This paper presents a finite control set model predictive strategy and its application to the load voltage control of two-level four-leg inverters. The proposed approach uses the novel discrete-time model of the inverter and output $LC$ filter in order to predict the variables to be controlled. These predictions are carried out for the 16 switching states of the inverter and are evaluated using a cost function. The switching state that forces the load voltages to be closest to their respective references is chosen and applied to the inverter. The behavior of the predictive controller has been investigated, and the changes to both inductive and capacitive filter parameters have been considered. In order to improve the reliability of the fourth leg as well as the overall inverter efficiency, a solution is proposed, which combines hardware and software reconfigurations. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experimental results considering single-/three-phase, balanced/unbalanced, and linear/nonlinear loads. In this paper, a new medium voltage power converter topology using a diode rectifier, three-level boost (TLB) converter, and neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed for a high-power permanent magnet synchronous generator-based wind energy conversion system. The generator-side TLB converter performs the maximum power point tracking and balancing of dc-link capacitor voltages, while the grid-side NPC inverter regulates the net dc-bus voltage and reactive power to the grid. A significant improvement in the grid power quality is accomplished as the NPC inverter no longer controls the dc-link neutral point voltage. A model predictive strategy is proposed to control the complete system where the discrete-time models of the proposed power electronic converters are used to predict the future behavior of control variables. These predictions are evaluated using two independent cost functions, and the switching states which minimize these cost functions are selected and applied to the generator- and grid-side converters directly. In order to comply with the high-power application, the switching frequencies of the TLB converter and NPC inverter are minimized and maintained below 1.5 and 1 kHz, respectively. In this paper, two new topologies are proposed for multilevel inverters. The proposed topologies consist of a combination of the conventional series and the switched capacitor inverter units. The proposed topologies reduce the number of switches and isolated dc voltage sources, the variety of the dc voltage source values, and the size and cost of the system in comparison with the conventional topologies. In addition, the proposed topologies can double the input voltage without a transformer. There is no need for complicated methods to balance the capacitor voltage. This paper presents a multilevel inverter that has been conceptualized to reduce component count, particularly for a large number of output levels. It comprises floating input dc sources alternately connected in opposite polarities with one another through power switches. Each input dc level appears in the stepped load voltage either individually or in additive combinations with other input levels. This approach results in reduced number of power switches as compared to classical topologies. The working principle of the proposed topology is demonstrated with the help of a single-phase five-level inverter. The topology is investigated through simulations and validated experimentally on a laboratory prototype. In this paper, a model predictive scheme is proposed to control the grid-connected high-power four-level diode-clamped inverter. To predict the future behavior of active and reactive grid power values and dc link capacitor voltages, a discrete-time model of the inverter is developed in synchronous reference frame. The controller uses all the possible switching states of the inverter for the prediction and evaluates them using a cost function. The switching state, which minimizes the cost function, is then chosen and applied at the next sampling interval. The switching frequency minimization is also achieved by including an extra constraint in the cost function. A simplified extrapolation method with reduced computational burden is proposed to safeguard the semiconductor devices during the dynamic changes in reference power values. The performance of the proposed method is investigated with the perturbations in the grid filter and dc link parameters. The distributed generation (DG) should supply continuous power to the local critical load, even in the condition of utility outage. And many efforts have been made for the three-phase inverter in the DG to transfer between the islanding mode and the grid-tied mode seamlessly. This paper proposes a transfer strategy based on indirect current control for the three-phase inverter in the DG, which is composed mainly of two cascaded feedback loops, i.e., capacitor voltage loop and external grid current loop, in synchronous reference frame. In the grid-tied mode, the grid current is controlled by regulating the capacitor voltage. When islanding happens, the reference of the