The present study examines two classes of behavior in probands with the 16p11.2 duplication and deletion: repetitive behavior and psychosis spectrum behavior. It was hypothesized that 1.) deletion and duplication cases will differ significantly in the means and profiles of repetitive behaviors across five subscales and 2.)16p11.2 duplication cases will exhibit more schizotypal traits than the deletion cases. Data on 94 total participants was obtained from the Simmons Variation Individuals Project. Three scales were used to measure behavior: the Childhood Routines Inventory-Revised, the Childhood Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences, and the Child Behavior Checklist. Data analysis was conducted using 2x3 Mixed ANOVAs and Linear Regressions. Results from these tests showed strong evidence that deletion and duplication of 16p11.2 yield differing neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions. Duplication cases were more symptomatic in both repetitive behavior and psychosis spectrum behavior. Overall, the study found that copy number variation in the 16p11.2 region presents a risk for a variety of psychiatric symptoms in children and shows the importance of dimensional approaches in understanding the behavioral phenotypes of genetic syndromes.

PURPOSE Bilateral extended pelvic lymph node dissection at the time of radical prostatectomy is the current standard of care if pelvic lymph node dissection is indicated; often, however, pelvic lymph node dissection is performed in pN0 disease. With the more accurate staging achieved with magnetic resonance imaging-targeted biopsies for prostate cancer diagnosis, the indication for bilateral extended pelvic lymph node dissection may be revised. We aimed to assess the feasibility of unilateral extended pelvic lymph node dissection in the era of modern prostate cancer imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed a multi-institutional data set of men with cN0 disease diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging-targeted biopsy who underwent prostatectomy and bilateral extended pelvic lymph node dissection. The outcome of the study was lymph node invasion contralateral to the prostatic lobe with worse disease features, ie, dominant lobe. Logistic regression to predict lymph node invasion contralateral to the dominant lobe was generated and internally validated. RESULTS Overall, data from 2,253 patients were considered. Lymph node invasion was documented in 302 (13%) patients; 83 (4%) patients had lymph node invasion contralateral to the dominant prostatic lobe. A model including prostate-specific antigen, maximum diameter of the index lesion, seminal vesicle invasion on magnetic resonance imaging, International Society of Urological Pathology grade in the nondominant side, and percentage of positive cores in the nondominant side achieved an area under the curve of 84% after internal validation. With a cutoff of contralateral lymph node invasion of 1%, 602 (27%) contralateral pelvic lymph node dissections would be omitted with only 1 (1.2%) lymph node invasion missed. CONCLUSIONS Pelvic lymph node dissection could be omitted contralateral to the prostate lobe with worse disease features in selected patients. PCa screening is based on the measurements of the serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) to select men with higher risks for tumors and, thus, eligible for prostate biopsy. However, PSA testing has a low specificity, leading to unnecessary biopsies in 50–75% of cases. Therefore, more specific screening opportunities are needed to reduce the number of biopsies performed on healthy men and patients with indolent tumors. Urine samples from 45 patients with elevated PSA were collected prior to prostate biopsy, a mass spectrometry (MS) screening was performed to identify novel biomarkers and the best candidates were validated by ELISA. The urine quantification of PEDF, HPX, CD99, CANX, FCER2, HRNR, and KRT13 showed superior performance compared to PSA. Additionally, the combination of two biomarkers and patient age resulted in an AUC of 0.8196 (PSA = 0.6020) and 0.7801 (PSA = 0.5690) in detecting healthy men and high-grade PCa, respectively. In this study, we identified and validated novel urine biomarkers for the screening of PCa, showing that an upfront urine test, based on quantitative biomarkers and patient age, is a feasible method to reduce the number of unnecessary prostate biopsies and detect both healthy men and clinically significant PCa.

