Due to the ageing society, policy focuses on independent living of elderly in need for care. While the preferences of the elderly to live autonomously vary, there is limited information on variation in needs for the physical environment, e.g., shared and private places. A pilot study was done to develop insights into preferences for social and physical environment of the elderly in need for care. A questionnaire (N=52) and workshop (N=22) were conducted with future elderly. The study showed that preferences for ways of living largely varied. Many were willing to share facilities and help each other, although they did not want to provide somatic care. Based on the results two new concepts were explored, i.e. farm like housing in the city centre and small-scale housing with friends. The concepts, resulting from the questionnaire and workshop, suggest that the method can be used to further explore connections between preferences and design., Environmental & Climate Design

Unterschiedliche Gesellschaften bringen unterschiedliche Arten des Zusammenlebens und Wohnens hervor. Da unsere Gesellschaft einem ständigen Wandel in vielerlei Hinsicht unterliegt, verändern sich Wohnformen ständig mit. Die heutigen gesellschaftlichen Umbrüche führen unter anderem dazu, dass gemeinschaftliche Wohnformen wiederentdeckt und neu interpretiert werden. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird die Entwicklung von kooperativen Wohnformen beleuchtet, sowie die Auswirkung eines sozialen Miteinanders auf den benötigten Raum. Der zweite Fokusbereich dieser Arbeit sind fraktale Geometriesysteme, im Besonderen Verzweigungssysteme, wie sie in der Natur bei Bäumen, Flussläufen, etc. vorkommen. Diese geometrischen Strukturen wurden in verschiedenen Studien erforscht und anschließend in einen architektonischen Kontext übertragen. Schlussendlich wurden diese beiden Themen in einem Entwurfsprojekt miteinander verschränkt. Es entstand ein Entwurf für ein Siedlungsgebiet auf der Ferrariwiese im Süden von Innsbruck, das Platz schafft für gemeinschaftliches Wohnen in einem Grundrisssystem, das sich von Verzweigungsstrukturen ableitet. Sowohl der städtebauliche Kontext wurde betrachtet, in dem ein Umfeld zum Wohnen geschaffen wurde, als auch das Zusammenwohnen selbst in einem kleinen Detailausschnitt des Gebiets. Darüber hinaus wurde der Beziehung von privaten Rückzugsmöglichkeiten zu gemeinschaftlich genutzten Flächen, die von unterschiedlichen Gruppen bespielt werden, Beachtung geschenkt. Das Verzweigungssystem lässt hier sehr unterschiedliche Situationen zu, was für das Entstehen von Gemeinschaft sehr wertvoll ist. Das dem Entwurf zugrundeliegende soziale Konzept des kooperativen Zusammenlebens ist für den Aufbau des Wohnbaus strukturgebend, während das geometrische Verzweigungssystem die Form genauer definiert., Different societies produce different ways of living and living together. As our society is subject to constant change, our forms of housing constantly adapt with it. The profound changes that our society is currently undergoing lead to a rediscovery and reinterpretation of communal forms of living. The first part of this master’s thesis looks at the development of cooperative forms of living and the impact of social interaction on spatial requirements. The second topic this thesis deals with is fractal geometric systems, in particular branching systems, as they often occur in nature, for example in trees, rivers, etc. These geometric structures were explored in various studies and then translated into an architectural context. Finally, these two topics were brought together in a design project. On the “Ferrariwiese” plot south of Innsbruck, the thesis envisions a residential area, which creates a space for shared living in a floor plan system developed on the basis of branching systems. The project takes a detailed look at both the urban-planning context for this newly created living environment and a small section of the area to see what living together would actually look like for the inhabitants. Furthermore, the paper examines the relationship between private areas and collectively used spaces whose function is determined by various different groups of users. The branching system allows for various diverse scenarios, which are immensely valuable for a community. The increasing possibilities of the ubiquitous world of the (internet of things) IoT, will not only be installed in our environment but also be attached to the human body. Generating services in which the participant has become as connective to its surrounding as the devices installed to serve them. Thereby expanding the reliance on the rapidly developing algorithms to advise and even control, human’s daily lives, also known as algorithmic governmentality. This new agency, that is participating/governing (in) present days ecologies, require a certain input in the form of data. Which depending on the agency’s responsibilities and services could exist out of personal data, generating and the whole scale of technical, practical, social and ethical challenges. As these developments transition from the ‘realm of artefacts’ into the ‘realm of architecture’, it becomes the responsibility of the architect/spatial designer how to deal with this apparatus and the associated challenges. [ES] Este proyecto de regeneración y revitalización del actual modelo de ciudad se situa en el barrio de Orriols (Valencia norte). Se parte de una problematica social, actual y real, un barrio con un escaso nivel educativo, una importante heterogeneidad social y una densidad elevada, y de una problematica arquitectonica, la morfologia y movilidad del barrio. La intervención pretende favorecer la creación de una red de aprendizaje en la convivencia, haciendo del espacio compartido un entorno adecuado para que los usuarios se relacionen, aprendan, se ayuden y entiendan el espacio en el que viven. Considerar la intervención como un engranaje, en el perímetro, que funciona con los diferentes usuarios (género, cultura, edad, etc) relacionándose entre si, y con el entorno arquitectónico. Se estudian las necesidades espaciales de relación, circulación y estancia de los usuarios, al igual que los materiales y elementos que definen este escenario, consiguiendo con la intervención la solución de problemas de movilidad, accesibilidad, integración y desarrollo social de un barrio que aprende así a querer su arquitectura, su realidad y su gente.