voltage loop is fixed by the limiter. As the local load is located in parallel with the filter capacitor in the proposed strategy, the load voltage is always controlled by the capacitor voltage loop directly, and the quality of the load voltage can be guaranteed. Besides, the performance of the capacitor voltage loop is further improved by introducing an inner capacitor current loop. Moreover, the steady state and transient state of the system, including the output of the limiter, are comprehensively analyzed, and then the compensators and limiters are designed. A European efficiency enhancement strategy for the grid-tied inverters with common dc bus and ac bus in parallel operation is proposed in this paper. Based on the inherent relationship between the dc bus voltage and the grid-feeding power, two dc bus voltage regulators with different output limits are employed in each grid-tied inverter. The operation of the dc bus voltage regulators depends on the grid-feeding power level. Therefore, the grid-tied inverter has priority up to the maximum efficiency operation point, and then, to operate at full load mode with the increase of the grid-feeding power. As a result, the European efficiency of the grid-tied system is improved without any communication link and extra hardware cost. The operation principle of the grid-tied inverter system is analyzed in detail with the implementation of the proposed control, and the design guidelines for key parameters are given and discussed. A prototype with three grid-tied inverters in parallel operation is built and experimental tests have been conducted on it in terms of steady-state performances and dynamic performances. The experimental results show that the operation modes of each grid-tied inverter depend on its sensing gain of the dc bus voltage. The European efficiency of the grid-tied inverter system with the conventional control and with the proposed control are 94.74% and 95.17%, respectively, which means the European efficiency has been enhanced by 0.43%. In this paper, a model-predictive control of medium voltage, grid-tied four-level diode-clamped inverter for use in high-power wind energy conversion systems is presented. The control objectives such as regulation of net dc-link voltage, reactive power generation to meet the grid operator request, dc-link capacitor voltages balancing, and switching frequency minimization are included in the cost function. The latter objective is an important requirement for high-power converters, and this has been achieved without any modifications to the software or hardware configuration. The future behavior of the grid currents and dc-link voltages is predicted for all the possible switching states using the discrete-time model of the inverter, dc-link, inductive filter, and grid. The switching state that minimizes the cost function has been chosen and applied to the inverter directly. During different operating conditions, the switching frequency is regulated between 750 and 850 Hz with the help of a lookup-table-based weighting factor, and thus, the proposed methodology appears as a promising tool to control the high-power grid-tied inverters. The results obtained through the MATLAB simulations on 4 MVA/4000 V system and dSPACE DS1103-based experiments on 5 kW/208 V prototype are in a close relationship and thus validate the proposed control strategy. This paper proposes the pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy of Z-source inverters (ZSIs) with minimum inductor current ripple. In existing PWM strategy with single-phase shoot-through, the shoot-through time interval is divided into six equal parts, therefore the three phase legs bear the equal shoot-through time interval. In this manner, the allotment and arrangement of the shoot-through state is easy to realize, but the inductor current ripple is not optimized. This causes to use relatively large inductors. In the proposed PWM strategy, the shoot-through time intervals of three phase legs are calculated and rearranged according to the active state and zero state time intervals to achieve the minimum current ripple across the Z-source inductor, while maintaining the same total shoot-through time interval. The principle of the proposed PWM strategy is analyzed in detail, and the comparison of current ripple under the traditional and proposed PWM strategy is given. This paper presents a detailed operation analysis, controller design, and realization of a high-power, bidirectional quasi-Z-source inverter (BQ-ZSI) for electric vehicle applications. The circuit analysis shows that with a bidirectional switch in the quasi-Z-source network, the performance of the inverter under small inductance and low power factor can be improved. Based on the circuit analysis, a small signal model of the BQ-ZSI is derived, which indicates that the circuit is prone to oscillate when there is disturbance on the dc input voltage. Therefore, a dedicated voltage controller with feed-forward compensation is designed to reject the disturbance and stabilize the dc-link voltage during a non-shoot-through state. Hybrid cascade multilevel inverters combine semiconductor devices of