In this paper, we introduce the notion of beaver-play to understand play that challenges spatial conventions, transgresses boundaries, and redraws territories. Tracing how beavers are imagined in various contexts such as nature conservation, experimental rewilding practices, and performance art, we highlight the role of the beaver in stories of ecosystem management, collapse, and restoration. We investigate beaver imaginaries through the perspective of play and games, taking the popular city-building video game Timberborn as our case study. We employ sketching as a method to annotate and analyse play practices in the digital spaces of Timberborn, drawing out three modes of beaver-play: concerns, crossings, and flows. Highlighting the role of play in territorial and organisational fluidity, we draw attention to the way that beaver-play scaffolds moving in and out of spatial arrangements, territories and environmental systems. Discussing how the practices of playing and drawing intertwined into a process of more-than-human cartography, we extend our investigation to consider the broader implications of using video games as cartographic, performative spaces for more-than-human meaning-making.

Just under 50,000 fingerling Bonneville cutthroat were stocked into many streams along the Wasatch Front last week. Reintroduced beavers also helped restore fish and wildlife habitat at some remote streams, allowing biologists to reintroduce cutthroat trout into these newly-created beaver ponds. Many other species will benefit from these restoration efforts as well. Thanks to the many conservation partners that assisted with this beaver reintroduction project, such as the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Safari Club International - SCI, Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife, Sageland Collaborative - Formerly Wild Utah Project and the U.S. Forest Service.

This unique technique was actually conceptualized right here in Utah and decreases erosion, raises river levels and even improves water quality!

Changing climate conditions can make water management planning and drought preparedness decisions more complicated than ever before. Federal and State natural resource managers can no longer rely solely on historical trends as a baseline and thus are in need of science that is relevant to their specific needs to inform important planning decisions. Questions remain, however, regarding the most effective and efficient methods for extending scientific knowledge and products into management and decision-making. This project analyzed two unique cases of water management to better understand how science can be translated into resource management actions and decision-making, focusing particularly on how the context of how drought influences ecosystems. In particular, this project sought to understand (1) the characteristics that make science actionable and useful for water resource management and drought preparedness, and (2) the ideal types of scientific knowledge or science products that facilitate the use of science in management and decision making. The first case study focused on beaver mimicry, an emerging nature-based solution that increases the presence of wood and woody debris in rivers and streams to mimic the actions of beavers. This technique has been rapidly adopted by natural resource managers as a way to restore riparian areas, reconnect incised streams with their floodplains, increase groundwater infiltration, and slow surface water flow so that more water is available later in the year during hotter and drier months (Pollock and others 2015). The second case study focused on an established research program, Colorado Dust on Snow, that provides water managers with scientific information explaining how the movement of dust particles from the Colorado Plateau influences hydrology and the timing and intensity of snow melt and water runoff into critical water sources. Recent studies show an increase in the population of beavers, nutria and other rodents in vast regions of central Europe over the last 15 years. Unfortunately, this caused in many instances considerable damage on large rivers along dykes and earthworks in the floodplain areas, leading to an increased risk of bank failures. However, most of these mammals belong to protected species. This work is aimed at showing positive experience in cooperation with universities, research institutes and environmental agencies regarding measures to permanently safeguard the banks using composite erosion control systems with polymer coated steel wire net (as flexible reinforcement component) and a geosynthetic (to promote vegetation growth). The steel mesh component works as an effective long-term barrier against the intrusion of mammals, discouraging them from digging inside the core of the dyke. An analysis of the sensitive areas to be protected led also to definition of the characteristics of these interventions (length, shape, escape ways, population areas, etc.). The study will present several additional benefits when using polymer steel nets along dykes, such as: high and durable erosion protection in overflow areas, promotion of fast and effective vegetation growth (increasing stability), surface protection against ice impacts (in northern regions), ease of installation, maintenance, ability to conform to irregular shapes of the slope. This work will also present the positive outcome of research studies along dykes in Germany, Austria and in Italy.

