1. Sustainable aviation fuel from prehydrolysis liquors

Abstract: Maximizing products of high value and minimizing incineration of side-streams is key to realize future biorefineries. In current textile production from forestry, hemicellulose is removed by prehydrolysis before delignification. The resulting prehydrolysis liquor is incinerated in the recovery boiler at low efficiency. This additional burden on the limiting recovery boiler reduces the pulp production. In this study, we demonstrate that prehydrolysis liquor can be upgraded, in 5 steps, to yield aviation fuels. Prehydrolysis liquors were dehydrated to furfural by zeolite catalysis. Furfural was selectively reduced to furfuryl alcohol by Au@NC. Rhenium-catalysed Achmatowicz rearrangement gave a C5 intermediate susceptible to self [2 + 2] cycloaddition to give the C10 oxygenated precursor. By using a combination of Ru/C and zeolites, full hydrodeoxygenation was achieved. The overall transformation from furfural to hydrocarbons resulted in a 48% carbon yield. The resulting hydrocarbons, containing an anticipated strained four-membered ring, are preferred aviation fuel components. This is an important step to show that aviation fuels can be produced sustainably from existing industrial side-streams. A comparative life cycle assessment was applied to evaluate the environmental impact of the proposed valorization approach, demonstrating benefits in the climate change impact category when implementing this technology in a pulp mill compared to the incineration of pre-hydrolysis liquor scenario.

2. Valorization of low-value lignocellulosic side-streams

Abstract: The development of novel pathways for valorizing low-value streams from pulp, forest, and agricultural industries is crucial for realizing a circular bioeconomy and addressing the needs of both platform chemicals and fuels. Utilizing hemicellulose and lignin as biomass-derived feedstocks facilitates the production of sustainable liquid hydrocarbons, with catalytic hydrodeoxygenation being a key process. In the utilization of hemicellulose for the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons, the approach involves recovering hemicellulosic sugars from wood and transforming them into furfural, which undergoes catalytic hydrodeoxygenation using a noble metal/zeolite tandem catalyst. This results in the production of pentane as the primary product. The process also generates C7–C10 hydrocarbons through bimolecular condensation of oxygenated intermediates alongside the formation of aromatic structures. Another approach involves a three-step transformation of furfural, including furanic ring rearrangement and [2+2] cycloaddition, which produces a C10 oxygenated precursor with a 4-membered ring. Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of this precursor results in the formation of cyclobutane-containing hydrocarbons for sustainable aviation fuel applications. In the utilization of lignin for the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons, the approach involves lignin isolation from biomass and its direct catalytic hydrodeoxygenation into valuable platform chemicals and fuels. Guaiacol serves as a lignin model compound, facilitating optimization of the hydrotreatment process and giving insights into the distribution of the products. The hydrodeoxygenation of two different lignins, isolated from biomass by organosolv and soda pulping, yields bio-oils rich in hydrocarbons and suitable for transportation fuel applications.

Abstract: IMPORTANCE: The lack of robust neuroanatomical markers of psychosis risk has been traditionally attributed to heterogeneity. A complementary hypothesis is that variation in neuroanatomical measures in individuals at psychosis risk may be nested within the range observed in healthy individuals. OBJECTIVE: To quantify deviations from the normative range of neuroanatomical variation in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and evaluate their overlap with healthy variation and their association with positive symptoms, cognition, and conversion to a psychotic disorder. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study used clinical-, IQ-, and neuroimaging software (FreeSurfer)-derived regional measures of cortical thickness (CT), cortical surface area (SA), and subcortical volume (SV) from 1340 individuals with CHR-P and 1237 healthy individuals pooled from 29 international sites participating in the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics Through Meta-analysis (ENIGMA) Clinical High Risk for Psychosis Working Group. Healthy individuals and individuals with CHR-P were matched on age and sex within each recruitment site. Data were analyzed between September 1, 2021, and November 30, 2022. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: For each regional morphometric measure, deviation scores were computed as z scores indexing the degree of deviation from their normative means from a healthy reference population. Average deviation scores (ADS) were also calculated for regional CT, SA, and SV measures and globally across all measures. Regression analyses quantified the association of deviation scores with clinical severity and cognition, and 2-proportion z tests identified case-control differences in the proportion of individuals with infranormal (z < -1.96) or supranormal (z > 1.96) scores. Abstract: Machine learning approaches using structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) can be informative for disease classification, although their ability to predict psychosis is largely unknown. We created a model with individuals at CHR who developed psychosis later (CHR-PS+) from healthy controls (HCs) that can differentiate each other. We also evaluated whether we could distinguish CHR-PS+ individuals from those who did not develop psychosis later (CHR-PS-) and those with uncertain follow-up status (CHR-UNK). T1-weighted structural brain MRI scans from 1165 individuals at CHR (CHR-PS+, n = 144; CHR-PS-, n = 793; and CHR-UNK, n = 228), and 1029 HCs, were obtained from 21 sites. We used ComBat to harmonize measures of subcortical volume, cortical thickness and surface area data and corrected for non-linear effects of age and sex using a general additive model. CHR-PS+ (n = 120) and HC (n = 799) data from 20 sites served as a training dataset, which we used to build a classifier. The remaining samples were used external validation datasets to evaluate classifier performance (test, independent confirmatory, and independent group [CHR-PS- and CHR-UNK] datasets). The accuracy of the classifier on the training and independent confirmatory datasets was 85% and 73% respectively. Regional cortical surface area measures-including those from the right superior frontal, right superior temporal, and bilateral insular cortices strongly contributed to classifying CHR-PS+ from HC. CHR-PS- and CHR-UNK individuals were more likely to be classified as HC compared to CHR-PS+ (classification rate to HC: CHR-PS+, 30%; CHR-PS-, 73%; CHR-UNK, 80%). We used multisite sMRI to train a classifier to predict psychosis onset in CHR individuals, and it showed promise predicting CHR-PS+ in an independent sample. 7. First-principles simulations of exciton transfer between N-heterocyclic carbene iridium (III) complexes in blue organic light-emitting diodes

