1. Piezoelectric actuation of an aero engine fuel metering valve

Abstract: Servo valves are used in a broad variety of flow modulation applications. In the field of aerospace, servo valves are used in aero engines to meter fuel flow. The existing valves are labour intensive to manufacture and highly optimised such that to achieve improvements in performance requires a novel design. This research investigates smart material actuators and valve concepts. Specifically, a prototype pilot stage nozzle flapper valve is developed for the purpose of actuating a main stage spool. The typical nozzle flapper type servo valve uses a torque motor to actuate the flapper. In this research project, the torque motor has been substituted for two piezoelectric ring bender actuators. A novel mounting mechanism has been developed to secure the ring benders within the valve. Analytical and finite element models have been made to understand the displacement mechanism of a ring bender and the effects of the mount on the displacement and force from a ring bender, and the results were compared with experiment. The mounting stiffness at the inner and outer edges was found to decrease the displacement of the ring bender and it was found that the stiffness of the mount at the outer edge has a greater negative effect on displacement than the stiffness of the mount at the inner edge. The displacement of a ring bender was tested across the operational temperature range of an aero engine. It was found that the displacement of the ring bender is reduced at low temperatures and increases at high temperature. The variation of stiffness of the elastomeric mount was also tested with temperature and it was found that the displacement of a ring bender is significantly reduced when the mounting elastomer approaches its glass transition temperature. A prototype valve was built to test the pressures and flows that could be achieved at two control ports by using a ring bender as actuator. A single ring bender and two ring benders, mounted in tandem to provide redundancy, have been tested. An analytical model was developed and the predictions are compared with experimental results for pressures and flow. The full stroke of the valve was 300m when mounted and reduced to 150m when mounted in tandem with an inactive ring bender. The hysteresis of the valve is +/-10%. The pressures and flow at and between the control ports of the valve are consistent with the predictions.

2. Clinical implications of imprecise sampling time for 10- and 30-min thyrotropin-releasing hormone stimulation tests in horses

Abstract: Background: The thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test is used to diagnose pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) using 10- or 30-min protocols. Imprecise sampling time for the 10-min protocol can lead to misdiagnoses. Objectives: To determine the effect of imprecise sampling time for the 30-min protocol of the TRH stimulation test. Study design: In vivo experiment. Methods: Plasma immunoreactive adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) concentrations were measured 9, 10, 11, 29, 30 and 31 min after intravenous administration of 1 mg of TRH in 15 control and 12 PPID horses. Differences in ACTH concentrations between sampling times, variability in ACTH concentrations between protocols, and diagnostic classification of PPID were assessed using Friedman's test, Bland–Altman plots, and Fisher's exact test, respectively, with 95% confidence intervals reported and significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Imprecise sampling time resulted in variable ACTH concentrations, but significant differences in absolute ACTH concentrations were not detected for imprecise sampling within each protocol or between protocols. Imprecise sampling changed PPID diagnostic classification for 3/27 (11 [4–28] %) horses for both protocols. Using the 30-min protocol as a reference, 1/12 (8 [1–35] %) horses returned a negative test result and 5/12 (42 [19–68] %) horses returned equivocal test results that would be considered positive in practice due to the presence of supportive clinical signs. Main limitations: Limited sample size and inter-horse variability reduced the ability to detect small but potentially relevant differences. Conclusions: Overall, the impact of imprecise sampling was not significantly different between the 10- and 30-min TRH stimulation test protocols. However, diagnostic classification for PPID would have varied between the 10- and 30-min protocols in this population, if clinical signs had been ignored. Abstract: Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions' effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people's initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.

Abstract: Metals are important cofactors in the metabolic processes of cyanobacteria, including photosynthesis, cellular respiration, DNA replication, and the biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites. In adaptation to the marine environment, cyanobacteria use metallophores to acquire trace metals when necessary as well as to reduce potential toxicity from excessive metal concentrations. Leptochelins A-C were identified as structurally novel metallophores from three geographically dispersed cyanobacteria of the genus Leptothoe. Determination of the complex structures of these metabolites presented numerous challenges, but they were ultimately solved using integrated data from NMR, mass spectrometry and deductions from the biosynthetic gene cluster. The leptochelins are comprised of halogenated linear NRPS-PKS hybrid products with multiple heterocycles that have potential for hexadentate and tetradentate coordination with metal ions. The genomes of the three leptochelin producers were sequenced, and retrobiosynthetic analysis revealed one candidate biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) consistent with the structure of leptochelin. The putative BGC is highly homologous in all three Leptothoe strains, and all possess genetic signatures associated with metallophores. Postcolumn infusion of metals using an LC-MS metabolomics workflow performed with leptochelins A and B revealed promiscuous binding of iron, copper, cobalt, and zinc, with greatest preference for copper. Iron depletion and copper toxicity experiments support the hypothesis that leptochelin metallophores may play key ecological roles in iron acquisition and in copper detoxification. In addition, the leptochelins possess significant cytotoxicity against several cancer cell lines.

