Abstract: This dissertation reports on several experimental projects studying electronic transport in thin-film electronic devices. Self-assembly methods and graphene were used to realise devices contacting films of self-assembled PbS quantum dots. The devices have exhibited single-electron tunnelling with a high yield. The electrical properties of the junctions are studied individually and collectively using statistical tools to extract correlations between device geometries and electrical data. The dissertation includes discussion of the theory of relevant electronic transport including numerical simulations. Several initiated projects deriving from this work are introduced. A second device reported in this thesis is a memristive switch. Contacting thin films of Al2O3 with graphene delivered junctions which exhibit memristive behaviour with an ultrahigh on-oﬀ conductance ratio. The conduction state of the junctions is correlated with morphological changes in the devices, whereby conductive flament formation in the junction is found to lead to electrically-controllable and reversible gas encapsulation in bubbles in the structure. The device is measured electrically and topographically, and the correlation between the two aspects is studied. A discussion of memristive conduction is included with numerical simulations. A third section reports on a project studying thermoelectricity in self-assembled molecular junctions, as they show potential for improved thermoelectric efficiency for energy harvesting; this is discussed in the dissertation. Strategies to benchmark the studies are presented with relevant devices fabricated and measured. These include the development of a measurement protocol to study thermoelectricity in devices, studies of electrical coupling between various molecular structures and graphene electrodes, molecular-structure dependence of electrical and thermal conductance of junctions. Preliminary results and on-going work are discussed.

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between the pre-extubation sum of eye and motor components of the Glasgow Coma Score (GCS-EM) and odds of extubation failure in patients with acute brain injury being liberated from mechanical ventilation. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a prospective, multicenter observational study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03400904). SETTING: Sixty-three hospital sites worldwide, with patient recruitment from January 2018 to November 2020. PATIENTS: One thousand one hundred fifty-two critically ill patients with acute brain injury, with a median age of 54 years, of whom 783 (68.0%) were male, 559 (48.5%) had traumatic brain injury, and 905 (78.6%) had a GCS-EM greater than 8 before extubation (scores range from 2 to 10). INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: GCS-EM was computed in intubated patients on the day of extubation. The main outcome was extubation failure, defined as unplanned reintubation within 5 days of extubation. Analyses used multilevel logistic regression with adjustment for patient characteristics and a random intercept for hospital site. In the primary analysis, GCS-EM was not associated with extubation failure (odds ratio, 1.07 per additional point; 95% CI, 0.87-1.31). Findings were consistent in sensitivity analyses that: 1) used different adjustment covariates, 2) included a verbal estimate to derive an overall GCS, 3) accounted for missing data, 4) considered a 2-day time interval to define extubation failure, 5) accounted for competing risks, and 6) used a propensity score-based model. There was no association between GCS-EM and extubation outcome in subgroups defined by brain injury diagnosis or age. CONCLUSIONS: In this large, contemporary, multicenter cohort of patients with acute brain injury, we found no association between the GCS-EM and odds of extubation failure. Abstract: Purpose: The use of arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) as a target intervention to manage elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) and its effect on clinical outcomes remain unclear. We aimed to describe targets for PaCO2 in acute brain injured (ABI) patients and assess the occurrence of abnormal PaCO2 values during the first week in the intensive care unit (ICU). The secondary aim was to assess the association of PaCO2 with in-hospital mortality. Methods: We carried out a secondary analysis of a multicenter prospective observational study involving adult invasively ventilated patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), or ischemic stroke (IS). PaCO2 was collected on day 1, 3, and 7 from ICU admission. Normocapnia was defined as PaCO2 > 35 and to 45 mmHg; mild hypocapnia as 32–35 mmHg; severe hypocapnia as 26–31 mmHg, forced hypocapnia as < 26 mmHg, and hypercapnia as > 45 mmHg. Results: 1476 patients (65.9% male, mean age 52 ± 18 years) were included. On ICU admission, 804 (54.5%) patients were normocapnic (incidence 1.37 episodes per person/day during ICU stay), and 125 (8.5%) and 334 (22.6%) were mild or severe hypocapnic (0.52 and 0.25 episodes/day). Forced hypocapnia and hypercapnia were used in 40 (2.7%) and 173 (11.7%) patients. PaCO2 had a U-shape relationship with in-hospital mortality with only severe hypocapnia and hypercapnia being associated with increased probability of in-hospital mortality (omnibus p value = 0.0009). Important differences were observed across different subgroups of ABI patients. Conclusions: Normocapnia and mild hypocapnia are common in ABI patients and do not affect patients' outcome. Extreme derangements of PaCO2 values were significantly associated with increased in-hospital mortality.

Abstract: The lifetimes of the first 2⁺ excited states of ²¹²,²¹⁰Po were measured in two transfer reactions ²⁰⁸Pb(¹²C,⁸Be)²¹²Po and ²⁰⁸Pb(¹²C,¹⁰Be)²¹⁰Po by the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift (RDDS) method and by the Doppler Shift Attenuation method (DSAM), respectively. The derived absolute B(E2) values of 2.6(3) W.u. for ²¹²Po and 1.83(28) W.u. for ²¹⁰Po indicate low collectivity. It is shown that the properties of the yrast 2₁⁺, 4₁⁺, 6₁⁺ and 8₁⁺ states in both nuclei cannot be described consistently in the framework of nuclear shell models. It is also demonstrated in the case of ²¹⁰Po that Quasi-particle Phonon Model (QPM) calculations cannot overcome this problem thus indicating the existence of a peculiarity which is neglected in both theoretical approaches.