Abstract: N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) iridium (III) complexes are promising for the use as blue emitters in organic light-emitting diodes. Exciton transfer between such organometallic complexes is investigated using time-dependent density functional theory calculations. Casida's equation is solved to study absorption and emission of the neutral and charged complexes using the ORCA package. The Sternheimer equation implemented in the Octopus code is extended to take into account spin-orbit coupling and is applied to investigate triplet excitations. Real-time propagation as implemented in the Octopus code is used to simulate exciton dynamics in an emitter dimer and to extract the exciton coupling via explicit integration of transition densities.

8. Optical properties and exciton transfer between N-heterocyclic carbene iridium(III) complexes for blue light-emitting diode applications from first principles

Abstract: N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) iridium(III) complexes are considered as promising candidates for blue emitters in organic light-emitting diodes. They can play the roles of the emitter as well as of electron and hole transporters in the same emission layer. We investigate optical transitions in such complexes with account of geometry and electronic structure changes upon excitation or charging and exciton transfer between the complexes from first principles. It is shown that excitation of NHC iridium complexes is accompanied by a large reorganization energy ∼0.7 eV and a significant loss in the oscillator strength, which should lead to low exciton diffusion. Calculations with account of spin–orbit coupling reveal a small singlet–triplet splitting ∼0.1 eV, whereas the oscillator strength for triplet excitations is found to be an order of magnitude smaller than for the singlet ones. The contributions of the Förster and Dexter mechanisms are analyzed via the explicit integration of transition densities. It is shown that for typical distances between emitter complexes in the emission layer, the contribution of the Dexter mechanism should be negligible compared to the Förster mechanism. At the same time, the ideal dipole approximation, although giving the correct order of the exciton coupling, fails to reproduce the result taking into account spatial distribution of the transition density. For charged NHC complexes, we find a number of optical transitions close to the emission peak of the blue emitter with high exciton transfer rates that can be responsible for exciton–polaron quenching. The nature of these transitions is analyzed.

Abstract: Question Are brain morphometric changes that deviate significantly from healthy variation associated with the risk of psychosis? 11. Valorization of low-value lignocellulosic side-streams

Abstract: The development of novel pathways for valorizing low-value streams from pulp, forest, and agricultural industries is crucial for realizing a circular bioeconomy and addressing the needs of both platform chemicals and fuels. Utilizing hemicellulose and lignin as biomass-derived feedstocks facilitates the production of sustainable liquid hydrocarbons, with catalytic hydrodeoxygenation being a key process. In the utilization of hemicellulose for the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons, the approach involves recovering hemicellulosic sugars from wood and transforming them into furfural, which undergoes catalytic hydrodeoxygenation using a noble metal/zeolite tandem catalyst. This results in the production of pentane as the primary product. The process also generates C7–C10 hydrocarbons through bimolecular condensation of oxygenated intermediates alongside the formation of aromatic structures. Another approach involves a three-step transformation of furfural, including furanic ring rearrangement and [2+2] cycloaddition, which produces a C10 oxygenated precursor with a 4-membered ring. Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of this precursor results in the formation of cyclobutane-containing hydrocarbons for sustainable aviation fuel applications. In the utilization of lignin for the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons, the approach involves lignin isolation from biomass and its direct catalytic hydrodeoxygenation into valuable platform chemicals and fuels. Guaiacol serves as a lignin model compound, facilitating optimization of the hydrotreatment process and giving insights into the distribution of the products. The hydrodeoxygenation of two different lignins, isolated from biomass by organosolv and soda pulping, yields bio-oils rich in hydrocarbons and suitable for transportation fuel applications.

A third of raw materials from forestry & horbar;tops and branches (T & B)― are either left in the forests or collected and incinerated to a low value. Herein, we apply a fast fractionation to valorize two of the fractions of this forestry residue. The cellulose is converted to textile fibers and all the lignin to hydrocarbons. The environmental sustainability of the novel value chain was studied by life cycle assessment (LCA), and benefits were found in four out of five impact categories. These are important steps to increase fiber production without affecting environmental impact, making biorefining competitive.