6. Are conspiracy theory believers drawn to conspiratorial explanations, alternatives explanations, or both?

Abstract: Individuals differ in their general propensity to believe in conspiracy theories, often referred to as conspiracy mentality. Because prototypical conspiracy theories exhibit a conspiratorial content (i.e. they claim that a conspiracy occurred) and an alternative status (i.e. they are rejected by authorities), it is unclear if conspiracy mentality captures a general tendency to believe in conspiracies, to endorse alternative narratives, or to believe in conspiratorial alternative narratives. To adjudicate between these interpretations, we carried out three experimental studies (Ns = 364, 772, 629) in which we experimentally manipulated the respective statuses (endorsed by authorities vs. rejected by the authorities) of competing conspiratorial and non-conspiratorial explanations for fictitious controversial events. Overall, conspiracy mentality predicted the endorsement of conspiratorial explanations and the rejection of non-conspiratorial explanations. However, these relationships were moderated by the respective statuses of these explanations. When authorities endorsed the conspiratorial explanation and rejected the non-conspiratorial explanation, the relationships were either nullified (in Studies 1 & 3) or attenuated (in study 2). These effects were driven by participants scoring low on the conspiracy mentality measures, who reported a lower endorsement of the conspiratorial explanation when it was rejected by authorities. They also reported a stronger endorsement of the non-conspiratorial explanation when it was presented as endorsed by authorities. By contrast, conspiracy believers' endorsement of the explanations was unaffected by their status. Abstract: Depuis la mise en production du puits Mib-01X vers les années 1976 par la société CHEVRON -TEXACO, ce puits connait le problème de baisse de production qui a perduré jusqu’à l’accession de cette concession offshore par la société Perenco-Rep en 2006 qui en son tour, a repris une réévaluation de réserves du champ MIBALE aujourd’hui en Production. Après sa reprise, la production de Mib-01X ne fait que décroitre d’une manière drastique ; c’est ainsi une étude a été faite pour connaitre la performance de Mibale – 01X et présenter le procédé d’activation pour optimiser la production et maximiser la récupération d’huile dans le puits Mibale 01X. Sur la base des données de test de production actuelle, la performance du puits a été évaluée grâce à l’utilisation du logiciel PROSPER et la production a été optimisée par la mise en place d’un système de pompage électrique submersible (ESP). Nous avons déterminé aussi le design du puits avec le type de pompe adéquate pour avoir des débits plus grands que l’état actuelle du puits et une étude économique a été faite pour une bonne prise de décision. L’activation du puits Mibale 01X par la pompe ESP donne un débit de 1207,7 bbl/j supérieur au débit initial 911 bbl/J, avec un gain de 296, 7 bbl/j de la production d’huile. Les résultats obtenus dans cette étude sont convenables et favorisent le passage de l’activation du puits de gas lift en pompe submersible immergé (ESP).

Abstract: We describe the preparation, characterization, and imaging studies of rhenium carbonyl complexes with a pyta (4-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,3-triazole) or tapy (1-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,3-triazole)-based heteroaromatic N∧N ligand and thiolate or selenoate X ligand. The stability and photophysical properties of the selenolate complexes are compared with parent chloride complexes and previously described analogues with benzenethiolate ligands. Two complexes were imaged in A549 cells upon excitation at 405 nm. Colocalization studies suggest a lysosomal accumulation, while one parent chloride complex was described to localize at the Golgi apparatus. Preliminary fluorescence lifetime measurements and imaging demonstrate potential for application in time-resolved microscopy techniques due to the long and variable lifetimes observed in cellular environments, including an increase in lifetime between the solution and solid state many times larger than previously reported.

Abstract: Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions' effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people's initial climate beliefs. These findings suggest that the impact of behavioral climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviors.

Abstract: Gamma-ray bursts are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The recent GRB 221009A event, identified as the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected, provides a unique opportunity to investigate hadronic emissions involving neutrinos. The KM3NeT undersea neutrino detectors participated in the worldwide follow-up effort triggered by the event, searching for neutrino events. In this letter, we summarize subsequent searches, in a wide energy range from MeV up to a few PeVs. No neutrino events are found in any of the searches performed. Abstract: Extracting precise cosmology from weak lensing surveys requires modelling the non-linear matter power spectrum, which is suppressed at small scales due to baryonic feedback processes. However, hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulations make widely varying predictions for the amplitude and extent of this effect. We use measurements of Dark Energy Survey Year 3 weak lensing (WL) and Atacama Cosmology Telescope DR5 kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) to jointly constrain cosmological and astrophysical baryonic feedback parameters using a flexible analytical model, `baryonification'. First, using WL only, we compare the $S_8$ constraints using baryonification to a simulation-calibrated halo model, a simulation-based emulator model and the approach of discarding WL measurements on small angular scales. We find that model flexibility can shift the value of $S_8$ and degrade the uncertainty. The kSZ provides additional constraints on the astrophysical parameters and shifts $S_8$ to $S_8=0.823^{+0.019}_{-0.020}$, a higher value than attained using the WL-only analysis. We measure the suppression of the non-linear matter power spectrum using WL + kSZ and constrain a mean feedback scenario that is more extreme than the predictions from most hydrodynamical simulations. We constrain the baryon fractions and the gas mass fractions and find them to be generally lower than inferred from X-ray observations and simulation predictions. We conclude that the WL + kSZ measurements provide a new and complementary benchmark for building a coherent picture of the impact of gas around galaxies across observations.

Abstract: We measure the stacked lensing signal in the direction of galaxy clusters in the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) redMaPPer sample, using cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature data from SPT-3G, the third-generation CMB camera on the South Pole Telescope (SPT). We estimate the lensing signal using temperature maps constructed from the initial 2 years of data from the SPT-3G 'Main' survey, covering 1500 deg$^2$ of the Southern sky. We then use this signal as a proxy for the mean cluster mass of the DES sample. In this work, we employ three versions of the redMaPPer catalogue: a Flux-Limited sample containing 8865 clusters, a Volume-Limited sample with 5391 clusters, and a Volume&Redshift-Limited sample with 4450 clusters. For the three samples, we find the mean cluster masses to be ${M}_{200{\rm{m}}}=1.66\pm0.13$ [stat.]$\pm0.03$ [sys.], $1.97\pm0.18$ [stat.]$\pm0.05$ [sys.], and $2.11\pm0.20$ [stat.]$\pm0.05$ [sys.]$\times{10}^{14}\ {\rm{M}}_{\odot }$, respectively. This is a factor of $\sim2$ improvement relative to the precision of measurements with previous generations of SPT surveys and the most constraining cluster mass measurements using CMB cluster lensing to date. Overall, we find no significant tensions between our results and masses given by redMaPPer mass-richness scaling relations of previous works, which were calibrated using CMB cluster lensing, optical weak lensing, and velocity dispersion measurements from various combinations of DES, SDSS and Planck data. We then divide our sample into 3 redshift and 3 richness bins, finding no significant tensions with optical weak-lensing calibrated masses in these bins. We forecast a $5.8\%$ constraint on the mean cluster mass of the DES Y3 sample with the complete SPT-3G surveys when using both temperature and polarization data and including an additional $\sim1400$ deg$^2$ of observations from the 'Extended' SPT-3G survey., Comment: 21 pages; 8 figures; To be submitted to JCAP; comments welcome

