The author's dissertation is a deeply personal and culturally rich exploration of their experience with infertility, specifically focusing on in vitro fertilization (IVF). Presented in Spanglish, the narrative delves into the emotional, physical, and societal dimensions of infertility, challenging norms and advocating for the destigmatization of infertility within Latinx communities. The text reflects on the transformative impact of IVF on the author's body and identity, highlighting the impact that comes with the label of a "Latinx Infertile Female Body" (LIFB) as well as the toll of infertility treatments on the body, navigating faith, and reshaping societal expectations. The term "unpregnancy," a term born out of the author's introspective reflection and struggle to find a place in a dichotomous world, is introduced. Unpregnancy encapsulates the liminal space where a body is neither definitively pregnant nor free from pregnancy's physical and emotional changes. Further, the author calls for recognition beyond reproductive capabilities and challenges societal expectations imposed on LIFBs. In the dissertation, the author directly addresses the stigma, racialization, and gender discrimination faced by LIFBs within the medical system. This article contributes to the study of one of the most crucial cultural phenomena in the configuration of Nation-states, "the postal service". The question that guides the exhibition and part of the research behind it, goes on the way of understanding the society that uses this service, by the complexion, composition, structuring of a means of communication such as postal service in Colombia, in the late XIX century and early XX century. To address this question, the research is based upon updates to the exercise of historical criticism, conceptual developments of communication theories, network analysis and geographic information systems. Thus, with an orientation of disciplinary convergence, through the "historiographical operation", the archive itself is created, the information provided by the "traces" is systematized, the exercise of "criticism" is carried out and conclusions such as the one presented here are reached: that the design of its administration in relation to the flow of "information" that it circulated, constrained it to structure a communication network, whose correlations and tensions studied, show that it followed a systemic behavior., O artigo contribui ao estudo de um dos fenómenos culturais mais decisivos na configuração dos Estados-nação, “o correio”. A pergunta que guia a exposição e parte da pesquisa que tem por trás de ela, é, na via da compreensão da sociedade que o utiliza, pela compleição, a composição, a estruturação de um serviço e meio de comunicação como o correi, na Colômbia, por volta do final do século XIX e inícios do século XX. Die Masterarbeit untersucht die Lebenserinnerungen von Dr. Ernst Verdross, einem politischen Gefangenen im Konzentrationslager Dachau, aus einer europäisch-ethnologischen Perspektive. Der Fokus liegt auf der Analyse seiner autobiografischen Aufzeichnungen, insbesondere seiner Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen im KZ Dachau. Durch die detaillierte Betrachtung der Lagerstrafen, der sozialen Kontrolle und der täglichen Entwürdigungen wird aufgezeigt, wie das nationalsozialistische Regime systematisch Gewalt und Unterdrückung ausübte. Die Arbeit beleuchtet auch, wie Verdross seine traumatischen Erlebnisse verarbeitete und welche langfristigen Auswirkungen diese auf seine politische und persönliche Entwicklung hatten. By showing such relationships from different perspectives, Flora Annie Steel has proved that such unions were unwanted and undesirable to both the concerned communities in British India.

We analyze the semeiotic material practices of Ecuadoran cultural magazi-ne Hélice [Helix] (1926), its configuration as a device and the way its content depicts social meanings by connecting visual and verbal discourses. Emphasis is made on the graphic art of the magazine, proper to vanguards, as well as on the collective project of its collaborators, fundamental elements to understand the change from an aristocra-tic culture to that of social realism and indigenism. In the end, there is a brief revision of some articles, literary texts and cartoons published in the magazine, among which Un hombre muerto a puntapiés [A man killed by kicking] by Pablo Palacio stands out., Analizamos las prácticas semióticas materiales de la revista cultural ecua-toriana Hélice (1926), su configuración como dispositivo y la forma en que sus con-tenidos reflejan significados sociales mediante la conexión entre discurso visual y discurso verbal. Se hace énfasis en el arte gráfico de la publicación, propio de las van-guardias, así como en el proyecto colectivo de sus colaboradores, elementos funda-mentales para entender el paso de la cultura aristócrata a la del realismo social y el indigenismo. Finalmente, se hace una breve revisión de algunos de los artículos, tex-tos literarios y caricaturas publicados, entre los que destacan los primeros cuentos de Un hombre muerto a puntapiés, de Pablo Palacio.

