Cadmium mercury selenide (CdHgSe) nanocrystals exhibit a unique combination of low-energy optical absorption and emission, which can be tuned from the visible to the infrared range through both quantum confinement and adjustment of their composition. Owing to this advantage, such nanocrystals have been studied as a promising narrow-band infrared light emitter. However, the electroluminescence of CdHgSe-based nanocrystals has remained largely unexplored, despite their potential for emitting light in the telecom wavelength range. Further benefits to their optical properties are expected from their shape control, in particular the formation of 2D nanocrystals, as well as from a proper design of their heterostructures. In this work, a colloidal synthesis of CdHgSe/ZnCdS core/shell nanoplatelets (NPLs) starting from CdSe template NPLs employing a cation exchange strategy is developed. The heterostructures synthesized exhibit photoluminescence that can be tuned from ≈1300 to 1500 nm. These near-infrared-active NPLs are employed in light-emitting diodes, demonstrating low turn-on voltage and high external quantum efficiency.

Objectives: We performed a retrospective case control study to evaluate the histological characteristics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive pediatric patients undergoing laparoscopic exploration for acute abdomen symptoms. To our knowledge this is the first study that analyzes histopathological characteristics of abdominal tissues in SARS-CoV-2 children. Study design: We enrolled 8 multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) patients and 4 SARS-CoV-2 positive patients who underwent intestinal resection versus 36 control appendectomies from 2 pediatric tertiary referral centers between March 2020 and July 2021. Surgical resection samples were evaluated on several histological sections focusing on general inflammatory pattern and degree of inflammation. Peculiar histological features (endotheliitis and vascular thrombosis) were semi-quantitatively scored respectively in capillary, veins, and arteries. Results: All SARS-CoV-2 related surgical samples showed thrombotic patterns. Those patterns were significantly less frequent in SARS-CoV-2 negative appendectomies (P = 0.004). The semi-quantitative score of thrombosis was significantly higher (P = 0.002) in patients with SARS-CoV-2 related procedures. Conclusions: Our results showed that SARS-CoV-2 can cause thrombotic damage in abdominal tissues both in the acute phase of the infection (SARS-CoV-2 related appendectomies) and secondary to cytokine storm (MIS-C).

Simultaneously achieving both broad absorption and sharp emission in the near-infrared (NIR) is challenging. Coupling of an efficient absorber such as lead halide perovskites to lanthanide emissive species is a promising way to meet the demands for visible-to-NIR spectral conversion. However, lead-based perovskite sensitizers suffer from relatively narrow absorption in the visible range, poor stability, and toxicity. Herein, we introduce a downshifting configuration based on lead-free cesium manganese bromide nanocrystals acting as broad visible absorbers coupled to sharp emission in the NIR-I and NIR-II spectral regions. To achieve this, we synthesized CsMnBr3 and Cs3MnBr5 nanocrystals and attempted to dope them with a series of lanthanides, achieving success only with CsMnBr3. The correlation of the lanthanide emission to the CsMnBr3 visible absorption was confirmed with steady-state excitation spectra and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, whereas the mechanism of downconversion from the CsMnBr3 matrix to the lanthanides was understood by density functional theory calculations. This study shows that lead-free metal halides with an appropriate phase are effective sensitizers for lanthanides and offer a route to efficient downshifting applications.

Disk battery ingestions in children are increasing worldwide. This condition may cause severe complications, especially if the battery is lodged in the oesophagus. The most dangerous complication with the highest mortality rate is aorto-oesophageal fistula. The tissue damage may appear after 2 hours from the ingestion. The paper reports the case of a 2-year-old girl who was admitted to the Emergency Department 15 days after the ingestion of a disk battery and who presented with an aorto-oesophageal fistula complication.

Luminescent Quantum dots (QDs) have gathered significant attention over the past decade. Their distinct chemical and optical properties, including size-adjustable light emission, remarkable photostability, and a range of fluorescence colors, have motivated extensive investigations. In recent years, near-infrared (NIR) quantum dots have emerged as a promising avenue for a new generation of optoelectronic devices including infrared detectors and light sources. This study presents the fabrication of NIR-LEDs operating at the o-band optical telecommunication wavelength (1300 nm) using novel CdHgSe/ZnCdS core/shell nanoplatelets with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 70%. The nanoplatelets achieve a remarkable external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7% in the final device. Notably, the resulting EQE of the fabricated NIR-LED sets a new benchmark for mercury-based QD LEDs.

