing among distributed generators (DG). However, over the years, the droop phenomena are continually modified to lessen the deviation in voltage and frequency parameters caused due to classical droop. This study suggests computing the droop coefficient for voltage–current (V–I) droop to take into account for proportional power distribution among DGs. In grid utility networks, the conservation voltage reduction (CVR) strategy is widely used to curtail the use of energy. Hence, this paper investigates the CVR's performance for stand‐alone MG by performing the adaptive vector control scheme in the two‐phase d–q reference frame. The article presents the use of the Texas Instruments LM5170EVM-BIDIR bidirectional DC/DC converter to control power distribution in a hybrid energy storage system based on a battery–ultracapacitor system. The paper describes typical topologies of connecting a battery with an ultracapacitor. The results of tests for calibration and identification of converter parameters are presented. The main innovation of the solution presented in this paper is the appropriate selection of the nominal voltage of the ultracapacitor so that the converter can be operated only in the constant current mode, in a cascade connection, excluding the low-efficiency constant voltage mode. This article demonstrated that such control allows for high efficiency and reduction of losses in the DC/DC converter, which is necessary in the case of mobile solutions. The amount of losses was determined depending on the control voltage in the operation modes of the converter: in the Step Up mode by increasing the voltage from 12 V to 24 V, from 12 V to 36 V, and from 12 V to 48 V and in the Step Down mode by decreasing the voltage from 48 V to 12 V, from 36 V to 12 V, and from 24 V to 12 V. For a calibrated converter in a semi-active topology, bench tests were carried out in a cycle with pulsating load. The tests were carried out using LiFePO4 cells with a voltage of 12 V and Maxwell ultracapacitors with a package voltage of 48 V. Power distribution in the range of 10% to 90% was achieved using the myRIO platform, which controlled the operation of the DC/DC converter based on an external current profile. Floating-gate transistor lies at the heart of many aspects of semiconductor applications such as neural networks, analog mixed-signal, neuromorphic computing, and especially in nonvolatile memories. The purpose of this paper was to design a high-performance nanocrystal floating-gate transistor in terms of a large memory window, low power, and extraordinary erasing speeds. Besides, the transistor achieves a thin thickness of the tunnel gate oxide layer. In order to obtain the high-performance design, this work proposed a set of structure parameters for the device such as the tunnel oxide layer thickness, Interpoly Dielectric (IPD), dot dimension, and dot spacing. Besides, this work was successful in the virtual fabrication process and methodology to fabricate and characterize the 65 nm nanocrystal floating-gate transistor. Regarding the results, while the fabrication process solves the limitation of the tunnel oxide layer thickness with the small value of 6 nm, the performance of the transistor has been significantly improved, such as 2.8 V of the memory window with the supply voltage of ±6 V at the control gate. In addition, the operation speeds are compatible, especially the rapid erasing speeds of 2.03 μs, 28.6 ns, and 1.6 ns when the low control gate voltages are ±9 V, ±12 V, and ±15 V, respectively. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of steady-state operation, control-oriented modeling for voltage control, and the experimental results of a DC–DC bidirectional converter based on a Cuk converter using a voltage-doubler concept. Due to the voltage-doubler concept, the voltage stress across semiconductors is reduced when compared with the conventional Cuk converter; this allows for the use of semiconductors with reduced drain–source on-resistance. Moreover, due to the input and output current source characteristics, the converter presents advantages, such as draining/injecting currents on both sides with low-ripple currents. Furthermore, the theoretical analysis is verified by experimental results obtained from a proof-of-concept prototype designed with a 250 V input voltage, a 360 V output voltage, 2 kW rated power, and 100 kHz switching frequency. The introduction of a large number of photovoltaic systems to distribution systems has increased the complexity of the voltage profile. It is thus necessary to manage voltage at a higher system level. For this purpose, the voltage profile of the distribution system can be calculated using state estimation and the voltage can be controlled based on the estimated values. Many methods for estimating voltage profiles using state estimation have been developed. However, the estimation accuracy of voltage profiles required for proper voltage control has not been discussed. If the assumed required estimation accuracy is too high, then more meters than necessary will be installed, unnecessarily increasing costs. Conversely, if the assumed required estimation accuracy is too low, voltage control equipment will not operate properly, and voltage violations may occur. Thus, it is important to determine the required estimation accuracy of voltage profiles for proper voltage control. In this paper, the estimation error of the voltage profile is expressed using a probability