different voltage ratings and technologies, which theoretically allow high efficiency to be achieved. The bottlenecks of these topologies are, however, the need for isolated supplies for the cells and the lack of modularity. This paper focuses on the design and control of high-resolution, high-efficiency multilevel inverters with simplified dc power supplies. It introduces several rules for systematically designing the dc voltages of the cells, for which all unsupplied capacitor voltages can be regulated. Six classes of inverters are obtained covering single- and three-phase, staircase and pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) inverters. New configurations of hybrid cascade multilevel inverters are obtained for each class. A double modulation strategy with two different frequencies is proposed that allows switching losses of PWM inverters to be reduced. Decoupled mechanisms are proposed for the total and internal energy balances. It is shown how to make the design robust by taking into account conversion losses and large dc-voltage imbalances in the design and control. An analysis of the maximum voltage utilization and efficiency of the resulting configurations is carried out. It is important to improve the overall efficiency of a photovoltaic (PV) inverter when it is connected to the grid. Fundamentally, the conversion efficiency from dc to ac power of an inverter is important. However, in the presence of partial shading, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) on PV modules is more important than the conversion efficiency. In this paper, a new control method for a three-level inverter is proposed. With the proposed method, each dc-link voltage of the three-level inverter can be asymmetrically regulated. When PV modules are split into two and each split module is connected to the respective dc-link capacitors of the inverter, the asymmetric control can be helpful because separate MPPTs are possible. The effectiveness of the proposed method was examined through experiments with a T-type three-level inverter, where each dc-link capacitor was supplied by a PV simulator emulating two separate PV modules under different shading conditions. In this paper, a single-phase multilevel inverter with battery balancing is proposed. The input of each individual inverter is directly connected to a battery. The combination of batteries can be controlled according to the batteries' voltages to implement the battery-balancing function. The operational principle of the proposed system is first described, and then, the design equation is derived. Experiments show that the battery-balancing discharge function is achieved. A neutral-point-clamped three-level inverter with small dc-link capacitors is presented in this paper. The inverter requires zero average neutral-point current for stable neutral-point voltage. The small dc-link capacitors may not maintain capacitor voltage balance, even with zero neutral-point current. This may happen due to nonlinearities present in the circuit. This requires a fast control of the neutral-point voltage. A simple carrier-based modulation strategy which allows modeling of the neutral-point voltage dynamics as a continuous function of power drawn from the inverter is proposed. This continuous model shows that the neutral-point current is proportional to the power drawn from the inverter, and it enables the use of a well-established classical control theory for the neutral-point voltage controller design. A simple proportional integral controller is designed for the neutral-point voltage control on the basis of the continuous model. The design method for optimum performance is discussed. The implementation of the proposed modulation strategy and the controller is very simple. The controller is implemented in a 7.5-kW induction machine-based drive with only 14 \mu \F dc-link capacitors. Also, the experimental results show that fast and stable performance of the neutral-point voltage controller are achieved and thus verify the validity of the proposed control approach. This paper proposes a new family of three-switch three-state single-phase Z-source inverters (TSTS-ZSIs) that can be classified into two groups, boost-based TSTS-ZSI and buck-boost-based TSTS-ZSI, according to the step-up circuit. All of the topologies have the merits of buck-boost capability and low voltage stress, and some of them have the feature of dual grounding. In addition, the step-up in dc side and inversion in ac side is completely decoupled in the proposed topologies. In terms of a linear voltage gain, the conventional linear control methods can be used, which makes the control system very simple. The operating principles of the two types of topologies are described, respectively, and the comprehensive comparison between them is provided. Parallel operation is an effective way to improve the capacity of full power converter in permanent-magnet direct-drive wind power generation system. But it causes the zero-sequence circulating-current (ZSCC), which brings current discrepancy, current waveform distortion, power losses, and electromagnetic interference (EMI), etc. The paper proposes