Inhibitory interneurons expressing parvalbumin (PV) are central to cortical network dynamics, generation of c oscillations, and cognition. Dysfunction of PV interneurons disrupts cortical information processing and cognitive behavior. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tyrosine receptor kinase B (trkB) signaling regulates the maturation of cortical PV interneurons but is also implicated in their adult multidimensional functions. Using a novel viral strategy for cell-type-specific and spatially restricted expression of a dominant-negative trkB (trkB.DN), we show that BDNF/trkB signaling is essential to the integrity and maintenance of prefrontal PV interneurons in adult male and female mice. Reduced BDNF/trkB signaling in PV interneurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) resulted in deficient PV inhibition and increased baseline local field potential (LFP) activity in a broad frequency band. The altered network activity was particularly pronounced during increased activation of the prefrontal network and was associated with changed dynamics of local excitatory neurons, as well as decreased modulation of the LFP, abnormalities that appeared to generalize across stimuli and brain states. In addition, our findings link reduced BDNF/trkB signaling in prefrontal PV interneurons to increased aggression. Together our investigations demonstrate that BDNF/trkB signaling in PV interneurons in the adult mPFC is essential to local network dynamics and cognitive behavior. Our data provide direct support for the suggested association between decreased trkB signaling, deficient PV inhibition, and altered prefrontal circuitry.

Focal therapy is a modern alternative to selectively treat a specific part of the prostate harboring clinically significant disease while preserving the rest of the gland. The aim of this therapeutic approach is to retain the oncological benefit of active treatment and to minimize the side-effects of common radical treatments. The oncological effectiveness of focal therapy is yet to be proven in long-term robust trials. In contrast, the toxicity profile is well-established in randomized controlled trials and multiple robust prospective cohort studies. This narrative review summarizes the relevant evidence on complications and their management after focal therapy. When compared to whole gland treatments, focal therapy provides a substantial benefit in terms of adverse events reduction and preservation of genito-urinary function. The most common complications occur in the peri-operative period. Urinary tract infection and acute urinary retention can occur in up to 17% of patients, while dysuria and haematuria are more common. Urinary incontinence following focal therapy is very rare (0–5%), and the vast majority of patients recover in few weeks. Erectile dysfunction can occur after focal therapy in 0–46%: the baseline function and the ablation template are the most important factors predicting post-operative erectile dysfunction. Focal therapy in the salvage setting after external beam radiotherapy has a significantly higher rate of complications. Up to one man in 10 will present a severe complication.

BACKGROUND: There is a successful outcome after surgical management of spinal arachnoid diverticula (SAD) in up to 82% of cases. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that Pugs have favorable short-term and poor long-term prognosis after surgical treatment of thoracolumbar SAD. The aim of the present investigation was to describe clinical findings, short- and long-term outcomes, and follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in Pugs with thoracolumbar SAD. ANIMALS: Twenty-five client owned Pugs with 12-month follow-up information after surgical treatment of thoracolumbar SAD. METHODS: Multicenter retrospective case series. All medical records were searched for Pugs diagnosed with SAD. Data regarding signalment, history, surgical procedure, outcome, histopathology, and follow-up MRI results were extracted. RESULTS: Mean age at presentation was 7.32 (range 2-11) years, 80% were males. Short-term outcome was available in 25 dogs, and improvement was confirmed in 80% of dogs. Long-term outcome was available in 21 dogs, and deterioration was confirmed in 86% of cases, with late-onset recurrence of clinical signs after initial postsurgical improvement affecting 85% of Pugs. A moderate correlation (r = 0.50) was found between duration of clinical signs and outcome. In 8 dogs with deteriorating clinical signs, follow-up MRI revealed regrowth of the SAD in 2 cases, new SAD formation in 2 cases, and intramedullary T2W hyperintensity/syringomyelia in 6 cases. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: This study suggests that Pugs with thoracolumbar SAD do not have a favorable long-term prognosis after surgical treatment for reasons yet to be determined.

The research demonstrated that the ERP system integrated with mobile technology allowed the reduction of costs in the storage process, as well as the agility in the storage operations, with the optimization of the flow of activities, simplification and speed in the process of supplying materials, one of the recommendations of the research, it is suggested, the assessment of use of RFID in the logistics operations along with the ERP system and mobile technology.