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 triggered several policies to minimize infection. However, independently of their effectiveness, several social and economic sectors such as the touristic one, have been greatly affected by these policies. This has been even more evident in towns where tourism is the main economic activity. This article discusses the consequences of tourism restrictions in a pueblo mágico of Mexico, where the population is mainly indigenous (masewal) and faces high socioeconomic marginalization. Through an ethnographic methodology based on unstructured interviews, participant observation, and naturalistic observation, the efficiency and impact of municipal town hall decisions to prevent contagious by COVID-19 in Cuetzalan del Progreso was evaluated. The results show that the policies did not achieve full compliance due to inhabitants not participating in the policy-making process. Policies’ ineffectiveness is explained by its misalignment with inhabitants’ economic needs and by ignoring their high dependence on tourism for their livelihood. Restrictions disproportionately affected the poorest people who depend on their daily labor for income. Despite this situation, the municipality of Cuetzalan del Progreso demonstrated territorial resilience by designing communitarian strategies for social strengthening during the COVID-19 pandemic., La pandemia causada por el COVID-19 ha llevado a tomar diversas medidas que puedan reducir la probabilidad de contagio; sin embargo, e independientemente de su efectividad, se han visto afectados varios sectores sociales y económicos, como el turístico. Esto ha sido particularmente complicado en poblaciones cuya principal actividad económica es el turismo. Este artículo pretende develar las implicaciones que han tenido las restricciones al turismo en un “pueblo mágico” de México, cuya población es principalmente originaria (masewal) y presenta altos niveles de marginación socioeconómica. A través de una metodología etnográfica basada en entrevistas no estructuradas, observación participante y observación natural, se evaluó la eficiencia e impacto de las decisiones tomadas por el ayuntamiento municipal para evitar los contagios por COVID-19 en Cuetzalan del Progreso. Los resultados muestran que las medidas no se cumplieron completamente debido a que las decisiones no se tomaron con la participación de los habitantes ni se tuvieron en consideración sus carencias económicas y su alta dependencia del turismo como medio de subsistencia. Por otro lado, las restricciones afectaron principalmente la economía de las personas más pobres, quienes dependen de sus labores diarias para obtener ingresos. A pesar de la situación, el municipio de Cuetzalan del Progreso se caracteriza por su resiliencia territorial, lo que se reflejó en el diseño de estrategias comunitarias para el fortalecimiento social.

Ethnic Tourism and Cultural Dynamics in the Terra Indígena do Rio Gregório, Acre, Brazil. Considering the process of touristification observed in many indigenous communities in Brazil, our goal in this study is to investigate the tensions associated with the rescue/invention dynamics of Yawanawa culture in the Terra Indígena do Rio Gregório in Acre, Brazil. The research, based on an ethnography, assumes that tourism consumes cultural traits of a people, while contributing to rebuild, produce and maintain the local culture. The main results suggest a wide hybridism associated with the process of social composition in Yawanawa collective, because the same need for cultural self-affirmation that justified the expulsion of missionaries and the rescue of traditions is challenged by a capitalist scenario from which these people can not escape, even being in the middle of the Amazon Forest. The relation with white man is complex in several senses, especially in those linked to the territory, because he is part of who Yawanawa are, to the ethnicity, due to the need for constant cultural preservation / updating due to the contact with other peoples, and to the economy, which turns into consumption the forms of indigenous existence, onde they need to qualify to attract tourists and earn resources for the maintenance of traditional communities, Teniendo en cuenta el proceso de turistificación observado en muchas comunidades indígenas de Brasil, el objetivo de este estudio es investigar las consecuencias del turismo étnico sobre la dinámica de rescate/invención de la cultura Yawanawa en la Tierra Indígena de Rio Gregório, en Acre (Brasil). La investigación se realizó en base a la etnografía y asumió que el turismo consume las características culturales de un pueblo, al mismo tiempo en que contribuye a reconstruir, producir y mantener la cultura local. Los principales resultados sugieren un hibridismo asociado al proceso de conformación social en el coletivo Yawanawa, pues la misma necesidad de autoafirmación cultural que justificó la expulsión de misioneros y el rescate de las tradiciones se ve desafiada por un escenario capitalista, del cual este pueblo no puede escapar, aún estando en plena Selva Amazónica. La relación con el hombre blanco es compleja en diversos sentidos, asociados a la etnia y a la economía. En el primer caso se cuentan principalmente los ligados al territorio, que es parte de lo que son los Yawanawa, y a la necesidad de preservación/actualización cultural constante debido al contacto con otros pueblos. En el caso de la economía, el hombre blanco transforma en consumo las formas de existencia indígena y precisan calificarse para atraer turistas y derivar recursos para mantener las comunidades tradicionales.