a new topology of full power converters which are composed of n full power converters. The n converters have the same structures and are in parallel with each other. Besides, the average models of the system are analyzed and the fundamental mechanism of ZSCC generation is given. Based on the above analysis, the control strategy of the system is designed. This paper proposed a novel predictive variable-structure-switching-based current controller for a three-phase load driven by a power inverter. The design specifications are robustness to load electrical parameters, fast dynamic response, reduced switching frequency, and simple hardware implementation. In order to meet previous specifications, a sliding mode controller has been developed, which is designed as finite-state automata, and implemented with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device. The switching strategy implemented within the state transition diagram provides for a minimum number of switches by the three-phase inverter that is confirmed through simulation and experimental results. Its regulation using the proposed control law provides good transient response by the brushless ac motor control. However, this does not limit the wider applicability of the proposed controller that is suitable for different types of ac loads (rectifier and inverter) and ac motors (induction, synchronous, and reluctance). This paper proposes a smooth transition control strategy for voltage-source inverters between standalone (SA) and grid-connected (GC) modes of operation. In the GC mode, the amount of power exchanged with the utility grid is controlled by regulating the phase currents. In the SA mode, the load voltage is regulated by the inverter with its phase dictated by the inverter control. The transition between SA and GC operations that will ensure continuous power delivery to the load requires continuation in the phase of the system voltage. The proportional–integral, trapezoidal, sinusoidal, and staircase frequency variation techniques have been analyzed to find the best approach for minimizing the total harmonic distortion (THD). A smooth frequency variation technique has been developed, which provides lower THD on the voltage waveforms compared with the other techniques. The new algorithm has been implemented on a 5-kW single-phase utility interactive inverter having the SA operation capability. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed technique provides seamless transition between the inverter modes of operation with minimal distortion at the inverter output voltage. Conventional hysteresis current controllers have the disadvantage of a variable switching frequency. This paper presents a novel hysteresis current control method which uses the adjacent current error zero-crossing time to calculate the upper/lower hysteresis bandwidth after the measured half current error period. This strategy makes the algorithm independent of load parameters and thus it can achieve a stable switching frequency. An improved switching scheme has been successfully applied to a single-phase three-level H-bridge voltage source inverter driving a vibration test bench based on the novel hysteresis current. It can select appropriate switching states to overcome dead-time effects without dead-time compensation according to the relation of the current switching state, the current error, and the upper/lower hysteresis bandwidth. Field-programmable gate array has enough computational power to allow multiple sampling within a current error period and logic control power to implement state machine transitions. This paper proposes a current-error space-vector-based hysteresis controller with online computation of boundary for two-level inverter-fed induction motor (IM) drives. The proposed hysteresis controller has got all advantages of conventional current-error space-vector-based hysteresis controllers like quick transient response, simplicity, adjacent voltage vector switching, etc. Major advantage of the proposed controller-based voltage-source-inverters-fed drive is that phase voltage frequency spectrum produced is exactly similar to that of a constant switching frequency space-vector pulsewidth modulated (SVPWM) inverter. In this proposed hysteresis controller, stator voltages along α- and β-axes are estimated during zero and active voltage vector periods using current errors along α- and β-axes and steady-state model of IM. Online computation of hysteresis boundary is carried out using estimated stator voltages in the proposed hysteresis controller. The proposed scheme is simple and capable of taking inverter upto six-step-mode operation, if demanded by drive system. The proposed hysteresis-controller-based inverter-fed drive scheme is experimentally verified. The steady state and transient performance of the proposed scheme is extensively tested. This paper proposes an indirect current control algorithm for seamless transfer of three-phase utility-interactive voltage source inverters. With the proposed method the inverter is able to provide critical loads with a stable and seamless voltage during the whole transition period including both clearing