Accurate star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies are fundamental for understanding the build-up of their stellar content. However, the most accurate SFHs - those obtained from colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of resolved stars reaching the oldest main sequence turnoffs (oMSTO) - are presently limited to a few systems in the Local Group. It is therefore crucial to determine the reliability and range of applicability of SFHs derived from integrated light spectroscopy, as this affects our understanding of unresolved galaxies from low to high redshift. To evaluate the reliability of current full spectral fitting techniques in deriving SFHs from integrated light spectroscopy by comparing SFHs from integrated spectra to those obtained from deep CMDs of resolved stars. We have obtained a high signal--to--noise (S/N $\sim$ 36.3 per \AA) integrated spectrum of a field in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using EFOSC2 at the 3.6 meter telescope at La Silla Observatory. For this same field, resolved stellar data reaching the oMSTO are available. We have compared the star formation rate (SFR) as a function of time and the age-metallicity relation (AMR) obtained from the integrated spectrum using {\tt STECKMAP}, and the CMD using the IAC-star/MinnIAC/IAC-pop set of routines. For the sake of completeness we also use and discuss other synthesis codes ({\tt STARLIGHT} and {\tt ULySS}) to derive the SFR and AMR from the integrated LMC spectrum. We find very good agreement (average differences $\sim$ 4.1 $\%$) between the SFR(t) and the AMR obtained using {\tt STECKMAP} on the integrated light spectrum, and the CMD analysis. {\tt STECKMAP} minimizes the impact of the age-metallicity degeneracy and has the advantage of preferring smooth solutions to recover complex SFHs by means of a penalized $\chi^2$. Among the 100 strong lens candidates found in the COSMOS field, 20 with redshifts in the range [0.34,1.13], feature multiple images of background sources. Using the multi-wavelength coverage of the field and its spectroscopic follow-up, we characterize the evolution with redshift of the environment and of the dark-matter (DM) fraction of the lens galaxies. We present new redshift of the strong lens candidates. The lens environment is characterized by the projected 10 closest galaxies around each lens and by the number of galaxies with a projected distance less than 1Mpc at the lens galaxy redshift. In both cases, we perform similar measurements on a control sample of twin non-lens early type galaxies (ETGs). In addition, we identify group members and field galaxies in the X-ray and optical catalogs of galaxy groups. From those catalogs, we measure the external shear contribution at the lens galaxy positions. The systems are then modeled using a SIE plus the external shear due to the groups. We observe that the average stellar mass of lens galaxies increases with z and that the environment of lens galaxies is compatible with that of the twins. During the lens modeling, we notice that, when let free, the external shear points in a direction which is the mean direction of the external shear due to groups and of the closest galaxy to the lens. We notice that the DM fraction of the lens galaxies within the Einstein radius decreases as the redshift increases. Given these, we conclude that, while the environment of lens galaxies is compatible with that of non-lens ETGS, their mass properties evolves significantly with redshift: it is still not clear whether this advocates in favor of a stronger lensing bias toward massive objects at high redshift or is simply representative of the high proportion of massive and high stellar density galaxies at high redshift., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. We report on the redshift of the lensing galaxy and of the quasar QJ 0158-4325 and on the lens model of the system. A deep VLT/FORS2 spectrum and HST/NICMOS-F160W images are deconvolved. From the images we derive the light profile of the lensing galaxy and an accurate relative astrometry for the system. In addition we measure the flux ratio between the quasar images in the MgII emission line to constrain the mass model. From the spectrum we measure the redshift of the lensing galaxy (z=0.317+/-0.001) and of the quasar (z=1.294+/-0.008). Using the flux ratio in the lens model allows to discard the SIE as a suitable approximation of the lens potential. On the contrary the truncated-PIEMD gives a good fit to the lens and leads to a time delay of t(A-B)=-14.5+/-0.1 days, with H0=73 km/s/Mpc. Using the flux ratio to constrain the mass model favors the truncated-PIEMD over the SIE, while ignoring this constraint leaves the choice open., Comment: Research Note, Accepted for publication in A&A