Abstract: High-energy neutrinos could be produced in the interaction of charged cosmic rays with matter or radiation surrounding astrophysical sources. To look for transient sources associated with neutrino emission, a follow-up program of neutrino alerts has been operating within the ANTARES Collaboration since 2009. This program, named TAToO, has triggered robotic optical telescopes (MASTER, TAROT, ROTSE and the SVOM ground based telescopes) immediately after the detection of any relevant neutrino candidate and scheduled several observations in the weeks following the detection. A subset of ANTARES events with highest probabilities of being of cosmic origin has also been followed by the Swift and the INTEGRAL satellites, the Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope and the H.E.S.S. high-energy gamma-ray telescope. The results of twelve years of observations are reported. No optical counterpart has been significantly associated with an ANTARES candidate neutrino signal during image analysis. Constraints on transient neutrino emission have been set. In September 2015, ANTARES issued a neutrino alert and during the follow-up, a potential transient counterpart was identified by Swift and MASTER. A multi-wavelength follow-up campaign has allowed to identify the nature of this source and has proven its fortuitous association with the neutrino. Abstract: Current and future Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) surveys will need to adopt new approaches to classifying SNe and obtaining their redshifts without spectra if they wish to reach their full potential. We present here a novel approach that uses only photometry to identify SNe Ia in the 5-year Dark Energy Survey (DES) dataset using the SUPERNNOVA classifier. Our approach, which does not rely on any information from the SN host-galaxy, recovers SNe Ia that might otherwise be lost due to a lack of an identifiable host. We select 2,298 high-quality SNe Ia from the DES 5-year dataset. More than 700 of these have no spectroscopic host redshift and are potentially new SNIa compared to the DES-SN5YR cosmology analysis. To analyse these SNe Ia, we derive their redshifts and properties using only their light-curves with a modified version of the SALT2 light-curve fitter. Compared to other DES SN Ia samples with spectroscopic redshifts, our new sample has in average higher redshift, bluer and broader light-curves, and fainter host-galaxies. Future surveys such as LSST will also face an additional challenge, the scarcity of spectroscopic resources for follow-up. When applying our novel method to DES data, we reduce the need for follow-up by a factor of four and three for host-galaxy and live SN respectively compared to earlier approaches. Abstract: The KM3NeT/ARCA neutrino detector is currently under construction at 3500 m depth offshore Capo Passero, Sicily, in the Mediterranean Sea. The main science objectives are the detection of high-energy cosmic neutrinos and the discovery of their sources. Simulations were conducted for the full KM3NeT/ARCA detector, instrumenting a volume of 1 km$^3$, to estimate the sensitivity and discovery potential to point-like neutrino sources and an all-sky diffuse neutrino flux. This paper covers the reconstruction of track- and shower-like signatures, as well as the criteria employed for neutrino event selection. By leveraging both the track and shower observation channels, the KM3NeT/ARCA detector demonstrates the capability to detect the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux within half a year of operation, achieving a 5$\sigma$ statistical significance. With an angular resolution below 0.1$^\circ$ for tracks and under 2$^\circ$ for showers, the sensitivity to point-like neutrino sources surpasses existing observed limits across the entire sky., Comment: 20 pages, 30 figures Submitted to EPJ-C

Abstract: We present the angular diameter distance measurement obtained with the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation feature from galaxy clustering in the completed Dark Energy Survey, consisting of six years (Y6) of observations. We use the Y6 BAO galaxy sample, optimized for BAO science in the redshift range 0.6<$z$<1.2, with an effective redshift at $z_{\rm eff}$=0.85 and split into six tomographic bins. The sample has nearly 16 million galaxies over 4,273 square degrees. Our consensus measurement constrains the ratio of the angular distance to sound horizon scale to $D_M(z_{\rm eff})/r_d$ = 19.51$\pm$0.41 (at 68.3% confidence interval), resulting from comparing the BAO position in our data to that predicted by Planck $\Lambda$CDM via the BAO shift parameter $\alpha=(D_M/r_d)/(D_M/r_d)_{\rm Planck}$. To achieve this, the BAO shift is measured with three different methods, Angular Correlation Function (ACF), Angular Power Spectrum (APS), and Projected Correlation Function (PCF) obtaining $\alpha=$ 0.952$\pm$0.023, 0.962$\pm$0.022, and 0.955$\pm$0.020, respectively, which we combine to $\alpha=$ 0.957$\pm$0.020, including systematic errors. When compared with the $\Lambda$CDM model that best fits Planck data, this measurement is found to be 4.3% and 2.1$\sigma$ below the angular BAO scale predicted. To date, it represents the most precise angular BAO measurement at $z$>0.75 from any survey and the most precise measurement at any redshift from photometric surveys. Abstract: We present cosmological constraints from the sample of Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) discovered during the full five years of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Supernova Program. In contrast to most previous cosmological samples, in which SN are classified based on their spectra, we classify the DES SNe using a machine learning algorithm applied to their light curves in four photometric bands. Spectroscopic redshifts are acquired from a dedicated follow-up survey of the host galaxies. After accounting for the likelihood of each SN being a SN Ia, we find 1635 DES SN in the redshift range $0.100.5$ SNe compared to the previous leading compilation of Pantheon+, and results in the tightest cosmological constraints achieved by any SN data set to date. To derive cosmological constraints we combine the DES supernova data with a high-quality external low-redshift sample consisting of 194 SNe Ia spanning $0.025

20. Numerical simulation of windsurfing sail aerodynamics: Insights into forces and flow characteristics

Abstract: In windsurfing, the sail is the primary source of propulsive force. Due to the unique shape and structure, the aerodynamic performance of a windsurfing sail is not well understood. This study aims to investigate the aerodynamic performance of a windsurfing sail under various angles of attack and sail heights using steady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations. The simulations were validated with wind tunnel measurements. The study finds that the local maximum lift coefficient and stall angle are different at different sections along the sail height. Further investigations on the pressure distributions and sectional flow fields indicate that the different sectional lift coefficients and stall are significantly influenced by the geometric profiles and orientations of the luff pocket. The sectional geometric profile consists of a reduced camber near the sail tip, which is prone to flow separation. Thus, flow separation first occurred at the sail tip with increasing angle of attack, then extended towards the sail foot. During flow separation, a recirculation region was found on the suction side of the sail, leading to a reduction in lift and increase in drag. The findings of this study provide insights into the aerodynamic forces and flow characteristics of windsurfing sails, which can be applied to improve sail design and performance.

