Constraining strain localization and the growth of shear fabrics within brittle fault zones at sub-seismic slip rates is important for understanding fault strength and frictional stability. We conducted direct shear experiments on simulated sandstone-derived fault gouges at an effective normal stress of 40 MPa, a pore pressure of 15 MPa, and a temperature of 100°C. Using a passive strain marker and X-ray Computed Tomography, we analyzed the spatial distribution of deformation in gouges deformed in the strain-hardening, subsequent strain-softening, and then steady-state regimes at displacement rates of 1, 30, and 1,000 µm/s. We developed a machine-learning-based automatic boundary detection method to recognize the shear fabrics and quantify displacement partitioning between each fabric element. Our results show fabrics oriented along R1 and Y (including boundary) shears are the two major fabric elements. At rates of 1 and 30 µm/s, the relative amount of displacement on R1 shears is displacement dependent, increasing to ∼20% of the total displacement up to the strain-softening stage, then decreasing to ∼10%–18% at the steady state. This trend is absent at the high rate where ∼18% of the displacement occurs on R1 shears throughout all investigated stages. At all rates, the relative amount of displacement on Y shears increases linearly with displacement to a total of larger than 50% at the steady state. Our study provides constraints on the development of the active slip zone, which is an important factor controlling heating and weakening associated with small-magnitude earthquakes with limited displacement (mm-dm), such as induced seismicity.

Small-magnitude earthquakes (M < 4) have received escalating attention in recent years owing to the global surge in human-induced seismicity. Subsurface activities such as hydrocarbon production can lead to triggering of faults cutting the reservoir system, sometimes bringing significant societal unrest. To evaluate the risk of induced events, it is important to understand the strength and behavior of the fault during fast movement (i.e. slip velocity > 1 m/s). This requires a full characterization of the process of where slip occurs and how faults strength breaks down due to frictional heating from rupture nucleation to propagation. This thesis focuses on Europe's largest gas field, the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands, as a case study for small-magnitude earthquakes under upper crustal conditions. Against this background, I performed laboratory experiments on sandstone-derived fault gouge materials, coupled with numerical modeling to simulate Groningen earthquakes under (near) in-situ conditions. A key finding is the pivotal role of pore fluid in weakening a gouge-filled fault during seismic slip, attributed to thermal expansion of pore fluid. This weakening process operates at various scales, from millimeter-scale shear-bands to micrometer-scale grain-to-grain contacts, leading to distinct stages of weakening. Pore fluid properties and host-rock materials influence the efficiency of heating and weakening, with microstructural analyses revealing the impact of initial gouge microstructure and slip localization development. The results provide better constraints on slip-weakening parameters enhancing geomechanical models of seismicity in the Groningen reservoir system but can also provide input for feasibility studies of future projects in the subsurface.

In this work, we investigate slip localization in sheared granular faults at seismic velocities using 3-D numerical simulations with the discrete element method (DEM). An aggregate of non-destructive spherical particles is subjected to direct shear by using two moving boundaries in a sandwich configuration to identify the impact of particle-scale parameters on slip localization. We impose a thin layer of fine-grained particles with variable contrast in thickness and grain size adjacent to the boundary as well as in the middle of the granular layer to simulate boundary and Y shears observed in both natural and laboratory fault gouges. The results show that larger amounts of strain is accommodated within the pre-described finer-grained layer even with a small (< 10%) contrast in grain size. Up to 90% of the displacement is localized in a finer-grained layer when the contrast ratio of the grain size is 50%. Based on the concept of the average spreading velocity of particles and squeeze expulsion theory in granular flow, we suggest that the phenomenon of localization is likely from result from the contribution of larger grains collisions with smaller grains. Since the amount of frictional heat generated depends on the degree of localization, the results provide crucial information on the heat generation and associated slip accommodation in sheared gouge zones. We conclude that the occurrence of a weaker, fine-grained layer within a dense fault zone is likely to result in self-enhanced weakening of the fault planes.