5. Did the organization of primary care practices during the COVID-19 pandemic influence quality and safety? an international survey

Abstract: Background: Changes in demographics with an older population, the illness panorama with increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases, and the shift from hospital care to home-based care place demand on primary health care, which requires multiprofessional collaboration and team-based organization of work. The COVID-19 pandemic affected health care in various ways, such as heightened infection control measures, changing work practices, and increased workload. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between primary care practices’ organization, and quality and safety changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Data were collected from 38 countries in a large online survey, the PRICOV-19 study. For this paper, the participating practices were categorized as “Only GPs”, comprising practices with solely general practitioners (GPs) and/or GP trainees, without any other health care professionals (n = 1,544), and “Multiprofessional,” comprising practices with at least one GP or GP trainee and one or more other health professionals (n = 3,936). Results: Both categories of practices improved in infection control routines when compared before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A larger proportion of the multiprofessional practices changed their routines to protect vulnerable patients. Telephone triage was used in more “Multiprofessional” practices, whereas “Only GPs” were more likely to perform video consultations as an alternative to physical visits. Both types of practices reported that the time to review new guidelines and scientific literature decreased during the pandemic. However, both had more meetings to discuss directives than before the pandemic. Conclusions: Multiprofessional teams were keener to introduce changes to the care organization to protect vulnerable patients. 6. Agricultural Land Use Change after NAFTA in Central West Mexico

Abstract: Se ha sugerido que el cambio en el uso del suelo agrícola y la modernización de las técnicas de producción agrícola están relacionados con la pérdida de diversidad de cultivos. Dos procesos contribuyen a esta pérdida; el primero es la sustitución de variedades locales por variedades modernas, y el segundo es el abandono de cultivos tradicionales a favor de cultivos comerciales. Estudiamos la expresión de estos procesos en una región que es tanto un centro de agrobiodiversidad y cultural como uno de los exportadores de frutas más significativos de México. Analizamos el cambio agrícola basado en la transformación de las áreas de cultivo y las ubicaciones de los cultivos principales en el estado de Michoacán. Examinamos las estadísticas del área cosechada de cultivos desde 1950 hasta 2015 e identificamos 23 cultivos como los más importantes en términos de área cosechada y valor monetario. Después del Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN), el área cosechada de nueve cultivos cambió significativamente: siete aumentaron y dos disminuyeron. Se observaron tendencias positivas para frutas comerciales orientadas a mercados de exportación y tendencias negativas para cultivos tradicionales. Estos cultivos, como frijoles y maíz, son importantes para la seguridad alimentaria. Además, analizamos cómo estos cambios en el uso del suelo y la agricultura se superponen en zonas de cambio en el área plantada de maíz. Utilizando una base de datos de razas de maíz, identificamos tres razas nativas de maíz que podrían estar en riesgo debido al abandono del maíz en favor de cultivos comerciales., It has been suggested that agricultural land use change and modernization in agricultural production techniques are related to the loss of crop diversity. Two processes contribute to this loss; first is the replacement of landraces by modern varieties, and second is the abandonment of traditional crops in favor of cash crops. We studied the expression of these processes in a region that is both an agro-biodiversity and cultural center and one of the most significant fruit exporters of Mexico. We analyzed agricultural change based on the transformation of cropping areas and the primary crops’ locations in Michoacán state. We examined the crop-harvested area statistics from 1950 to 2015, and identified 23 crops as the most important in terms of harvested area and monetary value. After NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), harvested area for nine crops changed significantly: seven crops increased, and two decreased. Positive trends were observed for commercial fruits oriented to export markets, and negative trends were observed for traditional crops. These crops, such as beans and maize, are important for food security. Additionally, we analyzed how these land-use and agricultural changes overlap in zones of maize planted-area change. Abstract: Background: There is insufficient evidence to guide ventilatory targets in acute brain injury (ABI). Recent studies have shown associations between mechanical power (MP) and mortality in critical care populations. We aimed to describe MP in ventilated patients with ABI, and evaluate associations between MP and clinical outcomes. Methods: In this preplanned, secondary analysis of a prospective, multi-center, observational cohort study (ENIO, NCT03400904), we included adult patients with ABI (Glasgow Coma Scale ≤ 12 before intubation) who required mechanical ventilation (MV) ≥ 24 h. Using multivariable log binomial regressions, we separately assessed associations between MP on hospital day (HD)1, HD3, HD7 and clinical outcomes: hospital mortality, need for reintubation, tracheostomy placement, and development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Results: We included 1217 patients (mean age 51.2 years [SD 18.1], 66% male, mean body mass index [BMI] 26.3 [SD 5.18]) hospitalized at 62 intensive care units in 18 countries. Hospital mortality was 11% (n = 139), 44% (n = 536) were extubated by HD7 of which 20% (107/536) required reintubation, 28% (n = 340) underwent tracheostomy placement, and 9% (n = 114) developed ARDS. The median MP on HD1, HD3, and HD7 was 11.9 J/min [IQR 9.2–15.1], 13 J/min [IQR 10–17], and 14 J/min [IQR 11–20], respectively. MP was overall higher in patients with ARDS, especially those with higher ARDS severity. After controlling for same-day pressure of arterial oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen (P/F ratio), BMI, and neurological severity, MP at HD1, HD3, and HD7 was independently associated with hospital mortality, reintubation and tracheostomy placement. The adjusted relative risk (aRR) was greater at higher MP, and strongest for: mortality on HD1 (compared to the HD1 median MP 11.9 J/min, aRR at 17 J/min was 1.22, 95% CI 1.14–1.30) and HD3 (1.38, 95% CI 1.23–1.53), reintubation on HD1 (1.64; 95% CI 1.57–1.72), and tracheostomy on HD7 (1