Abstract: Populism is on the rise across liberal democracies. The sociopsychological underpinnings of this increasing endorsement of populist ideology should be uncovered. In an online cross-sectional survey study among adult samples from five countries (Chile, France, Italy, Romania, and the United Kingdom; N = 9,105), we aimed to replicate an economic distress pattern in which relative deprivation and identity threat are associated with populism. We further tested a cultural backlash pattern-including perceived anomie, collective narcissism, and identity threat as predictors of populism. Multigroup structural equation models supported both economic distress and cultural backlash paths as predictors of populist thin ideology endorsement. In both paths, identity threat to belonging played a significant role as partial mediator. Furthermore, an integrative model showed that the two patterns were not mutually exclusive. These findings emphasize the implication of identity threat to belonging as an explanatory mediator and demonstrate the cross-national generalizability of these patterns.

Abstract: Plant material culture can offer unique insights into the ways of life of prehistoric societies; however, its perishable nature has prevented a thorough understanding of its diverse and complex uses. Sites with exceptional preservation of organic materials provide a unique opportunity for further research. The burial site of Cueva de los Murciélagos in southern Iberia, uncovered during 19th-century mining activities, contained the best-preserved hunter-gatherer basketry in southern Europe, together with other unique organic artifacts associated with the first farming communities, such as sandals and a wooden hammer. We present 14 14C dates for the perishable artifacts (N = 76), situating the assemblage between the Early and Middle Holocene (c. 7500 to 4200 cal BCE). Our integrated analysis includes raw material determination and technological and chrono-cultural contextualization of this unique and important set of materials.

26. Towards effective governance of information in a Brazilian agricultural research organisation

Abstract: There are three different uses of the term 'information' in ordinary language: in the restricted sense, it means diverse types of material objects, such as data or documents ('information as thing'); alternatively, the term is used as in reference to the act of informing or becoming informed ('information as process'), or to equate to knowledge ('information as knowledge'). Each of these connotations represents a legitimate view of information in its own right, being equally significant to information-intensive organisations. The literature lacks studies that approach information from an integrative viewpoint, however. The purpose of this study was to explore and develop the notion of 'information governance' as an integrative, systemic approach to information in the context of research organisations. Soft Systems Methodology was used in a case study involving the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation. Qualitative data was gathered through in-depth interviews with researchers and information/knowledge managers, followed by a thematic, two-level analysis. From a 'macro level' of analysis (the wider Brazilian agricultural research system) it was found that, to solve increasingly complex research problems, collaborative, multidisciplinary networking is needed. On the other hand, competitive forces are continuously emanating from the systems of research steering, funds and resources' allocation, quality control, and recognition and reward. This conflict inhibits the collaborative sharing of 'information as thing' and 'as knowledge', disturbs internal communication flows and contributes to low levels of synergy and cross-departmental partnerships, ultimately affecting research outcomes. At a 'meso level' (the local practices and culture of agricultural knowledge production), different epistemic cultures were identified (named in vitro, in situ and in silico research), which respond differently to the opposing forces of collaboration and competition. Based on a deep understanding of the agricultural research system and underlying epistemic cultures, a framework for effective governance of information was developed. Action to improve the governance of information at Embrapa would involve nurturing an information culture that supports collaborative work. Given that interactions between researchers are determined by their individual pursuits and struggles, this would require a change in the corporate system of performance evaluation and reward, according to the different epistemic cultures.

27. Failures of imagination : terrorist incident response in the context of crisis management

Abstract: Since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, New York in September 2001, the focus on terrorism and the ability of society and organisations to withstand such incidents has sharpened considerably. At the same time, business continuity and dealing with crises have moved to the forefront of organisations' awareness, not least due to improved regulatory requirements and guidelines. However, this thesis contends that the current methodological framework for responding to terrorist incidents is flawed, resulting in the same issues becoming evident, over and over again. It is argued that an awareness and adoption of three key risk and crisis management methodologies: Fink's Crisis Management Methodology, Risk Communication and Isomorphic Learning, could improve the analysis of such incidents and hence better the response in future. Three significant terrorist attacks were analysed within the context of contemporary literature and two factors were found to be the main cause of difficulties in managing the response to each of the incidents: communication and an inability to achieve organisational learning. It was argued that part of the reason for this was that organisations did not consider a link between crisis and terrorist incident response management and that learning from past experiences did not go beyond the most superficial level in most instances. This thesis demonstrated how risk and crisis management methodologies could have addressed each of the issues that were identified in the case studies and clarified the contribution that they could make. Of primary importance was the recognition that events that may appear dissimilar are, on examination, frequently intrinsically similar and hence can provide valuable learning opportunities.