This article revisits Anthony Smith's landmark collection Myths and Memories of the Nation (1999) from the perspective of recent developments in cultural memory studies. It argues for a more clearly demarcated distinction between myths and memories which acknowledges cultural memory as a site of new experiential perspectives that often work against the authority of myths, seen as the unquestioned truths about the collective past. Drawing on studies of modern memory cultures, it presents a dynamic and generative model that construes memory in terms of cultural practices of remembrance. It shows that memory is not an unchanging legacy but rather a malleable resource for making shared stories about the past. Where Halbwachs (1925) presumed that social frameworks precede and shape memory, remembrance is presented here as a cultural force that helps to redefine social frameworks and to create links between hitherto unconnected imagined communities.

With the increasing infusion of information systems through organizations, a dynamic understanding of the relationship between cultural values and artifacts is critical. This paper responds to calls to explore organizational culture from a dynamic view rather than the traditional static approach. We performed a case study using grounded theory principles of a digital transformation of a large, acute-care hospital in Australia. Our analysis reveals new insights into the dynamic relationship between the values of the new system (artifact) and the values of the organization, referred to as retroactive and proactive realization respectively. We extend past research by developing a process model that reveals how different types of culture work – the actions and doings through which culture is created, maintained, and disrupted – are invoked during realization processes. This research deepens our understanding of the realization process and the alignment literature with implications for research and practice.

[Abstract] The objective of this chapter is to understand the formal and informal cultural manifestations produced by public, private and collective institutions. The analysis hopes to contribute to the development of territorial planning that addresses the cultural dynamics existing in cities’ public spaces with the involvement of the residents.

Cet article présente les faits saillants d’une recherche de terrain effectuée à Kuujjuaq (Nunavik) en septembre 2016. Son principal objectif est de dresser un portrait général de la place du chien dans cette communauté, tant auprès des Inuit que des non-Inuit. Si la place du chien dans la culture inuit traditionnelle est bien connue et documentée, celle que le chien d’aujourd’hui occupe depuis que les Inuit se sont sédentarisés, qu’ils utilisent la motoneige et qu’ils partagent leur milieu de vie avec des non-Inuit demeure mal comprise. En questionnant la place culturelle et sociale du chien dans une communauté où les populations Inuit et non-Inuit cohabitent, cette recherche tente de faire ressortir les différentes dynamiques reliées aux chiens et vise à acquérir une meilleure compréhension de ce que sont les chiens pour les habitants de Kuujjuaq actuellement. Cet article conclut que les ressources destinées aux chiens et à leur gestion sont limitées et toujours axées sur une perspective de santé et de sécurité humaines, et que les chiens de la communauté occupent une place oscillant entre appréciation et répulsion qui se définit selon le contexte dans lequel on les retrouve et les fonctions qu’ils occupent., This article presents the highlights of field research carried out in Kuujjuaq (Nunavik) in September 2016. Its main objective is to create a general portrait of the place that dogs occupy in this community, among both Inuit and non-Inuit. Although the dog’s place in traditional Inuit culture is well known and documented, the place he has occupied since Inuit have settled and began using snowmobiles and sharing their living environment with non-Inuit remains poorly understood. By questioning the cultural and social place of the dog in a community where Inuit and non-Inuit live together, this research attempts to highlight the different dynamics related to dogs and gain a better understanding of what dogs are for the locals of Kuujjuaq. This article concludes that resources for dogs and their management are limited and still focused on health and human security, and that dogs in the community occupy a position that oscillates between appreciation and repulsion—a position shaped by cultural and community contexts.