Abstract: Background: In acute brain injury (ABI), the effects of hypoxemia as a potential cause of secondary brain damage and poor outcome are well documented, whereas the impact of hyperoxemia is unclear. The primary aim of this study was to assess the episodes of hypoxemia and hyperoxemia in patients with ABI during the intensive care unit (ICU) stay and to determine their association with in-hospital mortality. The secondary aim was to identify the optimal thresholds of arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) predicting in-hospital mortality. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective multicenter observational cohort study. Adult patients with ABI (traumatic brain injury, subarachnoid aneurysmal hemorrhage, intracranial hemorrhage, ischemic stroke) with available data on PaO2 during the ICU stay were included. Hypoxemia was defined as PaO2 < 80 mm Hg, normoxemia was defined as PaO2 between 80 and 120 mm Hg, mild/moderate hyperoxemia was defined as PaO2 between 121 and 299 mm Hg, and severe hyperoxemia was defined as PaO2 levels ≥ 300 mm Hg. Results: A total of 1,407 patients were included in this study. The mean age was 52 (±18) years, and 929 (66%) were male. Over the ICU stay, the fractions of patients in the study cohort who had at least one episode of hypoxemia, mild/moderate hyperoxemia, and severe hyperoxemia were 31.3%, 53.0%, and 1.7%, respectively. PaO2 values below 92 mm Hg and above 156 mm Hg were associated with an increased probability of in-hospital mortality. Differences were observed among subgroups of patients with ABI, with consistent effects only seen in patients without traumatic brain injury. Conclusions: In patients with ABI, hypoxemia and mild/moderate hyperoxemia were relatively frequent. Hypoxemia and hyperoxemia during ICU stay may influence in-hospital mortality. However, the small number of oxygen values collected represents a major limitation of the study.

10. Enzyme kinetics and electrochemical polymer transistor detection of enzyme reactions

Abstract: The aim of the research reported in this thesis is to adapt the polymer microelectrochemical transistor technology to in-vitro immunological detection. In-vitro immunological detection or immunoassay is a routine diagnostic tool in medicine. A wide variety of mono-specific antibodies can be obtained commercially with alkaline phosphatase attached as a label, consequently we describe a sensor offering a rapid detection (less than 60 s) of very low alkaline phosphatase concentrations (0 to 4 nM). We show how a poly(aniline) transistor may be switched from conductive to insulating by a redox enzyme. We show that this is still true when the polymer transistor is physically separated from the enzyme reaction in a chemical battery set-up. This set-up enabled us to use different pH conditions in both compartments of the battery like eletrochemical device. Our sensor retains the polymer transistor electrochemical properties in acid while alkaline conditions are used in cell B. Electron transfer reaction from p-aminophenol at pH 9 in cell B poly(aniline)-poly(vinylsulfonate) in 2M sulfuric acid (cell A) is obtained, resulting in a change of polymer potential and hence a change of polymer conductivity. Also we describe the fabrication of 70 similar polymer transistors designed for one off detection experiments. We present a detailed account of p-aminophenol electrochemical properties above pH 7.

Abstract: Purpose: Neurocritical care patients receive prolonged invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), but there is poor specific information in this high-risk population about the liberation strategies of invasive mechanical ventilation. Methods: ENIO (NCT03400904) is an international, prospective observational study, in 73 intensive care units (ICUs) in 18 countries from 2018 to 2020. Neurocritical care patients with a Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) ≤ 12, receiving IMV ≥ 24 h, undergoing extubation attempt or tracheostomy were included. The primary endpoint was extubation failure by day 5. An extubation success prediction score was created, with 2/3 of patients randomly allocated to the training cohort and 1/3 to the validation cohort. Secondary endpoints were the duration of IMV and in-ICU mortality. Results: 1512 patients were included. Among the 1193 (78.9%) patients who underwent an extubation attempt, 231 (19.4%) failures were recorded. The score for successful extubation prediction retained 20 variables as independent predictors. The area under the curve (AUC) in the training cohort was 0.79 95% confidence interval (CI95) [0.71–0.87] and 0.71 CI95 [0.61–0.81] in the validation cohort. Patients with extubation failure displayed a longer IMV duration (14 [7–21] vs 6 [3–11] days) and a higher in-ICU mortality rate (8.7% vs 2.4%). Three hundred and nineteen (21.1%) patients underwent tracheostomy without extubation attempt. Patients with direct tracheostomy displayed a longer duration of IMV and higher in-ICU mortality than patients with an extubation attempt (success and failure). Conclusions: In neurocritical care patients, extubation failure is high and is associated with unfavourable outcomes. A score could predict extubation success in multiple settings. However, it will be mandatory to validate our findings in another prospective independent cohort.