Background: The central claim of this article is that African disability justice is possible through analysing, re-examining and reimagining realities that distort and disempower the being of individuals with disabilities. Aim: In this article, I argue for an African disability justice. Methods: I do this by establishing that higher education ought to produce citizens who are responsive and are able to reinvent Africa through the idea of (community) serving. I borrow these ideas from the African ethical thinking and practice of relational attitude and communal living. Setting: In traditional African thinking, as informed by Ubuntu [I am, because you are] social thinking, disability was recognised and respected. Results: I, therefore, develop the concept of reflective-creative education (RCE) as carrying this African ethos for social justice (responsive and enabling citizens) towards members with disabilities. In that endeavour, African higher educational institutes ought to prepare and empower Africans to be responsive and to enable others to live confidently and inclusively in transformed communities that address the needs of citizens. Conclusion: In this way education becomes a tool (RCE) for changing attitudes and developing citizens to be proactive in building better communities to live in.

In the 1960s and 1970s, a counterculture emerged in Melbourne’s inner-urban suburbs, part of progressive cultural and political shifts that were occurring in Western democracies worldwide. This counterculture sought to enact political and social change through experimenting with the fabric of everyday life in the inner-urban space. They did this in the ways in which they ate, socialised, lived, related to money, work, the community around them, and lived – often in shared or communal housing. The ways in which they lived, loved, related to the community around them, and found social and personal fulfilment was tied up with a countercultural politics. My thesis argues that these inner-urban counterculturalists embodied a progressive politics which articulated and enacted a profoundly personal criticism of post-war conservatism.

This project is mainly about the revitalization of the old port area of the Chinese city Xiangtan. As a riverside city located in the south part of China, Xiangtan has been through a long historical period during which some of the most formative moments of Chinese politics and economy happened. As the departure point and the cultural core of the city, the old port area, however, is now marginalized by the urban expansion and economic growth which impoverishes the old port area even more. Meanwhile, the old port area of Xiangtan is an urban area suffering from yearly flooding, during which the local residents have no choice but to move to other safe space provided by the government. The basic design vision is to intervene the site area with a flood-proof urban scale built environment for local people to stay during flooding, introduce several positive programmes, and let them be the triggering factor towards a prosperous future of the vernacular community at the same time.

Government owned housing in New Zealand is moving towards a model of privatisation. This can limit the opportunities found in the semi-public space for neighbours to meet and interact. Without these human interactions, a housing complex loses that which makes it a community. By restructuring the site to facilitate social interaction, this thesis aims to focus the space between buildings towards communal living, through an exploration of the public private interface in council housing complex, Arlington Apartments, in Wellington, New Zealand. This project will develop the balance in which residents can share space with their neighbours, by re-zoning current ambiguous space to be communal to a smaller group, in order to give tenants an opportunity to appropriate their living environment.

Nancy Presley was born in 1947 in Albany, Ga. where she also currently resides. After graduating from Emory University with a degree in Art History, Presley worked as a layout editor for The Great Speckled Bird and printer for the Sojourner Truth Press. She later spent ten years as a member of The Farm commune in Summertown, Tn. before becoming an art teacher. Richard Schoenbrun is a registered nurse and longtime member of The Farm commune., In this interview, Nancy Presley begins the conversation by discussing her family and childhood in Albany, Ga., her influences and her somewhat tumultuous college experience. She then describes her experiences as a layout editor at The Great Speckled Bird and her involvement in the women's liberation movement through her work at the Sojourner Truth Press. Near the end of the interview, Richard Schoenbrun joins the conversation to augment Presley's account of living on The Farm commune in Summertown, Tn.