The use of forest roads as foundations for dam construction by beavers is a recurrent problem in the management of forest road networks. In order to limit the damage to forest roads, our goal was to calculate the probability of beaver dam installation on culverts, according to surrounding habitat parameters, which could allow for improvement in the spatial design of new roads that minimise conflicts with beavers. Comparisons of culverts with (n = 77) and without (n = 51) dams in northwestern Quebec showed that catchment surface, cumulate length of all local streams within a 2-km radius, and road embankment height had a negative effect on the probability of dam construction on culverts, while flow level and culvert diameter ratio had a positive effect. Nevertheless, predicted probabilities of dam construction on culverts generally exceeded 50%, even on sites that were less favourable to beavers. We suggest that it would be more reasonable to take their probable subsequent presence into account at the earliest steps of road conception. Installing mitigation measures such as pre-dams during road construction would probably reduce the occurrence of conflicts with beavers and thus reduce the maintenance costs of forest roads.

The bobcat rules biologists are recommending are identical to last season. Each trapper and hunter would be limited to not more than six permits. Utah's bobcat hunting and trapping season would run from Nov. 18, 2015 to Feb. 7, 2016. During the 2014–2015 season, trappers and hunters took a total of 2,919 bobcats in Utah.

Utah State University researchers study Beaver Dams's effects on habitat restoration and the possibility of utilizing Beaver Dams as an alternative to man-made dams.

As beaver return to North Carolina, their role as ecosystem engineer is becoming more apparent. In this study, I examine variables related to beaver dam construction and ponding to look for relationships that may provide insight into the long term impacts of beaver in modifying stream channel forms. Dam construction and other physical features created by continued beaver activity are studied to provide a matrix of variables, which are analyzed to determine correlations between these features. Log-linear regression indicates that several variables do have significant relationships, and form a web of relationships that have potential impacts for understanding biotic influences on stream channel evolution, stream restoration, and beaver mitigation in North Carolina.

[EN] The use ot teeth, both from human and other animals, as instruments for working other raw materials has a wide record at archaeological and ethnographical level. The case study of the present work -the incisive teeth of beaver- is very interesting for the wide geographical territory envolved as well as for the ample chronological interval that relates to the technological development of these tools. The experi-mental work that has been carried out with beaver mandibles had the aim of reproducing the teeth use wear so to be able to utilise this set as a referente collection to compare with archaeological material from Zaostje 2 (Russia). These tools are very common in this area of the Russian plain in all settlements were there are Mesolothic cultural layers overlain by Neolithic deposits., [ES] El uso de los dientes, tanto humanos como de diversos animales, como instrumentos de trabajo tiene un amplio registro tanto a nivel arqueológico como etnográfico. El caso que nos ocupa en este trabajo -los incisivos de castor- resulta llamativo por el amplio territorio geográfi co donde se localizan y el amplio espectro cronológico que ocupa el desarrollo tecnológico de esos instrumentos. La experimentación que hemos llevado a cabo con mandíbulas de castor tenía como objetivo el reproducir huellas de uso en la superfi cie de los incisivos para usarlas de modelos comparativos con los materiales arqueológicos de Zamostje 2 (Rusia). Estos instrumentos son muy comunes en los yacimientos con niveles mesolíticos (con continuidad en los del neolítico) en todo este área geográfi ca de la llanura rusa.

The goal of the Utah Beaver Management Plan is to maintain healthy, functional beaver populations in ecological balance with available habitat, human needs, and associated species. The purpose of the Utah Beaver Management Plan is to provide direction for management of American beaver (Castor canadensis) in Utah and where appropriate expand the current distribution to historic range. This purpose is in accordance with the mission statement of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR). The mission of UDWR is: To serve the people of Utah as trustee and guardian of the state's wildlife The Beaver Management Plan will direct beaver management statewide for a period of ten years (2010-2020). During 2020, this document will be reviewed, management progress will be evaluated and an updated management plan will be written and presented to the Utah Wildlife Board for approval.