density function, and the estimation accuracy of voltage profiles required for proper voltage control is examined. A numerical case study was performed on a distribution network model with 2160 consumers, and revealed the following. To prevent voltage violations, an estimation accuracy of voltage profile that is approximately 10 times lower than that of the estimation accuracy based on current measurement equipment data is sufficient. In this paper, an impulsive control algorithm with time-delay is proposed to alleviate the issue of interrelated state variables and the adverse effect of input voltage or load perturbations on output in the highly nonlinearity of the DC converter. The impulsive control is introduced concerning the state information of the control system, while the stability criterion is established by employing the average dwell time. The control principle similarity of the delayed impulsive effect and the spiking neural network are elucidated. Unlike the already existing control methods, such as proportional–integral (PI) control and sliding mode (SM) control, we leverage the state information of the switching state drive system in recent history at every sampling moment to conduct impulsive control with accurate and swift error feedback. Three typical controls are executed on the output load and source voltage operating point, characterizing the advantages superior to the PI and SM control algorithms. Hence, the proposed algorithm outperforms others in system performance indicators such as output voltage step-up, step-down, settling time and ripple. In terms of the variation of source voltage and irradiance in the photovoltaic system, the verification of voltage control stability is given in the case of the maximum power point module of the photovoltaic system, exhibiting minor output voltage ripple and shorter transient change time. The extensive deployment of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) in AC/DC systems can lead to complex resonance issues. Impedance modeling forms the foundation for analyzing the stability of interconnected system. Existing investigations primarily address resonance concerns on the AC side of MMC. In the process of impedance modeling, the DC system is generally approximated as an ideal voltage source, thereby neglecting its dynamic impact on the impedance characteristic of MMC. Such simplification may result in inaccuracies within stability analysis findings. Based on the multi-harmonic linearization method, this paper introduces an impedance modeling approach that takes into account the characteristics of the DC port. Taking DC voltage control as a case study, the impedance model for the AC side of the MMC is established. The results of programming calculation and simulation measurement of sequence impedance are mutually verified. Finally, the MMC impedance responses determined by different DC port characteristics are analyzed. Significant alterations in MMC impedance characteristics are introduced by DC side resistance and capacitance, which may result in negative damping effects and a decrease in system stability margins. The DC side inductance has a relatively minor impact on MMC impedance responses. This paper presents an innovative cross-coupled differential drive rectifier for dual-band Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. A self-compensating rectifier with enhanced power-conversion efficiency (PCE) at low and high RF power is proposed. The proposed rectifier utilizes a self-compensating circuit, the extra two cross-couple transistors, to increase the gate voltage of transistors to control the conduction of the rectifying transistors. In order to adapt high frequency (HF) and ultrahigh frequency (UHF) rectification, the matching circuit is designed with parasitic cancellation technology. Moreover, the cascading power management circuits are added to generate a stable output voltage. The multi-standard rectifier is designed and simulated in 0. 1 8 μ m CMOS process. The simulated result shows that the proposed three-stage rectifier achieves a PCE 74% (at 5 0 0 k Ω load) when receiving a 915 MHz signal with average power of − 2 5 dBm. This paper presents a low-ripple and high-efficiency buck–boost DC–DC converter with delta-sigma modulator controller that converts 1.8 V to 1.2 V and 3.3 V. A current and voltage closed-loop controller has been designed to achieve better performance simultaneously such as lower settling-time, steady-state error and over shoot and under shoot. The converter is started in the current controller mode initially, when the output voltage approaches the desired value, the power stage is controlled with the voltage controller mode. PI compensator and a third-order delta-sigma modulator are utilized in the voltage mode. Also, the closed-loop stability of the designed converter has been analyzed with Lyapunov method using converter nonlinear model. This work has been simulated in MATLAB-SIMULINK environment. The performance results show that the maximum efficiency of the closed-loop DC–DC converter is 90% at 5 MHz switching frequency, and the output voltage ripple is 0.5% and 0.6% for the buck and boost modes, respectively. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has shown promise for voltage control in power systems due to its speed and model‐free nature. However, learning optimal control policies through trial and error on a real grid is infeasible due to the mission‐critical nature of power systems. Instead, DRL agents are typically trained on a simulator, which may not accurately represent the real grid. This discrepancy can lead to suboptimal control policies and raises concerns for power system operators. In this paper, we revisit the problem of RL‐based voltage control and investigate how model inaccuracies affect the performance of the DRL agent. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to quantify the impact of model inaccuracies on learning outcomes. Specifically, techniques that enable the DRL agent are focused on learning robust policies that can still perform well in the presence of model errors. Furthermore, the impact of the agent's decisions on the overall system loss are analyzed to provide additional insight into the control problem. The direct current (DC)‐link voltage control of the flywheel energy storage system plays an important role in realizing high‐quality grid connection. With the traditional proportional‐integral control, the DC‐link voltage cannot track its reference value quickly and smoothly when the flywheel energy storage system switches from the charging stage to other working stages. Therefore, a DC‐link voltage control strategy for the flywheel energy storage system based on active disturbance rejection control is proposed in this paper to deal with this issue. The DC‐link voltage and its differential value are considered as the state variables in this strategy. The internal and external disturbances, such as load power, switching loss, and parameter uncertainty, are regarded as an expanded state. By inputting the voltage error and the observed disturbance into the nonlinear state feedback control law, the rapidity and anti‐interference of the DC‐link voltage control are ensured under different States of Charge of the flywheel energy storage system. Then, the coefficient freezing method is used to analyze the effects of the disturbance observation bandwidth by nonlinear gain and pole position changes. The DC‐link voltage can track the reference value over a wider frequency range of disturbances. By configuring the appropriate observer structure parameters, the disturbance observation bandwidth under the nonlinear function gain variation is always higher than the expected bandwidth. In this paper, a new modified model predictive control is proposed to improve the performance of the model predictive control for two-level voltage source inverters by alleviating computational burden and the disadvantages associated with the conventional model predictive control strategy. The objective of the proposed method is to reduce the number of candidate voltage vectors in each sector, thereby improving the overall performance of the control system, as well as achieving common-mode voltage reduction for two-level voltage source inverters. Two strategies are introduced to achieve this objective. Firstly, an algorithm is developed based on statistical computational processes to pre-define the candidate voltage vectors. This strategy involves ranking and considering the most frequently used voltage vectors. Consequently, by reducing the computational burden, the search space for the optimal voltage vectors is reduced. Furthermore, based on statistical results, a strategy is proposed to divide the sectors into three sectors instead of the six sectors in the conventional method. This approach effectively reduces the number of candidate voltage vectors. The modified model predictive control strategy aims to improve the efficiency of the control system by reducing the computational burden, and suppressing the common-mode voltage. The simulation and experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy under various operational conditions. The results demonstrate that the modified model predictive control approach significantly reduces the computational burden and complexity of the control system while effectively suppressing the common-mode voltage; this contributes to improving the performance of two-level voltage source inverters and enhancing their applicability for connecting the renewable energies to the grid. This paper proposes and develops the idea of using a community supercapacitor (SC) in an islanded DC multiple nano‐grids (MNG) system. In the proposed structure, the community SC works in tandem with the community/cloud battery energy storage system (CBESS) of the DC MNG. This combination forms a grid‐forming battery‐supercapacitor cloud hybrid energy storage system (CHESS), which is responsible for maintaining the voltage stability and power balance at the common DC bus of the MNG system. Also, to effectively utilize the SC capacity, this paper proposes a modified control structure for each DC nano‐grid enabling the local BESS units to coordinate with the community SC. Then, it is shown that, in the proposed grid‐forming CHESS technology, the output power of all the local and community BESS units has significantly smoother power variations leading to a higher battery lifetime. Additionally, it is shown that the proposed CHESS technology can improve the voltage stability of the system leading to higher voltage quality. Moreover, it is discussed analytically that the proposed CHESS technology requires less energy storage capacity for the community SC compared to its equivalent MNG with a distributed SC architecture. This paper proposed a dead-time compensation method with fractional-order proportional integral (FOPI) error voltage control. The