Critical reflexivity is a relatively recent strand in journalism studies. It has its advocates, but there are few models. This article offers one possible model, of one moment of practice: an interview with the mother-in-law of an Australian Indigenous woman who died an avoidable death in prison. The critically reflexive approach taken in this research accommodates the individual, social, objective and subjective elements in a practice, and uses the tools provided by Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice and Donald Schon's work on reflective practice and the reflective practitioner. Together, these approaches provide different but complementary conceptual, analytical, practice-based and narrative tools for making journalism practice, and journalists in the practice, an object of study. Critical reflexivity, by adding an inside perspective, is a valid method by which to add to the range of journalism studies that examine journalism from the outside. Such research allows for an inter-weaving of context, self, others, relationships, theory, history, facts, values and experiences, expanding and enriching our understanding of journalism practice and its place in society.

This article contents that the Australian criminal justice system is crimogenic to the extent that it fosters and compounds Indigenous anger. It explores a range of issues, including violence and deaths in custody, in light of the institutional, political and historical factors that shape the criminal justice justice system, and their relationship to Indigenous anger.

The long list of shocking cases of Aboriginal deaths in custody exposed by the Royal Commission provided a public understanding of the processes of racism in the criminal justice system and Australian society more generally. The stories of the deaths in custody were the incontrovertible stories of institutional racism, of human tragedy and monumental inhumanity. Some cases showed profound callousness, others simple indifference. The current tragedy is that so many of the circumstances leading to deaths in custody, and identified by the RCADIC, are still routine occurrences. At the broadest level, the political conditions of the late 1990s and the new century have not been conducive in Australia to effective reform of the criminal justice system. There is little doubt that we have moved into a more punitive period in relation to criminal justice responses, and whatever impetus there was to reform in the early 1990s has largely evaporated. We see this drift into ‘law and order’ responses manifested in a range of areas including increased police powers, ‘zero tolerance’ style laws which increase the use of arrest for minor offences, greater levels of bail refusal and longer periods of imprisonment for a range of offences. However, on the positive side there has been a renaissance in Indigenous justice institutions. These provide the potential for significant change in the criminal justice system, and an opportunity for greater recognition of the aspirations of Indigenous people.

This chapter explores how the economics of news production, and the news values of the media, align with the interests of politicians in representing riots in Indigenous communities as the product of irrationality, lawlessness, or passive victimhood. This chapter also documents the failure of politicans and journalists to acknowledge the role that Indigenous community anger at deaths in custody, and perceived injustices by the police, have played in these riots and demonstrations.

Policing in Indigenous communities is an issue that demands attention to a range of broad political, socio-economic, cultural and historical contexts, as well as the more mundane matters of police operational concern. Given the complexity of the topic, this chapter will be selective and, from necessity, concentrate relatively briefly on a few key themes. They include the following: · The background to the contemporary relationship between police and Indigenous people. · A discussion of some of the key drivers for reform including the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCADIC), and more recently Aboriginal Justice Advisory Councils (AJACs) and the development of Aboriginal Justice Agreements. · A discussion of some of the key policing approaches specific to Indigenous communities such as Aboriginal liaison officers and Aboriginal community police. · A discussion of some of the key interface issues between police and community including the development of Indigenous community justice mechanisms.

They also promote a scholarship of engagement. This article documents the learning experiences of students on a Deaths in Prison Custody capstone service learning course. Though such a criminal justice course requires significant staff input and involves some loss of educational control, it has many benefits including enhanced learning, meaningful service, public value, and civic engagement. The focus on this article is on student learning experiences. It outlines how the pragmatic focus of such a course made knowledge and student learning relevant and actionable. It also describes how the deliberately unstructured design of the course, together with its emphasis on pubic value, encouraged autonomous and self-directed learning, prompting the students to take greater ownership of their learning.

non-peer-reviewed, Foreword The absence of reliable, comprehensive information on deaths in custody within this jurisdiction has long stuck me as lamentable. This project emerged from a conversa-tion between Prof. Shane Kilcommins and me in 2014 in which we discussed my de-sire to rectify the information deficit in this regard. Unfortunately, given the limited re-sources available to my office, this was not work which I could undertake myself. With characteristic enthusiasm, Prof. Kilcommins suggested that the School of Law in the University of Limerick would be in a position to provide academic support to such a project. Supported by two academic members of staff, Prof. Shane Kilcommins and Dr. Eimear Spain, ten fourth year law students were invited to participate. On meeting the students, Roisin Cahill, Blathnaid Christian O Shea, Maire Ciepierski , Caoilinn Doran, Cillian Flavin, Niall Foley, Michelle Kavanagh, Luke Mulcahy, Rachel O'Carroll and Stephen Strauss Walsh, I was immediately struck by their interest, willingness to par-ticipate and their broad knowledge. The students worked diligently and with great en-thusiasm and contributed in two important ways: conducting an extensive literature review on deaths in custody and designing a database based on international best practice. This database will be an important resource for my office and the state in the years to come, informing stakeholders and it is hoped, public policy. As a proud adjunct Professor in the School of Law, I was also delighted to note the very real benefits which accrued to the students who worked on this project. Participa-tion gave them an opportunity to synthesise existing knowledge and apply the analyti-cal and research skills developed during their time in UL in a real world scenario. I hope that this experience is one which the students will long remember, cementing their love of and respect for the law and public service.