12. Control de plantas renovables híbridas

Abstract: Un aspecto de vital importancia en la lucha contra el cambio climático es reducir la emisiones de CO2 provenientes del sector de generación de energía eléctrica. En este respecto, las energías renovables son la clave de la transición del sector. Las plantas que combinen dos o más de estas tecnologías estarán cada vez más presentes, y en este proyecto se estudiará una de estas nuevas plantas de generación renovable híbrida, combinando generación eólica y solar fotovoltaica en este caso. El mayor reto que suponen estas plantas es el control de las mismas, debido a la naturaleza cambiante de sus recursos energéticos y de la complicación extra que supone el combinarlas. Este ha sido el objeto de estudio principal de este proyecto. Primeramente, se ha desarrollado un modelo en el entorno de Matlab/Simulink que representa la planta híbrida a estudiar, modelando las turbinas eólicas, los inversores de fotovoltaica y la red eléctrica a la que se conectan. Posteriormente, se ha modelado un Power Plant Controller (PPC) basado en un controlador proporcional-integral, capaz de controlar en lazo cerrado la potencia activa y reactiva de la planta, además de contar con un modo de control de frecuencia. Finalmente, se han planteado tres casos con distintos escenarios de control. El primero de ellos cuenta con un único PPC que controla únicamente la generación de energía fotovoltaica, mientras la generación eólica se deja operando a máxima potencia en todo momento. En el segundo caso se añade un nuevo PPC que controle la generación eólica, teniendo en este caso dos PPCs independientes. En el tercer y último caso planteado se añade un tercer PPC a la planta; pero en este caso se trata de un PPC maestro que opera sobre las consignas que deben seguir de los otros dos controladores, convirtiéndolos así es PPCs esclavos. Por último, se han extraído unas conclusiones de estos casos y se ha establecido si son escenarios de control recomendables o no y bajo qué circunstancias, A critical aspect in the fight against climate change is to reduce the CO2 gas emissions produced by the power generation sector. In this regard, renewable energies will hold the key of the sector’s transformation. Power plants combining two or more of this technologies will be increasingly present in the future, and in this project one of this new hybrid renewable power plants will be studied, combining wind and photovoltaic power. The biggest challenge this plants present is their control, due to the changing nature of the energy resource the relay on and the difficulty of combining both technologies. This has been the main subject of study of this project. Firstly, a model has been developed in the Matlab/Simulink enviroment representing the hybrid power plant under study. Wind turbines, photovoltaic inverters and the electrical grid have been modelled. Secondly, a Power Plant Controller (PPC) has been modelled based on a proportional-integral controller, being able to control both active and reactive power in close loop. Aside from that, it also has a frequency control mode. Finally, three case studies have been presented with different control scenarios. In the first one there is a single PPC controlling only the photovoltaic power generation, leaving the wind power generation always at it´s máximum. In the second scenario a second PPC has been added to control the wind power generation, having in this case two independent PPCs. In the third and last case, another PPC has been added to operate on the setpoints the other two PPCs receive, making it a master PPC and the other two slave PPCs. Lastly, some conclusions have been extracted from this three cases, defining it´s control scenarios as more or less suitable in each circumstance, Un aspecte de vital importància en la lluita contra el canvi climàtic és reduir l'emissions de CO2 provinents del sector de generació d'energia elèctrica. El major repte que suposen aquestes plantes és el control d'aquestes, a causa de la naturalesa canviant dels seus recursos energètics i de la complicació extra que suposa el combinar-les. Aquest ha estat l'objecte d'estudi principal d'aquest projecte. Primerament, s'ha desenvolupat un model a l'entorn de Matlab/Simulink que representa la planta híbrida a estudiar, modelant les turbines eòliques, els inversors de fotovoltaica i la xarxa elèctrica a la qual es connecten. Abstract: PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is the ESA M3 space mission dedicated to detect and characterise transiting exoplanets including information from the asteroseismic properties of their stellar hosts. The uninterrupted and high-precision photometry provided by space-borne instruments such as PLATO require long preparatory phases. An exhaustive list of tests are paramount to design a mission that meets the performance requirements, and as such, simulations are an indispensable tool in the mission preparation. To accommodate PLATO's need of versatile simulations prior to mission launch - that at the same time describe accurately the innovative but complex multi-telescope design - we here present the end-to-end PLATO simulator specifically developed for the purpose, namely PlatoSim. We show step-by-step the algorithms embedded into the software architecture of PlatoSim that allow the user to simulate photometric time series of CCD images and light curves in accordance to the expected observations of PLATO. In the context of the PLATO payload, a general formalism of modelling, end-to-end, incoming photons from the sky to the final measurement in digital units is discussed. We show the strong predictive power of PlatoSim through its diverse applicability and contribution to numerous working groups within the PLATO Mission Consortium. This involves the on-going mechanical integration and alignment, performance studies of the payload, the pipeline development and assessments of the scientific goals. PlatoSim is a state-of-the-art simulator that is able to produce the expected photometric observations of PLATO to a high level of accuracy. We demonstrate that PlatoSim is a key software tool for the PLATO mission in the preparatory phases until mission launch and prospectively beyond., Comment: 30 pages, 22 figures

14. Correction of the brighter-fatter effect on the CCDs of Hyper Suprime-Cam

Abstract: The brighter-fatter effect affects all CCD sensors to various degrees. Deep-depleted thick sensors are seriously affected and the measurement of galaxy shapes for cosmic shear measurements requires an accurate correction of the effect in science images. We describe the whole correction chain we have implemented for the CCDs of the Hyper Suprime-Cam imager on the Subaru Telescope. We derive non linearity corrections from a new sequence of flat field images, and measure their statistics, namely their two-pixel function. We constrain an electrostatic model from flat field statistics that we use to correct science images. We find evidence that some fraction of the observed variance and some covariances is not due to the combination of Poisson statistics and electrostatics -- and the cause remains elusive. We then have to ignore some measurements when deriving the electrostatic model. Over a wide range of image qualities and in the 5 bands of the imager, stars in corrected science images exhibit size variations with flux small enough to predict the point spread function for faint objects to an accuracy better than $10^{-3}$ for the trace of second moments -- and even better for the ellipticity and the fourth radial moment. 15. Aspects of the growth and health of the suckling and weanling infant in Ethiopia