We present optical, ultraviolet, and infrared data of the type II supernova (SN II) 2020jfo at 14.5 Mpc. This wealth of multiwavelength data allows to compare different metrics commonly used to estimate progenitor masses of SN II for the same object. Using its early light curve, we infer SN 2020jfo had a progenitor radius of $\approx$700 $R_{\odot}$, consistent with red supergiants of initial mass $M_{\rm ZAMS}=$11-13 $M_{\odot}$. The decline in its late-time light curve is best fit by a ${}^{56}$Ni mass of 0.018$\pm$0.007 $M_{\odot}$ consistent with that ejected from SN II-P with $\approx$13 $M_{\odot}$ initial mass stars. Early spectra and photometry do not exhibit signs of interaction with circumstellar matter, implying that SN 2020jfo experienced weak mass loss within the final years prior to explosion. Our spectra at $>$250 days are best fit by models from 12 $M_{\odot}$ initial mass stars. We analyzed integral field unit spectroscopy of the stellar population near SN 2020jfo, finding its massive star population had a zero age main sequence mass of 9.7$\substack{+2.5\\-1.3} M_{\odot}$. We identify a single counterpart in pre-explosion imaging and find it has an initial mass of at most $7.2\substack{+1.2\\-0.6} M_{\odot}$. We conclude that the inconsistency between this mass and indirect mass indicators from SN 2020jfo itself is most likely caused by extinction with $A_{V}=2$-3 mag due to matter around the progenitor star, which lowered its observed optical luminosity. The nearby type II supernova, SN2023ixf in M101 exhibits signatures of early-time interaction with circumstellar material in the first week post-explosion. This material may be the consequence of prior mass loss suffered by the progenitor which possibly manifested in the form of a detectable pre-supernova outburst. We present an analysis of the long-baseline pre-explosion photometric data in $g$, $w$, $r$, $i$, $z$ and $y$ filters from Pan-STARRS as part of the Young Supernova Experiment, spanning $\sim$5,000 days. We find no significant detections in the Pan-STARRS pre-explosion light curve. We train a multilayer perceptron neural network to classify pre-supernova outbursts. We find no evidence of eruptive pre-supernova activity to a limiting absolute magnitude of $-7$. The limiting magnitudes from the full set of $gwrizy$ (average absolute magnitude $\approx$-8) data are consistent with previous pre-explosion studies. We use deep photometry from the literature to constrain the progenitor of SN2023ixf, finding that these data are consistent with a dusty red supergiant (RSG) progenitor with luminosity $\log\left(L/L_\odot\right)$$\approx$5.12 and temperature $\approx$3950K, corresponding to a mass of 14-20 M$_\odot$, Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

A black hole can launch a powerful relativistic jet after it tidally disrupts a star. If this jet fortuitously aligns with our line of sight, the overall brightness is Doppler boosted by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, such on-axis relativistic tidal disruption events have the potential to unveil cosmological (redshift z > 1) quiescent black holes and are ideal test beds for understanding the radiative mechanisms operating in super-Eddington jets. Here we present multiwavelength (X-ray, UV, optical and radio) observations of the optically discovered transient AT 2022cmc at z = 1.193. Its unusual X-ray properties, including a peak observed luminosity of ≳1048 erg s−1, systematic variability on timescales as short as 1,000 s and overall duration lasting more than 30 days in the rest frame, are traits associated with relativistic tidal disruption events. The X-ray to radio spectral energy distributions spanning 5–50 days after discovery can be explained as synchrotron emission from a relativistic jet (radio), synchrotron self-Compton (X-rays) and thermal emission similar to that seen in low-redshift tidal disruption events (UV/optical). Our modelling implies a beamed, highly relativistic jet akin to blazars but requires extreme matter domination (that is, a high ratio of electron-to-magnetic-field energy densities in the jet) and challenges our theoretical understanding of jets.

This paper presents a Transformer-based image compression system that allows for a variable image quality objective according to the user's preference. Optimizing a learned codec for different quality objectives leads to reconstructed images with varying visual characteristics. Our method provides the user with the flexibility to choose a trade-off between two image quality objectives using a single, shared model. Motivated by the success of prompt-tuning techniques, we introduce prompt tokens to condition our Transformer-based autoencoder. These prompt tokens are generated adaptively based on the user's preference and input image through learning a prompt generation network. Extensive experiments on commonly used quality metrics demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in adapting the encoding and/or decoding processes to a variable quality objective. While offering the additional flexibility, our proposed method performs comparably to the single-objective methods in terms of rate-distortion performance.

