Die woordestryd oor goddelike inspirasie van alles wat in die Bybel staan, as gevolg van die uitgesproke stellings van Johannes Du Plessis, het tot ‘n krisis gelei wat as baken in die annale van die Ned. Geref. Kerk beskou word. Die meeste van sy standpunte word vandag as waarheid aanvaar en hy het bygedra tot die intellektuele debat oor die Bybel as Woord van God wat vandag nog aangaan. Du Plessis se herkoms, opleiding en verdienste as predikant en saakgelastigde van die Kerk word kortliks bespreek. Hy was die talentvolle seun en enigste kind van 'n Afrikaanse predikant en 'n Engelse vrou, die dogter van 'n sendeling van die LMS. Hy word professor aan die Kweekskool en met kennis opgedoen tydens verdere studie oorsee, het hy gewys op dele van die Bybel wat nie aan goddelike inspirasie toegeskryf kan word nie. Hy het dit ook duidelik gestel dat hy as teoloog en leermeester nie kon glo sonder om te probeer verstaan nie. Hy het sy bevindinge bekend gemaak in Het Zoeklicht, 'n maandblad wat bedoel was om as soeklig te dien om verskillende vorms van “duisternis” in beide godsdiens en die politiek, betref, aan die lig te bring. Oortuig van die waarde van die Hoër Kritiek, het hy dit as sy plig geag om wat hy deur wye leeswerk en kritiese ondersoek rakende die oorsprong, vorm en inhoud van die Ou Testamentiese boeke bekom het, bekend te maak. Artikels van dié aard, eers in De Kerkbode en daarna in Het Zoeklicht, het gelei tot beroering onder behoudende lesers wat gekant was teen enige veranderinge in die prediking. Hulle was veral ontstoke oor sy siening dat die belydenisskrifte wat spruit uit die dae van die Hervorming 500 jaar tevore, oop was vir herformulering. Klagtes dat Du Plessis op 'n gevaarlike pad was, was die begin van wat gelei het tot 'n krisis in die Kerk, en uiteindelik tot 'n buitengewone sinode in 1930 toe hy van sy pos onthef is. Die behoudende reaksie van die meerderheid was dat die Bybel die onfeilbare Woord van God is. Most of the points he raised are accepted as truth today, and started an intellectual debate that is still going on. Information relating to Du Plessis’ origins, training, and achievements as a minister and church official is briefly noted. He was the talented son, and only child of an Afrikaner father and minister of religion, and an English mother, the daughter of an LMS missionary. He became a professor at the Seminary in Stellenbosch, after his studies overseas had caused him to question parts of the Old Testament text that could not be regarded as divinely inspired. He also made it quite clear that believing without trying to understand was not possible for him as a theologian and teacher. He proclaimed his findings in Het Zoeklicht, a monthly magazine intended to serve as a searchlight and an organ to reveal the “darkness” that was still prevalent in both religion and politics. Aware of the value of Higher Criticism of the Old Testament, he regarded it his duty to make known what he had found in reading widely and in critical research on the origins, form and content of the books of the Bible. Articles to this effect published first in De Kerkbode and then in Het Zoeklicht, caused an outcry from conservative readers who were opposed to any changes in the teaching of the church. They were especially enraged by his view that the confessions drawn up by Reformers 500 years earlier, were open for review. Complaints that Du Plessis was on a dangerous path, marked the beginning of what was regarded as a crisis in the Church, and in the end led to Du Plessis being relieved of his post by a special Synod convened in 1930. Aim: Failure of fixation of an ankle fracture is common in bone of poor quality. Improving the strength of fixation could lead to better results. The aim of this study is to evaluate if the pullout strength of a medial malleolus screw can be increased if it is inserted in such a way that the screw engages the posterior metaphyseal cortex of the tibia. Method: Comparative study on 13 cadavers, fixing a medial malleolus osteotomy with a 4.0mm partial threaded cancellous screw. The right ankle of each cadaver was fixed with a screw engaging the posterior metaphysical cortex, the left ankle was fixed with a screw only engaging the trabecular metaphyseal bone. Axial traction was applied to the screw until failure of fixation occurred. Failure being defined as 2mm distraction over the fracture site. Axial traction was applied with a traction scale calibrated in kilograms. Results: In all ankle osteotomies an anatomic reduction was achieved. The mean strength was 87.66N for metaphysical purchase screws, compared to 208.88N for cortical Purchase screws. (p-value 0.002). For screws inserted not engaging the posterior cortex of the tibia, the lowest recorded pullout strength was 15.69N. The maximum recorded pullout strength, for a screw not engaging the cortex, was 181.42N. For screws engaging the posterior tibia cortex the minimum recorded pullout strength was 72.57N and the maximum recorded 414.82N. Conclusion: The results show a significant improvement in the pullout strength of medial malleolus screws inserted to engage the posterior tibia cortex.