This is a complex project focused on combing a working and living environment for the employees of a tech company located in Amsterdam at the former Apple Market. The design redevelops an existing, underutilized parking garage and the adjacent waterfront to create an innovation district integrated within the urban fabric, with special attention to the layering of different target groups, hence a variety of communal spaces and dwellings (affordable housing, mid-range housing, family apartments, short-stay hotel, long-stay hotel and investor apartments). The project also includes a catenary dome structure (design dome, greenhouse and auditorium) the key element that gives public access and transparency to the campus.

Ilene Schroeder was born in 1947 and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. Both sides of her family immigrated to New York from Eastern Europe. She moved to Georgia with her family after high school and enrolled at the University of Georgia. At UGA, she participated in anti-war activism and became interested in women's issues. After college, Schroeder spent some time working odd jobs and living with a group of friends in various parts of Georgia, then in 1970 she started working at the Community Crisis Center in Atlanta, where she eventually became director of counseling. Schroeder joined Karuna Counseling in 1974, the year it opened. She began working toward a PhD at Georgia State University in 1980 and left Karuna in 1981. She has practiced privately as a therapist since then. Established in 1974, the original mission of Karuna Counseling was to provide high quality, compassionate care for women. Over the years the practice has grown, developed and expanded its focus, and it now provides holistic psychotherapy services to men, women, adolescents, families, couples, businesses, and organizations in the Atlanta, Ga. area. The Karuna Counseling Oral History Project aims to document the history of the counseling practice through peer interviews with its therapists., In this interview, Ilene Schroeder begins by talking about her family and briefly talks about her childhood. She describes moving to Georgia from Brooklyn and feeling like an outsider, then becoming more comfortable with herself while at the University of Georgia. She talks about the feminist and anti-war activism she engaged in as a college student. Schroeder talks about living in various parts of Georgia in a communal situation with some friends, including a stint in Clayton, Ga., where she and her housemates were threatened with violence. She describes feeling aimless after college, then gaining a sense of purpose when she began working as a counselor at the Community Crisis Center in Atlanta, which was founded by some of her friends, and after giving birth to her son Chad. Schroeder talks about her experiences, both positive and negative, at Karuna Counseling, and she and Franklin Abbott discuss the current state of the profession of psychotherapy. She also talks about her views on the current state of social and political life in the United States. She talks about her love of baseball, her parents' deaths, and her feelings about her own life and how they have changed as she has aged.

The aim of this thesis is to explore how professionals working in a French community association perceived the notion of spirituality and a shared life practice, and furthermore what contributions and limits these concepts have in the social work. To attain this, a case study has been done using participant observations and four thematically opened interviews within a L'arche community where persons with varying disabilities are living together with professional assistants. To put the association in a theoretical framework, I propose it to be regarded as a case of milieu therapy with spiritual elements, which are the two areas that will be stressed out in the section about previous research. The theories used in the study are ecological system theory, existentialism and Roger's theory about interpersonal relationships. The result of the thesis illustrate how the notion of a shared life practice has good contributions in the social work, such as equal and personal relationships between the members of the community and furthermore a notion of time that makes the work unstressful and natural as a result of the communal living. However, a limit discovered regarding this practice is the exposed and tiering situation for the assistants that hinder a longterm work in the community for most assistants. Another finding is that the spiritual dimension in the community makes way for a holistic view of everyone and contributes with rituals that create strong moments of fellowship within the community, at the same time it risks to make people who regard themselves as non-spiritual not to feel totally included.

Key to this study is the history of Makgabeng, mainly focusing on creation of rural communal identities in that area. Defining identity will be an important aspect for this study in which a deduction will be made on how the Makgabeng communities viewed themselves and were also viewed by those outside their area. The various aspects which shaped and led them to view themselves and be viewed that way over time will all be explained. The history of Makgabeng was never included in the mainstream just like the history of most of the previously marginalised communities in South Africa. The early history of such communities was documented by Europeans, while those communities did not participate in the production of their own histories and the history of South Africa in general. The history of indigenous communities has been told from the other people’s perspectives resulting in huge gaps as well as distorted, prejudiced and subjective accounts of the past. The past of these indigenous communities was mostly preserved in oral traditions and oral history. Therefore, one of the principal aims of this study is to work towards filling the gaps as well as attempting to rectify distortions and myths prevailing in the current texts which were made by authors alien to the indigenous people.

Through the study of Phenomenology, Utopian Communities, and Community Design, a new dormitory can be designed to fulfill the needs of the students on the Trinity Valley campus.