The interpretative-symbolic perspective is one among many ways to interpret the cultural dynamics present within organizations. The literature reviewed in specialized data bases shows that this perspective's main postulate is the interpretation of second order performed on organizational symbols in order to identify the surplus of meaning or what is commonly known as the sense of symbolic elements. It surpases the postulates of other paradigms of study related to the way in whoch values are materialized; and the interpretation of first order we give to basic postulations shared within organizations or what is commonly known as the literal meaning of symbolic elements. The end pursued by this paper is to embark the postulates and concepts about the interpretative-symbolic paradigm and present a model which gathers the elements regarded on the subject, thus facilitating the understanding and application of this perspective to future research and organizational analysis., A perspectiva interpretativa-simbólica é uma forma de analisar as dinâmicas culturais presentes nas organizações. A revisão da literatura nas bases de dados especializadas mostra que a principal postulado desta perspectiva é a interpretação de segunda ordem feita aos símbolos da organização para identificar o excedente de sentido, ou o que é comumente conhecido como o sentido dos elementos simbólicos . La finalidad del artículo es abarcar los postulados y conceptos acerca del paradigma interpretativo-simbólico y exponer un modelo que reúne los elementos trabajados sobre el tema, para facilitar la comprensión y la aplicación de esta perspectiva en investigaciones y análisis organizacionales.

The interpretative-symbolic perspective is one among many ways to interpret the cultural dynamics present within organizations. The literature reviewed in specialized data bases shows that this perspective's main postulate is the interpretation of second order performed on organizational symbols in order to identify the surplus of meaning or what is commonly known as the sense of symbolic elements. It surpases the postulates of other paradigms of study related to the way in whoch values are materialized; and the interpretation of first order we give to basic postulations shared within organizations or what is commonly known as the literal meaning of symbolic elements. The end pursued by this paper is to embark the postulates and concepts about the interpretative-symbolic paradigm and present a model which gathers the elements regarded on the subject, thus facilitating the understanding and application of this perspective to future research and organizational analysis., A perspectiva interpretativa-simbólica é uma forma de analisar as dinâmicas culturais presentes nas organizações. A revisão da literatura nas bases de dados especializadas mostra que a principal postulado desta perspectiva é a interpretação de segunda ordem feita aos símbolos da organização para identificar o excedente de sentido, ou o que é comumente conhecido como o sentido dos elementos simbólicos . The central question of this research project is: how are contemporary cultural dynamics, characterised by technological, intercultural and globalising developments, manifested in the contemporary theatre and how does the theatre itself contribute to these cultural dynamics? The research is organised around four case studies about the operation of theatre institutions (companies, venues, theatre education and theatre policy). Henk Havens is a lecturer at one of the studied theatre institutions, the Maastricht Theatre Academy. The other three institutions are the Flemish theatre company Toneelhuis Antwerp, the Verkadefabriek venue in ’s-Hertogenbosch and the Dutch theatre policy between 1945 and 2015. The study is seen as a contribution to the discourse on post-dramatic theatre (Hans-Thies Lehmann, 1999). Among Havens’ conclusions are that theatre and performance are becoming more intercultural, inter-media and international than Lehman foresaw in 1999, and that of the four case studies, the Dutch government with its theatre policy relates the least organically to the contextual cultural dynamics.

This article aims to present a critical reading of the Hierarchical Model of Culture (HMC) which, based on non-historical notions of culture and rooted in an essentialist and elitist distinction of the judgment of taste, subdivides culture in a hierarchical ranking of classical culture, mass culture and popular culture. By highlighting cultural diversity and the processes of cultural interaction inherent in contemporary societies, it seeks theoretical reflections that suggest public cultural policies from the standpoint of a project of Cultural Democracy for the purpose of democratic radicalization. We have therefore concluded that a Cultural Democracy project for public cultural policies should consider the context of cultural interaction, the different actors involved, the power relations present in the very idea of public cultural policies, and also seek to maximize public participation in political decision-making spaces., O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar uma leitura crítica ao Modelo Hierarquizado deCultura (MHC), o qual, a partir de noções a-históricas de cultura, e enraizado num processo de distinção essencialista e elitista do juízo de gosto, subdivide e hierarquiza a cultura em Cultura Erudita, Cultura de Massas e Cultura Popular. This article investigates cultural dynamics on the northeast Tibetan Plateau with a case study of the Mangghuer people of the Sanchuan (Three Valleys) Region of Minhe Hui and Tu Autonomous County (Qinghai Province, China). I focus on models of spatialisation'the ways in which the physical landscape is perceived, conceptualised and made meaningful. In the Mangghuer context, such models basically construe the landscape as being enlivened by flows and accumulations of positive and negative energies or entities. After providing a detailed description of this model, I attempt to locate it within a wider comparative framework of three broad models of spatialisation employed on the Tibetan Plateau: geomantic; mandalic; and itinerant. Based on this examination, I argue that the cultural dynamics of the region are not based on ethnic distinctions, but rather on the transportation of models across ethnic and other boundaries.