Utah's beaver populations have recovered since the days when they were trapped by mountain men. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has drafted a new management plan that outlines how beavers play a role in habitat restoration.

Tookwee’nup, legends, are Paiute stories told during the winter months. They are mythical, often humorous, and they contain a moral. Tookwee’nup teach Paiute children why things are like they are. The stories give spiritual instruction and expose the children to human characteristics that we all possess. This Paiute booklet is part of the Native American Indian Literacy Project storybook series for the six main Utah Tribal Nations. The project was led by Shirlee A. Silversmith, American Indian education specialist for the Utah State Office of Education. There are five stories per Tribe, with a total of 30 booklets, plus an ABC book. The set of Indian Tribal stories may be utilized by elementary classroom teachers to (1) develop an understanding and appreciation of Native American culture and societal contributions (2) provide a genre of text for the application of reading strategies, and (3) facilitate the mastery of various Utah Core Content Curriculum objectives. The Native American Indian Literacy Project was made possible by funds from the Utah State Office of Education (USOE). It is a joint effort of the USOE and San Juan School District Media Center.

The Zamostje 2 site is situated on the left bank of Dubna River, one of the numerous sources of the Volga River. The site is located in wet boggy conditions, which are favourable for pit formation. This environment is also favourable for good preservation of prehistoric bone, wooden and other organic remains. This fact explains the richness of the organic material collections, and their good preservation. The site is situated 110 km to the north of Moscow and 50 km to the north of Sergiev Possad. We had to use a large experimental collection from the laboratory of use-wear analysis of the Institute of Material Culture History (St.-Petersburg, director G.F. Korobkova) with the aim of correlating the traces, which had formed on the surface of bone implements. So at our disposal we had experimental tools made from bone, which were linked with processing different materials: skins (needles, awls, scrapers, planes/spatula), wood (planes, burins, chisels), plants (sickles), pottery (planes and tools for decoration) and antlers (borers and perforators). Besides this we completed the experimental collection with tools made from cow ribs, which were used for fish scale processing and fish preparation. In this paper we describe the use-wear traces, found on the experimental tools and also two types of tools made from elk ribs, which were defined in the archaeological material. We analysed implements made from elk ribs found in the second Mesolithic layer (7400-7300 BP). Traditionally and accordingly to ethnographic materials these tools were known as “knives for fish processing”. Our investigation aimed to check on this functional statement made without any use-wear analysis. Also we analysed tool made from turtle shell (Emys orbicularis), which had been found in lower Mesolithic layer (7900-7800 BP), and a series of tools made from beaver mandible, which had been transformed in order to use the sharp points as burins.

This technical note describes alternatives to control undesirable flooding caused by beavers at wetland restoration projects. Beaver dams are a natural part of the North American landscape, and in some situations beavers have been deliberately re-introduced to augment the restoration process. In other cases, however, beaver damming can cause flooding that is detrimental to restoration project objectives. This unwanted flooding caused by beavers can often be prevented or controlled by structures designed to: 1) prevent the damming of water control structures, spiliways, and road culverts, 2) regulate water levels upstream of a beaver dam, and 3) both prevent damming and regulate water levels. This technical note describes various alternatives that can be applied separately or in combination to accomplish these objectives.

Requests for assistance, monetary losses attributed to wildlife, and numbers of wild animals removed from urban areas in California increased significantly between 1982 and 1989. Five species of wildlife are responsible for the majority of complaints received from the public. Because of the inherent problems associated with animal damage control in densely populated urban areas, specialized control equipment and techniques such as cage traps, crossbows and night vision goggles are utilized by U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal Plant Health Inspection Service, Animal Damage Control (USDA-APHIS-ADC) personnel. Urban ADC programs help educate a large segment of the population about the need for occasional control of problem wildlife.