time and control mode change. This paper extends the Z-source concept to matrix converters and explores a family of Z-source matrix converters. Their principles and characteristics are analyzed, and a simplified voltage-fed Z-source matrix converter is used as an example to demonstrate its operation, voltage gain versus modulation index, PWM method, boost control, and implementation of the control. Both simulation and experimental results verify operation of the proposed Z-source matrix converter, analytical results, and control method. The Z-source converters can achieve buck and boost operation with reduced number of switches needed, therefore achieving low cost, high efficiency, and reliability, compared to the traditional matrix converters. Power converters consisting of naturally commutated thyristors such as cycloconverters and current source inverters were the first to be used in driving electrical motors with variable speed, but now, due to their inferior performance compared to forced commutated converters, their use is restricted in the high voltage/high power range where the performance and cost of forced commutated switching devices are not yet competitive. Hybrid cycloconverters proposed recently are capable of improving the performance of cycloconverters by adding an auxiliary forced commutated inverter with reduced installed power. It will be shown that the new topology is not only able to improve the quality of the output voltage but is also able to enhance the control over the circulating current and, therefore, for some of the cycloconverter arrangements, to improve the input power quality. In this paper, a real-time circulating current reduction method for parallel harmonic-elimination pulsewidth modulation (HEPWM) inverters is proposed. HEPWM techniques are often used in high-capacity inverters. For instance, in a hybrid microgrid, the inverters are employed to transfer power between the dc and ac buses. If the inverters are in parallel operation, the zero-sequence path can be established, and the zero-sequence circulating current will circulate among the inverters. The proposed method installs a cascade null-vector control system behind the conventional three-phase HEPWM modulator. The proposed null-vector control system can be disabled to save switching losses when the zero-sequence circulating current is small, whereas it can be enabled when the zero-sequence circulating current becomes large. The proposed method does not affect the line-to-line voltage waveforms of HEPWM inverters, and it can easily enable/disable the null-vector control system to provide bumpless transfer. Compared with the conventional HEPWM with zero-sequence harmonics elimination, the proposed method can provide an extra 15% modulation index range. This paper extends the impedance-source (Z-source) inverters concept to the transformer-based Z-source (trans-Z-source) inverters. The original Z-source inverter (ZSI) employs an impedance network of two inductors and two capacitors connected in a special arrangement to interface the dc source and the inverter bridge. It has buck and boost function that cannot be achieved by traditional voltage-source inverters and current-source inverters. In the proposed four trans-Z-source inverters, all the impedance networks consist of a transformer and one capacitor. While maintaining the main features of the previously presented Z-source network, the new networks exhibit some unique advantages, such as the increased voltage gain and reduced voltage stress in the voltage-fed trans-ZSIs and the expanded motoring operation range in the current-fed trans-ZSIs, when the turns ratio of the transformer windings is over 1. With regard to a five-level inverter comprising flying-capacitor asymmetric H-bridge, the impact on the capacitor voltage under conventional modulation approach is analyzed. Since it is sensitive to the fundamental period and the load current, it may introduce undesired low-order harmonics into the output voltage and may even break down the power switches due to the considerable fluctuation of the flying-capacitor voltage. Thus, this paper proposes a novel pulsewidth-modulation scheme with the positive and negative cross carriers, which controls the flying-capacitor voltage by utilizing the redundant switching states of the output voltages. Three modes of precharging the flying capacitor without extra equipments are presented. Moreover, the capacitance of the flying capacitor and the switching frequency of the power switches can be chosen according to the allowable fluctuation of the flying-capacitor voltage and the load current. In order to remove the overlapping of the level layers, the optimization of the line-to-line voltage waveform is proposed to synthesize the reference vector with the “nearest three-vector” approach. Current source inverters (CSI) offer advantages of voltage boost, short-circuit protection, reduced electromagnetic interference, and direct regeneration. While CSI control strategies are less developed than for voltage source inverters (VSI), the topologies are functional duals and have much in common in a control sense. In particular, since