Abstract: This thesis examines inter-relationships between the feeding, health, and growth of infants (aged 0-24 months) in low-income households in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mixed-longitudinal data were collected from a sample of 113 infants and their mothers in Kebele 11, Keftegna 24 from November 1987 to April 1988. Breastfeeding is the culturally esteemed mode of infant feeding. The culture-specific concept of weaning places the emphasis on the termination of breastfeeding, with little consideration of the quality and quantity of weaning foods. As a result, weaning foods are basic and monotonous. Survival data analysis shows that weaning is commenced at the mean age of 9.2 months, and completed at the median age of 20 months. A probabilistic model is proposed that includes a set of inter-related 'infant-centred', 'mother-centred', and other factors such as the seasonal availability of weaning foods influencing the process of weaning. Culturally-prescribed norms appear to play little or no part in the timing of weaning, in particular, the infant's age is of secondary importance. Direct observations of suckling behaviour and infant care reveal that 'on demand' breastfeeding was practised, and the mean duration of suckling sessions was 10.96 minutes. The duration of breastfeeding was influenced significantly by maternal body-mass index. Seasonal patterns were detected in the prevalence of fever, coughing, and vomiting in the infants. Associations between morbidity and other data using log-linear models suggest that infant's diarrhoea is closely linked to the level of household hygiene, maternal education, and mother's morale. Infant's ilnesses caused appreciable deficits in weight, but not in stature. Processes of 'catch-up' and 'catch-down' growth are demonstrated by the seasonal effect of diarrhoeal illness on weight. Avenues for further research and policy reform suggested by the findings of this study are discussed.

Abstract: Understanding and controlling the orbital alignment of molecules placed between electrodes is essential in the design of practically-applicable molecular and nanoscale electronic devices. The orbital alignment is highly determined by the molecule-electrode interface. Dependence of orbital alignment on the molecular anchor group for single molecular junctions has been intensively studied; however, when scaling-up single molecules to large parallel molecular arrays (like self-assembled monolayers (SAMs)), two challenges need to be addressed: 1. Most desired anchor groups do not form high quality SAMs. 2. It is much harder to tune the frontier molecular orbitals via a gate voltage in SAM junctions than in single molecular junctions. In this work, we studied the effect of the molecule-electrode interface in SAMs with a micro-pore device, using a recently developed tetrapodal anchor to overcome challenge 1, and the combination of a single layered graphene top electrode with an ionic liquid gate to solve challenge 2. The zero-bias orbital alignment of different molecules was signalled by a shift in conductance minimum vs. gate voltage for molecules with different anchoring groups. Molecules with the same backbone, but a different molecule-electrode interface, were shown experimentally to have conductances that differ by a factor of 5 near zero bias. Theoretical calculations using density functional theory support the trends observed in the experimental data. This work sheds light on how to control electron transport within the HOMO-LUMO energy gap in molecular junctions and will be applicable in scaling up molecular electronic systems for future device applications.

Abstract: The day-to-day work of primary care (PC) was substantially changed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Teaching practices needed to adapt both clinical work and teaching in a way that enabled the teaching process to continue, while maintaining safe and high-quality care. Our study aims to investigate the effect of being a training practice on a number of different outcomes related to the safety culture of PC practices. PRICOV-19 is a multi-country cross-sectional study that researches how PC practices were organized in 38 countries during the pandemic. Data was collected from November 2020 to December 2021. We categorized practices into training and non-training and selected outcomes relating to safety culture: safe practice management, community outreach, professional well-being and adherence to protocols. Mixed-effects regression models were built to analyze the effect of being a training practice for each of the outcomes, while controlling for relevant confounders. Of the participating practices, 2886 (56%) were non-training practices and 2272 (44%) were training practices. Being a training practice was significantly associated with a lower risk for adverse mental health events (OR: 0.83; CI: 0.70–0.99), a higher number of safety measures related to patient flow (Beta: 0.17; CI: 0.07–0.28), a higher number of safety incidents reported (RR: 1.12; CI: 1.06–1.19) and more protected time for meetings (Beta: 0.08; CI: 0.01–0.15). No significant associations were found for outreach initiatives, availability of triage information, use of a phone protocol or infection prevention measures and equipment availability. Training practices were found to have a stronger safety culture than non-training practices. These results have important policy implications, since involving more PC practices in education may be an effective way to improve quality and safety in general practice.

Afin de servir de porte d’entrée sur les discours et pratiques des agents de terrain, je m’intéresse aux opérations de catégorisation des bénéficiaires par les travailleurs sociaux au fil du suivi. En particulier, j’interroge la centralité de la notion « d’employabilité » dans les décisions d’orientation des bénéficiaires vers les services d’insertion socioprofessionnelle et sociale et au sein de ceux-ci. A partir de la comparaison de deux études de cas ethnographiques réalisées dans un CPAS wallon et dans un CPAS bruxellois, cette thèse montre que la mise en œuvre en de l’activation dans ces CPAS est principalement capacitante, ce qui résulte d’une vision du rôle des travailleurs sociaux structurée par un rejet des dimensions disciplinantes de l’activation et par une définition de l’employabilité comme collective. De plus, elle montre la possibilité d’une déconnexion des notions d’employabilité, d’insertion et d’activation dans le savoir pratiques des agents d’insertion. Abstract: Two new excited bands built on the πh11/2 configuration have been identified in ¹³⁵Nd in addition to the known πh11/2 band. The energy spectra of the excited bands and the available electromagnetic transition probabilities are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations. The properties of the bands identify them as tilted precession bands instead of wobbling bands. Our results give a new insight into the interpretation of the low-lying bands in odd-A mass nuclei, and can stimulate future studies to address the nuclear triaxiality.

Abstract: A gamma-ray spectroscopic study of Po-212 was performed at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds, using the inverse kinematics alpha-transfer reaction C-12(Pb-208, Po-212) Be-8 and the AGATA spectrometer. A careful analysis based on gamma gamma coincidence relations allowed us to establish 14 new excited states in the energy range between 1.9 and 3.3 MeV. None of these states, however, can be considered as candidates for the levels with spins and parities of 1(-) and 2(-) and excitation energies below 2.1 MeV, which have been predicted by recent alpha-cluster model calculations. A systematic comparison of the experimentally established excitation scheme of Po-212 with shell-model calculations was performed. This comparison suggests that the six states with excitation energies (spins and parities) of 1744 (4(-)), 1751 (8(-)), 1787 (6(-)), 1946 (4(-)), 1986 (8(-)), and 2016 (6(-)) keV, which previously were interpreted as alpha-cluster states, may in fact be of positive parity and belong to low-lying shell-model multiplets. This reinterpretation of the structure of Po-212 is supported by experimental information with respect to the linear polarization of gamma rays, which suggests a magnetic character of the 432-keV gamma ray decaying from the state at an excitation energy of 1787 keV to the 6(1)(+) yrast state, and exclusive reaction cross sections.