Through observation and critical response, Seven Loci: The Completion of Villa Maderni is for the author not only a work reflective of his still emergent design judgments, but also one birthed as he lived and worked in the physical fabric of the place. The primary goal of this work is to propose an inhabitable enclosure for the perimeter of an already sacred villa and garden in the Ticino region of Switzerland. The secondary goal of the thesis is to explore and propose an architecture which does not make a forgery of the villa, but one whose language is of its own time and materials, all the while responding to the invisible traditions of the town, street and site.

The scope of the project is to design the Gurudware and the Housing Facilities for a community of 150 people for the 3H0 Ashram at Espanola, New Mexico. The present facilities at the Ashram are outgrown and in some instrances not conducive to the 3H0 concept way of life. It is the hope that the design will not only reflect the 3HO concept, but act as a model for future Ashrams.

Mezi charakteristické znaky dnešní společnosti patří především prudký rytmus života, mobilita lidí, změna způsobu života a socialních scénářů. V současné době, v době informační společnosti, lidský život je těsně spojen z rozvojem informačních a výrobních technologií ( např. ted’ lidé nejsou připoutani k pracovnímu místu a je uplně běžně pracovat odkudkoli). Rozvoj měst a osídlení je ovlivnen, mimo životního způsobu, vysokým a stále rostoucím stupňěm urbanizace, globalizace, rostoucí devastace životního prostředí. Mění se demografická skladba a sociální struktura obyvatel. Společnost se neustále mění tak intenzivně, že budovy a bydlení se sráží s novými požadavky, které by měly být schopné splnit. Cílem této diplomové práce je zejména hledání urbanistických a architektonických možností řešení aktuálních otázek bydlení v kontextu areálu byvalé Kohnovy cihelny ve městě Brně. Diplomová práce předevšim vychází ze snažení pochopit jak se mění nebo jak se musí proměnit přístup k projektování bydlení ve dnešní době a taky ze snažení pochopit jak vytvořit kvalitní návrh odpovídající současným trendům a potřebám bydlení. Brno je počtem obyvatel i rozlohou druhé největší město v České republice. V Brně je možně sledovat rysy post-industrialního města s velkým počtem nevyuživaných průmyslových areálů. Jedním z takových brownfields je i areál byvalé Kohnovy cihelny, který i byl vybrán pro zpracování v teto diplomové práce. Areál byvalé Kohnovy cihelny leží na pozemcích, které náležejí z části ke katastrálnímu území Bohunice, z části pak ke katastrálnímu území Štýřice, a je velmi atraktivním územím pro rozvoj., Characteristic features of today's society include fast way of life, mobility of people, change the way of life and social scenarios. Nowadays, at the time of the information society, life is closely connected to the development of information technologies (for example, people are not attached to workplace in the office anymore and can work from home). Urban and settlement development is influenced, as well, by a high and ever increasing degree of urbanization, globalization, increasing environmental devastation. Demographic and social structure of the population are changing. Society is constantly changing so intensely that housing fases with new requirements that it should be able to meet. The aim of this project is to find urban and architectural possibilities for solution of current housing issues in the context of the former Kohn brick building in the city of Brno. This project is my effort to understand how approach to housing design changes or how it should change, as well as on my tries to understand how to create a high quality desing which will be able to satisfy current housing trends and needs. Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. It has features of post-industrial city with a large number of unused industrial sites. One of such sites is former Kohn's brickyard, which was selected for developing in this master's thesis. The site of the former Kohn's brickyard is located on land belonging partly to the cadastral area of Bohunice, partly to the cadastral area of Štýřice, and this is a very potential area for further development.

This project is my effort to understand how approach to housing design changes or how it should change, as well as on my tries to understand how to create a high quality desing which will be able to satisfy current housing trends and needs. Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. It has features of post-industrial city with a large number of unused industrial sites. One of such sites is former Kohn's brickyard, which was selected for developing in this master's thesis. The site of the former Kohn's brickyard is located on land belonging partly to the cadastral area of Bohunice, partly to the cadastral area of Štýřice, and this is a very potential area for further development.

Cílem této diplomové práce je zejména hledání urbanistických a architektonických možností řešení aktuálních otázek bydlení v kontextu areálu byvalé Kohnovy cihelny ve městě Brně. Diplomová práce předevšim vychází ze snažení pochopit jak se mění nebo jak se musí proměnit přístup k projektování bydlení ve dnešní době a taky ze snažení pochopit jak vytvořit kvalitní návrh odpovídající současným trendům a potřebám bydlení. Demographic and social structure of the population are changing. Society is constantly changing so intensely that housing fases with new requirements that it should be able to meet. The aim of this project is to find urban and architectural possibilities for solution of current housing issues in the context of the former Kohn brick building in the city of Brno.