The crash risk associated with cell phone use while driving is a contentious issue. Many states are introducing Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) that may be accessed with cell phones while driving (e.g., 511 Traveler Information Services). In these contexts, there is a need for relevant research to determine the risk of cell phone use. This study compared driver performance while conversing on a hands-free cell phone to conditions of operating common in-vehicle controls (e.g., radio, fan, air conditioning) and alcohol intoxication (BAC 0.08). In addition, the study examined the combined effects of being distracted and being intoxicated given that there may be a higher risk of a crash if the driver engages in a combination of risk factors. During simulated traffic scenarios, resource allocation was assessed through an eventrelated potential (ERP) novelty oddball paradigm. Intoxicated drivers were less attentive to all stimuli and drivers engaged in secondary tasks had weaker responses to unexpected novel sounds in brain regions associated with evaluative processing. Drivers conversing on the cell phone and in-vehicle tasks while sober had lower accuracy during the target tone task than intoxicated drivers not completing any secondary task.

An approach to teaching the writing of poetry is presented in this brief article. AUTHOR'S COMMENT (excerpt): A poet's purpose is to amuse, to instruct, to embellish truth, or to vitalize dull reality. Poets compress, using the minimum number of words to gain the maximum effect, yoking seemingly disparate ideas into metaphors, creating poetic shock, leading the reader to expect one idea and then offering another. THE APPROACH (excerpt): One approach I have employed successfully in making students aware of these qualities of the poet is called "Astro Poetry." Students clip the "Astrological Forecast" from the newspaper and bring it to class. We discuss the four types of meaning in a poem: Sense, Feeling, Tone, and Intention. Students read their forecast to get the literal "sense" of the message. They then translate the "sense" into poetic form. To do this, they must capture the "intention" of the original message and transform it into the aim of their poem. They must establish the "feeling" of their poem--serious, humorous, ironic, satiric, didactic. The strings of consecutive words must be coherent, precise and unified, and must be so shaped that they look like a poem--a special arrangement of words on paper. (KC)

Research objective. The study was aimed to establish development and distribution patterns of cabbage stem weevil (Ceutorhynchus pallidactylus), cabbage seed weevil (C. obstrictus) and Brassica pod midge (Dasineura brassicae) in winter and spring oilseed rape crops, to estimate insect damage, to compare the efficacy of insecticides of different mode of action and to determine the optimal timing of insecticide application. Research tasks. 1. To determine species abundance and diversity of Ceutorhynchus spp. infesting oilseed rape crops. 2. To study cabbage stem weevil’s (C. pallidactylus) biology (migration activity of adult insects, embryonic and post-embryonic development) in winter and spring oilseed rape crops and to estimate insect injury. 3. To establish the patterns of distribution of adults of cabbage seed weevil (C. obstrictus) as well as those of embryonic and post-embryonic development in winter and spring oilseed rape crops and to estimate insect injury. 4. According to historical data, the glacial relict higher crustaceans, Mysis relicta and Pallaseopsis quadrispinosa, as well as a plankton crustacean Limnocalanus macrurus had earlier been recorded in Lake Drüksiai. Our data and investigations of other authors evidence that these crustaceans no longer inhabit the lake. What are the prospects for the recovery of these crustaceans after restoring the natural thermal regime in Lake Drüksiai? One of the possibilities is to reintroduce these species after restoring the natural thermal regime in the lake and improving dissolved oxygen level in the hypolimnion, which would provide conditions for long-term survival and recovery of populations of these crustaceans. As reintroduction of relict species is rather costly, it is necessary to assess effectiveness of such works.