Abstract: The Radio and Plasma Waves (RPW) instrument on the ESA Solar Orbiter mission is designed to measure in situ magnetic and electric fields and waves from the continuum up to several hundred kHz. The RPW also observes solar and heliospheric radio emissions up to 16 MHz. It was switched on and its antennae were successfully deployed two days after the launch of Solar Orbiter on February 10, 2020. Since then, the instrument has acquired enough data to make it possible to assess its performance and the electromagnetic disturbances it experiences. In this article, we assess its scientific performance and present the first RPW observations. In particular, we focus on a statistical analysis of the first observations of interplanetary dust by the instrument's Thermal Noise Receiver. We also review the electro-magnetic disturbances that RPW suffers, especially those which potential users of the instrument data should be aware of before starting their research work.

Abstract: We study astrometric residuals from a simultaneous fit of Hyper Suprime-Cam images. We aim to characterize these residuals and study the extent to which they are dominated by atmospheric contributions for bright sources. We use Gaussian process interpolation, with a correlation function (kernel), measured from the data, to smooth and correct the observed astrometric residual field. We find that Gaussian process interpolation with a von K\'arm\'an kernel allows us to reduce the covariances of astrometric residuals for nearby sources by about one order of magnitude, from 30 mas$^2$ to 3 mas$^2$ at angular scales of ~1 arcmin, and to halve the r.m.s. residuals. Those reductions using Gaussian process interpolation are similar to recent result published with the Dark Energy Survey dataset. We are then able to detect the small static astrometric residuals due to the Hyper Suprime-Cam sensors effects. We discuss how the Gaussian process interpolation of astrometric residuals impacts galaxy shape measurements, in particular in the context of cosmic shear analyses at the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time.

Abstract: Background: Reducing incidents related to health care interventions to improve patient safety is a health policy priority. To strengthen a culture of safety, reporting incidents is essential. This study aims to define a patient safety risk map using the description and analysis of incidents within a primary care region with a prior patient safety improvement strategy organisationally developed and promoted. Methods: The study will be conducted in two phases: (1) a cross-sectional descriptive observational study to describe reported incidents; and (2) a quasi-experimental study to compare reported incidents. The study will take place in the Camp de Tarragona Primary Care Management (Catalan Institute of Health). In Phase 1, all reactive notifications collected within one year (2018) will be analysed; during Phase 2, all proactive notifications of the second and third weeks of June 2019 will be analysed. Adverse events will also be assessed. Phases 1 and 2 will use a digital platform and the proactive tool proSP to notify and analyse incidents related to patient safety. Expected Results: To obtain an up-to-date, primary care patient safety risk map to prioritise strategies that result in safer practices.

L’originalité de ce volume est de réunir plus d’une demi-douzaine de spécialistes de l’ethnocritique et de la sociocritique autour d’un pré commun théorique –les hypothèses de Bakhtine sur le dialogisme de la littérature– et d’un objet d’étude exclusif, la poésie. De cette dernière, les articles de ce volume se donnent pour but de lire la polyphonie culturelle et la socialité d’un genre injustement considéré comme celui d’une écriture close sur elle-même dont la recherche formelle ou l’expérience de l’intime supposerait une mise à distance de tout lien social.

Abstract: Three nearly degenerate pairs of doublet bands are identified in Ba-131. Two of them, with positive-parity, are interpreted as pseudospin-chiral quartet bands. This is the first time that a complete set of chiral doublet bands built on the pseudospin partners pi(d(5/2), g(7/2)) is observed. The chiral bands with opposite parity built on 3-quasiparticle configurations are directly connected by many E1 transitions, without involving an intermediary non-chiral configuration. The observed band structures in Ba-131 have been investigated by using the reflection-asymmetric particle rotor model. The energies and the electromagnetic transition ratios of the three pairs of doublet bands observed in Ba-131 are reproduced and they are interpreted as chiral doublet bands with three-quasiparticle configurations. Abstract: Type Ia Supernovae have yet again the opportunity to revolutionize the field of cosmology as the new generation of surveys are acquiring thousands of nearby SNeIa opening a new era in cosmology: the direct measurement of the growth of structure parametrized by $fD$. This method is based on the SNeIa peculiar velocities derived from the residual to the Hubble law as direct tracers of the full gravitational potential caused by large scale structure. With this technique, we could probe not only the properties of dark energy, but also the laws of gravity. In this paper we present the analytical framework and forecasts. We show that ZTF and LSST will be able to reach 5\% precision on $fD$ by 2027. Our analysis is not significantly sensitive to photo-typing, but known selection functions and spectroscopic redshifts are mandatory. We finally introduce an idea of a dedicated spectrograph that would get all the required information in addition to boost the efficiency to each SNeIa so that we could reach the 5\% precision within the first two years of LSST operation and the few percent level by the end of the survey., Comment: White paper CNRS/IN2P3 Prospectives 2020

Abstract: To avoid crosstalk and suppress leakage currents in resistive random access memories (RRAMs), a resistive switch and a current rectifier (diode) are usually combined in series in a one diode–one resistor (1D–1R) RRAM. However, this complicates the design of next-generation RRAM, increases the footprint of devices and increases the operating voltage as the potential drops over two consecutive junctions1. Here, we report a molecular tunnel junction based on molecules that provide an unprecedented dual functionality of diode and variable resistor, resulting in a molecular-scale 1D–1R RRAM with a current rectification ratio of 2.5 × 104 and resistive on/off ratio of 6.7 × 103, and a low drive voltage of 0.89 V. The switching relies on dimerization of redox units, resulting in hybridization of molecular orbitals accompanied by directional ion migration. This electric-field-driven molecular switch operating in the tunnelling regime enables a class of molecular devices where multiple electronic functions are preprogrammed inside a single molecular layer with a thickness of only 2 nm.