AIMS: We present a sample of candidate quasars selected using the KX-technique. The data cover 0.68 deg^2 of the X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM) Large-Scale Structure (LSS) survey area where overlapping multi-wavelength imaging data permits an investigation of the physical nature of selected sources. METHODS: The KX method identifies quasars on the basis of their optical (R and z') to near-infrared (Ks) photometry and point-like morphology. We combine these data with optical (u*,g'r',i',z') and mid-infrared (3.6-24 micron) wavebands to reconstruct the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of candidate quasars. RESULTS: Of 93 sources selected as candidate quasars by the KX method, 25 are classified as quasars by the subsequent SED analysis. Spectroscopic observations are available for 12/25 of these sources and confirm the quasar hypothesis in each case. Even more, 90% of the SED-classified quasars show X-ray emission, a property not shared by any of the false candidates in the KX-selected sample. Applying a photometric redshift analysis to the sources without spectroscopy indicates that the 25 sources classified as quasars occupy the interval 0.7 < z < 2.5. In a previous work, three bright MIR/radio sources were discovered in the nuclear region of NGC1365. We here confirm that these sources are young and massive ``embedded'' clusters, and derive their parameters, such as extinction, age and mass. Using ISAAC and VISIR at the VLT we obtained NIR and MIR maps and LR spectra. The dataset is first interpreted by comparing the observations with images and spectra of the close-by young cluster R136 in the LMC and then by using model predictions for both the nebular emission lines and the spectral energy distribution of the sources. We produce maps of the region containing the three sources in the R, J, Ks, L' bands and at 12.8micro. We also provide spectra in K, L and N. The spectral energy distribution of the three sources rises with wavelength. Emission lines from ionised hydrogen and molecular hydrogen are detected, as well as PAH emission. Conspicuous [NeII]12.8 line is also present, while neither the [ArIII] 8.9 nor the [SIV] 10.4 lines are detected. This provides a stringent constraint on the age of the sources: they are relatively evolved young clusters (6-8 Myr). Owing to their ionising photon rates and ages, they must be extremely massive clusters (around 10^7 solar masses). Their MIR spectral energy distribution suggests the presence of two components: (1) an optically thin component, with a continuum comparable to that of R136, and (2) an optically thick component which might be related to subsequent or on-going episodes of star formation. These sources are good candidates for evolving according to a bi-modal hydrodynamical regime, in which matter is trapped at the centre of a compact and massive cluster., Comment: A&A accepted, 23 pages, 22 figures and 1 table

In the course of a mid-infrared imaging campaign of close-by active galaxies, we discovered the mid-infrared counterparts of bright compact radio sources in the central star-forming region of NGC1808. We aim at confirming that these sources are deeply embedded, young star clusters and at deriving some of their intrinsic properties. To complement the mid-infrared data, we have collected a set of near-infrared data with ISAAC at the VLT: J, Ks, and L' images, as well as low-resolution, long-slit spectra for three of the sources. Surprisingly, the new images unveil a near-infrared counterpart for only one of the mid-infrared/radio sources, namely M8 in the L' band. All the other sources are so deeply embedded that their emission does not pop out above an extended diffuse near-infrared emission. The near-infrared spectra of the sources look alike, with intense, ionised hydrogen lines. This supports the interpretation of these sources in terms of embedded young clusters. AIMS: For such studies, one needs to have an excellent knowledge of the close environment of the lensed images in order to model the lensing potential: this means observational data over a large field-of-view and spectroscopy at high spatial resolution. METHODS: We present VIMOS integral field observations around four lensed quasars: HE 0230-2130, RX J0911.4+0551, H 1413+117 and B 1359+154. Using the low, medium and high resolution modes, we study the quasar images and the quasar environments, as well as provide a detailed report of the data reduction. RESULTS: Comparison between the quasar spectra of the different images reveals differences for HE 0230-2130, RX J0911.4+0551 and H 1413+117: flux ratios between the images of the same quasar are different when measured in the emission lines and in the continuum. We have also measured the redshifts of galaxies in the neighborhood of HE 0230-2130 and RX J0911.4+0551 which possibly contribute to the total lensing potential. CONCLUSIONS: A careful analysis reveals that microlensing is the most natural explanation for the (de)magnification of the continuum emitting region of the background sources. We present the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a hard X-ray selected sample. The sample contains 136 sources with F(2-10 keV)>10^-14 erg/cm^2/s and 132 are AGNs. The sources are detected in a 1 square degree area of the XMM-Newton-Medium Deep Survey where optical data from the VVDS, CFHTLS surveys, and infrared data from the SWIRE survey are available. Based on a SED fitting technique we