Copper chalcogenide-based nanocrystals (NCs) are a suitable replacement for toxic Cd/Pb chalcogenide-based NCs in a wide range of applications including photovoltaics, optoelectronics, and biological imaging. However, despite rigorous research, direct synthesis approaches of this class of compounds suffer from inhomogeneous size, shape, and composition of the NC ensembles, which is reflected in their broad photoluminescence (PL) bandwidths. A partial cation exchange (CE) strategy, wherein host cations in the initial binary copper chalcogenide are replaced by incoming cations to form ternary/quaternary multicomponent NCs, has been proven to be instrumental in achieving better size, shape, and composition control to this class of nanomaterials. Additionally, adopting synthetic strategies which help to eliminate inhomogeneities in the NC ensembles can lead to narrower PL bandwidths, as was shown by single-particle studies on I−III−VI2-based semiconductor NCs. In this work, we formulate a two-step colloidal synthesis of Cu−Zn−In−Se (CZISe) NCs via a partial CE pathway. The first step is the synthesis of Cu2−xSe NCs, which serve as a template for the subsequent CE reaction. The second step is the incorporation of the In3+ and Zn2+ guest cations into the synthesized Cu2−xSe NCs via simultaneous injection of both metal precursors, which results in gradient-alloyed CZISe NCs with a Zn-rich surface. The as-synthesized NCs exhibit near-infrared (NIR) PL without an additional shell growth, which is typically required in most of the developed protocols. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of these Cu chalcogenide-based NCs reaches 20%. These NCs also exhibit intriguingly narrow PL bands, which challenges the notion of broad PL bands being an inherent property of this class of NCs. Background: In Fanconi anemia bone marrow failure is the major cause of morbidity and mortality and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation represents the only curative treatment. Liver disease, in terms of elevated liver function tests, as well as benign and malignant liver tumors, occurs especially in case of androgen treatment. We report a unique case of a child with Fanconi anemia with FANCD2 mutation who developed neonatal cryptogenic liver cirrhosis and bone marrow failure. The child successfully underwent sequential liver transplantation and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the first 2 years of life. Nineteen months after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and 30 months after liver transplantation, the patient is clinically well with normal hematopoietic function and excellent liver function. ConclusionThis is the first FA patient who successfully received sequential LT and HSCT highlighting that successful sequential transplantation is feasible in Fanconi anemia patients.

The anisotropy in semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) is reflected in the anisotropy of their crystal structure and organic ligand shell, which can be used for creating new semiconductor heterostructures. This work demonstrates the synthesis of core/shell NPLs containing zero-dimensional (0D) CdxHg1−xSe domains embedded in CdSe NPLs via cation exchange. The strategy is based on the different accessibility of definite regions of the NPLs for incoming cations upon time-limited reaction conditions. The obtained heterostructures were successfully overcoated with a CdyZn1−yS shell preserving their two-dimensional (2D) morphology. The NPLs exhibit bright photoluminescence in the range of 700-1100 nm with quantum yields up to 55%, thus making them a prospective material for light-emitting applications in the near-infrared spectral range.

On occasion of the COVID-19 pandemic, in Italy, during the outbreak period, 140 professionals, including paediatricians (the majority), general health practitioners, infectious diseases specialists, epidemiologists, neuropsychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists, pharmaceutical representatives, magistrates, predominantly Italian but also from other countries in Europe and beyond, created a chatline to share their own experiences.The results of such investigation have been reported in this report.