Adversarial robustness poses a critical challenge in the deployment of deep learning models for real-world applications. Traditional approaches to adversarial training and supervised detection rely on prior knowledge of attack types and access to labeled training data, which is often impractical. Existing unsupervised adversarial detection methods identify whether the target model works properly, but they suffer from bad accuracies owing to the use of common cross-entropy training loss, which relies on unnecessary features and strengthens adversarial attacks. We propose new training losses to reduce useless features and the corresponding detection method without prior knowledge of adversarial attacks. The detection rate (true positive rate) against all given white-box attacks is above 93.9% except for attacks without limits (DF($\infty$)), while the false positive rate is barely 2.5%. We present panchromatic observations and modeling of calcium-strong supernovae (SNe) 2021gno in the star-forming host galaxy NGC 4165 (D = 30.5 Mpc) and 2021inl in the outskirts of elliptical galaxy NGC 4923 (D = 80 Mpc), both monitored through the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE) transient survey. The multi-color light curves of both SNe show two peaks, the former peak being derived from shock cooling emission (SCE) and/or shock interaction with circumstellar material (CSM). The primary peak in SN 2021gno is coincident with luminous, rapidly decaying X-ray emission ($L_x = 5 \times 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$) detected by Swift-XRT at $\delta t = 1$ day after explosion, this observation being the second ever detection of X-rays from a calcium-strong transient. We interpret the X-ray emission from SN 2021gno in the context of shock interaction with dense CSM that extends to $r < 3 \times 10^{14}$ cm. Based on modeling of the SN 2021gno X-ray spectrum, we calculate a CSM mass range of $M_{\rm CSM} = (0.3 - 1.6) \times 10^{-3}$ M$_{\odot}$ and particle densities of $n = (1-4) \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$. Radio non-detections of SN 2021gno indicate a low-density environment at larger radii ($r > 10^{16}$ cm) and a progenitor mass loss rate of $\dot{M} < 10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, for $v_w = 500$ km s$^{-1}$. For radiation derived from SCE, modeling of the primary light curve peak in both SNe indicates an extended progenitor envelope mass and radius of $M_e = 0.02 - 0.05$ M$_{\odot}$ and $R_e = 30 - 230$ R$_{\odot}$. The explosion properties of SNe 2021gno and 2021inl suggest progenitor systems containing either a low-mass massive star or a white dwarf (WD), the former being unlikely for either object given the lack of star formation at both explosion sites. This paper introduces a learned hierarchical B-frame coding scheme in response to the Grand Challenge on Neural Network-based Video Coding at ISCAS 2023. We address specifically three issues, including (1) B-frame coding, (2) YUV 4:2:0 coding, and (3) content-adaptive variable-rate coding with only one single model. Most learned video codecs operate internally in the RGB domain for P-frame coding. B-frame coding for YUV 4:2:0 content is largely under-explored. In addition, while there have been prior works on variable-rate coding with conditional convolution, most of them fail to consider the content information. We build our scheme on conditional augmented normalized flows (CANF). It features conditional motion and inter-frame codecs for efficient B-frame coding. To cope with YUV 4:2:0 content, two conditional inter-frame codecs are used to process the Y and UV components separately, with the coding of the UV components conditioned additionally on the Y component. Moreover, we introduce adaptive feature modulation in every convolutional layer, taking into account both the content information and the coding levels of B-frames to achieve content-adaptive variable-rate coding. Experimental results show that our model outperforms x265 and the winner of last year's challenge on commonly used datasets in terms of PSNR-YUV.

Network Slicing (NS) is crucial for efficiently enabling divergent network applications in next generation networks. Nonetheless, the complex Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and diverse heterogeneity in network services entails high computational time for Network Slice Provisioning (NSP) optimization. The legacy optimization methods are challenging to meet the low latency and high reliability of network applications. To this end, we model the real-time NSP as an Online Network Slice Provisioning (ONSP) problem. Specifically, we formulate the ONSP problem as an online Multi-Objective Integer Programming Optimization (MOIPO) problem. Then, we approximate the solution of the MOIPO problem by applying the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) method to the traffic demand prediction. Our simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method compared to the state-of-the-art MOIPO solvers with a lower SLA violation rate and network operation cost.

The purpose of this study was to identify the trend of visits to ED for different diseases at the peak and slack stages of the epidemic.Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective observational study conducted in a tertiary referral medical center in northern Taiwan. We recorded weekly ED visits for myocardial infarction with or without ST-elevation (STEMI or NSTEMI), out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), acute stroke, and congestive heart failure from 2016 to 2021. We compared the local epidemic peak periods (calendar weeks 4– 18, 2020 and calendar weeks 21– 31, 2021) and its corresponding slack periods (calendar weeks 4– 18, 2021 and calendar weeks 21– 31, 2020) with the baseline period (2016– 2019) using Mann–Whitney test to identify the difference.Results: We observed a significant decline in ED visits (median [Q1, Q3]) during the epidemic for OHCA (6 [5, 7] and 5 [4, 6], p = 0.046, for baseline and peak period, respectively, in week 4– 18), acute stroke (41.5 [38, 47] and 35 [28, 39], p < 0.001, in week 4