Three sets of linear regression models relating vegetation and hydrographic variables to observed beaver colony densities were developed for 3 study areas in Quebec where the effects of trapping on beaver densities were considered negligible. The first two study areas were located in mature northern hardwood forest. This research focused principally on the first study area, Papineau-Labelle Wildlife Reserve, where beaver colony density and habitat variables were studied at a 1:20,000 scale on 20 4-sq-km sample plots. Over 700 habitat variables were collected and generated from forest inventory maps, a computerized forest stand database, and base maps using a digitizer, microcomputer, mainframe and SAS programs. From the set of 32 models presented, the model explaining the most variation (95%) showed that beaver colony densities increased with density of stream length between 2% and 6% gradient and amount of wetland broadleaf cover forest area and decreased with forest stand area between 60 and 100 years of age. A set of decision rules was developed to help managers select the best model for determining beaver colony density according to availability, effort needed to measure and generalizability of the habitat information, and according to desired precision of the estimation. The model explaining the most variation (62%) in beaver colony numbers with the least measurement effort used total stream length measured from maps with the line intercept method. In the second study area, Gatineau Park, hydrographic and shoreline vegetation variables in 63 4-sq-km quadrats were examined. The model explaining the most variation (35%) in beaver colony numbers showed that beaver colony densities increased with density of stream length in the 1 % to 10% gradient class. The third study area was located in the boreal forest of the St. Lawrence North Shore area and included 49 trapping units in which the effects of trapping on colony densities was considered negligible. Strychnine alkaloid baits were consumed by both captive and wild beaver without any apparent hesitation. An approximate minimal acute lethal dose of sodium monofluoroacetate to beaver of mixed ages and sex was 0 .202 mg/kg. Trapping beaver on four study area watersheds in Alabama with No. 330 conibear traps for approximately two weeks in winter during two successive years essentially eliminated beaver. Older individuals were trapped the first year, maturing juveniles and the remaining few adults were trapped the second year, and there was very little reproduction between the trapping periods. Trapping, with its recreational appeal, and income and food potential seems the better and more prudent approach to control of nuisance beaver than others being considered.

The experiments seem to indicate that the stimulus-situation which regulates the dam-building activities is comparatively simple. It seems to be clear that the dam building activity is released by acoustical stimuli from water running swiftly over the dam and by optical stimuli from indentations in the top of the dam. Optical stimuli from indentations in the up-stream side of the dam also release the pushing of material to the dam in the same way, as indentations round the lodge or tunnels release the lodge building activity. On the contrary, in the experiments the animals did not react to optical stimuli from water running over the dam or to any kind of stimuli from water being sucked through holes in the upstream side of the dam under the surface. If the water was running very swiftly over the dam the animals were building intensely on the dam at especially high water level, as well as at especially low water level. It then seems as if the water level has no direct effect on the dam building behaviour. On the contrary, a rising water level seems to have a releasing and stimulating effect on the lodge -building activity. (Author)

A general review of the important factors that should be considered in Utah's beaver trapping and transplanting program, records of previous transplantings, and present status of beaver and transplanting needs of the state's nine national forests. Edgar Alexander Mearns writes to Theodore Roosevelt to request his help in obtaining a permit for the collection of moose, caribou, and beaver for the U.S. National Museum. Kermit Roosevelt will obtain the specimens while he is in New Brunswick.

William W. Hart tells President Roosevelt that the remounting job is complete and the heads have been re-hung at Sagamore Hill. Hart has enclosed bills for the work and discusses some of the details of the taxidermy labor and mentions other work that could be done. Hart looks forward to receiving more "fresh specimens" from Roosevelt to showcase his art.

The William W. Hart taxidermy company writes to William Loeb about a bear rug, which has been cleaned. The canvas lining did not need to be replaced. A note on the back of the letter asks whether a letter should be written regarding a beaver robe.