28. Physiological ecology of understorey trees in low impact silvicultural systems

Abstract: Continuous cover forestry (CCF), an alternative forest management approach to clearfelling, is increasingly being adopted in the UK. It aims at enhancing stand structural diversity and favouring natural regeneration and subsequent seedling growth below the existing canopy of plantation forests. One area of limited knowledge is the critical level of below-canopy light for the growth of naturally regenerating seedlings. In addition, plant growth beneath canopies is influenced by other factors (e.g. herbivory). Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr. (Sitka spruce) seedlings under canopies have been observed to be severely damaged by Elatobium abietinum (Walker) (green spruce aphid) attacks. The combined effects of light availability and insect attack on seedling growth are not well understood, however, this understanding is crucial in order to ensure successful management of regeneration within CCF systems. A controlled experiment, which mimicked different natural understorey light levels along with repeated artificial aphid infestation, was conducted over two years to look at seedling performance through structural and physiological (chlorophyll fluorescence) measurements. Aphid population assessments showed significant increased population density under shaded conditions. Nevertheless, aphid impacts were mainly localised in extent while the impact of light was the major component that described seedling growth. Light was the primary factor affecting the whole-plant biomass, whereas aphids had only localised effects on the total dry weight of older needles and roots, and on leader extension growth. A significant interaction between light levels and presence/absence of aphid infestation was found for main leader extension growth of the seedlings during the second year of the experiment, with lower values at low light levels under infestation. Plant biomass allocation was affected strongly by light, while aphid presence did not result in significant changes. At the leaf physiologylevel, the light environment was found to be the main driving factor affecting photosynthetic response, whilst aphid presence had only a short-term localised effect on photosynthesis. The impact of light levels and aphid presence on seedling growth were also determined at an experimental field site where plots were located across two light regimes typical of CCF conditions in upland UK coniferous forests. The comparison of the photosynthetic response of the seedlings in both the controlled and field experiment highlighted the importance of considering the temporal heterogeneity of the light environment experienced by understorey seedlings in CCF stands, while aphid and aphid x light interaction effects could not be determined due to very low aphid levels during the year. Finally, a pre-existing light model was parameterised to predict the understorey light environment required to promote successful seedling growth in CCF stands. Sensitivity and validation analyses were also performed.

29. Information systems implementation and IT-enabled organisational change in the Eastern Caribbean tourism sector : an examination of factors impacting on the successful adoption and use of the Internet and web-based systems in national tourist offices and the Caribbean Tourism Organisation

Abstract: This research project addresses the adoption of the Internet and implementation of webbased systems by quasi-governmental organisations responsible for the management of tourism in the small island developing states (SIDS) in the Eastern Caribbean. The key aspects of this work entail the examination oft the factors which impact upon the systems implementation process and IT-enabled organisational change, levels of Internet adoption and maturity, the extent to which the implementation of web-based systems and e-business activities are being conducted within a strategic framework and the impacts and outcomes of the e-business activities in the tourism sector in these islands. Four in-depth case studies were conducted and data collected from a wide range of sources, across five of the islands, focusing primarily on the National Tourist Offices - and the regional tourism body, the Caribbean Tourism Organisation. Several models were used to address the key aspects of this study. It was found that while Internet penetration is relatively high, most web sites and web-based systems still have a limited focus on basic information provision and communication, as opposed to distribution and transaction oriented activities. The web-based systems in the National Tourist Offices are, for the most part, not being implemented within a broader strategic framework. The central aspect of this work deals with the analysis of factors which impact upon the successful implementation of web-based systems. A conception-reality (CR) gap model was used in the assessment of the organisational context variables in the information systems implementation process. The most significant factors affecting the implementation of webbased systems, indicated by wide CR gaps, were: financing constraints, a low level of emphasis placed on these initiatives and the limited integration of IT with related business processes. A distinct `organisational lag' was noted between technological innovation and administrative or process innovations. The critical impact of the wide gap in levels of management understanding is also addressed. The technology gap was moderate, and narrow gap levels were found for communication and user participation, which correlated with narrow gaps for clarity of objectives, staff acceptance and motivation. The broader context of this work is the phenomenon often referred to as the `Digital Divide'. Based on the findings of this work, it is argued that the wide chasms between countries of the North and those of the South cannot be defined only, or indeed primarily, in `technological terms'. The utilization of the new information and communications technology (ICT), as a means of social and economic advancement in developing countries, clearly requires firstly, the successful adoption and implementation of the relevant technologies. The overriding focus, however, must be on bridging key dimensions of the `conception-reality' gap, of which `technology' is but one aspect. This would result in fundamental changes, at the individual, organisational and national levels, fostering greater levels of social and economic progress, as well as in the process, narrow the `digital divide'.

Abstract: Hot, ionized gas leaves an imprint on the cosmic microwave background via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. The cross-correlation of gravitational lensing (which traces the projected mass) with the tSZ effect (which traces the projected gas pressure) is a powerful probe of the thermal state of ionized baryons throughout the Universe and is sensitive to effects such as baryonic feedback. In a companion paper (Gatti et al. Phys. Rev. D 105, 123525 (2022)PRVDAQ2470-0010), we present tomographic measurements and validation tests of the cross-correlation between Galaxy shear measurements from the first three years of observations of the Dark Energy Survey and tSZ measurements from a combination of Atacama Cosmology Telescope and Planck observations. In this work, we use the same measurements to constrain models for the pressure profiles of halos across a wide range of halo mass and redshift. We find evidence for reduced pressure in low-mass halos, consistent with predictions for the effects of feedback from active Galactic nuclei. We infer the hydrostatic mass bias (BM500c/MSZ) from our measurements, finding B=1.8±0.1 when adopting the Planck-preferred cosmological parameters. We additionally find that our measurements are consistent with a nonzero redshift evolution of B, with the correct sign and sufficient magnitude to explain the mass bias necessary to reconcile cluster count measurements with the Planck-preferred cosmology. Our analysis introduces a model for the impact of intrinsic alignments (IAs) of galaxy shapes on the shear-tSZ correlation. We show that IA can have a significant impact on these correlations at current noise levels.

Abstract: We present a detailed chemical abundance analysis of the brightest star in the ultrafaint dwarf (UFD) galaxy candidate Cetus II from high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectra. For this star, DES J011740.53-173053, abundances or upper limits of 18 elements from carbon to europium are derived. Its chemical abundances generally follow those of other UFD galaxy stars, with a slight enhancement of the alpha-elements (Mg, Si, and Ca) and low neutron-capture element (Sr, Ba, and Eu) abundances supporting the classification of Cetus II as a likely UFD. The star exhibits lower Sc, Ti, and V abundances than Milky Way (MW) halo stars with similar metallicity. This signature is consistent with yields from a supernova originating from a star with a mass of similar to 11.2 M-circle dot. In addition, the star has a potassium abundance of [K/Fe] = 0.81, which is somewhat higher than the K abundances of MW halo stars with similar metallicity, a signature that is also present in a number of UFD galaxies. A comparison including globular clusters and stellar stream stars suggests that high K is a specific characteristic of some UFD galaxy stars and can thus be used to help classify objects as UFD galaxies.