derive photometric redshifts with sigma(1+z)=0.11 and 6% of outliers and identify AGN signatures in 83% of the objects. This fraction is higher than derived when a spectroscopic classification is available. The remaining 17+9-6% of AGNs shows star-forming galaxy SEDs (SF class). The sources with AGN signatures are divided in two classes, AGN1 (33+6-1%) and AGN2 (50+6-11). The AGN1 and AGN2 classes include sources whose SEDs are fitted by type 1 and type 2 AGN templates, respectively. On average, AGN1s show soft X-ray spectra, consistent with being unabsorbed, while AGN2s and SFs show hard X-ray spectra, consistent with being absorbed. The analysis of the average SEDs as a function of X-ray luminosity shows a reddening of the IR SEDs, consistent with a decreasing contribution from the host galaxy at higher luminosities. The AGNs in the SF classes are likely obscured in the mid-infrared, as suggested by their low L(3-20micron)/Lcorr(0.5-10 keV) ratios. We confirm the previously found correlation for AGNs between the radio luminosity and the X-ray and the mid-infrared luminosities. The X-ray-radio correlation can be used to identify heavily absorbed AGNs. However, the estimated radio fluxes for the missing AGN population responsible for the bulk of the background at E>10 keV are too faint to be detected even in the deepest current radio surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Following the presentation of the XMM-LSS X-ray source detection package by Pacaud et al., we provide the source lists for the first 5.5 surveyed square degrees. The catalogues pertain to the [0.5-2] and [2-10] keV bands and contain in total 3385 point-like or extended sources above a detection likelihood of 15 in either band. The agreement with deep logN-logS is excellent. The main parameters considered are position, countrate, source extent with associated likelihood values. A set of additional quantities such as astrometric corrections and fluxes are further calculated while errors on the position and countrate are deduced from simulations. We describe the construction of the band-merged catalogue allowing rapid sub-sample selection and easy cross-correlation with external multi-wavelength catalogues. A small optical CFHTLS multi-band subset of objects is associated wich each source along with an X-ray/optical overlay. We make the full X-ray images available in FITS format. We present a sample of 29 galaxy clusters from the XMM-LSS survey over an area of some 5deg2 out to a redshift of z=1.05. The sample clusters, which represent about half of the X-ray clusters identified in the region, follow well defined X-ray selection criteria and are all spectroscopically confirmed. For all clusters, we provide X-ray luminosities and temperatures as well as masses. The cluster distribution peaks around z=0.3 and T =1.5 keV, half of the objects being groups with a temperature below 2 keV. Our L-T(z) relation points toward self-similar evolution, but does not exclude other physically plausible models. Assuming that cluster scaling laws follow self-similar evolution, our number density estimates up to z=1 are compatible with the predictions of the concordance cosmology and with the findings of previous ROSAT surveys. Our well monitored selection function allowed us to demonstrate that the inclusion of selection effects is essential for the correct determination of the evolution of the L-T relation, which may explain the contradictory results from previous studies. Extensive simulations show that extending the survey area to 10deg2 has the potential to exclude the non-evolution hypothesis, but that constraints on more refined ICM models will probably be limited by the large intrinsic dispersion of the L-T relation. We further demonstrate that increasing the dispersion in the scaling laws increases the number of detectable clusters, hence generating further degeneracy [in addition to sigma8, Omega_m, L(M,z) and T(M,z)] in the cosmological interpretation of the cluster number counts. We provide useful empirical formulae for the cluster mass-flux and mass-count-rate relations as well as a comparison between the XMM-LSS mass sensitivity and that of forthcoming SZ surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS. Assuming that cluster scaling laws follow self-similar evolution, our number density estimates up to z=1 are compatible with the predictions of the concordance cosmology and with the findings of previous ROSAT surveys. Our well monitored selection function allowed us to demonstrate that the inclusion of selection effects is essential for the correct determination of the evolution of the L-T relation, which may explain the contradictory results from previous studies. Extensive simulations show that extending the survey area to 10deg2 has the potential to exclude the non-evolution hypothesis, but that constraints on more refined ICM models will probably be limited by the large intrinsic dispersion of the L-T relation. We further demonstrate that increasing the dispersion in the scaling laws increases the number of detectable clusters, hence generating further degeneracy [in addition to