CSI voltage regulation is the dual of VSI current regulation, current regulation control strategies for a VSI can be readily implemented as equivalent voltage control strategies for a CSI. This paper shows how a high-performance proportional-integral stationary frame and P+Resonant CSI voltage regulator can be analytically designed and optimized, while in particular taking into account the second-order response of a CSI filter/load combination. This paper describes a novel switching signal generator for three-phase voltage source inverters. Unlike conventional space-vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) which achieves three-phase input voltage by a combination of the basic space vectors, the proposed scheme produces optimal switching commands to minimize the filtered measure of quantization error. Under specific selections of the filter matrix and the quantization scheme, it is shown that the proposed modulator is equivalent to SVPWM. An experimental platform is built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. It is shown that the switching number of the proposed method is reduced without sacrificing the harmonic distortion within the input frequency band under various reference signals. When small currents are interrupted by a vacuum switch, it is well known that the chopping current and the associated overvoltage are observed. Many investigations on the current-chopping phenomena in alternating-current (ac) circuits have been carried out, but there are no data available on inverter circuits in spite of their recent wide application to synchronous motor systems. In this paper, chopping-current levels and the overvoltages in an inverter circuit under a simple three-level pulsewidth-modulated control are investigated. As a result, the mean chopping-current level is three to four times higher than that in an ac circuit. In particular, high chopping currents occur only when the timing of the current interruption by the vacuum switch synchronizes with that of the inverter's switching, which we call “double chopping.” High chopping current due to double chopping might be harmful since the high overvoltage proportional to the chopping-current level could damage the insulation of electric equipment. This paper proposes a single-phase seven-level inverter for grid-connected photovoltaic systems, with a novel pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) control scheme. Three reference signals that are identical to each other with an offset that is equivalent to the amplitude of the triangular carrier signal were used to generate the PWM signals. The inverter is capable of producing seven levels of output-voltage levels (Vdc, 2Vdc/3, Vdc/3, 0, -Vdc, -2Vdc/3, -Vdc/3) from the dc supply voltage. A digital proportional–integral current-control algorithm was implemented in a TMS320F2812 DSP to keep the current injected into the grid sinusoidal. This paper presents the design and development of dynamic partially reconfigurable pulsewidth modulation (DPRPWM) controller for three-phase voltage-source inverters (VSI) in a single Xilinx Spartan 3 XCS400PQ208 field programmable gate array (FPGA). The DPRPWM controller is designed such that it switches between the popular PWM techniques like sinusoidal PWM (SPWM) and space vector PWM (SVPWM). The FPGA platform supports the run-time reconfiguration of control functions and algorithms directly in hardware and meets hard real-time performance criteria in terms of timings for PWM generation as well as reconfiguration. The DPRPWM control is simulated and experimentally verified using a low-cost Xilinx Spartan FPGA. The results of SPWM and SVPWM controller are presented and the results prove that the DPRPWM controller for three-phase inverter is highly possible and can be extended to any level/phase PWM controllers. The hysteresis modulation for power electronic converters is attractive in many different applications because of its unmatched dynamic response and wide command-tracking bandwidth. Its application and benefits for two-level converters are well understood, but the extension of this strategy to multilevel converters is still under development. This paper summarizes and reviews the various hysteresis modulation approaches available in the literature for multilevel converters. The pros and cons of various techniques are described and compared for tracking the reference signal in order to attain an adequate switching optimization, excellent dynamic responses and high accuracy in steady-state operation. By using the recently developed multilevel hysteresis modulation approaches, the advantages of using several accessible dc potentials in a multilevel inverter have been fully exploited. All of these hysteresis modulation approaches are tested for tracking a current reference when applied to a five-level inverter. The relevant simulation and experimental results are also presented. The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is one of the modern devices used in distribution systems to protect consumers against sudden changes in voltage amplitude. In this paper, emergency control in distribution systems is discussed by