Such reform movements are best understood as responses to a discernment of the movement of the Holy Spirit. This is expressed in the ancient prayer for the transformative work of God’s Spirit: Veni, Creator Spiritus! In different periods in history and in particular places such reform movements have been prompted by distinct challenges, concerns and needs. This is illustrated by the various 16th century reformations but also by the Benedictine and Franciscan reformations, alongside many others. The 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation which is expected to be celebrated with thousands of international guests as a world ecumenical event in 2017 is an occasion to think about what is demanded from an “ecclesia semper reformanda” in giving witness to what the triune God is doing in the world today." "Allow me to begin my contribution with a few observations on the current interplay between climate change and food security in the South African context.11 This interplay is appropriately termed the Food-Energy-Water nexus.12 I offer these not as an expert in the field but as a concerned citizen. The archaeology of the region, referred to in scholarly lexicon as the Ancient Near East, is richly endowed with artefacts and monumental architecture of ancient cultures. Such artefacts, as a non-renewable resource are, therefore considered to be a scarce commodity. So also is the context and the provenance of these objects. Once an object’s provenance has been disturbed, it is of no further significant use for academic research, except for aesthetic value. Historically, as well as in the present, we see that humans have exploited this resource for various reasons, with very little regard given to provenance. The impact of forgery, illicit trade and looting are the greatest threat to the value of provenance. Contrary to some arguments, collectors, curators, buyers, looters and certain scholars play a significant role in its destruction. This research reveals to what extent unknown provenance has become a disturbing problem in the study of archaeological artefacts.

Section 23 of the Constitution is an embodiment of fundamental labour rights. Section 23(1) reads as follows: “(1) Everyone has the right to fair labour practices.” The fair labour practice concept is a rather recent development in South African labour law and is it therefore still required to attempt to provide meaning to this concept. It further becomes essential to provide meaning to the concept if it is acknowledged that when this concept was introduced in 1979, the unfairness of the concept was regulated by labour legislation and the Industrial Court’s equity jurisprudence; currently, not only the unfairness of this concept is legislatively regulated but is the fairness of this concept embedded as a constitutional guarantee in the Constitution of South Africa. It has therefore become necessary to determine the exact scope of this constitutional right in order to determine the relation between the legislative concept and the constitutional right and to investigate whether there is any room for an extended view of this right and to which limitations (if any) it should be subjected to. Prior to analysing the constitutional right to fair labour practices, a comprehensive investigation was led into the historical position preceding the introduction of this right. It was found that the history of fair labour practices played an immensely important role in the analysis of this constitutional right. The events, motivations and circumstances which consequently led to the introduction of this right, without any doubt, provided a useful guideline as to the interpretation of the right. The disregard for the human element present in the employment relationship, not only while slavery was in existence but also in the continued policies and mindsets of policy-makers thereafter, could be described as the first element contributing to the unfairness of labour practices. English: Advertising constitutes one of the most enduring and influential genres of mass media communication and has, as such, attracted attention from various academic disciplines, including linguistics and its subfield sociolinguistics. This dissertation departs from an argument put forward by Crook (2004), which posits that one of the primary objectives of advertising is the attempt to establish and reinforce positive associations with the advertised brand, in order to gain an advantage over competitors. To analyse this function, the project combines a range of pragmatic and discourse analytic methodologies, under a relevance theoretic framework, in order to conduct an empirical analysis of the role of intertextuality in print advertising. In addition, the study aims to uncover the manner in which intertextuality is combined with direct/logical vs. indirect/emotional claims, by using Simpson's (2001) reason and tickle constructs. The results support the conclusion that copywriters use intertextuality to foster positive associations with the advertised brand, but also suggest that direct - or reason - product claims serve to guide readers' inferences about the relationship between the intertext and the advertised product/service. Based