We present observations of SN 2020fqv, a Virgo-cluster Type II core-collapse supernova (CCSN) with a high temporal resolution light curve from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) covering the time of explosion; ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) starting 3.3 days post-explosion; ground-based spectroscopic observations starting 1.1~days post-explosion; along with extensive photometric observations. Massive stars have complicated mass-loss histories leading up to their death as CCSNe, creating circumstellar medium (CSM) with which the SNe interact. Observations during the first few days post-explosion can provide important information about the mass-loss rate during the late stages of stellar evolution. Model fits to the quasi-bolometric light curve of SN 2020fqv reveal ~0.23 $M_{\odot}$ of CSM confined within ~1450 $R_{\odot}$ ($10^{14}$ cm) from its progenitor star. Early spectra (<4 days post-explosion), both from HST and ground-based observatories, show emission features from high-ionization metal species from the outer, optically thin part of this CSM. We find that the CSM is consistent with an eruption caused by the injection of $\sim$$5\times 10^{46}$ erg into the stellar envelope $\sim$300 days pre-explosion, potentially from a nuclear burning instability at the onset of oxygen burning. Light-curve fitting, nebular spectroscopy, and pre-explosion \textit{HST} imaging consistently point to a red supergiant (RSG) progenitor with $M_{\rm ZAMS}$$\approx$$13.5$--$15 \, M_{\odot}$, typical for SN~II progenitor stars. This finding demonstrates that a typical RSG, like the progenitor of SN 2020fqv, has a complicated mass-loss history immediately before core collapse., Comment: Published in MNRAS

Age of Information (AoI) reflects the time that is elapsed from the generation of a packet by a 5G user equipment(UE) to the reception of the packet by a controller. A design of an AoI-aware radio resource scheduler for UEs via reinforcement learning is proposed in this paper. In this paper, we consider a remote control environment in which a number of UEs are transmitting time-sensitive measurements to a remote controller. We consider the AoI minimization problem and formulate the problem as a trade-off between minimizing the sum of the expected AoI of all UEs and maximizing the throughput of the network. Inspired by the success of machine learning in solving large networking problems at low complexity, we develop a reinforcement learning-based method to solve the formulated problem. We used the state-of-the-art proximal policy optimization algorithm to solve this problem. Our simulation results showthat the proposed algorithm outperforms the considered baselines in terms of minimizing the expected AoI while maintaining the network throughput.

ASASSN-14ko is a recently discovered periodically flaring transient at the center of the AGN ESO 253-G003 with a slowly decreasing period. Here we show that the flares originate from the northern, brighter nucleus in this dual-AGN, post-merger system. The light curves for the two flares that occurred in May 2020 and September 2020 are nearly identical over all wavelengths. For both events, Swift observations showed that the UV and optical wavelengths brightened in unison. The effective temperature of the UV/optical emission rises and falls with the increase and subsequent decline in the luminosity. The X-ray flux, in contrast, first rapidly drops over $\sim$2.6 days, rises for $\sim$5.8 days, drops again over $\sim$4.3 days and then recovers. The X-ray spectral evolution of the two flares differ, however. During the May 2020 peak the spectrum softened with increases in the X-ray luminosity, while we observed the reverse for the September 2020 peak., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, and 1 table. Real-Time Networks (RTNs) provide latency guarantees for time-critical applications and it aims to support different traffic categories via various scheduling mechanisms. Those scheduling mechanisms rely on a precise network performance measurement to dynamically adjust the scheduling strategies. Machine Learning (ML) offers an iterative procedure to measure network performance. Network Calculus (NC) can calculate the bounds for the main performance indexes such as latencies and throughputs in an RTN for ML. Thus, the ML and NC integration improve overall calculation efficiency. This paper will provide a survey for different approaches of Real-Time Network performance measurement via NC as well as ML and present their results, dependencies, and application scenarios.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a frequently found organic contaminant in polluted-groundwater. In this microcosm study, effects of hydrogen-producing bacteria [Clostridium butyricum (Clostridium sp.)] and inhibitor of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) addition on the enhancement of TCE dechlorination were evaluated. Results indicate that Clostridium sp. supplement could effectively enhance TCE reductive dechlorination (97.4% of TCE removal) due to increased hydrogen concentration and Dehalococcoides (DHC) populations (increased to 1 × 104 gene copies/L). However, addition of Clostridium sp. also caused the increase in dsrA (dissimilatory sulfide reductase subunit A) (increased to 2 × 108 gene copies/L), and thus, part of the hydrogen was consumed by SRB, which would limit the effective application of hydrogen by DHC. Control of Clostridium sp. addition is a necessity to minimize the adverse impact of Clostridium sp. on DHC growth. Ferric citrate caused the slight raise of the oxidation-reduction state, which resulted in growth inhibition of SRB. Molybdate addition inhibited the growth of SRB, and thus, the dsrA concentrations (dropped from 4 × 107 to 9 × 105 gene copies/L) and sulfate reduction efficiency were decreased. Increased DHC populations (increased from 8 × 103 to 1 × 105 gene copies/L) were due to increased available hydrogen (increased from 0 to 2 mg/L), which enhanced TCE dechlorination (99.3% TCE removal). Metagenomic analyses show that a significant microbial diversity was detected in microcosms with different treatments. Clostridium sp., ferric citrate, and molybdate addition caused a decreased SRB communities and increased fatty acid production microbial communities (increased from 4.9% to 20.2%), which would be beneficial to the hydrogen production and TCE dechlorination processes.