There are over five thousand crane fly species belonging to the family Tipulidae currently described. Subgenus Vestiplex is phylogenetically young cranefly complex of the genus Tipula. Some of the species are poorly morphologically known and require a correction of their placement inside subgenus Vestiplex. The aim of this dissertation was to accomplish taxonomic and phylogenetic review of the subgenus Vestiplex Bezzi, 1924. The following tasks were formulated in order to achieve the aim: to investigate as many as possible type specimens and specimens of different species, illustrating the genital structures important for the species identification; compile a list of characters for the phylogenetic analysis and perform the analysis itself; to divide the species of the subgenus Vestiplex in species groups. Phylogenetic analysis of 103 species of the subgenus Vestiplex was performed for the first time. Classification of the subgenus based on the analysis of morphological features is presented. One species new for science was described. The catalogue of genital structures is presented., Šiuo metu aprašyta virš 5 tūkstančių rūšių priklausančių šeimai Tipulidae. Pogentė Vestiplex – tai geologiškai jauna specializuota genties Tipula ilgakojų uodų grupė. Dalis rūšių būdama morfologiškai mažai išnagrinėta reikalauja giminystės ryšių patikslinimo pogentės Vestiplex viduje. Disertacinio darbo tikslas - taksonominė filogenetinė pogentės Vestiplex Bezzi, 1924 analizė. Tikslui pasiekti buvo iškelti šie uždaviniai: ištirti kuo didesnio rūšių skaičiaus tipinę medžiagą, pateikti svarbias identifikacijai genitalinių struktūrų iliustracijas; aprašyti filogenetiškai svarbius požymius bei atlikti filogenetinę analizę; suskirstyti pogentės Vestiplex rūšis į kompleksus. Pirmą kartą, remiantis morfologiniais požymiais, atlikta pogentės Vestiplex filogenetinė analizė, kurios metu išnagrinėtos 103 rūšys. Remiantis gautais rezultatais pateikiama pogentės Vestilex klasifikacija. Atrasta ir aprašyta nauja mokslui ilgakojų uodų rūšis. Parengtas ištirtos genitalinių struktūrų iliustracijų katalogas.

Since spiders are close to the top of nutrition pyramid of mesofauna, they are more sensitive to changes of habitats and anthropogenic impact than most the other groups of invertebrates. It shows that the investigation of peat bog spider communities is certainly a relevant goal. The aim of the study was to perform a taxonomic and zoogeographic analysis of Lithuanian epigeic spider communities, to estimate the diversity of their structure and to assess the main peculiarities of seasonal dynamics. The following tasks were set to achieve this aim: to compile a checklist of Lithuanian epigeic spider species living in peat bogs, to investigate vertical distribution of spiders in Sphagnum tussocks of peat bogs, to perform a taxonomic and zoogeographic analysis of epigeic spider fauna of Lithuanian peat bogs, to describe and analyze the diversity of spider communities and their structure in Lithuanian peat bogs, to study and compare dominant complexes in different peat bog spider communities, to investigate the composition of spider species and relationships between epigeic spider communities and surrounding habitats, to evaluate and analyze seasonal dynamics of epigeic spider communities in Lithuanian peat bogs. Darbo tikslas – atlikti taksonominę ir zoogeografinę Lietuvos aukštapelkių epigėjinių vorų faunos analizę, nustatyti bendrijų struktūros įvairovę ir išaiškinti pagrindinius sezoninės dinamikos ypatumus. Darbo tikslui pasiekti buvo iškelti šie uždaviniai: sudaryti Lietuvos aukštapelkių epigėjinių vorų rūšių sistematinį sąraš, ištirti vertikalų vorų pasiskirstymą skirtingame aukštapelkės kiminų gylyje, atlikti Lietuvos aukštapelkių epigėjinių vorų faunos taksonominę ir zoogeografinę analizę, aprašyti ir išanalizuoti epigėjinių vorų bendrijų įvairovę ir struktūrą Lietuvos aukštapelkėse, nustatyti ir palyginti vorų bendrijų dominantinius kompleksus skirtingose aukštapelkių vorų bendrijose, ištirti vorų rūšinę sudėtį ir panašumą aukštapelkėje ir gretimose buveinėse, nustatyti ir išanalizuoti epigėjinių vorų bendrijų sezoninę dinamiką Lietuvos aukštapelkėse. Darbe pateikiama apibendrinta informacija apie Lietuvos aukštapelkėse gyvenančių vorų rūšis, dominantus, geografinį rūšių paplitimą ir sezoninę vorų bendrijų dinamiką. The aim of this study was to investigate biology, taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of