sigma8, Omega_m, L(M,z) and T(M,z)] in the cosmological interpretation of the cluster number counts. We present a sample of 29 galaxy clusters from the XMM-LSS survey over an area of some 5deg2 out to a redshift of z=1.05. The sample clusters, which represent about half of the X-ray clusters identified in the region, follow well defined X-ray selection criteria and are all spectroscopically confirmed. For all clusters, we provide X-ray luminosities and temperatures as well as masses. The cluster distribution peaks around z=0.3 and T =1.5 keV, half of the objects being groups with a temperature below 2 keV. Our L-T(z) relation points toward self-similar evolution, but does not exclude other physically plausible models. We present the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a hard X-ray selected sample. The sample contains 136 sources with F(2-10 keV)>10^-14 erg/cm^2/s and 132 are AGNs. The sources are detected in a 1 square degree area of the XMM-Newton-Medium Deep Survey where optical data from the VVDS, CFHTLS surveys, and infrared data from the SWIRE survey are available. Based on a SED fitting technique we derive photometric redshifts with sigma(1+z)=0.11 and 6% of outliers and identify AGN signatures in 83% of the objects. This fraction is higher than derived when a spectroscopic classification is available. The remaining 17+9-6% of AGNs shows star-forming galaxy SEDs (SF class). The sources with AGN signatures are divided in two classes, AGN1 (33+6-1%) and AGN2 (50+6-11). The AGN1 and AGN2 classes include sources whose SEDs are fitted by type 1 and type 2 AGN templates, respectively. On average, AGN1s show soft X-ray spectra, consistent with being unabsorbed, while AGN2s and SFs show hard X-ray spectra, consistent with being absorbed. The analysis of the average SEDs as a function of X-ray luminosity shows a reddening of the IR SEDs, consistent with a decreasing contribution from the host galaxy at higher luminosities. The AGNs in the SF classes are likely obscured in the mid-infrared, as suggested by their low L(3-20micron)/Lcorr(0.5-10 keV) ratios. We confirm the previously found correlation for AGNs between the radio luminosity and the X-ray and the mid-infrared luminosities. The X-ray-radio correlation can be used to identify heavily absorbed AGNs. However, the estimated radio fluxes for the missing AGN population responsible for the bulk of the background at E>10 keV are too faint to be detected even in the deepest current radio surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyze X-ray sources detected over 4.2 pseudo-contiguous sq. deg. in the 0.5-2 keV and 2-10 keV bands down to fluxes of 2x10^{-15} and 8x10^{-15} erg/s/cm^2 respectively, as part of the XMM Large Scale Structure Survey. The logN-logS in both bands shows a steep slope at bright fluxes, but agrees well with other determinations below ~2x10^{-14} erg/s/cm^2. The detected sources resolve close to 30 per cent of the X-ray background in the 2-10 keV band. We study the two-point angular clustering of point sources using nearest neighbours and correlation function statistics and find a weak, positive signal for ~1130 sources in the 0.5-2 keV band, but no correlation for ~400 sources in the 2-10 keV band below scales of 100 arcsec. A sub-sample of ~200 faint sources with hard X-ray count ratios, that is likely to be dominated by obscured AGN, does show a positive signal with the data allowing for a large scaling of the angular correlation length, but only at the ~2 (3) sigma level, based on re-sampling (Poisson) statistics. High resolution mid-infrared (MIR) images of the central region of NGC1068 have been obtained with VISIR, the multi-mode MIR instrument recently installed at the ESO/VLT on Paranal. A map of the emission at 12.8mic with increased sensitivity over the central 8"x 8" area is discussed. It shows a central core (unresolved along the E-W direction) and an extended emission which draws a spiral pattern similar to that observed on near-infrared images. Patches of MIR emission can be detected up to a distance of 4" from the core. The deconvolved 12.8mic map is fully consistent with previous high-resolution MIR observations. It highlights the structure of the extended emission, already seen on the un-deconvolved image, and allows to identify a set of mid-infrared sources: 7 in the NE quadrant and 5 in the SW quadrant. The MIR emission map is compared with those obtained at comparable angular resolution in the near-infrared and in the [OIII] line emission. The very good correlation between the VISIR map and the HST optical map supports the idea that the MIR emission not associated with the torus arises from dust associated with the narrow line region clouds. The N-S extension of the MIR core (0.44") is then probably simply due to the mixing of the MIR emission from the dusty torus and the MIR emission from NLR cloud B, located only 0.1" to the North., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure (reduced quality), accepted MNRAS Letter. High resolution, mid-infrared (MIR) images of a set of nine nearby active galaxies are presented. The data were obtained with