We report photometry and spectroscopy of the outburst of the young stellar object Gaia19bey. We have established the outburst light curve with archival Gaia G, ATLAS Orange, ZTF r-band and Pan-STARRS rizy-filter photometry, showing an outburst of approximately 4 years duration, longer than typical EXors but shorter than FUors. Its pre-outburst SED shows a flat far-infrared spectrum, confirming the early evolutionary state of Gaia19bey and its similarity to other deeply embedded young stars experiencing outbursts. A lower limit to the peak outburst luminosity is approximately 182 L_sun at an assumed distance of 1.4 kpc, the minimum plausible distance. Infrared and optical spectroscopy near maximum light showed an emission line spectrum, including HI lines, strong red CaII emission, other metal emission lines, infrared CO bandhead emission, and a strong infrared continuum. Towards the end of the outburst, the emission lines have all but disappeared and the spectrum has changed into an almost pure continuum spectrum. This indicates a cessation of magnetospheric accretion activity. The near-infrared colors have become redder as Gaia19bey has faded, indicating a cooling of the continuum component. Near the end of the outburst, the only remaining strong emission lines are forbidden shock-excited emission lines. Adaptive optics integral field spectroscopy shows the H_2 1--0 S(1) emission with the morphology of an outflow cavity and the extended emission in the [FeII] line at 1644 nm with the morphology of an edge-on disk. A variety of genetic techniques have been devised to determine cell lineage relationships during tissue development. Some of these systems monitor cell lineages spatially and/or temporally without regard to gene expression by the cells, whereas others correlate gene expression with the lineage under study. The GAL4 Technique for Real-time and Clonal Expression (G-TRACE) system allows for rapid, fluorescent protein-based visualization of both current and past GAL4 expression patterns and is therefore amenable to genome-wide expression-based lineage screens. Here we describe the results from such a screen, performed by undergraduate students of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Undergraduate Research Consortium for Functional Genomics (URCFG) and high school summer scholars as part of a discovery-based education program. The results of the screen, which reveal novel expression-based lineage patterns within the brain, the imaginal disc epithelia, and the hematopoietic lymph gland, have been compiled into the G-TRACE Expression Database (GED), an online resource for use by the Drosophila research community. The impact of this discovery-based research experience on student learning gains was assessed independently and shown to be greater than that of similar programs conducted elsewhere. Furthermore, students participating in the URCFG showed considerably higher STEM retention rates than UCLA STEM students that did not participate in the URCFG, as well as STEM students nationwide.

We report the discovery of tidal structures around the intermediate-aged ($\sim$ 700--800~Myr), nearby ($\sim85$~pc) star cluster Coma Berenices. The spatial and kinematic grouping of stars is determined with the {\it Gaia} DR2 parallax and proper motion data, by a clustering analysis tool, \textsc{StarGO}, to map 5D parameters ($X, Y, Z$, $\mu_\alpha \cos\delta, \mu_\delta$) onto a 2D neural network. A leading and a trailing tails, each with an extension of $\sim50$~pc are revealed for the first time around this disrupting star cluster. The cluster members, totaling to $\sim115^{+5}_{-3}\,\rm {M_\odot}$, are clearly mass segregated, and exhibit a flat mass function with $\alpha \sim 0.79\pm0.16$, in the sense of $dN/dm \propto m^{-\alpha}$, where $N$ is the number of member stars and $m$ is stellar mass, in the mass range of $m=0.25$--$2.51~{\rm M_\odot}$. Within the tidal radius of $\sim$6.9~pc, there are 77 member candidates with an average position, i.e., as the cluster center, of R.A.= 186.8110~deg, and decl.= 25.8112~deg, and an average distance of 85.8~pc. Additional 120 member candidates reside in the tidal structures, i.e., outnumbering those in the cluster core. The expansion of escaping members lead to an anisotropy in the velocity field of the tidal tails. Our analysis also serendipitously uncovers an adjacent stellar group, part of which has been cataloged in the literature. We identify 218 member candidates, 10 times more than previously known. This star group is some 65~pc away from, and $\sim400$~Myr younger than, Coma Ber, but is already at the final stage of disruption., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