13. Hydrocarbons from kraft pulp pre-hydrolysis liquors in two steps using heterogeneous catalysis

Abstract: Valorizing industrial side-streams that are burnt to a low value are important to make biorefining more sustainable. In this work, hemicellulose obtained as a pre-hydrolysis liquor from kraft pulping was converted to furfural in a 19 wt% yield based on hemicellulose content in raw biomass using a beta zeolite as a catalyst. Furfural was then directly hydro-processed to yield pentane and higher hydrocarbons in 60%. It was found that a combination of Pd/C and ZSM-5 gave full hydrodeoxygenation. 16. Sleep Mediates the Association Between Stress at Work and Incident Dementia : Study From the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

Abstract: Background: Both psychosocial stress at work and sleep disturbance may predispose impaired cognitive function and dementia in later life. However, whether sleep plays a mediating role for the link between stress at work and subsequent dementia has yet to be investigated. Methods: Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were used for the study. A cohort of 7 799 dementia-free individuals (aged 71.1 ± 0.2 years) were followed up for a median of 4.1 years for incident dementia. Job demand and control were estimated using questions derived from the Karasek’s Job Content Questionnaire. Sleep disturbance was ascertained by a question in the EURO-Depression scale. Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for age, sex, education, cognitive test score, and other potential covariates were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of dementia in relation to different job strain levels. Results: An interaction between job demand and sleep disturbance regarding the risk of dementia was detected. Data suggested a protective role of high-level job demand for dementia in individuals with sleep disturbance (HR [95% CI]: 0.69 [0.47, 1.00]) compared with low job demand. A 4-category job strain model based on the combination of job demand and job control levels suggested that among individuals with sleep disturbance, passive job (low demand, low control) was associated with a higher risk of dementia (1.54 [1.01, 2.34]), compared to active job (high demand, high control). Conclusion: The link between work-related stress and risk of dementia is limited to individuals suffering sleep disturbance.

Abstract: Item does not contain fulltext, Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, with MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small average case-control differences were observed for thickness asymmetries of the rostral anterior cingulate and the middle temporal gyrus, both driven by thinner left-hemispheric cortices in schizophrenia. Analyses of these asymmetries with respect to the use of antipsychotic medication and other clinical variables did not show any significant associations. Assessment of age- and sex-specific effects revealed a stronger average leftward asymmetry of pallidum volume between older cases and controls. Case-control differences in a multivariate context were assessed in a subset of the data (N = 2,029), which revealed that 7% of the variance across all structural asymmetries was explained by case-control status. Subtle case-control differences of brain macrostructural asymmetry may reflect differences at the molecular, cytoarchitectonic, or circuit levels that have functional relevance for the disorder. Reduced left middle temporal cortical thickness is consistent with altered left-hemisphere language network organization in schizophrenia.

18. Sleep Mediates the Association Between Stress at Work and Incident Dementia : Study From the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

Abstract: Background Both psychosocial stress at work and sleep disturbance may predispose impaired cognitive function and dementia in later life. However, whether sleep plays a mediating role for the link between stress at work and subsequent dementia has yet to be investigated. Methods Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were used for the study. A cohort of 7 799 dementia-free individuals (aged 71.1 +/- 0.2 years) were followed up for a median of 4.1 years for incident dementia. Job demand and control were estimated using questions derived from the Karasek's Job Content Questionnaire. Sleep disturbance was ascertained by a question in the EURO-Depression scale. Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for age, sex, education, cognitive test score, and other potential covariates were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of dementia in relation to different job strain levels. Results An interaction between job demand and sleep disturbance regarding the risk of dementia was detected. Data suggested a protective role of high-level job demand for dementia in individuals with sleep disturbance (HR [95% CI]: 0.69 [0.47, 1.00]) compared with low job demand. A 4-category job strain model based on the combination of job demand and job control levels suggested that among individuals with sleep disturbance, passive job (low demand, low control) was associated with a higher risk of dementia (1.54 [1.01, 2.34]), compared to active job (high demand, high control). Conclusion The link between work-related stress and risk of dementia is limited to individuals suffering sleep disturbance.

19. Single-Standard Quantification Strategy for Lignin Dimers by Supercritical Fluid Chromatography with Charged Aerosol Detection

Abstract: The increased interest in utilizing lignin as a feedstock to produce various aromatic compounds requires advanced chemical analysis methods to provide qualitative and quantitative characterization of lignin samples along different technology streamlines. However, due to the lack of commercially available chemical standards, routine quantification of industrially relevant lignin oligomers in complex lignin samples remains a challenge. This study presents a novel method for universal quantification of lignin dimers based on supercritical fluid chromatography with charged aerosol detection (CAD). A series of lignin-derived dimeric compounds that have been reported from reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) were synthesized and used as standards. The applicability of using linear regression instead of quadratic calibration curves was evaluated over a concentration range of 15–125 mg/L, demonstrating that the former calibration method is as appropriate as the latter. The response factors of lignin dimeric compounds were compared to assess the uniformity of the CAD signal, revealing that the CAD response for the tested lignin dimers did not differ substantially. It was also found that the response factors were not dependent on the number of methoxy groups or linkage motifs, ultimately enabling the use of only one calibrant for these compounds. The importance of chromatographic peak resolution in CAD was stressed, and the use of a digital peak sharpening technique was adopted and applied to address this challenge. The developed method was verified and used for the quantification of lignin dimers in an oil obtained by a RCF of birch sawdust.