Abstract: Milpa is an integrated agricultural system were maize (Zea mays L.), bean (Phaseolus spp.), and pumpkin (Cucurbita spp.) are associated; is the most crucial system of food for self-consumption for rural families in México. The objective of this study was to evaluate sustainability in milpa agroecosystems in one rural community of Sierra Norte of Oaxaca. The study was conducted in 12 milpa parcells, which were divided in two different groups given their management practices, and their respective family units. Based on the methodology for evaluating natural resource management systems incorporating indicators of sustainability (MESMIS), 15sustainability indicators were measured through a survey application. Agroecosystems were regrouped through a multivariate analysis using a Rcmdr program from the free software R. Indicators were converted to a normalized scale from 0 to 100 through the reference interval method. Multivariate analysis reclassified agroecosystems in three conglomerates, which were mainly differentiated by the cost-benefit indicator, and distinguished two atypical cases. Sustainability reaches agroecosystems thanks to higher values of biodiversity and soil organic matter indicators and lower values of chemical inputs and governmental dependency indicators. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la sustentabilidad de agroecosistemas de milpa en una comunidad de la Sierra Norte de Oaxaca. La evaluación se realizó en 12 parcelas de milpa, divididas en dos grupos de contraste por sus prácticas de manejo, y sus respectivas unidades familiares. Con base en la metodología Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Incorporando Indicadores de Sustentabilidad (MESMIS) se seleccionaron 15 indicadores de sustentabilidad que se midieron a través de una encuesta, principalmente. Los agroecosistemas se reagruparon mediante un análisis multivariado realizado con la paquetería Rcmdr del software libre R. Los indicadores se transformaron a una escala estandarizada de 0 a 100 mediante el método de intervalo de referencia. El análisis multivariado reclasificó a los agroecosistemas en tres conglomerados, que se diferenciaron principalmente por el indicador relación beneficio-costo neta, y distinguió dos casos atípicos. Los elementos que le dotan de mayor sustentabilidad a los agroecosistemas evaluados son la biodiversidad agrícola y circundante, el contenido de materia orgánica del suelo, y la baja dependencia de insumos químicos y apoyos gubernamentales. No obstante, la sustentabilidad de estos sistemas se ve amenazada por la variabilidad climática y por la incertidumbre del relevo generacional.

Abstract: Two new bands have been identified in 137Nd from a high-statistics JUROGAM II gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment. Constrained density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations are used to assign configurations and investigate the band properties, which are well described and understood. It is demonstrated that these two new bands can be interpreted as chiral partners of previously known three-quasiparticle positive- and negative-parity bands. The newly observed chiral doublet bands in 137Nd represent an important support to the existence of multiple chiral bands in nuclei. The present results constitute the missing stone in the series of Nd nuclei showing multiple chiral bands, which becomes the most extended sequence of odd–even and even-even nuclei presenting multiple chiral bands in the Segré chart., QC 20220614

Abstract: Experimental signatures of moderately enhanced octupole correlations at high spin in Nd136 are indicated for the first time. The extracted dipole moments of two negative-parity bands are only two times smaller than those of the lanthanide nuclei with N≈90 which present well-established octupole correlations. Abstract: Experimental signatures of moderately enhanced octupole correlations at high spin in ¹³⁶Nd are indicated for the first time. The extracted dipole moments of two negative-parity bands are only two times smaller than those of the lanthanide nuclei with N≈90 which present well-established octupole correlations. Calculations using the cranked quasiparticle random phase approximation and a model of quadrupole-octupole rotations with octupole vibrations reveal the structure of the bands and the enhanced octupole correlations at high spin in ¹³⁶Nd.

37. Power and the Pandemic: Exploring Global Changes in Electricity Demand During COVID-19

Abstract: Understanding how efforts to limit exposure to COVID-19 have altered electricity demand provides insights not only into how dramatic restrictions shape electricity demand but also about future electricity use in a post-COVID-19 world. We develop a unified modeling framework to quantify and compare electricity usage changes in 58 countries and regions around the world from January-May 2020. We find that daily electricity demand declined as much as 10% in April 2020 compared to modelled demand, controlling for weather, seasonal and temporal effects, but with significant variation. Clustering techniques show that four impact groups capture systematic differences in timing and depth of electricity usage changes, ranging from a mild decline of 2% to an extreme decline of 26%. These groupings do not align with geography, with almost every continent having at least one country or region that experienced a dramatic reduction in demand and one that did not. Instead, we find that such changes relate to government restrictions and mobility. Government restrictions have a non-linear effect on demand that generally saturates at its most restrictive levels and sustains even as restrictions ease. Mobility offers a sharper focus on electricity demand change with workplace and residential mobility strongly linked to demand changes at the daily level. Steep declines in electricity usage are associated with workday hourly load patterns that resemble pre-COVID weekend usage. Quantifying these impacts is a crucial first step in understanding the impacts of crises like the pandemic and the associated societal response on electricity demand.

Abstract: One new pair of positive-parity chiral doublet bands have been identified in the odd-A nucleus 135Nd which together with the previously reported negative-parity chiral doublet bands constitute a third case of multiple chiral doublet (MχD) bands in the A≈130 mass region. The properties of the MχD bands are well reproduced by constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. The newly observed MχD bands in 135Nd represents an important milestone in supporting the existence of MχD in nuclei.