The afternystagmus that occurs in the dark after gaze fixation during optokinetic stimulation is directed in the opposite direction relative to the previous optokinetic stimulus. The mechanism responsible for such afternystagmus after suppression of optokinetic nystagmus (ASOKN) is unclear. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain it, but none is conclusive. We hypothesized that ASOKN is driven by the interaction of two mechanisms: (1) motion-aftereffect (MAE)-induced eye movements and (2) retinal afterimages (RAIs) produced by fixation during the suppression of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN). We examined the correlation among ASOKN, MAE-induced eye movements, and RAIs in healthy subjects. Adapting stimuli consisted of moving random dot patterns and a fixation spot and their brightness was adjusted to induce different RAI durations. Test patterns were a stationary random dot pattern (to test for the presence of a MAE), a dim homogeneous background (to test for MAE driven eye movements), and a black background (to test for ASOKN and RAIs). MAEs were reported by 16 out of 17 subjects, but only 7 out of 17 subjects demonstrated MAE-induced eye movements. Importantly, ASOKN was only found when these seven subjects reported a RAI after suppression of OKN. Moreover, the duration of ASOKN was longer for high-brightness stimuli compared with low-brightness stimuli, just as RAIs persist longer with increasing brightness. We conclude that ASOKN results from the interaction of MAE-induced eye movements and RAIs.

A novel method of contrast enhancement is proposed for underexposed images, in which heavy noise is hidden. Under low light conditions, images taken by digital cameras have low contrast in dark or bright regions. This is due to a limited dynamic range that imaging sensors have. For these reasons, various contrast enhancement methods have been proposed so far. These methods, however, have two problems: (1) The loss of details in bright regions due to over-enhancement of contrast. (2) The noise is amplified in dark regions because conventional enhancement methods do not consider noise included in images. The proposed method aims to overcome these problems. In the proposed method, a shadow-up function is applied to adaptive gamma correction with weighting distribution, and a denoising filter is also used to avoid noise being amplified in dark regions. As a result, the proposed method allows us not only to enhance contrast of dark regions, but also to avoid amplifying noise, even under strong noise environments., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1811.03280

This work presents an interferometric study of the massive-binary fraction in the Orion Trapezium Cluster with the recently comissioned GRAVITY instrument. We observe a total of 16 stars of mainly OB spectral type. We find three previously unknown companions for $\theta ^1$ Ori B, $\theta ^2$ Ori B, and $\theta ^2$ Ori C. We determine a separation for the previously suspected companion of NU Ori. We confirm four companions for $\theta ^1$ Ori A, $\theta ^1$ Ori C, $\theta ^1$ Ori D, and $\theta ^2$ Ori A, all with substantially improved astrometry and photometric mass estimates. We refine the orbit of the eccentric high-mass binary $\theta ^1$ Ori C and we are able to derive a new orbit for $\theta ^1$ Ori D. We find a system mass of 21.7 $M_{\odot}$ and a period of $53$ days. Together with other previously detected companions seen in spectroscopy or direct imaging, eleven of the 16 high-mass stars are multiple systems. We obtain a total number of 22 companions with separations up to 600 AU. The companion fraction of the early B and O stars in our sample is about 2, significantly higher than in earlier studies of mostly OB associations. The separation distribution hints towards a bimodality. Such a bimodality has been previously found in A stars, but rarely in OB binaries, which up to this point have been assumed to be mostly compact with a tail of wider companions. We also do not find a substantial population of equal-mass binaries. The observed distribution of mass ratios declines steeply with mass, and like the direct star counts, indicates that our companions follow a standard power law initial mass function. Again, this is in contrast to earlier findings of flat mass ratio distributions in OB associations. We exclude collision as a dominant formation mechanism but find no clear preference for core accretion or competitive accretion., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We observed a total of 16 stars of mainly OB spectral type. We find three previously unknown companions for theta(1) Ori B, theta(2) Ori B, and theta(2) Ori C. We determined a separation for the previously suspected companion of NU Ori. We confirm four companions for theta(1) Ori A, theta(1) Ori C, theta(1) Ori D, and theta(2) Ori A, all with substantially improved astrometry and photometric mass estimates. We refined the orbit of the eccentric high-mass binary theta(1) Ori C and we are able to derive a new orbit for theta(1) Ori D. We find a system mass of 21.7 M-circle dot and a period of 53 days. Together with other previously detected companions seen in spectroscopy or direct imaging, eleven of the 16 high-mass stars are multiple systems. We obtain a total number of 22 companions with separations up to 600 AU. The companion fraction of the early B and O stars in our sample is about two, significantly higher than in earlier studies of mostly OB associations. The separation distribution hints toward a bimodality. Such a bimodality has been previously found in A stars, but rarely in OB binaries, which up to this point have been assumed to be mostly compact with a tail of wider companions. We also do not find a substantial population of equal-mass binaries. The observed distribution of mass ratios declines steeply with mass, and like the direct star counts, indicates that our companions follow a standard power law initial mass function. Again, this is in contrast to earlier findings of flat mass ratio distributions in OB associations. We excluded collision as a dominant formation mechanism but find no clear preference for core accretion or competitive accretion.