the aphid genus Cryptomyzus distributed in Lithuania. The state of knowledge about the representatives of this genus in the world and in Lithuania is discussed and methods used in faunal, life cycle, morphometric, cytogenetic, molecular and phylologenetic studies are described in the dissertation. Results of the study presented in this work were obtained by analyzing collection stored at the Department of Zoology (Faculty of Natural Sciences, Vilnius University) and field material collected by the author and by investigating life cycles of seven aphid species of the genus Cryptomyzus (C. alboapicalis, C. galeopsidis, C. korschelti, C. leonuri, C. maudamanti, C. ribis ir C. ulmeri) in Lithuania. Aphids with known peculiarities of biology were used for morphometric, cytogenetic and molecular studies. Performed phylogenetic analysis showed that phylogenetic reconstructions based both on partial DNA sequences of two genes and morphological and biological characters did not contradict with each other. Identification keys to apterous and alate viviparous females, oviparae and males are given in the dissertation together with measurements of various morphs belonging to seven studied species. Amarai su žinomomis biologijos ypatybėmis panaudoti morfometriniams, citogenetiniams ir molekuliniams tyrimams. Atlikta filogenetinė analizė parodė, kad filogenijos schemos, sudarytos tiek dviejų genų dalinių DNR sekų, tiek morfologijos ir biologijos ypatybių pagrindu, neprieštarauja viena kitai. Disertacijoje pateikiami atpažinimo raktai besparnėms ir sparnuotoms partenogenetinėms patelėms, oviparoms ir patinams bei septynių tirtų rūšių įvairių morfų matavimų lentelės. Disertacijoje aptarta šios genties atstovų tyrimų būklė pasaulyje ir Lietuvoje bei aprašyti faunos, gyvenimo ciklų, morfometrinių, citogenetinių, molekulinių tyrimų ir filogenetinės analizės metodai. Darbe pateikti tyrimų rezultatai gauti išnagrinėjus VU GMF Zoologijos katedros kolekciją ir autorės surinktą medžiagą bei ištyrus septynių Cryptomyzus genties amarų rūšių (C. alboapicalis, C. galeopsidis, C. korschelti, C. leonuri, C. maudamanti, C. ribis ir C. ulmeri) gyvenimų ciklus Lietuvos sąlygomis. Amarai su žinomomis biologijos ypatybėmis panaudoti morfometriniams, citogenetiniams ir molekuliniams tyrimams. Atlikta filogenetinė analizė parodė, kad filogenijos schemos, sudarytos tiek dviejų genų dalinių DNR sekų, tiek morfologijos ir biologijos ypatybių pagrindu, neprieštarauja viena kitai. Disertacijoje pateikiami atpažinimo raktai besparnėms ir sparnuotoms partenogenetinėms patelėms, oviparoms ir patinams bei septynių tirtų rūšių įvairių morfų matavimų lentelės. In this overview, we consider the rationale and practice of invertebrate introductions into Lithuanian waters, the current distribution of introduced species, test the theoretical expectations of introduction of peracaridan species into lakes, and summarize the large-scale consequences of these translocations. After some early attempts to transfer locally available species within the country, peracaridan species from the Ponto-Caspian region were introduced into Lithuanian waters during the 1960s (Pontogammarus robustoides, Obesogammarus crassus, Chaetogammarus warpachowskyi, Paramysis lacustris, Limnomysis benedeni and Hemimysis anomala). After their establishment at the site of first introduction in a newly constructed water reservoir on the Nemunas River, further deliberate introductions into Lithuanian lakes and water reservoirs, as well as into more distant areas, were undertaken. These introduced species soon contributed to fish diet and a subsequent increase in the production of commercially important fish was envisaged. However, our collation of available data does not support the enhancement of fish production in Lithuanian lakes. Although perch (selected as a model fish species) assimilated the introduced species into diet and sometimes in large quantities, there was no subsequent influence on somatic growth rates when compared with perch from lakes devoid of alien peracaridans. Comparisons of littoral fish communities of different lakes, and commercial catches in the lake with the most numerous populations of introduced species also indicate no significant effect on fish production. Negative consequences of introduction are more than obvious in contrast. To date, most of the introduced Ponto-Caspian amphipod and mysid