32. Evaluation of field-testing protocols to diagnose insulin dysregulation in ponies using a Bayesian approach

Abstract: Field tests and their association with laminitis have not been evaluated in large cohorts. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of basal insulin (BI), the oral sugar test (OST) and the insulin tolerance test (ITT) to diagnose ID and investigate their association with laminitis. Insulin dysregulation status was determined in 146 ponies using BI (insulin concentration >20 µIU/mL), an OST (insulin concentration >65 µIU/mL at 60 or 90 min after oral administration of 0.45 mL/kg corn syrup) and an ITT (< 50% reduction in glucose concentration 30 min after intravenous administration of 0.1 IU/kg insulin). Laminitis was identified using modified-Obel scores. A Bayesian approach was used to define the characteristics of the tests and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to assess their association with laminitis. All tests were well tolerated and laminitis was diagnosed in 9% of ponies. Insulin dysregulation was diagnosed in 15% of ponies using BI, 38% using the OST and 54% using the ITT with 11% of ponies positive for all three tests. The sensitivities and specificities of BI, the OST and the ITT to diagnose ID were 0.52 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.35-0.79) and 0.97 (95% CI, 0.91 - 1.00), 0.84 (95% CI, 0.70 - 0.94) and 0.60 (95% CI, 0.49 - 0.71), and 0.85 (95% CI, 0.68-0.96) and 0.88 (95% CI, 0.75 - 0.97), respectively. Only BI and the OST were associated with laminitis (P = 0.003 and 0.015, respectively).

Abstract: La question de la prise en compte par les Parlements nationaux de l’activité des organes de protection des droits humains a été au centre de récentes controverses, tout comme celle de la prise en compte de l’activité des Parlements par les organes de protection des droits humains. L’origine de ces controverses réside dans le fait que le rôle des Parlements dans la garantie des droits et libertés reste une source de malentendus et d’incompréhensions, particulièrement lorsqu’on l’envisage au-delà du principe de légalité. L’identification de la contribution des Parlements à la garantie des droits soulève en effet des interrogations majeures sur l’articulation entre, d’une part, le respect du principe de l’état de droit, et, d’autre part, celui de la démocratie parlementaire. L’ambigüité de la relation entre Parlements et droits et libertés en est la cause, les Parlements ayant été considérés, au gré des mutations du constitutionnalisme, tantôt comme des acteurs du respect des droits et libertés, tantôt comme des menaces. La présente contribution, dédiée à la contribution des commissions d'enquête parlementaire à la garantie des droits et libertés, revient sur cette ambiguïté, pour la dissiper et identifier les limites et les potentialités d'un contrôle parlementaire des droits et libertés.

Abstract: Item does not contain fulltext, We describe the MalariaGEN Pf7 data resource, the seventh release of Plasmodium falciparum genome variation data from the MalariaGEN network. It comprises over 20,000 samples from 82 partner studies in 33 countries, including several malaria endemic regions that were previously underrepresented. For the first time we include dried blood spot samples that were sequenced after selective whole genome amplification, necessitating new methods to genotype copy number variations. We identify a large number of newly emerging crt mutations in parts of Southeast Asia, and show examples of heterogeneities in patterns of drug resistance within Africa and within the Indian subcontinent. We describe the profile of variations in the C-terminal of the csp gene and relate this to the sequence used in the RTS,S and R21 malaria vaccines. Pf7 provides high-quality data on genotype calls for 6 million SNPs and short indels, analysis of large deletions that cause failure of rapid diagnostic tests, and systematic characterisation of six major drug resistance loci, all of which can be freely downloaded from the MalariaGEN website.

Abstract: Since 2015 the LIGO and Virgo interferometers have detected gravitational waves from almost one hundred coalescences of compact objects (black holes and neutron stars). This article presents the results of a search performed with data from the ANTARES telescope to identify neutrino counterparts to the gravitational wave sources detected during the third LIGO/Virgo observing run and reported in the catalogues GWTC-2, GWTC-2.1, and GWTC-3. This search is sensitive to all-sky neutrinos of all flavours and of energies > 100 GeV, thanks to the inclusion of both track-like events (mainly induced by ¿µ chargedcurrent interactions) and shower-like events (induced by other interaction types). Neutrinos are selected if they are detected within ±500 s from the GW merger and with a reconstructed direction compatible with its sky localisation. No significant excess is found for any of the 80 analysed GW events, and upper limits on the neutrino emission are derived. Using the information from the GW catalogues and assuming isotropic emission, upper limits on the total energy Etot,¿ emitted as neutrinos of all flavours and on the ratio f¿ = Etot,¿/EGW between neutrino and GW emissions are also computed. Finally, a stacked analysis of all the 72 binary black hole mergers (respectively the 7 neutron star-black hole merger candidates) has been performed to constrain the typical neutrino emission within this population, leading to the limits: Etot,¿ < 4.0 × 1053 erg and f¿ < 0.15 (respectively, Etot,¿ < 3.2 × 1053 erg and f¿ < 0.88) for E-2 spectrum and isotropic emission. Abstract: We cross-match and compare characteristics of galaxy clusters identified in observations from two sky surveys using two completely different techniques. One sample is optically selected from the analysis of 3 years of Dark Energy Survey observations using the redMaPPer cluster detection algorithm. The second is X-ray selected from XMM observations analysed by the XMM Cluster Survey. The samples comprise a total area of 57.4 deg(2), bounded by the area of four contiguous XMM survey regions that overlap the DES footprint. We find that the X-ray-selected sample is fully matched with entries in the redMaPPer catalogue, above lambda > 20 and within 0.1 < z < 0.9. Conversely, only 38 per cent of the redMaPPer catalogue is matched to an X-ray extended source. Next, using 120 optically clusters and 184 X-ray-selected clusters, we investigate the form of the X-ray luminosity-temperature (L-X -T-X ), luminosity-richness (L-X - lambda), and temperature-richness (T-X - lambda) scaling relations. We find that the fitted forms of the L-X -T-X relations are consistent between the two selection methods and also with other studies in the literature. However, we find tentative evidence for a steepening of the slope of the relation for low richness systems in the X-ray-selected sample. When considering the scaling of richness with X-ray properties, we again find consistency in the relations (i.e. L-X - lambda and T-X - lambda) between the optical and X-ray-selected samples. This is contrary to previous similar works that find a significant increase in the scatter of the luminosity scaling relation for X-ray-selected samples compared to optically selected samples.