In humans, intermittent and continuous theta-burst stimulation (iTBS and cTBS) elicit long-term changes in motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) reflecting long-term potentiation (LTP)- and depression (LTD)-like plasticity in the primary motor cortex (M1). In this study, we used TBS to investigate M1 plasticity in patients with MSA. We also assessed whether responses to TBS reflect M1 excitability as tested by short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI), intracortical facilitation (ICF), short-interval intracortical facilitation (SICF), and the input/output curves. We studied 20 patients with MSA and 20 healthy subjects (HS). Patients were clinically evaluated with the Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale. The left M1 was conditioned with TBS. Twenty MEPs were recorded from the right first dorsal interosseous muscle before TBS and 5, 15, and 30 minutes thereafter. In a subgroup of 10 patients, we also tested MEPs elicited by SICI, ICF, SICF, and input/output curves, before TBS. Between-group analysis of variance showed that at all time points after iTBS MEPs increased, whereas after cTBS they decreased only in HS. In both subgroups tested, patients with predominant parkinsonian and cerebellar features, iTBS and cTBS left MEPs unchanged. MSA patients had reduced SICI, but normal ICF, SICF, and input/output curves. No correlation was found between patients' clinical features and responses to TBS and M1 excitability variables. These findings suggest impaired M1 plasticity in MSA.

The Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) has been available in English since 2008. As part of this process, the MDS-UPDRS organizing team developed guidelines for development of official non-English translations. We present here the formal process for completing officially approved non-English versions of the MDS-UPDRS and specifically focus on the first of these versions in Italian. The MDS-UPDRS was translated into Italian and tested in 377 native-Italian speaking PD patients. Confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses determined whether the factor structure for the English-language MDS-UPDRS could be confirmed in data collected using the Italian translation. To be designated an 'Official MDS translation,' the Comparative Fit Index (CFI) had to be ≥0.90 relative to the English-language version. For all four parts of the Italian MDS-UPDRS, the CFI, in comparison with the English-language data, was ≥0.94. Exploratory factor analyses revealed some differences between the two datasets, however these differences were considered to be within an acceptable range. The Italian version of the MDS-UPDRS reaches the criterion to be designated as an Official Translation and is now available for use. This protocol will serve as outline for further validation of this in multiple languages. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Responsive monolayers are key building blocks for future applications in organic and molecular electronics in particular because they hold potential for tuning the physico-chemical properties of interfaces, including their energetics. Here we study a photochromic SAM based on a conjugated azobenzene derivative and its influence on the gold work function (Phi(Au)) when chemisorbed on its surface. In particular we show that the Phi(Au) can be modulated with external stimuli by controlling the azobenzene trans/cis isomerization process. This phenomenon is characterized experimentally by four different techniques, kelvin probe, kelvin probe force microscopy, electroabsorption spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The use of different techniques implies exposing the SAM to different measurement conditions and different preparation methods, which, remarkably, do not alter the observed work function change (Phi(trans)-Phi(cis)). We report on the optical properties of polystyrene opals infiltrated with solutions of ad hoc synthesized heteroaromatic quadrupolar dyes endowed with strong nonlinear optical properties (two-photon absorption). Transmittance spectroscopy of opals infiltrated with dye water solutions shows both a bathochromic shift and a reduced width of the photonic crystal stop band. Moreover, variable angle transmittance spectra highlight the high energy dispersion of the stop band upon increasing the incidence angle. Photoluminescence spectra recorded at different emission angles with respect to the normal of the sample for such infiltrated opals show that the emission spectrum is strongly modified at the stop band according to the opal dispersion properties. A careful comparison of the intensity and spectral properties of photoluminescence in opals possessing a properly tuned photonic stop band is reported and discussed. Two different effects are observed: when concentrated solutions are used, emitted light filtering due to the photonic stop band is observed. On the other hand, by properly reducing solution self-absorption, directional enhancement of emission in the high energy side of the stop band is observed. Physical mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are discussed. © 2010 American Chemical Society.

Poly(9,9'-dioctyl fluorene) (F8) and poly(4,4'-diphenylene diphenylvinylene) (PDPV) are conjugated polymers with optical transitions that are nonresonant thanks to the particular structural features of PDPV that yield a very large Stokes' shift (similar to 1.14 eV) between absorption and emission spectra. We present steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) experiments showing that F8:PDPV blends are "optically disconnected" systems for which the emission spectra and PL quantum yields are the linear combination of the contributions of the individual constituents with weights given by the respective absorption coefficients and concentration in the films. Single-layer light-emitting diodes incorporating F8:PDPV blends show white electroluminescence resulting from the simultaneous exploitation of the spectral features of both blend constituents (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage, CIE, coordinates: x=0.27 and y=0.36, in the case of 8:2 F8:PDPV molar ratio).