the TIMMI2 instrument mounted at the ESO 3.6m telescope using a set of N-band narrow filters. The resulting images have an angular resolution of 0.6"-1". The MIR emission has been resolved in four galaxies: NGC253, NGC1365, NGC1808 and NGC7469. The images unveil a circumnuclear population of unknown MIR sources in NGC1365 and NGC1808, coincident with radio sources. These MIR/radio sources are interpreted in terms of embedded young star clusters. A high-resolution MIR map of NGC253 is also presented, and enables the identification of a previously unknown MIR counterpart to the radio nucleus. Extended MIR emission is detected in NGC7469, and concurs with previous observations in the NIR and radio. For this source, an interesting morphological difference between the 10.4mic and the 11.9mic emission is observed, suggesting the presence of a dust-rich micro-bar. Our MIR images of Circinus do not show resolved emission from the nucleus down to an angular scale of 0.5". In the case of NGC2992, an upper limit to the extended MIR emission can be set. We revisit in this paper the location of the various components observed in the AGN of NGC1068. Discrepancies between previously published studies are explained, and a new measurement for the absolute location of the K-band emission peak is provided. It is found to be consistent with the position of the central engine as derived by Gallimore (1997), Capetti (1997) and Kishimoto (1999). A series of map overlays is then presented and discussed. Model predictions of dusty tori show that the nuclear unresolved NIR-MIR emission is compatible with a broad range of models: the nuclear SED alone does not strongly constrain the torus geometry, while placing reasonable constraints on its size and thickness. The extended MIR emission observed within the ionizing cone is shown to be well explained by the presence of optically thick dust clouds exposed to the central engine radiation and having a small covering factor. Conversely, a distribution of diffuse dust particles within the ionizing cone is discarded. A simple model for the H2 and CO emission observed perpendicularly to the axis of the ionizing cone is proposed. We show that a slight tilt between the molecular disc and the Compton thick central absorber naturally reproduces the observed distribution of H2 of CO emission., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, revised version for A&A

We present the first result of a comprehensive spectroscopic study of quasar host galaxies. On-axis, spatially resolved spectra of low redshift quasars have been obtained with FORS1, mounted on the 8.2m ESO Very Large Telescope, Antu. The spectra are spatially deconvolved using a spectroscopic version of the ``MCS deconvolution algorithm''. The algorithm decomposes two dimensional spectra into the individual spectra of the central point-like nucleus and of its host galaxy. Applied to HE1503+0228, at z=0.135 (M_B=-23.0), it provides us with the spectrum of the host galaxy between 3600A, and 8500A, (rest-frame), at a mean resolving power of 700. The data allow us to measure several of the important Lick indices. The stellar populations and gas ionization state of the host galaxy of HE1503+0228, are very similar to the ones measured for normal non-AGN galaxies. Dynamical information is also available for the gas and stellar components of the galaxy. Using deconvolution and a deprojection algorithm, velocity curves are derived for emission lines, from the center up to 4arcsec, away from the nucleus of the galaxy. Fitting a simple three-components mass model (point mass, spherical halo of dark matter, disk) to the position-velocity diagram, we infer a mass of M(r<1kpc) = (2.0 +- 0.3) 10^{10} solar mass within the central kiloparsec of the galaxy, and a mass integrated over 10 kpc of M(r<10kpc) = (1.9 +- 0.3) 10^{11} solar mass, with an additional 10% error due to the uncertainty on the inclination of the galaxy. This, in combination with the analysis of the stellar populations indicates that the host galaxy of HE1503+0228, is a normal spiral galaxy., Comment: accepted by AA, 11 pages

The gravitational potential responsible for the lensing effect in SBS 1520+530 is studied over length scales from a few arc-seconds to a few arc-minutes. For this purpose, we use sharply deconvolved Hubble Space Telescope images in the optical and near-IR, in combination with ground based optical data obtained over a wider field-of-view. In particular, we have carried out a multi-color analysis in order to identify groups or clusters of galaxies along the line of sight. Photometric redshifts are measured for 139 galaxies unveiling significant excesses of galaxies 1.0 arcmin, NW and 1.7 arcmin, SW of the main lensing galaxy. The photometric redshift inferred both for the main lensing galaxy and for the galaxy concentrations is z=0.9^{+0.10}_{-0.25}. This is in rough agreement with the measured spectroscopic redshift of the main lensing galaxy, z=0.71 (Burud et al. 2002), suggesting that it is part of a larger group or cluster. We investigate the impact of including the galaxy cluster, first on the modelling of the lensing system, and second on the expected time--delay between the two quasar images., Comment: Accepted in A&A. 10 pages. Fitting a simple three-components mass model (point mass, spherical halo of dark matter, disk) to the position-velocity diagram, we infer a mass of M(r<1kpc) = (2.0 +- 0.3) 10^{10} solar mass within the central kiloparsec of the galaxy, and a mass integrated over 10 kpc of M(r<10kpc) = (1.9 +- 0.3) 10^{11} solar mass, with an additional 10% error due to the uncertainty on the inclination of the galaxy. This, in combination with the analysis of the stellar populations indicates that the host galaxy of HE1503+0228, is a normal spiral galaxy., Comment: accepted by AA, 11 pages

