The potential dependence of the rate of dehydration of formic acid to adsorbed CO (COad) on Pt at pH 1 has been studied on a polycrystalline Pt surface by time-resolved surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection mode (ATR-SEIRAS) with simultaneous recording of current transients after a potential step. A range of formic acid concentrations has been used to obtain a deeper insight into the mechanism of the reaction. Our experiments have allowed us to confirm that the potential dependence of the rate of dehydration has a bell shape, going through a maximum around the potential of zero total charge (pztc) of the most active site. The analysis of the integrated intensity and frequency of the bands corresponding to COL and COB/M shows a progressive population of the active sites on the surface. The observed potential dependence of the rate of formation of COad is consistent with a mechanism in which the reversible electroadsorption of HCOOad is followed by its rate-determining reduction to COad.

Initially, the Pt(111), Pt(110), and Pt(100) electrodes covered with CO were used. To demonstrate the validity of the procedure, the values obtained for the pzc of these electrodes were compared with those previously reported in the literature and also with those expected from work function changes. An excellent agreement has been found. After that, the values for the pzc of the stepped surfaces having (111) terraces and (110) steps were determined. For these surfaces, the pzc initially diminishes as the step density increases, in accordance with the expected diminution of the work function due to the Smoluchowski effect on the step site. However, for the shorter terraces, the pzc value increases with the step density, probably because of step dipole-dipole coupling due to the presence of a CO layer on the electrode.

Inhibition by CO of the corrosion of Fe, Ni, and three alloys, containing either Fe and large amounts of Ni (Incoloy 825) or large amounts of Fe (Uniloy-420 and N80 steels) in solutions containing between 7.5% and 28% HCl was studied using potentiodynamic polarization curves, gravimetric tests, and FTIRS. In all cases, but Uniloy-420 in 28% HCl, a clear inhibition of corrosion in the presence of CO in the solution was shown by the gravimetric tests and from cyclic voltammetry, the inhibition being higher in the case of Ni and Ni-containing alloys. CO chemisorbed on Fe and/or Ni atoms present on the alloy surface was identified as the species responsible for corrosion inhibition. The adsorption isotherms of CO on zinc oxide in the temperature range of 233-313 K have been determined. It has been shown that, at a low degree of surface filling, these isotherms are described by the equation of induced adsorption, which expresses the change in the electron density of the surface as the surface covered by adsorbate increases. Adsorbed CO molecules are found in two positively charged forms. The preliminary treatment of the surface by glow discharge plasma in O2 results in the formation of additional adsorption centers. © 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