Abstract: Schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with an increased risk of life-long cognitive impairments, age-related chronic disease, and premature mortality. We investigated evidence for advanced brain ageing in adult SZ patients, and whether this was associated with clinical characteristics in a prospective meta-analytic study conducted by the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group. The study included data from 26 cohorts worldwide, with a total of 2803 SZ patients (mean age 34.2 years; range 18-72 years; 67% male) and 2598 healthy controls (mean age 33.8 years, range 18-73 years, 55% male). Brain-predicted age was individually estimated using a model trained on independent data based on 68 measures of cortical thickness and surface area, 7 subcortical volumes, lateral ventricular volumes and total intracranial volume, all derived from T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Deviations from a healthy brain ageing trajectory were assessed by the difference between brain-predicted age and chronological age (brain-predicted age difference [brain-PAD]). On average, SZ patients showed a higher brain-PAD of +3.55 years (95% CI: 2.91, 4.19; I2 = 57.53%) compared to controls, after adjusting for age, sex and site (Cohen's d = 0.48). Among SZ patients, brain-PAD was not associated with specific clinical characteristics (age of onset, duration of illness, symptom severity, or antipsychotic use and dose). This large-scale collaborative study suggests advanced structural brain ageing in SZ. Longitudinal studies of SZ and a range of mental and somatic health outcomes will help to further evaluate the clinical implications of increased brain-PAD and its ability to be influenced by interventions.

Abstract: To achieve a viable forest-based biorefinery, both the carbohydrate and lignin parts of the raw material should be valorized. While lignin-first approaches have successfully been applied to hardwoods, where up to 50% of the lignin -close to the 'theoretical maximum yield'- has been transformed to valuable monophenols; limited studies have targeted softwoods. Softwood lignin comprises lower amount of beta-ether bonds and this results in lower theoretical and observed yields of monophenols in reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF): below 5 wt% yield of initial biomass has been reported. In this study, we use beetle infected spruce, a softwood, as raw material. A fast fractionation was developed to give a pulp and a lignin fraction in the absence of transition metal catalysts. The carbohydrate matrix was valorized to dissolving grade pulp in 37 wt% from biomass (86% yield), and suc-cessfully spun to Lyocell fibers. The lignin fraction was dissolved in furfural -operating as green 'solubility-enhancing-agent'- to blend lignin in inert carrier liquids to promote controlled hydrotreatment to yield biofuels in 10 wt% (60% carbon yield) from initial biomass. Life cycle assessment (LCA) of the value-chain showed improved sustainability in several footprint categories compared to cotton production. Thus, upgrading of a considered forestry waste to high value textile fibers and biofuels has been achieved: in case of lignin beyond the 'theoretical maximum yield'. This is an important step to mitigate a future growing demand of textiles without negatively affecting irrigation or land use.

Abstract: Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, with MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small average case-control differences were observed for thickness asymmetries of the rostral anterior cingulate and the middle temporal gyrus, both driven by thinner left-hemispheric cortices in schizophrenia. Analyses of these asymmetries with respect to the use of antipsychotic medication and other clinical variables did not show any significant associations. Assessment of age- and sex-specific effects revealed a stronger average leftward asymmetry of pallidum volume between older cases and controls. Case-control differences in a multivariate context were assessed in a subset of the data (N = 2,029), which revealed that 7% of the variance across all structural asymmetries was explained by case-control status. Subtle case-control differences of brain macrostructural asymmetry may reflect differences at the molecular, cytoarchitectonic, or circuit levels that have functional relevance for the disorder. Reduced left middle temporal cortical thickness is consistent with altered left-hemisphere language network organization in schizophrenia.

25. Sleep Mediates the Association Between Stress at Work and Incident Dementia : Study From the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

Abstract: Background Both psychosocial stress at work and sleep disturbance may predispose impaired cognitive function and dementia in later life. However, whether sleep plays a mediating role for the link between stress at work and subsequent dementia has yet to be investigated. Methods Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were used for the study. A cohort of 7 799 dementia-free individuals (aged 71.1 +/- 0.2 years) were followed up for a median of 4.1 years for incident dementia. Job demand and control were estimated using questions derived from the Karasek's Job Content Questionnaire. Sleep disturbance was ascertained by a question in the EURO-Depression scale. Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for age, sex, education, cognitive test score, and other potential covariates were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of dementia in relation to different job strain levels. Results An interaction between job demand and sleep disturbance regarding the risk of dementia was detected. Data suggested a protective role of high-level job demand for dementia in individuals with sleep disturbance (HR [95% CI]: 0.69 [0.47, 1.00]) compared with low job demand. A 4-category job strain model based on the combination of job demand and job control levels suggested that among individuals with sleep disturbance, passive job (low demand, low control) was associated with a higher risk of dementia (1.54 [1.01, 2.34]), compared to active job (high demand, high control). Conclusion The link between work-related stress and risk of dementia is limited to individuals suffering sleep disturbance.