The subject of this thesis is the computational modeling of the transmission of cultural information and of the resulting emergent cultural dynamics---the formation, maintenance, and change of culture. The main premise is that this subject requires a two-component research program: (1) the detailed study of the transmission of cultural information during social interactions, and (2) an uptake of these results to analyze the emerging phenomena at the level of societies. We adopt the view that computational modeling is a particularly promising tool for addressing the second component, while it can also support fields such as psychology and cognitive science in addressing the first component. The reasons for this are that computational models offer (1) an appropriate language for precisely describing mechanisms at all relevant levels of analysis (i.e. intra-personal, inter-personal, and societal-level mechanisms) and (2) a promising opportunity to consider all of these levels simultaneously. The consequence is that computational models can contribute to a refinement of the models or theories they represent, and they can be used to rigorously explore the implications of these models or theories on varying scales. We rely on the social-psychological grounding model of cultural transmission, which provides a detailed model of cultural transmission during social interactions, in constructing computational models of cultural transmission and dynamics. The research questions we address are (1) how can the grounding model of cultural transmission be translated into computational models of cultural transmission and dynamics, and (2) how can these computational models contribute to the refinement of the grounding model of cultural transmission and to the understanding of cultural dynamics. Change is hard but senior leaders must master the task of cultural change management to keep their organizations viable in the future. Leaders must realize that change will often be met with resistance by the organization because the organization strives to maintain consistency and stability. Also, leaders must understand the importance of organizational climate and culture when introducing change to prevent a reduction in morale and organizational effectiveness. Leaders must sell change through a persuasive communications campaign to effectively ensure that change takes hold in the organization. While military leaders are well educated about leadership principles, they should be given more education in cultural climate and cultural dynamics. This project will use the joint Army/Air Force Joint Fires Observer (JFO) initiative to explore the need for mastering change leadership in the military., USAWC Strategy Research Project.

The author considers that it is more fruitful to examine it on the basis of real cases. From this perspective he gives a « biography » of Halloween, a celebration based on both an original account that affirms its millenary existence and a recent story made of successive transformations. He studies its evolution from its appearance in Modern Times in the Anglo-Irish islands to its implantation in the United States and Canada in the late 19th century and to its present-day avatars. Dans ce texte, je présente, dans une perspective libérale, quelques réflexions sur la dynamique culturelle dans le contexte de la mondialisation. Dans un premier temps, je fais une mise au point terminologique qui vise à préciser le contenu du concept de mondialisation culturelle. Dans un deuxième temps, j’analyse l’interférence du phénomène de la mondialisation avec quelques dimensions de la dynamique culturelle dans le monde contemporain, dimensions qui réfèrent 1) aux processus de communication et d’information, 2) à la question linguistique et 3) aux politiques culturelles et au rôle de l’État dans la construction de l’identité culturelle. Mon objectif est d’apporter des éléments d’interprétation du fonctionnement du marché mondial de la culture, du contexte dans lequel il opère et de ses effets afin de montrer que le discours critique qui entoure aujourd’hui le phénomène de la mondialisation, et qui met l’accent sur l’érosion des cultures singulières et sur l’américanisation du monde, devrait être relativisé.

Cultural dynamics are key to success in counter insurgency (CI) operations. Many lessons from previous CI operations provide valuable insight into future operations. However, no two CI operations are the same. The difference is largely cultural. Because the people are the basic element of the Clausewitizian Trinity, cultural considerations are the underlying determinant of success. Cultural dynamics provide keys to behavior. They impart insight about beliefs, what is important, what has value, what people will fight and die for, what conditions they are willing to cope with to gain their objective, etc. The Philippine Insurrection provides an excellent example of the successful use of cultural dynamics to defeat an Insurgency. Operational art focuses on the military aspects of war: however, one must interpret its scope to include the cultural aspect in each of the elements. Without this dimension, operational art is left without its key. The people. In sum, a study of cultural dynamics reveals some of the most important aspects of how and why people will fight- information operational commanders must consider when planning operations.