This paper proposes a novel image contrast enhancement method based on both a noise aware shadow-up function and Retinex (retina and cortex) decomposition. Under low light conditions, images taken by digital cameras have low contrast in dark or bright regions. This is due to a limited dynamic range that imaging sensors have. For this reason, various contrast enhancement methods have been proposed. Our proposed method can enhance the contrast of images without not only over-enhancement but also noise amplification. In the proposed method, an image is decomposed into illumination layer and reflectance layer based on the retinex theory, and lightness information of the illumination layer is adjusted. A shadow-up function is used for preventing over-enhancement. The proposed mapping function, designed by using a noise aware histogram, allows not only to enhance contrast of dark region, but also to avoid amplifying noise, even under strong noise environments., Comment: To appear in IWAIT-IFMIA 2019

A cold high-velocity (HV, $\sim$ 200 km/s) peak was first reported in several Galactic bulge fields based on the APOGEE commissioning observations. Both the existence and the nature of the high-velocity peak are still under debate. Here we revisit this feature with the latest APOGEE DR13 data. We find that most of the low latitude bulge fields display a skewed Gaussian distribution with a HV shoulder. However, only 3 out of 53 fields show distinct high-velocity peaks around 200 km/s. The velocity distribution can be well described by Gauss-Hermite polynomials, except the three fields showing clear HV peaks. We find that the correlation between the skewness parameter ($h_{3}$) and the mean velocity ($\bar{v}$), instead of a distinctive HV peak, is a strong indicator of the bar. It was recently suggested that the HV peak is composed of preferentially young stars. We choose three fields showing clear HV peaks to test this hypothesis using the metallicity, [$\alpha$/M] and [C/N] as age proxies. We find that both young and old stars show HV features. The similarity between the chemical abundances of stars in the HV peaks and the main component indicates that they are not systematically different in terms of chemical abundance or age. In contrast, there are clear differences in chemical space between stars in the Sagittarius dwarf and the bulge stars. Eclipsing binaries provide a unique opportunity to determine fundamental stellar properties. In the era of wide-field cameras and all-sky imaging surveys, thousands of eclipsing binaries have been reported through light curve classification, yet their basic properties remain unexplored due to the extensive efforts needed to follow them up spectroscopically. In this paper we investigate three M2-M3 type double-lined eclipsing binaries discovered by cross-matching eclipsing binaries from the Catalina Sky Survey wtih spectroscopically classified M dwarfs from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope survey data release one and two. Because these three M dwarf binaries are faint, we further acquire radial velocity measurements using GMOS on the Gemini North telescope with R~40000, enabling us to determine the mass and radius of individual stellar components. By jointly fitting the light and radial velocity curves of these systems, we derive the mass and radius of the primary and secondary components of these three systems, in the range between 0.28-0.42 M_sun and 0.29-0.67 R_sun, respectively. Future observations with a high resolution spectrograph will help us pin down the uncertainties in their stellar parameters, and render these systems benchmarks to study m dwarfs, providing inputs to improving stellar models in the low mass regime, or establishing an empirical mass-radius relation for M dwarf stars., Comment: RAA accepted. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1701.05293

A major cause of the paucity of new starting points for drug discovery is the lack of interaction between academia and industry. Much of the global resource in biology is present in universities, whereas the focus of medicinal chemistry is still largely within industry. Open source drug discovery, with sharing of information, is clearly a first step towards overcoming this gap. But the interface could especially be bridged through a scale-up of open sharing of physical compounds, which would accelerate the finding of new starting points for drug discovery. The Medicines for Malaria Venture Malaria Box is a collection of over 400 compounds representing families of structures identified in phenotypic screens of pharmaceutical and academic libraries against the Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite. The set has now been distributed to almost 200 research groups globally in the last two years, with the only stipulation that information from the screens is deposited in the public domain. This paper reports for the first time on 236 screens that have been carried out against the Malaria Box and compares these results with 55 assays that were previously published, in a format that allows a meta-analysis of the combined dataset. The combined biochemical and cellular assays presented here suggest mechanisms of action for 135 (34%) of the compounds active in killing multiple life-cycle stages of the malaria parasite, including asexual blood, liver, gametocyte, gametes and insect ookinete stages. In addition, many compounds demonstrated activity against other pathogens, showing hits in assays with 16 protozoa, 7 helminths, 9 bacterial and mycobacterial species, the dengue fever mosquito vector, and the NCI60 human cancer cell line panel of 60 human tumor cell lines. Toxicological, pharmacokinetic and metabolic properties were collected on all the compounds, assisting in the selection of the most promising candidates for murine proof-of-concept experiments and medicinal chemis