Abstract: Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, with MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small average case-control differences were observed for thickness asymmetries of the rostral anterior cingulate and the middle temporal gyrus, both driven by thinner left-hemispheric cortices in schizophrenia. Analyses of these asymmetries with respect to the use of antipsychotic medication and other clinical variables did not show any significant associations. Assessment of age- and sex-specific effects revealed a stronger average leftward asymmetry of pallidum volume between older cases and controls. Case-control differences in a multivariate context were assessed in a subset of the data (N = 2,029), which revealed that 7% of the variance across all structural asymmetries was explained by case-control status. Subtle case-control differences of brain macrostructural asymmetry may reflect differences at the molecular, cytoarchitectonic, or circuit levels that have functional relevance for the disorder. Reduced left middle temporal cortical thickness is consistent with altered left-hemisphere language network organization in schizophrenia.

29. Sleep Mediates the Association Between Stress at Work and Incident Dementia : Study From the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

Abstract: Background Both psychosocial stress at work and sleep disturbance may predispose impaired cognitive function and dementia in later life. However, whether sleep plays a mediating role for the link between stress at work and subsequent dementia has yet to be investigated. Methods Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were used for the study. A cohort of 7 799 dementia-free individuals (aged 71.1 +/- 0.2 years) were followed up for a median of 4.1 years for incident dementia. Job demand and control were estimated using questions derived from the Karasek's Job Content Questionnaire. Sleep disturbance was ascertained by a question in the EURO-Depression scale. Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for age, sex, education, cognitive test score, and other potential covariates were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of dementia in relation to different job strain levels. Results An interaction between job demand and sleep disturbance regarding the risk of dementia was detected. Data suggested a protective role of high-level job demand for dementia in individuals with sleep disturbance (HR [95% CI]: 0.69 [0.47, 1.00]) compared with low job demand. A 4-category job strain model based on the combination of job demand and job control levels suggested that among individuals with sleep disturbance, passive job (low demand, low control) was associated with a higher risk of dementia (1.54 [1.01, 2.34]), compared to active job (high demand, high control). Conclusion The link between work-related stress and risk of dementia is limited to individuals suffering sleep disturbance.

Abstract: Schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with an increased risk of life-long cognitive impairments, age-related chronic disease, and premature mortality. We investigated evidence for advanced brain ageing in adult SZ patients, and whether this was associated with clinical characteristics in a prospective meta-analytic study conducted by the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group. The study included data from 26 cohorts worldwide, with a total of 2803 SZ patients (mean age 34.2 years; range 18-72 years; 67% male) and 2598 healthy controls (mean age 33.8 years, range 18-73 years, 55% male). Brain-predicted age was individually estimated using a model trained on independent data based on 68 measures of cortical thickness and surface area, 7 subcortical volumes, lateral ventricular volumes and total intracranial volume, all derived from T1-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Deviations from a healthy brain ageing trajectory were assessed by the difference between brain-predicted age and chronological age (brain-predicted age difference [brain-PAD]). On average, SZ patients showed a higher brain-PAD of +3.55 years (95% CI: 2.91, 4.19; I2 = 57.53%) compared to controls, after adjusting for age, sex and site (Cohen's d = 0.48). Among SZ patients, brain-PAD was not associated with specific clinical characteristics (age of onset, duration of illness, symptom severity, or antipsychotic use and dose). This large-scale collaborative study suggests advanced structural brain ageing in SZ. Longitudinal studies of SZ and a range of mental and somatic health outcomes will help to further evaluate the clinical implications of increased brain-PAD and its ability to be influenced by interventions.

Abstract: Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, with MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small average case-control differences were observed for thickness asymmetries of the rostral anterior cingulate and the middle temporal gyrus, both driven by thinner left-hemispheric cortices in schizophrenia. Analyses of these asymmetries with respect to the use of antipsychotic medication and other clinical variables did not show any significant associations. Assessment of age- and sex-specific effects revealed a stronger average leftward asymmetry of pallidum volume between older cases and controls. Case-control differences in a multivariate context were assessed in a subset of the data (N = 2,029), which revealed that 7% of the variance across all structural asymmetries was explained by case-control status. Subtle case-control differences of brain macrostructural asymmetry may reflect differences at the molecular, cytoarchitectonic, or circuit levels that have functional relevance for the disorder. Reduced left middle temporal cortical thickness is consistent with altered left-hemisphere language network organization in schizophrenia.