on these findings, the researcher also makes specific recommendations for future analyses in the field of critical discourse analysis., Afrikaans: Reklame is een van die mees blywende en invloedryke genres van massamedia kommunikasie en het, as sodanig, die aandag getrek van verskeie akademiese dissiplines, insluitend linguistiek en sy subfield sosiolinguistiek. Hierdie verhandeling vertrek vanaf 'n argument na vore gebring deur Crook (2004), wat voorstel dat een van reklame se primêre doelwitte die vas stel en versterk van positiewe assosiasies met die geadverteerde handelsmerk is, ten einde 'n voordeel bo mededingers te bekry. Om hierdie funksie te analiseer, kombineer hierdie projek 'n verskeidenheid pragmatiese en diskoers analitiese metodes, onder 'n relevant teoretiese raamwerk, ten einde 'n empierese ontleding te doen van die rol van intertekstualiteit in gedrukte media advertensies. English: The following dissertation reports on a research study of the lifestyle magazines For Him Magazine and Cosmopolitan. Quantitative and qualitative methods were combined in an investigation of linguistic patterns which serve to construct a particular perspective on masculinity and femininity. The quantitative analyses focused on identifying patterns in the distribution and connotation of various words. The qualitative analyses focused on various grammatical and semantic features in specific articles of both magazines. The results suggest that both magazines tend to hone masculinity and femininity to certain subjects and descriptions. Cosmopolitan, however, might be characterised by a slightly more flexible discourse. In addition, this study also contains suggestions on how research of this nature may be incorporated into an academic course for students of Applied Linguistics., Afrikaans: Die volgende navorsingstuk rapporteer die resultate van ‘n projek aangaande die diskoerskenmerke van die leefstyl-tydskrifte Cosmopolitan en For Him Magazine. Die studie kombineer kwantitatiewe en kwalitatiewe metodes, met die oog op die ondersoek van linguistiese patrone wat gebruik word om ‘n spesifieke perspektief op manlikheid en vroulikeheid te skep. Die kwantitatiewe metodes het gefokus op die verspreiding en konnotasie van verskeie woorde. Die kwalitatiewe metodes het gefokus op verskeie grammatiese en semantiese patrone in spesifieke artikels van beide tydskrifte. Die resultate stel voor dat beide tydskrifte ‘n noue perspektief op manlikheid en vroulikheid skep, deur te konsentreer op spesifieke belangstellings en beskrywings. Nie te min, blyk dit wel dat Cosmopolitan deur ‘n meer buigsame diskoers gekenmerk word. Verder mik hierdie navorsingstuk ook om voorstelle te bied oor maniere hoe navorsing van hierdie aard geïnkorporeer kan word in ‘n akademiese kursus vir studente in Toegepaste Linguistiek.

MSSA (Mittal Steel South Africa), which produces electrogalvanised steel for the local automobile industry, experiences a problem with white spot formation when their steel is phosphated. The addition of nickel inhibits white spot formation but produces an unacceptable discolouration of the surface layer. Furthermore the locally produced steel exhibits blister formation when heated to 300ºC. The substrates, electrogalvanised coatings, phosphated samples and annealed samples are studied with Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, as well as X-ray diffraction. Combining the results allows for an interpretation of the morphology, topography, composition, crystalline structure, quantitative depth profile as well as the spatial distribution of the elements The white spot formation on the electrogalvanised surfaces is closely related to the presence of contaminants on the electrogalvanised surface and at the interface between the substrate and the electrogalvanised coatings. The accelerated phosphate reaction results in complete dissolution of the electrogalvanised surface, thereby exposing the iron substrate. The white spot consists of an anomalous protruding perimeter with elongated crystals that grow towards the centre of the spot, present inside the spot. Partial dissolution is required in order for the phosphate process to occur. Complex phosphates deposit on the surface comprised of various cations, such as zinc, manganese and nickel. The zinc dissolution is the preferred reaction and therefore there is a slight enrichment of nickel in the sublayers of the phosphate. The manganese deposited on the surface must not be confused with the manganese present in the substrate. The addition of other cations to the electrogalvanised layer results in a change in the structure of the phosphated layer. English: The oxidation behaviour of the segregated MoN layer on the Fe(100)-3.5wt% Mo-N substrate was investigated in this study. Previous studies suggested the synergetic segregation of the Mo and N from the Fe(100)-3.5wt% Mo-N specimen. It has also been shown that the segregated Mo and N form a MoN surface compound. As an alloy element in stainless steels, the Mo aids in the inhibition of the oxidation and thus prevents corrosion Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) was used to obtain the experimental results. For this study the oxidation of