disturbance voltages caused by the power devices' dead time and non-ideal switching characteristics are compensated for with the FOPI controller and fed to the reference voltage. In this paper, the actual error voltage is calculated based on the model and actual voltage of the permanent magnet synchronous motor. Considering the parameter error of the permanent magnet synchronous motor and the voltage error caused by the dead-time effect, a FOPI controller is used to calculate the compensation voltage. An improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is utilized to design the parameters of the FOPI controller in order to eliminate the dead-time effect, and the optimal fitness function is designed. Compared with other optimization algorithms, the improved PSO algorithm can achieve faster convergence speed in the error voltage controller parameter design. The proposed dead-time compensation method can improve the performance of the current response and eliminate the dead-time effect. This method also eliminates all harmonic disturbances and has a good suppression effect on high-frequency harmonics. The simulation and experimental results show that the dead-time compensation method using optimal FOPI error voltage control makes the current ripple smaller and the response speed faster than that of the traditional optimal integer-order PI control, thus demonstrating the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method. Increasing connection rates of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems to electricity distribution networks has become a major concern for the distribution network service providers (DNSPs) due to the inability of existing network infrastructure to accommodate high levels of PV penetration while maintaining voltage regulation and other operational requirements. The solution to this dilemma is to undertake a hosting capacity (HC) study to identify the maximum penetration limit of rooftop PV generation and take necessary actions to enhance the HC of the network. This paper presents a comprehensive review of two topics: HC assessment strategies and reinforcement learning (RL)-based coordinated voltage control schemes. In this paper, the RL-based coordinated voltage control schemes are identified as a means to enhance the HC of electricity distribution networks. RL-based algorithms have been widely used in many power system applications in recent years due to their precise, efficient and model-free decision-making capabilities. A large portion of this paper is dedicated to reviewing RL concepts and recently published literature on RL-based coordinated voltage control schemes. A non-exhaustive classification of RL algorithms for voltage control is presented and key RL parameters for the voltage control problem are identified. Stochastic power generation is the new reality in power system management. Voltage Control mechanisms based on physical assets of the power system are deemed inadequate and are not guaranteed to lead the energy transformation in a way that ensures system security as well as cost-effective operation. Many countries that recently attained deregulated Balancing Market environments are in need of regulatory provisions and rigorous extension of electricity market mechanisms. On 1 November 2020, the Greek Electricity Market commenced operations conforming to the European Target Model. Apart from the innate difficulties a transformation such as this contains, more challenges occur as Greece is bound by European law to design market-based incentive mechanisms to remunerate Ancillary Services provided to the power system. This paper aims to examine some of the technical and regulatory aspects linked with—future—Transmission System Operator (TSO) and Distribution System Operator (DSO) cooperation in overcoming local transmission system problems concerning Voltage regulation. The interaction between localized Voltage Control Market (VCM) and the Balancing Market, the incorporation and competition of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and Transmission Energy Resources (TER) within the VCM along with the TSO - DSO procedures and products standardization are the focus points of the present research paper. In this paper, the application and design of a high-power factor isolated Ćuk converter-based LED driver are realized for up to 50 W power. For the power switch of the PFC isolated Ćuk converter, traditional Si and silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, which are wide bandgap semiconductors, are used and compared. The application is conducted using a dsPIC30F4011 microcontroller including PI voltage control. A current sensor is added to limit maximum current. Moreover, PI control parameters are selected by genetic algorithm to avoid a complex mathematical procedure for controller design. The power LED model derived in this paper is used for the PI parameter selection process. In addition, the input side inductor of the converter is operated in discontinuous conduction mode, and the switching frequency of the power switch is 57 kHz. With the experimental setup, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of grid voltage and current, power LED voltage and current, switch voltage, and input side inductor current are shown for both the SiC and Si MOSFETs and compared. It is concluded from the application that the SiC-based driver gives better results than the Si-based driver on the basis of THD and efficiency.