Abstract: A sequence of nine almost equidistant quadrupole transitions is observed in Nd-137. The sequence represents an extremely regular rotational band that extends to a spin of about 75/2 and an excitation energy of approximate to 4.5 MeV above yrast. Cranked mean-field calculations of the Nilsson-Strutinsky type suggest an oblate shape for the band. They reproduce the observed I(I +1) dependence of the rotational energy whereas predicting a pronounced decrease in the deformation, which is the hallmark of antimagnetic rotation., QC 20190426

Abstract: We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the solar system, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a large, wide-field ground-based system designed to obtain repeated images covering the sky visible from Cerro Pachón in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg 2 field of view, a 3.2-gigapixel camera, and six filters (ugrizy) covering the wavelength range 320-1050 nm. The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. About 90% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode that will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg 2 region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 yr of operations and will yield a co-added map to r ∼27.5. These data will result in databases including about 32 trillion observations of 20 billion galaxies and a similar number of stars, and they will serve the majority of the primary science programs. The remaining 10% of the observing time will be allocated to special projects such as Very Deep and Very Fast time domain surveys, whose details are currently under discussion. We illustrate how the LSST science drivers led to these choices of system parameters, and we describe the expected data products and their characteristics.

Abstract: The Photon Transfer Curve (PTC) of a CCD depicts the variance of uniform images as a function of their average. It is now well established that the variance is not proportional to the average, as Poisson statistics would indicate, but rather flattens out at high flux. This "variance deficit", related to the brighter-fatter effect, feeds correlations between nearby pixels, that increase with flux, and decay with distance. We propose an analytical expression for the PTC shape, and for the dependence of correlations with intensity, and relate both to some more basic quantities related to the electrostatics of the sensor, that are commonly used to correct science images for the brighter-fatter effect. We derive electrostatic constraints from a large set of flat field images acquired with a CCD e2v 250, and eventually question the generally-admitted assumption that boundaries of CCD pixels shift by amounts proportional to the source charges. Our results show that the departure of flat field statistics from Poisson law is entirely compatible with charge redistribution during the drift in the sensor., Comment: 16 pages. Abstract: The half-life of the 4(2)(+) state of the 2p-2h proton intruder band of Sn-116 has been measured with the fast- timing technique. The lifetime of T-1/2 = 29(10) ps leads to a transition probability B(E2; 4(2)(+) -> 2(2)(+)) = 40(13) Weisskopf units, which is in very good agreement with the large B(E2; 2(2)(+) -> 0(3)(+)) value measured previously and provides strong support for the 0(3)(+) state as the bandhead of the intruder configuration and for the shape coexistence in the semimagic Sn-116 nucleus. IBM-2 calculations with mixing reproduce the experimental data very well, giving insight into the degree of mixing between the different states.

Abstract: This paper concerns a ground penetrating radar system (GPR) presenting beam forming ability. This ability is due to a great flexibility in the emission of wavefronts. The innovative concept is to use an array of antennas which can reconfigure itself dynamically, in order to focus on a desired target. This antennas system can act as a new microwave sensor to detect and characterize buried targets in an inhomogeneous medium which is the case study in various application fields such as geophysics, medical, planetology… Its electronics are in development with the DORT (Time reversal technique) method integration for optimizing the localization of buried target. This paper aims are to present the antenna optimization used in the GPR applications. Typical antennas used in GPR are generally Vivaldi ones directly on the ground. Especially, in the context of the space mission ExoMars 2020, the radar antenna is set on a mobile station at a distance of about 30 cm from the ground to avoid any contact. However, they are limited by their important size, due to the lowest frequency of their bandwidth. Results of this work concern an increase of the antenna bandwidth by shifting the lower-band limit, making it a UWB type [500 MHz - 4 GHz] without changing its size. As low frequency waves can spread deeper into probed medium, this optimization can improve the radar data inversion performances.

Abstract: High-redshift type Ia supernovae are crucial for constraining any time variation in dark energy. Here, we present the first discoveries and light curves from the SUbaru Supernovae with Hubble Infrared (SUSHI) program, which combines high-redshift SN discoveries from the Subaru Strategic Program (SSP, as well as other Subaru time) with HST WFC3 IR followup. This program efficiently uses the wide field and high collecting area of Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam for optical light curves, but still obtains a precision NIR color. We are on track to double the number of well-measured SNe Ia at z > 1.1, triggering on 23 SNe Ia in our first season.

Abstract: The level structure of ¹³⁶Nd has been investigated using the ¹⁰⁰Mo(⁴⁰Ar, 4n) reaction and the JUROGAM II+RITU+GREAT setup. The level scheme has been extended significantly. Many new bands have been identified both at low and high spin, among which are five nearly degenerate bands interpreted as chiral partners. Excitation energies, spins, and parities of the previously known bands are revised and firmly established, and some previously known bands have been revised. Configurations are assigned to the observed bands based on cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The band structure of ¹³⁶Nd is now clarified and the various types of single-particle and collective excitations are well understood.

Abstract: Evidence for chiral doublet bands has been observed for the first time in the even-even nucleus Nd136. One chiral band was firmly established. Four other candidates for chiral bands were also identified, which can contribute to the realization of the multiple pairs of chiral doublet bands (MχD) phenomenon. The observed bands are investigated by the constrained and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory (TAC-CDFT). Possible configurations have been explored. The experimental energy spectra, angular momenta, and B(M1)/B(E2) values for the assigned configurations are globally reproduced by TAC-CDFT. Calculated results support the chiral interpretation of the observed bands, which correspond to shapes with maximum triaxiality induced by different multiquasiparticle configurations in Nd136., QC 20180605