Abstract: Financial literacy is knowledge and skills to apply understanding of concepts and risks, skills to be able to make effective decisions in the financial environment to improve financial performance. This research was conducted to analyze the Education of a Culture of Saving as an Initial Investment in Improving the Financial Literacy of Early Childhood Children in Kindergarten Tunas Muda IKKT Jati Makmur. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of a culture of saving as a child's initial investment in increasing financial literacy education at TK Tunas Muda IKKT Jati Makmur.This study used a qualitative descriptive research methodology. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observations and notes. The results of the study show that there is a visible effect of change, that 39.22% of the 106 children have not yet saved; it can be seen that the child's low interest in saving can be seen, and the lack of understanding of financial literacy prior to the existence of a saving culture activity. After introducing financial literacy activities and implementing a culture of saving as an investment for 3 months, it was recorded that 79% of the 106 children saved regularly and 21% of children interested in not saving regularly.

Abstract: Interactions of cosmic ray protons, atomic nuclei, and electrons in the interstellar medium in the inner part of the Milky Way produce a ¿-ray flux from the Galactic Ridge. If the ¿-ray emission is dominated by proton and nuclei interactions, a neutrino flux comparable to the ¿-ray flux is expected from the same sky region. Data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope are used to constrain the neutrino flux from the Galactic Ridge in the 1-100 TeV energy range. Neutrino events reconstructed both as tracks and showers are considered in the analysis and the selection is optimized for the search of an excess in the region |l| <30¿, |b| <2¿. The expected background in the search region is estimated using an off-zone region with similar sky coverage. Neutrino signal originating from a power-law spectrum with spectral index ranging from ¿=1to 4is simulated in both channels. The observed energy distributions are fitted to constrain the neutrino emission from the Ridge. The energy distributions in the signal region are inconsistent with the background expectation at ~96% confidence level. The mild excess over the background is consistent with a neutrino flux with a power law with a spectral index 2.45+0.22 -0.34and a flux normalization dN¿ dE¿ =4.0+2.7 -2.0 ×10-16GeV-1cm-2s-1sr-1 at 40 TeV reference energy. Abstract: Within the frame of the RadoNorm project (https://www.radonorm.eu/), the goal is to better understand the importance of hydrogeochemical and chemical processes for radionuclides’ transfer in the environment with a focus on Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM). In that context, a wetland in a downstream area of a former uranium mine tailing, i. e. the Rophin site, has been selected and the following water flows and solute transport models, in 1, 2 or 3 D could be used: HYTEC [1], HYDRUS [2], CIEMAT model [3], and MELODIE [4]. This application should allow to understand the fate of uranium and radium observed in the wetland area, the link between radionuclides’ concentration in the wetland and in the crossing stream and also to highlight a possible transfer of radionuclides to the groundwater. The Rophin site located in the department of Puy-de-Dôme of the region Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes (France) where measured dose rates are 20 to 30 times higher than the background along the Gourgeat stream and in a so-called “wetland area”. A source of contamination is present due to successive discharges from settling ponds during the operational phase of the mine and located in the whitish layer of the wetland, where three different soil horizons are identified (an organic-rich surface layer, a whitish layer, and a paleosol layer). The watershed has been equipped since 2019 with piezometers and surface sensors to monitor the water (electrical conductivity, temperature and water flow). Metereological data is available to identify patterns for precipitation regimes for the wet and dry seasons. First results from measuring campaigns in 2021 and 2022 confirm the presence of a groundwater table in the wetland, which is rather close to the surface and varies depending on meterological conditions. 45. The practice of formative assessment in the teaching/learning process of written expression in 4th grade

Abstract: Evaluation is one of the multiple obligations that a teacher must fulfill after a series of teaching/learning sessions. The objective of this research is to study the practice of formative assessment in the process of teaching/learning written expression in general education colleges. To achieve this objective, a mixed methodology was used which combines questionnaires, direct observation and documentary analysis for data collection. The results obtained reveal that more than half of the teachers experience difficulty mastering the techniques that allow them to properly teach and guide learning during written expression teaching sessions. Many teachers do not spend enough time doing exercises that allow students to become familiar with the different stages of understanding a subject. Teachers' difficulties have repercussions on the work of students, more than half of whom never pass the average. The formative assessment that most French teachers practice when learning written expression seems to leave room for arbitrariness and subjectivism; it does not occur at the end of each learning task. Consequently, current teaching practices and those of formative assessment do not make it possible to improve the quality of learning and academic performance in terms of written expression., L’évaluation fait partie des multiples obligations qu’un enseignant doit remplir après une série de séances d’enseignement/apprentissage. L’objectif de cette recherche est d’étudier la pratique de l’évaluation formative dans le processus d’enseignement/apprentissage de l’expression écrite au collège d’enseignement général. Pour atteindre cet objectif, l’on a utilisé une méthodologie mixte qui combine questionnaires, observation directe et analyse documentaire pour la collecte de donnée. Les résultats obtenus révèlent que plus de la moitié des enseignants éprouve des difficultés à maîtriser les techniques qui leur permettent d’enseigner et de guider convenablement l’apprentissage lors des séances d’enseignement de l’expression écrite. Bon nombre d’enseignants ne consacrent pas assez de temps à faire des exercices qui permettent aux élèves de se familiariser avec les différentes étapes de la compréhension d’un sujet. Les difficultés des enseignants se répercutent sur le travail des élèves dont plus de la moitié n’a jamais la moyenne. L’évaluation formative que la plupart des enseignants de français pratiquent lors de l’apprentissage de l’expression écrite semble laisser une place à l’arbitraire et au subjectivisme ; elle n’intervient pas au terme de chaque tâche d’apprentissage. Par conséquent, les pratiques enseignantes actuelles et celles de l’évaluation formative ne permettent pas d’améliorer la qualité des apprentissages et les rendements scolaires en matière d’expression écrite.