species occur in different sites of the Baltic Sea basin outside Lithuania, and their further dispersal may be expected. Avian malaria parasites are responsible for severe diseases in some domestic and wild birds. These parasites are cosmopolitan in distribution; they are widespread in Europe, including the Baltic region. A peculiarity of current studies of avian Plasmodium species is that information about ecology, distribution, prevalence and other aspects of their biology has been accumulated using free-living birds. To elucidate the significance of malaria infections and their impact on host fitness, behaviour, sexual selection and parasite-host co-evolution, experimental information about Plasmodium spp. virulence, specificity and dynamics of parasitemia in different avian hosts is crucial. Unfortunately such studies remain uncommon. Theobjective of this study was to obtain new field and laboratory experimental data about the biology of avian malaria parasites and to link PCR-based information with data from traditional parasitology. It was demonstrated that prevalence of avian malaria and other haemosporidian parasites is estimated equally well by microscopy and currently used nested PCR-based methods. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. So we encourage using both these tools in parallel during studies of haemosporidians. Šie parazitai dažnai sutinkami įvairiose paukščių grupėse ir yra plačiai paplitę Europoje, tame tarpe ir Baltijos regione. Dabartinių maliarinių parazitų studijų ypatumas yra tas, kad informacija apie šių parazitų ekologiją, paplitimą, įvairovę ir kitus biologijos aspektus yra surenkama iš laisvai gyvenančių paukščių. Vertinant maliarinių parazitų įtaką paukščių fizinei būklei, elgsenai, lytinei atrankai ir parazitų-šeimininkų ko-evoliucijai yra būtina surinkti informaciją apie maliarinių parazitų specifiškumą, virulentiškumą ir parazitemijos vystymąsi skirtinguose paukščiuose. Tokie duomenys gali būti gaunami atliekant eksperimentinius tyrimus. Deja, tokių studijų kol kas yra nedaug. Disertacijos tikslas – lauko ir eksperimentinių tyrimų pagalba surinkti naują medžiagą apie paukščių maliarinių parazitų biologiją bei susieti PGR paremtais metodais gautą informaciją su tradicinės parazitologijos duomenimis. Šių tyrimų metu įrodyta, kad PGR paremtų ir tradicinės parazitologijos (mikroskopijos) metodų, naudojamų tiriant paukščių maliarinius parazitus ir kitas hemosporidijas, tikslumas nesiskiria. Geluoninių plėviasparnių, apsigyvenančių lizdavietėse-gaudyklėse bendrijos, yra potencialūs ekologinių pokyčių ir buveinių kokybės bioindikatoriai sausumos ekosistemose, todėl vis dažniau naudojamos įvairiuose tyrimuose. Darbo tikslas buvo įvertinti lizdavietės rodiklių ir grobio, reikalingo palikuonims aprūpinti, gausumo įtaką lizdavietėse-gaudyklėse apsigyvenančių klosčiavapsvių rūpinimosi palikuonimis elgsenai. Tyrimų metu buvo ištirta lizdavietės skersmens ir gylio įtaka 13-kos lizdavietėse-gaudyklėse apsigyvenančių vapsvų rūšių lizdo struktūrai, palikuonių aprūpinimo maistu elgsenai ir lyčių santykiui; kai kurioms rūšims nustatyti optimalūs lizdavietės rodikliai. Taip pat buvo ištirtas, dažniausiai lizdavietėse-gaudyklėse pasitaikiusios rūšies, Symmorphus allobrogus vystymasis nuo kiaušinio iki suaugėlio; palyginti skirtingų lyčių individų augimo greičiai ir svorio pokyčiai vystymosi metu. Atliktas laboratorinis eksperimentas, kurio rezultatai parodė, kad akelių skaičius lizde būna didesnis, jeigu aplinkoje yra didesnis maisto, reikalingo palikuonims aprūpinti, kiekis. Taip pat įvertinta patelės amžiaus įtaka rūpinimosi palikuonimis elgsenai. The purpose of our study was to establish impact of nesting cavity parameters and prey abundance on the nesting behaviour of solitary xylicolous wasps. We studied nest structure and the influence of nesting cavity width and length on progeny size and sex ratio in 13 wasp species. The development of the most common synanthropic xylicolous wasp in Lithuania, Symmorphus allobrogus, has been investigated: the assimilation of prey and weight loss during development from larva to adult in both sexes have been compared. Results of a laboratory experiment using S. allobrogus as a model species demonstrated that the amount of prey available in the environment affects the number of cells in the nest of solitary wasp. The list of solitary Hymenoptera inhabiting trap-nests in Lithuania are presented.