using the proposed multifunctional DVR control strategy. Also, the multiloop controller using the Posicast and P+Resonant controllers is proposed in order to improve the transient response and eliminate the steady-state error in DVR response, respectively. The proposed algorithm is applied to some disturbances in load voltage caused by induction motors starting, and a three-phase short circuit fault. Also, the capability of the proposed DVR has been tested to limit the downstream fault current. The current limitation will restore the point of common coupling (PCC) (the bus to which all feeders under study are connected) voltage and protect the DVR itself. The innovation here is that the DVR acts as a virtual impedance with the main aim of protecting the PCC voltage during downstream fault without any problem in real power injection into the DVR. This paper proposes a new high step-up dc–dc converter designed especially for regulating the dc interface between various microsources and a dc–ac inverter to electricity grid. The figuration of the proposed converter is a quadratic boost converter with the coupled inductor in the second boost converter. The converter achieves high step-up voltage gain with appropriate duty ratio and low voltage stress on the power switch. Additionally, the energy stored in the leakage inductor of the coupled inductor can be recycled to the output capacitor. The operating principles and steady-state analyses of continuous-conduction mode and boundary-conduction mode are discussed in detail. To verify the performance of the proposed converter, a 280-W prototype sample is implemented with an input voltage range of 20–40 V and an output voltage of up to 400 V. The upmost efficiency of 93.3% is reached with high-line input; on the other hand, the full-load efficiency remains at 89.3% during low-line input. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AC test power sources are essential for testing electric equipment that is ac-mains connected. Typically, linear power amplifiers (LPAs) are mainly employed as ac test sources because of their high fidelity and excellent dynamic behavior. However, these LPAs have very high losses in their output stages, which make the systems bulky and expensive due to the large heatsinks that are required. In recent years, two approaches have attracted popular interest to improve the efficiency of ac power sources. These are hybrid operation, i.e., combination of linear and switch mode, and multilevel switch-mode inverters. In this paper, three types of multilevel power amplifiers, based on hybrid or switching technology, are presented, namely: hybrid multicell amplifier (H-MCA), amplitude-modulated (AM) + pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) MCA (AP-MCA), and PWM MCA (P-MCA). For each of these topologies, the operating principle and control scheme are introduced. A novel H-bridge multilevel pulsewidth modulation converter topology based on a series connection of a high-voltage diode-clamped inverter and a low-voltage conventional inverter is proposed in this paper. A dc link voltage arrangement for the new hybrid and asymmetric solution is presented to have a maximum number of output voltage levels by preserving the adjacent switching vectors between voltage levels. Hence, a 15-level hybrid converter can be attained with a minimum number of power components. A comparative study has been carried out to present high performance of the proposed configuration to approach a very low total harmonic distortion of voltage and current, which leads to the possible elimination of the output filter. Regarding the proposed configuration, a new cascade inverter is verified by cascading an asymmetrical diode-clamped inverter, in which 19 levels can be synthesized in output voltage with the same number of components. To balance the dc link capacitor voltages for the maximum output voltage resolution as well as synthesize asymmetrical dc link combination, a new multi-output boost converter is utilized at the dc link voltage of a seven-level H-bridge diode-clamped inverter. The output voltage quality of some of the single-phase multilevel inverters can be improved when their dc-link voltages are regulated asymmetrically. Symmetrical and asymmetrical multilevel diode-clamped inverters have the problem of dc-link capacitor voltage balancing, especially when power factor of the load is close to unity. In this paper, a new single-inductor multi-output dc/dc converter is proposed that can control the dc-link voltages of a single-phase diode-clamped inverter asymmetrically to achieve voltage quality enhancement. The circuit of the presented converter is explained and the main equations are developed. A control strategy is proposed and explained in details. To validate the versatility of the proposed combination of the suggested dc–dc converter and the asymmetrical four-level diode-clamped inverter (ADCI), simulations and experiments have been directed. It is concluded that the proposed combination of introduced multioutput dc–dc converter and single-phase ADCI is a good candidate for power conversion in residential photovoltaic (PV) utilization.