32. Sleep Mediates the Association Between Stress at Work and Incident Dementia : Study From the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

Abstract: Background Both psychosocial stress at work and sleep disturbance may predispose impaired cognitive function and dementia in later life. However, whether sleep plays a mediating role for the link between stress at work and subsequent dementia has yet to be investigated. Methods Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were used for the study. A cohort of 7 799 dementia-free individuals (aged 71.1 +/- 0.2 years) were followed up for a median of 4.1 years for incident dementia. Job demand and control were estimated using questions derived from the Karasek's Job Content Questionnaire. Sleep disturbance was ascertained by a question in the EURO-Depression scale. Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for age, sex, education, cognitive test score, and other potential covariates were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of dementia in relation to different job strain levels. Results An interaction between job demand and sleep disturbance regarding the risk of dementia was detected. Data suggested a protective role of high-level job demand for dementia in individuals with sleep disturbance (HR [95% CI]: 0.69 [0.47, 1.00]) compared with low job demand. A 4-category job strain model based on the combination of job demand and job control levels suggested that among individuals with sleep disturbance, passive job (low demand, low control) was associated with a higher risk of dementia (1.54 [1.01, 2.34]), compared to active job (high demand, high control). Conclusion The link between work-related stress and risk of dementia is limited to individuals suffering sleep disturbance.

33. Characteristics and recent dynamics of thermo-erosional features in small catchments of Arctic Siberia

Abstract: Thermal erosion is a prominent type of permafrost degradation that can lead to rapid changes in ice-rich permafrost landscapes. The process and its resulting landforms such as thermo-erosional gullies are reported to become increasingly active and widespread. (Re-)Activation of thermal erosion impacts the hydrological regime of affected landscapes and alters the biogeochemical composition of associated surface waters. Our study aims at assessing current rates and mechanisms of thermal erosion in small ice-rich permafrost catchments of Arctic Siberia. We investigated thermoerosional features in three different areas in and around the Lena River Delta that represent differing geomorphological, lithological and geocryological settings. We used a combination of field measurements, remote sensing methods including tacheometry, DGPS, and UAV surveys and subsequent GIS analyses to 1) quantify the morphometry of thermo-erosional landforms, 2) quantify the spatial extent of current thermo-erosional activity, and 3) quantify areal changes in activation and stabilization of thermal erosion over recent years to decades. Further data on snow depth and distribution in the gullies and valleys as well as hydrological and hydrochemical data of the associated streams aided the interpretation of observed spatial differences in thermal erosion rates and the development of active versus stabilized zones as well as their impacts on headwaters.

34. Survivors from a pliocene climatic catastrophe:Gyrodactylus (Platyhelminthes, Monogenea) parasites of the relict fishes in the Central Asian Internal drainage basin of Mongolia

Abstract: We investigated the Gyrodactylus ectoparasites on relict fishes in the isolated endorheic Central Asian Internal drainage basin in Mongolia (The Hollow) and placed them into the global phylogenetic framework based on internal transcribed spacer regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS). Much of the rich Pliocene lacustrine ichthyofauna is extinct. We sampled five riverine survivors: Altai osmans Oreoleuciscus humilis and O. potanini (Leuciscidae), Mongolian grayling Thymallus brevirostris (Salmonidae), and stone loaches Barbatula conilobus and B. cobdonensis (Nemacheilidae). We found eight species of the subgenus Gyrodactylus (Limnonephrotus) and four of G. (Gyrodactylus). Nine species were identified as taxa described earlier, and three were described as new. The endemic Mongolian grayling carried four species, only one of wageneri group typical to salmonids (Gyrodactylus radimi sp. nov.), two of nemachili group (G. zavkhanensis sp. nov., G. pseudonemachili Ergens and Bychowsky, 1967), and G. amurensis Akhmerov, 1952 of subgenus G. (Gyrodactylus). G. pseudonemachili was also found on osman and loach. A parasite clade typical for Nemacheilidae was overrepresented by five species (G. tayshirensis sp. nov. on Barbatula conilobus, G. mongolicus Ergens and Dulmaa, 1970, G. nemachili Bychowsky, 1936). Relaxed host specificity mentioned already by Ergens and Dulmaa was evident. In the updated global ITS phylogenies of the two freshwater-restricted subgenera, the parasites from the Mongolian relict populations assumed positions concordant with a hypothesis of multiple ancient introductions from the Euro-Siberian fauna, strong rarefaction and three cases of endemic divergence.

A third of raw materials from forestry & horbar;tops and branches (T & B)― are either left in the forests or collected and incinerated to a low value. Herein, we apply a fast fractionation to valorize two of the fractions of this forestry residue. The cellulose is converted to textile fibers and all the lignin to hydrocarbons. The environmental sustainability of the novel value chain was studied by life cycle assessment (LCA), and benefits were found in four out of five impact categories. These are important steps to increase fiber production without affecting environmental impact, making biorefining competitive.