Abstract: Infragravity (hereafter ‘IG’) waves are ocean waves related to the presence of groups in incident shortwaves. The importance of IG waves in the nearshore and their role in beach morphodynamics have been widely documented over the last few decades (Bertin et al., 2018) while in contrast, studies on characterisation of IG waves and related impacts in tidal inlets are scarce and have only recently begun to be addressed (Williams and Stacey, 2016). Nonetheless, existing studies tend to show that IG waves in tidal inlets can play an important role in the short and long-term hydro-morphodynamics of coastal lagoons. The current study presents the first large scale field measurements and analysis of IG waves propagation and characteristics in a meso-macro tidal lagoon/inlet.

Abstract: The various Euclid imaging surveys will become a reference for studies of galaxy morphology by delivering imaging over an unprecedented area of 15 000 square degrees with high spatial resolution. In order to understand the capabilities of measuring morphologies from Euclid-detected galaxies and to help implement measurements in the pipeline of the Organisational Unit MER of the Euclid Science Ground Segment, we have conducted the Euclid Morphology Challenge, which we present in two papers. While the companion paper focusses on the analysis of photometry, this paper assesses the accuracy of the parametric galaxy morphology measurements in imaging predicted from within the Euclid Wide Survey. We evaluate the performance of five state-of-the-art surface-brightness-fitting codes, DeepLeGATo, Galapagos-2, Morfometryka, ProFit and SourceXtractor++, on a sample of about 1.5 million simulated galaxies (350 000 above 5s) resembling reduced observations with the Euclid VIS and NIR instruments. The simulations include analytic Sérsic profiles with one and two components, as well as more realistic galaxies generated with neural networks. We find that, despite some code-specific differences, all methods tend to achieve reliable structural measurements (< 10% scatter on ideal Sérsic simulations) down to an apparent magnitude of about IE = 23 in one component and IE = 21 in two components, which correspond to a signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 1 and 5, respectively. We also show that when tested on non-analytic profiles, the results are typically degraded by a factor of 3, driven by systematics. We conclude that the official Euclid Data Releases will deliver robust structural parameters for at least 400 million galaxies in the Euclid Wide Survey by the end of the mission. We find that a key factor for explaining the different behaviour of the codes at the faint end is the set of adopted priors for the various structural parameters.

Abstract: The European Space Agency's Euclid mission will provide high-quality imaging for about 1.5 billion galaxies. A software pipeline to automatically process and analyse such a huge amount of data in real time is being developed by the Science Ground Segment of the Euclid Consortium; this pipeline will include a model-fitting algorithm, which will provide photometric and morphological estimates of paramount importance for the core science goals of the mission and for legacy science. The Euclid Morphology Challenge is a comparative investigation of the performance of five model-fitting software packages on simulated Euclid data, aimed at providing the baseline to identify the best-suited algorithm to be implemented in the pipeline. In this paper we describe the simulated dataset, and we discuss the photometry results. A companion paper is focussed on the structural and morphological estimates. We created mock Euclid images simulating five fields of view of 0.48 deg2 each in the IE band of the VIS instrument, containing a total of about one and a half million galaxies (of which 350 000 have a nominal signal-to-noise ratio above 5), each with three realisations of galaxy profiles (single and double Sérsic, and 'realistic' profiles obtained with a neural network); for one of the fields in the double Sérsic realisation, we also simulated images for the three near-infrared YE, JE, and HE bands of the NISP-P instrument, and five Rubin/LSST optical complementary bands (u, g, r, i, and z), which together form a typical dataset for an Euclid observation. The images were simulated at the expected Euclid Wide Survey depths. To analyse the results, we created diagnostic plots and defined metrics to take into account the completeness of the provided catalogues, as well as the median biases, dispersions, and outlier fractions of their measured flux distributions. Abstract: We present a detailed chemical abundance analysis of the brightest star in the ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy candidate Cetus II from high-resolution Magellan/MIKE spectra. For this star, DES J011740.53-173053, abundances or upper limits of 18 elements from Carbon to Europium are derived. Its chemical abundances generally follow those of other UFD galaxy stars, with a slight enhancement of the alpha-elements (Mg, Si, and Ca) and low neutron-capture element (Sr, Ba, Eu) abundances supporting the classification of Cetus II as a likely UFD. The star exhibits lower Sc, Ti, and V abundances than Milky Way (MW) halo stars with similar metallicity. This signature is consistent with yields from a supernova (SN) originating from a star with a mass of ~11.2 solar masses. In addition, the star has a Potassium abundance of [K/Fe] = 0.81 which is somewhat higher than the K abundances of MW halo stars with similar metallicity, a signature which is also present in a number of UFD galaxies. A comparison including globular clusters (GC) and stellar stream stars suggests that high K is a specific characteristic for some UFD galaxy stars and can thus be used to help classify objects as UFD galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables, accepted to ApJ

50. CNN photometric redshifts in the SDSS at $r\leq 20$

Abstract: We release photometric redshifts, reaching $\sim$0.7, for $\sim$14M galaxies at $r\leq 20$ in the 11,500 deg$^2$ of the SDSS north and south galactic caps. These estimates were inferred from a convolution neural network (CNN) trained on $ugriz$ stamp images of galaxies labelled with a spectroscopic redshift from the SDSS, GAMA and BOSS surveys. Representative training sets of $\sim$370k galaxies were constructed from the much larger combined spectroscopic data to limit biases, particularly those arising from the over-representation of Luminous Red Galaxies. The CNN outputs a redshift classification that offers all the benefits of a well-behaved PDF, with a width efficiently signaling unreliable estimates due to poor photometry or stellar sources. The dispersion, mean bias and rate of catastrophic failures of the median point estimate are of order $\sigma_{\rm MAD}=0.014$, <$\Delta z_{\rm norm}$>$=0.0015$, $\eta(|\Delta z_{\rm norm}|>0.05)=4\%$ on a representative test sample at $r<19.8$, out-performing currently published estimates. The distributions in narrow intervals of magnitudes of the redshifts inferred for the photometric sample are in good agreement with the results of tomographic analyses. The inferred redshifts also match the photometric redshifts of the redMaPPer galaxy clusters for the probable cluster members.