The gravitational potential responsible for the lensing effect in SBS 1520+530 is studied over length scales from a few arc-seconds to a few arc-minutes. For this purpose, we use sharply deconvolved Hubble Space Telescope images in the optical and near-IR, in combination with ground based optical data obtained over a wider field-of-view. In particular, we have carried out a multi-color analysis in order to identify groups or clusters of galaxies along the line of sight. Photometric redshifts are measured for 139 galaxies unveiling significant excesses of galaxies 1.0 arcmin, NW and 1.7 arcmin, SW of the main lensing galaxy. The photometric redshift inferred both for the main lensing galaxy and for the galaxy concentrations is z=0.9^{+0.10}_{-0.25}. This is in rough agreement with the measured spectroscopic redshift of the main lensing galaxy, z=0.71 (Burud et al. 2002), suggesting that it is part of a larger group or cluster. We present spectral results from a multi-satellite, broad-band campaign on the Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ton S180 performed at the end of 1999. We discuss the spectral-energy distribution of the source, combining simultaneous Chandra, ASCA and EUVE data with contemporaneous FUSE, HST, and ground-based optical and infra-red data. The resulting SED shows that most of the energy is emitted in the 10 -- 100 eV regime, which must be dominated by the primary energy source. No spectral turnover is evident in the UV regime. This, the strong soft X-ray emission, and the overall shape of the SED indicate that emission from the accretion disk peaks between 15 and 100 eV. High resolution FUSE spectra showing UV absorption due to O VI and the lack of detectable X-ray absorption in the Chandra spectrum demonstrate the presence of a low column density of highly ionized gas along our line-of-sight. The highly-ionized state of the circumnuclear gas is most likely linked to the high luminosity and steep spectrum of the active nucleus. Given the strong ionizing flux in Ton S180, it is possible that the clouds within a few tens of light days of the central source are too highly ionized to produce much line emission. Thus the narrow width of the emission lines in Ton S180 is due to the emission arising from large radii., Comment: 38 pages, 8 figures, some color figures. We report the discovery of an extremely red object (ERO) in a medium-deep ISOCAM extragalactic survey. The object is also a radio source. Subsequent VLT NIR spectroscopy revealed a prominent Halpha line giving a redshift of 1.5. We present results about the distribution and kinematics of the molecular environment of the AGN in NGC1068, over a 1.5'' x 3.5'' region around the central engine in NGC1068, derived from H2 line emission detected with ISAAC at VLT/ANTU on ESO/Paranal. The H2 emitting molecular gas is found to be distributed along the East-West direction and with two main peak emission (knots) located at a distance of about 70 pc from the central engine. The eastern H2 knot is more intense than the western one. The line profiles mapped across the entire 1.5'' x 3.5'' region, at a spatial resolution of 0.3'' x 0.45'', appear to be quite complex with either a blue or red wing. At first order, we find a velocity difference of 140 km/s between the two knots; if interpreted as quasi-keplerian velocity, this implies a central enclosed mass of 10^8 solar masses., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted A&A Letter

Mid-infrared images of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 obtained with the ISO satellite are presented together with the results of a one-year monitoring campaign of the 2.5-11.7 micron spectrum. Contemporaneous optical photometric and spectrophotometric observations are also presented. The galaxy appears as a point-like source at the resolution of the ISOCAM instrument, 4-5". The 2.5-11.7 micron average spectrum of the nucleus in Mrk 279 shows a strong power law continuum with a spectral index alpha = -0.80+/-0.05 and weak PAH emission features. The Mrk 279 spectral energy distribution shows a mid-IR bump, which extends from 2 to 15-20 micron . The mid-IR bump is consistent with thermal emission from dust grains at a distance of >= 100 light-days. No significant variations of the mid-IR flux have been detected during our observing campaign, consistent with the relatively low amplitude (~10 % rms) of the optical variability during the campaign.