Cortico-basal ganglia circuits are critical for speech and language and are implicated in autism spectrum disorder, in which language function can be severely affected. We demonstrate that in the mouse striatum, the gene Foxp2 negatively interacts with the synapse suppressor gene Mef2c. We present causal evidence that Mef2c inhibition by Foxp2 in neonatal mouse striatum controls synaptogenesis of corticostriatal inputs and vocalization in neonates. Mef2c suppresses corticostriatal synapse formation and striatal spinogenesis, but can itself be repressed by Foxp2 through direct DNA binding. Foxp2 deletion de-represses Mef2c, and both intrastriatal and global decrease of Mef2c rescue vocalization and striatal spinogenesis defects of Foxp2-deletion mutants. These findings suggest that Foxp2-Mef2C signaling is critical to corticostriatal circuit formation. We report the discovery of 2 new Be stars, and re-identify one known Be star in the open cluster NGC 6830. Eleven H-alpha emitters were discovered using the H-alpha imaging photometry of the Palomar Transient Factory Survey. Stellar membership of the candidates was verified with photometric and kinematic information using 2MASS data and proper motions. The spectroscopic confirmation was carried out by using the Shane 3-m telescope at Lick observatory. Based on their spectral types, three H-alpha emitters were confirmed as Be stars with H-alpha equivalent widths > -10 Angstrom. Two objects were also observed by the new spectrograph SED-Machine on the Palomar 60 inch Telescope. The SED-Machine results show strong H-alpha emission lines, which are consistent with the results of the Lick observations. The high efficiency of the SED-Machine can provide rapid observations for Be stars in a comprehensive survey in the future.

Multiple populations revealed in globular clusters (GCs) are important windows to the formation and evolution of these stellar systems. The metal-rich GCs in the Galactic bulge are an indispensable part of this picture, but the high optical extinction in this region has prevented extensive research. In this work, we use the high resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic data from APOGEE to study the chemical abundances of NGC 6553, which is one of the most metal-rich bulge GCs. We identify ten red giants as cluster members using their positions, radial velocities, iron abundances, and NIR photometry. Our sample stars show a mean radial velocity of $-0.14\pm5.47$ km s$^{-1}$, and a mean [Fe/H] of $-0.15\pm 0.05$. We clearly separate two populations of stars in C and N in this GC for the first time. NGC 6553 is the most metal-rich GC where the multiple stellar population phenomenon is found until now. Substantial chemical variations are also found in Na, O, and Al. However, the two populations show similar Si, Ca, and iron-peak element abundances. Therefore, we infer that the CNO, NeNa, and MgAl cycles have been activated, but the MgAl cycle is too weak to show its effect on Mg. Type Ia and Type II supernovae do not seem to have significantly polluted the second generation stars. Comparing with other GC studies, NGC 6553 shows similar chemical variations as other relatively metal-rich GCs. We observed RZ LMi, which is renowned for the extremely (~19d) short supercycle and is a member of a small, unusual class of cataclysmic variables called ER UMa-type dwarf novae, in 2013 and 2016. In 2016, the supercycles of this object substantially lengthened in comparison to the previous measurements to 35, 32, 60d for three consecutive superoutbursts. We consider that the object virtually experienced a transition to the novalike state (permanent superhumper). This observed behavior extremely well reproduced the prediction of the thermal-tidal instability model. We detected a precursor in the 2016 superoutburst and detected growing (stage A) superhumps with a mean period of 0.0602(1)d in 2016 and in 2013. Combined with the period of superhumps immediately after the superoutburst, the mass ratio is not as small as in WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, having orbital periods similar to RZ LMi. By using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) two-dimensional power spectra, we detected possible negative superhumps with a period of 0.05710(1)d. We estimated the orbital period of 0.05792d, which suggests a mass ratio of 0.105(5). This relatively large mass ratio is even above ordinary SU UMa-type dwarf novae, and it is also possible that the exceptionally high mass-transfer rate in RZ LMi may be a result of a stripped core evolved secondary which are evolving toward an AM CVn-type object., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ; includes Supplementary_draft_aph.pdf with somewhat degraded figures