Winter gnats of the genus Trichocera are one of the main insect groups found in mild climates during the autumn, winter and spring months and so are unique in their way of adapting to living in colder seasons. Phylogenetic links of the genus Trichocera are examined, taxonomy of the genus renewed, species composition of several regions is ascertained and characters for dividing into subgenuses are specified in this thesis. Based on the material collected in Lithuania by standard entomological techniques and by analysis of literature data, a list of 22 species of winter gnats is given with 9 species new for our country. One new for science species of winter gnats is described from Sardinia, Italy. Based on the selected morphologic characters, phylogenetic analysis was performed and 15 species were transferred from one subgenus to another as a result. Characters of male aedeagal complex were found to be a basis for attributing the species into particular subgenus. For the first time important structures of the females of four species, male of one species and type specimens of 15 more species were illustrated. World catalogue of the 110 recent species of Trichocera is compiled and different structures of 106 species are illustrated., Genties Trichocera uodai yra viena pagrindinių vabzdžių grupių, aptinkamų vidutinėse platumose rudens, žiemos ir pavasario mėnesiais, ypatinga savo prisitaikymu gyventi šaltuoju laikotarpiu. Disertacijoje nagrinėjami genties Trichocera rūšių filogenetiniai ryšiai, atnaujinta genties taksonomija, išaiškinta atskirų regionų rūšinė įvairovė, patikslinti skirstymui į pogentes naudotini požymiai. Standartiniais entomologiniais metodais Lietuvoje surinktų žieminių uodų mėginių pagrindu bei pagal literatūros šaltinius buvo sudarytas 22 rūšių katalogas, papildant jį 9 naujomis mūsų šalies faunai rūšimis. Aprašyta nauja mokslui žieminių uodų rūšis iš Sardinijos salos (Italija). Remiantis atrinktais požymiais atlikta filogenetinė analizė, kurios pagrindu penkiolika rūšių perkeltos iš vienų pogenčių į kitas. Nustatyta, kad patinų edeaguso komplekso ypatybės yra svarbiausios skirstant rūšis į pogentes. Pirmą kartą iliustruotos keturių rūšių patelių ir vienos rūšies patino svarbios identifikacijai struktūros bei dar penkiolikos rūšių tipiniai egzemplioriai. Sudarytas 110 recentinių Trichocera genties rūšių pasaulio faunos katalogas, pateiktos 106 rūšių įvairių identifikacinių struktūrų iliustracijos.

Udgivelsesdato: 3 July 2006, Phylogenetic relationships among Palaearctic Ribes and/or Onagraceae inhabiting Aphis species from five countries were examined using mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (CO-I) and nuclear gene elongation factor 1 a (EF-1a) sequences. There was no major conflict between the trees obtained from two data sets; nodes with strong bootstrap support from one analysis never contradicted those strongly supported by the other analysis. Palaearctic species of the subgenus Bursaphis (= "grossulariae" species group of the genus Aphis) form a monophyletic group within the genus Aphis. All these analyses indicated that Aphis grossulariae and A. schneideri are close relatives, which is supported by the information on experimental and probably also natural hybridisation. Our data indicate the independent colonisation of Ribes spp. by two species groups of the genus Aphis: A. triglochinis (subgenus Aphis s. str.), and A. grossulariae and A. schneideri (subgenus Bursaphis). Once the subgenus Bursaphis (and other subgenera) is accepted, the subgenus Aphis s. str. will require further subdivision.
