1. Water consumption and factors influencing hydration status

Abstract

Objectives. This study aimed to provide data on water intake from food and beverages of free-living adults in their natural environment, and investigate how this is affected by physiological, psychological, social and environmental factors. A further aim was to monitor the hydration status of free-living adults and relate this data to water intake. Methods The consumption of all food and beverages was recorded in a diary over three consecutive days by 80 healthy adults (40 males, 40 females), aged 18 to 65 years, who were instructed to continue their normal eating and drinking habits and lifestyles throughout the study. The data was analysed to determine total daily water intake and how this was affected by time of day, day of the week, presence of others, location of consumption, age and subjects mood. A further 20 healthy subjects (10 males, 10 females) repeated these procedures but also had blood samples taken for monitoring of blood indices (haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, sodium concentration, and potassium concentration) and provided urine samples for the measurement of urine indices (volume, colour, specific gravity, osmolality and sodium, potassium, chloride, and creatinine concentrations). Results The total volume of water consumed by the 80 subjects was 2229  882 ml/day (mean  standard deviation). Females tended to consume more water than males (2402  827 ml/day vs 2056  911 ml/day, P = 0.079). Similar volumes were consumed by the additional 20 subjects in the hydration status study. Females appeared euhydrated; males appeared mild dehydrated, having a higher morning and 24-hour urine specific gravity and osmolality than females (P < 0.05, respectively). Conclusions The mean daily total volume of water consumed by females in this study was greater than the adequate intake value set by the European Food Safety Authority; for males it was lower. Females were euhydrated during the study but males tended to be mild dehydrated, reflecting their comparative water intakes.

Abstract

The use of the analysis of the blood system indices as a marker during preparation of athletes of elite groups represents a promising method of diagnosis. Objective. Study and use of blood test results when using innovative technologies in the course of altitude training of elite group athletes of the national team of Ukraine. Methods. Analysis of literary sources, questionnaires, pedagogical observation, methods of mathematical diagnostics. Results. It has been determined that only 12% of athletes occasionally use blood test as a marker during preparation for the competitions. The majority of respondents (40%) stated that they use blood tests only during training sessions and only if there are appropriate experts and equipment. Studies are chaotic, and, as the survey showed, during the analysis, the state of body recovery, the nature of the previous training sessions are not taken into account. Therefore, the absolute values of low efficiency and do not provide the coach and athlete with full information about the state of the body that could be used later in the management of the training process The urgency of the use of blood system analysis as a marker for effective management of the process of preparation during the use of innovative technologies of altitude preparation of athletes of the elite group for the Olympics Games 2020 in Tokyo was established., Використання аналізу показників системи крові як маркера під час підготовки спортсменів елітних груп є перспективним методом діагностики. Мета. Вивчення і використання результатів аналізу крові під час використання інноваційних технологій у ході гірської підготовки легкоатлетів елітної групи збірної команди України. Методи. Аналіз літературних джерел, анкетування, педагогічне спостереження, методи математичної статистики. Результати. Визначено, що тільки 12 % спортсменів епізодично використовують аналіз крові як маркер під час підготовки до змагань. Більшість, а саме 40 % респондентів відповіли, що вони використовують аналіз крові тільки під час навчально-тренувальних заходів і лише за наявності відповідних фахівців і обладнання. Дослідження мають хаотичний характер, і, як показало анкетування, під час проведення аналізу не враховуються стан відновлення організму, характер попередніх тренувальних занять. Тому отримані абсолютні величини малоефективні і не дають тренеру та спортсмену повної інформації про стан організму, яку можна було б використовувати в подальшому під час управління тренувальним процесом. Встановлено актуальність використання аналізу системи крові як маркера для ефективного управління процесом підготовки під час використання інноваційних технологій гірської підготовки легкоатлетів елітної групи до Олімпійських ігор-2020 в Токіо.

3. A Computerised Tomographic assessment of structural changes in the human brain with aging

Abstract

Background : Computerised Tomography (CT) scan of brain is a useful tool to detect structural changes in the brain with accuracy and safety. Aging is associated with gradual loss of normal brain tissue that can cause greater levels of decline in cognition and leads to low quality of life. This decline is found to occur only after a particular age. Material and Methods : The study was conducted on 98 healthy subjects belonging to both sexes between the age of 20 85 years. CT scan was performed to assess the size of the ventricles of the brain and cortical sulci. Results : Data was analysed using appropriate software to know the significance of the change with aging. The cerebral ventricles were found to enlarge along with thinning of the cortical sulci which was found to be significant (p 0.05). Discussion: The enlargement is not uniform throughout the ventricular system and is found to be relatively early and significantly more in the frontal brain regions which has a more complex structure with late maturation.