38. Diagnosis of Migrainous Infarction:A Case Report and Analysis of Previously Published Cases

Abstract: Migrainous infarction (MI) is a rare disorder. The precise diagnostic criteria for this diagnosis have been available in the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD) since 1988, but many cases do not fulfil these criteria. This paper describes a good example of MI and analyzes previously published case reports. We report a very special case of MI in an 18-year-old woman who had a recurrent episode of migraine with a similar aura with numbness of the right arm and speech disturbances which had an unusually long duration (>120 min). On admission to the headache centre “Europe-Asia”, she complained of slowness of speech and problems with choice of words. An MRI showed acute lacunar infarcts in the left parietal subcortical area. Ischemic infarcts were localized in a relevant area on the left side and the aura symptoms were right-sided. The patient, therefore, fulfilled the ICHD-3 diagnostic criteria for “Migrainous infarction”. An analysis of 35 previously published articles with case reports about MI showed that 22 did not meet the diagnostic criteria of the ICHD for migrainous infarction. Using all this, we developed diagnostic recommendations for migrainous infarction which can help to improve the quality of diagnosis when used together with the diagnostic criteria of the ICHD for migrainous infarction.

Assessment of age- and sex-specific effects revealed a stronger average leftward asymmetry of pallidum volume between older cases and controls. Case-control differences in a multivariate context were assessed in a subset of the data (N = 2,029), which revealed that 7% of the variance across all structural asymmetries was explained by case-control status. Subtle case-control differences of brain macrostructural asymmetry may reflect differences at the molecular, cytoarchitectonic, or circuit levels that have functional relevance for the disorder. Reduced left middle temporal cortical thickness is consistent with altered left-hemisphere language network organization in schizophrenia.

Abstract: The breakup of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea 56 million years ago was associated with massive basaltic magmatism and a short-lived global warming episode, the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). Scientific drilling in 2021 targeted sediments and volcanic rocks on the mid-Norwegian margin to test hypotheses related to the formation of large igneous provinces as well as global warming associated potentially with the igneous activity. High-resolution 3D site survey data facilitated optimal borehole locations during the drilling; key reflections were targeted using the high-resolution 3D data, and PETM stratigraphic intervals were recognized during shipboard core descriptions. Igneous seismic geomorphological interpretation, furthermore, reveals distinct volcanic morphologies on the marginal high, related to different volcanic emplacement environments.

Abstract: Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, with MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small average case-control differences were observed for thickness asymmetries of the rostral anterior cingulate and the middle temporal gyrus, both driven by thinner left-hemispheric cortices in schizophrenia. Analyses of these asymmetries with respect to the use of antipsychotic medication and other clinical variables did not show any significant associations. 42. Sleep Mediates the Association Between Stress at Work and Incident Dementia : Study From the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

Abstract: Background Both psychosocial stress at work and sleep disturbance may predispose impaired cognitive function and dementia in later life. However, whether sleep plays a mediating role for the link between stress at work and subsequent dementia has yet to be investigated. Methods Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were used for the study. A cohort of 7 799 dementia-free individuals (aged 71.1 +/- 0.2 years) were followed up for a median of 4.1 years for incident dementia. Job demand and control were estimated using questions derived from the Karasek's Job Content Questionnaire. Sleep disturbance was ascertained by a question in the EURO-Depression scale. Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for age, sex, education, cognitive test score, and other potential covariates were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of dementia in relation to different job strain levels. Results An interaction between job demand and sleep disturbance regarding the risk of dementia was detected. Data suggested a protective role of high-level job demand for dementia in individuals with sleep disturbance (HR [95% CI]: 0.69 [0.47, 1.00]) compared with low job demand. A 4-category job strain model based on the combination of job demand and job control levels suggested that among individuals with sleep disturbance, passive job (low demand, low control) was associated with a higher risk of dementia (1.54 [1.01, 2.34]), compared to active job (high demand, high control). Conclusion The link between work-related stress and risk of dementia is limited to individuals suffering sleep disturbance.

Abstract: We present a code modularization approach to design efficient and massively parallel cubic and linear-scaling solvers for electronic structure calculations using atomic orbitals. The modular implementation of the orbital minimization method, in which linear algebra and parallelization issues are handled via external libraries, is demonstrated in the SIESTA code. The DBCSR and ScaLAPACK libraries are used for algebraic operations with sparse and dense matrices, respectively. The MatrixSwitch and libOMM libraries, recently developed within the Electronic Structure Library, facilitate switching between different matrix formats and implement the energy minimization. We show results comparing the performance of several cubic-scaling algorithms, and also demonstrate the parallel performance of the linear-scaling solvers, and their supremacy over the cubic-scaling solvers for insulating systems with sizes of several hundreds of atoms.