a Fe(100) specimen and a Fe(100)-3.5wt% Mo-N specimen were investigated to establish a point of reference to describe the oxidation behaviour of the segregated MoN layer. Linear temperature ramping was used to segregate the Mo and N from the Fe(100)-3.5wt% Mo-N specimen. The specimens were exposed to an oxygen environment at various temperatures. The partial pressure of the oxygen was monitored with a mass spectrometer and was kept constant at 2 x 10-10 torr. The Auger peak-to-peak heights for the relevant elements in the specimens were measured as a function of the exposure time. Upon oxidation, the low energy Fe AES peak (47 eV) undergoes shape changes. The iron oxide has a dual peak with 42 eV and 52 eV kinetic energy respectively. The Fe(100) specimen surface reacted rapidly with the oxygen environment at room temperature to form an iron oxide, as depicted by the change in the low energy Fe AES peak. The exposures performed at 100°C and 200°C also resulted in oxide formation although the extent of the oxidation decreased with an increase in the temperature. Above 300°C indication of the Mo and N reacting with the oxygen environment. At 100°C and 200°C less oxide formation was detected and above 300°C there was only oxygen adsorption. The segregated MoN layer had a markedly different response to the oxygen exposure. The oxygen exposure performed at room temperature had a strikingly different course of the 0 Auger peak-to-peak, Afrikaans: Die oksidasie gedrag van die gesegregeerde MoN laag op die Fe(100)-3.5wt% Mo-N substraat is in hierdie studie bestudeer. Left atrial thrombus with systemic emboli is a serious complication and economic burden in patients with mitral stenosis. At present long-term anticoagulation with warfarin is indicated in patients with rheumatic mitral valve disease only in the presence of atrial fibrillation or with previous systemic emboli, In an exploratory study we found the severity of the mitral valve lesion alone not to be a risk factor for Heft atrial thrombi in mitral stenosis, but when complicated by atrial fibrillation or Heftatrial enlargement, especially ≥ 4.8 cm, there appears to be a higher risk for the development of Heftatrial thrombi. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for Heftatrial thrombi in patients with mitral stenosis and to identify criteria for antlcoagulant therapy to prevent thromboembolism, One hundred and forty six patients with predominant mitral stenosis (mitral valve area less than 2.0 cm2) and on no anticoagulant therapy were examined by transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography for the detection of Heftatrial thrombi. Age, sex, rhythm, left atrial size, mitral valve area, spontaneous echo contrast, mitral regurgitation and Beft ventricular ejection fraction were investigated as possible risk factors for left atrial thrombi. Both a univariate am multivariate analysis of the data were performed. Left atrial thrombi were detected in 26 (I7.8%) of the 146 patients. Through multivarlate analysis, atrial· fibrillation, left atrial size ≥ 4.8 cm, Heft ventricular ejection fraction <50%) and moderate or severe spontaneous echo contrast have been found to be independent risk factors for Heft atrial thrombi, and should be included as indications for anticoagulant therapy to prevent thromboembolism.

English: The 'thesis' in this study is that the education occurrence, as a typical human phenomenon, is at times adequately realised and at times inadequately. In analysing the educative activities of teachers and pupils in the Senior Secondary school phase an attempt is made to find which activities can be regarded as achieving the aim of education and which not. In order to achieve the above set goal it was necessary to analyse the theme in chapter one and to account for the methodology to be used. The actual problem was stated as well as the purpose of the study. An attempt to formulate the qualitative hypothesis was also undertaken. In chapter two a cursory historic and anthropologic analysis is made of the Black man's and therefore the Black child's culture. Because this can actually not be done by a person from another culture than the Black culture, the author allows the Black person to speak and formulate this by referring to the literature of Black authors. In chapter three the Secondary school in Lebowa is investigated as part of the life-world where Black children design their 'world'. The Senior Secondary school in Lebowa is, for the purpose of this study, regarded as the education situation wherein the educative activities take place. The essences of the pedagogic activity structures are described in chapter four. The twelve essences of the pedagogic activity structures are examined to determine which educative activities are adequately realised and which are not. The analysis of questionnaire answers of Senior Secondary School children determined whether this realisation was adequate or not. In the last chapter each of the essences. is analysed and according to the tendency of the respondent answers the pedagogic importance of each of the essences is emphasised. The recommendations made in this chapter refer mostly to the teachers and teacher training.