Abstract: Affect is involved in many psychological phenomena, but a descriptive structure, long sought, has been elusive. Valence and arousal are fundamental, and a key question-the focus of the present study-is the relationship between them. Valence is sometimes thought to be independent of arousal, but, in some studies (representing too few societies in the world) arousal was found to vary with valence. One common finding is that arousal is lowest at neutral valence and increases with both positive and negative valence: a symmetric V-shaped relationship. In the study reported here of self-reported affect during a remembered moment ( N = 8,590), we tested the valence-arousal relationship in 33 societies with 25 different languages. The two most common hypotheses in the literature-independence and a symmetric V-shaped relationship-were not supported. With data of all samples pooled, arousal increased with positive but not negative valence. Valence accounted for between 5% (Finland) and 43% (China Beijing) of the variance in arousal. Although there is evidence for a structural relationship between the two, there is also a large amount of variability in this relation.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze the legal regulation of the media in Western countries. The study is based on universal scientific methods, such as observation, deduction, analysis, comparative and historical historical analysis of different legislatures and the practices of their implementation. The countries chosen for the analysis are the so-called "old Europe" countries. The study concludes that the legal regulation of the media is a complex issue that must be addressed with a holistic approach. The law is important, but it is not enough to guarantee freedom of expression and information pluralism. There is also a need for effective law enforcement and media monitoring systems.

Abstract: Left-right asymmetry is an important organizing feature of the healthy brain that may be altered in schizophrenia, but most studies have used relatively small samples and heterogeneous approaches, resulting in equivocal findings. We carried out the largest case-control study of structural brain asymmetries in schizophrenia, using MRI data from 5,080 affected individuals and 6,015 controls across 46 datasets in the ENIGMA consortium, using a single image analysis protocol. Asymmetry indexes were calculated for global and regional cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume measures. Differences of asymmetry were calculated between affected individuals and controls per dataset, and effect sizes were meta-analyzed across datasets. Small average case-control differences were observed for thickness asymmetries of the rostral anterior cingulate and the middle temporal gyrus, both driven by thinner left-hemispheric cortices in schizophrenia. Analyses of these asymmetries with respect to the use of antipsychotic medication and other clinical variables did not show any significant associations. Assessment of age- and sex-specific effects revealed a stronger average leftward asymmetry of pallidum volume between older cases and controls. Case-control differences in a multivariate context were assessed in a subset of the data (N = 2,029), which revealed that 7% of the variance across all structural asymmetries was explained by case-control status. Subtle case-control differences of brain macro-structural asymmetry may reflect differences at the molecular, cytoarchitectonic or circuit levels that have functional relevance for the disorder. Reduced left middle temporal cortical thickness is consistent with altered left-hemisphere language network organization in schizophrenia.

47. Proposed general diagnostic criteria for secondary headaches

Abstract: Background: The distinction between a pre-existing primary headache and a secondary headache at the onset of a disorder is important and has not been taken into account in the International Classification of Headache Disorders-3. This study aimed to improve the general diagnostic criteria for secondary headaches using results of our previous studies. Materials and methods: We analyzed characteristics of headaches including their changes in intensity, duration, frequency, localization and side, development of new accompanying symptoms, and therapeutic response at the onset of transient ischemic attacks (TIA) (n = 120, mean age 56.1, 55% females) and ischemic stroke (n = 550, mean age 63.1, 56% females) compared to the control group (n = 192, mean age 58.7, 64% females). Results: Headache of a new type occurred in 8.4% of ischemic stroke patients and 5% of TIA patients on the day of admission but did not occur at all in the control group. Pre-existing headache with a change of at least one characteristic occurred significantly more often in stroke (5.4%) and TIA (7.5%) than in the control group (1%) (p = 0.01 and p = 0.003 respectively). Conclusion: The presence of a new type of headache and a pre-existing headache with altered characteristics in close temporal relation to a disorder indicates causality. Based on these data we propose revised general diagnostic criteria for secondary headaches.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze the legal regulation of the media in Western countries. The study is based on universal scientific methods, such as observation, deduction, analysis, comparative and historical historical analysis of different legislatures and the practices of their implementation. The countries chosen for the analysis are the so-called "old Europe" countries. The study concludes that the legal regulation of the media is a complex issue that must be addressed with a holistic approach. The law is important, but it is not enough to guarantee freedom of expression and information pluralism. There is also a need for effective law enforcement and media monitoring systems.

49. Diagnosis of Migrainous Infarction:A Case Report and Analysis of Previously Published Cases

Abstract: Migrainous infarction (MI) is a rare disorder. The precise diagnostic criteria for this diagnosis have been available in the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD) since 1988, but many cases do not fulfil these criteria. This paper describes a good example of MI and analyzes previously published case reports. We report a very special case of MI in an 18-year-old woman who had a recurrent episode of migraine with a similar aura with numbness of the right arm and speech disturbances which had an unusually long duration (>120 min). On admission to the headache centre “Europe-Asia”, she complained of slowness of speech and problems with choice of words. An MRI showed acute lacunar infarcts in the left parietal subcortical area. Ischemic infarcts were localized in a relevant area on the left side and the aura symptoms were right-sided. The patient, therefore, fulfilled the ICHD-3 diagnostic criteria for “Migrainous infarction”. An analysis of 35 previously published articles with case reports about MI showed that 22 did not meet the diagnostic criteria of the ICHD for migrainous infarction. Using all this, we developed diagnostic recommendations for migrainous infarction which can help to improve the quality of diagnosis when used together with the diagnostic criteria of the ICHD for migrainous infarction.
